THE BIKERNET QUESTION OF THE WEEK–Why do lawmakers concern themselves so much with healthcare costs relative to motorcycle accidents? Bikers are patriotic citizens, many of whom have insurance but because of things like denial of benefits for living a risky lifestyle, or fixed policy limits by insurance companies who charge high premiums but offer lousy coverage (reducing their risk exposure), biker’s are somehow blamed for the shortfalls.

I wonder how strongly Senator Carroll has spoken out about the cost to tax payers for health benefit gifts bestowed on illegal aliens. Or am I supposed to call them undocumented? I like the first description better. Hey Carroll, get your head out of your ass and look at what’s really costing us money.

Part of the blame is paying people like you to rule instead of serve. Want to save us some money? Retire and move to Mexico.

–Pan

You know it’s bullshit. Some citizen complains, then the legislator sees it as a feather in his or her, cap that won’t piss off all the voters, and they go for it. If they truly wanted to save money, there’s major fish to fry, like hospitals that kill 150,000 with infections annually, obesity that will cost billions this year and car accidents killing 44,000 this year. How about helmets for them?–Bandit

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN GUILTY– OF LOOKING AT OTHERS YOUR OWN AGE AND THINKING, SURELY I CAN’T LOOK THAT OLD. WELL, YOU’LL LOVE THIS ONE! MY NAME IS ALICE SMITH AND I WAS SITTING IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR MY FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A NEW DENTIST. I NOTICED HIS DDS DIPLOMA, WHICH BORE HIS FULL NAME. SUDDENLY, I REMEMBERED A TALL, HANDSOME, DARK-HAIRED BOY WITH THE SAME NAME HAD BEEN IN MY HIGH SCHOOL CLASS SOME 30-ODD YEARS AGO. COULD HE BE THE SAME GUY THAT I HAD A SECRET CRUSH ON, WAY BACK THEN? UPON SEEING HIM, HOWEVER, I QUICKLY DISCARDED ANY SUCH THOUGHT. THIS BALDING, GRAY-HAIRED MAN WITH THE DEEPLY LINED FACE WAS WAY TOO OLD TO HAVE BEEN MY CLASSMATE. AFTER HE EXAMINED MY TEETH, I ASKED HIM IF HE HAD ATTENDED MORGAN PARK HIGH SCHOOL.

“YES. YES, I DID. I’M A MUSTANG,” HE GLEAMED WITH PRIDE.
“WHEN DID YOU GRADUATE?” I ASKED.
HE ANSWERED, “IN 1973. WHY DO YOU ASK?”
“YOU WERE IN MY CLASS!”, I EXCLAIMED.
HE LOOKED AT ME CLOSELY.THEN, THAT UGLY,OLD,BALD,WRINKLED,FAT ASS,GRAY-HAIRED,DECREPITSON-OF-A-BITCH ASKED,
“WHAT DID YOU TEACH ???”

ROAD TALES BY THE MASTER OF MOTORCYCLE LITERATURE–Popular motojournalist Clement Salvadori has been sharing his stories from the road with the readers of Rider magazine since 1988. Now, 101 of those engaging Road Tales have been brought together in one book, cleverly illustrated by his long-time friend Gary Brown.

These tales are spun by an observant and experienced traveler who can make a quick ride on the back roads near his home just as entertaining as a trip across the country.

Meet some of the characters he has encountered (you might be among them), laugh with him at some of his blunders, and join him for bread, cheese, wine, and a stupendous vista somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of humanity.

V-Twin Exclusive — Combating Counterfeits and Knock-Offs in the Motorcycle World
Sunday, February 3rd ~ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Room 234 Duke Energy Center

Some call imitation the highest form of flattery. Others call it counterfeiting. Custom builders and parts designers are feeling the impact of infringement and knock-offs both from domestic and foreign producers. This seminar explores some of the means of protecting novel designs and inventions and some of the remedies that are available when someone else imitates a product without proper permission.

The V-Twin Expo will welcome over 500 exhibitors in 2008 and thousands of v-twin dealers in Cincinnati at the Duke Energy Center. The V-Twin Expo remains the one show to attend for v-twin dealers. “I attend the v-twin expo every year, it is the single most informative event there is. It gives me and my staff personal time with the people we deal with every day over the phone. It’s nice to put a face with a name; also it gives my store the competitive edge it needs” said Duane Easter of Cycle City in Tennessee.

CUSTOM DESIGN STUDIO DRIVE SIDE CALIPER BRACKET COVER– Anybody who has a drive side caliper bracket that is welded to the frame knows what these are for. The weld on tabs look great molded and painted to match the bike’s paint job.

The problem is when you tighten the bolts down to their torque specifications, the paint blisters up and looks unprofessional. With these covers designed by Kirk Taylor you just put a couple of dabs of clear silicone on the backside of the cover and you’re done.

They are raw aluminum so you can paint, polish or plate to your needs. To remove, just poke your screwdriver from the backside and they’ll pop out with little effort.

MSRP $40/pair.

Mist-Free 1

MYSTFREE FROM DOHERTY–Finally a no nonsense cure for the dreaded Twin Cam oil mist dilemma. Tim Doherty, CEO of Doherty Machine, has just announced the release of what is certainly one of the most significant new products developed for the TwinCam 88 since its introduction in 1999.

According to Doherty the single largest complaint of TC owners is the oil mist released through the engine breather system that ultimately ends up coating the side of the bike, rider and passenger. Until now, there have been a number of what amount to “band aid” patches for the problem but none have produced notable permanent results.

In stark contrast to these temporary patch techniques, Doherty’s new MYSTFREE air/oil separation module eliminates the oil mist problem permanently! Both in house and independent tests have shown that the MYSTFREE unit eliminated 99% of the oil residue emitted from TwimCam machines in good mechanical condition.

Tested in engines ranging from the stock 88 up to 154 ci, Doherty’s unique device controlled virtually all misting normally associated with a build up in crank case pressure and inadequate oil pump scavenging. A direct bolt in replacement for the factory module, MYSTFREE can be installed in about an hour with no additional modifications.

There are currently a number of patents pending on MYSTFREE which retails for $229.95. For complete details call 928-541-7744 or visit www.dohertymachine.com

Viet Nam Memorial Bike–I thought you guys might like a little more insight into Zien’s accomplishments. Attached is a letter I sent out to some ABATE chapters around the country, hoping for some commendations for Dave from them.

I have some photos of the bike we left at the Viet Nam Memorial in Washington, D.C., but I want to get a storyline for you from one of the builders. Basically, it was a Viet Nam era styled chopper which several members of ABATE of Wisconsin built as a project. All parts, including frame and motor were donated. The paint was done by a Viet Nam vet friend of mine, and it’s beautiful in detail. The seat was hand stitched, and nobody has ever sat on this bike. Hanging from the steering head are dog tags representing the 39 Wisconsin MIA’s from Viet Nam.

zein tank art

There’s a whole lot more about this bike, but I want to get it firsthand from one of the builders. This was the largest item ever left at the Wall in Washington, D.C. Afterwards, it was warehoused in the Smithsonian Institute, which upset many of us because this bike needs to be seen. With the help of Zien, the bike was transferred to the National Parks Service, and went on tour of the USA at major bike events, including a special ceremony at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. That’s why Pam West is coming from Virginia to Dave’s banquet. She’s who we worked with to get the bike out to South Dakota.

It stopped in Milwaukee for a week display at our War Memorial Museum on the lakefront. After a ceremony there, we saddled up and did an Iron Butt to Sturgis to be at the ceremony at the Sturgis Museum. Tommy Thompson flew in as well as several legislators from Wisconsin. I rode with Dave, Mark Bugher, Wisconsin Dept. of Administration, and three vets, including one of the team that worked on the bike. I’ll get you some better photos and a story as soon as possible. This bike is a must see for any Viet Nam Vet,

NEW CANTINA MEMBER REPORTS ON ACCIDENT–I’ve been following Bikernet so long I finally joined the Cantina. Glad I did! The drawing below was doneimmediately after I passed the “incident” and got home. The poor dudeon the dresser had just been rear ended at a downhill stoplight here indeadly Vancouver. I don’t know if he was hurt but he did have thepresense of mind to crawl back to the offending van and drape himselfover the front tire so the prick wouldn’t try to drive off before the lawarrived.

He was on his phone calling for help when I passed and it wasthen that I noticed the dog sitting in his lap. He was scared and shakingbut seemed OK, thank god. I don’t get people riding with their animalstucked into their jackets but then again the older I get…..

Thanks for writing. I’m trying to finish off an Ariel ’40 sidevalve that’sbeen in my basement way too long. Don’t know if you are goin this way for power (200 MPH Club). If you are, is to be “carbinated” or “Infected”??? Multiple stages might be a real good idea. Forget about “Dry Nitrous”.

Daytona Twin Tec has good EFI systems. V-Thunder has a simple module for a carbinated system with Nitrous.

One thing I saw on the bike was that front shot with Val on it. Fuck man, adios those handle bars!! Get something goin low and close to the fork tubes. A girder made from aircraft tubing would be real bitchin.

THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEK–But it’s never the full extent of the news. I could produce one of these each day, shit is happening so fast. Kim Hotinger is helping me with wheels for the Assalt Weapan. We’re running All American Wheel blanks, which will be cut, machined and ready to rock by Renegade Wheels of Orange. The rear 17 will be a plain flat aluminum wheel, but the front wheel must have 30 percent of the 18-inch wheel space open and Renegade wheel team is sponsoring the machining and making of the hubs. We will run 1-inch axles and no front brakes.

STREETWALKER BANNER

In the near future we will feature an install of Streetwalked Exhaust by Envy Cycle. Hell, we’ll start a complete motorcycle build by Lucky Devil Metal Works for the staff Queen, Nyla. It will be a bobber of supreme, little woman, characteristics. You’ll see it built from the Kraft Tech frame up.

Many of us are headed to the Easyriders Show in Pomona this Saturday and Sunday. Me and a truck load of brothers and hauling the Salt Shaker and the Amazing Shrunken FXR to the Pomona Fairplex tomorrow for set-up. HELLS ANGELS RALLY TOPS CODY NEWS FOR 2006– There were months of trepidation before the Hells Angels came to Cody. The biker rally was the No. 1 story in Cody in 2006.But for many locals it was law enforcement, not the notorious outlaw biker gang, which caused the most consternation during the club’s World Run July 26-30.

Just prior to and during the first couple of days of the event, there were numerous complaints about officers – especially state troopers – being over-zealous with traffic stops.Local people and families reported being pulled over numerous times or for such things as having broken license plate lights.

Police quickly cut back the number of visible officers, and the rally went on without any major incidents. And estimated 1,300 Hells Angels – likely the largest gathering on record – attended the event.Police in a post-rally press conference said there was good reason for the heightened security and traffic stops.Had there not been such a major police presence and strict enforcement, there could have been real trouble, police spokesmen said.

DEATHS DOWN IN PORTSMOUTH–PORTSMOUTH — The number of fatal motor vehicle crashes in the state dropped from 161 last year to 122 in 2006, which Division of Motor Vehicles Director Virginia Beecher credits to increased police presence and department initiatives.

In addition to the decrease in total deaths, the number of motorcycle operators killed in 2006 dropped by more than half. There were 17 deaths in 2006, 39 in 2005 and 25 in 2004.

Beecher said she thinks law enforcement officials are more visible on the state highways and local streets, which deters dangerous driving.”I think the main contributing factors of motor vehicle deaths are speed and alcohol, and as result of more visibility, people slow down,” she said. “One (death) is too many, but I’m pleased by the numbers.”

The issue of motorcycle safety in the state was brought to the forefront in 2004 when the total number of deaths jumped to 25 from 9 in 2003. After an even worse year in 2005, Beecher said she is happy to see the start of what she hopes is a downward trend.

Initiatives include a law passed last year that prevents a rider from receiving a 30-day driving permit after repeatedly failing the state test. The law requires anyone who failed the test twice to participate in a motorcycle training program.Education initiatives for both riders and new drivers have also likely helped lower the number of deaths, according to Beecher. One law that hasn’t passed, which Beecher wishes would, is one mandating helmets for riders.

BIKERNET MOTORCYCLE SAFETY STUDY FINDINGS-10 WAYS–1.) Assume Drivers Can’t See You: Ride assuming that you and your motorcycleare totally invisible to motorists. That means you must never assume thatdrivers can see you. The odds are, they can’t so believe it yourself andalways have an “out” for dangerous traffic situations. Motorcycle Safetydepends on you.

2.) Maintain Safe Spacing: Leave plenty of space in front and back and tothe sides from all other vehicles. Be an island. Stay away from traffic asmuch as possible. This gives you more visibility and more time to react tosituations.

3.) Anticipate Trouble: Anticipate trouble situations and know what to dowhen you see them. Analyze what vehicles are doing and try to predict theoutcome. Then make sure you’re ready to avoid a bad traffic situation.

4.) Beware of Oncoming Left Turners: Beware of oncoming motorists turningleft in front of you at intersections. This is the leading cause of death ofmotorcycle riders. I’m deadly serious here. I have personally lost manyfriends to this accident. If you only remember one tip here, let it be thisone. Slow down before you enter an intersection. Have an escape routeplanned. Stay visible. Don’t travel too close to cars in front of you.Position your bike so it can be seen by the left turner. Eye contact is notenough.

5.) Ride Your Own Ride: Don’t try to keep up with your friends who may bemore experienced. Know your personal limits. Ride your own ride.

6.) Watch Out for Curves: Beware of taking curves that you can’t see around.A parked truck or a patch of sand may be awaiting you.

7.) Don’t Give In to Road Rage: Do not give in to road rage and try to “geteven” with another rider or motorist. If you follow these tips, most likelyyou won’t fall victim to road rage. It’s better to calm down, slow down, andcollect your thoughts first. Then continue on and enjoy the ride. That’swhat we’re all out there for in the first place.

8.) Don’t allow Tailgating: If someone is tailgating you, either speed up toopen more space or pull over and let them pass. Life is too short. Rememberthat a bike can stop faster than a car so you don’t want a truck on yourtail when you find yourself trying to brake to avoid an accident. Also, don’t tailgate the vehicle in front of you. Oncoming drivers can’t see you.

9.) Don’t Be Blinded by Sunglare: Beware of riding your motorcycle into sunglare. All it takes is turning a corner and finding the sun either directlyin your face or passing straight through your windshield. Some helmets haveshields to block the sun. Face shields help somewhat. But sometimes you justfind yourself blinded by the light. Slow down, pull over, shield your eyesand look for a way to change direction.

10.) Avoid Riding at Night: Avoid riding at night, especially late Saturdaynight and early Sunday when drunken drivers may be on the road. It goeswithout saying that you shouldn’t drink and ride. Going bar hopping? Leavethe bike at home and find a designated driver.

What Am I Trying To Say About Motorcycle Safety? The best way to be safe is to take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF)course to learn the basic ways to control your motorcycle and to learn howto recognize traffic situations that you need to be ready to handle.

Maintain your bike so it is safe too. Keep records of the intervals when youreplace tires, chains, clutch cables, batteries, brakes, etc. You don’t wantan equipment malfunction to contribute to a motorcycle accident.

Practice riding under all kinds of traffic situations. Ride with a buddy ifat all possible. Avoid riding long distances alone.

Become a member of any of our Motorcycles forums and read what otherexperienced riders have to say about how to ride safely.

I want you to become an aged motorcyclist because you know how to survive ona motorcycle. I don’t want to read about you in the newspaper or on amotorcycle forum or mailing list as yet another motorcycle statistic. Learnhow to be safe and responsible on a motorcycle. That’s why this Web site andforums exist and that’s why I’m writing these tips. The rest is up to you.

SEX AND MOTORCYCLES, THEY WORK–The best that modern science can say for abstinence is that it’s harmless when practiced in moderation. “Saving yourself” before the big game, the big business deal, the big hoedown or the big bakeoff may indeed confer some moral advantage; but physiologically it does zip.

Having regular and enthusiastic sex, by contrast, confers a host of measurable physiological advantages, be you male or female. (This assumes that you are engaging in sex without contracting a sexually transmitted disease.)

In one of the most credible studies correlating overall health with sexual frequency, Queens University in Belfast tracked the mortality of about 1,000 middle-aged men over the course of a decade. The study was designed to compare people of similar age and health. Its findings, published in 1997 in the British Medical Journal, were that men who reported the highest frequency of orgasm enjoyed a death rate half that of the laggards. Other studies (some rigorous, some less so) purport to show that having sex even a few times a week has an associative or causal relationship with the following:

— Improved sense of smell: After sex, production of the hormone prolactin surges. This, in turn, causes stem cells in the brain to develop new neurons in the brain’s olfactory bulb, its smell center.

— Reduced risk of heart disease: In a 2001 follow-up to the Queens University study mentioned above, researchers focused on cardiovascular health. Their finding? That by having sex three or more times a week, men reduced their risk of heart attack or stroke by half.

— Weight loss, overall fitness: Sex, if nothing else, is exercise. A vigorous bout burns some 200 calories–about the same as running 15 minutes on a treadmill or playing a spirited game of squash. The pulse rate, in a person aroused, rises from about 70 beats per minute to 150, the same as that of an athlete putting forth maximum effort. British researchers have determined that the equivalent of six Big Macs can be worked off by having sex three times a week for a year. Muscular contractions during intercourse work the pelvis, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck and thorax. Sex also boosts production of testosterone, which leads to stronger bones and muscles. Men’s Health magazine has gone so far as to call the bed the single greatest piece of exercise equipment ever invented.

— Reduced depression: A study of 293 women in 2002 had the same implications. American psychologist Gordon Gallup reported that sexually active participants whose male partners did not use condoms were less subject to depression than those whose partners did. One theory of causality: Prostoglandin, a hormone found only in semen, may be absorbed in the female genital tract, thus modulating female hormones.

— Pain relief: Immediately before orgasm, levels of the hormone oxytocin surge to five times their normal level. This, in turn, releases endorphins, which alleviate the pain of everything from headaches to arthritis to even migraines. In women, sex also prompts production of estrogen, which can reduce the pain of PMS.

— Less frequent colds and flu: Wilkes University in Pennsylvania says individuals who have sex once or twice a week show 30% higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, which is known to boost the immune system.

— Better bladder control: Heard of Kegel exercises? You do them, whether you know it or not, every time you stem your flow of urine. The same set of muscles is worked during sex.

— Better teeth: Seminal plasma contains zinc, calcium and other minerals shown to hinder tooth decay. Since this is a family web site, we will omit discussion of the mineral delivery system. Suffice it to say that it could be a far richer, more complex and more satisfying experience than squeezing a tube of Crest–even Tartar Control Crest. Researchers have noted, parenthetically, that sexual etiquette usually demands the brushing of one’s teeth before and/or after intimacy, which, by itself, would help promote better oral hygiene.

— A happier prostate? Some urologists believe they see a relationship between infrequency of ejaculation and cancer of the prostate. The causal argument goes like this: To produce seminal fluid, the prostate and the seminal vesicles take such substances from the blood as zinc, citric acid and potassium, and then concentrate them up to 600 times. Any carcinogens present in the blood likewise would be concentrated. Rather than have concentrated carcinogens hanging around causing trouble, it’s better to evict them. A study published by the British Journal of Urology International asserts that men in their 20s can reduce, by a third, their chance of getting prostate cancer by ejaculating more than five times a week.

While possession of a robust appetite for sex–and the physical ability to gratify it–may not always be the cynosure of perfect health, a reluctance to engage can be a sign that something is seriously on the fritz, especially where the culprit is an infirm erection.

Dr. J. Francois Eid, a urologist with Weill Medical College of Cornell University and New York Presbyterian Hospital, observes that erectile dysfunction is an extension of the vascular system. A lethargic member may be telling you that you have diseased blood vessels elsewhere in your body. “It could be a first sign of hypertension or diabetes or increased cholesterol levels. It’s a red flag that you should see your doctor.” Treatment and exercise, says Dr. Eid, can have things looking up again: “Men who exercise and have a good heart and low heart rate, and who are cardio-fit, have firmer erections. There very definitely is a relationship.”

But is there such a thing as too much sex?

The answer, in purely physiological terms, is this: If you’re female, probably not. If you’re male? You betcha.

Dr. Claire Bailey of the University of Bristol says there is little or no risk of a woman overdosing on sex. In fact, she says, regular sessions can not only firm a woman’s tummy and buttocks but also improve her posture.

As for men, urologist Eid says it’s definitely possible to get too much of a good thing, now that drugs such as Viagra and Levitra have given men far more staying power than what may actually be good for them.

SNITCHES RULED ILLEGAL IN QUEBEC–QUEBEC — The Quebec government’s use of violent-criminals-turned-informants to prosecute biker-gang members was ruled illegal yesterday, possibly opening up dozens of convictions for appeal.

The ruling by Mr. Justice Fraser Martin of the Quebec Superior Court could be used by convicted biker-gang members to appeal their convictions, said Jacques Normandeau, a Montreal criminal lawyer.

“The government does not have a right to use tricks or to cheat in order to get convictions,” Mr. Normandeau said yesterday.

BIKERNET SCOTTISH SCIENTESTS ON THE JOB–After having dug to a depth of 100 meters last year, Scottish scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 1000 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 1000 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the Scots, in the weeks that followed, English scientist dug to a depth of 200 meters and shortly after headlines in the UK newspapers read:

“English archaeologists have found traces of 2000 year-old copper wire and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a thousand years earlier than the Scots.”

One week later, Texas newspapers reported the following:

“After digging as deep as 500 meters in West Texas , scientists have found absolutely nothing. They have therefore concluded that 5000 years ago Texas inhabitants were already using wireless technology.”

POLICE OFFICER DOWNED–As reported earlier this week, some dirtbag who got pulled over in a routine traffic stop in Florida ended up “executing” the deputy who stopped him. The deputy was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at close range. Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed.

A statewide manhunt ensued. The low-life piece of human garbage was found hiding in a wooded area with his gun. SWAT team officers fired and hit said low-life 68 times.

Now here’s the kicker: Asked why they shot the guy 68 times, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel…get this.

“That’s all the bullets we had.”

NO EMISSIONS TESTS FOR MOTORCYCLES IN PIMA, ARIZONA–Owners of more than 6,200 motorcycles in Pima County will soon nolonger have to worry about whether their vehicles can pass the state’semissions tests. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency agreed on Friday thatexempting the motorcycles from the testing will not harm air qualityin the region. But the change, which becomes effective in about a month, helps morethan those who enjoy bugs in their teeth: The EPA said those who drive”collectible vehicles” also can skip the testing. That affects another1,400 vehicles.

But the federal agency said computer modeling done by the stateDepartment of Environmental Quality found that exempting all oldervehicles was not acceptable, at least not from a pollutionstandpoint.Motorists in Maricopa County are not quite so lucky: The EPA orderexempts only collectible vehicles; motorcyclists still will have to gothrough the testing.

Both areas of the state have had testing programs for years to complywith federal air-quality rules, particularly as they relate to carbonmonoxide and ozone pollution.State legislators voted for the exemptions in 2005. But the law wascontingent on getting the required approval from the EPA the orderthat came Friday. The legislation defines a collectible vehicle as one that is at least15 years old or “is of unique or rare design, of limited productionand an object of curiosity.”But to qualify for the emissions exemption, the vehicle cannot be forday-to-day use. Instead it must be maintained primarily for use incar-club activities, exhibitions or parades, or is part of a privatecollection “and is used only infrequently for other purposes.”And to ensure that, the law also says the vehicle must be classifiedby insurance companies as collectible or classic, a designation thatDEQ publicist Cortland Coleman said means it can be driven only alimited number of miles each year.

The DEQ actually had looked at a broader exemption, studying theeffect of exempting all vehicles at least 25 years old. But Colemansaid agency scientists concluded that would add too much pollution tothe air and endanger Pima County’s status as being in compliance withfederal laws. There already is an exemption for the oldest cars and trucks, thosemanufactured before 1967.

PELOSI TARGETS GRASSROOTS FREEDOM OF SPEECH– House Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) has pledged to take up alobbying reform proposal that would impose new regulations on speechby grassroots organizations, while providing a loophole in the rulesfor large corporations and labor unions. The legislation would makechanges to the legal definition of grassroots lobbying and requireany organization that encourages 500 or more members of the generalpublic to contact their elected representatives to file a report withdetailed information about their organization to the government on aquarterly basis. The report would include identifying theorganization’s expenditures, the issues focused on and the members ofCongress and other federal officials who are the subject of theadvocacy efforts. A separate report would be required for each policyissue the group is active on. “Right now, grassroots groups don’thave to report at all if they are communicating with the public,” saidDick Dingman of the Free Speech Coalition, Inc. “This is an effortthat would become a major attack on the 1st Amendment.”

NOISE SIGNS WON’T TARGET MOTORCYCLISTS–CAREFREE – The town’s controversial new noise-enforcement signs nolonger will target motorcycle riders.

Carefree’s street crew began removing motorcycle figures Wednesdayfrom a dozen signs that threatened riders with fines of up to $750 ifthey violate the town’s 85-decibel limit.

The signs went up Nov. 27 as part of a new program to reducemotorcycle noise in town. Riders must go through Carefree to get tobiker bars in Cave Creek.

Carefree had asked Cave Creek officials to also post the signs, butCave Creek Town Manager Usama Abujbarah refused, calling the signs”discriminatory.”

Scottsdale attorney and recreational biker Craig Simon agreed andhinted that Carefree was setting itself up for a lawsuit.”I guess I was right, for a change,” Abujbarah said.

Carefree Mayor Ed Morgan said he asked for the removal of themotorcycle symbol.

“We don’t want to upset people,” Morgan said. “We want cooperation. Ifthat little motorcycle emblem was making people hostile, then we feltit was best to remove it.”

Matt Dingman, who along with Councilman Lloyd Meyer heads up thetown’s Noise Enforcement Advisory Committee, said the icons wereremoved to keep the campaign “focused on voluntary noise reduction.”

BIKERS HONOR FREEDOM FIGHTER AND DEMONSTRATE HOPE FOR CALIFORNIA FUTURE– The ‘Quigmas Party’ was well attended and lacked nothing in the way ofPromise and Hope for the future of motorcycling. Over a hundred bikersattended the party, in Santa Cruz County, in honor of Richard Quigley. The gathering took place Friday night, December 29th 2006 at the SeaCliff Inn in Aptos, California.

Co-hosted by Lyle Fleming, President of the Ghost Mountain RidersM/C, and Red Barron, Bikers Of Lesser Tolerance (BOLT). Friends, family and motorcycle club members were there to Roast Quig and wishhim a happy Birthday, which actually falls on the 25th. Well-wisherscame from all over the state of California and from out of state.

Motorcycle Rights Organizations were represented; BOLT, in additionto American Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) immortalizedQuig and each awarded him high honors. Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo ofWisconsin, National Founder of BOLT honored him with their FreedomFighter Award which was presented by Red Barron, and Joe Schwirian,Chairman of the Board of ABATE of California, honored him with theirLifetime Achievement Award.

Jackie Suthers, State Director for BOLT of Nevada, spoke during the Roast and personal story portion of the party. Her inspiring recount of how she started work in Motorcycle Rights, and how she met Quig were important for the crowd to hear, but more telling was Richard?s insistence that the true inspiration was the people around him, like Jackie, who have accomplished so much with knowledge, courage and the guts to never back down. Jackie restated the BOLT motto, “Compromise is not in our vocabulary.” Kate Wells, Quig’s lawyer and friend for many years was inattendance. Also, Wendy Lascher, the lawyer representing Quig and theother co-plaintiffs in the Civil suit against the CHP came to the Quigmas party.

The participants suing the CHP in the Civil case are Quig, Don Blanscet,Pat Holmes, Red Barron, Steve Bianco; Steve was the only co-plaintiffunable to attend the party. The Civil law suit, filed November 9,2006, will prevent police from enforcing the California motorcyclehelmet law.

There was a run, in the Albany New York area, the Sacandaga HOG Group Ride the Saturday after Thanksgiving in which a fellow biker, Rich Weigal went down. I personally do not know all the details of this accident, but family and friends are asking for help. Also, from what I have been told, Rich was a very experienced rider, 20 + years.

If you or someone you know owns a 2006 HD Softail Deluxe and have had any problems with it bottoming out and / or making sparks on corners or tight turns, please contact us at Gypsypashn@bikerbits.info or GypseRse@bikerbits.info or John Adams @ oldfartbiker@netzero.net.

They are trying to collect as much information as possible along with their names so that an investigator may contact them and perhaps view their motorcycles to take pictures of the scratches underneath. This is very important to the ongoing investigation.

The State police are looking more closely at the motorcycle itself and “Chainsaw” is now involved as an (Unpaid) volunteer, independent investigator.

“Chainsaw” is a motorcycle accident investigator for a firm out of Manhattan, New York, for some years now and is rather concerned that this may be an inherent problem with this model of motorcycle.

Any help you can provide in this matter will be greatly appreciated by the family and friends of Rich Weigal.

Please forward this email to anyone and everyone that rides, especially those that ride a 2006 Softail Deluxe.

Thanking you in advance for your help.

READERS SHOWCASE RED SOFTAIL– This bike came from johnsguns@frontiernet.net and it’s clean. He asked if it could be featured on Bikernet. “What do I have to do to get a few pix of my skoot on Bikernet?” He said. “I know this one isn’t the best, but say the word, and I’ll ride up to the hat creek SRA and take some with the creek, etc in the background.”

I’m still wondering what etc. is? We have a section for Readers’ Rides of sorts. Any reader can post his or her own bike feature in Readers’ Showcase department. Then JoAnn Bortles or CrazyHorse will take it from there. WEIRD SHIT FROM 2006-NOTHING LIKE THIS WILL EVER HAPPEN IN 2007–BERLIN (Reuters) – From the Turkish Airline workers who sacrificed a camel at Istanbul airport to celebrate a job well done to the German who invented snug spray-on condoms, the world was full of offbeat news in 2006. So how do we get the spray-on condoms off…peel??? Ouch!

While “Miss Israel” Yael Nezri was exempted from carrying her assault rifle in the Israeli army because it bruised her beauty queen legs, (she’s supposed to carry her weapons on her shoulders, duh!)

“Mr. Switzerland” Renzo Blumenthal lured lonely women who hate soccer to his country for the World Cup. I want to know his secret!

Careless thieves once again made headlines round the world. A burglar in Germany left behind a vital clue — his finger tip. “We usually find finger prints but it’s not every day that the thieves leave the original there too,” a police spokesman said. It took only a few hours to track down the thief. self explanatory.

A Jordanian salesman was arrested for trying to fleece a money exchanger with a fake ID card bearing a Brad Pitt picture. An Osama Bin Laden ID might have worked.

In Vienna, burglars fled after finding eight severed human heads. A dentist had stored the mummified heads for research. Failed root canals??

Village leaders in India ordered 150 men to dip their hands in boiling oil to prove their innocence after food was stolen. Imagine what they would have had to dip to prove their innocence if they were looking for a rapist.

An Australian man stopped for drunk driving threatened police with a live snake he picked up off the road. look again guys, it wasn’t a snake.

In Cologne, a plastic surgeon cheated out of payment by two women using fake names gave “Wanted” pictures of their enlarged breasts to police. “It’s probably the most unusual ‘wanted’ poster police ever had,” wrote top-selling Bild newspaper, which helpfully published life-size pictures of the boosted breasts. Hmmm, does he do the same when not paid for penis enhancements?

There were tragic moments too. In Hanoi, a Vietnamese man famous on a national TV program for his ability to resist electric shocks was electrocuted while fixing a generator. it was a matter of time

In Rio de Janeiro, a Brazilian man died when he tried to open a rocket-propelled grenade with a sledgehammer. Therefore passing his final test for the Brazilian bomb squad.

The Master Finch

RONFINCH STANDING WITH BIKE
Here's a shot of the bagger mentioned in the article. You'll run across another shot of it below.

Below is mostly the words from an article written by Wilburn Roach for American Rider on Ron Finch's first dresser project. You'll enjoy it and it covers much of what Ron is up to. He's a classic cycle artist.–Bandit

It was my first Bagger,” Ron admitted as if he was confessing to an affair. He's a noted high-priest chopper builder. Baggers denote the anti-Christ to a life-long chopper rider.

“I can't use custom manufactured frames,” Ron said, sparks dancing off the concrete deck around his feet. “I never know where the gas tank will end up.” He barked in a gravely voice referring to his latest rolling metal-art-sculpture coupled to a strong handmade chrome moly frame. “The frame is light,” Ron said, “I could run smaller O.D. tubing and no-one builds a pure swingarm frame anymore. They're all goddamn Softails.”

RONFINCH NORMAL LOOKING RED

“We hard mounted the bags,” Ron said, “but they leaked so we tested rubber mounting.” The front third of the handmade aluminum bags contain fuel. They hold 4 gallons total which will power the light frame and 120-inch Keck motor for over 100 miles. “That's enough for me. I'm ready for a beer stop,” he added.

Ron rode this Keck driven twisted sculpture to Milwaukee from Pontiac, Michigan and to Myrtle Beach 1,200 miles from home. Ron's twisted steel for over 38 years and continues to rock the custom industry with one-of-a-kind creations. In 1965, he created Finch's Custom Styled Cycles, in Pontiac. In 1972, with an expanding clientele, Ron and his wife Ruth, moved to Auburn Hills, Michigan. With a dedicated crew, an artistic eye, genius for sculpting rod and wild painting techniques, he's still behind the torch. “I tig weld,” Ron said describing his welding choice. “I usually have a helper to hold pieces together and prefer team work.

It takes three of us to bend, mark, cut and weld. I tack most of my material and have someone back-up my welding. It don't trust myself.

Hell, I would prefer to braze everything.”

RONFINCH CHECKERED BIKE

I asked him for the notion behind this concept and he coughed, “I always have a design in my mind,” Ron said, “but I never draw anything. I just go for it.” He made the handlebars by hand, the headlight out of cut 2-inch tubing chunks, and modified the Milwaukee Iron fenders. “We widened the rear fender and cut slots in the front which I framed in 3/16-inch tubing.” He built the battery box out of a threshold door vent. “The first battery would barely turn over that big engine,” Ron said, “I finally scored an Odyssey and installed compression releases. My partners hated push-starting me. As soon as the Keck fired it blasted away leaving them lying in the street.”

RONFINCH BLUE BIKE LEFT PRO

He recently sold his shop of 25 years to Home Depot, gathered up all his tools and metal art and moved it into the building behind his house. “We shut the retail shop down,” Ron said, “I build bikes, paint and get to ride more.” He also actively builds metal art sculptures and appliances for whoever wants his artistic touch in their home or office. METALife is the company title. Building everything from plants, animals, gates, bed frames, furniture, fences, even railings, a bridge and a deck, Ron is using his mastery of metal-working toward art. “I'm designing racks and art in a couple of doctor's offices right now,” Ron said. “They're nuts, but if they like my shit, they'll get it.”

When he told me this was the last bike he built for himself, it begged the question, “You're last bike?”

“No goddamnit,” Ron snapped, “Of course not. It took me a while to move my shop, but I'll start another project before long. I'm still building several bikes for customers. Now get off my back.”

RONFINCH PURPLE BIKE RIGHT

I hung up the phone, took another look at this acid trip metallic concoction on wheels and sought solace in the garage behind dark welding glasses, the spark of a surreal torch flame and a cold beer. Inspired to build another ashtray with a burnt piston and an old cam shaft, I snapped the spark lighter. If you want to reach Master Finch, don't grab the phone. He won't answer it. Try his web site: finchscustoms.com.

RONFINCH CRAZY BIKE RIGHT

Just recently Ron competed with Jesse Rooke in a Biker Build-off. “The ride was incredible until we hit the Delaware Bridge,” Ron told me. “My rear wheel bearings blew out.” Original productions was paying $5,000 an hour for helicopter footage and they needed a set of bearings quick. It wasn't the wheel manufacture's fault. As they assembled the bike in record time for the Build-Off competition Ron hammered the rear axle in place only to jar a bearing race out of wack.

RONFINCH RED BIKE RIGHT PROFILE

They contacted Hallcraft for new bearings and were informed that any standard bearing would work. That wasn't the case and the bearing shop wasn't able to replace the set, so they contacted the nearest custom shop, two hours away. “No Problem,” was the response, but when they arrived the parts weren't available.

“But a customer, with the same wheel, came to my rescue,” Ron explained and they were on the road again to the show where Ron and Jesse competed for top honors. Can't tell you what the results are until the show airs.

Rumor has it that he scheduled for another Build-Off in the near future. Hang on.

THE CONCEPT OF FREEDOM AT RISK IN A WORLD OF SAFETY AND FINANCIAL RISK–“Public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment nothing can fail; without it, nothing can succeed. Consequently, he who molds publicsentiment goes deeper than he who enacts statutes or pronounces decisions. He makes statutes or decisions possible or impossible to be executed.”

–Abraham Lincoln, 1858

This quote was found while researching the power of those forces involved in mandating helmet laws. It’s an article about how think tanks are being used in order to come up with campaigns to sway public opinion. (The keywords search used was corporatism thinktank fear public). There is a section which discusses strategies used by NC to make its’ seat belt campaign a model for other states. These same people who have used their resources to increase seat belt use, with the Click It or Ticket campaign, are the same people who have been blitzing the media in order to sway public opinion regarding helmets. There should be no doubt that highways safety programs in many other states will be looking to follow examples of the NC GHSP in North Carolina if we are unable to turn the tide in 2008.

http://www.mediaeva luationproject. org/MobilizingWi ll.pdf

I recommend taking some time to read it through, because it shows what those who oppose mandatory helmet laws are up against. It may also include some skills we can get good at.

Among other things, it asks, and attempts to answer the question:Why are some social problems defined in terms of “poor behavioral choices” of individuals while other problems are blamed on the unhealthy business practices of companies that manufacture harmful products or the governmental agencies that regulate them?

In NC, our media is very reluctant to print our news releases, or to air our side of the helmet issues, but they jump on a release by the NC DOT in a flash, even when it contains misinformation. We are going to have to contend with this in 2008 by preparing media statements and press releases, and discredit theirs. “Honest Abe” is correct. It is not just the legislative building where we lose our rights, as evidenced by the NC GHSP attempts to bias judges. It is also public opinion, greatly influenced by the media where we tend to lose. Legislators often make their decisions based on what they hear from the public. They use their regulatory power to offer up the rights of hundreds of thousands to decide, rather than face an outcry by one family member losing a loved one, because the government did not adequately protect.

Many legislators believe the primary duty of government is to ensure safety. There is doctrine from our founding fathers to support their safety idealogy. Safety nannies began including safety from ourselves, and those “poor behavioral choices” some of us might make.

Fortunately, there are still some legislators, who interpret the governmental responsibility for safety to be restricted to safety from invading enemies, safety from an intrusive, overbearing, oppressive government, and public health involvement to be restricted to combating real and verified contagious epidemics. Some good lawmakers even insist that no laws should be made unless there is overwhelming constitutional basis. Those candidates will need our support in 2008.

In NC, over the last few days, the media has been reacting to NC DOT media blitzes about changes to the helmet laws. A few are mentioning our protest actions in several counties. Some of us have been going into forums, and have made some extremely persuasive arguments that constitutional rights are in serious jeopardy. The helmet law is vague, and will still be arbitrarily enforced, because the standard targets individuals. In opposition to us, those who support this assault on our liberties, have been indoctrinated to blame all motorcycle fatalities on “poor behavioral choices”, including the fact that we ride motorcycles rather than automobiles and SUV’s, which are mainstream.

We’ve heard “motorcycle enthusiasts” say they love their helmet, and how it saved their life. US DOT Secretary Mary Peters, a GW political appointee is saying it. Some enthusiasts, as well as some bikers, are convinced helmets saved them several times. Some of them support our right to decide, while others do not understand any concepts of freedom. We say go ahead and wear one (caution: they are not all that the government claims), just don’t force a helmet onto me. They do not understand the difference between rights and privilege, and wouldn’t know the constitution if it slapped them in the face. I found the following which might explain something about those people who swear by helmets:

Research by Wasserman et al. in 1988 * involved the questioning of cyclists on the streets as to whether they had hit their heads in the previous 18 months. This had happened to 20% of helmet wearers vs 2.7% of non-wearers – a seven-fold increase. Such results consistently help to explain why most helmet law supporters believe a helmet has saved their life – it’s partly because they are more likely to hit their heads. * (Wasserman, R.C., Waller, J.A., Monty, M.J., Emery, A.B. and Robinson, D.R., Bicyclists, helmets and head injuries: a rider-based study of helmet use and effectiveness, American Journal of Public Health, 1988)

There are people who state, as though fact, that everyone who rides without a helmet is guaranteed to eventually die from head injuries in a motorcycle crash. I heard the same thing from people who are against smoking, and the many other “poor behavioral choices” I make. So, which is it going to be? I can’t die from them all. At least, I won’t die from eating fast foods. I know I shouldn’t be saying this on the first day when many folks are struggling through the first day of some resolutions, but if we were to all give up everything we love, perhaps we will all die from boredom.

In 2008, there are several important fronts we will be working. One of them must be public opinion, but charity runs and picking up trash from the side of roadways to show we’re nice people is not going to do one single bit of good. We’ll need to get very good at blitzing the media, often, with messages that open peoples eyes as to where the bureaucrats claim to do well, when they are really not. In particular, the public who does not support our freedoms, will need to know the skiers and snowboarders will be next, with helmet checks at the southeast chairlift. More roadblocks will be appearing, with checks of “vhere are you papers” at state lines. The only ones free to travel about the country will be undocumented aliens, because without papers they will be the only ones without tracking devices.. There are proposals for gun owners to use smart guns which can only be used if the shooter has the correct chip implanted under the skin of their forearm. Eventually intelligent highway systems may outlaw not only motorcycle riders, but automobile drivers as well.

The line in the sand we have drawn that says no to mandatory helmet laws, is not just about helmets. It has much wider implications for freedom, if we can turn the tide. We will need the public to become concerned about the loss of each right, one by one, which has been increasing exponentially for the last 70 years.

See you at the protests, on liberty rides, in the courts, and at the voting booth,

THERE YOU HAVE IT, FIRST THURSDAY NEWS IN 2008–Not bad, if I don’t say so myself. Here’s my rundown for the Assalt Weapan for January until March. Jim Waggaman, at Air Stream Studios is finishing the tank adjustments, repainting the front fender and rear panels right now. The Pegasus crew and I will complete the Pegasus installation and dial in the wiring.

Kent
Kent Riches, of Air Tech Fairings, with our new Assalt Weapan unit.

I just picked up a complete fairing at Air Tech Studios and will begin building mounting brackets. I’m going to display the bike at the Grand National Car Show at the end of January then immediately ship it to Accurate Engineering for Dyno tuning. Then Berry, at Accurate, will haul it to Cinci for the Dealer show, then to Daytona for the Seminole Roadhouse Display. From there we hope to run the beast at the Maxton Mile.

kent2
Kent designed streamliner bodies for Easyriders, Bob George, Vesco and many of the fastest car guys in the world. He’s currently making the new Ack Attack streamliner body after last year’s wreck on the salt.

I just called Leif Gustaffson at his custom windshield shop in Florida and discovered that he’s closed until the 7th. Holy shit. We were turned down by the Fisher Foundation, because of the questionable Bikernet Content and we will reach out to the USO for a Veterans Charity to support.

So our Veterans’ program is not dialed in, but we’re working on it to raffle the Assalt Weapan off and do the utmost for veterans and take the winner to Bonneville in ’09 as a member of the 5-Ball Racing team. There you have it. Some of our kick-off goals for ’08. Hang on.

D&D EXHAUST QUESTION OF THE WEEK–Q: What is your best performing D&D pipe?

A: The 2 into 1 performs best due to the scavenging effect of our hand ported and polished merge collector. This serves the same function as a crossover pipe only without disturbing the flow. Fat Cats work best with stock and slightly modified engines while Boarzilla pipes are configured for big bore and highly modified applications.

Completing the burnout is an Old School Bobber built by Hardbikes. This bike runs the D&D Performance Enterprises high-performance exhaust system on a 96 inch S&S Engine with IST ignition.

This question was sent in from Brian Steel of Arlington, TX. Mr. D&D is taking all questions. Send your performance exhaust question to Mr. D&D at D & D Banner

RETIREMENT PLANNING FOR 2006– If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.

If you had purchased $1000 of Delta Air Lines stock you would have $49.00 left

But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, You would have had $214.00.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

It’s called the 401-Keg Plan.

Goodson Air Cleaner1

2-WHEELERS PRODUCT OF THE WEEK–American made Goodson Air Cleaners Price $189.95. These puppies were designed by Dennis Goodsen, of Fantasy in Iron, in Denver, Colorado. They are also manufactured in the US.

Recently a gentleman, who will remain nameless, blatantly stole Dennis’s hard work and design and attempted to manufacture the product out of the country to beat the man’s price. Watch out. The one featured here is the real thing and legal action is in the works. It breaks my heart to see this happen. There are so many directions to roll in, there’s no need to copy another man’s hard work.

CANADIAN DEAL OF THE WEEK–This bike started life as a ’91 Softail custom. I put 5 inches on the back bone and remove 2 inches from the down tube to install a FL front end. We streched the tank 8 inches, built my own fenders and saddle bags, then painted the bike metalflake with cobalt blue and did a flame job. I had the engine rebuilt and got it fully polish. I got two kinds of seats, one solo (tan one) and a dual seat in black.

It might be for sale, if I got the right price. contact:

HOW TO BEAT DRUG BUSTS– A former US policeman and undercover drug agent has appalled narcotics officials by introducing a Christmas video for drug users on how to avoid arrest and fool the police.

Barry Cooper, who is described by former colleagues as perhaps the best drug- enforcement officer in America, will next week begin marketing Never Get Busted Again, which will show viewers how to “conceal their stash, avoid narcotics profiling and fool canines every time”.

Cooper, who supports the legalization of marijuana, made the video because he believes that the fight against drugs in America is a waste of money. The convictions of marijuana users fills prisons with non- violent offenders, he says.

“My main motivation in all of this is to teach Americans their civil liberties, and what drives me in this is injustice and unfairness in our system,” Cooper told the Tyler Morning Telegraph in Texas.

He said that he will launch a video, DVD and website on Mondy. During an impressive career as a drug officer he made more than 800 drug arrests and seized more than 50 vehicles and $500,000 in assets.

“He was probably the best narcotics officer in the state, and maybe the country, during his time with the force,” said Tom Finley, his former boss.

The decision to produce a video has dismayed drug officials.

Richard Sanders, an agent with the Tyler Drug Enforcement Administration, said he plans to investigate whether it violates any laws.

“It outrages me personally, as I’m sure it does any officer that has sworn an oath to uphold the laws of this state and nation,” Sanders said. “It is clear that his whole deal is to make money and he has found some sort of scheme, but for him to go to the dark side and do this is infuriating.”

Cooper argues murderers, child molesters and rapists often receive shorter jail terms than drug users. “The trillions of dollars we’re spending in our war on drugs should be used to protect our children,” he said. “Our children are being molested every day and everyone knows we have lost the war on drugs.”

TOP 10 CORRUPT POLITICIANS FOR 2006– These guys make motorcycle clubs look like amateurs. The Government Needs To Clean Up Their Own Dirty Laundry BEFORE They Try To Lock Up The Citizens.

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released its 2006 list of Washington’s “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians.” The list, in alphabetical order, includes:

1. Jack Abramoff, Former Lobbyist – Abramoff is at the center of a massive public corruption investigation by the Department of Justice that, in the end, could involve as many as a dozen members of Congress. Abramoff pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud and a host of other charges on January 3, 2006, and was sent to prison in November to serve a five-year, 10-month sentence for defrauding banks of $23 million in Florida in 2000.

2. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) – In January 2006, Hillary Clinton’s fundraising operation was fined $35,000 by the Federal Election Commission for failing to accurately report more than $700,000 in contributions to Clinton’s Senate 2000 campaign. New information also surfaced in 2006 raising more questions about Hillary and her brother Anthony Rodham’s connection to the Clinton Pardongate scandal, where presidential pardons were allegedly traded in exchange for cash and other favors.

3. Former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-CA) – In November 2005, Cunningham pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion. He was sentenced to8 years, four months in prison and ordered to pay $1.8 million in restitution in March 2006.

4. Former Rep. Tom Delay (R-TX) – Tom DeLay, who was forced to step down from his position as House Majority Leader and then resign from Congress, decided in 2006 not to run for re-election.Congressman DeLay has been embroiled in a series of scandals from bribery to influence peddling, and was indicted twice by grand juries in Texas.

5. Former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) – Foley left the House in disgrace after news broke that he had been sending predatory homosexual emails to a House page. A recent House Ethics Committee report indicated that Republican leaders knew about Foley’s dangerous behavior, but failed to take action. Democrats, meanwhile, shopped the story to the press to influence the elections. Outrageously, the Committee recommended no punishment for those involved.

6. Rep. Denny Hastert (R-IL) – In addition to mishandling the Foley scandal, outgoing House Speaker Dennis Hastert allowed House ethics process to ground to a halt on his watch. Gary Condit, Cynthia McKinney, William Jefferson, John Conyers, Tom Delay, Duke Cunningham, Jim McDermott, Patrick Kennedy are examples of alleged wrongdoers who faced little-to-no ethics enforcement in the House.

7. Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) – Hastings is one of only six federal judges to be removed from office through impeachment and has accumulated staggering liabilities ranging from $2,130,006 to $7,350,000. Hastings was “next in line” for Chairmanship of the House Select Committee on Intelligence until a wave of protest forced Nancy Pelosi to select another candidate. Nonetheless, Hastings is expected to continue to serve on the Intelligence Committee.

8. Rep. William “Dollar Bill” Jefferson (D-LA) – Jefferson is alleged to have accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to help broker high-tech business deals in Nigeria. According to press reports, he was also caught on tape discussing the deals, while an FBI search of his home uncovered $90,000 in cash stuffed in his freezer.

9. Former Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) – Ohio Republican Congressman Bob Ney resigned in early November 2006, three weeks after pleading guilty for accepting bribes from an Indian casino in exchange for legislative favors. Ney was the first congressman to be convicted of a crime in the web of scandals involving former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and is expected to serve a jail sentence.

10. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) – Senator Reid came under fire in 2006 for failing to properly report to Congress a $700,000 land deal. Reid also accepted more than $30,000 of Abramoff-tainted money allegedly in return for his ”cooperation” in matters related Nevada Indian gaming.

“This list shows public corruption is endemic to our nation’s capital and that the anti-corruption work of Judicial Watch is needed more than ever,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The list could be much longer, as there are far too many politicians who abuse the public trust and place themselves above the law.”

BIKERNET NEW YEARS NEWS FINISH–Okay, I played with some political stuff for this end-of-the-year news blast. Suppose at the end of any year we should sit back and reflect on this chunk of our lives, then mentally prepare for 2007. I think 2006 was tough in some respects, and fantastic in others. It was a teacher in many ways.

Arielad

I feel good about the future and in particular about 2007 from a motorcycling standpoint. I believe/hope the Iraqi conflict will be answered and handled. Gas prices will taper down. The threats against our lifestyle regarding noise and EPA emissions will be dealt with and our industry will grow substantially. We have a terrific opportunity to work with SEMA, the hot rod aftermarket organization and all state motorcycle rights groups, to keep the custom bike world free and alive.

PABLO COMMENTS ON LATEST BONNEVILLE ASSALT WEAPON DRAWING FROM CHRIS KALLAS–Been looking at latest on the website. The sketches got me thinking. I started digging in my old file cabinet. I found a old S&S brouchure on their Tramp III bike. It’s called “An Experiment In Going Fast”.

These pic. might be good reference info. for you. They also used a girder front end. Made from aircraft tubing. Also shown is the frame being made at Dennis Manning’s shop.

S&S might still have copies of this old 4 page brouchure. It’s from about 1982 or so. Check out the RB racing website www.rbracing-rsr.com for some additional info.

A BIKERNET NEW YEARS LESSON IN THE CODE OF THE WEST– I’ve been a long time fan and had a questions about something that’s been bothering me for a while. Here’s who I am, in order to provide a bit of background. “Motorcycle enthusiast” is probably the best term to describe me. I have no idea how to turn wrenches and know that I’d rather get a scooter that would force me to learn the hard way. “Book smart” with little or no common sense or street smarts (I’m fond of saying that I usually let stupidity carry me through when fear should be stopping me). I’m not a biker or a bro – to me, those are honorifics that would have to be given to me by someone who is a biker or who calls me bro first and only after I earn that right. No scoot right now, but still trying to keep abreast of the biker world. Been to Sturgis twice (and nowhere else), had a blast both times – with the exception of the thing that is on my mind. Married to a woman who has years of experience with biker culture and is miles ahead of me with understanding what’s up – she was the one who helped me get my motorcycle endorsement and paid for a couple years of Easyriders, Biker and In the Wind. That was where I first read your work, and discovered who Indian Larry was.

Should I give up any hope of being a biker and leave it to being an observer, watching but never being, just to make sure I don’t screw anybody else? Or is this one of those terrible conicidences, something to think about and remember, but not something to prevent me from going further?

— Matt

Thanks for taking the time to write. You need to read the code of the west in Bandit’s Cantina. The first rule is “Get up and dance.” You can’t do anything in life without that one rule. If you get up and start to move, feel every ounce of that freedom. Then sit back and ask yourself if you enjoy it? If you did, keep rolling. You’ll know when and where to stop. Don’t let anything, mistakes, blunders, falls, anything, to stop you.

We only go around once. If you want to do something, ya gotta move. If not you’re burnin’ daylight, and daylight is precious. You’ll noticed I didn’t put any particular move or goal in this ramble. One of the wonderful things about being a biker is the myriad of options. The choice is yours. Whatever you do, do it with pride and the understanding that there are no judges, only your sense of freedom and self-inflicted restrictions or obstacles.

Report in in six months. I want to know what happened. I heard a quote the other day: The past is just History, the future is a mystery and today is a gift. Don’t waste it.

Happy Goddamn New Year,

It’s going to be a dandy. I believe it. I stumbled onto this quote recently: The Past is History, The Future is a Mystery and today is a gift. Cherish each day.

Let’s hit the news, so I can weld a stand to hook up a gas heater in the shop. It’s cold, if you can call Southern California cold, ever.

The Easyriders Pomona, California show is the following weekend. I’m hauling the shrunken FXR and the Salt Shaker. The Easyriders Event crew scheduled a bike show every weekend for almost three straight months. Insane. We’re going to bring you coverage as they happen and two class winner features for each show. We’ll have our hands full. Happy New Year:

She doesn?t know it yet, but Gracie produces THE FINEST leather jackets, vests, lambskin shirts, etc? Mike and Lori are very proud to welcome Gracie in to their lives; she is the finest product of these two apparel geniuses have created.

Now, about that apparel? in case you didn?t know, Mike and Lori have been faithful sponsors of Bikernet from the beginning. First as HA Leather and now as Lil Joe?s Legendary Leathers. If ever we need and jacket or vest, Lil Joes is who we turn to. Shit, the only reason we need a jacket or vest is to give one as a gift. The ones we already have, worn well for the years we?ve owned them.

They also have a denim vest, ?Black Magic?, with leather trim that has to be seen to appreciate. I have one and love it.

NORTH CAROLINA HEADED TO THE DOGS–GREENBORO, N.C. – In a far-reaching decision that could potentially make cheerleaders or pop singers a target for prosecution, a 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a ban on erotic simulation in adult entertainment venues throughout the state of North Carolina.

The case of club owner Giovanni Carandola vs. Douglas A. Fox, chairman of the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, met its fate this week before the Circuit Court, which ruled that the state can prohibit erotic movements or gestures at alcohol-licensed establishments even if the performer is fully clothed. Only venues that are “primarily” devoted to the arts or theatrical performances are exempt from the ban.

The court’s decision comes as the last stop in a battle that began in 2000 when a commission officer for the ABCC witnessed dancers at Carandola’s Christie’s Cabaret “performing in a manner that violated then-applicable state law.”

Two years after Carandola was first cited, the 4th Circuit struck down that law for being overly broad, only to have the Legislature amend it last year with even more specific guidelines prohibiting adult venues from allowing simulated sex acts of any kind that mimick masturbation, sodomy, sexual intercourse, bestiality, oral copulation or flagellation. The terms of the amendment also included touching, caressing or fondling of the breasts, buttocks, anus, vulva or genitals and the use of artificial devices or inanimate objects.

In final arguments before the 4th Circuit, attorneys for Carandola argued that that law, even in its amended state, had a chilling effect on adult entertainment and posed a major threat to protections of the 1st and 14th Amendments.

Carandola even brought in anthropologist Dr. Judith Hanna to testify that movements in dance “such as those with the hips, thighs, breasts, hair and hands have traditionally been associated with simulating sex,” therefore making the law so broad as to prohibit constitutionally protected expression of the most basic kind.

The law exempts theaters, concert halls, art centers or theatrical performances when those performances are expressing “matters of serious literary, artistic, scientific or political value.”

“No one would mistake a dancer gyrating her hips for someone having intercourse, nor believe that a Carolina Panthers cheerleader patting her buttocks as part of a dance routine was masturbating,” Judge Diana Gribbon Motz wrote in her dissent.

WEALTH PAYS OFF–Local millionaire Charles Lamar Switzer will not have to return to prison, a judge decided on Wednesday.

Circuit Judge Nick Geeker resentenced the 56-year-old Gulf Breeze resident to the 10 months he already had served in state prison for a cocaine-trafficking conviction as part of the “Operation Sandshaker” drug bust in 2003.

Switzer, who sat on Pensacola Junior College’s advisory board before he was arrested in 2003, also was fined $2,500.Geeker originally sentenced Switzer to three years, which he began serving in January.

However, on Nov. 3, the 1st District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee ruled that Switzer’s numerous cocaine buys could not be added up to meet the threshold for cocaine trafficking. The court ordered Geeker to enter a conviction for the less-serious charge of conspiracy to sell, manufacture or deliver cocaine.

That charge does not carry the mandatory three-year minimum sentence for Switzer’s original conviction.

Switzer had been free on bond pending the appeal.

Switzer was one of more than 50 people charged in the cocaine investigation dubbed “Operation Sandshaker.” A number of the defendants purchased small amounts of cocaine that, over time, added up to a significant amount, prosecutors argued.

During trial, Simon tied Switzer to 78.15 grams of cocaine between 2001 and 2003.

We’re going to get a group together and ride from LA to Bakersfield on Fri. Jan 5 and meet up with the Biker build off group. They plan a stop at the Holiday Inn Express in Bakersfield and will be leaving Sat. Morn. to ride to the Easyriders show in Pomona. If anyone is interested in joining us call me or send me an e-mail for details.

–Gene Koch

You received these emails from me. This was misinterpreted as a Hamster vs. Hamster Build Off. We need to correct that. Brian Korelec works for Leroy-Thompson Choppers, and is assisting in the build off. Technically the build off is between Scott Webster, who is not a Hamster and Butch and Dawn from Stinger Custom Cycles. Butch is a Hamster. We just wanted to make that clarification, so there is no confusion.
