Governor Schwarzenegger/California Lawmakers Squander Limited Financial Resources on Firearm Owner Registration Scheme– Fairfax, Va. – Governor Schwarzenegger has signed a severe yet impotent gun control measure into law. Assembly Bill 962, taking effect on February 1, 2011, mandates individuals purchasing ammunition to be fingerprinted and registered at the time of sale and outlaws mail order ammunition purchases. AB 962 also requires dealers to maintain these records indefinitely and make them available for inspection by the California Department of Justice.

As an additional burden, ammunition retailers are also required to store ammunition away from purchasers. AB 692 also failed to garner support from Attorney General Brown, and any law enforcement organization. In fact, 15 sheriffs wrote letters of opposition to this legislation.

“This law presents intrusive and unnecessary burdens that will only affect law-abiding firearm retailers and gun-owners, not criminals,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. “At a time when California is facing dire budget problems, California has squandered valuable resources in policing law-abiding Californians instead of investing in substantive measures that target criminals. More than two decades ago, Congress abolished similar requirements to U.S. federal law because ammunition sales records were found to be ineffective for solving crimes. It is indeed regrettable that foolish minds and bogus arguments prevailed over common sense and empirical evidence.”

Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed Senate Bill 585, a bill that would have prohibited the sale of firearms and ammunition on the property or inside the buildings that comprise the Cow Palace in Daly City, just outside of San Francisco. He also signed Senate Bill 175, which will exempt gunsmiths from a vague California law. This exemption will now allow for the exchange of a firearm to or from a gunsmith for purposes of service or repair.

“Governor Schwarzenegger acted in the interest of good public policy with his actions to SB 585 and SB 175. But, in signing AB 962, he has paved the way for one of the most intrusive and ineffective gun control laws that California has seen in recent years,” said Cox.

The National Rifle Association will review all possible options to remove this draconian, requirement from California statute, and will assess legislative and legal remedies to do so.

RETIRED STATE SENATOR, DAVE ZEIN, BECOMES DEER HUNTER–ABATE of Wisconsin celebrated its 35th Anniversary on October 10th, 2009, in Wisconsin Rapids. We were waiting for Sen. Dave Zien to arrive on Friday evening as he was leading musician and movie producer Mike Jones to the event. The deer are at the beginning of the rut season and it’s dangerous to be riding after dark on some of the two lane roads leading to Wisconsin Rapids. That’s exactly the route Dave Zien took, with Mike Jones following him in a borrowed car. Jones phoned me to tell me he could hardly keep up with Zien as he bent his 2009 Road Glide around the twists and turns along Highway 10, east of Stevens Point. “Suddenly, there was a flash of white fur, a blur and then it looked like the Macy’s New Year’s Day Parade, complete with confetti storm,”? Jones said.

Dave Zien had hit a deer at about 60 mph and his briefcase, over stuffed with papers, notes and maps exploded into a blizzard of documents covering the entire two lanes of the highway. Jones pulled over expecting the worst, but it appeared Dave only suffered a contusion to his lower leg. The deer didn’t do as well. The buck was floundering around on the ground, kicking it’s hooves up in the air as a motorist pulled over to see what was going on. Jones shouted, “Put him out of his misery.”? Luckily, the car driver shot the deer and not Zien who apparently was also distressed and in pain at this time. Just then, a local cop pulled up with red and blue strobe lights piercing the cold night air.

By this time, Zien was already on the ground proceeding to disembowel the deer with his K-bar. Uhruh, Semper Fi. The astonished cop asked Mike Jones what the hell was going on, and Jones in shock and confusion said, “I don’t know, I’m a vegetarian.”?

Mike Jones is convinced Zien is a complete mad man. Not only did Zien survive a 60 mph crash into a deer, he gutted the beast out, strapped it to his bike and continued on his way to the ABATE anniversary party. Nothing stops a Marine when he’s on a mission.

Some think Dave hit the deer on purpose because there is rumored to be a brass shortage and ammunition is being hoarded. With deer season just around the corner, perhaps Dave was jumping ahead of the game, harvesting a deer and conserving ammo all at the same time. Who knows what goes on in the mind of the Million Mile Harley man?

This is the year of the SPORTSTER– the low-buck, high-performance, light, agile chopper. We’re going to cover the various elements available from the aftermarket to turn a wrecked Sportster into a hot reliable chopper.

A couple of elements available are 100-inch complete engines from S&S and transmission gear sets from Baker. Paughco builds classic rigid frames, and that’s just a start. The tech is coming together, but here’s the first info from S&S regarding the engine:

S&S Sb100 engines For 1986-’03 Sportster & Buell models. S&S complete engines for Harley-Davidson Sportster and Buell models are available in 100″ displacement.

Sb100 engines… have 4″ stroke with a 4″ bore. Cylinder length is .260″ taller than stock. The 100″ engine will generally fit in stock frames with no modification, but due to the increased cylinder length, requires the S&S billet motor mount to fit in Buell models.

Exhaust modifications may also be required to gain frame clear- ance when installing a 100″ engine in a Buell model.

Compression ratio of the 100″ engine is 10.3:1. Crankcases have 1986-’90 (four-speed) style cam geometry, 1991-up (five- speed) style drive side, and are available only in natural aluminum finish. Primary components, charging system, ignition system, oil pump, and transmission components are not included.

All engines are natural aluminum finish and are only available assembled.

DETROIT BROTHER STAR IN UPCOMING DISCOVERY SHOW– DETROIT- Business hasn’t been too good lately for the Detroit Bros. Custom Cycles shop. Founders Dave and James Kaye hope the magic of TV may soon help.

The brothers are starring in an upcoming Discovery Channel series called “Motor City Motors” that they hope not only will turn around their struggling business, but also provide a boost to their economically challenged hometown.

“I think the show will bring some attention to Detroit and all of the possibilities here — all the available jobs, all the intelligent people that are here and are out of work or are struggling with their job or aren’t getting paid enough,” James Kaye said. “I’m hoping we can really make a difference.”

Each hour-long episode follows the Kayes and their dad, John, as they work to build a one-of-a-kind vehicle over a five-day period. And the stuff they’re building goes way beyond the typical custom bike or car.

In one case, they built a “Festevil,” a kind of a hamster wheel with a 1991 Ford Festiva in the middle. The Kayes removed a three-foot section from the center of the body, then set the subcompact car inside 10-foot steel rings with independent braking for each side.

Series producer Eric Lange said eight of 13 episodes have been shot, and the first one will premiere early next year.

“It was a win-win situation for them. Their bike shop was hurting. And this was a chance to bring Detroit builders in and give a little back to Detroit for them,” Lange said Friday at an open house for media, officials and businesses.

The brothers are given a challenge and a team of workers on Monday and get five days to make it a reality.

In addition to the Festevil, the Kayes also turned a 1929 Model T into a hot rod and transformed a 1992 GMC Suburban into a pothole filler with a 10-foot nitrogen spring-loaded arm, rotating hot box, 500,000-BTU torch and hydraulic tamping front end.

“We throw big challenges at them, which I always love. It’s ‘can you do this?’ That’s all,” said series creator Thom Beers, whose Original Productions also is responsible for “Deadliest Catch” on Discovery Channel and “Ice Road Truckers” on The History Channel.

The Detroit Brothers, both in their 30s, take pride in being from Detroit and hope the show trains a spotlight on the men and women who represent today’s car culture.

“It’s been hectic, terrifying and amazing — a really surreal experience,” Dave Kaye said.On the Net:
