Hey,
Just back from Vegas–good time. You’ll see a report next week about an illusive redhead and the Freemont Street show. I’m working on a project I need some help with. The EPA and especially CARB in California are breathing on motorcycles and spending considerable tax money in the process. I want them to leave us alone and go after the real causes of air pollution in our society. I found out today that 60 percent of the air quality problems in the city of Los Angeles come from the port, the ships and generators. The second largest polluter in the Los Angeles basin is fast food joints and barbecues that emit fat into our Southern California air.
So where does a handful of motorcycles play into this dark picture. Let’s define that issue more toward home. Where do a very small handful of custom or modified motorcycles play into that gray sky picture? They don’t. So why spend millions to regulate them. We’re looking into the sources of pollution all over the planet and what regulators are spending to control each one. If you have some info, drop me a line. I’m working with Stu Prince of Pegasus Fuel Injection. He’s also a professor of engineering at Cal State North Ridge. I’m shooting for a full report at the Cincy dealer show in February. Let’s hit the news, and talk what we love, custom motorcycles:

Myrtle Beach Passes Discriminatory Ordinances–You’ve read the controversy, here’s the bottom line:
On Tuesday September 23rd 2008 the Myrtle Beach City council passed 15 draconian ordinances all in the name of public safety and welfare or so they say. Actually these ordinances are discriminating against a segment of the population and placing any financial shortfalls on the backs of their residents and businesses. Actions such as this are aimed at regulating personal behavior which poses the greatest threat to everyone?s liberties. Where will it stop?
We already have enough laws in effect. These ordinances will really put a strain on our law enforcement, that are overworked, under staffed and already have problems enforcing what we have on the books. This could potentially open up other areas of the city for crimes to take place. The cost of extra law enforcement was offset by the selling of vendor permits in the city. These ordinances will set a precedence which other municipalities may follow suit creating havoc upon our highways. All our road atlases and maps will need to contain the laws for that particular municipality so you?ll know if you?re breaking the law in that area or not. This could be the makings of a fiasco of grand proportions.
South Carolina Code of Laws 5-7-30 states that each municipality of the State, in addition to the powers conferred to its specific form of government, may enact regulations, resolutions, and ordinances, not inconsistent with the Constitution and general law of this State. The helmet ordinance is inconsistent with state law. The council states that these laws are for the safety and welfare of the public but we believe it?s to run off the motorcyclist that attend the rallies so they can pick and choose who they want to visit Myrtle Beach. Historically Myrtle Beach has run off the spring breakers in the early 90?s the hairdressers that used to visit in May and the Shriner?s who used to hold their yearly convention there, who will it be next? Myrtle Beach used to be a resort town, now it?s just a retirement community.
ABATE of South Carolina abhors these types of totalitarian enactments that remove liberties and freedoms of individuals and eventually, will start eroding individual rights granted to us under our Constitution. ABATE of South Carolina challenges the council on the grounds that the municipal power is exceeding the entity?s corporate powers, acting as if it is above state law.

LA CHOP RODS NEW EXHAUST TIPS FOR SAXON MOTORCYCLES– Attached is a photo of the new exhaust tip we’re working on. Unfortunately they’re not a production piece yet so each set has to be hand made right now and the turnout on the end is 2 1/2″ stainless made from 1 u-bend. For us to make a set like this will cost you about $350.00 due to the cost of materials and time involved to make them by hand.
They will of course be much more reasonable if we end up making them as a production piece, a decision we won’t be able to make until we have quantity pricing for both machining and materials so can’t tell you exactly when that might be but definitely beyond your three-week time frame. We stock the heat wrap and clamps and you can do it yourself for $30.00 or we can do it for you for about $100.00 if you take the pipes off, about $150.00 – $175.00 if we get the bike and do it from start to finish.

SUNDAY REPORT FROM BIKERNET IVORY TOWER ELEVATOR– A blonde, a brunette and a redhead enter an elevator. As they walk in they notice a small puddle of white liquid on the floor.
The brunette bends down for a closer look, and states “It looks like cum.”
The redhead stoops down a little closer, takes a deep breath through her nose, and proclaims, “Yes, and it smells like cum.”
The blonde stoops down, closer still, puts the tip of her finger into the puddle, touches it to her tongue and exclaims, “Well, its nobody from our building.” !!!

BRUCE ROSSMEYER DEALERSHIPS FEEL THE PINCH MAY SELL SEVERAL STORES–
I guess it was true because there have been lay offs, demotions, lateral movements, denial of scheduled raises and some pretty stupid policies to try to minimize expenses around here.
Word on the street is there was a deal put together for Rossmeyer to sell Sunrise, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Boca Raton to a group from Colorado headed by Thunder Mountain.
The lastest word is that they were short on financing for the purchase and the date is either rapidly approaching or just passed for them to get passed over. They supposedly have several other interested parties but at least one for sure lined up behind them if they fall through.

S&S CYCLE ENTERS YEAR 51, BRETT SMITH, PRESIDENT RESIGNS– LA CROSSE, WI (October 3, 2008) S&S Cycle Inc. the leader in Proven Performance components and engines for American v-twin motorcycles marks the start of 51 years of business this week. Still glowing with the excitement of the S&S 50th Anniversary Celebration that took place in June of this year, October 1, 2008 marked the start of a new fiscal year for the company. The S&S Cycle Board of Directors, led by Chairman George Smith met to set a course for year 51?and beyond.
Their first order of business was to deal with the impending resignation of S&S president Brett Smith?George?s son and grandson of founders George and Marge Smith–effective December 1, 2008. During his tenure he assisted with the formation of the Motorcycle Industry Council?s American V-Twin Aftermarket Committee, the establishment of both EPA and CARB certified engine programs, and has been a consistent advocate for the v-twin industry on a global scale.
The capstone of his focus on emissions-related product offerings was the release of the proprietary and 50-state 2010 emissions compliant S&S X-Wedge? engine. At the same time, Brett rededicated the company?s efforts regarding classic/vintage components with the release of the SH and P-series engines and with the acquisition of Flathead Power assets in July, 2007. He has also been credited with significantly growing internationals sales, creating annual S&S marketing projects such as this year?s 50th Anniversary Celebration, and establishing several key alliances with companies such as Super Flow, Mobil 1, Gates Drive Belts, and the NHRA.
?It has been an honor serving as a steward to our family business the past 6 ? years,? said Brett Smith. ?I am confident the measures we?ve taken over the past several years with respect to new products like the X-Wedge, our dealer development efforts, rapid international sales growth and a clear focus on emissions related efforts have set a solid foundation on which to build over the next decade.? Brett concluded, ?I?m looking forward to watching things develop as a shareholder and seeking new opportunities for my family and me.?
Chairman George Smith will assume the role of interim CEO and lead the company as Brett transitions out of the presidency. George helped S&S grow dramatically during his past tenure as president, and has served on the Board of Directors since 1980. Since leaving daily S&S operations in October of 1993, George has remained closely involved with the business while assembling a successful racing team, G2 Motorsports, which has influenced the sport of drag racing by developing a complete S&S-powered machine that has changed the face of NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle competition. George?s return to operational leadership will build on the momentum Brett created.
Said George Smith, ?I am proud of the job my son has done for S&S and my parents would be proud as well. He has put together a great team and done a lot over the past several years and I will miss having him at S&S.? George concluded, ?I respect his request to move on and I know he?ll do well at whatever he pursues after taking some much needed time off with Robin and the kids.?
The operational news as S&S enters year 51 is a rededication to performance components. S&S built its reputation designing complete performance packages to make American motorcycles more fun to ride. Now, the focus is back to follow founder George Smith, Sr.?s most famous line ?to make every motorcycle go faster.? There will be more new ?old? products and new ?new? products reinforcing the Company mantra.
Starting with the ?old? new products, the S&S KN-Series engines and a line of KN replacement parts will be available in early November. These 93ci vintage beauties will provide plenty of power, significant improvements over the original design and satisfy a need for riders that love old iron. On the ?new? new front, S&S will be releasing bolt-in high torque cams that increase performance for late model touring applications. Riders of 2008 -?09 baggers will see great performance increases with the availability of bolt on S&S air cleaners and exhaust products?along with several new Hot Set Up Kits. Finally, 2009 will also see S&S introducing a complete line of chrome billet components to upgrade the looks of all S&S engines.
