NEW BIKERNET CORRESPONDENT IN KOREA– Here a few more pics from Asia.. Korea Japan.. Vietnam… I went for a ride on Sunday.. washed the bike up.. got the gear on.. took my camera and a bottle of poweraid ( Hang over cure like mother’s milk ). Got on the bike… headed to Jiri san ( Jiri Mountain ). Stopped for a smoke and a cut of hangover cure… Thought I’d take a pick, and wouldn’t you know it. I forgot my fucking camera on the roof of my car in a fucking apartment complex.
Got on the phone called the wife. She went out to look and see if it was still there, and it was. Holy shit, couldn’t believe it. Now I know why my mother always gave me those stupid fucking mittens with the yarn to connect them together, but anyway, was a great sunny day, about 10 degrees Celsius. I was alone on the bike– good times. I will pin the fucking camera to my forehead the next time I head out.
I’m retiring from the service in April, gonna stay in Korea. May go home for a trip in around May-June. I want to get on a salmon river back home… fuck I miss that, brilliant times… All you can hear is the water and the gears in yer head meshing, provided there is enough lash not to drive you over the bend.

**Click HERE BIKERNET FINANCIAL SEMINAR–Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each. The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest, and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He further announced that he would now buy at $20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it! The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him. In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.” The villagers rounded up with all their savings and bought all the monkeys. Then they never saw the man nor his assistant, only monkeys everywhere! Now you have a better understanding of how the stock market works. –from Nick Roberts MORE ON TWIN CAM GEAR CAM TECH– Nice shot of the gear drive on the home page! Just put some of those in myself a couple of years back…you probably know this, but one thing to check, if it’s not in the installation instructions….look at the photo, see where the large gear (cam gear) looks like it’s touching the casing by the bolt hole, left side, third from bottom? On the cam cover, make sure you grind a little meat away from that area so the gear doesn’t hit there when it spins. Not much has to come off. Maybe 1/8th inch, max….. Ride on! PROGRESSIVE SUSPENSION, 430 SERIES SHOCKS– Always the innovator in the custom suspension market, Progressive Suspension has once again upped the ante with the street rod styled 430 series of shocks. Utilizing a high pressure gas mono tube design with deflective disk damping to insure high performance ride control the 430 Series can also be mounted rod up or rod down, depending on your application. Threaded pre-load adjusters allow for tool-less adjustment, and effortless tuning of ride quality. First of their kind, machined aluminum spring perches and street rod styling of the new 430 Series are complimented by smooth lines and a polished chrome body. Available in chrome or contrast cut black anodized finish to match the look of your bike. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress intheir work and lives. Offering his guests hot chocolate, the Professor wentinto the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and anassortment of cups – porcelain, glass, crystal, some plain looking, someexpensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to the hotchocolate. When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said,”Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken, leaving behindthe plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the bestfor yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The cup that you’re drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides whatwe drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; butyou consciously went for the best cups…and then you began eyeing eachother’s cups. Now consider this: LIFE is the hot chocolate; your job, money and positionin society are the CUPS. They are just tools to hold and contain life. Thecup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hotchocolate God has provided us. God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses thecups. The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just makethe best of everything that they have Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. And enjoy yourHOT CHOCOLATE!” –from Rev CarlR NEWS FLASH, RACCOON NAMED BANDIT AFTER BANDIT– Doris had been hearing something in the attic and when I checked I found four baby raccoons. On the other hand nothing slows down. Ah, but what was said is the truth. Find adventure everyday. Find some time to spend with friends and soft seductive women, and dig up some time to relax and tinker in the shop. But don’t go away from Bikernet. Fortunately, we archive every goddamn thing on the site, so you can roll over here any time, night or day, Sundays, Holidays, whenever, and find something new, or that old article or tech you need. Here’s what’s coming up. Paul is going to follow his bike accident on Bikernet and let us know how Geico treats him. Chris Callen just sent me a report on the evil Walmart empire. We have a short succinct tech on a brake component from Rogue, a Knockout Boardtrack feature, a couple more features, some new Girls of Bikernet are headed this way and we find ourselves dedicating a lot of space to Sportsters this year. Paul Garson is going to retro his new 2004 Sportster Custom. Jon Towle is performing a series of illustrative 2008 Sportster roadtests and there’s another Sportster series in the wings. What the fuck is it? It escapes me. And I’m going to build another Panhead desk. You’ll see it come together here on Bikernet. Plus, as of tomorrow, I’m starting to work on my next book. The first rough draft is in the Cantina, but I’m going to shake it up, and you’ll find a reworked Vince and Chance series, then Change strikes out on his own. Hang on, have a helluva weekend and don’t let these snivelin’ financial bastards get you down. Ride Forever, –Bandit

ATTENTION ALL EASYRIDERS BIKE COMPETITORS!!!!!–
Due to an over whelming number of requests, we have decided to add the Pro Class to the Columbus Regional show, this year. The show is being held February 15 thru 17, 2008. This year you can enter the PRO class in Columbus, and possibly walk out as one of the Centerfold Builders for the 2009 Easyriders Bike Show Tour. Here is how it all works.
If you enter the Pro Class, in Columbus, and are one of the three builders to be chosen to move into the Pro Invitational Class, you will advance, immediately, to the Pro Class finals, which will be judged on Sunday, February 17, 2008. It is in the Sunday competition that you will be competing against the other regional show finalists. It will be from this complete field of regional winners that we will choose the 2009 Centerfold Tour Builders.
We have also decided to make the same changes for the Best of Show competitors. In other words, the Judged Class bikes entered in the Regional part of the Columbus Bike Show will be judged on Saturday, February 16, 2008. The three bikes that the judges choose to be the Regional Best of Show winners will automatically advance to be in the Invitational Best of Show category. Along with the Judged bikes, the top three vote getting bikes, in the Spectator Class, as of 9:00 PM on Saturday, February 15, 2008, will also automatically advance to be in the Invitational Best of Show category. All of the Columbus Regional Best of Show winners will be judged, along with all of the other Regional Best of Show winners, from the 2008 Bike Show Tour, on Sunday, February 17, 2008.
All Best of Show winners from the Columbus Regional Judged and Spectator Classes, along with the Pro Class winners from the Columbus Regional Pro Class will be announced on Saturday night, February 16, 2008, at 9:30 PM, from the downstairs stage, in the North Hall. All of the winners of the Invitational Best of Show and Pro Class, along with all of the Columbus Regional winners, will be announced Sunday evening, as it has always been in the past, from the upstairs main stage.
What this will accomplish is that all of the Best of Show winners along with all of the Pro Class winners from the 2008 Bike Show Tour will compete against each other for the well deserved honors. This will make it so there is not a wait for the Columbus Best of Show winners, to be able to finish the competition in February 2009. Simply said, there is no more waiting a year to be finished with the competition.
Also, for Columbus, we have included one wristband ($35.00 value) to your entry, at no additional charge. Simply said, if you show your bike, at the regular price of $50.00 for a basic space or $70.00 for a corner space, you will receive one, complimentary, wristband with your entry. Any additional wristbands will need to be purchased at the regular wristband price of $35.00. Any other upgrades, such as electricity and turntables will also be at the regular additional prices.
If you have already signed up for the show and paid for your wristbands, you will receive a refund, at the show, in the amount of $35.00, for your complimentary wristband.
Please get your applications in as soon as possible. We are taking application in the office until February 13, 2008. After the 13th you can still enter. All you have to do is bring yourself and your bike to the Veterans Memorial Building, in Columbus Ohio. Space is limited, at this hall, so pre register if you can, or get there at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 14, 2008, to be guaranteed a Show Space, as show spaces are on a first come first served basis, for non pre-registered competitors.
We are looking forward to seeing you and your bike at the show!!!!!

BIKERNET FARMS QUARTERLY REPORT– John the farmer was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called ‘pullets’, and ten roosters, whose job it was to fertilize the eggs.
The farmer kept records and any rooster that didn’t perform went into the soup pot and was replaced. That took an awful lot of his time, so he bought a set of tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone so John could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report simply by listening to the bells.
The farmer’s favorite rooster was old Butch, a very fine specimen he was, too. But on this particular morning John noticed old Butch’s bell hadn’t rung at all! John went to investigate. The other roosters were chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing. The pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover.
But to Farmer John’s amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn’t ring. He’d sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.
The result…The judges not only awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize but they awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well.
Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making: who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren’t paying attention.
Vote carefully this year…the bells are not always audible!

STOLEN CREDITS FEATURED IN MAGAZINE– It has recently come to our attention that the January 2008 issue of Easyriders magazine features a motorcycle, “Root Beer Float” that is said to have been built by U.S. Kustoms of Danville, CA. Unfortunately this is not the truth.
The truth is that motorcycle was built by Joe Cree at California Customs for one of our clients. While it may be true that U.S. Kustoms did change some parts on this motorcycle, bars, front fender, etc. the motorcycle was designed, fabricated and assembled by California Customs.
Changing a few parts does not qualify them as the original creator of this motorcycle. We feel this act is nothing short of plagiarism and want to alert our friends in the motorcycling media about this issue.
While we know of several companies that have “borrowed” proprietary designs for parts and sold them as their own designs, this is the first time we have come across a shop taking someone else’s work and putting their name to it, the true definition of plagiarism. This sort of behavior should not be tolerated within our industry by anyone at any time.

RUCKER PERFORMANCE RELEASES ITS 2008 PREDATOR–FORT WORTH, January 24, 2007 Rucker Performance is proud to introduce the 2008 Predator model. Building on the traditional look of V-Twin?s 2007 Custom of the Year, the Predator, features a re-designed, hand-built frame, new billet swingarm, re-designed oil tank, gas tank and rear fender for a more contoured look.
The Predator’s redesigned frame will now be built in house, which will change the profile of the bike appearance making it flow seamlessly from front fender to the newly designed rear fender. Lowering the placement of the oil fill on the redesigned oil tank also enhances the smooth appearance of the new profile, as does the new shape of the gas tank. The billet swingarm will be available in three finishes to complement the new design: polished, painted or chrome.
Although the profile of the bike is changing, the high standard of Rucker Performance is not. ?By building the frame in house, we will be able to offer better quality bikes to our customers. The redesigned profile of the Predator serves to enhance the performance and ride of the bike,? says Erin Rucker, Chief Operations Officer of Rucker Performance. The Predator will be debuting in the 2008 model line up of Rucker Performance motorcycles.
Built in the spirit of raw adrenaline drag racing, the Rucker Performance Predator boasts standard features such as 300-rear tire, polished S&S 124 cubic inch engine and right-side 6-speed transmission.

GREETING FROM THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM– One of the exhibits we’ve had on display for the last six to eight months is an exhibit about Motorcycle Clubs. As part of the exhibit, we had a number of vests with patches representing a variety of clubs. Unfortunately, the owner of those patches has reclaimed his collection. We’re in the process of trying to rebuild the display and are looking for clubs that might be interested.
The idea of this exhibit is to educate the public about the history of motorcycling and present a fair-minded representation of motorcycle clubs in their many forms. I’d like to rebuild the exhibit with themed sections to display, including women’s clubs, family oriented clubs, law enforcement clubs and veterans clubs.
Here’s what I’m looking for:
First choice would be a jacket or vest with the club colors on it that we could have on loan at the museum for a time period of one to two years. Second choice, just the patch itself (no vest or jacket). If we can’t get an actual vest or patch, I’d be interested in a 8.5 X 11 high resolution photo of same that we could display.
Along with the colors of the club, I’d also like to include a brief description of the club, including one paragraph describing the club – year founded, common bond, etc. All colors on display would be in locked cases and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame has security cameras in operation 24 hours a day.
If your club is interested in being represented in this exhibit, please contact me by email at Thanks. BIKERNET FREE DOOR PRIZES GIVEN AWAY CONSTANTLY– Just wanted to drop you a line and say “Thanks” for the great stuff. Got home from work on Thursday, saw a box by the front door, found out I had “won”. Nice surprise on a cold and shitty day here in Oklahoma. Love your site, you tell it like it is, keep looking out for the average rider and provide great articles. Been a fan a long time. Again, thanks for the stuff and a great motorcycle website, –Danny Jones NEW NEW 360 Brake AT V-TWIN EXPO–Stop by our Booth #4225 on the 3rd floor at the V-Twin Expo to check out the NEW 360 Brake We’ll be ready to answer all of your questions! The objectives for redesigning the new 360 Brake were widening the safety margin, increased braking capacity, and simplifying installation process. With these objectives met, Dale Needleman and his team are anxious to release their new design to the industry. “We’ll have our 360 Brake mounted on some awesome bikes from Russell Marlowe’s Custom Cycles and Tom Kapp’s Purple Haze from Art In Motion as well as the individual brake and components for your evaluation,” states Needleman, “so put us on your list of Must See while you’re in Cincy!” –360 Brake EMT & MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT CONCERNS–Vicki is concerned about the lack of training EMT’s get specific to motorcycle crashes. She is also concerned that the right’s community has been harping on crash avoidance instead of injury reduction that they are overlooking the many aspects of injury reduction. Certainly, we do not agree with NHTSA that wearing a helmet is primary to injury reduction. But there are many facets to this and why shouldn’t bikers demand both crash avoidance and injury reduction. Proper training of bystanders and EMT professionals could have a very beneficial impact on survival rates and outcomes. Vicki is doing great work in that area. Hey, have you been talking anymore with House of Harley about an appearance during the 105th Anniversary? There were interested in you, Valerie Thompson and the Assalt Weapan. I think Mike Hupy might contribute to some of the expenses to help sponsor you here. I’ll talk to him if you’re still interested. It’s going to be a good event, and the entertainment is 100% better than the 100th Anniversary. –Pan NEW HORRIFYING LAW DUE TO PASS IN AUSTRALIA–By 2009, your motorcycle is likely to have a front numberplate, even though most of the rest of the world manages without them. That’s the result of a draft regulatory impact statement authored by Vic Roads, the traffic authority for the Australian state of Victoria. The organization has been working on the issue at the behest of a national council of transport ministers. Testing of prototype plates has been completed and a final design for the laser-cut plastic identifiers, which are the same size as current rear plates, has been arrived at. Three main types of mounting have been identified: adhesive fixing to a fairing or windscreen, bracket mounting above or below the headlight, and unspecified custom mounts. Estimated respective costs are $25, $70 and up to $150. It is expected that state road registration authorities will bear the cost of the plates for the 540,000 registered bikes nationally which will need to be retro-fitted, but not for the mounting. New bikes will be charged for the cost. Vic Roads estimates the initial fit-out of the national fleet will cost $22.1 million in 2009, $13.5 million of which will be covered by road authorities and the remainder of which will be borne by owners. An additional $10 million is expected to be spent on a national propaganda campaign to support the move. The report claims there will be a 2-4 per cent reduction in motorcycle road trauma as a result of the change, mostly due to a reduction in speeding because of the increased chance of being nabbed by a speed camera. It also claims that approximately 49 per cent of motorcycles detected speeding are currently not identified because of the lack of front numberplate. Few countries in the world (India and Singapore are among them) currently use front plates. Web: –By Guy Allen HELMET HAIR MAGAZINE. FROM THE FATBOB FILES–This is now 2008. Me with the old girl, I always dug the 37 flathead that was in Early Riders, it was also in Bob Ts pics, must have been one of your bros. I always wanted an old original sled when I was young, but hell you know we were lucky to have one. I remember waiting for income tax to pick up my engine from Lake Shore H-D. Carl Allen is the wrench and if he goes to fucking Kmart Ill have them done there. He built the Warner Riley Sportster engine. He’s been at Lake Shore for about 33 years. He was around Leo Payne in Cal years ago. Bikernet was a brain storm, Dale Walksler told me websites are the future. I guess he was right. –FATBOB PERSIANS ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE BIKERNET CORRESPONDENT IN WEST HOLLYWOOD– You know what they say about little things making big differences. Like stopping to buy a bathroom rug. If I hadn’t and just kept on going to the gym I wouldn’t have ended kissing the pavement fairly hard when a brand new Lotus zoomed a left turn in the intersection in front of me. As I was doing my Evel Knievel act the Lotus kept on going, then stopped a block a way for a couple seconds then took off. My BMW went down on the left side, the big jugs acting as safety bars and I got my leg out and hit on my right side at my lower back and hip. Needless to say traffic on Wilshire just kept on going around me. Amazing. Fortunately a group of people in a SUV behind me saw the thing go down and came to the rescue. They called the cops after going after the Lotus that had circled around the block and parked, watching me in the road. The SUV people, a mom and four teen-agers went up to the car and id’ed them as two Persians in a car with no license plate but there was a dealers plate, Beverly Hills Sports Cars. The Lotus took off when they witnesses it. Hard to hide a brand new yellow Lotus. Being Persians they also hang out in the Westwood UCLA area and probably won’t be hard to fine. And I’ll be checking at the car dealership. The cops said they’d be looking as well and told me to contact them I find anything out. Of course I’m waiting for the pain to make itself known when I wake up. I did feel click clacking in my vertebrae and lost some skin on my forearm but limbs and head intact. The witnesses thought I had done myself in, apparently I make significant impact, but I did my relaxation thing and didn’t stiffen up so was able to limp away. My bike got plenty of scrapes and dents but I was able to ride it home. I have insurance although, Geico has to check since I didn’t impact the car so they call it a “Ghost Car” instead of technically a hit and run altho the cops call it a hit and run. They did a report, etc and the Paramedics gave me a choice of going to the hospital or not. I didn’t want to leave my bike so I rode it home and took some Alleve. It doesn’t hurt too much if I don’t move. Just now, and it’s past one, the woman from Russ Brown’s office called me as I had left a message earlier, in case I need an attorney. I can’t believe she called me. Incredible. She’s going to call back in the morning when Russ is in and I figure out about the doctor thing. If I go to my doctor he’ll just send me all over the place to get x-rays and stuff, so I might just go the UCLA emergency room and do the whole thing there. But in any case, I was way lucky, although dealing with this is nothing I need at the moment. Fortunately my fingers still work. Talk to you later. Good people. –Mr. Pete TEXAS-SIZE COLLECTION OF CLASSIC AUTOMOBILES AND MEMORABILIA TO MAKE AUCTION DEBUT–(CHATHAM, Ontario – January 29, 2008) – The focus of the collector car world will shift to Fort Worth, Texas in April as RM Auctions proudly presents the private collection of Mr. Wayne Davis. Tentatively scheduled for April 19, 2008, this exciting no-reserve sale will offer some 90 classic automobiles, as well as 50 lots of automotive-themed memorabilia, in Davis’ hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. A lifelong auto enthusiast, Davis first joined the car industry after high school. At the age of 23, he began his own restoration shop, “Thunderbirds Etc”, first concentrating on 1955-1957 Thunderbirds before turning his hand to also focus on prewar classics, popular American marques from the 1940s and 1950s, and custom and street rods. Armed with an unwavering passion for the industry, an intimate knowledge of mechanics and high attention to detail – as reflected in his the motto, “My cars run as good as they look”- Davis carved a reputation for setting world-record prices at national collector car auctions. Since 1995, he has balanced his restoration hobby with working as President of Regency Conversions in Fort Worth, Texas – the company he eventually bought in 2004 and recently sold. This April, as Davis prepares to embark on retirement, he is offering the collector world a rare opportunity to purchase the cars that have brought him so much joy over the years. Assembled over the past two decades, Davis’ impressive collection reflects his ardor for the great American cars of the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, as well as featuring various custom and street rods. The collection also includes a number of early Cadillacs from the ’40s and ’50s. “All have been carefully maintained, with many having undergone expensive restorations,” says Davis in describing their condition. Highlights of the auction line-up include a highly coveted “Triple Crown”, comprising of a low-production 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, often described as the most beautiful and special American car builtin the fifties; a rare 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible; and a 1953 Oldsmobile Fiesta Convertible, regarded as a “dream car” at the time of introduction. The collection also includes an extremely rare 1963 Ghia, one of only 26 examples produced; a handsome 1957 Dual Ghia, at it’s prime regarded as a “Hollywood icon” due to is popularity with celebrities (including the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin); and a custom one-off 1947 Cadillac Limousine “Woodie”. For those with a penchant for country music, the auction line-up also features a 1957 Chevrolet Convertible, formerly owned by American country star, Alan Jackson; he reportedly bought the car when he hit the “big time”. The memorabilia collection is just as diverse with many fascinating finds. Amongst a host of special automotive themed collectibles is an original 30 foot neon Cadillac script sign from the late 1940s. The Wayne Davis Collection event marks the first time that virtually all of Davis’ cars have been offered at public auction, presenting various unique ownership opportunities for discerning collectors and making this one sale you will not want to miss. For further information on the sale of this magnificent private collection, visit BRUCE ON CELL PHONE USE LAWS– …the Governors Highway Safety Association notes that despite the dozens of laws in place and hundreds of bills proposed, “No state completely bans all types of cell phone use (handheld and hands-free) while driving.” In other words, most cell bans apply only to hand-held devices, and contain loopholes that allow the conversations–and therefore the distraction–to continue using hands-free technology. As I have stated before, it is the conversation, and not the device, that creates the distraction. Here is what the Center for Auto Safety’s Executive Director Clarence Ditlow said in his January 2007 letter to NHTSA’s Nicole Nason: “Research has consistently shown that operating a motor vehicle while talking on a cell phone–whether hand-held or hands-free–increases the risk of an accident to three to four times the experience of attentive drivers. The general consensus of the scientific community is that there is little, if any, difference in crash rates involving hands-free versus hand-held cell phones. The two-way conversation on a cellular phone, not the task of holding the phone, causes a cognitive distraction. This distraction induces ‘inattention blindness,’ inhibiting drivers’ abilities to detect change in road conditions.” Despite the incontrovertible evidence that remote conversations on hands-free devices are just as distracting–and therefore just as dangerous–as those conveyed via hand-held units, legions of unenlightened legislators from coast to coast are seeking to garner media attention and public favor by proposing laws that restrict only the use of hand-held devices while driving. In the Florida statehouse, for example, we currently have no less than eight different bills proposed that would restrict the use of cell phones while driving (H0175/S0266, H0193/S0504, H0357/S1266, S0680 and S1314). Only two of them apply to hands-free as well as hand-held devices (S0680 and S1314), and they are the only two with no companion. And what will the likely consequence of all these “feel-good” measures be? To be sure, many lives that might have been saved by focusing on the distraction rather than the device will still be lost. And beyond that, well let’s see… After Chicago implemented a partial cell phone driving ban, the telecom industry reported that “Sales of hands-free headsets are being spurred by a new law [that] will result in $50 fines for driving with a cell phone pressed to your ear.” The same thing happened in California, where banning only hand-held cell phones while driving generated a “…boost in the sales of hands-free accessories, such as Blue Tooth ear pieces and speaker-phone car kits.” And in Pennsylvania recently, the mere rumor of an impending ban on hand-held devices “…caused some wireless sales to soar.” So regardless of legislative intent, about the only actual consequence we can count on from half-way measures and partial cell phone bans is a boom in the sale of mobile telecommunications products employing hands-free technology like BlueTooth. And where are those products made? Well according to this Global Sources Bluetooth Headset Manufacturers & Suppliers directory……of the 443 suppliers listed, 434 (98%) are based in China (Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan), 4 in Korea, 1 each in Singapore and the Philippines, and only 3 in the U.S. Bad news, but there is one potential upside here: If nothing else, all those partial cell phone bans are bound to funnel millions of dollars–and with them thousands of jobs–overseas. That will leave many Americans with less money to spend on cars and gas … which should reduce the number of vehicles on the road, the number of miles we travel, and thereby the number of traffic accidents. So, we just might end up saving a life or two after all! –Bruce Arnold It’s interesting, the laws about cell phone use. Jeremiah recently drove his new Toyota Tundra pickup over to the Bikernet Headquarters, to show it off. He was most excited about the lavish Kenwood GPS/entertainment system. On our way to scarf Burritos in San Pedro he toyed with the system incessantly, changing channels, watching DVDs, playing music, looking up restaurants and whore houses in the directory and following our GPS path. Good god. How would he have time to drive, if his cell phone rang? It rings all the time.–Bandit TYPO DISCOVERED IN EVENT POSTER– Here is the poster the typo is in the guest speakers name. It should be Jerry Hatfield, but it is Jerry Hatifield a collectors item if I do say so myself. –Shotgun BIKERNET GOES TO THE DOGS OF ZEN– I’ve been meaning to write and just say thanks for posting my dog story. I appreciate it. Your shift of the identity of the “Dog” in the teasers/titles was pretty cute, and I laughed about that. That “was” good… You’re alright. Most of the feedback I’ve gotten has been that I should have shot the dog, or that I’m getting soft in my old age. A few folks, who happen to know me well, smiled and said that they can’t “believe” the dog is alive. I actually did a good thing. I was also counseled on my excessive use of profanity, and informed that “I AM” officially, the Devil. Generally, it appears that folks like the story. It makes you think, and that’s good. Somewhere in this feedback I got told that I need to find some “peace.” That actually got me lost for a little while inside my head. It’s just something that I do from time to time, as I sort through the myriad piles of “stuff” I have stored up in there… Since I’m currently inside my head, I’ll share… Though we describe it as “finding” peace, it’s not quite like that. You can’t really “find” peace… It’s not a thing, or a place… Peace kind of “happens”. It’s a state of consciousness… In my experience you create it… It only comes from within…It’s everywhere and in everything… You bring it to places and give it to things… It only becomes tangible when “you” STOP trying to physically fight the world… or control the world… or, maybe force your “Will” upon something. It’s an inner calmness, an acceptance… I know well my weaknesses, but trust deeply in my own strengths and abilities… It’s an ability to focus and direct your thoughts in harmony with your surroundings. You still retain all the power to channel and direct yourself, but you do so in a way that uses your surroundings to enhance your own abilities. I’ve found peace in the middle of a creek in the wilderness. And when a butterfly chanced to light upon my extended fingertip…I’ve found it in the middle of a raging firefight…I’ve found it in a crib as little blankets rose and fell with tiny breathes at 3AM.I’ve found it in the middle of unspeakable carnage…And I find it daily as I ride my Harley. Challenges come in all shapes and sizes… and packages… For example: Our vision of a beautiful day is shattered as we see a spiked wrecking ball adorned with the rotting flesh of hapless former victims swinging viciously towards us, intent on our destruction!!! A simple sidestep avoids collision, and … It whizzes silently and harmlessly by me…Perhaps I smile as it creates a breeze to cool me in the summer’s heat…How did you react? Did you sidestep as well? Did you waste your time cringing and being horrified or outraged at the visual, emotional image I created– and DIE? I was once labeled a “survivor”. I guess I’ll buy into that, as I sure ain’t dead yet! As a survivor, I think that understanding and acceptance of the nature of physics, action/reaction, or the world around us allows us to expend relatively minimal effort and effectively stop influences attempting to force us one way or the other… Seemingly insignificant effort is rewarded greatly… If you look, see, absorb, and understand your surroundings… I most certainly can’t physically “stop” the motion of the wrecking ball, but I surely can use it to my advantage, if I just “think”… Thanks again for posting the story, and I wish you “peace” in your endeavors, Sir. –Kev

“Vendors will be paid,” Nace said of the 180 industry vendors who are currently on the past due list, including Bikernet.com. The company will face some bankruptcy proceedings and a bidding process, but the DIC process should move forward quickly and hopefully CCI will be cooking shortly. We’ll keep you posted.

PROGRESSIVE DATA SHOWS EVEN VETERAN BIKERS COULD USE BASIC TRAINING WHEN THEY SWITCH BIKES– MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio ? January 28, 2008 ? Whoever coined the phrase, ?it?s just like riding a bike,? probably never switched motorcycles. That?s because even experienced riders can be pretty wobbly when they hop on an unfamiliar bike, according to data from the country?s largest motorcycle insurer, Progressive.
The study of almost 2 million motorcycle policies over a five-year period finds that riders who switch bikes are nearly 70 percent more likely to crash than riders who keep the same bike.
?Most people already know that riding can be especially dangerous for new bikers,? said Rick Stern, a Progressive motorcycle product manager who is also a rider. ?But our data shows that the less familiar you are with your bike, the more likely you are to be involved in a collision, regardless of your experience.?
The study also found cruiser riders who switch to sport bikes are three-and-a-half times more likely to crash. That?s more than double the risk they?d have than if they just switched to another cruiser.
Sport bikers, on the other hand, can reduce their risk by more than a third just by switching to a cruiser.
?We want experienced riders to know their risks so they can take extra precautions when they replace their bikes,? said Stern. ?It?s a good idea for riders to take their new bike out for a couple of shake down cruises in a parking lot before hitting the open road.?
Even people who have been riding for years can benefit from practicing the basics on their new bike, Stern said, including low-speed riding, turning, shifting and swerving, and higher-speed panic stopping.
After all, if the goal is to keep the dirty side down and the shiny side up, there?s no substitute for experience?and not just experience on the road, but also on the bike.

NEW S&S 50th ANNIVERSARY WEBSITE GOES LIVE– The new website is packed full of information about the historic event. Designed with an interactive approach, the site allows users to navigate easily from screen to screen and get a solid start on planning their weekend in La Crosse. Local businesses and community information is instantly available with just a few clicks of your mouse.
“We worked with the entire community to set the standard for a motorcycle rally in the United States,” said S&S president, Brett Smith. “We felt having a full feature website dedicated to supporting a rally such as our 50th Anniversary Celebration was a necessary part of that.” Smith went on to say, “When you have everyone involved and supporting an effort like this, the website is a seamless integration of everyone’s effort and the services they will provide the visiting enthusiasts, making their experience here one to remember.”
Visitors to the new site will be able to check out who is in the build, look at maps of the area, visit a live web cam of La Crosse, find campgrounds and hotels, book their seats on celebrity river cruises with the builders and shop for S&S 50th Anniversary apparel.
“Building this new site was both challenging and exciting, as it gave me an opportunity to use Web 2.0 technology and AJAX programming components,” said S&S Webmaster Kevin Sather. “Additionally, this new site is the groundwork for the new version of the S&S main website that will be introduced later this year.”
The S&S 50th Anniversary Celebration will take place June 27-29, 2008 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The event will feature 50 of the world’s best builders creating 50 bikes, a celebration of S&S history and a community wide party to celebrate the event. .
REQUEST TO ALL STATE MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS AND NATIONAL RIGHTS GROUPS– As many of you now know, ABATE of California is closely monitoring an Appellate Court challenge to the validity of the enforcement of the mandatory helmet law here.
Our Board of Directors has voted in the majority to support this case fully. Furthermore, ABATE of California established the ABATE Judicial Fund in order to accept donations to assist in the legal costs of such litigation. ABATE made an initial contribution of $25,000.00 in establishing this fund. Our attorney is Wendy Lascher of Lascher & Lascher, Ventura, California. The administration of the funds is simple. Attorney submits an invoice for work done on the case, and we send payment.
This court case has four plaintiffs, Steve Barron, Steve Bianco, Pat Holmes and myself, Don Blanscet. No ownership of this case is claimed by any one organization or group, but instead belongs to the plaintiffs. Our opinion is that this case belongs to every motorcyclist in California. Steve Barron and Pat Holmes are past presidents of their ABATE Locals, and I’m the Executive Director of ABATE of California.
ABATE of California is officially asking that the various State Motorcycle Organizations help us win this important court case by donating to the ABATE Judicial Fund. Make checks payable and mail to: ABATE Of California; 10240 7th Ave; Hesperia, CA 92345-2631.

IVIE RACING, LLC INTRODUCES AN INDUSTRY FIRST AUTOMATIC LOCKING MOTORCYCLE TRANSPORT DEVICE–Memphis, TN – January 24, 2008 – Ivie Racing, LLC, a Memphis, TN based developer and manufacturer of aftermarket parts for the motorcycle industry, introduces the industry’s first automatic locking, strapless motorcycle transport device. The Freestand is a patent pending device for safely and securely transporting a motorcycle without the use of straps to hold the bike in place on a trailer, truck bed, or transporter.
“The Freestand is unique in that it does not require the rider to do anything other than push the bike into the stand to secure it for transport or storage,” said Mark Ivie, inventor of The Freestand. “While there are other strapless transport devices on the market, this is the first that does not require the bike to be manually locked to the stand.”
No Pressure on the Suspension
Because the stand attaches to the motorcycle’s front forks, there is no pressure put on the suspension system that can cause the fork seals to leak. “Since there is no threat of destroying your fork seals, you can leave the bike in the stand indefinitely without the worry of too much pressure being put on the front suspension system,”said Ivie. “That is a benefit to many of us who use trailers to store our bikes.”
Other Uses for the Stand
For the off road bike owners, the stand can also be removed from the hauler and used as bike stand. Using the stand also saves space allowing for more bikes in the same amount of space or more room for gear and other items.
TWIN CAM S&S GEAR DRIVE TECH REVIEW– That was a really good article about the gear drive work. Pictures and descriptions were great! I s’pose the guy has been told this, but he looks like that B-list actor, Andy Dick…
Enjoy those gears. I can hear mine, but it’s actually kind of a cool noise….

We also need to mention the pushrod adjuster locking system. This particular set of pushrods have a stationary threaded shafts pressed into the aluminum pushrod. The tip is adjustable and the lock nut must jam against it and not the pushrod above.–Wrench

PHOENIX, Arizona (January 22, 2008) Preeminent international auction house, RM Auctions, has kicked off the 2008 collector car calendar in grand style with a highly successful auction event in Phoenix, Arizona.Held at the luxurious Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, it was standing room only at the single-day auction, which attracted a fashionable crowd of collectors from across North America and Europe. The considerable plunge in the Dow Jones during the week did not seem to affect the outcome of the RM sale, with total sales exceeding $26.7 million for 88 investment quality automobiles, with six motor cars breaking the million-dollar mark.
“Despite the current financial climate, outstanding cars will always bring exceptional prices,” said Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Auctions.
“Proof is clearly in the results one of the world’s most significant and attractive Packards is worth more today than it was yesterday, and the auction was extremely well attended, with bidders from all around the world taking part. When it was all said and done, the strong sales results set the scene for a promising year ahead,” he added
Prewar cars dominated the top-sellers list, headlined by a Pebble Beach winning 1934 Packard Twelve Coupe and a stunning 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Cabriolet, both of which attracted spirited bidding with the gavel falling at an impressive $2,035,000 each.
The sports and racing segment of the market also continued to prove strong, with a 1963 Shelby AC Cobra, the first Cobra sold to the public and one of just three factory competition examples, attracting a top bid of $1,732,500. Another top-seller in this category was an extremely rare 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB, which brought $1,375,000 on the block.
Additional auction highlights include: An elegant 1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton with coachwork by LeBaron, sold for $1.76 million.
A 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt concept car, also by LeBaron, brought $1.32 million.

A magnificent 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster attracted a final bid of $742,500
A 1935 Pierce-Arrow 12 Convertible Coupe, one of only four known surviving examples, sold for $374,000
A beautifully restored 1969 Iso Grifo Coupe brought $308,000.
RM Auctions will head to Florida next month for the annual Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale event, closely followed by the much-anticipated Automobiles of Amelia Island auction, which will be held at the elegant Ritz-Carlton Hotel in March and coincide with the famed Amelia Island Concours d?Elegance.

NEW BILL PROPOSED IN JACKSONVILLE–TALLAHASSEE — A proposal to stiffen penalties for motorcyclists who ride recklessly or at high speeds touched off a debate in a state House committee.
Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, has proposed a measure that could lead to the forfeiture of violators’ motorcycles if they exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more or are charged with reckless driving. The measure also could lead to their losing their licenses to ride motorcycles for 10 years, if convicted.
Lopez-Cantera told the House Infrastructure Committee on Thursday that the proposal is designed to address high-speed stunt riding. He played a video from South Florida that showed motorcyclists buzzing in and out of traffic at high speeds and doing tricks such as popping wheelies.
He said such riding endangers motorcyclists and other people on the road.
“This has become a plague in our state,” Lopez-Cantera said.
But the measure drew opposition from motorcycle advocates, such as James “Doc” Reichenbach, president of ABATE of Florida Inc., a group that has long lobbied on motorcycle issues.
Reichenbach said the state shouldn’t single out motorcycle riders for increased penalties, as it also has problems with people in cars driving recklessly.
“This is a discriminatory bill,” Reichenbach said.
The committee did not vote on the bill Thursday, and Chairman Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City, said he expects Lopez-Cantera to make changes.
Lopez-Cantera has already scaled back the bill from an initial proposal that would have increased penalties for motorcyclists riding 30 mph or more over the speed limit.

At last, the first copy of the book is in my hands, proudly, the product of so many late nights, is announced to be out by February 15th at every major bookstore and some other stores (like Target, Wallmart and such) of course it will be also available through the internet and at my website, I should be receiving a partial lot of my book in the next couple of weeks and will be available directly from me (I’ll humbly sign them if wanted to) Ahh… the book is called How to build a Bobber on a Budget published by Motorbooks International and written by yours trully. I really am not the right person to review my own book… But, it’s more or less, some of the tricks and techniques that I have used at the shop for so long, also how to use your brain instead of a Platinum card and a catalog to build a cool, reliable motorcycle. There are many plans of cool rides in the upcoming year, plus some book dates at different events. Since I did not have the time before I want to wish everyone the best year ever, as we all know, things can only get better and more so right after the next November… We are planning on another Haiti ride by Fall… –Jose HARLEY-DAVIDSON CONTINUES EPIC RIDE WITH ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME CONCERT EVENTS–— Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Daughtry, Black Crowes, ZZ Top, Buddy Guy and More to Perform During the Motor Company’s 105th Anniversary — MILWAUKEE (January 21, 2008) – Harley-Davidson’s 105th Anniversary Celebration in late August is shaping up as the music event of 2008 with today’s announcement that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, along with Billboard 200’s top-selling artist Daughtry, will headline separate concerts over the course of the four-day event in Milwaukee. BUELL ULYSSES XB12XT IS EAGER FOR ACTION–New Adventure Sportbike Delivers Street Sizzle and Thrilling Touring.
EAST TROY, Wis. (January 21, 2008) – Imagine a motorcycle that is just as comfortable carving canyons as it is eating up miles of highway and back roads on a long distance tour. That kind of adventurous versatility is distinctly delivered by the 2008 Buell Ulysses XB12XT.
The new Buell Ulysses XB12XT model was introduced today as the second model in the Buell Ulysses family of adventure sportbike motorcycles, which possess the handling and soul to own every corner.
Boasting the intuitive handling and tremendous torque that Buell has come to symbolize, the XB12XT creates a stirring sport riding experience on a capable long-distance motorcycle. Based on the Buell Ulysses adventure sport bike, the XB12XT features a specially-tuned shorter travel suspension and lower standard seat height, standard tall windscreen, Pirelli Strada sport touring tires and standard lockable top box and side luggage cases.
“The XB12XT will dish out considerable comfort and potent performance at every turn,” said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “The new suspension and many other features will let riders and passengers enjoy this motorcycle on all kinds of roads. It’s the perfect bike for zipping through the city, getting out to the country and back again, or the other way around.”
By focusing on paved road performance, the XB12XT suspension springs and damping were optimized to soak up road imperfections, which allowed a reduced suspension travel, resulting in a lower ride height and thus a lower center of gravity.
With a commanding riding position behind wide athletic handlebars, the XB12XT has a tall front screen to buffer the wind. Standard heated hand-grips warm the rider’s hands in colder climates. The grips are rated at 18 watts per side on the high setting and 11 watts per side on the low setting. The XB12XT has two 10 amp/12-volt accessory power outlets (on the dash and under the seat) and an integrated helmet lock for additional convenience.
The XB12XT provides the rider and passenger abundant storage space with lockable and detachable side and top luggage cases. There is also an additional storage compartment under the textured seat, while the 4.4 gallon fuel-in-frame reservoir gives the XB12XT substantial riding range.
In addition to its substantial storage capacity, the Ulysses XB12XT is also ideally suited for two-up riding with a comfortable passenger seat, innovative multi-function Triple tail backrest and sturdy grab rails.
The XB12XT features fully adjustable Showa suspension front and rear for ample ride comfort, agility and versatility. The 43 mm inverted front forks and rear shock with remote reservoir and dial adjust spring preload accommodate a wide range of riding styles and conditions, as well as passenger and luggage weight. A new progressive urethane bumper spreads compression forces to help absorb the rigors of uneven road conditions while the XB12XT is fully loaded. Overall suspension travel is 4.9 inches, while ground clearance is 5.9 inches with a seat height of 30.7 inches. When the road is exhilarating and twisty, the XB12XT is a truly exciting sport motorcycle, propelled by a 1203 Thunderstorm V-Twin that is growling with 84 ft. lbs. of torque and delivers 103 hp of air-cooled punch.
SUPERBOWL SEAT– A man had 50 yard line tickets for the Super Bowl. As he sits down, a man comes down and asked the man if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him.
“No”, he said, “the seat is empty”. “This is incredible”, said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl , the biggest sport event in the world, and not use it ?”
Somberly, the man says, “Well… the seat actually belongs to me. I was supposed to come here with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we have not been together since we got married in 1967.”
“Oh I’m sorry to hear that. That’s terrible. But couldn’t you find someone else – a friend or relative or even a neighbor to take the seat?”
The man shakes his head, “No. They’re all at the funeral.”

Harley-Davidson’s sponsorship began with the UFC 79: NEMESIS event December 29, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, as witnessed by a sell-out audience of more than 11,000 and millions more on television around the world.
Harley-Davidson sponsorship of the UFC and WEC events includes its historic Bar & Shield logo placement in the center spot on the Octagon? canvas, as a press conference and weigh-in backdrop and in other event locations. In addition, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and advertisements will appear at other UFC and WEC events and locations. The Company is also encouraging its independent dealers to hold UFC “fight night” events and customer parties in conjunction with a limited number of appropriate UFC events.
The first such dealer events begin with UFC 80: RAPID FIRE, held today in Newcastle, England, which will be broadcast live at noon Pacific Time (3 p.m. ET) as “The Prodigy” BJ Penn faces Joe “Daddy” Stevenson for the UFC World Lightweight Championship.

BIKERNET INTERPLANETARY HEADQUARTERS UFO CONFERENCE–Its been some years since the Northeast hosted a major UFO conference, but next month will see a major effort to fill that void. The Atlantic UFO Conference is, as is often the case, the result of a small group of people working very hard to create a quality venue, and hopefully, an annual conference.
It’s scheduled to take place in Atlantic City, NY the weekend of February 15-17. Budd will be the featured speaker, along with Rich Dolan, myself, and a roster of others. First efforts are always the toughest and this is an event worth supporting. Please visit their website at http://www.atlanticcoastufos.com/speakers.htmlhttp and consider joining us there. Hoping to see you next month in Atlantic City, and at future IF seminars in New York City.

BIKERNET BLONDE FILE OPEN–A gorgeous petite blonde walks by, and the man immediately gets anerection. The woman notices his erection, comes over to him and says… “Did you call for me?”
The man replies “No. What do you mean?”
“You must be new here,” she says. “Let me explain…it’s a rule herethat if you get an erection it implies you called for me.”
Smiling, she then leads him to the side of the swimming pool, lies down on a towel, eagerly pulls him to her and happily lets him have his way with her.
Finished, the man continues to explore the colony’s facilities.
He enters the sauna and as he sits down, he farts. Within minutes ahuge, hairy man lumbers out of the steam room toward him…
“Did you call for me?” says the hairy man.
“No…what do you mean?” says the newcomer.
“You must be new,” says the hairy man. “It’s a rule that if you fart,it implies that you called for me.” The huge man easily spins thenewcomer around, bends him over a bench and has his way with him.
The newcomer staggers back to the nudist colony office, where he isgreeted by the smiling, naked receptionist…
“May I help you?” she says.
“Here’s my membership card. You can have the key back and you can keep the $500 membership fee.”
“But sir,” she replies, “you’ve only been here for a few hours…youhaven’t had the chance to see all our facilities.”
“Listen lady,” the man replies, “I’m 68 years old…I get an erectiononce a month…but I fart 15 times a day! I’m outta here !!”

INTERMOT Cologne 2008– In 2008, INTERMOT Cologne (8th to 12th October) will offer the German and international trade even more services to ensure that planning a visit to the fair will be efficient, painstaking and in linewith the trade visitors’ needs. In addition tothe Dealer Card, a special admission ticket for trade visitors which offers numerous benefits, the new “Matchmaking” online service enables buyers from around the world to arrange their trade fairvisits in line with their specific needs during therun-up to the fair – and at the same time engage in a dialogue with exhibitors to request meeting appointments, product price quotes and information about product ranges.
An Internet-based communication platform, Matchmaking makes it possible for trade dealers to establish contact with INTERMOT Cologne 2008 exhibitors even before the trade fair officially opens. Thistool can be used to submit questions to theexhibitors – to one exhibitor, to a selected list of companies or to all suppliers in a specific product group. This is a great advantage, and particularly for major trade fairs like INTERMOTCologne, where more than 1,100 suppliers present thebreadth – and above all the depth – of the product range of the motorised two-wheel vehicles sector.
In 2006, for example, 506 exhibitors from 33 countries presented products from theparts/accessories segment; 299 companies from 25 countriesexhibited products in the clothing/riding equipment segment; and 254 companies from 22 countries exhibited motorised vehicles. With Matchmaking, trade dealers can quickly and easily gatherinformation about companies and their product lines. Theexhibitors then respond by e-mail, allowing trade dealers to make appointments for meetings in a targeted manner, even before the event. And it all can be done comfortably and conveniently at home orin the office, so trade visitors are assured ofmaximum efficiency when planning their visits.

D&D EXHAUST QUESTION OF THE WEEK–
Q: What is your best performing pipe?
A: The 2 into 1 Boarzilla and Fat Cat exhaust systems are our best performing exhaust pipes for Softails, Dynas, Sportsters and Dressers. The Boarzilla is specifically designed with a larger diameter pipe for performance motors that have been built and live on steroids.
Q: How do your exhaust systems compare with other aftermarket pipes?
A: We know you want flawless chrome. That is why each one of our pipes are delivered with show-quality chrome. Also, we know you want performance. Our senior management team spends more time in the Dyno room than it does in the back office. This ensures that you get the best looking product and the best performing product available today.

IT’S GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER SHOW TIME–No drinks or relaxing. I need to hit the showers and the wicked LA freeway system to Pomona in the rain showers. It’s grizzly out there, for It Never Rains In Southern California, bullshit. This show handles the judging more professionally than I’ve ever seen at any bike show. The judges have a check off sheet to categorize each entrant.
The owners don’t pick their class, the judge handles that. Then judging is handled very specifically, and each bike is “Judged.” That means I must fill out a lengthly form on each bike that’s shared with the owner, although he doesn’t see the actual score. It’s a lengthly involved process, but there’s no bullshit involved and the owner get to see the judge’s comments.
When we started the Easyriders Judged Class, I designed a judging form and coached the judges each show on criteria and judging procedure. All the judges need to be on the same page or the scores flounder out of whack. This show is handled much the same way, plus everything is documented.
There you have it. A Buell brake tech is in the works, our Bikernet Metric.com features are flying in and I’ll be around for the Sunday Post. First of next week I’ll finish the S&S Gear drive installation article and Humble will wrap up the feature on Dissel’s bike. Hang on. There’s never a dull moment around here.

COAST TO COAST BIKER NEWS
Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish,
National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
EUROPE QUESTIONS THE ROLE FOR MOTORCYCLE ?TOYS? ON PUBLIC ROADS
A leading EU transport “expert” has questioned whether there is any place for motorcycles on Europe’s roads. In an official report from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), Norwegian Rune Elvik says: “In Norway, I believe all the most cost effective measures have been implemented – mandatory helmet use, strict licensing, engine tuning ban, daytime running lights for motorbikes. The question that needs to be raised now is whether there should be any place for these motorized toys in the transport system at all.”
On December 21, 2007 the Flemish Parliament in Belgium was presented with the ETSC report as a basis for legislation on motorcycle safety. However the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) Belgium, with the support of Members of Parliament, defended the riders’ position by using the Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations’ (FEMA), European Agenda for Motorcycle Safety, which highlights the importance of finding real solutions to improve the casualty rates for motorcyclists.
As a direct result of MAG Belgium’s action, the ETSC report was rejected and instead, MAG Belgium’s motorcycle-friendly program was adopted.
Motorcycle Action Group (MAG-UK) General Secretary, Trevor Baird, said, “Motorcycling is under constant threat from the European safety agenda. The introduction of this agenda has been thwarted in Belgium before it spreads further like a rash across Europe. MAG will continue to protect motorcycling and defend riders’ rights from whatever quarter the threat comes.”
MOTORCYCLE BAN ON PHILIPPINE ROADWAYS
Philippine lawmakers want motorcycles banned on main roads and highways, despite being the being the most common means of transportation in the island nation.
House Bill No. 3080 filed by Reps. Narciso D. Santiago III (Party-list, ARC) and Marcelino R. Teodoro (1st Dist., Marikina City, Lakas-CMD) seeks to prohibit motorcyclists from using major public thoroughfares.
According to Santiago, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that in many countries in Asia including the Philippines, deaths and injuries from motorcycle accidents are now considered a ?Public Health Epidemic.?
Dr. Soe Nyunt-U, WHO Representative to the Philippines also told a forum of the Department of Health on Road Safety that a helmet law would be the most effective way to reduce head injuries and fatalities from motorcycle and bicycle crashes. ?Road traffic crashes are the second leading cause of injury and death for all ages such that motorcyclists should wear helmets while on the road.?
Health Undersecretary for Health Operations Dr. Ethelyn Nieto supported the statementof Nyunt-U that helmet usage is vital to road safety. ?Road safety is a must with 3.5 million motorcycles in the country,? said Nieto. Records showed that motorcycles are now the third most registered vehicles next to cars at 66.3 percent.
SAFER CYCLING, REPORTS GOVERNMENT STUDY
According to the Compendium of Motorcycle Statistics, released by the UK Department of Transport in December 2007 ? an annual set of figures released by the British government – motorcycle traffic rose by 37% from 1996-2006 while the number of killed or seriously injured (KSI) accidents increased by just 8% (from 5,717 in 1996 to 6,151 in 2006).
The report also noted that speeding was only a minor cause of motorcycle crashes, repeating earlier findings showing that exceeding the speed limit is put down as a contributory factor ? and even then not necessarily as the main cause ? of just four percent of bike crashes where some blame is put on the rider.
The biggest factor is ?failure to look properly?, a contributory factor in 15 percent of motorcycle crashes, followed by ?loss of control? at 14 percent and ?failed to judge other persons path or speed? at 11 percent. ?Careless, reckless or in a hurry? also rates at 11 percent, but this doesn?t mean actually breaking the speed limit.
Despite UK Government figures showing as many as 25 percent of riders go more than 10mph over posted speed limits, ?Exceeding the speed limit? was jointly rated as the bottom contributory factor, alongside ?following too close?, also at four percent.
Other information in the report includes the fact that motorcycle riders are less likely than other road users to drink and drive, with just 1.5 percent of those tested failing breath tests, against an average of 1.9 percent for all road users.
INJURY REPORT SHOWS ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES NOT CHILD?S PLAY
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) pose a serious risk of injury and even death, according to the largest study ever conducted of ATV injuries in children. The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
“Our experience shows that children’s use of ATVs is dangerous and should be restricted,” said Chetan C. Shah, M.D., radiology fellow at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.
While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 16 be prohibited from operating ATVs, no laws are in place in most states. ATV accidents are seldom reported because the vehicles are unlicensed and typically operated off-road or on private land.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), ATV-related injuries in children under the age of 16 more than doubled from 1995 to 2005 with 40,400 children treated in hospital emergency rooms nationwide in 2005. This figure represents nearly one-third of all ATV-related injuries treated that year. Child fatalities resulting from ATV accidents have also nearly doubled since 1995 with 120 reported deaths in 2005.
ATV-associated injuries can be caused by crashes, rollovers, ejections or even disregard of simple safety precautions. But according to Dr. Shah, ATV use by children is intrinsically dangerous because of the instability of the vehicles and the small size of children. While reducing the size and power of the vehicles and wearing helmets and protective clothing might limit some of the injuries, there still remains the issue of whether children should be riding ATVs at all.
“The question is a little like asking, ‘How can we make motorcycle use safer for five-year-olds?'” Dr. Shah said. “The problem is that five-year-olds should not be using motorcycles under any circumstances.”
CALIFORNIA INSTALLS FIRST-EVER STOP SIGN CAMERAS
While red light and speed cameras are creeping into our traffic system, California has installed the first-ever automated camera in the U.S. designed to ticket drivers who make “boulevard stops” or slow to a crawl at a stop sign without fully ceasing forward motion. The little-known Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority has begun issuing $100 fines long Franklin Canyon in the heart of Los Angeles, located off of Mulholland Drive, and another at the top of Topanga.
The cameras are being installed as a prelude to the park agency’s expected installation of speed cameras on popular canyon roads, despite state law specifically prohibiting their use. In 2000, the California legislature banned photo radar (CVC 21455.6) and per-ticket photo enforcement contract provisions (CVC 21455.5), but the MRCA believes the law does not apply to them. ?Our Park Rangers are California peace officers and will always have traffic enforcement as part of their duty,” MRCA Director of Public Affairs Dash Stolarz said in a statement.
Australian camera vendor Redflex will operate every aspect of the program in return for a $20 cut from every ticket the company is able to issue.
The stop sign devices are based on red light camera platforms, but they differ greatly in use. The more familiar stoplight cameras typically photograph a vehicle entering an intersection if a signal light changes to red between 0.1 and 0.3 seconds after the car crosses a stop bar line. With the new stop sign cameras, a machine will make calculations to determine whether a vehicle did not stop for a long enough period and deserves a fine.
BIKER?S SON SNUBBED BY MILITARY
When Jessi Lenti was 8 years old, his father took him to Canada’s Wonderland where he dressed up like a little soldier and posed with a toy gun. “Dad, this is what I want to do,” his father, Frank Lenti, recalls him saying at the amusement park north of Toronto. Now 23, Jessi has been rejected from joining the Canadian military because of his father’s long-time association with outlaw biker clubs.
“I’m the criminal, so why punish him?” asked his 60-year-old father, formerly of the Bandidos, Loners, Outlaws, Rebels, Diablos and Satan’s Choice motorcycle clubs. Frank Lenti made his comments from the maximum-security wing of a Toronto-area jail.
Jessi’s application for the military was supported by strong references from teachers. He also has a black belt in karate — and no criminal record. “This is me,” he said in an interview with the Toronto Star newspaper. “I’m myself. I’m not my father. Judge me for who I am.”
He said he was shocked this summer when an officer in the Canadian Forces told him that he couldn’t enlist because the Canadian Security Intelligence Service had concluded he was affiliated with organized crime. York Regional police Chief Armand La Barge said his force has never considered the young Lenti to have a criminal profile. “To the best of our knowledge, he has never been a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang and to the best of our knowledge, he has never been a member of an organized crime group or entity either,” La Barge said.
Jessi, who has a black belt in karate — and no criminal record — is appealing his rejection to the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
Canadian military historian Jack Granatstein said he has never heard of a case in which the son of a motorcycle gang member has been denied membership in the military because of his family ties.
Frank Lenti had always tried to shield his son from his business; “I had a lot of fun but in the end you end up in a place like this,” he said Frank Lenti, gesturing at the cinder-block jail walls.
Ironically, Frank Lenti said he opposes the war in Afghanistan, and shudders at the thought of his son risking his life there, should he win his appeal and get into the military. “Why should we fight their war?” the senior Lenti asked.
Jessi said that he had planned since grade school to enter the military. “I’ve always wanted to do it, to serve my country. It was going to be a lifetime plan.”
WEIRD NEWS: VIETNAMESE BIKERS TERRORIZED BY ELEPHANTS
And you thought your local commute was bad? Three wild elephants that escaped from a wildlife preserve terrorized bikers in Vietnam, where motorcycles outnumber cars 9-1. The elephants crushed motorbikes in their path and stormed into residential houses.
In one reported attack, a biker transporting chickens had to abandon his motorcycle to escape, returning later to the carnage. “It was a frightening spectacle,” said Nguyen Van Phong. “The motorbike was a pile of scrap iron and 20 birds were completely crushed in their cages. Nothing could prevent these animals from doing that.”
Local authorities in Ha Tinh province said the wild elephants wandered out of Vu Quang national park during their mating season.
“We have not yet found out an effective preventative method,” said chairman Phan Duc Cung. “Killing the animals is not possible. People must be cautious of elephants, taking the initiative to avoid them.”
TOXIC TANNING
Imported leather products may be hazardous to your health, claims a December 29 report in the News Journal. With the reality of a global economy and different countries’ approaches to regulation, cowboys, bikers and other leather consumers need to be more aware of practices overseas and the journeys their exotic hides have made.
“Most of the leather that’s for motorcyclists is from Pakistan,” said Barney McCarthy, owner of Barney’s Leather on North Beach Street in Daytona Beach, Florida. In Pakistan, the leather is tanned with lead-based chromium, which can be an environmental concern. “Overseas in Pakistan or China, people are getting really sick; they just pour all the chemicals in the water and people drink it,” he said.
Tanning is the process that turns skin, which can decompose, into leather. It’s done using natural or chemical additives, or a combination of the two. Most American leather is tanned overseas, so even if a product says “Made in the USA,” that may just mean assembled here with leather treated elsewhere.
“The (Environmental Protection Agency) governs how we treat leather here, but not what comes in,” he said. “That’s why China can make toys with lead paint and they can come in here, but we could never make (the toys) like that.”
America produces “the best cowhide in the world,” but it’s generally sent overseas to tan because domestic tanneries couldn’t stay open — a few still work for shoe companies but that’s all he knows of, McCarthy said. “People buying boots from China, I’m wondering if it’s like putting on toxic shoes,” he said.
QUOTABLE QUOTE: “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.”

New Reviews of V-Twin Wines by Kens Wine Guide: Wine Review: This V-Twin Zin motored into second place in our recent blind tasting of Zinfandels. This purple wine opens with a mild cassis and cherry like bouquet. On the palate, this medium bodied wine is round, velvety, easy to drink and has pleasant jammy cherry flavors. I flew to Alaska to Salmon fish and bought all my gear, food and drinks at Walmart. As I boarded the plane, to fly home, it dawned on me what I just did to the Fairbanks community and local businesses. I screwed them. Did you know that 80 percent of all Walmart products in the U.S. are made in China? Then we received a report from Buzz Kantor about magazines being kicked off Walmart stands. So now they’re going to control what you read. Did you know that if Walmart was a country they’d have the 8th largest GNP in the world, ahead of Russia. It comes down to a couple of things. So many folks in business are driven to enhance profits at any cost, without thinking about our country, community, or fellow citizens. We need to think long range and once in a while do the right thing. Chris Callen, the Publisher of the new Cycle Source Magazine wrote Walmart about their practices and they responded with an offer to sell his magazine, which could enhance his circulation as much as 30 percent. He turned them down. He did it for us, for all Americans who struggle to make a living. Read his Walmart report in the Cycle Source and shortly on Bikernet.com Why can’t we start a chain of coffee shops that sport massive newsstands and carry a gang of magazines, newspapers and paper backs. I sent the article to every customer and friend I have who rides. As of January 15th 2008 there will not be a Rocky Mountain Custom Bike in Denver and our money will stay out as well. This idiot really has a thing about bikes, and what I can’t understand is how an individual has had the ability to have so much power and be so discriminating, and our city allows it. Plain and simple its discrimination and the ordnance isn’t practical or even realistic. What about the car shows, hotrod shows, the new speed little zipper cars with their beer can exhaust. What’s good for the goose is good for everyone else. Another beef I want to bring attention too is I have numerous customers who are police officers, who also ride, and not one of their bikes are close to being legal. They laugh and say they aren’t concerned with the new ordnance because their exempt. They stick together and won’t write one another a ticket. What the hell is that?!!! It just seems to me that we have lost our rights completely here, and it could be coming soon to a city near you. –Chuck Shortt The Colorado Confederation of Clubs has been on this case since last Summer. Many of us have appeared on the “BIKER NATION” radio show, done interviews, talked to DPD, etc. It has been written up extensively in many publications, and has been challenged and for the most part shut down by the COC Attorney. In fact, the first and only case I know of was thrown out by the judge. Take lessons from how we dealt with this SAME issue years ago in Colorado Springs. we did it intelligently, professionally and QUIETLY and we won! It?s all a matter of record. Now BAKER?s renowned aura of dependability can find its way to the motor. The new Plus-One Oil Pan offers to the serious touring rider another way to protect the engine by upgrading the oil pan to something that holds a full quart more. BAKER Drivetrain, bent on riding with peace-of-mind through dependability, developed a larger oil pan that is designed to ensure cooler oil back to the motor. COOLER The P1P keeps overall oil temperature oil cooler by designing more common sense into a simple container. First, it allows more oil to be stored in the system. The extra quart adds 20% more oil that the motor must try to warm up. Ultimately, it takes longer to get to peak temperature as well as keep the peak temperature lower. Next, the feed and return ports are on opposite ends of the pan as opposed to being next to each other. Thirdly, with the P1P the overheated oil is not only forced to dilute and cool as it travels from one end to the other, but the internal baffles on the P1P force it to also mix even further. Lastly, the cooling fins below the pan add additional surface area for the heat to disperse. BONUS! PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY STYLE IMS SHOWS STILL ON A ROLL–The Man asked that I touch basis with you. V-Twin is a player in the Zinfandel market place. This is the third Zin out of 3 we have tried in the last year that we have recommended. This dark ruby wine opens with a mild black current bouquet with a touch of wood and vanilla. On the palate, this medium bodied wine is smooth as silk, well balanced, quite tasty, and has a pleasant blend of black cherry and spice flavors. The finish is dry and nicely extended. The panel felt this wine would pair nicely with pork tenderloin with a brown sage sauce or squab. Enjoy – KWGTP

The 10? reduction (our conservative measurement) in engine operating temperature on an 80 degree day certainly helps ? especially if you?ve done anything to your bike to make it run warmer like motor hop-ups, blocking the motor?s air circulation, pulling extra weight, or sitting idle on hot asphalt in a crowded Southern summer bike rally in grid-locked traffic. Measurements by other parties found a 30? drop in temperature. Nonetheless, the P1P will compensate for your abuse.
Since we were down there, it wasn?t too difficult to include a mounting provision for the Alloy Art TXR FLT swing arm stabilizer that prevents a wobble that many FL riders feel in the turns. We never skip out on the opportunity to offer more performance so we simply added this little provision. The P1P omits the bolt on trans plate and stand-offs that the TXR mounts to by providing its own mounting boss.
The Plus-One Oil Pan is available in a cast form with either a polished, black powder coat or silver powder coat that is designed to match your H-D quite well. Also, BAKER knows the potential baggers have to be dressed-up nicely. We know that there are those who insist on the finest of finishes. That?s why we also offer a billet chrome version that is aesthetically perfect for those sticklers of good looks.
