whole room

Boring Thursday News–That is unless you?re interested in new products, Screamin Eagle Racing news and jokes. Now, if I were to begin the news with what?s going on with me like Bandit does, then you would be bored. Runaway teenagers, dog adoptions, fridge cleaning and waiting on contractors fill my days. Yawn.

cabinets and bad floor

But since you asked; most of the custom cabinets have been installed but we had to wait for replacement planks for my century old Douglas fir floor to install the rest. When we pulled out the carpet, we discovered that we did have hardwood floors throughout the top level. Interestingly, when this building was originally built, they laid the floor continuously then built the walls. Most of it is good enough for a sand and finish but we found a few cut-outs and some termite damage, hence the replacement planks. They deliver 10 ea – 10? planks tomorrow. They have to sit for three days to acclimate to the humidity then they can do all the repair work.

floor

We also found a strip of linoleum tiles that was the original hallway. My daughter and I take turns with a scraper and heat gun to remove it row by row. I figure we have about three days left to go at four rows each per day.

Enough of Bikernet?s own version of HGTV?s rezoned. Here?s the news?

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE WRECKING CREW TAKES FOUR OF THE TOP 10 SPOTS AT HAGERSTOWN–
Coolbeth Leads Screamin’ Eagle Riders with Second Place Finish
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (July 31, 2006) – Kenny Coolbeth fought all night to become the first repeat winner of the 2006 AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Twins championship season. The Screamin’ Eagle rider battled Saturday with current points leader Chris Carr throughout most of the race. Carr won the two-bike battle and the race to become the first man to stand on the top of the podium more than once.

Coolbeth finished second while factory teammate Rich King finished fourth. Wrecking crew teammates Jared Mees (Texter Harley-Davidson) and Bryan Smith (Pat Moroney’s Harley-Davidson) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, at the 25th Silver Annual Hub-City Classic in Hagerstown.

“This is the second consecutive season that I’ve been the runner-up at Hagerstown,” Coolbeth said. “I guess I have to wait another year to break that streak and win the event. It was a good race, I just came up a little short at the very end. Carr is a great rider and he did everything he could to keep me from moving around him.”

Coolbeth moved back into second place in the standings, just 12 points behind Carr and the Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson team. With just four races remaining in the season the Screamin’ Eagle team knows every point is extremely valuable.

“It’s going to be a fight to the finish,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “It will come down to the wire and it looks like the champion won’t be crowned until the final lap of the season. It’s going to be a hard fought championship chase and we’re pleased to have Screamin’ Eagle riders in the race for the series crown.”

This is the third time this season that Coolbeth has finished in the top three. It was the first time in the last three events that all four Wrecking Crew members qualified for the main event and finished in the top 10.

“We’re very pleased the Wrecking Crew all finished in the top 10 this week,” Paluso said. “Hopefully we can earn a few more podium finishes before the season is over. The teams are working so well together, so we know it’s possible.”

Joe Kopp and the Latus Harley-Davidson team earned the victory in Greenville, Ohio, two weeks ago. Carr, Dominic Beaulac and the Lombardi Harley-Davidson team, Coolbeth and the Screamin’ Eagle team, Mike Hacker and the Doc’s Harley-Davidson team each have one victory this season. The event at Syracuse, N.Y., was canceled after qualifying because of lighting and will not be rescheduled.

The next AMA Flat Track GNC Twins event is Saturday at Farley Speedway in Farley, Iowa.

man w everything

For the man who has everything.

New Men’s Diet: — I have a Labrador retriever & I was buying a large bag of Purina at Wal-Mart and was waiting in line to check out. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog (?). On impulse, I told her that no, I was starting The Purina Diet again. Although I probably shouldn’t, because I’d ended up in the hospital last time I tried it.

But that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry & that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story, particularly a tall guy who was behind her. Horrified, she asked if I’d been poisoned. I told her no; I’d been sitting in the street licking my balls and a car hit me.

I thought the tall guy was going to have to be helped out as he laughingly staggered to the door.

DU A Fool's Gold1

A FOOL?S GOLD–David Uhl recently made some changes to “A Fool’s Gold”, his Sturgis commemorative piece for this year, which you can see in the close-up image of the gold panner below.

“After looking at this piece for a few days, I decided to go back in and give my fool some more personality. I watched an episode of Deadwood and came to the conclusion that everyone in the show had immense character, so I went ahead and lit him up. I think it now shows the full spectrum of emotion from the elation of the panner to the passionate spirit of the natives. Enjoy.”

America?s Baby Cancer Foundation AnnouncesSpeedFreaks’ Board Appointments and Marketing Partnership– Huntington Beach, CA (August 2, 2006) ? America?s Baby Cancer Foundation (ABCF) and SpeedFreaks have inked a long term and integral marketing partnership to help raise the awareness of children’s cancer. In addition, Kenny Sargent and Lugg Nuttz, hosts from the SpeedFreaks Radio and Television programs, have been elected to its Board of Directors.

?SpeedFreaks finally found a cause we could really grab a hold of and make a difference,” says Sargent. “Serendipitously, it was a charity golf tournament that started the Freaks’ wheels to roll after we met Samiya, Matthew and Eddy, three of the many children America?s Baby Cancer Foundation’s helps from the Kaiser Permanente Hospital ?s Pediatric Cancer program.”

“It is with great pleasure that the Board of Directors welcome the SpeedFreaks team,” declares Phillis Lane, President and Vice-Chairman of ABCF. “The Foundation welcomes the commitment and enthusiasm exhibited by both gentlemen and is excited to be working with such a great and ubiquitous media outlet as SpeedFreaks.”

Lugg Nuttz became a supporter of America?s Baby Cancer Foundation three years ago by organizing an event at Irwindale Speedway in Los Angeles for the families of UCLA/ Mattel Children’s Hospital, Miller Children’s Hospital and the Kaiser Permanente Hospitals. At the Speedway, Lugg met some of the children who are currently battling cancer and their families. Through his efforts, Irwindale Speedway established a program where it now provides ABCF families with tickets for Saturday night races.

“You talk about a wake up call, baby cancer will affect over 11,000 children under the age of 15 this year,” says Lugg Nuttz. “If that wasn’t enough, childhood cancer rates are increasing at a rate of approximately 1% each year. SpeedFreaks’ massive blanketed media exposure will without a doubt assist in baby cancer awareness”

Building on the Irwindale Speedway success, SpeedFreaks intend to capitalize on the relationships with other motorsports’ venues, drivers, riders, teams and sponsors that have been so kind to the show over the years and come up with creative opportunities and events for these children to enjoy.

About America?s Baby Cancer Foundation The organization started as Sebastian?s Baby Cancer Foundation founded by Antonia and Bernard Hicks in 1999 to commemorate the life of their son, Sebastian, who was born with a rare cancer of the neck and brain and died at the age of 19 months. During Sebastian?s course of treatment, Bernard and Antonia realized the desperate need for research, aid and education for themselves, their son and for other families faced with baby cancer, so they created the Foundation with the mission:

to raise awareness of baby cancer to provide aid and education for families of children with cancer  to help fund research for a cure.

Phillis Lane joined the organization as a co-founder in 2001 after losing her grandson Josh to rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer of the soft muscle tissue, just before his 5th birthday.

In 2002, the organization’s name was changed to America?s Baby Cancer Foundation to better reflect the expanding geographic reach of the Foundation, and the growing network of families who share similar experiences and who have joined in the Foundation?s work to build and support its vision and activities.

Since then, ABCF has been building support and connections with some of the leading experts in Pediatric Cancer as well as establishing strong relationships at Southern California ?s major children?s hospitals:

Miller Children?s Hospital of Long Beach
UCLA-Mattel Children?s Hospital
Kaiser Permanente of Bellflower
Kaiser Permanente of Downey
Fountain Valley Hospital
UC Irvine University Children?s Hospital

ABCF?s fundraising proceeds go to fund medical and personal needs of the young cancer patients and their families, many of whom sacrifice everything to fight against this terrible disease. Foundation Directors and Volunteers work with needy families screened and referred to ABCF by hospital social workers. The Foundation?s task is to work with these families, helping them keep their insurance payments and other expenses current, providing transportation and other such assistance as needed, and using our advocacy work as a venue for collecting information and resources for its extensive online library.

S&S COMMENDS EPA CERTIFICATION PROGRAM–LA CROSSE, WI (August 3, 2006) S&S is pleased to announce that the EPA has recently released the ?Certification Procedure for Highway Motorcycle Engines.?

Following a year of successful efforts between the EPA and MIC (specifically, the MIC American V-Twin Committee, www.mic.org/vtwin.cfm?pagename=vtwin), document CISD-06-15 (MC) was released by the EPA on July 25, 2006. Drafted to allow the certification and sale of highway motorcycle engines to individuals, dealers, and small volume motorcycle manufacturers, the Certification Procedure permits certified engines installed in new highway motorcycle chassis to be operated or re-sold without restriction (provided the requirements of the procedure, as well as the federal Clean Air Act anti-tampering requirements, are met). Downloads and links related to this important news are available at www.sscycle.com/regulatory/index.php.

?With the original provision allowing only one non-compliant custom bike to be built in an individual?s lifetime, the EPA, with help from the MIC, S&S Cycle, and other industry leaders, has done a fantastic job of looking out for the best interest of the individual customers, dealers, and small volume manufacturers that make up our industry. Customers can now buy or build numerous emissions-compliant motorcycles, without having the worries of certifying or submitting paperwork to the EPA. I?m very excited to know consumers have options available to them, and that they won?t be constrained by the provisions originally established in 2003,? said S&S Engine Controls Group Engineer, Tom Henline.

Referring to an exemption documented in the EPA?s adoption of new emission standards for highway motorcycles in December 2003, the Certification Procedure will no longer limit individuals from building one highway motorcycle over their lifetime. Nor will the EPA?s 2003 emission standards exemptions limit the elaborate custom motorcycles that are created for display by collectors to 24 units per model year per builder. Said builders will now be able to purchase and install certified engine packages without the previous quantity limitation.

Declared Vice President of Product Development, Scott Sjovall, ?It?s great to have had a unified and accepted goal for our industry, an objective that was met by the EPA releasing the Certification Procedure. It?s been a pleasure to work with the EPA, MIC, and American V-Twin member companies; as well as Tom Austin from Sierra Research.?

?I view this as a profound moment for the v-twin enthusiast, custom bike builder, and small volume OEM,? said S&S president Brett Smith. ?This was something that S&S was a huge proponent of from the outset and I am very thankful that the MIC, Tom Austin, and the EPA were able to establish this letter of guidance allowing an engine certification program. I thank everyone else that was involved in making this happen, most particularly the members of the MIC?s American V-Twin Aftermarket Committee.?

The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) is a not-for-profit, national trade association representing manufacturers and distributors of motorcycles, scooters, motorcycle/ATV parts and accessories and members of allied trades, located in Irvine, California. For more information, please contact Danielle Reaves at 949-727-4211 ext. 3130 or at dreaves@mic.org.

“Great Doings”

The Enthousiast

I suppose I ought to explain something: For some obtuse reason, I feel I put alittle too much effort into a painting to simply dash off, leaving theviewer with a quick explanation of what is surface-level obvious. Nope… Ifigure I’d rather torture myself by doing two things at the same time;first, plumb my soul to come up with something truly powerful, and second, for it to have a character of personal uniqueness that appropriatelytranslates what I am saying with the piece. Something that causes inplaybetween artist and viewer. Yeah, that’s it. Push things in an interestingdirection.

At times, dragging out the name can be tough — I don’t get them for free. The process can be scary as hell. After all, painting is a black hole, acompression of many different emotions; pain, misery, elation, exploration– so why not reach deep within those personal depths to name the piece? Whynot cause myself misery and sift through my drama? — by the way, where’s mytherapist?

Maybe I could have gotten poetic andwinged off something like “Windblown Wavelets and Reflective Cud-Chewing”,but I’d be afraid that naming it so would be a case of anything meaninganything and nothing at the same time…

No, whatever I had to say about my painting had to say something about ALLof the painting. It had to say something about the machine. The flag. Thestone-faced riders with attitude — no, pride. The drama. I want to saysomething about one thing. I want to say something about everything. It hadto say speak BEYOND the painting. I wanted it to address something Iresponded to when I conceived the image — the PASSION. And I wanted it tospeak to the culmination of 100 years of what “IT” was all about — andspeak to what it will be.

So, I sat and stared at it for a while. Just like I did when it was a whitecanvas… except not as nervous (because I didn’t have to think how manyways I could destroy a perfectly clean, white canvas). A thought… scribbleit down and wait for the next candidate to appear. Then scribble that down.Flail myself for the next one and scribble that down.

Slowly, a list was compiled and reviewed. And there,in the midst of a long line of drunks, dropouts and derelicts, it shone:”Great Doings”.

AMERICAN BIKER PARTY ROARED INTO POLITICAL ARENA–The Wisconsin-based third party is not shy about its origins: five bikers fed up with the way the government operates. Its membership includes doctors and other professionals, and people who steer clear of motorcycles.

Party leaders want voters to have a say in politics and have the government operate based on the ideals set forth by the country’s founding fathers in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

“I always voted, but when I went to the polls, I didn’t have a lot of excitement or hope,” said member Pete Schultz, 40, of Marshfield. “This is an idea that is going to catch on.”

The party was co-founded this year by Steven “Mad” Erato, but the Vietnam War veteran said he had considered the new political party for years. Erato said he was disgusted by the poor quality of health insurance provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and cuts to the program in recent years.

Erato, 55, of Neenah served in Vietnam for the U.S. Army from 1971 to 72. He said he is listed as 100 percent disabled because of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“The guys in the Gulf War, they are people who had jobs and family already,” Erato said. “If they have a family and worked at the average factory or mill, they will find the (Veterans Health Administration) insurance is much worse than when they had a job.”

The party’s platform, developed at its convention earlier this month, is: affordable health care for everyone; the restoration of civil liberties by ending the Patriot Act; improved employment for Americans; providing strong support and funding to the military; and supporting the Bill of Rights as it was written, not as interpreted by the courts.

The American Biker Party does not plan to run candidates for office in the near future, but rather to support existing politicians or challengers. The party is interviewing local, state and national political candidates to see who best supports the party’s initiatives.

THE JOHN REED PHILOSOPHY CLASS–A financially successful designer can anticipate the future trends, but have the discipline to work in a fashion time scale which gets the best financial returns.

There is a trend Ror racy type bikes, ie. Jesse Rook and Rowland Sands. I figured out why I am poor, I think I was a little bit early.

JERRY MAGNUSON REPORT–As for the “story notion,” I think Jerry Magnuson won one of the bike awards at the Queen Mary show. I know it was a supercharger guy because I spoke with him. Have to find my notes. He sold the company to B&M. Then Eaton got involved. There’s also a Magnuson Products that sells blower.

I also found a 1995 article about a Magnuson blower and guess what? It was for the ’94 T-Bird I own. And boy it needs a blower. Get me one and I’ll write the story, okay?

WE?RE ROLLING–We?ve packed some, charged our digital camera batteries, grabbed a note book for the Sturgis story and started packing tools. The list is a page long and getting longer. The King tanks are full, we checked the oil in the 2003 and took a lesson on operating the 2007 King stereo with XM. There was some discussion about removing the windshield from the new bike, but we decided to run one with the shield and the other without.

I?ll pack one of my bedrolls for the front of the blacked-out King and strap on my workout shoes from some wind block. Actually works like a champ.

If you?re going, we wish you all the best roads and weather. We also hope it will be a helluva adventure packed with terrific rides, slipping along the asphalt like a pilot skimming close to the earth, totally free and fearless. We hope the best looking, best natured girls meet you in every town and assure you that love is just around the corner. In other works have a helluva good time.

horseshoe

BIKERNET PRODUCT OF THE WEEK–ATTACHED is an image that I want to use to make (QUANTITY 4) decorative steelpieces to install on 4 horseshoe pit backboards at my rental properties. I thought itwould be nice to have this design on the backboards. Whatever material you use…has to be strong enough to handle a horseshoe flying through the air and hitting it(.12 thickness is what I’m thinking)…and also has to handle the SUN and WINTER, because these 4 pieces will be installedoutside.

They can look old and rustic looking… that’s fine… the edges don’t have tobe perfectly smooth… neither does the surface. Smooth is fine… but it doesn’t haveto be. These decorative pieces will SET THE MOOD when playing horseshoes.COLOR: I may prime and paint them BLACK or white… I’m undecided right now.

One company said to use Hot Rolled Steel. I don’t know what that is. I just wantsomething thick that’s strong and looks good. I will attach these to the backboardsusing screws. Something THAT WON’T RUST… and can handle all weather conditions.

The material I will be attaching the 4 pieces to (The horseshoe pit backboard) istreated pine. I may someday paint the treated pine WHITE and paint the designsyou create BLACK or DARK RED to match the homes shutters. Another ideais to stain the pits ROSEWOOD RED and prime and paint the designs you makeSHINY WHITE. For now… I have to leave the wood greenish to dry out beforepaint will absorb into the wood properly.

avon tire growth

AVON TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK–Here’s the latest. Will you be at Sturgis. We’ll be there behind the J&P store with Raymertown Garage (dealer who is installing tires). We’re also a sponsor of the AMD world championship, Kids & Chrome, Easyrider/Penthouse, and Jesse Jurren’s top 50 build so we’ll be all over the map at Sturgis. Hope we see you there.

Question of the week:How much can tires grow and what to watch out for?

Tires can grow up to 7% in the first 200 miles so you need to leave clearance between your fender and the tire. Also take into account that clearance might look fine with no one sitting on the bike but as soon as you sit on it clearance can be reduced. And if you go over a pothole and the suspension compresses you will have even less clearance. Many of the big fat custom tires nowadays grow very little (1-2mm/ 1/32) but it is best to allow a good 1/2 inch if you can (13mm).

Tire pressure should be checked with the tire is cold before you start out on your ride. If after an hour of riding you see more than a 4-6 lb rise (or roughly 10%) the tire pressure needs to be increased, the load reduced, or the speed reduced as the tire is working too hard and will wear prematurely.

avon venom banner

It’s also important to buy an accurate gauge. Pencil gauges get banged around and are often incorrect. Even expenisve gauges should be calibrated at least once a year. A good rule of thumb is to compare your gauge reading with your friends’ gauges to see if yours is still accurate. You may be faithfully checking your tire pressure but if your gauge is wrong your tire will run underinflated and tire mileage will suffer. Check tire pressure before every ride and you will be amazed how many more miles you get to enjoy on the same tire.

JAY SPRINGSTEEN INJURED–Legendary dirt tracker Jay Springsteen is recovering nicely from injuries suffered in a Saturday night dirt track incident, his wife said on Tuesday morning.

In a phone call from Ohio, Judy Springsteen said her husband was flirting with the nurses in front of her and cracking jokes with his doctors, both of which sees as positive signs that he’s getting back to his usual self. The Bartel’s Harley-Davidson / SuperTrapp / Rock Springs rider continues to recover in Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio where he was taken after suffering multiple injuries during his heat race in Saturday night’s Greenville, Ohio AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship half-mile.

The three-time Grand National Champion suffered multiple thoracic fractures and left rib fractures. Doctors inserted three pins and a rod into the top of his one damaged vertebrae and a pin below it. Judy Springsteen said he has very little memory of the accident. Before he went into surgery, he jokingly asked his doctors, “Are you going to put American or metric in my body?”

Judy Springsteen reports that he’s in good spirits and that “he’s doing well, he wants to get up,” and that he’s waiting for his body cast, also known as a ‘turtle.’ He’ll have to wear the body cast for two months and the total recovery time will be about six months, she said, which means his race season is over.”The next time you’ll see him is at the Daytona road race tracks,” she said.

His release from the hospital will depend on how easily he can move around with the body cast. Once he’s comfortable, he’ll be transported back to his home in Lapeer, Michigan.

The best way to reach Springsteen is by e-mail, juspringsteen@yahoo.com.

Cards and letters can be sent to the following addresses, but Judy Springsteen requested that no one try to reach him by phone while he recovers.

PLANE TAKE-OFF MISHAP CLAIMS WYATT FULLER AND “FLYING FOSSIL”–The name, “Flying Fossil,” was a jaunty thumb in the eye of the plane’s age, but the F-86 Sabrejet fighter was restored to like-new condition throughout. Despite that, it remained a 1950s aircraft, with 1950s technology; and jets of that time had a safety record unlike their modern descendants.

That safety record is a hair worse today, after the vintage fighter crashed and burned on takeoff at 11:40 AM Monday, killing pilot Wyatt Fuller.

The plane, N86FS, crashed on takeoff. Media reports from the scene indicate that witnesses saw the plane begin its takeoff run and rotate, but never leave the runway. It went off the end of the runway at high speed and crashed and burned, coming to a stop on a road hundreds of feet from the departure end of the runway. Local firefighters responded quickly, but the plane was fully aflame by the time they arrived. Despite their efforts, the plane, apart from its peripheries, was consumed by fire.

Fuller intended to fly to Oshkosh, WI and display the plane there during AirVenture 2006. The airplane would probably have had full fuel for cross-country flight.

The F-86 was fully restored, even to the (non-functioning) machine guns. It was kept polished to gleaming perfection, and painted in a bright trim scheme with colorful stripes. The F-86 is important historically as the most significant US fighter of the Korean War.

Fuller, known as an enthusiast for all kinds of high-performance machinery, has a full schedule of air shows booked. In the aftermath of his mishap, the website for his airshow act was off the air.

He was an experienced warbird pilot, and owner of an AT-6, an L-39, the F-86, and an A-4 Skyhawk that was a restoration-to-airworthy-status project. A former Braniff captain, Fuller has worked as a subcontractor and design consultant for Harley-Davidson, offered his own line of custom motorcycles, and was also well-known in hot rod and custom car circles for his unusual projects.

BIKERNET APPLE FARMS–A man is riding down a country road when he sees a sign, “Apples $5.00 each.” Intrigued to find out why an apple should cost that much, he stops and asks the farmer why the apples are so expensive.

The farmer says, “These are special peanut butter and jelly apples. Here, try one.”

The man takes a bite and says, “Unbelievable; I taste the peanut butter but not the jelly.”

The farmer says, “Turn it around.” He does and he savors a sweet jelly.

The farmer says, “I’ve got ham and cheese apples, too, but they’re $10.00 each.”

The man is excited, buys one, takes a bite and says, “Wow, these are great but I taste the ham but not the cheese.”

The farmer says, “Turn it around.” He does, takes a bite and a rich, creamy cheese taste fills his mouth.

The farmer says, “Now, if you really like those, I’ve got some very special apples that cost $50.00 each. They’re pussy apples.”

The man cannot resist and buys one. He takes a bite and says, “YUCK, these taste like shit!”

The farmer says, “Turn it around…

JARED MEES CLAIMS PODIUM FINISHES FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON WRECKING CREW IN OHIO–GREENVILLE, Ohio (July 24, 2006) – For the second consecutive weekend Jared Mees made a sharp climb up the points ladder in AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Twins championship series. Mees led the way for the Screamin’ Eagle Wrecking Crew Saturday, finishing in second place at the Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio.

Another podium finish – just one week after his victory in Saluda, Va., — moved Mees up from fifth to second place in the GNC Twins point standings. Mees and the Texter Harley-Davidson/ Screamin’ Eagle team had the No. 9 position just two weeks ago.

“Overall it wasn’t a great race for us because we should have won,” Mees said. “But at the end there was a red flag on the track and (Joe) Kopp got ahead of me on the restart and went on to win. That just shows that you can go from penthouse to outhouse pretty quick.”

Mees qualified first in his heat and earned the No. 1 qualifying position for the main event before finishing second for the night. Kopp rode his Latus Harley-Davidson sponsored ride to the event victory.

“We want to do everything we can to keep the momentum rolling,” Mees said. “(Tuner) Johnny Goad has this bike running so well and we need to battle (points leader) Chris Carr and do whatever we can to challenge him for the championship.”

Factory-supported Screamin’ Eagle riders Rich King and Kenny Coolbeth did not have nearly the same positive results this weekend. King did not qualify for the main event for the second consecutive weekend while Coolbeth finished in seventh place. The fourth rider in the Wrecking Crew – Bryan Smith and the Pat Moroney’s/ Screamin’ Eagle team – suffered a broken bike before the race started and finished in 18th place for the night.

“It was a tough weekend for the Screamin’ Eagle team,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “We approach every race with hopes that all four Wrecking Crew riders can not only qualify, but finish in the top five. That wasn’t the case this weekend and I think it’s a good thing there isn’t too much time before the next event. The teams can regroup quickly and get ready for the next race without having to dwell on Greenville for too long.”

Kopp became the sixth different rider to claim a victory in as many races this season. Points leader Chris Carr and the Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson team, Dominic Beaulac and the Lombardi Harley-Davidson team, Coolbeth and the Screamin’ Eagle team, Mike Hacker and the Doc’s Harley-Davidson team along with Mees and Kopp each have one victory this season. The event at Syracuse, N.Y. was canceled after qualifying because of lighting and will not be rescheduled.

The next AMA Flat Track GNC Twins event is Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown, Maryland.

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN WIFE–A successful rancher died and left everything to his devoted wife. She was determined to keep the ranch, but knew very little about ranching, so she placed an ad in the newspaper for a ranch hand. Two cowboys applied for the job. One was gay and the other a drunk.

She thought long and hard about it, and when no one else applied she decided to hire the gay guy, figuring it would be safer to have him around the house than the drunk.

He proved to be a hard worker who put in long hours every day and knew a lot about ranching. For weeks, the two of them worked hard and the ranch was doing very well. Then one day, the rancher’s widow said “You have done a really good job, and the ranch looks great. You should go into town and kick up your heels.” The hired hand readily agreed and went into town on Saturday night.

He returned around 2:30 am, and upon entering the room, he found the rancher’s widow sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, waiting for him.

She quietly called him over to her.

“Unbutton my blouse and take it off,” she said. Trembling, he did as she directed.

“Now take off my boots.” He did as she asked, ever so slowly.

“Now take off my socks.” He removed each gently and placed them neatly by her boots.

“Now take off my skirt.” He slowly unbuttoned it, constantly watching her eyes in the fire light.

“Now take off my bra.” Again, with trembling hands, he did as he was told and dropped it to the floor.

Then she looked at him and said: “If you ever wear my clothes into town again, you’re fired!”

OLD SHOT

WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL ENGINE DISCOVERED–The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today. The Aioi Works of Japan’s Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken.

It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them.

The cylinder bore is just under 38″ and the stroke is just over 98″. Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

Get this: They weigh 2,300 pounds, are 89 feet long and 44 feet high. They put out 108,920 HP at 102 rpms and 5,608,000 foot-pounds of Torque.

Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour. At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency. That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion._ For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range.

Even at it’s most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour.

BUELL XBRR CRACKS TOP 10 IN AMA FORMULA XTREME AT LAGUNA–LAGUNA SECA, Calif. (July 22, 2006) – Jeremy McWilliams, riding a Buell XBRR for Warr’s of London Harley-Davidson/Buell (Great Britain) and Buell Motorcycle Company, finished eighth in the AMA Formula Xtreme race at round seven of the AMA Superbike Championship at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Classic H-D/Buell-Millville H-D/Buell-Innovative Motorcycle Research rider Mike Hale qualified another Buell XBRR for the Formula Xtreme National, but was forced to retire after the warm-up lap due to an oil leak resulting from a harried, last-minute mechanical change.

buell racing

McWilliams, a veteran Irish racer and former MotoGP rider, posted the seventh-fastest lap time during Formula Xtreme practice, but had a disappointing qualifying session and started the race from the 15th position.

“We made a few mistakes in Jeremy’s setup for qualifying,” said Steve Anderson, Buell Platform Director, “but the team got the bike back on the pace for the race and that’s what mattered. Jeremy was able to move up quickly at the start.”

Hale, in his first race aboard the XBRR, qualified in 27th position. During the Saturday morning warm up, he bettered his qualifying time by 1.3 seconds and was running in the top 20 overall.

McWilliams sprinted from 15th to ninth position on the first lap of the 15-lap race on the 2.24-mile Mazda Raceway road course, and moved up to seventh spot on lap four. He dropped to eighth on lap 11 and finished in that position.

“A top-ten finish at an AMA National event, with very little setup and practice time is a great result for this young effort,” said Buell Motorcycle Company Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “We’re learning quickly and the XBRR is gaining performance and reliability, a trend that will continue as we and our dealer teams keep the effort high.”

buell guys

Both teams racing XBRR models received support from Pirelli Tires, Sentry Insurance, Harley-Davidson Financial Services, Screamin’ Eagle SYN3 Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant, and Harley-Davidson Visa.

The Buell XBRR is a limited-edition production racing motorcycle based on the Firebolt XB12R, which is reworked at the factory into the XBRR for use in closed-course competition. It offers private racers a professional-level, race-ready, production-based platform.

THE BLOND AND THE PORCH– A blonde, wanting to earn some extra money, decided to hire herself out as a “handy-woman” and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house, and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do.

“Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch”, he said. “How much will you charge me?”

The blonde quickly responded, “How about $50?” The man agreed and told her that the paint and everything she would need was in the garage.

The man’s wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband, “Does she realize that our porch goes all the way around the house”?

He responded, “That’s a bit cynical, isn’t it?”

The wife replied, “You’re right. I guess I’m starting to believe all those ‘dumb blonde’ jokes we’ve been getting by e-mail lately.”

A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money. “You’re finished already?” the husband asked.

“Yes,” the blonde replied, “and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats.”

Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50 and handed it to her.

“And by the way”, the blonde added, “it’s not a Porch, it’s a Lexus”.

Didn’t like the first shot. Here’s one of a Roland Sands bike by Peter Linney.

Hey,

It’s that time. The clock has run out. It’s time to pull out for the Badlands. We’re rolling on Saturday out to the Daytec plant smack in the center of the California desert, then to the Billet Bar in Phoenix, and then up to Sedona. This is the first year I’ve planned and built a bike, but couldn’t ride it. It ain’t complete. Still waiting on paint and the engine.

That’s cool. A brother Hamster flew out from Cape code and we’re riding Road Kings to Sturgis. We’ll be testing a new 2007 96-inch Road King with a 6-speed against my slightly modified 2003 King with highbars. Get this, the 2007 King has a radio and XM satellite radio connection for constant entertainment. One King is lowered and the other has a windshield. One has been to Sturgis, last year, the other is a virgin. One has the ultimate touring pegs, the other has crashbars. We’ll bring you the complete saga on Bikernet, the ride, the bikes, the comparison, the women and Sturgis. Sinwu bought me a new pocket Casio digital camera and I have a 500 shot budget.

Let’s hit the news, we need to pack:

EUROPEAN PHOTOGRAPHERS SHOOTING FOR BIKERNET IN STURGIS– I will email you some shots that nobody in the US has ever seen. There’s this yearly event in a little town in Holland called The Black Cross (“De Zwarte Cross” in Dutch), and I was there this weekend. It’s basically 50,000 people gathering for three days for music, lots of beer, amusement park rides, lots of live rock music, and the most crazy motorcross you can imagine.

The only rule is: wear a helmet. I truly believe Holland is the only place in the world where the authorities would allow something like this.

STURGIS CALL FOR CUSTOMS FOR THE METZELER 4TH ANNUAL BIKE SHOW NOW AT THUNDER ROAD–A bigger, wilder, hotter Metzeler 4th Annual Sturgis V-Twin Custom Bike Contest is scheduled for Tuesday, August 8, 2006, in that famous cycling city edging the Black Hills of South Dakota.

New for 2006, Metzeler’s Sturgis V-Twin Custom Bike Contest is now at Thunder Road on Route 34 – the main drag through Sturgis – located 3 miles east of downtown. This new location, in the heart of the custom cruising action, will make travel easier for entrants and spectators, giving more exposure for the builders showing their bikes.

The theme for the 2006 Metzeler 4th Annual Sturgis V-Twin Custom Bike Contest is “Roll Big at Thunder Road”, celebrating Metzeler’s leading role in the muscle-tire trend, now blown to new proportions with the radical, 21-inch, low-profile rear.

The V-Twin Custom Bike Contest will have multiple classes for both amateur and semi-pro builders, plus the popular People’s Choice Award, allowing every visitor at the show the chance to cast a vote that counts.

Judging will be by a list of qualified industry insiders from V-twin magazine editors, to artists, to custom-cruiser trend setters like pro-builder Eddie Trotta of Thunder Cycle Design. Trotta has already committed to being an honored guest at Metzeler’s 4th Annual Sturgis V-Twin Custom Bike Contest. There also promises to be a wide field of media attending the event, continuing the contest’s trend of high-profile print and television exposure. Once again the contest will be hosted by the nearly famous Metzeler girls, who will treat cruiser riders with special gifts from free random Prize Drawings.

Old Skool, New School, All(s)Kool. Also on show at Thunder Road is photographer Michael Lichter’s 6th annual exhibition of motorcycles in/as art. The machines on display for 2006 were built by 22 of the top custom bike builders from across America, each exploring the themes of “old skool, new school.” Don’t be a dropout, be there.

In addition to piles of cool trophies for the top placers in each class, the winner of the popular-vote Best in Show will be featured in 2007 Metzeler Tires advertising. Very cool.

BLONDE COOKBOOK–
MONDAY:It’s fun to cook for Tom. Today I made angel foodcake. The recipe said beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbors were nice enough to loan me some extra bowls.

TUESDAY:Tom wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said serve without dressing. So I didn’t dress. What a surprise when Tom brought a friend home for supper.

WEDNESDAY:A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed kind of silly but I took a bath anyway. I can’t say it improved the rice any.

THURSDAY:Today Tom asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients, then toss on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving. Tom asked me why I was rolling around in the garden.

FRIDAY:I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put the ingredients in bowl and beat it. There must have been something wrong with this Recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left.

SATURDAY:Tom did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday (oh boy) For some reason Tom keeps counting to ten.

SUNDAY:Tom’s folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast but all I had was hamburger Suddenly I had a flash of genius. I put the hamburger in the oven and set the controls for roast. It still came out hamburger, much to my disappointment.

GOOD NIGHT DEAR DIARY. This has been a very exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Tom. If I can talk Tom into buying a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with Chocolate Moose.

HORSE MARTIN
This is a great shot of Steve Veltri and Ed Martin with our Horse Maiden of the year at this year’s event in Salisbury.

SMOKE OUT WEST SET TO HIT THE ROAD WITH A BANG– What is the one motorcycle event that hardcore chopper people have made a can’t-miss for the past seven years? Everyone knows it’s The Horse Smoke Out, held each June in Salisbury, North Carolina. The seventh version of that star-studded event recently concluded and it was bigger and better than ever. Chopper luminaries like Billy Lane, Kendall Johnson, Indian Larry Legacy, Hank Young and many more have made The Horse Smoke Out their destination for years.

The Horse Back Street Choppers Magazine has been hearing from their readers for a long time that there needed to be a Smoke Out type of event out west. That is set to happen this fall.

Cottonwood, Arizona, will be home to The Horse Smoke Out West, Sponsored by Bikernet.com, this October 6 & 7. Smoke Out West promises to be as much fun and just as intense as the original Horse Smoke Out. To assure that happens, the Supersuckers and Devil Doll have been signed as headline musical entertainment.

smoke out west poster

The Horse Smoke Out West hits the ground running with a top-talent Chopper Build Off, too. Four top builders are building their bikes right now. Those include Cole Foster of Salinas Boys Customs, Scott Webster of Leroy Thompson Choppers, Keino and Paul Cox of Indian Larry Legacy, and Scott Craig of Chopperville Custom Cycles. These guys all have killer bikes in the works and the winner will be chosen by spectator ballot.

In addition to the Chop-Off and the great rock & roll, there will also be a participants’ Old School Chopper Show. The one in Salisbury had over 200 entrants. Look for the same participation in Cottonwood. Major vendors and bike shops have already signed up to exhibit and sell their wares.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE COMPANY ANNOUNCES A NEW HOME– Kings Mountain, NC (July 20, 2006) – Indian Motorcycle Company is pleased to announce that it will be revving up its engine in a new home. After carefully reviewing location options throughout the United States, Indian has selected a factory in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, where it will place its world headquarters. The site, located in Cleveland County, 37 miles west of downtown Charlotte, includes 11 acres of property and a 40,000 square foot manufacturing facility which is expandable to 125,000 square feet.

“We believe Cleveland County and the greater Charlotte area are a perfect fit for Indian Motorcycle Company and we’re proud to call this area home,” said Indian Chairman, Stephen Julius. “We are in the heart of our nation’s powersports industry, with access to design, engineering and mechanical talent, world-class suppliers, motorsport education centers and year-round motorcycle riding weather. In addition, this area provides us with economic advantages, including a low overall cost of doing business, which was aided by a strong incentive package provided by Cleveland County and by the State of North Carolina.”

The announcement of the factory site marks the official re-launch of Indian Motorcycle Company, America’s oldest and most iconic motorcycle brand, founded in 1901. In preparation for Indian’s re-launch, management has spent considerable time over the last two years researching the American motorcycle market and learning from the successes and failures of other market entrants. In particular, Indian has studied the tremendous growth of Harley-Davidson from near-bankruptcy in the early 1980’s to a multi-billion dollar success story today. However, Indian is intent on slowly carving out its own niche in the large and growing heavyweight cruiser motorcycle market.

Indian

There is a considerable consumer base for a premium line of motorcycles under the Indian Motorcycle brand, which has an almost cult-like status amongst many consumers. The company will focus on supplying genuine, American made, motorcycles which are beautifully designed, made of the highest quality materials, reliable and supported by a qualified dealer network.

Over the next 12 months, Indian will focus on design, engineering and testing activities, with the objective of introducing the famed Indian? Chief motorcycle in the second half of 2007. To head up its product development team, Indian has hired Geoffrey Burgess, a world-renowned motorcycle engineer and product development expert. Geoff was most recently the Chief Technology Officer at Global Motorsports Group (“GMG”), owner of Custom Chrome, a provider of parts and accessories to the American V-twin motorcycle market. Prior to GMG, Geoff was head of product development at S&S Cycle, Inc., a leading V-twin engine manufacturing company, where he drove product innovation and process improvement to new levels.

Prior to joining S&S, Geoff was the first employee and Chief Engineer at the Victory Motorcycle division of Polaris Industries, Inc., in Roseau, Minnesota. Geoff has also served in various senior engineering capacities at General Motors, Bombardier Recreational Products (Valcourt, Quebec), BSA-Triumph Motorcycles and Norton-Villiers Motorcycle Group. “Having Geoff on our team is a big win for Indian®,” commented Indian President, David Wright. “His breadth and depth of knowledge of the American motorcycle market is impressive and his technical capabilities unsurpassed. He has outstanding powertrain and chassis design and development experience which we will put to good use. He is the perfect person for this role.”

Indian is presently seeking to expand its team of engine and chassis engineers, technicians and CAD designers. “Our team will focus on design, quality, craftsmanship and service,” commented Mr. Wright. “Indian remains among the most powerful brands in the U.S. motorcycle market, and our team is committed to re-building the extraordinary legend of Indian?.” In the first half of 2007, Indian? will begin the process of developing a small but highly qualified network of motorcycle dealers who understand and appreciate the heritage of Indian? and recognize the growth potential of this opportunity.

The controlling shareholder of Indian Motorcycle Company is London based Stellican Limited which has an impressive track record of resurrecting classic brands, including, most recently, the successful re-launch of Chris-Craft? boats, which was founded in 1874 and is among the oldest boat brands in the United States. “We will apply the same practical and long-term approach to Indian as we have employed successfully at Chris-Craft”, commented Stephen Julius, Chairman of both Indian Motorcycle and Chris-Craft. “We are confident we will repeat our success with Indian? by remaining true to the rich heritage of this incredible brand and doing things slowly and thoroughly. We are certain that there is an important role for Indian? in the future of the American motorcycle market” added Mr. Julius.

AMA BANNER

AMA NEWS, The National Transportation Safety Board– will hold a two-day public forum on motorcycle safety beginning on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 in Washington, DC. Board Member Debbie Hersman will preside as Chair of the forum.

Last year, 4,315 motorcyclists died in crashes and the rate of motorcycle fatalities has increased more than 25 percent since 1997. “At a time when highway fatalities have been decreasing, motorcycle fatalities have continued to increase, both in overall number and in fatality rate,” said Member Hersman.

The goal of the public forum is to gather information about ongoing motorcycle safety research and initiatives, as well as safety countermeasures that may reduce the likelihood of motorcycle accidents and fatalities.”

During the forum, the NTSB will examine issues raised by a number of recent motorcycle accidents, including the June 12 motorcycle crash involving Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and the June 11 crash involving a motorcycle and a minivan in Williamsport, PA that killed five persons.

NTSB staff will lead technical panel discussions that will examine each major aspect of motorcycle safety, including rider training and licensing, rider protective equipment, vehicle design, and public education of motorists and motorcyclists. Representatives from the motorcycle industry, government, and motorcycling organizations will be invited to give presentations highlighting their perspectives.

The forum will be held in Washington at the NTSB’s Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L’Enfant Plaza, SW. An agenda for the forum will be posted on the NTSB’s website when available. The general public will be able to observe the forum either in person or by webcast at www.ntsb.gov.

VERMONT SHERIFF BUSTED–A Vermont sheriff whose officers improperly shut down a dual-sport ride nearly two years ago is back in the news and out of office.

Windham County Sheriff Sheila Prue pleaded guilty to embezzlement in court and submitted her resignation on June 23. The charges were unrelated to the events of August 8, 2004, when Prue’s deputies threatened to arrest riders in the Red Fox Turkey Run.

In that incident, deputies told riders they would be arrested and their motorcycles confiscated, even if they rode fully licensed street-legal motorcycles on public roads.

The decision to halt the dual-sport ride became a big controversy among New England riders. An investigation by the Vermont State Attorney General concluded that sheriff’s deputies were wrong to stop the event.

PHILLIPPINE ROADS SHUT DOWN TO MOTORCYCLISTS– The Philippines Supreme Court (SC) has ordered motorcycles of all types and sizes to keep off the North and South Luzon expressways after it affirmed the validity of an administrative order of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) prohibiting motorcycles from using the expressways. These expressways are the major corridors for travel through the largest of the Philippine Islands.

NEW YORK STATES MAKES AN EFFORT FOR AWARENESS– New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has completed a new 30-second TV public service announcement on motorcycle awareness.

Newly appointed New York DMV Commissioner Nancy Naples appears on the sidewalk after a graphic car/motorcycle right of way violation, telling viewers, “Motorcycle accidents aren’t accidents at all, too many are crashes caused by inattentive drivers who just pull into oncoming traffic with little more than a glance. I’m DMV Commissioner Nancy Naples, asking you to please watch for motorcycles.”

Assistant Commissioner for Transportation Safety Rob Dingman spearheaded the video. Dingman’s name may be familiar to many readers of AMA Rights News & Notes because he is the former AMA Washington Representative.

In addition, Governor Pataki is now considering A4914 which passed both houses of the legislature and is awaiting his signature. This legislation is consistent with the AMA Justice for All Campaign which is focused on inadequate sentencing of drivers who seriously injure or kill others on the road. CONTROVERSIAL PARTS BY JESSE JAMES–OK, I just went over and asked. Pete (HAMC Dago) the owner of Dummonts, in El Cajon, has the trademark on FTW Inc. That’s his corporate name. WCC should have done a little research before using the name. Pete has it and I think at the least Jessie should contact him and ask to use the name. I don’t know what Pete would say, but just starting up production is a bad idea.

Sorry it took so long.

ISR BAR CONTROLS

ISR BAR CONTROLS ON THE SALT SHAKER–For several years now Gard and LACC have used ISR components and brakes exclusively on all their custom builds. The combination of simple design and unbeatable performance were the attraction and that led to the appointment of LA County Choprods as the exclusive distributor for North and South America as well as Canada. The parts are available through LACC and their web site. http://www.lachoprods.com/

They are bitchin, and we’ll post shots of a series of ISR components over the next couple of months. In the meantime I’m bleeding my brakes.

I’M BURNIN’ DAYLIGHT–I need to finish some wiring tonight. We installed Dyna rear axle adjusters and with the True Track components, handling will be tight.

Accurate Eng. Banner

Couple more things tonight and I’ll be ready for the Accurate 120 engine, Jim Murillo paint and I can start the Eddie Trotta break-in routine. I’m itchin’, scratchin’ and waiting for the lovely Sin Wu to code a bunch of Bonneville Update images so I can write you an update with all the build details. I’ll mention an important detail about Accurate Engines. Unlike most engine manufacturers, when you receive an Accurate powerhouse, it’s ready to rock with the carb, the ignition system (with coils), and the charging system. “At one time I sent top motormounts,” Berry Wardlaw said, “but I stopped. I was damned if I did ’cause they didn’t fit, or damned if I didn’t, so I don’t.” That’s cool to receive a mill that’s ready to hook a gas line to, install the pipes, run a hot wire to and roll down the driveway. Incredible.

Somebody else bug her. I’m dried up. Okay, I’m going to hit the iron pile, shower and jump back into the garage.

BIKERNET MEDICAL FILES–Two patients limp into two different American Medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement. The first patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week. The second sees the family doctor after waiting a week for an appointment, then waits eighteen weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn’t reviewed for another month and finally has his surgery scheduled for 6 months from then.

Why the different treatment for the two patients?

SCHWARZENEGGER FINALLY GETS A MOTORCYCLE LICENSE– The Governator has finally gotten a motorcycle license after riding his Harley-Davidsons for years in movies and off without one.

Nearly six months after he crashed one of his Harleys into an S.U.V. pulling out of a driveway while riding near his Los Angeles home with his 12-year-old son in a sidecar, the California governor has taken and passed both a written and a riding test and got the required permit. The governor, who needed 15 stitches on his upper lip, said at the time that he had not bothered to get the proper license because he had “never thought about it.”

The Los Angeles Police Department did not issue any citations in the accident because department officials said no police officer saw what had happened. Officials at the Department of Motor Vehicles also cleared the governor of any violation, noting that because of the sidecar he was not technically riding on two wheels.

STAR WARS MEETS T-3– Remote speed control technology, as recently featured in the Terminator 3 movie, is coming next year to London. Using satellite positioning in conjunction with on-board electronics would ensure total compliance with speed limits and would reduce injury accidents by 20%, according to a report issued by the Institute of Transport Studies at Leeds University.

A trial will be undertaken in 2007 with up to 20 vehicles. The Leeds study suggests that the system could be introduced initially on taxis, buses and Greater London Authority vehicles. Private motorists could be offered concessions such as lower insurance premiums to fit the technology.

ILLUSION CYCLES TO BE FEATURED ON BIKERNET–We just finished an old school softail with some cool touches. satin black paint, 96-inch black-and-silver S&S, 180 rear tire 5.5 wide rear wheel, 21 up front 2.15 wide w/black rims and 60 polished spokes per wheel, old school black springer, spring solo seat, narrowed 5 gal tanks (flat side) with exposed perfectly flat inside skins, 3-inch open belt, custom made BRM shotgun pipes (satin black), 6 spd trans, custom made fenders to fit w/ quarter inch clearance to wheel in back mounted ridgid style, 2 sissybars to choose from, (one black and one chrome for the ol lady), black forward controls, 12-inch black apes, belt final drive with black pulley, black oil tank w/maltesse cross embossed in sides.

The owner wants to ride it to Sturgis next week. Nice bike for a shoot.

JANKLOW LAWSUIT–I hope they will be more successful with this. Janklow has made a mockery of the court system, had special treatment in jail and is getting his law license back.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The family of a motorcyclist killed when former Rep. Bill Janklow ran a stop sign has filed a new $25 million wrongful death suit against the U.S. government.

Ronald Meshbesher, attorney for Randy Scott’s family, said he filed the federal civil suit Friday in Minneapolis after getting no response from the U.S. House of Representatives on a similar claim filed in 2004.

“It’s a clear-cut case that Janklow was responsible,” Meshbesher said. “The only issue, as I can see it, is the amount the family will get.”

A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney in Minnesota said the office would not comment. Janklow’s lawyer did not return a phone call Monday.

Scott’s family initially sued Janklow in Minnesota state court. But it was determined that since Janklow was on official business, he was protected from any monetary claims by the Federal Tort Claims Act. The law safeguards on-duty federal employees from negligence claims.

The case was then moved to federal court. But the family’s initial claim against the U.S. House went nowhere.

Janklow, 66, resigned from Congress after being convicted in South Dakota of second-degree manslaughter and other charges stemming from Scott’s death.

The 2003 crash ended Janklow’s political career. He had dominated South Dakota politics for three decades, first as attorney general, then as governor and finally as the state’s only member of the U.S. House.

WEIRD NEWS: A BRIGHT IDEA FROM YAMAHA– Yamaha has developed a process for making its bikes glow in the dark. A phosphorescent polymer film, developed by Yamaha of Japan, absorbs sunlight and then releases the energy at night as a soft glow.

In phosphorescent materials, incoming UV light excites electrons to a state that they depart from very slowly, emitting visible light as they do so over many hours.

Yamaha has developed a vacuum pressure process that sticks a thin even layer of phosphorescent plastic film to irregularly shaped fenders, engine covers and cowlings.

HELMET LAW REINTRODUCED IN PENNSYLVANIA– In response to a spike in motorcycle fatalities following repeal of the state helmet law three years ago, a bill to reinstate a mandatory helmet law has been introduced in Pennsylvania.

Motorcycle deaths and injuries are up significantly since 2003, but so is the number of motorcyclists on the highways. These coincidental trends have led authors of a new legislative study to shy away from making definitive conclusions on whether the helmet law repeal itself is responsible for the increase in fatal accidents.

The study on motorcycle accidents by the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee results from a mandate in the 2003 law. Another report is due in 2008. The committee’s report says that both fatalities and serious injuries involving motorcyclists increased one-third during 2004 and 2005 in Pennsylvania.

But the report notes that motorcycle registrations in Pennsylvania jumped to 318,000 from 267,000, a 19 percent increase, during the same period.

The report states: “261 persons died in motorcycle crashes in the two years prior to 2003, compared to 362 persons in the first two years after repeal, an increase of 38.7 percent.

“However, when the number of registered motorcycles is taken into consideration, the average annual fatality rate after repeal of the Helmet Law (5.9 fatalities per 10,000 registered motorcycles in 2004 and 2005) was not substantially higher than the pre-repeal (2001 and 2002) average annual fatality rate of 5.4 fatalities per 10,000 registered motorcycles.”

The report also focuses on serious head injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents, but found that analytical data doesn’t exist to specifically link helmet use with head trauma injuries.

It’s hard to draw any conclusions about what’s really going on from the legislative report, said Charles Umbenhauer, lobbyist for ABATE of Pennsylvania.

But two Keystone lawmakers, Reps. David Frankel, D-Allegheny, and Tony Melio, D-Bucks, have drawn their own conclusions and recently sponsored bills to restore the helmet requirement for adults.

SASHA AND HER NEW FRIEND, WES–This is my new boy-toy for the road. My little 1%erwho watches my back. Every gal needs a boy like thiswhile she prowls the highways happy and sweet, avagabond gypZ exploring unique experiences on thejourney.

Well, I’ve started my new book “Chrome Cowgirl” whichis also my alter-ego anime character. She’s the sideof me that has that wild-west pioneering spirit.Which is why *she* likes having *Wes* around.

Oh, Wes lives in one of the saddle bags and hisoff-spring sized bullets are something I keep handy.More, he’s just a scary, polished dude. All buff. Nopuff.

I hit the road for Sturgis in a week. I’m supposed tobe there now, but I’m in the recording studiorecording my debut album here in Nashville. Yes,truly this is a record that will turn up the noisefactor in this sweet country town. A city girlascends with some alternative ghettoTech Southernrock. Watch out.

At Sturgis, you’ll find me at the Broken Spoke Saloonwhere I work as a Jill-of-All-Trades and a master atit all because you just have to be the best to work atthe B’Spoke! 18 hour days are the norm there but it’sfun because it’s family.

When I return from Sturgis, I begin my apprenticeshipwith a fine motorcycle builder here in Nashville. Why? Because I’ve lived in NYC most of my adult lifeso far and didn’t have a garage. When I was a kid, Iwould love to hang with my dad who is a gearhead andlearn stuff. I’m intoxicated and erotified by thescent and feel of grease. I love the idea of my handsgrasping bare metal and creating something. (That RonFinch just rocks my arts & crafts wow out of the park! He’s a master craftsman.)

So now, I’ll do my apprenticeship and maybe somedaycreate a really, groovy ride from the knowledge Iacquire working with Raullo the builder.

My history? I come from a family of gearheads andmetal masters and arts & crafts junkies…so we’ll seeif there’s any of that high pulse in my ripped upGENES. If not, well there’s plenty to do in amotorcycle shop anyway…

There’s just not enough hours in the day for a littleartsy fartsy chick who surely does not like to fartaround with nothing to do.

Wes, is that you calling, dear?

Well, off I go to feed *Wes*. See ya on the road.

FORMER COLORADO RESIDENT HINES SCORES FIRST NHRA VICTORY OF THE SEASON FOR SCREAMIN’ EAGLE V-ROD TEAM–DENVER (July 17, 2006) – They’ve been working toward this since last summer. The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team earned a victory Sunday during the 27th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. It wasn’t just any win, it was the win the team has been waiting for. Andrew Hines rode his V-Rod entry to the win over Matt Guidera – the first win for Hines since the August event in Memphis last season.

“It was a complete team effort,” Hines said. “We worked so well in the hot conditions that we faced here this weekend and we tuned the bike correctly from the first hit (Sunday). My dad and brother stared at the computer nonstop through qualifying, trying to figure out what it would take to make this bike go fast. It worked.”

It was the sixth career victory in 13 final round appearances for Hines. Not only did Hines earn the win, but he also jumped back into the points lead. It’s the first time the two-time defending NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle has held the top spot in the point standings this season.

“It feels so good to have the first win of the season over and done with,” Hines said. “I’ve had a longer winless streak before, and that was tough on everyone. We still have a lot of races left this season so this is a great time to get a victory in and gain some momentum.”

Hines beat Karen Stoffer and the Geico Suzuki team in the opening round of eliminations. Hines posted a 7.430-second pass at 180.36 mph over Stoffer’s 7.533 at 178.59. Hines then went on to beat Chip Ellis in Round Two. Hines went 7.419 at 180.74 to top Ellis’ 9.087 at 100.27 on the G Squared S&S Buell.

Hines earned a trip to the final round for the third time this season with a semifinal round win over Geno Scali. Hines turned in a 7.424 at 180.74 over Scali’s 7.465 at 179.71 on his Performance Machine Suzuki. Hines beat Guidera and the Rocklin Motorsports/Rocklin Harley-Davidson team in the first final round meeting between the two riders. Hines used a 7.435 at 179.97 to grab the win over Guidera’s 7.566 at 176.63.

“The V-Rod was so consistent I had a great time riding it,” Hines said. “The bike performed so well I didn’t have to make a single correction. We earned four win lights in one day for the first time this season and it’s even better because the V-Rod was just awesome to ride.

“Beating Chip Ellis was almost like winning the race itself. He had been running in the 7.30s all weekend and it was great to get past him that round. This is going to be a great upswing weekend for this team.”

Hines was in second place of the standings before the weekend started, 28 points behind Angelle Sampey and the U.S. Army team. Hines now has a 28-point lead because of the win combined with a second round loss for Sampey.

Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said the team couldn’t ask for better results from one weekend.

quigley

CALIFORNIA HELMET LAW FOUND UNCONSTITUTIONAL ONCE MORE–Quig won in Superior Court again on July 14, 2006. What he did in a nutshell is get the judge (Honorable Michael Barton) to dismiss nine of his helmet tickets as unconstitutional. He then had the judge hold the tenth ticket over for trial, keeping the judge, who actually understands this stuff, involved in the issue.

Now, he also got the judge to agree that the presiding judge (who distributes traffic citations to various judges) should direct any and all helmet violation tickets to judge Barton and the judge agreed that it was in the interest of the court to do so and he thought the presiding judge would have no problem doing that. Quig also suggested that judge Barton then summarily dismiss any of those tickets that might come before him as unconstitutional. The judge wanted to do one thing at a time, and set trial date for Quigs last ticket (actually there are two more tickets) for August 25, 2006. He also put the AG and the DA on notice, so they could not come back and say any trial or ruling was void because they weren’t informed.

The groundwork is set, and the players are getting into uniform. Can’t wait for game day.

By the way, if you go to www.usff.com/print, you can find the transcript for the July 14th hearing and ruling. Hey Kit, Quig continually referred to the DA’s office as weasels. That was the derogatory implication of the word, and had nothing to do with the fun loving party/social association of bikers. I’m not sure if Quig even knows who the Weasels are, but meant nothing derogatory toward them.

STEALTH BIKEWORKS BANNER

BIKERNET STEALTH REPORTER UNDERCOVER IN A NC SHOP–It is a busy week here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS. Last night( Wed.) SBW was the featured bike shop at Kristopher’s bike night. Kristopher’s is a biker friendly bar and grill here in the Charlotte area. The food is top notch and Kristopher, Robbie and all the crew there are first rate. All the staff were sporting SBW t-shirts! Tomorrow night(Fri.) is “Biker Night” at STEALTH BIKE WORKS and Sunday is the 1st Annual “No Class” bike show at SBW. It is a full plate this week!

We have finished the ’78 Shovel re-build, restoration project. The old Shovel is like new and it is super sharp! All of us here are proud of the end result. The old Shovel came to SBW in boxess at the end of last year and was in need of just about everything. In a way we will miss having the Shovel around the shop. It was a lot of work but the end result made it all worthwhile. It was fun bringing the old boy back to life!

This past Saturday a little event took place at SBW that made me stop and realize how lucky I am right now. It made all the effort, all the struggle, all the determination worth while. Let me set the story up. Stewart one of STEALTH BIKE WORKS best customers, we built the 71 Shovel that was pictured here a few weeks back for him had brought Cole to SBW a week earlier. Cole is 6 years old and one of Stu’s firends son. At the time Cole’s bicycle had been stolen and Cole was a little concerned with getting a new bike. Well the Saturday Cole visited the shop he told Max and myself that he wanted us to build him a bike. A couple of days went by and the plan was put into place.

Stu went out and purchased one of those bicycles that looks like a chopper. We did some SBW customizing on it with SBW stickers, a few little other odds and ends. Saturday(7-15-06) Stu, Cole and Cole’s dad arrive at STEALTH BIKE WORKS around noon and we all walk back to our service area and Cole spots the bike and his eyes are as big as saucers and he wants to know whose bike that is and when Stu tells him that it is his, the moment was worth a million! Cole said that we really listened to him and put fire(flames) on the bike.

stealth kid on bike

Then Max and myself got big hugs from Cole, Stu got one too. Cole is bringing the bike to the “No Class” show Sunday. The only thing he was concerned with was how he was going to get the bike here since it is a ride in show. We worked it out so he can get there early and unload and ride around the building. I think everyone will be cool with that? You know it is the little things like this that make STEALTH BIKE WORKS all worth while!

I have to get this one little jab in before closing out. I see where the MOTOR COMPANY is introducing that “Brand New” model, the FXSTC. If I am not mistaken, wasn’t that model already introduced way back around 1984??????????????????????

Until next week, RIDE!

MEES EARNS VICTORY IN VIRGINIA FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON WRECKING CREW–SALUDA, Va. (July 17, 2006) – Jared Mees led Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew Saturday, earning a place on the top spot of the podium during an AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Twins championship competition. Mees – a Clio, Mich., resident – took the Joe Weatherly Memorial event victory, riding his Texter Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle entry to the win at Virginia Motor Speedway.

“It was actually the most important win of them all,” Mees said of his first win of the season, third career. “My team is based in Virginia, and all of (tuner, team owner) Johnny Goad’s friends, family and neighbors were all at the track. To pull off a win there in front of everyone made Johnny look like the fat cat.”

The Lancaster Harley-Davidson supported rider said the win helps ease the pain of some poor finishes earlier in the season – results the team couldn’t avoid.

“We had the lead in a race a few weeks back and then got a flat tire with less than five laps to go,” Mees said. “We’ve had some bad luck like that but it’s turning around. We have buttoned things up and now we can move forward. The win is going to just give this team more confidence. Everything is clicking and we’re lucky to have great dealers and sponsors to help make it all happen.”

The win propelled Mees into the top five of the point standings for the first time this year. Mees is fifth after six Twins events this season and he’s in good company too. Harley-Davidson dealer supported riders dominate the top 10 in AMA Flat Track point standings. Bryan Smith and the Pat Moroney’s/Screamin’ Eagle team are tied for first place with Chris Carr and the Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson team. Screamin’ Eagle factory supported riders Kenny Coolbeth and Rich King are third and fourth, respectively.

Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said this is exactly what the Motor Company was striving for when they decided to revive the Wrecking Crew team concept from the 1920s.

“The concept of the wrecking crew is working and we have our Harley-Davidson supported riders in four of the top five spots,” Paluso said. “From the team standpoint, everyone worked so well together this weekend. This is our second Wrecking Crew win of the season (Coolbeth earned the Lake Odessa, Mich. Win) and second in three events.”

Smith finished in third place during the main event while Coolbeth was sixth.

King did not qualify for the main event for the first time this season. A broken fuel line kept King from moving on to the final race.

“We were the third-fastest in the qualifier and then it went downhill from there,” King said. “We thought we would make a couple of changes to the bike and go faster and we ended up not making the main event because of that. Dirt track racing is like being on a roller coaster and every team has their ups and downs.

“The weekend could have been a lot worse. It’s tough watching the main event instead of racing in the main event but I had three teammates racing out there. Jared won and Chris Carr finished 16th and both of those things helped our team. It would have been nice to gain some ground on Chris, but we just have to put it all behind us, look forward and try to gain some championship points next weekend.”

There are seven GNC Twins events remaining on the schedule before the champion is crowned at the season finale event at Scioto Downs in Columbus, Ohio on Sept. 23.

“It’s so unfortunate what happened to Rich,” Paluso said. “The good news is that Kenny went out and finished well for the factory team. Without gaining any points Rich is still in the top five and he’s anxious to get to the next event. Rich is one of the best at staying focused on his season goals and this won’t get him down.”

The Mees victory shows the strength of the entire class of competition this season. Only Carr has earned multiple victories this season. Carr captured the season opening event win at Springfield, Ill., as well as the win in Syracuse, N.Y. Three other riders, Coolbeth (Lake Odessa, Mich., winner) and Dominic Beaulac (Lima, Ohio) and the Lombardi Harley-Davidson team as well as Mike Hacker and the Doc’s Harley-Davidson team (West Virginia) had posted wins this season before Mees added to the list on Saturday.

“The competition is great and we always have multiple winners throughout the season,” King said. “But what makes this season different is the amount of events. They split the series and separated the singles and the twins categories and now we don’t have as many races in each individual category. That makes each race more and more critical.”

BIKER BUILD-OFF’ PREMIERS–First episode airs August 7th 9 p.m.

Los Angeles, Calif. – July 18th, 2006 – “Biker Build-Off,” the consistently popular series from Original Productions that made custom bike-building a mass culture phenomenon, is back for its fifth season on Discovery. The first of thirteen new episodes will air August 7th at 9 p.m ? then on twelve subsequent Mondays, the last: October 30th 2006.

In season five 26 fabricators will square off in 13 head-to-head competitions. By the time the final detail is applied to the last bikes, these trend-setting builders will have once again set the standard for what makes choppers cool.

“In the six years since we started spotlighting chopper culture, we’ve seen how these bike legends as well as hot-shot newcomers connect with a huge, diverse audience,” says “Biker Build-Off” creator Thom Beers, CEO and Executive of Original Productions, and the man who first saw the television appeal of biker competitions. “With each series, we boost the excitement and celebrate the phenomenon even more. Season five will continue that tradition.” Actually, if truth was allowed to surface, Thom picked up the notion for the Build-off from an interview with Bandit during an Easyriders, Columbus bike show several years ago.

“Wait a minute,” Bandit said this morning. “I’m innocent. I’m not taking credit for anything.”

Watch of a complete report on the new Build-off series on Bikernet in the next couple of days.

FLYING DOG NATION REMEMBERS HUNTER S. THOMPSON- July 18, 2006 was the birthday of our co-conspirator and fellow instigator, Hunter S. Thompson.

Our package designer, longtime friend and artist of Hunter’s books, Ralph Steadman, said this of Dr. Gonzo after his death:

“…He told me 25 years ago that he would feel real trapped if he didn’t know that he could commit suicide at any moment. I don’t know if that is brave or stupid or what, but it was inevitable. I think that the truth of what rings through all his writing is that he meant what he said. If that is entertainment to you, well, that’s OK. If you think that it enlightened you, well, that’s even better. If you wonder if he’s gone to Heaven or Hell -rest assured he will check out them both, find out which one Richard Milhous Nixon went to -and go there. He could never stand being bored. But there must be Football too -and Peacocks…”

So today, we toast and remember Hunter S. Thompson. Hopefully he is somewhere having a beer and stirring shit up.

BIKERNET READERS SHOWCASE FEATURE BIKE– My I.D. Number is 1270 I purchased the bike with only 1400 miles on it, I then had Rodney at Hot rod grafixxx in Greenvile Sc. apply the custom paint. I’ve tried to chrome plate just about everything but the frame. The wheels are invader style from wheels for choppers, and The windshield is made Windvest. The bike now has a little over 13,000 miles on it, and really was money well spent.

DARIN MORRIS BREAKS OUT– This is Darin Morris, I’ve been doing all the fabrication for Central Coast Cycles for the last three years. I recently left Scott and the others to go out on my own. I opened a fabrication shop now in San Jose, California.

I also created a fabrication parts and supply E-commerce website (www.bungking.com) to help those in need of high quality fab parts at rock bottom prices. I am hoping that I can help people on a budget, who are smacked with the sticker shock from most of the products on the market today.

I’m also working on finishing a few show bikes that will be completed in the next month or two.

If you want to give me a shout you can get a hold of me at 408-921-5444.

KENNY ROBERTS AND ROLAND SANDS DESIGN TEAM UP TO UNVEIL A WORLD’S FIRST AT LAGUNA SECA– Former AMA Champion Turned Motorcycle Designer Teams Up with Three-Time World Champion “King” Kenny Roberts to Build the World’s First MotoGP Powered Custom Motorcycle.

La Palma, CA, July 19, 2006 – Motorcycle designer Roland Sands and MotoGP legend Kenny Roberts will unveil the World’s First MotoGP powered custom motorcycle in the Team Roberts paddock at Laguna Seca Raceway on July 21, 2006. The creative collaboration, dubbed the KRV5 Tracker, was first discussed a year ago in the same location, which will now serve as the backdrop for the motorcycle’s much anticipated unveiling. Roberts will take the KRV5 Tracker for an exhibition lap beginning at 12:40pm on Saturday, July 22nd. The motorcycle will be located at the Red Bull “Energy Station” Saturday and Sunday in the pits.

The KRV5 Tracker boasts a 200 horsepower V5 engine, engineered by Team Roberts at their United Kingdom facility. The geometry, stance, and design lines are provided by Sands and are reminiscent of a 1914 Boardtracker.

“This is a bike I’ve wanted to build for a long time,” said Sands. “Building the bike with Kenny’s motor is like a dream come true. With the collision of a MotoGP engine and Boardtrack style it was our intention to create a potent mix of racing tech and iconic style. My goal for this bike is to further blur the lines of what a custom bike can be. I hope the motorcycle industry as a whole will appreciate the results.”

The project unites the unparalleled racing history and technical know-how of Team Roberts with the groundbreaking design of Roland Sands. Roberts was aware of Sands’ road racing pedigree, but it was Sands’ Discovery Channel Biker Build Off episode that turned Roberts onto Sands’ talent as a motorcycle designer and builder. After an introduction to his childhood hero at the 2005 Laguna Seca Moto GP race, one of Roberts’ KRV5 engines was on its way to Sands’ La Palma, CA shop at Performance Machine.

AMERICAN CYCLE AND AMERICAN BAGGER MAGAZINES COMING–Two new mags will hit the market in January. They are being published by a group including Dave Withrow, former publisher of Hot Bike, Street Chopper and Bike Works with Tony Frey, who recently worked for Easyriders publications selling ads. Howard Kelly will also contribute to both magazines.

Okay, I have a bitch. What’s with the name game in this industry. It’s as if there are only a half dozen words you can use to start a motorcycle business. Drives me crazy. There’s already American Dealer, American Rider, American Iron. I get lost. So many company names contain the word Horsepower, Thunder or Throttle. I get ’em all mixed up. I don’t know Full Throttle from Rolling Thunder. Okay, I’ve had my say. How about Withrow’s Wheels Magazine. I wouldn’t lose that one.

BEWARE OF DUMB DRIVERS– The tiny state of Rhode Island still ranks rock bottom in terms of driving knowledge, according to a national test conducted by GMAC Insurance. Oregon drivers answered the most questions correctly.

The 20-question test was based on questions asked in state driver’s license examinations, and revealed that about one in 11 licensed drivers in the United States would fail a state drivers test.

Based on average scores, northwestern states generally ranked highest while the bottom-ranking states were mostly in the northeast. One exception was Vermont, which ranked third. Washington state drivers ranked second. Drivers in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia ranked near the bottom, with D.C. finishing just ahead of Rhode Island.

The test and an accompanying survey were completed by 5,288 licensed drivers including at least 100 from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The survey asked about responses to specific driving situations.

Approximately one in three drivers said they usually do not stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, and at least one out of five drivers did not know that pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right of way. At least one in five also did not know that roads are most slippery when it first starts to rain after a dry spell.
