Noel, Noel,
It’s that magical time of year. There’s nothing like it on the planet, yet time screams on, and the project list doesn’t falter. Yesterday I could have planned to hit the Long Beach Boat Parade, through the crowded Naples Island traffic. In fact I Installed a 42 mm Mikuni carb on the CrazyHorse engine and it worked. I wanted to ride into Long Beach to dodge traffic. Hell, I was missing the David Mann Chopperfest in Ventura, and the Mooneyes show is this weekend.
So, what the hell did I do all day in the Bikernet headquarters? I built a hare-brained display for the IMS show next weekend. I could have bought a table, a couple of chairs and sat in my booth comfortably, but no. The stand will hold the 1926 Peashooter and a rotating Bikernet sign, which I need to build today.
Sam, wrote me the other day and asked about the IMS show, since they are not exactly the outlaw shows we’ve attended in the past. “What the hell do you think you’re doing,” Sam said. The IMS shows are the general audience, new model, motorcycle sports shows. As it turned out, this year two brothers got involved with the Progressive Shows (once Cycle World Shows) to pump up their custom motorcycle displays and create an AMD World Championship circuit of shows in the states. So, I stepped up to help. These shows draw three times the attendance of chopper shows, and between Bob Kay and Jeff Najar, they are kicking the custom competition in the ass with serious prize money and a chance to compete in the AMD show in Sturgis. So there you have it. My holiday weekend at the Bikernet Headquarters. Let’s party:
BIKERNET AIRPORT OFFICIAL WEEKLY MEMO– 3. A senior Vermont Congressman (Bernie Sanders) called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando . He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that’s not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state.
He replied, ‘Don’t lie to me!, I looked on the map, and Florida is a very THIN state!!” (OMG)
4. I got a call from a lawmaker’s wife (Landra Reid) who asked, ”Is it possible to see England from Canada ?”
I said, ”No.”
She said, ”But they look so close on the map” (OMG, again!)

H-D SUPPORT BIKES OVER BAGHDAD FOR THE THIRD YEAR– Harley-Davidson is teaming up with Bikes Over Baghdad through Dec. 9 to present seven action sports performances at military bases throughout Iraq and Kuwait.
“Harley-Davidson shares a deep sense of freedom and patriotism with the U.S. Armed Forces, and we are grateful for their many sacrifices, dedication and hard work,” says Mike McCann, director of core customer marketing at Harley-Davidson. “We have a longstanding relationship with the U.S. Military, and teaming up with Bikes Over Baghdad is a great way to show our appreciation. We are honored and excited to be part of this tour.”
The tour is in its third year. Bikes Over Baghdad (BOB) is a BMX exhibition by a handful of the world’s best action sports athletes, announcers and ramp builders. The tour will perform for an estimated 20,000 U.S. troops, most of whom have little or no access to entertainment of any kind.
“Our mission in Iraq is simple. We want to show the troops that we care, that America hasn’t forgotten about them,” said Brian Kachinsky, an X Games bronze medalist who participated in the first two BOB tours.
“The troops love the adrenaline and excitement of the Bikes Over Baghdad shows,” says McCann. “It’s an incredible feeling for us to get to participate in something that celebrates and shares the spirit of youthful adventure for which Harley-Davidson has long been known.”
McCann will give out free Harley-Davidson MotorClothes and other merchandise and gifts at each performance. One service member will also win a brand new 2011 Harley-Davidson XR1200X motorcycle.

Malahide is extremely posh. We will be touring in some of the more exotic sites of Ireland, places not seen by most tourists. There will be plenty of time for high dollar shopping. We will also be experiencing some of the more celebrated craftspeople and their work. We will be attending 2 professional plays, one specifically Irish. Anything you can do to help us promote this tour would be much appreciated.

CODE OF THE WEST HOLLYWOOD STYLE–In a constant search for the Code of the West doctrine, we came across a movie from the ’50s called Tall Tale, in which Pecos Bill explained the code of the west as, “Respect the land; defend the defenseless, and never spit in front of a woman.”
There you have it. The investigation continues.
Latest update: Leroy Thompson Choppers built it, and its name is “Salt Flats.” I have an e-mail in to them.

THE ANNUAL ROLLIN SIXES/BIKERNET/VELMA T-SHIRT DRIVE FOR THE TROOPS– Hey everyone, i thought you guys might want to see this. It really made our day especially with my dad in the hospital fighting lung cancer as we speak. This is what it is all about, meeting people like Clinton.
–Jerry
This is Clinton R. York. I hope this is reaching the person that emailed me at the beginning of this year. I’d first of all like to say that I was saddened by hearing about you losing Velma. I hope it wasn’t painful or drawn out. I
didn’t know what to say about it when I heard so I didn’t say anything. I hope that was the right thing to do. From what I’ve read and seen on the Rollin Sixes web site, she seems like someone I and my family would have really liked to know.
I saw on the web site they’re sending out stuff to the troops already, and I thought I may be too late. Last year my family and I made a bunch of hats for the troops. This year we have a bunch more if you want them. I figured I could forgo my subscription to Bikernet until next year to pay for shipping. I don’t remember who helped last year with your shipping address, you or Jeremy. If you could help me find the address to ship to, that would be great. Oh, we have a little over 100 hats this time. If it’s too late to send them down I can probably find a local place.
Thanks, for your help.
— Clinton R. York, HOLD FAST!
We will be glad to give Clinton a complimentary sub for 2011, because he supported the Velma Drive.–Bandit

THE GOOD DOCTOR’S ADVICE FROM THE BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER–
Tired of White Rice?
Traditionally a Middle Eastern pilaf is made with white rice, but here we use a healthful grain, toasting it first to bring out its flavor, and mixing in aromatic vegetables to create a delicious, more nutritious dish.
Ingredients
2 cups millet, quinoa, amaranth or a combination
1/8 teaspoon curry powder (optional)
4 cups chicken stock or vegetable stock (more, as needed)
1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes (dried in a package, not in oil)
1/2 cup boiling purified water
1/2 cup shredded zucchini
1/2 cup shredded yellow summer squash
1/4 cup minced red bell pepper
1/4 cup chopped scallions or green onions
Salt to taste
Instructions
Toast the millet (or other grains) in a large saucepan set over low heat, stirring it constantly until it turns a light brown color, less than 1 minute. Stir in the curry powder until it is blended in. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Add the chicken or vegetable stock and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer. Check after 20 minutes. If the stock has boiled away, add a little more. Cook until the millet has absorbed all the liquid, about 25 minutes in all.
Meanwhile, soak the dried tomatoes in the boiling water for 15 minutes. Drain them in a colander set over a bowl to reserve the liquid, then chop them. Mix the tomatoes, reserved liquid, zucchini, yellow squash, red pepper, and scallions or green onions together in a small skillet set over low heat and cook until most of the liquid is absorbed. Pour into the cooked grain and toss until everything is completely mixed together. Taste and add salt if you think it is needed. Fluff with a fork and serve.
Tips from Rosie’s Kitchen
You can also make this recipe with brown rice, but the cooking time would increase to 45 minutes.

HISTORIC DISCOVERY FROM PABLO– Found this in a old Hot Bike from 1990. There is also a article/story on Bob George in this issue. It’s about his dual engine Shovel and some on his streamliner.
This was in the same issue. It’s a article on Russell Hendron and his Pro Dragster “Crazy Horse”. I scanned the stuff on the Trock cases.
I went with Ron to the “Big Chicago” swap meet many times in the old days. This one particular year, these cases were all he brought with us to the show.
Big Rich from A.M.R.A. let us set up in his booth area. It was his first showing of the cases.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY BREAK WORD OF THE DAY–gallivant GAL-uh-vant, verb:
1. To wander about, seeking pleasure or diversion; gad.
2. To go about with members of the opposite sex.
But this year, photographer Karl Lagerfeld included a few men in his all-model cast, meaning that the girls get to gallivant across the pages with gorgeous male playthings.
— Emily Cronin, “Karl Lagerfeld brings men to the Pirelli calendar,” Elle, UK, November, 2010.
Color me glad, with a caveat: my foot’s still swollen and won’t fit into any of my cute shoes, which means I can gallivant all over town, all I want – in bedroom slippers.
— Lynne Horner, “Second Thoughts, the Maui News, November, 2010.
Gallivant has an uncertain origin, but likely stems from a playful take on gallant, “brave, spirited, noble-minded, or chivalrous.”
RIVER RAT ON THE ROAD RECIPE–Stopped by a friend and his wife’s place and we dug up mushrooms for the breakfast omelette, picked avocados from the trees out back, and watched the fog roll off Mt. Madonna. Rolled out after noon and cruised the PCH through Big Sur with a bottle of home made wine in the saddlebag. Will be looking for someone to share it with. Think I’ll find someone at on the beach the Chopperfest that has a wine opener in his pocket…?
Heard the Fryed Bros will be in the studio working on their new album (cd) this weeked so I plan to head up to SF to hang out around the studio, maybe help with cooking for the crew before I meander back home. will send you some photos, if I can make me pull over. I am soooo loving this great weather.

KANSAS TRAFFIC STOP–This old story out of Kansas. Seems a guy makes a rolling stop… a stop sign, and gets pulled over by a local policeman. Guy hands the cop his driver’s license, insurance verification, plus his concealed carry permit.
“Okay, Mr. Smith,” the cop says, “I see your CCW permit. Are you carrying today?”
“Yes, I am.”
“Well then, better tell me what you got.”
Smith says, “Well, I got a .357 revolver in my inside coat pocket. There’s a 9mm semi-auto in the glove box. And, I’ve got a .22 magnum derringer in my right boot.”
“Okay,” the cop says. “Anything else?”
“Yeah, back in the trunk, there’s an AR15 and a shotgun. That’s about it.”
“Mr. Smith, are you on your way to or from a gun range…?”
“Nope.”
“Well then, what are you afraid of…?”
“Not a damned thing…”

MRF REPORTS: NHTSA MEETING– The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) recently participated in a regularly-scheduled meeting with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The government safety group continues to deny that the recent drop in motorcycle fatalities could have anything to do with education and awareness, instead maintaining that that the decrease was a result of people riding less. However, the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) reported that during the same time period, 2008-2009, vehicle miles traveled for motorcycles were up 6.8% or 27.6 billion miles in the U.S. The MIC also reported that tire sales, a unique measure of motorcycle use, were also up 9.6% in 2008-2009.
NHTSA also continued to defend their discriminatory practice of funding motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints, including their recent $40,000 award to Georgia’s Department of Public Safety. The idea is based on no science or research, but simply the notion that pulling every motorcycle off the road at the discretion of law enforcement will “save lives.”
NEW SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE
It is safe to presume that Representative John Boehner (R-OH) will become the next Speaker of the House once the vote is taken by the 111th Congress when they are sworn in this January. With Republicans taking control of the House, it is likely that Boehner will garner the majority of the votes. The MRF recently met with Mr. Boehner’s staff to congratulate him. Representative Boehner has been a long-time friend of the MRF and ABATE of Ohio, and we look forward to continuing working with him in his new role.

HOLIDAY STRESS RELIEF PART 2 Flower Remedies, GOOD GOD–
Each weekend in December we present tips that can help you manage unhealthy stress. Consider them this holiday season, and pass them along to family and friends!
Stress can negatively impact your physical health, mood and social interactions. One way to help address the symptoms of stress is with passion flower (Passiflora incarnata). The dried above-ground parts of the plant can be found in tincture and extract form – look for standardized whole-plant extracts or capsules containing no less than 0.8 percent flavonoids or isovitexin. You can use passion flower for stress reduction, calming without sedation and relief from insomnia (when combined with other sedative herbs).
One dropperful of the tincture in a little warm water, or two capsules of extract, up to four times a day as needed is the adult dosage; children should take half that amount. Use caution if you’re also taking MAO-inhibiting antidepressant drugs, and do not take passion flower when pregnant – active compounds may be uterine stimulants.
Don’t miss next Saturday’s Tip, which focuses on stress management via connecting with yourself.

KAWASAKI TEAMS WITH COSTCO–Just before Thanksgiving I was in my local Costco store, gathering up supplies for our holiday supper. As I neared the checkout line, I saw a flash of a familiar iridescent green, highlighted with black. “Huh? Could it be?” Sure enough there in front of a teaming crowd of Costco shoppers was a brand new Kawasaki motocross bike locked in a display, pulling a wheelie. A number of people were gathered around it and dipping into the supply of promotional fliers.
If you’ve been reading Dealernews for a few years, you’ll know that I’ve been an advocate for some OEM, any OEM, jumping into a sales program proposed by massive warehouse chain and giving it a try. The folks who manage the Costco Auto Program, Affinity Development, have been working on getting the motorcycle industry involved since 2006 and have presented their program to all the Japanese OEMs as well as a number of the European brands, but until recently, no takers. That is, until now.
Kawasaki Motors Corp., is the first OEM to sign on with Costco Wholesale for a pilot program in Southern California’s Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. The trial effort involves a select number of dealerships that are served by 15 Costco warehouse stores, each of which have a display consisting of a motorcycle on a stand and promotional fliers. The program kicked off with KX motocross bikes, but will be expanded to include more models as it progresses.
Here’s how the program works. An interested Costco member contacts the store either by phone or online, registers with Costco and is referred to the nearest participating Kawasaki dealer to his home, or place of business. The member goes to the dealership, presents his membership card, is provided with a copy of the member-only price sheet, and selects his motorcycle. Costco serves only as a referral point. All transactions take place at the participating Kawasaki dealership.
The prices have already been negotiated between Costco and the dealer, so it’s a fair price and there’s no customer haggling. The member then simply needs to complete a redemption form and return it to Costco along with his purchase agreement. He then completes a customer satisfaction survey and receives a $250 Costco Cash card. As an added incentive, anyone with a Costco membership card can receive a 20 percent discount on parts, accessories and apparel at a participating dealer simply by showing their membership card. Items already on sale are excluded from this offer.
According to an Affinity Development representative, one of the concerns expressed by OEMs was the devaluation of carry-over product. Kawasaki resolved this problem by limiting the promotion to 2011 product and possibly not having much carryover product in the field.
Dave Lautner, Kawasaki’s manager of dealer performance and communications, was very clear that the program is a trial and would have to demonstrate its success before Kawasaki would be willing to roll it out to other dealers throughout the nation. A recap is scheduled for sometime in January and at that time a determination will be made to roll it out nationwide or discontinue the program. Lautner is confident that the program will be a success, and would be happy with only a marginal sales increase, but is taking a “wait and see” attitude about it.
Jeff Skeen, CEO of Affinity Development, anticipates that the pilot program will be a success and will be rolled out to the entire Costco network over the course of this winter and spring. At this point, according to Skeen, they’re planning displays of cruiser motorcycles for the spring, and Jet-Ski’s in the summer.
The program went into effect shortly before Thanksgiving, and a call to a couple of participating dealers indicated that they were delighted with the promotion. David Nadler, general manager at Del Amo Motorsports in Redondo Beach, Calif., indicated he’d sold two motorcycles since the program began. Nadler agreed that the KX models weren’t exactly the right bike for this audience, but felt when motorcycles with a broader appeal were available things should take off.
When I spoke with Skeen at the beginning of December, the program had been in place for only a few weeks and the website wasn’t yet operational. Typically they receive over 10 times the number of inquiries via the internet than they do via phone, but even at that they still had received 124 calls.
BUYING POWER
Most of you are familiar with Costco but may not be aware of its amazing membership demographics. Costco’s retailing philosophy is to provide its membership with high-quality products and services at a good value and a fair price and then to back it up with superior service. As an example, returns don’t require a receipt. There are no questions nor is there the typical 30-day time frame for returns with the exception of computers.
As unlikely as it may seem, the chain is the largest seller of fine wines in the world, and the largest seller of large flat-screen televisions and at least one person has dropped $102,000 sometime in the past on a diamond ring. Its membership is decidedly upscale — 22.1 million households have a Costco membership (representing 41 million members), that’s almost 20 percent of all the households in the United States. The median annual income for these members is $107,800, versus $50,221 according to the most recent government statistics. Costco currently has 415 warehouses in 40 states and Puerto Rico.
So if it works for boats and cars, why not motorcycles?
To me this program seems to be a win-win opportunity. In all probability a dealership is going to increase its motorcycle sales by some margin, even one-percent of 22.1 million households is a lot of people. Perhaps even more importantly a dealer is going to expose his products to hundreds of thousands of people who’ve never been in a motorcycle store, but might if they’re motivated by seeing a bike they might like in a familiar, comforting setting.
We’ll be bringing you updates on the success of the program in the future.

LAW-ABIDING, HONOR ROLL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT FACES EXPULSION–
Demari DeRue is a 16-year-old junior at Columbia Falls High School in Columbia Falls, Montana. She is an honor roll student, a cheerleader and a hunter. On Monday, December 13th, she faces expulsion from school because, after a recent weekend family hunting trip, she inadvertently left her unloaded and secured hunting rifle locked in her trunk, and then drove to school Monday morning and parked on school property.
The expulsion could be for as long as a year, but any expulsion could seriously hurt Demari’s college plans.
Details of Demari’s situation can be read here: http://www.dailyinterlake.com/news/local_montana/article_30256480-0282-11e0-ac8f-001cc4c03286.html
School officials claim they have no choice but to expel Demari. But the facts of this case show the unreasonable nature of the “zero-tolerance” mindset. Further, both federal and state law give discretion to school officials to modify the expulsion provisions in the statutes.
The no firearms rules were created to punish students who present a danger or who intend to commit crimes; not to punish an upstanding honor student who simply had a memory lapse. Further, it was Demari who voluntarily informed school officials when she remembered she had left the rifle locked in the trunk of her car. It is appalling that Demari is facing expulsion because of her honesty.
The hearing for Demari will be Monday, December 13, at 6:00 p.m. (plan to arrive by 5:00 p.m.), in the Administration Building at Glacier Gateway Elementary School, located at 501 sixth avenue west, in Columbia Falls. If at all possible, please attend this hearing and support Demari. Politely tell school district officials that blind adherence to unreasonable anti-gun policies does not make our kids safer, and in this particular case, would be a grave injustice.
Let them know that the only reasonable outcome of this hearing is to completely purge Demari’s high school record of this incident, so she won’t be in a position of trying to explain a “gun crime” to firearm-averse review committees considering college and scholarship applications.
Also, please contact high school officials, the superintendent and the school board and politely let them know that you support Demari, that you oppose any action to expel her and that a complete expungement of her record is in order. Contact information can be found below.

BIKERNET INSURANCE OPEN ON SUNDAYS– “Tis the season to spend on travel.” – Are your travel plans ready and insured?
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, many of us start thinking about booking holiday travel. During the holidays, statistics show that vacationers spend 20% more on getaways than on vacations during other times of the year. Polls also show that the majority of those who book travel over the holidays plan vacations to escape cold weather for destinations like the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii. No kidding!
Take Care of Business Before You Go.
Here’s a checklist to follow before you embark on that great vacation.
1. Photocopy Passports and Travel Documents(Visas, Itinerary) – take copies with you and leave copies back home with friends or other family members. It will be much easier for a U.S. Embassy to issue a new passport without delay should yours be stolen.
2. Buy Travel Insurance – to cover flight cancellations, delays, lost baggage, medical emergencies, and natural disasters.
3. Buy Medical Insurance – to cover injury or sickness while you and your family are out of the country
4. Carry Documentation for Children – you’ll need to prove the kids are yours if crossing international borders. Original, certified and notarized birth certificates in additional to the children’s passports are a must in this day and age.
5. Create a Last Will and Testament – lets you decide who gets your assets, money and wealth
6. Create a Living Will – outlines your wishes in the event of incapacity
7. Create a Power of Attorney for Health Care – designates a person to make health care decisions on your behalf
8. Create a Durable Power of Attorney – designates a person to act on your behalf in financial dealings

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, GODDAMNIT–Again, take time to relax, have a drink, an Egg Nog, wonderful food and spend time with friends and loved-ones. Don’t do it like me, and scramble to finish my Bikernet Booth display and tune a motorcycle.
Next week, I’m facing two magazine deadlines. I need to write a feature on this Cheeze/Spitfire Buell custom for Cycle Source and write the next build article for the HORSE/Bikernet sweeps bike project with Brass Balls Bobbers, Custom Chrome and Paughco. Don’t miss the series on Bikernet, you could win this bike.
Greg Friend from Saddlemen is headed to the Headquarters on Tuesday for lunch, and I need to write 1%er chapters. Oh, and my son’s hotrod Dyna needs a wheelie clutch. I know there’s something else, but next week, I’m hoping to kick back, roll out to see a fantastic hidden cache of antique motorcycles, and roll over to Motorsport Wheels and pick up the flat black 2-D mags for our Mudflap girl bike project for 2011. I’m building it for my son, but I might want to build another one for myself.
Merry merry,
–Bandit
