BIKERNET NEWS FLASH–THE GOLDHAMMER AIR CLEANER, BETSY RIDES TO THE MOUNTAIN, LANE SPLITTING A STUDY UNFOLDS, IS R-MAX ALIVE?, THE STEALTH SHOP REPORT, SCREAMIN EAGLE RACE PROGRAM CHANGE AND THE RIGID FRAME DOCTRINE

cutie in guilty tee

Hey,

I want to hit on a couple of items quick. I survived Cincy, and it was a helluva show. Just goes to demonstrate how vibrant our small industry is. We’re cooking. On the legislative and EPA side the MRF has been working with the EPA for four years and instituted the 1-bike a lifetime custom completely unhampered by EPA regs for the individual and the 24-show bike exclusion for shops. The V-Twin group with the MIC has worked for 2 years to insure that EPA compatible engine packages will be available in the near future. Plus Senator John Brueggeman from Montana is introducing a bill to allow us to build replica bikes without EPA restrictions. That means that if you buy a new Panhead engine is will note 1948 on the cases and you’ll be able to build a bike under non-existant ’48 regs. That’s a state by state effort and will take the hard work of state rights organizations all across the country to pass. Also, this is another reason to join your local motorcycle rights organization. Many states are still not enforcing many EPA regs. You’re local guys will know and help you in the process of registering any bike.

That’s all good news, plus there’s an effort to insure the strength of our aftermarket through SEMA, the aftermarket Hot Rod association, which will add punch to our efforts, and SEMA will support state rights organizations. It’s all good, plus Bikernet is working to better our relationships with communities through our noise study. In the near future we’ll make our study available to the public. We need to be respectful about motorcycle noise in communities, but the public needs to know that in a very strong sense, loud pipes do save lives. Let’s hit the news:

BETSY’S BIGGEST BACKROAD RIDE YET-MOUNT EVEREST!– All around adventurer and world traveler, “Motorcycle Woman” Betsy Huelskamp, who writes a monthly column on the E-zine www.womenridersnow.com called “Backroads with Betsy” has just signed on to climb her biggest back road yet, Mount Everest. Betsy has just been accepted as the newest member of Discovery Channels 2007 spring Everest Expedition team, led by world- renowned expedition leader Russell Brice.

Last years expedition was an enormously popular 6 part docu-series entitled, “Everest: Beyond the Limit”. It featured ex Hells Angel Tim Medvetz, who missed his summit dream by just 100 meters, when he was forced to turn back due to an oxygen tank that was nearing empty. There were lost lives, lost fingers and toes, and some lost dreams while other realized their dreams. But some dreams were just put on hold. This season Tim will be returning for a second attempt, and will be joined by Russell, and a new team, including Betsy. But each climber has another mountain to hurdle before Everest, and that is raising the $42,000 plus expenses that it takes to put just one man (or woman) on top of the tallest mountain on the face of the earth. It is quite possibly the most difficult challenge a person could risk, physically mentally, and spiritually. But Betsy’s motto has always been, “if you are not living life on the edge, you are missing the view!”

So she is actively in need of sponsors, donations, advertising, gear, ideas, and suggestions!

BIKERNET’S LANE SPLITTING EXAMINATION–We wanted to know about the laws since we live in California and it’s legal here. We spoke to the President of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, Kirk Willard: “Several years back the then State Cooridnator of ABATE of CA saidit was more important to them to keep that in place than was the helmet lawissue. He claimed it saved untold lives to keep bikes moving and not besitting targets in CA traffic jams

“Interesting, in Europe it is called filtering and many countries allow it asbeing a positive safety tactic.

“I actually did it on a V-Rod in several European countries two summers agoand I thought it was quite useful. Over there carsactually pulled over a few feet as they saw bikes approaching. It did appear thatdrivers were very aware and concerned about bike.”

STEALTH BIKEWORKS BANNER

STEALTH BIKE SHOP INVESTIGATION–Man it has been cold around the Charlotte area and I for one am counting the days until Spring arrives. I am not a winter person!

Here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS the weather has pretty much frozen traffic in and out of the store. I keep telling people this is the time to do whatever needs to be done to their bikes. but I think that has fallen on deaf ears. Oh well spring is getting close.

You know something has been eating at me this past week. Somethings I always try to be and hold in high regard. I am talking about is being loyal. It seems that there is very little of that left nowadays. You do everything you can for people but no loyalty is ever shown. I see this everyday at the shop. People will sell you out for a dollar. If it is 50 cents cheaper down the road, then that is where they’re going, no matter how much anyone we’ve done for them. That’s part of this business that I really do not like.

This is a true story. A guy comes in, has me look a couple of parts up this week and I give him the price. I have written the part numbers down. When I give him the price he says, “I will look around and check prices.” I tore the number slip and throw it away.

“What did you do that for?” He said. I took the time to look the part numbers up, then prices and you tell me you will look somewhere else? My buddy, Lee Clemens, told the same story at the Easyriders bike show a couple of weeks earlier. He did the same thing. Thanks Lee for the lesson!

I really try to go beyond helping people at SBW but you have to draw a line. As every shop owner knows, you have to pay bills. It gets frustrating sometimes that people do not understand this.

STEALTH BIKE WORKS is an honest shop and we are just trying to make a living like everyone else. We are not a boutique, we are a get-down to business shop and maybe that does not appeal to some people, but that’s what we are about. No matter what price you give some people, it’s too high. With that being said, they will drive down the road and spend an extra $20/ hr. to have their bike worked on cheaply. I guess they like to spend that money.

This is a tough business and you earn every penny you get. Hey, be loyal to your local bike shop. He is there for you. If you think about it, he probably does a lot of little things that you don’t think about or put much value on. Like his home number or cell number in case of an emergency or break down. Like picking your bike up and delivering it for either no charge or a very small charge to cover gas expenses.

Most of us who run our own shops never opened them with the idea of getting rich, we did it because it is what we love to do, nothing more. Sometimes it gets real hard to keep the faith.

Until next week, RIDE!

OLD BRIDGE TOWNSHIP RACEWAY PARK’S KRAWIEC HIRED AS SECOND RIDER FOR SCREAMIN’ EAGLE RACING– MILWAUKEE (Feb. 8, 2007) – Eddie Krawiec has been named as the second rider on the Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson factory supported NHRA team, it was announced today.

Krawiec, 30, will join Andrew Hines, 23, on the team that is coming off a third consecutive NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle championship-winning season.

“This is something I’ve been after for a long time,” Krawiec said. “It has taken a day or two to realize that it’s actually happening. I’ve been around drag racing for a long time and I hope my past experience is going to help make the transition smooth.”

Krawiec, a former AMA Prostar series racer, has been a full-time employee of Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., since 1999 and has been the drag strip manager since 2001. He has made eight appearances at NHRA national events but has yet to qualify for final eliminations. He’s hoping that changes in a few weeks when the NHRA’s season opener for Pro Stock Motorcycle takes place at Gainesville Raceway, March 15-18.

“I didn’t have the benefit of the knowledge and equipment the Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team has until now,” Krawiec said. “I think that is going to make all the difference and I can’t wait to get to the first event and be part of this championship-winning team.”

Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said adding any new teammate can present its challenges, but it won’t be anything the crew isn’t prepared for.

“The team sees a lot of potential in bringing a relative unknown into the sport,” Paluso said. “Andrew has three championships, (crew chief) Matt Hines has three championships and (team owners) Terry Vance and Byron Hines bring decades of experience to the team. All of that is going to help Eddie become a more competitive rider. He has a big learning curve to attack, but we have the best team possible in place to make sure we have a solid two-bike team.”

Krawiec earned nine victories in 23 final rounds of AMA Prostar competition. His career-best E.T. in NHRA competition is a 7.254-second pass in Reading 2004 and his best speed is a 186.02 mph from Reading in 2005.

rigid shop

THE RIGID FRAME DOCTRINE QUESTIONED– I was always want to read peoples’ thoughts on rigid frame over suspensionframes. Being that this generation is mostly high tech, people tend to go with the best in whatever theyare buying cars, boats, bikes, etc. They end up wanting the best available to them, from comfort creaturesand high tech dodads. But when most people end up building a chopper or custom bike, rigid is king.

I find that very interesting. I personally have a ’93 Fat Boy which was my first American bike. I am startinga rigid WCC CFL 2-up-1 out, 38 degree rake build this year(when money permits).

As I looked more and moreat rigid frames they just appealed to me more. I guess it is the clean simple lines and that tough stance theyhave that made me like them more. And maybe too much now, ’cause that is all I freakin’ think is building thatdamn bike!

Well that’s it. I would think it would make an interesting article. Love to see what other peoplesay about this subject. Keep up the great work!

— Eric Fertig
Ericshd@aol.com

I’ll try to keep this brief since it’s news day, but here’s my rigid two cents. First, you’re right. You can’t beat the styling and the stance. Regarding new tech and suspension, I prefer a rigid over a lowered Softail. A rigid can ride well and handles better than a Softail with a few elements. First a rigid is generally 150 pounds lighter and narrower by a couple of inches for better turning and ground clearance. With a sprung seat, rubber pegs and grips and vibration damping in the bars they will handle and have more seat suspension that a lowered Softail. That’s my line and I’m sticking with it. BIKERNET FINALLY FINISHED NEWS ALERTS–VETERAN PLATES COMING TO ILLINOIS, HARLEY-DAVIDSON CUSTOM SEAT PROGRAM, BIKERNET METRIC GETS THUMBS UP, PRO MOD HYABUSA READY AND NEW BILL FOR FLORIDA.

Continued From Page 1

Bikernet 01-crop booth

The Assalt Weapan in the Accurate Engineering booth in Cicni.

IN FLORIDA, A NEW BILL BEFORE THE LEGISLATURE AIMS TO CHANGE LET THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME– Florida fines a driver speeding 6 mph over the limit $25. A driver caught speeding over 26 mph owes $150. The rest of the state’s traffic offenses follow the same theme: The severity of the crime determines the severity of the punishment. But a new bill before the state Legislature aims to change that.

Like speeders, there’s a big difference between a person driving after two drinks and a drunk who drives after 10. However, proposed legislation would force Florida’s judges to ignore that difference and punish drivers charged with driving just a sip over the limit with the same sentence given hard-core offenders: ignition interlocks.

Ignition interlocks are in-car breathalyzers that measure a driver’s blood-alcohol concentration (BAC). If a breath sample registers above a pre-set level, the engine will not start. These devices were originally developed for chronic drunken drivers with extreme alcohol levels. Already, many courts in Florida and across the nation successfully prescribe interlocks to keep alcohol abusers and repeat offenders off our roads. But now anti-alcohol activists are looking for a new target.

Proponents of the bill claim the measure will fight the drunken-driving problem. National statistics, though, prove that the problem has been reduced to a few individuals who severely abuse alcohol and still choose to drive. Mandating interlocks for first offenders doesn’t focus on those dangerous criminals.

With an average BAC of .19 percent — more than double the legal limit — the average drunken driver in a fatal crash has slurred speech, uncoordinated movements and delayed reactions. That’s the scenario many people imagine when we hear about drunken driving. In reality, it takes only one drink to get arrested for driving while intoxicated in many states. Even though all 50 states list 0.08 BAC as the legal limit, many law-enforcement agencies have adopted the notion favored by the Ohio State Highway Patrol: “There is no absolute ‘legal limit’ except ‘zero.’ “

The bar has been set so low that last year, police arrested drivers in Oregon and Florida for drunken driving even though they were completely sober. One arrestee was presumed drunk simply because he struggled with a field test of counting down from 1,030 in increments of 7.

Unlike those booked for other crimes, most innocent DWI suspects will never be able to remove the arrest from their records — even if they were never actually charged or convicted. (Keep in mind that drug users, wife beaters, and burglars can clear their names.)

States can already arrest us for driving after any alcohol consumption. So it’s rational to assume that many first-time offenders are not guilty of drunken driving, but of drinking and driving. Which is perfectly legal in all 50 states.

A couple of beers at a ball game, a glass of wine at an anniversary dinner, a wedding toast or two: Moderate drinking — not enough to render you “impaired,” let alone drunk — may soon be all it takes for drivers in the Sunshine State to be charged with drunken driving and saddled with an interlock in their car.

Other states have gone so far as to propose “universal” legislation — lobbying for mandatory interlocks in every car in the state. This kind of silliness may sound far off, but it’s closer than you may think.

Saab, Nissan, Toyota and other car manufacturers are already developing new interlock technology that could be manufactured as standard equipment. In early 2007, Nissan unveiled a concept car fit with odor sensors to “sniff” any alcohol in the cabin. A host of other equally intrusive prototypes — such as dashboard-mounted monitors and steering wheel and gear-shift detectors — can sense if you had Irish coffee for dessert.

This kind of zero tolerance is not anti-drunks. It’s anti-drinks.

It’s important to remember that drivers who speed or talk on their phones are more likely to crash than those who have 0.08 BAC. Though these reckless behaviors contribute to a growing death toll, Florida legislators are not clamoring to mandate speed-capping technology for first-time speeders.

If our representatives are serious about improving traffic safety, they should heed an age old saying: “Let the punishment fit the crime.”

BIKERNET METRIC BANNER 400
Click here to Check out BikernetMetric.com.

BIKERNETMETRIC.COM GET’S THUMBS UP– Those guys did a beautiful job on that otherwise fugly Yamaha 850 Special. I mean wow, pretty little scoot except for that faggoty red seat. With 0.1% exceptions seats should be black but that’s just my partly drunken opinion. Yes it’s 0800 and I am drinking some Sierra pale, but, I did work all fucking night at the paper mill. BTW, I bought some Tullamore Dew and we liked it.

I tried a new single malt Scotch called Laphroaig. Not sure how they pronounce it but it is really good. It’s gotta earthy taste to it. My buddy Rod an me liked it quite a bit ,especially with the tin of smoked oysters and Saltines. We got pretty liquored up that evening. Rod an me go back aways and our women like each other, so we have good time the four of us.

Got fucked up, shot off his black powder cannon, BBQ’d some rib-eye, drank up the ale and Tullamore and dabbled in the Laphroaig. Of course, we had to go to the bar and boogie to some live music down at Henri’s a few miles off. Rod was pissed we didn’t ride but hell, it’s been snowing off and on for weeks and raining the rest of the time so riding is ,well optional. Snowing like a bitch right now in fact, but the beer tastes good and it is the weekend.

Anyway, back at Henri’s we found a great band with a hot girl singer named Rae Anne. Slinky young thing but not too young. Red flowing curly long locks and some real hips on her I’ll tell ya. That gal can sing like the pro that she is. Good Gee-tars in the band ,too. We had a good time in the packed house, maybe too good cuz they cut us off after our first drink.

So we went home and cranked up the tunes and cracked open another bottle of hooch. The only bad thing that happened was when my girlfriend drove out the parking lot she mistook the curb for the ramp and while I was saying ,”Honey I don’t think…’ she powered the ’95 Tahoe over the curb onto the highway (known as “The Gauntlet” due to the heavy police patrol) and our friends from the city learned a little about a redneck night out in Longview,Washington. Actually I was proud of the way Kim handled launching the suv over the medium but our guests were bouncing their heads off the roof of the Tahoe like their seats were sprung. HAW!. Yeehaw.

So don’t feel too down about that gray day in Socal. We’d be glad just to get the garden hose thawed out, so we could wash the dead bugs off the scooter !

HARLEY-DAVIDSON LAUNCHES A NEW CUSTOM SEAT PROGRAM– Select Pattern, Inlay Material and Stitching Colors in 800 Possible Combinations.

MILWAUKEE (Jan. 29, 2008) – A new Custom Seat Program from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories lets a customer design a leather seat that is hand-built to their specifications. Available for the solo Brawler seat (P/N 52246-08, $399.95) or the two-up Sidekick seat (P/N 52193-08, $479.95) designed to fit most 2006-later FX Softail models and 2007-later FLSTF Fat Boy and FLSTSC Softail Springer Classic models, the Custom Seat Program offers 800 possible design and materials combinations, making it possible to create a seat that is truly individual.

The design process begins at the Custom Seat Program website, www.harley-davidson.com/customseat, where on-screen prompts help the customer select from two seat styles, eight stitching patterns including flames, skulls and tribal designs; eight inlay color options; and 10 stitching color options. When the design is complete, the customer takes a print-out of the seat design details to a local Harley-Davidson dealer, which will submit the Custom Seat Program order. The standard lead time for seat delivery is three weeks.

The low-profile Brawler and Sidekick seats selected for the Custom Seat Program are minimalist designs that hug the motorcycle. Each features a hand-laid fiberglass seat pan with a soft, felt-finish bottom that is scratch free. The seating surface is genuine leather, and the leather inlay options have a simulated exotic skin pattern. Each seat also has an embroidered Bar and Shield logo.

Unknown face
The unknown Chief Bikernet Surgeon from Mike Lichter.

FROM THE BIKERNET MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION, AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE– From John Hopkins.

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime.

3. When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic build-up.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body’s normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

WHAT CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg’s amino or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

Valentines
Don’t forget Valentines Day!

BIKERNET SCIENTIFIC SURVEY–Dr. Phil was conducting a therapy session with four young mothers and their small children.

“You all have obsessions,” he observed.

To the first mother he said, “You are so obsessed with eating you’ve even named your daughter Candy.”

He turned to the second mom: “Your obsession is with money. Again, it manifests itself in your child’s name, Penny.”

He turns to the third mom: “Your obsession is alcohol. This, too, manifests itself in your child’s name, Brandy.”

At this point, the fourth mother gets up, takes her little boy by the hand and whispers, “Come on Dick, we’re leaving.”

VETERAN’S PLATES IN ILLINOIS COMING– In the state of Illinois we have been working for 3+ years to get the SOS to approve veteran license plates. We finally met all of the requirements to get approval 6 months ago. At that time the SOS gave us a 90 day lead time before they would become available. November came and went so the Lt. Governors office was contacted. The SOS now says the plates will be available to veterans on or after April 1st of ’08. Up until 2 years ago MC plates were issued and renewed fiscally and expired on April 1st.

Taking that into consideration this means that a veteran will not be able to get these plates unless he or she is willing to pay twice in ’08 for the registration fee’s. First the renewal for the old plate, then the even larger registration fee a month later for the Vet plate. That is unless they are willing to run with expired plates for a month…

We are trying to plead our case to state government and were wondering if you had any advice to share. As well we have been trying to find out how many states offer veteran MC plates and hoping you might know the answer to that?

THERE YOU HAVE IT–Another killer news from the vast, unrelenting Bikernet staff. I reconsidered pounding the made overseas code again, but you get it. The bottom line is watching and taking heed of the Made In America slogan. Lean that way when you’re buying parts for your scooter, furniture and even at the grocery store. I know, I did it last night.

I don’t have a lot of extra cash to spend, but when it comes to the Code of the West we need to step up. Hell, look at what we pay for a tank of gas. If we all slowed down on gas consumption and used that coin to invest in more American made products, maybe the goddamn over inflated gas prices would come down.

If only we could ride more and drive less.

CARROLL SHELBY AND RUCKER PERFORMANCE TOBUILD THE ULTIMATE AMERICAN PERFORMANCE MOTORCYCLE–LAS VEGAS – February 1, 2007 – Shelby Automobiles, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc., (CSBI.PK) and Rucker Performance will unveil a limited production Shelby motorcycle at the Cincinnati V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati, Ohio, on February 2, 2007. This incredible high performance American motorcycle, which rivals the power to weight ratio of the famed Shelby Cobra 427 S/C, was developed in partnership between the two companies and will be built by Rucker Performance, under license by Carroll Shelby Licensing, Inc. Shelby Automobiles Inc., manufactures high performance Shelby vehicles, including the new 2007 Ford Shelby GT, under the guidance of the legendary Carroll Shelby. Rucker Performance is a leading designer and manufacturer of custom American muscle production motorcycles.

“It’s no secret that stuffing a powerful American motor into a lightweight chassis has been my formula for success,” noted Carroll Shelby, CEO of Shelby Automobiles. “Working with Bill Rucker and his team, we’ve taken this same approach on the new Shelby motorcycle. My team at Shelby Automobiles has worked closely with Rucker Performance to create a motorcycle that offers the same thrill as driving my Cobra.”

Fellow Texan Bill Rucker is famous for building spectacular two wheeled motorcycles that are among the most exciting vehicles in the world. He is Founder and CEO of Rucker Performance, a manufacturer of high performance American muscle and chopper motorcycles. Rucker is a designer, builder and fabricator, bringing entrepreneurial experience and more than 30 years of management success in motorcycle manufacturing, drag racing and hot rods to the company. Over the years, the Rucker name became synonymous with quality, technological innovation and extensive customization.

“We’re going to build the ultimate American high performance motorcycle,” said Bill Rucker, President of Rucker Performance. “From the initial design to the innovation of new parts, every aspect of this motorcycle was created with that goal in mind. It’ll be a lightweight, fire-breathing ride that’s as inspiring as the four wheeled vehicles that wear the Shelby name.”

The specs of this pro-stock sytle bike will make any enthusiast’s heart beat faster. Racing-style front forks and a high performance braking system with ceramic brake rotors will make it nimble, while the Pingel 1-6 electric shifting system and air ride suspension will make it comfortable. To keep the bike svelte, the upper body and wheels will be built of carbon fiber while Superform will create the aluminum body panels.

The heart of the powerhouse is a new S&S X-Wedge 128 c.i.d. engine with closed loop VFI fuel injection that will churn out an astounding 150 HP. Rucker Performance is one of only five manufacturers to have access to the powerful new engine and one of the first applications will be in the new Shelby motorcycle.

Each “Shelby” motorcycle can be custom painted according to the owner’s personal tastes and will include a special edition logo. In addition, a complete line of “Shelby” merchandise including apparel, accessories and limited edition collector’s items will be available. Production of the “Shelby” will begin in 2007 and will include up to 25 motorcycles that will be available for purchase by the third quarter of this year. Production of a second round of bikes will begin in the fall of 2007.

“While Porsche has designed bicycles and BMW snowboards, Carroll’s been looking for an opportunity to apply our 40 years of experience to a world class motorcycle program,” added Amy Boylan, Shelby Automobiles Inc., president. “He’s ridden motorcycles most of his life, so we created a partnership with a manufacturer that meets the high performance standards associated with the Shelby name. This project demonstrates the potential for design and engineering innovation available at Shelby Automobiles. We look forward to launching this motorcycle and watching yet another Shelby product move to the front of the pack.”

CINCY WRAP, NEXT DAYTONA–Damn time flies. Last weekend I judged the bikes at the Grand Nationals Show in Pomona, with Jim Waggaman. There were about 50 and some very cool rides. Of course they had classification criteria that screwed with some of the placement, so we suggested new categories.

bobber
Talk about a classic.

Sinners
This Chopper Dave, Sinner, creation was the only true bobber, but that’s a tough category.

So I’m packing to head to Cincy tonight. Vendors are up and so is the dealer attendance number. People keep sniveling about the industry, but I’m a goddamn optimist. I think this is going to be a helluva year in many respects.

Triumphmotor
This guy had his own classification guaranteeing a win and he sniveled.

I’ll report more upon my return from the chilly Cincy downtown, once I sober up. Rogue promised a fifth of Jack. Next week we have another bike feature headed in from Europe and Easyriders show coverage. I have several articles hanging out about long rides that I need to be attend to. I know, I’m behind, but scrambling to keep up with the action in the industry.

Girls

We’re building a bobber in the shop for a San Pedro kid who helps out around the building. Our water heater took a shit the other day and Jeremiah came to the rescue. It’s going to be a helluva cool rigid Shovel. I’ll show you a progress report in the next couple of weeks. The bungs at the head of the news were destined for his Shovel.

fire911

There’s been a hiccup in our Bonneville frame building, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll have a roller in the next couple of weeks. Departure Bike Works sent us a couple of old 45 pistons and John Van Trump, now working for Ross Pistons, is on the case. We may actually have the Bonne-belle flathead completed for Bonneville this year.

So goddamnit, there you have it for this week. The girls will handle the Sunday Post and Johnny White is editing a Girl of Bikernet feature for the Cantina. Rock ‘n’ Roll.

ABATE OF COLORADO FIGHTS HOUSE BILL 07-1117 Minors Mandatory Motorcycle Helmet Use– HB-1117 is titled as: “Concerning The Requirement That A Protective Helmet Be Worn By A Person Under Eighteen Years Of Age During The Operation Of Certain Motor Vehicles”, introduced in the House 01/15/2007 ABATE of Colorado has always supported Freedom of Choice and the discretion of the motorcyclist as to the wearing of helmets, and opposition to outright regulation – this may also include the issue of parental guidance authority for risk management for children/minors. As knowledge of the introduction of the bill has become further known among motorcyclists, a great deal of the sentiment proffered has been “Well, that’s just for the kids and doesn’t affect me!”

This first thinking represents flawed evaluation; consider the following:

Identifying the Threat:1) This bill would create a NEW subsection in the Colorado Revised Statutes – one that DOES NOT EXIST NOW: 42-4-1502 (4.5) Riding on Motorcycles – protective helmet. The “protective helmet” subsection creates a regulatory action title, which (while the language under the subsection refers only to minors at this time) opens the door for expansion, amendment, and modification to the extent of becoming a “universal, all-rider” mandatory helmet law in the future.

2) This bill also requires mandatory helmet use, by minors, for motorized bicycles by creating a NEW subsection under C.R.S. 42-4-109 (6.5)

3) Bill requires DOT-compliant helmets under FMVSS 218

4) This bill represents an incremental step for mandatory helmet use

5) This bill, beyond its’ initial scope, could be amended ANYTIME during committee hearings or the floor voting process, to further include adults.

What happens and what is a likely scenario? Concerned citizens/the public and organizations/lobbyists may testify or comment before the committee, either in support of or in opposition to the bill. Considering that it is known at the capitol that motorcyclists have had an historically strong lobby against helmet laws, it is probable that Ms. Primavera knows this through her colleagues and has “lined up” considerable support and testimony for her bill. This may include, but is not limited to, representatives of the Brain Injury Center, Children’s Hospital, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, emergency personnel and trauma doctors, medical cost factors, Medicare cost factors (for the uninsured), tales of head injuries sustained by youngsters and appearances by the same, as well as other interested “safety” advocates – all of which is designed to influence the committee for a “pass” vote.

Assuming certain implications – Opposition to the bill in its entirety: A course of argument and action:

The bill sponsor and the State must clearly SUBSTANTIATE the State’s compelling interest and need, on a scale of critical-mass, to implement a regulatory action that upstages and subrogates the authority of parental teaching, education, and guidance of their children, to the State?

a. Seek justifications, of scale, requiring regulation, i.e. – motorcycling/motor-driven cycle roadway injuries to minor riders
b. Education is superior to regulation to achieve safety goals
c. Motorcycling community supports helmet use, but opposes government mandate
d. Voluntary helmet usage percentages have increased in the Western states (refer to NHTSA doc.)

The best time and place to kill a bill is in committee. Motorcyclists should, in large numbers, input their thoughts on this bill. Failure to do so represents Apathy, a Lack of Will and Resolve – it will be perceived as such in the Colorado legislature and remembered?

ATTENTION FELLOW VIRGINIA FREEDOM FIGHTERS– “Efforts to repeal a state law requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets [in Virginia] are taking a new twist this year. Rather than take the helmet law off the books, opponents are trying to water it down.

HB2585 would allow bikers to forgo helmets on state scenic highways. On all other roads, police would be banned from stopping bikers for not wearing helmets.

They could only cite a cyclist for not wearing a helmet if he or she was stopped for another driving offense, such as speeding.

HB3077 would reduce the maximum $250 penalty for driving without a helmet to$25 and make it a civil offense that does not assess demerit points against the cyclist’s driving record.”

Virginia is requesting your out of state help with HB 2585 (Allows riders the choice of whether or not to wear a helmet on roads designated Virginia Scenic Byways). Full text of the bill can be found here: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?071+ful+HB2585

Please write our Delegates and let them know that you would spend your tourism in Virginia if allowed to choose whether or not to wear a helmet on Virginia’s beautiful scenic Byways. As always, please be courteous – we are looking pretty good on this bill, but feel the extra incentive of tourism dollars will be beneficial.

MORE ON ASSALT WEAPAN ATTEMPT BY BIKERNET– It sounds like you are planning to run the Pan in altered and run without a faring, but you might consider a faring and bodywork to run APS too. A few years ago Scott Guthrie ran several back to back runs on a 200 mph Suzuki Hayabusa with and without the faring and body work at the Maxton mile. They discovered the bodywork was worth 14 mph at Maxton, so it should be worth even more at Bonneville.

Airtech built sharp body for Wink Eller’s 200 mph Bonneville Harley. It’s on the Airtech website www.airtech-streamlining.com under the harley tab. Might be worth a look.

AVON TYRE QUESTION OF THE WEEK–What about fix-O-Flat sprays. Is it cool? Will it throw a tire out of balance. What about that green mung tire fix?

Avon does not recommend the use of any liquid material to repair or prevent flats. This can cause degradation of the inner liner along with corrosion to the wheel. It is also nasty stuff for the dealer to have to clean off during a tire change. This type of temporary repair can adversely affect the tire’s material layers and hide damage to the tire caused by a nail or other object. And most importantly the use of these products can create a heavy spot where it adheres to the inner liner of the tire and throw the tire “out of balance” which will cause handling problems. This could even cause tire failure and an accident if the sealant fails.

RMD ROLLS OUT BIG DOG PARTS–RMD Billet Rolls Out Big Dog Parts, SG2800 Billet Girder, Perimeter Brake Rotors and Modular Grips at Cincinnati V-Twin Expo

RMD Billet has been very busy this past year improving its product offerings and making high-end, custom billet components. They will be launching several new products in Cincinnati, including 3-piece billet wheels, 3-inch open belt drives for Big Dogs, an aluminum girder front-end, modular handgrips and aluminum perimeter brake rotors.

RMD Billet is now offering its signature, 3-piece wheels with matching pulleys and rotors to replace OEM components on most Big Dog Motorcycles. They are also offering a 3-inch, open belt drive to replace the stock, enclosed primary on all Big Dog Motrocycles. These new components will enhance any Big Dog, making it look more like a one-off custom.

RMD Billet has made several alliances this year, alliances that have paid off in groundbreaking products like the SG2800, girder front-end, a product that couples the simplistic girder idea with technologically advanced, extruded billet aluminum and a Penske shock. This girder front-end of tomorrow was designed over the course of a year by Leo DiOrio and provides superior performance and handling, in addition to being a modern design upgrade for any high-end custom bike. RMD Billet has also aligned themselves with Doug Keim, who has designed custom billet knurled hand grips in several combinations of color and end cap styles. These are truly a new way of looking at grips.

Sport bikes have utilized perimeter brakes for several years because they are lighter and more advanced than traditional, clunky steel brake rotors. RMD Billet has taken perimeter brakes a step further and created an aluminum perimeter rotor coated with ceramic, a design that provides exceptional stopping power when coupled with the RMD Billet brake caliper. These perimeter brake rotors can be easily mounted to any RMD Billet 3-Piece wheel, and the rear rotor can be mounted inboard to give the rear wheel a sanitary look. To see these cool new products and more, stop by booth # 2437 at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati.

MOTORBOOK INTERNATIONAL FOURTH BOOK ON PAINTING BY JOANN BORTLES–As for Book 4, “How to Master Airbrush Techniques,” it is a very comprehensive book for learning to airbrush. It includes very detailed chapters on various kinds of airbrushes, paints and tools. There are very simple exercises for the beginner, including a very cool trick to turn a photo into a very neat painting. Unlike my other books, this one is all airbrush. So I had room to get very thorough with the instructions. One chapter is completely devoted to learning to use layers in create dimension. Airbrushing fur is another chapter chapter. How to airbrush feathers is another. It shows various ways to airbush a surface to look like bent metal. It has the best chapter yet for airbrushing people, there are 20 photos showing how to airbrush a face.

There is even a chapter on how to create a vector drawing, then set up and use a plotter. Then a chapter where I use plotter made stencils to airbrush a guitar. But one of the highlights is the Troubleshooting chapter. It deals with just about every airbrushing problem you can think of. Ever airbrush a painting, then part of the painting get damaged? This book shows exactly how to fix it.

I also looked at all the other airbrush books and what they were lacking. I wrote this book to be different from all the others out there, as most people have several books, so why buy another one that is like all the others? This book will make a great companion to the airbrush books most people already have.

Plus this book deals with “real world” airbrushing, where things go wrong. When I was writing the book, I looked at the airbrushing message boards and listened to the things people needed answers to. Then I wrote the book to deal with those problems. Ever pick up your airbrush and get so frustrated you can’t stand it? Then this is the book for you. It shows how to handle the frustrating situations that arise and how to keep from getting in those situations. It is 197 pages of a book you will keep referring to again and again.

AUSTRALIAN BIKE CLUB TASK FORCE ESTABLISHED–AUSTRALIA’S national law enforcement agency has established a taskforce to target outlaw motorcycle gangs amid mounting concern about expanding memberships and their growing involvement in organized crime, including arms trafficking.

The Australian Crime Commission’s board approved the establishment of the taskforce after an intelligence operation detected a significant expansion in the activities of outlaw motorcycle gangs in 2005-06.

Intelligence revealed that 26 new chapters of 10 gangs were established in six states and territories.

This brought the total of “fully patched” members of the 35 clubs operating in Australia to 3500. This figure “expands significantly” when nominees, prospective members and associates are taken into account, according to the ACC.

The gangs were becoming “more sophisticated and dynamic” and operating across state borders.

The ACC says outlaw motorcycle clubs are involved in a wide range of criminal activities including murder, drug manufacturing and trafficking, firearms trafficking, extortion, prostitution, robbery, theft, fraud, money laundering and re-birthing of stolen motor vehicles.

But the clubs were able to quickly adapt to exploit any new opportunities to maximise profits from crime.

“(Outlaw motorcycle gangs) target illicit commodities that are as lucrative as possible at the time,” the ACC’s chief executive officer Alastair Milroy said. “They will diversify into other areas of criminal activity if there is profit to be made.”

Earlier this month The Australian revealed a member of Australia’s biggest outlaw motorcycle gang, the Rebels, was suspected of being at the centre of the criminal network involved in the theft and sale of Australian Defence Force shoulder-fired rocket launchers.

And a secret police intelligence document revealed Defence officials knew almost a decade ago that staff involved in stealing and rebirthing weapons from the ADF’s national storage distribution centre, southwest of Sydney, “were in collusion with outlaw motorcycle gangs”.

According to the ACC, there is evidence that some gangs are generating funds through serious fraud and deception to finance their “primary” criminal activities, such as drug manufacturing and trafficking.

Mr Milroy said the commission was concerned about the recent expansion of motorcycle gangs. The taskforce had been established to “better guide national investigative and policy action”.

Mr Milroy declined to comment “for operational reasons” on whether it had gathered evidence showing individual gangs, which in the past had been involved in violent clashes, were beginning to co-operate and co-ordinate their activities.

He also declined to comment on whether the clubs had active criminal links with overseas chapters.

But he said “excellent co-operation” between state law enforcement agencies was combating any attempts by motorcycle gangs to make investigations into their activities more difficult by operating across state borders.

“This co-operation includes the sharing of operational and strategic intelligence relating to the criminal activities of (motorcycle gangs), which minimises the impact of any intentional attempt to avoid law enforcement targeting,” he said.

Motorcycle gangs were “closed and insular in nature to avoid detection” like other organised crime groups.

According to ACC figures there are now 18 outlaw motorcycle club operating in NSW, 17 in Victoria, 11 in Queensland, eight in South Australia, six in Western Australia, four in Tasmania, three in the Northern Territory and two in the ACT.

The ACC revealed in its annual report released last month that intelligence it provided to Queensland police prevented a violent clash between the Rebels and the Bandidos.

According to a UN Office on Drugs and Crime report released in 2002, there were about 7000 associate members of outlaw motorcycle gangs in Australia.By Gary Hughes

BONNEVILLE ASSALT WEAPAN SUGGESTION–Bandit, I see you got your wheels for the Pan. You might want to consider a setof ceramic wheel bearings. Check with Dave at World Wide Bearings, 1-800-575-3220. They are used in pro stock drag bikes and many LSR bikes.

I have heard of4 horsepower gains at the rear wheel because of less parasitic loss through thedrivetrain. I installed a set on my bike and didn’t do any dyno testing but thebike is much easier to roll around. Might be worth a look.

Good luck inSeptember.

st fanc. tank

THIS WEEK AT CHOPPER HIGH-TANK WORKS– Team Chopper from St. Francis High School in Minnesota are building two tanks for their chopper. They are stretching a donated tank in case the one they fabricate isn’t done on time or something happens where they can’t use it.

The bike debut will be at the annual Donnie Smith Bike Show in St. Paul. Last years’ chopper won the peoples choice award in the 2006 Donnie Smith High School Chopper Class Challenge.

The start of the week found the crew making sheet metal pieces to weld to the frame to give the tank the flowing look as if it is a part of the frame. This year we want it to have to look of the one piece flowing design with the durability of rubber mounts.

The tank is going to have spikes down the center and they will face out horizontally. They have been machined to about three inches long with a tapered from one inch to zero. Next order of business? Make a fixture that will hold them so they can be drilled and tapped. It’s all hands on deck with the majority of the crew working on the spikes, the tank, getting parts or building the spike fixture.

“I have to hand it to Brent Stavig and the administration of St. Francis High School,” said Bob Osias, Metric Thunder Owner. “They found the switch to turn the students on and create a real world environment where the students can perform, compete and succeed.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON DISAPPOINTED WITH UNION VOTE– York, Pa., February 1, 2007 — Harley-Davidson Motor Company expressed disappointment at the union vote yesterday that rejected a proposed new collective bargaining agreement for employees and authorized a strike at its final assembly operations in York, Pa. A strike at the facility is expected to occur as early as 12:01 a.m. February 2, when the current contract expires.

As a result of the pending strike, production of Touring and Softail motorcycles at Harley-Davidson’s operations in York has been suspended.

“We are obviously disappointed by the union’s decision,” said Fred Gates, General Manager of Harley-Davidson’s operations in York. “The proposed contract was structured to help manage future costs that could be detrimental to our business over the long term,” Gates said. “While Harley-Davidson is a strong company today, we don’t want to find ourselves in ten years in the same position that the Detroit auto industry is in now.”

The proposed contract provided for a four percent wage increase in each of the three contract years. Two percent of the increase was dependent on the union accepting the Company’s salaried health care plan or another plan that would save the Company an equal amount of money. The Company’s union employees in York currently pay no premium for health insurance coverage and minimal out of pocket costs.

The proposal would have doubled the Company’s 401(k) contribution match and would have provided a special monthly retirement supplement for certain employees who retire during the contract period. The proposal also would have instituted a second-tier wage and benefit plan for new employees hired after February 2, 2007.

For example, under the two-tier structure, new assembly worker hires would have earned $18.25 per hour in the first year of the contract, compared to $20.78 per hour for current assembly workers in the first year of the contract.

Harley-Davidson production employees in York are represented by International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 175.

KEVIN RETURNS TO THE RACE TRACK DURING DAYTONA BIKE WEEK–After three years hooked up to a dialysis machine and finally a kidney transplant, from my son, last September I’m able to go back to the crazy world of crashing motorcycles. For what I think is about the eighteenth Bike Week we’re going to be at New Smyrna Speedway Friday, March 9th playing to a packed house once again.

Since I got sick no one has seen the show in three years. It should be big. The reason I’m writing is that I always put on the discount flyers (125,000 of them) See Us On Bikernet.com. With your permission I’d like to continue that tradition and I’ll fax you one of the coupons so you can see what it looks like.

You know if you show up there I always save a bike for you to ride in the Demo.

HELLS-A-COP-IN’–New York Post, NY – January 30, 2007 — Cops yesterday raided the Hells Angels clubhouse in Manhattan and took at least one person into custody as they investigated the vicious beating of a woman there.

“Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Help me! Help me!” the woman wailed as she lay on the sidewalk near the biker club’s hangout at 77 E. Third St. on Sunday night, witnesses said.

“She was holding her head. It was bleeding all over. She was out of it. She was inebriated,” said witness David Hernandez, who described her as a “5-foot-4, brunette biker chick.”

Responding cops soon after tried to enter the East Village clubhouse – where a number of people live in upstairs apartments. But people inside rebuffed them, telling police to “get a warrant,” cops said.

A search warrant was obtained late yesterday afternoon, after dozens of officers swarmed East Third Street between First and Second avenues and brought in an Emergency Service Unit truck, a hostage-negotiation truck, patrol cars and a helicopter as they prepared for the raid.

The assault on the woman occurred at about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, police said. The victim – whose identity was unknown to cops – had been drinking at a bar, sources said. After leaving that bar, the woman, said to be in her 40s, walked to the Hells Angels clubhouse and knocked on the front door.

Cops suspect someone at the clubhouse let her inside, the sources said. But then she was brought back to the front door, where someone threw her into the street, a witness told cops.

“A woman was screaming bloody murder,” said Lori Lee, an area resident. “There was a big commotion and a lot of yelling.”

Cops said the victim, whose face and head had been badly beaten, was unconscious when they found her in front of 81 E. Third St.She was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors put her into a medically induced coma. Her condition was upgraded to serious.

Ron Kuby, a lawyer for Hells Angels members, sniped about the police’s heavy-handed response, saying, “This display has been a splendid opportunity for the NYPD to show off their expensive hardware . . . they’ve turned Third Street into Fallujah.”

In 1998, cops raided the same clubhouse to investigate another alleged assault.A year later, the city paid $450,000 to seven Hells Angels and two girlfriends to settle a lawsuit that claimed cops exceeded the scope of their warrant by going upstairs and into the apartments to search and arrest people.

STEALTH BIKEWORKS BANNER

STEALTH BIKE WORKS INVESTIGATE CHAROLETTE ER BIKE SHOW–Last weekend we were at the Easyriders Bike Show here in Charlotte. It was a good break from winter. For me, I have to be honest and this is just my opinion but most of the bikes in the show are over done. By that I mean over chromed, over painted, over the top for me, but that’s okay, to each his own. I really liked a few of the old school bikes, a couple of very cool Panheads, and a couple of sharp Knuckleheads.

Thing around STEALTH BIKE WORKS have slowed the past couple of weeks but talking to other shops they report the same thing. So I guess we are all looking forward to spring. One of the highlights of the show for me was geting to talk to my friend Lee Clemens from Departure Bike Works in Richmond, Va. Lee and Andrew displayed their Build-Off bike. You can see the outcome on the Learning Channel, March 15th at 10 p.m.

We got the paint back this week from Rusty for our FXR. He did a GREAT job on the sheet metal. I thought the gas tank was beyond repair. After Rusty finished with it, it is brand new again. The old tank previously had a fight with a baseball bat and lost. The FXR is an ’86 model that is getting a lot of TLC at SBW. It belongs to a guy who has been down on his luck and recently re-gained his freedom. He is a stand up guy who keeps his word. That’s what I like about Tony, if he tells you he is going to do something it is done. The way it should be.

So even though things are slow right now and the weather has turned cold, we have a lot planned for the upcoming months. Let’s see, The Horse Smoke-Out, The Run For Breath, All the local Poker Runs, Bike Nights and the list goes on. Man winter is flying by just thinking about all of this!

Until next week, RIDE!

If your’re wondering how Bikernet survives financially, here’s the revealing answer. At night we open the Bung Factory and go to work. Since we avoid competing with Todd’s Cycle sharp selection of fender rails and bungs and the famous BungKing.com guys, we can only make odd ball stuff. Factory orders have soared to three bungs a week.

We have also developed a high tech way of welding tabs to frames and making absolutely sure they’re level. I’m blown away by our progress.

Maybe next year we’ll be able to afford a booth in Cincy. Let’s hit the news:

SIX NEW BIKER BUILD-OFF TO PREMIER ON THE LEARNING CHANNEL, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH AT 10 P.M.–In its fifth season Biker Build Off returns with six brand new shows which will air on TLC’s “Turbo Thursdays”. The first episode will premier on Thursday, February 8th, 2007 with five more episodes on each Thursday after. The first new BBO pits Gard Hollinger of L.A. County Choprods, Marina del Rey, CA against Jason Hart of Chop Smiths, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Each artist designs and fabricates a one-of-a-kind, street legal drag bike in just two weeks. Then they meet on Dead Horse Point in Moab, Utah to ride to Las Vegas, Nevada where they go head-to-head drag race for the Biker Build Off trophy.

The second hour which premiers February 15th will feature Chica of Chica Custom Cycles, Huntington Beach, CA going head-to-head with Michael Barragan of Evil Spirit Engineering, Glendale, CA. Chica designs and fabricates a stretched, 60’s style, laid back cruiser and Michael, a post industrial, futuristic ghetto sled. The two artists meet in Ft. Worth, Texas and ride side by side to the Lone Star Rally in Galveston where thousands vote for the custom motorcycle they like the best.

BBO show number three airing February 22nd will pit Trevelen of Super Co. Customs, Los Angeles, CA against Paul Cox and Keino of the Indian Larry Legacy, Brooklyn, N.Y. Trevelen builds an homage to the Indian Motorcycles of the 40’s and Paul and Keino fabricate an old school, totally hand built, elegantly functional, Indian Larry style bike. Trevelen meets Paul and Keino in Monument Valley, Arizona to ride 800 miles due south to the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

The fourth brand new BBO airing on March 1st will feature Brian Fuller of Fuller Hot Rods, Atlanta, GA. going head-to-head with Greg Westbury of Westbury Handcrafted Motorcycles, Concord, CA. Brian using mostly Buell parts in a frame of his own design fabricates a modern, high back tire racer. While Greg builds a hot rod motorcycle on a frame reminiscent of a vintage Schwinn. The two artists ride side by side ending at the Northeast Motorcycle Expo in Hartford, Connecticut where the people decide on which bike will take home the trophy.

HughKIng
Hugh King on his own sled.

In BBO number five airing on March 8th Dawn Norakas of Stinger Custom Cycles, Cedar City, Utah will build off against Scott Webster of Leroy Thompson Choppers, Mentor, Ohio. Dawn, who is BBO’s second female builder, designs and fabricates an elegant, gleaming, blue and silver, low slung chopper while Scott makes an industrial, hard core homage to “Road Warrior.” The two artists meet on a bluff overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and ride south through heavy rains to the Easyriders Pomona California Bike Show.

Andrew

Watch for Andrew and the Departure Bike Works episode on March 15, the day before Bandit’s Birthday. Watch Andrew race a jap bike at the drags. Check the feature on the Home Page.

The sixth episode of the new BBO series airing on March 15th will feature Andrew Williams of Departure Bike Works, Richmond, VA going mano-a-mano with James Compton, Boerne, Texas. Andrew builds a Harley based, street legal dragster while James builds a four stacked, Suzuki powered, light weight drag bike dubbed”Crusher II” . EVEREST DREAM NOT LAID TO REST– Hollywood bike customizer Tim Wayne Medvetz was recently featured in the Discovery Channels series “Everest: Beyond the Limit”. Each edge of your seat episode chronicles the journey of a group of vastly different men. Each are from different countries, and walks of lives, but share one common vision. They want to stand on top of the worlds tallest mountain. Each has their own personal obstacles to overcome, as they encounter mental and physical challenges attempting to achieve one of the most difficult measures of human endurance.

Tim Medvetz was involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident the night before one of the worst days our country has ever known, 9/11. As a result, he has metal parts throughout his body, including his skull, back, knee, and foot. Although he has spent much time rehabilitating and training, his 6’5″ frame and 250lb. body mass make him better equip for the game of golf as his doctor has strongly suggested. Against all of those odds, Tim sold everything he owned including his Harley Davidson to make that first Everest attempt. He fell just 100 meters short of the summit, and says he was so close he could have thrown a rock and hit it. But after encountering many obstacles on the way up, his oxygen level was so low that he only had enough remaining to get him back to camp. Another 100 meters may seem short in distance, but it could still mean several hours of time and oxygen. He knows in his heart he could have made the summit. But he realizes that his body would still be sitting on that summit, frozen solid, with an oxygen tank that read zero. He was forced to listen to the wisdom of his expedition leader Russell Brice, and begin his descent. Tim agreed not to give up, but to put his dream of that summit on hold.

Now one year later, and 30 lbs. lighter, Tim has not put his dream of the summit Everest, to rest. He is a man determined to finish what he has begun. The Discovery Channel is going to film another six episodes of Tim’s return and second attempt. North Face has agreed to sponsor him by providing him with his necessary gear. Russell Brice and his staff are eager and willing to give him the best chance to make his summit possible. But Tim still has to come up with the $42,000 it takes to put just one man on the top of that mountain, so he needs your help! Bikers are known for coming to the aid of another biker in need, and he needs help to make this monumental dream a reality. He needs donations, sponsors, fundraisers, advertising, or any other ideas that might help him achieve his goal.

To help or learn more about Tim’s mission, go towww.highwaytoeverest.com. And look for the journey on the Discovery Channel!

RICH PHILLIPS OF BIKER SADDLES– known for his incredible custom leather seats and pans, built a custom, compact, board track racer style bike he will be debuting in Cincinnati. Rich designed and fabricated this cool bike, named the Early Bird, entirely himself. You may have heard of Rich Phillip’s when he did the leatherwork for the Shovelhead Kill Machine, Twisted Chopper’s winning Discovery Channel Build Off bike. The most impressive thing about this new bike is the detail. From the early style cloth-wrapped wiring harness to the copper oil lines, this bike is a hybrid of design elements from the future and past, including Rich’s new air shock seat suspension system.

He will also be debuting a number of new products, handlebars for Springer front ends, a leaf-spring front end of his own design, and a limited supply of custom frames, similar to the Early Bird frame. All the products Rich will be debuting at Cincinnati are made with the same attention to detail in the Early Bird. The handlebars are drag style bars utilizing brass or aluminum, bullet shaped caps to hide handlebar-mounting bolts and are designed specifically for Springer Front ends, particularly Harley-Davidson, Paugcho or DNA. These bars are sold ready to ship, but can be configured to custom dimensions upon request. They are sold in raw steel, or powder coated for a small up-charge.

r. phillips 2

Rich is also offering a leaf-spring front end of his own design, a nice addition to any retro-styled bobber or chopper, available in 20″or 22″. He will also custom build them up to 4-inches over in length, but only upon special request. Like the handlebars, the front ends will be sold in raw steel, or powder coated for a small up-charge.

Rich Phillips will be available for interviews in Cincinnati, in booth #4207, and the Early Bird will be present for photographs. He will also have examples of all his products. Please let me know if you have any questions about this very cool bike or any of the above products, or if you need any images.

chalk art

BIKERNET REACHES A NEW CULTURAL LEVEL–More chalk drawings from Julian Beever. Scroll down slowly and stop at each new frame. Incredible!!!!! Julian Beever is an English artist who’s famous for his art on the pavement of England, France, Germany, USA, Australia and Belgium. Beever gives to his drawings an amazing 3D illusion.

THE FANTASTIC ART OF LARRY GROSSMAN– All of the elements in my art come from photos I have shot over the years. Vic’s Highway 40, featured in this picture is located in Reno on 4th St, and is actually called Abby’s (www.abbyshighway40.com). In addition to changing the name, I replaced the sky with a more dramatic one, and relocated the Morris Hotel (actually located two blocks away) and renamed it the Morrison Hotel, after a famous Doors album. On the hotel door is a sign which reads “You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave” from the Eagles song.

All of the bikes in the picture are a combination of parts that I put together (I dunno, does that qualify me as a bike builder?), as is the guy in the foreground, who’s arms and legs belong to one guy, and who’s head belongs to my good friend Tony Wood, who works for George Barris.

I added the tattoos, the helmet, and the vest with the “colors”, which I made myself for an x-rated film (an artful one) that I wrote, produced, and directed called “The Big Sleeze” back in 1975. On the back of the vest it reads “Krotch Kannibals” in case you can’t figure it out. The barbershop was added, as were all of the people, the wet street, and many of the neon signs in the windows. A lot of people enjoy my inside joke of having the “Very Quiet” sign in the hotel window, while next door is the “Live Bands Nightly” sign in the bar (plus of course you’ve got the choppers outside!).

Above the barber shop are two women (with very short skirts) in the window involved in some kind of kinky bondage scene with each other. The shapely babe in the bar’s doorway holding the whip (which I added, along with her blond hair) is in several of my pictures, and I don’t think I have to explain why!

This lithograph measures 19×25″ and is printed on heavy 80 lb. coated paper. It’s available (with a lot more of my art) for $30 ($35 signed) including shipping, on my website: www.retrovisions.com. I also do custom commissions and can put you, your car, bike, (or whatever) into most of my pictures.

ROAD WEARY FILMS ANNOUNCEMENT–Well, It’s hump day today and that only means that there’s a few more days left before we all converge on Cincinnati for some hard work and some good times. Road Weary Films has just announced that it’s offering all companies registered to exhibit at the 7th Annual V-Twin Expo by Easyriders held in Cincinnati, OH. a special one time video production package to help support the motorcycle industry and the individual companies associated with it.

Road Weary Films television resume includes Travel Channel, PBS, Current TV, Fuel TV, Discovery Channel’s Biker Build Off Series, and most recently a half-hour special for Paisano’s new show V-Twin TV on Speed Channel (Paul Yaffe custom build for Jeff Gordon). They bring top notch quality and talent with each project; the consumers that preview these promos have often commented “nice TV show.” While it’s too late this year to have them produce a first class video for your company for the ’07 Expo, you might want to take advantage of this one time offering from RWF for shows and rallies that you may attend throughout the rest of ’07!

This offer is good only through April 30, 2007 (their television shooting schedule begins in May) and is limited only to registered exhibitors of the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati! Manufacturers that are interested in having a first class video made at this one time offer should contact Rick Raus of V-Twin Marketing at 714-280-8537 or email him at Rick@vtwinmarketing.com or call Ryan Thiel of Road Weary Films at 605-850-3620 or email him at roadweary@rushmore.com To see samples of their work, please check out their website at www.roadwearyfilms.com. NEW MATT HOTCH TEK BATTEY WEB SITE ON LINE– THESE BATTERIES ARE AMAZING. The new website is www.TekBattery.com and is now up. It has the videoand a Matt Hotch page that gives more descriptions and pics:www.tekbattery.com

There are prices and some specs, but most battery manufacturersstretch the truth about crank amps and comparing specs is misleadingas you saw in a real test. Our stated crank amps x 2 or 3 wouldprobably be more realistic to claims by others.

We will put more specs and a Photo Gallery soon also.

OOORAH FOR THE MARINES–A United States Marine was attending some college courses betweenAssignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One ofthe courses had a professor who was a vowed atheist and a member of theACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked tothe ceiling and flatly stated, “God, if you are real, then I want youto knock me off this platform. I’ll give you exactly 15 minutes.”

The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minuteswent by and the professor proclaimed, “Here I am God. I’m stillwaiting.”

It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine gotout of his Chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him;knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold.

The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The otherstudents were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence.

The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at theMarine and asked, “What the hell is the matter with you? Why did you dothat?”

The Marine calmly replied, “God was too busy today protectingAmerica’s soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid shit andact like an asshole. So, He sent me.”

BIKERNET DUNK TANK–We spoke to the former producer of Steel Dreams Television shows and apparently he’s never been paid for freelance work. FELLOW FREEDOM FIGHTERS, WATCH MONTANA–Montana State Representative Betsy Hands and Montana State Senator LyndaMoss are continuing to sponsor Draft Bill LC1683, a mandatory motorcyclehelmet law:

“No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privilegesor immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state depriveany person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nordeny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of thelaws.”–U.S. Constitution, Amendment XIV, Section 1

Mandatory helmet laws like this one clearly demonstrate how good intentionsoften lead to bad legislation. ABATE of Montana has asked us to continueto flood their offices with letters, calls and emails protesting this bill, which is discriminatorily unconstitutional in that–by mandating helmets formotorcyclists as opposed to all motorists–it would violate the “equalprotection” guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the United StatesConstitution.

Tribute To David Mann

DAVE MANN

10 SEPTEMBER 1940 – 11 SEPTEMBER 2004

R.I.P.

The art of Dave Mann has touched us all at one time or another.

We've all had a poster of his work, ripped out of the centerfold of a biker magazine hanging in our garages. Dave inspired some of us with his talent and we looked at his works and started to chop our bikes to match those depicted in his illustrations. Over the past 30 years he produced numerous paintings and illustrations depicting the Biker lifestyle.

David Mann was born in Kansas City 1n 1940. He got his first job pinstriping customs in 1957. He later moved to California and worked for the legendary “Big Daddy” Ed Roth. In 1971, Dave went to work for Easy Riders Magazine and soon became a favorite of biker's worldwide. His pictures showed an honest example of the life we all hoped to live. Riding free and beholding to nothing but the bikes we rode and the people we rode them with.

In the past few years, David's health began to fail and he was no longer able to enjoy jumping on the 1957 Panhead Chopper that won him acclaim in a Kansas City Bike Show back in 1963 for being the first “Chopper” that had ever been seen in that part of the country.

David Mann's legacy will live forever in our hearts and on our shop walls. He passed away all to soon on September 11, 2004.

KLOCK WERKS TOURING 180 REAR TIRE KIT–Klock Werks is announcing their new Touring 180 rear tire kit which will be available in late March of 2007. The Klock Werks kit will allow H-D bagger owners to run a 180 rear tire on a 18?x 5.5? wheel in your stock frame and swing arm. The 180 kit will also remain belt drive. The kit will include Klock Werks? new Benchmark stamped rear fenders. The fenders are widened and stretched 6? longer than stock. The fender is available either smooth or with a stamped plate pocket. Klock Werks illuminated plate frame is specifically designed to fit the plate pocket of the new stamped fender.

bake side

All Klock Werks stamped fenders are stamped from 14 gauge US steel and are e-coated to prevent rust and eliminate the traditional oil coating. Also available are Klock Werks upper and lower steel filler to hide the ugly gap in between the bags and fender as always. The Klock Werks fillers and 180 tire kit does accommodate genuine H-D detachable docking points. So riders can still run their detachable H-D sissy bar and/or tour pack.

Moto GP bikes and performance oriented customs run this size of a tire, why not baggers. Now there is no good reason why not. We are looking to be able to ship the kits complete in 6-8 weeks. Looking forward to seeing you in Cinci!

THERE’S A PRE-CINCY NEWS, NEXT DAYTONA–Is shit happening or what? It just dawned on me that you can win a lot of good stuff on Bikernet, just coming around on Thursdays. We’ve got pipes, custom made Saddleman seats, Tickets to the Arlen Ness show and who knows what else. Don’t forget we sparked our own Free Contest area and give away T-shirts, books, CDs and bling parts all the time. Just sign up.

Here’s what’s coming to Bikernet. We have a new GOB girl in the works, if Ken Conte finishes the article. John Covington of Surgical Steeds, who captured his MC name back from the Patriot guys, will be shooting Phoenix girls for Bikernet in the next week or so with a Rockem Sockem bike. The Heartland Softail fender installation is coming from Johnny. We have a Bogart Bike feature ready to launch and hopefully Scott Long’s blue beauty. Hell, I have two features from Europe, a Violator and Fred Kodlin’s latest creation. A clutch tech is just around the corner from Kurt Taylor. There more techs and features coming than I can count. Two Saxon road test articles are headed in also. Plus we’re going to road test a new H-D Softail. Let me know if there’s a particular model you’d like us to investigate?

I’m going to escape in a couple of hours and blast to Pomona to judge the bikes at the Grand Nationals Roadster Show. How did I get hooked into that? At lunch today my son Frank and the National Chaplain from the Vagos rode in. We peeled to the harbor for chow and counseling. I blasted back enlightened to culminate the vast news. Both my son and his giant workout partner are new men. It’s good to see. I’m proud of them both.

I’m not religious, but I believe there’s a code, a spirit and a brotherhood among men of integrity.

EV-BATTERIES ROCK THE INDUSTRY–I won’t say much here, but check EV-Battery.com for the worlds newest battery technology. Get this, they weigh 1/4 what standard batteries weigh. They can be built in any configuration with the leads positioned in any direction. They are less than half the size of standard batteries and produce up to 350 amps. I watch an EV turn over a high performance V-Twin for over a minute steady before it began to falter. Matt Hotch ran it until all poop was gone, waited a minute, hooked up the coil wires and it fired the engine right to life. He ran the engine for just a minute and it was fully charged again. These thing are expensive, guaranteed for 10 years, but will rock this industry.

THE CHICKEN FARMER–A woman walks into an accountant’s office and tells him that she needsto file her taxes. The accountant says, “Before we begin, I’ll need toask you a few questions.”

He gets her name, address, social security number, etc. and then asks,”what is your occupation?”

“I’m a whore,” she says.

The accountant is somewhat taken back and says, “No, No, No, that won’twork. Let’s try to rephrase that”

The woman says, “OK, I’m a high-end call girl”.

“No, that still won’t work. Try again.”

They both think for a minute; then the woman says, “I’m an elitechicken farmer.”

The accountant asks, “What does chicken farming have to do with being aprostitute?”

“Well, I raised a thousand little peckers last year.”

“Chicken Farmer it is.”

BIKERNET CONCEPT BIKES COMING–Two build projects are coming to Bikernet soon, one with Johnny White building a Sucker Punch Sally bike for his Iraqi Veteran Brother, and one by Kent Weeks of Lucky Devil Motorworks in Houston for Bikernet babe, Nyla Olsen. We are working with Tim Conder and Dick Allen, this illustrator, to bring each concept to life.

DICK Allen
Illustration by Dick Allen. “But I’ll draw a rough scetch,” Kent said last night at midnight. I’ve seen Kent’s artwork-scary shit. Watch for the builds to start soon and both will also be featured in Magazines. We are working with Hot Bike on the Sucker Punch build.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND THE LUDACRIS FOUNDATION SUPPORT CHILDREN–Harley-Davidson partnered with hip hop artist Ludacris and The Ludacris Foundation to support his annual holiday party for 100 children on December 16, 2006, in Atlanta. The party was part of the Luda Cares initiative, which supports children and families in need during the holiday season by providing food, toys and clothes. Harley-Davidson donated school bags to each child in attendance.

The Ludacris Foundation and Harley-Davidson also hosted a tailgate party at the Georgia Dome during the Atlanta Falcons versus Dallas Cowboys football game on December 16, 2006. During the party, Harley-Davidson had motorcycles on display and provided guests with giveaways. Ludacris performed his hit song “Money Maker” during the half time show.

Harley-Davidson is also donating a 2007 FLSTF Fat Boy motorcycle to The Ludacris Foundation which will be auctioned off on eBay. The motorcycle will first tour around the country gaining celebrity autographs along the way. After its first stop at the Atlanta Falcons tailgate party, the motorcycle was shipped to Las Vegas for the 2007 NBA All-Star Game in February.

ORGANIZING BUILD-OFF FOR 2008 OHIO STATE RALLY–Is their anyway you can tell me how to contact a few people that would be interested in doing a BIKER BUILD OFF for the 2008 Ohio State Rally. I will be turning in a proposal ASAP and I am not sure where to begin. They have to use Harley Davidson parts. There will be anywhere from 1000-3000 people attending. It’s hard to tell. How do you find out who will do that? Maybe places that fix Motorcycles? I don’t know, maybe you have contacts in different states?
