Motorcycle club helping teens get to prom

Pedestrians on 10th Street in Gering might want to shield their eyes Saturday morning. Some of the most burly and grizzly-faced men will be riding motorcycles through town wearing prom dresses.

The UMF motorcycle club has organized a Prom Fund Run starting at 10 a.m. at the Union Bar in Gering. The money raised from the event will be given to PROMise, a charity group that donates prom dresses to teens.

Prom is expensive. A survey conducted by VISA states that the average American family spent $1,139 on clothing, food and transportation for the annual high school ritual in 2013. In the past year alone, spending increased 5 percent, a rate well above inflation.
