New Blood DVD Review

Folks are constantly trying to produce build-related DVDs. After four seasons of Discovery Biker Build-offs, constant OCC project bikes and Build or Busts, the scenario has lost its luster like salt-coated chrome left on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Motorcycles are made up of just a handful of consistent elements, and if everyone bolts the same S&S engine in a rigid frame with billet wheels and a slight variety of sheet metal, then it becomes all about film product values, action, and personalities. On the other hand, if you love motorcycles and building new shit, then you’re always reaching for inspiration and a valued learning experience.

Roland and Kenny
I’ll find the name of this production company. I believe the company name was “Just Shorts.” They did a helluva job with graphics, special effects, editing, and music. Although Roland doesn’t represent the old school, no school, or outlaw, he does represent “New Blood,” in our industry. So if you want to see a bike built with a completely outrageous driveline, Kenny Roberts’ MotoGP KRV5 engine, which is totally unfamiliar to the custom market, and a one-off chassis, built by hand from the ground up, this is a film to watch. Roland and his team designed and built all the sheet metal, the exhaust, grappled with the wiring, machined the PM wheels and used only the finest components money can buy. Sure, there’s a high-dollar back-drop to this film with the entire Performance Machine candy store at his back, his dad’s helicopter, and flights to Europe to hang out with the racing elite; but beyond that, Roland works hard and doesn’t quit thinking about a project until it’s complete.

Here are a couple of lines off the back of the New Blood DVD box: Never before had a motorcycle designer had the chance to create a complete custom with such a highly engineered engine. It was the only Moto GP engine to ever leave the coveted Kenny Roberts paddock.

New Blood details the storied background of both Kenny Roberts and Roland Sands, including interviews from MotoGP champions Nicky Hayden, Arlen Ness, Perry Sands, and Charlie Boorman. New Blood provides a glimpse into the creative mind of Roland Sands and incorporates the history of MotoGP racing and the drive to deliver this unique motorcycle one year from the time they shook on the deal at Laguna Seca. Wait, there is an outlaw in the mix. Tom Foster hangs around during the build and adds his two cents. Made it all worthwhile. Click here to see the Bikernet Roland Sands Tracker Feature.
