Hey,
It’s that time of the year or of the next year. This day is extremely meaningful to me, almost more than any other day of the year. It represents the gift of another year.
Sure, party and relax tomorrow. Watch a few games, but then a new year begins, so be prepared. I joke to kids about something being the “Chance of a Lifetime.” Everyone laughs, but I’m serious as a heart attack.
This year holds another “Chance of a lifetime,” to make a difference in your life. You could go back to school, quit smoking, escape a bad relationship, quit drinking, hit the gym, build the bike of your dreams, write a book, start a business or…?

Let’s hit the news and at the end I will outline my goals for next year. I expect you to hold me to each one. Get ‘em done or die trying…

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–
7 New (2017) Papers Forecast Global Cooling, Another Little Ice Age Will Begin Soon.
During 2017, 120 papers linking historical and modern climate change to variations in solar activity and its modulators (clouds, cosmic rays) have been published in scientific journals.
It has been increasingly established that low solar activity (fewer sunspots) and increased cloud cover (as modulated by cosmic rays) are highly associated with a cooling climate.
In recent years, the Earth has unfortunately left a period of very high solar activity, the Modern Grand Maximum. Periods of high solar activity correspond to multi-decadal- to centennial-scale warming.
Solar scientists are now increasingly forecasting a period of very low activity that will commence in the next few years (by around 2020 to 2025). This will lead to climate cooling, even Little Ice Age conditions.
The contrast analysis between the periodic movement of the planetary system and the periodicity of solar activity shows that the two phenomena exhibit a period change rule of 179.5 years. Moreover, orderly orbits correspond to high periods of solar activity and disorderly orbits correspond to low periods of solar activity. …
Therefore, a certain relationship exists between the movement of the planetary system, solar activity, and global climate change.
The movement of the planetary system can thus be used to interpret the periodic trends of the movement of the Sun and global climate change. … A period change rule of a 179.5-year cycle is observed. This period change rule is consistent with the change that takes place once every 2 centuries (about 160 to 210 years) for solar activity and global climate change.
The Sun is headed into a grand minimum, that is, a period of unusually low solar activity. A relatively low number of or nonexistent sunspots are observed during the protracted solar minimum.
Since 1000 AD, there have been six protracted solar minimums, namely, the Oort minimum (1040–1080 AD), Medieval Minor minimum (1150 1200 AD), Wolf minimum (1270–1350 AD), Spörer minimum (1430–1520 AD), Maunder minimum (1620–1710 AD), and Dalton minimum (1787–1843 AD). [A]ll the orbits of the planetary system are in disorder during the six protracted solar minimums.
The planet juncture index and heliocentric longitude are also in disorder during the six protracted solar minimums. The numerical simulation results show a high number of sunspots and strong solar activity [warming] during the orderly orbit and a low number of sunspots, low solar activity, and the occurrence of a protracted solar minimum or little ice age during the disorderly orbit. … [T]he results indicate that the solar minimum and little ice ages correspond to the planetary system’s disorderly orbit.
Nurtaev and Nurtaev, 2017
More sunspots deliver more energy to the atmosphere, by way of increased brightness of the Sun and solar wind what tend to warm the Earth. Solar activity affects the Earth in many ways, some which we are still coming to understand.
In accordance with National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) forecasting the solar cycles 24 and 25 will be very weak: averaged sunspot numbers W-35 for the solar cycle 24 and for the solar cycle 25 less than W-35 , NGDC (2009). Total Solar Irradiance will equal -1365. (23 cycle -1366). This actually will lead to a decrease of the temperature on 0.5 – 0.7°C in both averaged solar cycles, in Geneva will decrease to 1.5 °C. Temperature of air will be lower in the Northern Hemisphere. Precipitation rate in Caucasus will be more in average on 100-150 mm in dependence from location.
The World Ocean level also will be lower, due to more snow and glacier accumulation on continents…

Firearms And The Relation To Male…Equipment
Anti-gunners love to try and equate male genitals and firearms for some reason. They often claim they’re phallic symbols even though anyone whose junk looks like a gun needs to see a physician immediately. However, that doesn’t stop them from making the claim.
Such as this charming individual I encountered on Twitter yesterday.
To which I replied that yes, I do feel inadequate. After all, my member won’t sling projectiles at 1,200 feet per second toward bad guys, thus it’s inadequate for certain functions.
However, it also got me to thinking about why so many anti-gun women try this tactic. Do they really think we gun owning men equate our sex organs with our guns?
As Massad Ayoob once noted, if a firearm were related to a man’s…manhood, no guy would buy a gun with a two-inch barrel. He’s right.
But that’s not really what it’s about.
The attempt here isn’t because anyone actually thinks male reproductive organs or guns really have anything in common. What they’re trying to do is use a picture of gun owners as almost all male and then try to undermine our masculinity. They’re trying to claim that real men don’t need guns, but don’t want to use the language since feminist find it so objectionable.
What they miss is that while firearms may not be phallic symbols, they are a part of masculinity. In fact, a key part of masculine behavior.
Last year, I published a book on masculinity. In part, it was to counter so much BS floating around as to what a man is and what a man isn’t. In the process, I outlined three roles all men should fill. The professor, or the one who teaches the young about what a man is and how to do various things, was one. The provider, which is self-explanatory, is another, though I do note that being a provider doesn’t preclude a spouse making as much or more than you. The final role of a man is to be the protector, the one who keeps his family safe from harm.
When it comes to protecting what you love, no tool is more efficient or effective than a firearm. Period.
Some may argue that the gun is the tool of a weak man, it’s not. It’s the tool of someone who understands that the bad people of the world don’t like to play by anyone’s rule book but their own, and if you’re unarmed, you may be woefully unprepared to stand up and protect those you care about.
Contrary to some people’s implication, having a gun isn’t unmanly. In fact, I’d argue that being able to own a gun and refusing to do so is the unmanly act. Anyone who does so has shirked their responsibility to protect their family, outsourcing it to others who may or may not be able to act effectively should the moment of truth arrive.
So yes, we’re overcompensating for something. We’re overcompensating for the fact that no body part of ours can require everyone else to play by Marquis of Queensbury rules in the world. Plain and simple.

CHANCE OF A LIFETIME– A great story from when America was still the Land of Opportunity
Last week during a long overdue vacation, a close friend of mine recommended reading the autobiography of Rich DeVos called Simply Rich.
DeVos is a billionaire entrepreneur who started countless ventures during his nine decades on this earth.
Back in the 1946, for example, DeVos started an airline… virtually overnight.
He just bought an airplane and started flying people around. No rules. No regulations.
…
They didn’t even have an airport. The local airfield north of Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they were based, hadn’t been completed yet.
As DeVos recounts in his book, “We put pontoon floats on our plane and took off and landed on the Grand River, which ran along the airfield.”
His first office at the airfield was an old chicken coop that he found, washed in the river, and re-painted.
The following year he and his partner opened up one of Michigan’s first “Drive Through” restaurants at the airfield, catering to passengers, workers, flight students, and spectators who came by in the evenings just to marvel at the planes.
Again, no rules. No regulations.
They just saw an opportunity and went for it.
DeVos started another business selling ice cream; another offering fishing excursions on Lake Superior; and another delivering trucks cross-country.
The truck delivery business was one of the more interesting ones; it started when he was just a kid– someone asked him to drive two pickups from Grand Rapids to Bozeman, Montana.
There were no hotels or motels… or even interstates back then.
So DeVos and his friend had to zig-zag their way across corn fields to get there, sleeping on haystacks each night along the way.
The book is a hell of an adventure– a reminder of how free and unencumbered things used to be.
Back in America’s heyday, people succeeded based on their hard work, ingenuity, and willingness to take action.
They didn’t have to spend three years filling out paperwork so that some government bureaucracy could justify its existence.
It was an environment that created unparalleled opportunity and prosperity which, candidly, have long since faded.
Today there are rules for everything; in fact, just this morning, the US federal government published an astonishing 709 pages of new regulations.
And that’s just for today. They publish new regulations every single business day. So tomorrow there will be even more.
These rules make it more difficult to produce, to start a business, to sell a product or service to a willing consumer.
And these rules carry costs, whether it’s in paying a fee, filling out paperwork, etc.
So just imagine the effect that literally decades worth of rules and regulations has had on US productivity (which is now noticeably contracting, even according to government data.)
It’s also worth noting that roughly 30% of occupations in the Land of the Free now require some sort of government license.
In its study “License to Work”, the Institute for Justice reports that 45 out of 50 of the largest cities in the United States have put up substantial obstacles to prevent budding entrepreneurs from selling food from street carts.
A manicurist in Alabama requires 163 days of training, while a shampoo specialist at a Tennessee hair salon must undergo 70 days of training, take two exams, and pay $140 in fees to obtain a license.
Hawaii requires fire alarm installers to undergo a whopping four years of training, pass two exams, and pay $380 in fees to obtain a license.
And a tree trimmer in California must also undergo four years of training, pass two exams, and pay $851 in fees to obtain a license.
It’s absurd.
Nothing that Rich DeVos his partner accomplished in their teens and 20s is even legal anymore.
It makes me think about all the people today who will never have the chance to realize their full potential thanks to the mountain of regulations blocking their way.
This is an important point to understand.
Looking at the data– the incredible overregulation, $20 trillion in debt, insolvent pension funds, etc., it’s painfully obvious that the US is past its prime and holding back millions of people from achieving greater prosperity.
Rich DeVos started so many businesses back in the 1940s because the government stayed out of the way and enabled hard-working risk takers to succeed.
Today the government spends $2 billion to build a website and churns out hundreds of pages of regulations each day.
And this trend gets worse each year.
Understanding this simple reality doesn’t mean that you’re pessimistic, unpatriotic, or expecting the end of the world.
It just makes you rational.
Things change. That’s the bottom line.
The US is still a fantastic place. But it’s no longer the same Land of Opportunity it was when Rich DeVos was getting started.
As I’ve summarized before, the US is a great place to consume… but an increasingly difficult place to PRODUCE.
That imbalance has serious long-term consequences, which we are only starting to experience.

WILD BUST OF THE NEW YEAR– Couple busted with marijuana ‘Christmas gifts’ ID’d as parents of Vermont prosecutor
An elderly couple who were busted in Nebraska last week with 60 pounds of marijuana “Christmas presents” for relatives on the East Coast have been identified as the parents of a Vermont prosecutor who has handled some of the state’s most high-profile cases.
Patrick Jiron, 83, and Barbara, 70, of Clearlake Oaks, Calif., were arrested on Dec. 19 in York after police found weed in the back of their pickup truck. The Burlington Free Press later identified them as the parents of Justin Jiron, who is the Chittenden County chief deputy state’s attorney.
“Justin is in no way connected to this allegation other than by relation,” Chittenden County State Attorney Sarah George, his boss, told the newspaper. “Justin is and has been a dedicated public servant for over 15 years, and I assure you he is as surprised and upset about these allegations as anyone.”
Jiron has worked on some of Vermont’s most high-profile cases during his career, including the prosecution of a man who abducted, raped and murdered a University of Vermont senior and another man who went on a shooting spree in Essex that left two dead, according to the Burlington Free Press.
“Justin, of course, loves his parents and is concerned about their welfare,” George added. “However, he is extremely disappointed in their behavior and actions as reported by media outlets.”
George also said Justin will continue working at the office.
Lt. Paul Vrbka of the York County Sheriff’s Department told the York News-Times last week that Jiron’s parents said the “marijuana was for Christmas presents.”
Police found 60 pounds of pot and several containers of concentrated THC during the arrest, estimated to be worth more than $300,000 total. The names of the marijuana strains were written on each bag.
The pair were charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver and no drug tax stamp.
John Campbell, the executive director of Vermont state’s attorney offices, said he has no information from Nebraska police as to whether or not the actions of Jiron’s parents have any direct connection to him.
“I don’t think he knew anything about what his parents were bringing over or what they intended to do with it,” Campbell told the Burlington Free Press. “From what I understand, this is as much as a shock to him and a surprise that it is to anyone else who has heard about it.”

THE SUGAR BEAR CHOPPER MUSEUM COMING TO STURGIS–
Wow! With so much is going on, I forgot to post.
The museum project is in full swing and the response has been very encouraging. Presently, Rick Fairless, founder of Dallas Strokers, is scheduled to present his history in the motorcycle industry on Aug 5 at the Museum during the 2018 Black Hills Rally Week.
The tie-dyed king is a very colorful (no pun intended) individual with a perspective to match of how things are done. I’m really looking forward to this presentation.
Also, we’re working on setting up a swap meet area and info will be coming soon on how that’s working out. We’re working on getting not only the usual Harley parts, but also Indian, Triumph, etc. and antique parts – stay tuned, more to come.

I’M TIRED–
By Robert A. Hall
Very tired.
I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth” to people who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it.
I’m tired of being told that Islam is a “Religion of Peace,” when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family “honour”; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren’t “believers;” of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for “adultery;” of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur’an and Shari – a law tells them to.
I’m tired of being told that, out of “tolerance for other cultures,” we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America and Canada , while no American nor Canadian group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance.
I’m tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate.
I’m tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses while they tried to fight it off?
I’m tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I’m tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.
I’m real tired of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives and actions. I’m tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or big-whatever for their problems.
Yes, I’m damn tired. But I’m also glad to be 73. Because, mostly, I’m not going to have to see the world these people are making. I’m just sorry for my granddaughters and grandson.

Congestion Pricing Cannot be the Future of Transportation Funding, Part 1: NMA E-Newsletter #468
Single-occupant Northern Virginia commuters had a rude awakening in early December when they used Interstate 66 express lanes and found new tolls spiking as high as $44 for commuting the 10-mile stretch between the Capital Beltway and the District of Columbia.
While the Virginia DOT showed that the average round-trip toll during the first week was $14.50, the agency also noted that its dynamic pricing model changes the toll rate every six minutes based on congestion levels, which resulted in single-occupant, single-car rates of $30, $40 and, yes, $44 at times.
VDOT blamed political posturing for complaints by some Virginia legislators about the captive-audience tolling that was breaking the wallets of many motorists. We see it as the politicians actually doing their jobs in representing their constituents.
Early users of the tolled I-66 express lanes will soon be getting confirmation of the actual cost. The chorus against VDOT congestion pricing will undoubtedly get louder.
The I-66 express lane tolling is not the only controversy brewing over congestion pricing.
A fight has been slowly building between the states of Oregon and Washington.
Oregon lawmakers passed a $5.3 billion transportation bill in July which included the use of congestion tolling on I-5 and I-205 beginning at the Washington State line and continuing through the Portland metro area, and a graduated gas tax increase of 10-cents more by 2024.
Portland sits at the northern edge of the state. An estimated 65,000 people or 20 percent of Portland’s workforce commutes from Washington State. Many of the out-of-staters who work in the city do so because they cannot afford the rent or home prices in the Portland area.
Before implementation, Oregon’s interstate tolling plan will need to be approved by Congress. Washington Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler became involved when Clark County, Washington commuters told her that they would be charged unfairly for crossing the two interstate border bridges which are the only ones crossing over the Columbia River in the Portland area.
Herrera Beutler sponsored an amendment in a federal spending bill to prevent Oregon from receiving any funding to implement tolls on interstates in 2018. The bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and is awaiting approval by the Senate.
The Portland Region Value Pricing Policy Advisory Committee continues to meet to put together a plan in case the state can use congestion pricing on these two interstates as a funding option.
In the meantime, two reports came out in December about Washington State’s own congestion-priced express lanes tolling on I-405 in and around the Seattle area.
Earlier this year, the express lanes celebrated their two-year anniversary with this news: In the first two years of operations, $44.5 million in revenue and $28.8 million in profit had been collected (triple the original estimate) which by law, must go back into road projects in the I-405 corridor. The unbridled success of this cash cow has turned a two-year experiment into what is now a permanent project fixture.
The second report came from University of Minnesota researchers who say that the computer algorithm used for congestion pricing should make the tolls rise much more quickly from the 75-cent minimum toward $10 or higher during the critical moments when cars begin using the left lane. The academics suggested that price surging could even happen in mid-trip. Drivers travel 2.5 million miles per day between the Washington cities of Lynnwood and Bellevue which is 11 percent more than two years ago. Ka-ching!
Next week, we’ll explore why New York City’s congestion pricing controversy has heated up at the beginning of Bill de Blasio second term as mayor.

NEW YEARS WISH– I came across these pics of my dad and you. Thought you might like them.
Wishing you a very happy 2018!
–John Kimzey
WOW, NEVER DULL AND THE NEW YEAR WILL BE AMAZING— So, here are the plans, goals aspirations and dreams:
We will be on the Salt with the Salt Torpedo and make some comfortable test passes before pouring the coals to her.
Finish the Splintered Road screen play and get it in the works for a movie production.
Write another Chance Book around Tombstone, Arizona. I wrote an outline for Pat and Brook Kennedy in 2000, but can’t find it. I will and get started. I’m thinking about publishing the first draft in the Cantina for you guys to critique.
I write books and never market them. The Redhead is going to help with that effort this year. I need some guys to go on Amazon and write reviews for my books.
Of course, I need to help my Grandson get his Dyna and FXR back on the road and out of my shop, quick.
And when I need some stress relief, I will work on the Hamster bronze sculpture for a charity effort with Tony Spinalli. We should get started next week and order clay.
