If you remember your high school math an axiom is something universally regarded as true. About a year ago Mark Nemets, himself a rider for over 20 years, chucked the corporate world of computer and finance consulting to pursue his own universal truth, that working on motorcycles, with other motorcyclists, was a much more enjoyable way to earn to his daily bread.
His own first ride, back in the ‘80s, was an ironhead Sportster. Since cash was scarce back in the day, he used to buy bikes that needed work and developed his wrenching skills through trial and error and by asking for advice. “I found that motorcycle people were always willing to help, another reason motorcycling became part of my life. When I was just out of school, I went to work and managed to always have a bike and a hotrod car, Chevelles, Mustangs and Camaros. Since I didn’t have any money to afford mechanics, I learned to fix them in my carport. I eventually made enough money from consulting to open my own shop, a dream come true for me.” Mark laughs and adds,
Asked why he chose the name Axiom for his business, Mark explains, “When I thought about starting my business dealings with other people, one of the things very key to me was being honest with my customers, being right up front and giving them a fair shake. It seemed that everything was all about the buck, sacrificing your ethics and morals to get the job. And I won’t do that. Never have, and never will. And so…Axiom.”
The cozy 2000 sq. ft. shop located in Santa Ana, CA has an open door policy where you’ll be greeted by Mark and chief mechanic John Clayton. “We have a little office area up front, a couple desks and chairs, a refrigerator, a stereo, and in the work area our welders and work benches. Customers can walk in, sit down and we’ll talk bikes. Together we’ll figure out what direction they want to go. If they’re doing a custom we talk about what look they want, what kind of riding they do.”
”Say a guy comes in with his Harley and wants some pipes, a seat, whatever; we show him what we have and how we do it. If he just wants the parts and to learn to do it himself, we’ll show him. We offer full service, everything from adjusting a clutch to rebuilds of motor and transmissions and a wide selection of aftermarket products. We’ve got all the factory and custom parts, all the bling a custom customer might want including full ground up customs, tailored to the owner’s needs and specs.”
As far as motorcycle styles, Axiom’s inclined toward the Old School Bobbers. For example, Axiom offers a Santee Softail framed bobber motorcycle rolling chassis featuring springer forks, bars, wire wheels and tires with matching tank and fenders for $2999.95. In the shop you’ll also find stretched choppers and pavement blistering Pro Street customs.
“We also work on bikes for the ladies including lowering the bike through suspension, seat and handlebar modifications so they’re more comfortable. Basically, we like to build that dream motorcycle each person has in their heads,” Mark said. “We have pictures of hundreds of bikes for the customer to look through while they have a cup of coffee.”
Custom paint options are very personalized as well with four painters hooked up with the shop, again getting away from the mass production line and dealing on a one-to-one ratio. They are however keeping up with the new regulations for 2006 by producing an EPA, NADA and Kelly Blue Book compliant bikes while maintaining the ability to produce a custom tailored bike, all under the Axiom label. HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND YORK UNION REACH AGREEMENT,Motorcycle Production to Resume Tonight– York, Pa., Feb. 22, 2007 — Harley-Davidson Motor Company reported that motorcycle production will resume with the third shift this evening at the Company’s final assembly operations in York, following today’s ratification of a new labor agreement by its unionized employees. The new three-year agreement between the Company and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 175 becomes effective today.
Harley-Davidson employees in York had been on strike since Feb. 2, after rejecting an initial proposed labor agreement Jan. 31.IAM Local 175 represents about 2,800 production employees at Harley-Davidson’s facility in York, which produces the Company’s Touring and Softail motorcycles and is the Company’s largest production operation.
“We are eager to get back to work producing motorcycles again,” said Fred Gates, General Manager of Harley-Davidson’s Operations in York. “Our employees take enormous pride in building the best, highest quality motorcycles in the world and we all look forward to focusing our attention on meeting the needs of our customers.”
“The agreement is an important step in managing costs that could be detrimental to the business over the long term if the Company doesn’t start to control them now,” said Gates. “The agreement helps reduce the escalation in health care and other labor-related costs while continuing to provide an outstanding total compensation and benefits package. We appreciate the support of our union employees for sharing in the solutions to ongoing business challenges,” Gates said.
The new labor agreement provides annual wage increases of four percent in each of the contract’s three years. The agreement also establishes a two-tier wage structure which starts employees hired after the contract’s effective date at a wage rate that is lower than current employees, but equalizes pay by the end of the contract’s term. On the benefits side, unionized employees will participate in a new health plan that continues to require no employee premium but includes increases in the level of out-of-pocket costs that employees could incur for deductibles and co-pays.
Under the agreement, unionized employees in York continue to be fully covered by the Company’s traditional non-contributory pension plan. However, for new hires, the agreement reduces the Company’s match of optional contributions that employees can make to the contributory portion of the plan. The agreement also doubles the Company’s 401(k) match to 50 percent and provides other compensation and benefit improvements.
Harley-Davidson’s production and distribution facilities in Wisconsin are expected to resume normal operations over the next several weeks as a result of the resumption of production in York. The Company’s Wisconsin operations experienced reduced production and temporary layoffs of some employees due to the strike. The Wisconsin production facilities supply engines, transmissions and other components to Harley-Davidson’s final assembly operations in York and Kansas City.

The show this Thursday is a build-off between Chica of Chica Custom Cycles, Huntington Beach, CA and Michael Barragan of Evil Spirit Engineering, Glendale, CA. Chica built a red and white homage to the sixties… laid back, long bars, banana seat, eight foot sissy bar… totally hand wrought. He calls his creation the “Mama-san Special” because it is built in honor of his wife, Hitomi. On the ride she’s up behind him the entire length of the trip.
Barragan, an up and comer, is revered in Japan though just becoming known in the U.S. He built a post industrial, futuristic ghetto sled in his small but extremely intense shop behind his house. The two fabricators meet in Ft. Worth, Texas in the historic Stockyards casino where Hugh”Chopper” King deals them a hand which seals their fate and which sends them on their way to the 300,000 plus Lone Star Rally in Galveston.

S&S OBTAINS EPA ENGINE CERTIFICATION, UNLEASES NEW ENGINE–All three of S&S Cycles’ V-Series engine families have been EPA certified, making S&S the first motorcycle engine manufacturer to produce pre-certified EPA compliant engines for use by individuals and custom bike builders.By using motors that are pre-certified to meet emissions regulations, individuals and builders can now build EPA compliant motorcycles without having to go through the complicated and costly emissions testing procedures themselves. This will allow small volume manufacturers to build and sell as many custom motorcycles as they want to, and individuals can now own, ride and sell them without prior restrictions – as long as the engine package is not altered in any way that increases exhaust emissions.
“This is a very important announcement for the V-Twin industry, including every builder and shop in the U.S,” says S&S VP of product development, Scott Sjovall. “We have been working hard on these certifications since the letter of guidance was issued in July of 2006, and I’m extremely happy to see all three of the engine families approved just as the 2007 season is ready to kick off.”
On the heels of this announcement comes word of S&S Cycle’s all-new X-Wedge engine which is also right in line with the EPA’s most stringent environmental expectations. A departure from previous engine efforts, the X-Wedge is a 56-degree, closed-loop fuel-injected, three-cam, overhead valve V-Twin. One key engineering feature is the versatility of this design and the ability to create a wide range of engine sizes. Immediate plans include a 117ci X-Wedge to be released later this year, but in the future bore and stroke sizes can be maximized to create up to a 139ci engine. Regardless of the displacement, the 56-degree V-Twin utilizes three belt-driven cams – two exhaust cams and a common intake cam – to achieve almost straight pushrod angles. Combine these cams with automotive-style rockers and roller tappets to create what S&S calls an incredibly quiet, EPA noise conscious valvetrain.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON 2007 DAYTONA RIDE-IN SHOW SET FOR MARCH 7– MILWAUKEE (February 20, 2007) – Some of the world’s coolest custom motorcycles will be the main attraction at the annual Harley-Davidson Ride-In Show on Wednesday, March 7 at the upcoming 66th annual Bike Week in Daytona Beach, Fla. Harley-Davidson owners are invited to enter the competition for cash and trophies, while motorcycle enthusiasts can check out the sweet selection of rolling artwork.
Owners can enter their Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the Ride-In Show Contest to be held on Wednesday, March 7 at the Ocean Center Arena, 101 N. Atlantic Avenue. Registration is from 8-11 a.m., with judging to follow by Harley-Davidson design experts and prize awards. The $10 entry fee is donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and each participant receives a special edition commemorative plaque designed by Willie G. INDY INSIDER REPORT–Still sorting things out, but everythings changed from the days when Bourget and Coddington wowed the crowd. Crate chops are dead dead dead — straight from the source, which I can’t give up.
Metric chops are more in evidence but not hugely. Saw way more atvs and scooters than bikes. Branding for the new mfgs. will be impossible and they’re left selling a commodity.
Personally really like the new Victory bagger(s) — at my age, I can see Sue and I on one in a few years. I think they’ve hit the demographic bullseye dead center. They’ve put a lot of thought into the instrumentation and accessories and avoided looking like an H-D clone.
I think dealers, and it is a dealer show, saw a lot of new and/or alternative product to sell. The Cycle World dinner presentation showed continued (but slower) positive motorcycle growth (registrations). Chinese (Asian) everywhere – too bad for American manufacturing – just a memory now. Plenty of knock offs, of knock offs.
I think overall everyone felt positive – at least there were a lot of orders getting written. I thought last year had more buzz, but this year felt very confident. My new term for the show overall is alternative transportation – motorized things with wheels that aren’t cars or trucks. Powersports is definitely not about just motorcycles anymore. Ya should’ve seen the Castrol booth girls. I think I’m permanantly blind just thinking about them — and no, I don’t have pix of their gorgeous asses.

The legislature is not even in regular session yet, and we already have the HB265 bill in the Florida House and companion SB984 in the Florida Senate. These bills conveniently do not include the word ‘motorcycle’ or ‘cycle’ but if these bills are passed into law in their current form, the face of motorcycling in Florida will severely change. The result will mean only the wealthy will be able to legally ride. A few short on money but big on cojones will choose not to meet the requirements of the new law. Unfortunately that will mean they are criminals and subject to fine, prosecution and incarceration. Why do we already know this? Why are we already working on this when search engines do not discover any threat to motorcycling in this bill? ABATE OF FLORIDA members join together and involve themselves in fundraising to provide for a lobbyist. This same lobbyist called this to our attention just about the time the ink was drying on the bill. This onerous bill deletes a portion of statute that defines motor vehicles. This same portion being deleted happens to exclude motorcycles from carrying PIP. Forget about the cost of carrying PIP on a motorcycle (and that you cannot buy it), but imagine how much it will cost to insure yourself against being run over by someone. No fault situations do not work or provide affordable solutions for someone riding a motorcycle. The reason insurance companies want helmets on motorcyclists boils down to the simple fact that when someone they insure runs over one of us, it costs them big money. As a motorcyclist, you know that a helmet is not going to save you from injury and/or death when Joe Impala runs over you so you understand why insurance companies are going to make you pony up big time when a new law makes you responsible for paying for your injuries when someone runs over you. HB265/SB984 will relieve the at-fault Joe Impala’s insurance company of the financial responsibility of running you over. Ride safe out there and if you want to keep riding, get yourself signed up as a member and pay attention. Those who have been carrying your load and pulling your weight all of these years may come up short without your help, so get off your can and take yourself off the welfare biker role??. KENNEDY HIGH BIKE PROJECT UPDATE–Things are going great for the Kennedy High bikeproject. We have our, 100% made from scratch studentbuilt gas tank, out to paint as well as a custom oilbag we modified. The rear fender and frame should beready to go by the weekend and now we are focusing onour old school ’58 Panhead build. The frame and frontend came back from paint over the weekend and alreadythis morning we have it coming together. This oldPanhead is S&S stroked and will be running an GoblinMillworx tested Hunt magneto, with a Solutionsmachining anodized cover. The paint on the tank willincorporate some retro touches and will be on displayat the Donnie Smith show with our other class bike.We will incorporate a new school and a second oldschool build every year now to show the public whatthe Kennedy kids are capable of. Next year there willbe a ’47 Knuck in the mix along side our 2008 build. –TEACH 2007 SENATE BILL 5985 REGARDING THE OPERATION OF SPLITTING LANES–Introduced by Sen. Dan Swecker on February 12, 2007, to allow motorcycle operators to travel between lanes traveling in the same direction when traffic is moving less than half of the posted speed limit. Motorcyclist would be limited to speeds of 10 miles per hour above the average speed of traffic when traveling between lanes. ROSS PISTON REPORT– In June 1937, BSA entered a specially tuned 500cc Empire Star in a 3 lap race at Brook lands circuit ridden by TT ace Walter Handley. He won the race at an average speed of 102.27mph, with a fastest lap of 107.57mph. His 100+mph lap earned him a Brook lands Gold Star, and so was born one of the world’s great motorcycles. BSA immediately developed an all alloy tuned version of the Empire Star, naturally named it the “Gold Star”, and started production within a few months.
JM24-102 is the oldest BSA M24 Gold Star still in existence, the second off the production line in 1937. Total production for 1938-39 was 480. It left the BSA factory with nine others on 17/12/1937 and was delivered to Imperial Motors in Bedford, where it was displayed until registered in May 1939.
Nothing is known of the bikes history until Dec 1947, when it was acquired by a Mr George Lockwood of Bedford, who may well have bought it from Imperial Motors where it would have remained during the war years. He sold it in July 1948 to a Mr Joseph Ford of Stony Stratford, Bucks and it was next sold on to Mr Gilbert Ball of Cheltenham in March 1949. (I have a copy of the original advertisement in “The Motorcycle” dated 10/3/49, which describes the bike as being in ‘as new’ condition). Mr Ball owned the bike until June 1961, when it was sold to a Mr James Hehir.
From 1962 until 1994 it lay unused in a shed in Gloucestershire, where it was discovered by the family of the last known owner, a Mr Tony Price. His sons Rob and Dexter Price, both ex TT & Manx GP riders, re-commissioned the bike in 1996, and it was ridden again for the first time in 34 years at the Silverstone Classic Motorcycle Festival, and displayed on the BSA Gold Star Owners Club stand.The bike saw little use after that, until Mr. George Wander acquired it in April 2000 at a Bonham’s Classic motorcycle auction.
He has carried out a thorough mechanical and electrical overhaul. After which hehas used it regularly on the road. It has appeared every year since 2001 at the ‘Coupes Moto Legende’ classic bike meetings at Montlhery and Dijon in France and on 2 occasions at Cadwell Park circuit at the Beezumph Rally.
In September 2006 I was fortunate to be given an entry to the 2006 Klausenrennen Memorial, a 21km mountain race from the foot to the summit of the Klausen pass in central Switzerland, a rise of some 4000 feet in altitude involving 136 bends! This event, open to pre 1939 cars and motorcycles, takes place every 4 years to commemorate the original Klausenpass races held from 1922 to 1934.
Despite being dogged by magneto problems during the practice runs, the bike finished both races at a respectable average speed just under 50mph.
Late in 2006 Ross forged pistons was contacted to make a replacement piston for this beauty of a bike. Some metal transfer had left the stock piston a little less then functional. They were more then happy to lend a hand in keeping a fine piece history on the road.
JM24 102 remains 100% original and unrestored, except the Ross forged piston beating in the heart of this rare and noble beast. And in owner Georges Wander’s opinion, is the finest and most interesting of the 30 or so pre-war M24 Gold Stars still in existence around the world.

SOMETHING HAPPENED AT BANDIT’S CANTINA BAR–Ted was drinking in a bar when the guy sitting beside him fell off his stool.
Ted helped him back up, but soon he fell off again.
“How about if I take you home, buddy?” asked Ted.
The drunk agreed.
On the way to the car, he fell twice more.
When Ted got him home, the poor man fell again just walking up the sidewalk.
Ted rang the bell and a woman answered the door.
Ted said, “Ma’am, your husband was too drunk to come home on his own, so I drove him.”

V-TWIN EXPO, LAST MONTH IN CINCY, PROVES SEVEN IS A LUCKY NUMBER– Agoura Hills, CA-Wrapping up the 7th annual V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati, OH proved the v-twin focused show hit the target from both a dealer and exhibitor perspective. The success also proves the industry is hopping.
“Booth renewals are way up from last year and dealers comments assured us we are bringing them value and positive return on their time investment” said V-Twin Show Producer Jim Betlach. “Seminars this year were standing room only, with many dealers attending the same seminar twice.” continued Betlach. “Dealers come for one reason; grow their business. MARSHALS VISIT INDIANAPOLIS DEALER EXPO 2007–Yesterday at the Dealer Expo 2007 in Indianapolis U.S. Marshals served papers on about half a dozen exhibitors who allegedly manufactured unauthorized copies of patent-protected products. Manufacturers who claimed the exhibitors had violated intellectual property laws filed the lawsuits. Additional lawsuits may be served today.
Advanstar sends letters to companies accused of copying products, notifying them that their future participation in the Expo could be denied if they are held liable for the offense.
“It’s an understandable concern of our exhibitors,” said Tracy Harris, vice president with show owner Advanstar, “but we’re not the police.”
Contingent of lawyers are walking the floor looking for exhibitors who might be selling illegal copies of manufacturers products. I have had quite a few illegal copies of my parts produced here in the US and China. So, I can only approve what’s happening this weekend in Indianapolis.

STEALTH BIKE SHOP WEEKLY REPORT–Man the spring thaw is on here in Charlotte! 70 degrees today! It feels real good. Bikes are back out on the road!
Here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS things are starting to pick up some with the warmer weather. The FXR that we have been working on is almost done. It suffered a hammer attack from an ex-wife and has survived. We had a guy drop off an old rigid frame for a Triumph for some metal work. It is pretty rough right now but Chopper John is going to work some magic on it.
I did not send anything in last week. Our pit bull J.C. has had some surgery on his paw and has been using 3 legs. J.C. is the security chief at SBW. He should be as good as new in a couple of weeks.
Do any of you get tired of hearing all the celebrity news? You know the stuff like, “Brittany shaved her head!” Who cares? The tragic death of Anna Nicole Smith has now been turned into a circus. Everyone has come out of the wood work claiming to be the father of her daughter! Why? The same reason behind so many things, BIG $ ! I for one really get tired of all of this.
Not much else to report on this week. The riding season is real close so hang in there!

We blew through another week. It’s all good, but hectic. We finally nailed down the manufacturer for our Assalt Weapan frame. Ron Paugh of Paughco and Jason, their frame guy are working with Leo DiOrio and Chris Kallas on the final details. I’m scrambling to have that roller poised on our lift and begin the sheetmetal process with Rick Krost, of U.S. Choppers.
Larry Settle of Settle’s Customs in Harbor City mounted our Avon Azaro tires to our Renegade machined American Wheels and Leo DiOrio is working with RMD to have his girder front end delivered ’bout the same time the Paughco frame lands in the LA Harbor. Hang on.

KISSIMMEE POLICE CHIEF OWNS TRAFFIC SCHOOL–KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Eyewitness News has learned Kissimmee’s top cop also owns a traffic school, allowing her to make money on tickets handed out by her own officers. She notified the state, Monday, about the business, after Eyewitness News questioned her. Fran Iwanski became Kissimmee’s police chief in October. She then had 30 days to notify the Florida Ethics Commission about her business.Over the phone, Chief Iwanski said she has not done anything unethical, but the county never got the financial disclosure form until Monday afternoon, after Eyewitness News asked about it. “It was just an oversight. It was just an error,” said Gregory Iwanski, the chief’s husband. Gregory Iwanski spoke for his wife, Monday. Eyewitness News asked why she didn’t turn in a form that all local government leaders have to fill out with the state ethics commission. It lists financial interests as required by law.People Eyewitness News spoke to thought Iwanski’s dual role as chief and part owner of a traffic school in Kissimmee is questionable. “I mean, the police officers are giving out tickets and it could be for their gain,” said resident Bonnie Nelson.Eyewitness News ran into city manager Mark Durbin on the street and tried to ask him about Iwanski, but he refused to comment. Instead, Eyewitness News talked to a city spokeswoman.”He trusts her completely and does not believe there is a conflict of interest,” spokeswoman Carla Banks said.Iwanski said she never kept her stake in the Orange-Osceola Safety Institute a secret. Before she became chief last year, she told the city about the school in 2000 and 2004. However, Iwanski insisted over the phone that one has nothing to do with the other. A House committee on Wednesday unanimously approved the bill, which was introduced after a man was charged with stealing a chicken and killing the animal while having sex with it in northwest Indiana. Lake County Detective Michelle Weaver told lawmakers Wednesday that the measure could protect people as well as animals. Those who have sex with animals are sexual predators who often move from harming animals to harming people, she said. “They don’t just stick to animals,” she said. The provision would create a uniform standard for the state. Some cities and towns outlaw such acts, but the state does not. “I think our constituents would be surprised to learn that bestiality is not a crime in state code,” said Rep. Eric Koch, R-Bedford.The legislation would make sex with animals a misdemeanor in most cases but a felony if the animal “suffers extreme pain or death.” The bill also would make killing an animal with the intent to threaten or terrorize another family member a felony. ScotteVest Stealthywear: George W. Wears This Stuff

Scott Jordon was into skiing, motorcycling and other outdoor sports including a bit of sports car racing, but couldn’t find the type of clothing to carry what he needed to carry without looking like he was preparing to climb Mt. Everest. He wanted outdoor clothing that would keep him comfortable and carry his necessities… sunglasses, wallet, passport, toll change, snacks, sun tan lotion, camera, film, keys, first aid kit, tools, as well as electronic gear, e.g. cell phone, GPS, MP3, you know, the array of modern personal, communication, weapons and entertainment gear, but still look good doing it. Form and function as it were. Necessity being one mother of an invention incentive, he began designing his vision of the right stuff. It worked out so well that he left the law shingle behind and went full bore designing clothing that works. He calls the company Scottevest (pronounced ScottieVest.)
“I sort of joke that what we’re doing is the most interesting thing that’s happened to clothing since the bikini,” said Jordan, speaking from his home in Ketchum, Idaho. “For thousands of years clothing has done essentially 2 1?2 things; protect you from the elements, and number two, as an afterthought, make a fashion statement. The other “half” is the pockets. Well, okay, let’s slap a pocket here without thinking much about whether it’s a good place for a pocket, what people are going to put in there, how do you avoid things from falling out, how will you be able to feel a vibrating cell phone and easily access it.
Today many clothing companies don’t allow for those considerations because the designers themselves usually don’t carry around a bunch of stuff. It’s even more relevant with the “hands-free” legislation that’s passing like wildfire through the U.S. and already required in Europe and Asia.”
PAN without the Peter
Here we get to the “networking” system or Personal Area Network (PAN), hidden channels that allow users to connect electronic devices, aka gizmos, without any visible wires, the pathways built into ScotteVest vests and jackets. PAN provides a means by which you can plug your electronics through out of sight connections integrated through the pockets then attached to buds around the collar to route the earphone wires to your ears, a la Secret Service. That’s right, a wearable solar charging system designed into your clothing that continually charges your battery operated gizmos. Even James Bond didn’t have this one. What we have here is a jacket that itself is a gadget.

ScotteVest products have already created quite a buzz in other sections of the country. Word is that the gear has caught the eye of CIA and certain special ops military services. The story goes that a Secret Service agent was wearing one of the SeV jackets in the White House when George W saw it and asked for one. Bottom line is that you can carry a small laptop in the jacket or a mini-Uzi and no one will know about it. Solar Three.0 Finetex Jacket with Solar Option
I was ready for my next secret mission, or a run to the burger stand, when I donned this jacket, the company’s signature SeV Finetex combined with the removable solar panels. It’s literally got all the hidden bells (42 pockets and compartments) and whistles we mentioned in the prototype biker jacket plus other features including a set of hidden epaulets designed to use any standard belt clip. You can attach devices to either shoulder, for example hands-free operation of your cell phone/PDA speaker phone/camera or walky-talky. It features magnetic/Velcro/zipper/snap closures, special interior security pockets for credit cards and memory cards as well as the full spectrum of concealed pockets plus the optional and removable solar panel attached to the back of the jacket.
Now these jackets have a learning curve to navigate all the pockets and for deciding on your uses for each. They do come with an “owner’s manual”. Call it a voyage of discovery because of all its features. The accompanying literature is well-written, clear and well, fun. The exterior of the jacket is FineTex © that is waterproof, windproof and breathable, also lightweight but tough, has zip-off sleeves turning it into a vest, collar loops for earbuds or microphone, Coolmax © lining, the PAN system, a padded collar and James Bondish styling. It’s got its act together. It fits, feels and functions with what I’d guess you’d call confidence. You can tell some serious thought went into its design.
In one of the large “handwarmer” pockets, there’s even an elastic beverage holder to hold a beverage upright and a hat-hold clip located at the left bottom seam. In the right exterior breast pocket, there’s a plastic holder that pulls out to display a badge/credential holder, ID, name tag, whatever. On the outside of the comfy felt-lined collar is an unzippable hood and on the inside of the collar, a conduit for hiding earphone wires. You want more? In the inside left breast pocket, there’s a clipped-on eyeglass chamois. The big pocket on the back will take your laptop, magazines, books or even a hydration system. A nice touch is that every pocket has a card listing the pocket’s potential uses and applications.
It Velcro’s onto the back of the jacket and looks like a design element rather than hardware. The flexible, lightweight thin-film photovoltaic material is made from copper iridium gallium diselenide (CIGS), a sun absorbing material placed onto a thin substrate. The panels charge a battery pack that’s included and which takes 2-3 hours to charge in direct sunlight, longer on cloudy days but also in artificial light. The battery pack takes 2-3 hours to charge a cell phone, 3-5 for a MP3 player.
You route the 4-foot wire into the zipper pocket on the back of the jacket, then to any of the internal or external jacket pockets through the provided holes. You can then insert the solar charger male connector into the auxiliary battery pack (ABP) female connector. A red LED tells you charging is taking place, a green one tells you the charge is complete. If there’s not enough light, the red light remains off. The ABP will charge most USB compatible devices, but note that Apple iPod is a bit more iffy and requires “computer authentication”. Next you use a standard cable (not supplied) to the auxiliary box female USB port and connect it your hand held device. You can charge up while riding, sort of a mobile solar generating plant on two wheels. The solar panels can get wet, but you don’t want to take them scuba diving. Also, you can only charge one device at a time. But if you’re camping in Death Valley without a wall outlet in sight, you’ve still got juice.
We think the solar charger is way cool and certainly makes sense if you’re cruising off the beaten track and far from electrical hookups. Having a readily available source of energy (and pollution free to boot) seems a boon. Plus the grin factory explaining what that thing lying across your back does is worth the price of admission. And you can wear the curly earphone wire which might get you a better table at McDonald’s.

FREEDOM OF CHOICE MAY COME WITH A PRICE TAG Pennsylvania motorcyclists successfully modified their mandatory helmet law in 2003 to allow riders 18 and older the option of wearing a helmet, but now a lawmaker wants bikers who don’t wear a helmet to carry at least $10,000 in medical insurance to cover injuries if they crash. State Sen. Constance Williams says the requirement honors bikers’ freedom to ride helmetless while making sure they take financial responsibility for their decision.
Governor Ed Rendell, who signed the law that allows bikers to ride without a helmet, has said more Pennsylvanians die from smoking than motorcycle accidents, but Sen. Williams cites a national report being circulated among State Legislatures that says highway fatalities are on the rise for the first time in 20 years, linking the increase to deaths from motorcycle crashes.
NEW TWIST FOR HELMET LAW MODIFICATION Lost revenues from tourism has become a common theme for modifying helmet laws in states that claim motorcyclists are riding around them and spending their vacation money in other states that don?t require helmets.
Now Virginia has taken that argument a step further by proposing legislation that would allow motorcyclists to ride without a helmet on state scenic highways. On all other roads, police would not be allowed to stop riders for not wearing helmets unless they are stopped for another driving offense such as speeding, making the helmet violation a secondary offense.
Virginia motorcyclists are requesting help from across the country to pass HB 2585, asking riders to write their Delegates to let them know that you would spend your tourism dollars in Virginia if the state allowed freedom of choice on its beautiful scenic byways.
Bikers in Nebraska also want the right to make their own decisions about helmets, saying the current helmet law is costing the state $2-5 million a year during annual bike festivals in neighboring states because motorcyclists avoid riding through helmet law states.
Motorcyclists are lobbying the Unicameral legislature in Lincoln to support LB 253, a bill that would allow riders 21 and older to ride without a helmet. ABATE of Nebraska is not asking for letters or phone calls to their legislators at this juncture, but they would like for out-of-state riders to visit their website at www.abateofne.com and fill out a simple online poll that will allow them to put together written testimony from motorcyclists from across the nation.
?ABATE of Nebraska has once again filed legislation to establish Freedom Of Choice for adult motorcyclists,? said Tiger Mike Revere, state coordinator for ABATE of Oklahoma and member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) Board of Directors. ?They have appealed for our help, and I pledged NCOM’s support for their campaign. Unfortunately, I have the additional subject of the Helmet Law assault in Oklahoma to address.?
TELEVISION DOESN?T REFLECT REALITY Most people drive safer than television characters, according to a University of Alabama at Birmingham study. The UAB study of 79 prime time TV shows revealed that actors often don?t buckle up before they drive and sometimes don?t wear helmets when they ride motorcycles and bicycles.
The research study, published in the journal Injury Sciences, found that over four weeks the television characters buckled up only 62 percent of the time. The TV characters used motorcycle helmets only 47 percent of the time and bicycle helmets nine percent of the time. Research shows most Americans are much safer ? buckling seat belts 80 percent of time, using motorcycle helmets 60 percent of the time bicycle helmets 40 percent of the time.
“Since Americans watch more than four hours of TV per day, how safety behaviors are depicted on television can have tremendous influence on public perception of seatbelt and helmet use,” said Gerald McGwin, Ph.D., associate director for research at the Center for Injury Sciences and one of the study authors. Researchers also studied 21,670 television commercials that McGwin says present a safer depiction, with seatbelt use by 86 percent of individuals, motorcycle helmet use 100 percent and bike helmet use 84 percent.
CONNECTICUT BIKERS WANT TO RAISE THE BAR Connecticut State Reps Wilbur and Zalaski have co-sponsored a bill to repeal their 15-inch handlebar height law. CT statute # 14-80i(b) reads: “No person shall operate a motorcycle on a highway or in any parking area for ten or more motor vehicles if the motorcycle is equipped with handlebars that are more than fifteen inches in height above the uppermost portion of the seat when the seat is depressed by the weight of the operator.”
Rep. Wilber, who co-sponsored this bill with Rep Zalazki, had an OLR legislative report done that concluded that high handlebars are not a safety issue. The report also found that there has been a trend across the country to change the height restriction law with 16 states completely repealing the law. HB 6937 is currently under consideration in the Transportation Committee, and would completely repeal the handlebar law 14-80i(b), allowing Connecticut riders to decide for themselves what height their handlebars should be.
VIRGINIA RIDERS BESIDE THEMSELVES Virginia is only one of two states that specifically prohibit two motorcycles to ride two abreast in a traffic lane, but riders there are hoping to change that.
HB 1808 has passed out of Transportation Committee and bikers are urging their Delegates to support the bill when it comes up for a vote. They argue, among other things, that two motorcycles abreast in a traffic lane aids in making the motorcycles more visible to other traffic, and that in larger groups of motorcycles, riding two abreast keeps the overall length of the group shorter, and discourages other vehicles from dangerously cutting into the group – an issue motorcyclists riding in groups often face.
OH DEER! According to transportation officials, nearly 200 people are killed nationwide each year in crashes involving wildlife, mostly deer. The collisions cost drivers almost $1.5 billion each year in property damage, deaths and injuries.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) says they are trying to cut those numbers down. Flash lights and motion sensors are just a few of many solutions transportation experts are considering, and CDOT has put up a number of wildlife escape ramps on US 550 that allow wildlife to cross the road without getting stuck in traffic. CDOT says animals are getting more used to the ramps, even teaching their young how to use them.
On US 40, CDOT also installed a series of unusual looking reflectors to create flashes of light at 54 angles, horizontally and vertically, when a vehicle?s light hits them. According to CDOT, the reflected light bounces back and forth across the road, deterring deer and other wildlife from crossing. Drivers cannot see the light because of the way it?s reflected.
CDOT also hopes to install a motion detector system on US 160, that when triggered by a deer or other animal will cause a large light to go on to let an oncoming driver see there?s an animal on or near the road. The light may also startle the animal and keep it off of the road.
Meanwhile, an eight state research group met in Minnesota to brainstorm ideas for keeping wildlife off the road, and their leading proposal involves placing canisters of real or synthetic wolf and coyote urine near the roadways, hoping the scent of predators will cause the animals to flee.
INDONESIA INSTITUTES NEW ANTI-MOTORCYCLE LAWS New motorcycle lanes went into effect in Jakarta in January. Motorcyclists are now supposed to use the “slow” left lanes on city streets and police began getting tough on riders by issuing more than a thousand traffic tickets the first day to bikers not riding in the designated lanes. Trials are held on the spot and take about 5 minutes.
The head of traffic at the Jakarta Police, Sr. Comr. Djoko Susilo, said he hoped the rule would increase order in the streets and reduce the number of traffic accidents.
The left-lane rule is not the only new requirement for motorcyclists. They are also being told to keep their headlights on during the day, so that other vehicles can see them more easily.
The city is also considering banning them from entering main thoroughfares during peak hours, recommending that motorcyclists park their bikes and make use of the city’s busway instead.
Of 7.23 million vehicles in Jakarta, 64.1 percent, or 4.64 million, are motorcycles. The Jakarta Transportation Board has estimated that more than three million motorbikes are on the city’s roads every day, compared to 2.5 million cars. Out of the 4,206 road accidents reported last year, 3,826 involved motorcyclists.
But the government believes emissions tests may be the best way to curb motorcycle growth, so the Jakarta administration has been called upon to enforce stricter emissions testing for motorcycles to control the increasing number of motorbikes, up 15% from the previous year. The State Ministry for the Environment said motorbikes that fail to meet emissions standards could be banned from the city’s streets. 60% of the motorcycles tested in spot checks did not meet emissions standards set in 1993, so the ministry predicts that even more would fail the newer, tougher emission standard issued in 2006.
JESSE JAMES FINED BY CARB California air regulators have issued $271,250 in totalfines against Jesse James of West Coast Choppers, the co-producer and host of “Monster Garage” and “Motorcycle Mania,” saying that 50 of his custom-built choppers ran afoul of California’s clean-air rules.
California Air Resources Board officials said their inspectors found that the monster bikes sold between 1998 and 2005 did not have state certified emissions equipment on their exhaust and fuel systems, resulting in these bikes spewing hydrocarbons at up to 10 times the state limits. What they miss is the simple fact that motorcycles are used far less than cars, so in fact cars are putting out much more hazardous materials than almost any motorcycle.
Most states don’t even enforce EPA regs, and a number of legislative efforts are underway to afford the freedom to build any motorcycle from a wide open customs, replica motorcycle, right down to an EPA certified engine package so you can build a long distance motorcycle that’s EPA certified.
WEIRD NEWS: DRUNKEN DOUGHNUTS A Pontiac, MI motorcyclist gets sued, then sent to prison, for his actions that took place outside a bar earlier this year as he was ?doing doughnuts? in the parking lot when he struck and injured a woman who was standing outside the saloon.
Now he?ll be riding a prison van to Stateville Correctional Center, where he was sentenced to one year after pleading guilty to failure to report an accident with injury. He was also ordered to pay restitution, and faces a lawsuit from the injured woman who is seeking $50,000 each from the rider, the owner of the motorcycle and the saloon owner.

Harley-Davidson reported today that it has reached a tentative labor agreement with representatives of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 175 in York. The agreement is subject to membership ratification and a vote is expected to occur the week of Feb. 19. If approved, the agreement would end a strike by Harley-Davidson?s 2,800 unionized employees in York that began February 2.
The Company has not disclosed terms of the proposed agreement or the timing of a possible resumption of motorcycle production in York.

HORSE SMOKE OUT WEST 2–The HORSE Backstreet Choppers announces its Horse Smoke Out West 2. The dates are October 6 and 7, 2007, in Cottonwood, Arizona.
It’s an event. It’s the gathering of the chopper faithful. It’s beautiful women, vendors and beer, sure, but the Horse Smoke Out is about more than that. The Horse Smoke Out is about choppers. Every year builders – from professional builders to those bloody-knuckled guys (and ladies) that burn the midnight oil – build choppers they can call their own. GOOD NEWS FOR BIKE WEEK VISITORS– Florida Today newspaper has an article in it about tourism being down on the Space Coast. Well that is not the only place it is down and I do not know why that is, but I do know that when that happens room rates also go down to attract more visitors.
Well except for Daytona Beach, they look at the Bikers as the golden goose. Many of the visitors to Florida are finding lodging in Cocco Beach and other parts of the Space Coast. These places offer lodging at reasonable rates, plus fine dining and entertainment.
They are just a short ride to Daytona and the Biker Friendly places that you will want to attend. If you have not made your reservations yet you may want to consider this.
