September 14th is Bike Week at Surfers Paradise in Queensland.Australia’s version of Daytona. BIKERNET STEALTH REPORT– Hey Bandit or whoever is doing the Thursday News here is my report for 7-1-04!

Last weekend was an AMAZING weekend for me! (6-26-04 & 6-27-04) The “Meanest” and I attended the Horse Smoke-Out Saturday and on Sunday we tied the knot at our wedding!

We awoke Saturday morning and rain threatened the Smoke-Out, it was coming down in buckets!As noon approached the skies cleared and the sun came out and it turned out to be a beautiful day.

I haven’t heard any official numbers for attendance but I would have to guess around 10,000 for the weekend. The Smoke-Out is the one event where “old school choppers rule!” There were knuckles, pans, shovels, evos and even twin cam chopppers. I am a pan freak and I was in pan heaven for a day! Unlike other events and bike shows there is not a lot of bragging going on between riders, they let their bikes speak for themselves. Speaking of the bike show there were top notch chops there, but the fairgrounds and parking areas are one HUGE bike show.

This event is for the hardcore, bare bones, take no prisoners choppers and their riders. No love seats or sofas for seats on these bikes! Every year the Smoke-Out and the bikes and the people in attendance take me back to when I first got into bikes and I can’t wait to get to the event every year to see bikes that remind me of the bikes you used to see in “Easyriders” and in Dave Mann centerfolds. By the way whatever happened to Easyriders? That is another story for another time.

Another thing about the Smoke-Out is seeing old friends and making new ones. I saw Lee Clemens from Departure Bike Works, Kendall Johnson, Fab Kevin, Mike Marquart from Redneck Engineering and Mike Phillips from Grandeur Cycles. I also ran into my friend Jumper from Marshall, VA. It was good to see you all! Thanks to you guys for the Run For Breath Awards you made, they are all great! Speaking of The Run For Breath “In Memory of Justin Pullin,” it is fast approaching, July 25th, here in Charlotte.

Everyone at “The Horse” deserves a big round of applause, especially “Edge” for a great event! See you next year!

Now for Sunday! Yeah the “Meanest” and I got married and everything went as smooth as silk! We probably had 300 people in attendance following a poker run to benefit our friend Angela who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It was biker wedding all the way and the “Meanest” has never looked better! She was HOT! I rode my 91 springer softail (Skeletor) and he even got a flower! One thing that made the wedding special was that the people I respect and feel the most for were there, my riding partners, the people I work with.

I want to thank my son Blair (my best man), my best friend Brad, and the Meanest’s daughter Stephanie(maid of honor), Jenna, her best friend and everyone else who helped make this a very special day, without any of you it would not have been the same, a BIG thanks!

One last thing, if any of you think the Discovery Bike Build offs don’t make people think about building a bike, think again. My son Blair told me at the wedding that he wants to build a chopper! He said that he had watched the build offs all week. The bike building and chopper bug has bitten him! Before this he had shown little interest. So you see these shows are good for something!That is it, I have taken enough time for this week, but you really got two “Stealth” reports in one and it didn’t cost you anything extra!

It was 50 years ago this summer that a Roseau farm equipment and metal shop incorporated as Polaris Industries. In the late-1960s the original Thrill Team performed breathtaking stunts and precision riding at snowmobile races and winter festivals. Busy Schedule of Activities in Roseau
The 50th celebration kicked off in Roseau on Friday night, June 18, with a historical review that featured vintage video clips and rich storytelling from long-time employees. Panelists who presented anecdotes from company history included original partners Edgar Hetteen and David Johnson, and Mike Hetteen, a son of the third original partner, the late Allan Hetteen. The past and the present were represented by Harley Jensen and Tom Tiller. Jensen is the oldest living Polaris snowmobile customer, having purchased sled No. 2 in early 1956, while Tiller is the current President and CEO of Polaris.

RIGID FRAME RICHARD ? SMSO REPORT–Just got back from NC, been in a truck since 11am yesterday. I believe I have some info on the painter at the house. I will check when I go back home had to come to work. We lost about 2 – 3 hours due to rain and wrecks in Georgia yesterday.

Smoke Out was great met T-Bear, CJ, Cat, Fab Kevin, Jon, etc… Except Stealth, unfortunately we missed each other on Saturday. No wedding I had to be back for a meeting with lawyers this afternoon.

BIKERNET ART REVIEW–A couple attending an art exhibition at the National Gallery were staring ata portrait that had them completely confused. The painting depicted threevery black and totally naked men sitting on a park bench. Two of the figureshad black penises, but the one in the middle had a pink penis.

The curator of the gallery realized that they were having troubleinterpreting the painting and offered his assessment. He went on for nearlyhalf an hour explaining how it depicted the sexual emasculation ofAfrican-Americans in a predominately white, patriarchal society. “In fact,”he pointed out, “some serious critics believe that the pink penis alsoreflects the cultural and sociological oppression experienced by gay men incontemporary society.”

After the curator left, a young man in a West Virginia T-shirt approached!the couple and said, “Would you like to know what the painting is reallyabout?”

“Now why would you claim to be more of an expert than the curator of thegallery?” asked the couple.

“Because I’m the guy who painted it,” he replied.”In fact, there are no African-Americans depicted at all. They’re just threeWest Virginia coal-miners, and the guy in the middle went home for lunch.

BONNEVILLE SALT FLAT CONTENDERS– THE INTERNATIONAL SPEED TRIALS by BUB, to be held on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, in September this year, offer the opportunity to set World as well as US National records.

However, for entrants intent on trying to set such a record the mandatory 60-day notice of an attempt expires on July 1st.

By that time, the FIM (Federation Internationale Motocycliste) must be notified and this will be done through the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association).

The registration procedure for the FIM is different to other organizations and BUB Enterprises will be happy to explain should this be necessary.

After some negotiation, BUB Enterprises has managed to agree a fee of $100 for this service, but that sum must be paid by the entrant.

All other expenses are already contained within the event entry fee.

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE TEAM MAINTAINS PRO STOCK BIKE POINTS LEAD–Team Saddened by Loss of Fellow NHRA Competitor Darrell RussellMADISON, Ill. (June 27, 2004) – The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines drag racing team worked through its most challenging weekend of the season and placed riders GT Tonglet and Andrew Hines in the elimination rounds of the 8th Annual Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals at Gateway International Raceway. The event was marred by the death of Top Fuel driver Darrell Russell who suffered a fatal crash during the second round of eliminations.

“It was a tough weekend for our team on many levels. Of course, everyone on the team was deeply affected by the death of Darrell Russell and first and foremost wishes to extend our sympathy to the Russell family and the Amato Racing team on this terrible loss,” said Screamin’ Eagle Racing Manager Anne Paluso. “We struggled a bit this weekend, but a tragedy like this certainly puts things in perspective.”

The Screamin’ Eagle team was notified on June 22 that NHRA imposed a rule amendment which raised the minimum weight for Pro Stock Bike pushrod V-Twins from 575 pounds to 615 pounds, effective immediately. This forced the Screamin’ Eagle team to qualify for the event without testing with the additional 40 pounds of weight in place.

After being among the top qualifiers for each event this season, Hines (7.201/186.98) and Tonglet (7.201/185.41) qualified 14th and 15th to make the 16-bike field at Gateway. Antron Brown was top qualifier with a run of 7.086/187.68, a new Pro Stock Bike track ET record.

“This sudden rule change put the Screamin’ Eagle team under the gun for the race weekend,” said Paluso. “Adding 40 pounds to the Screamin’ Eagle V-Rods changed the dynamics of the bikes and we’ll continue to evaluate the effect of the extra weight.”

In the first round of eliminations, Hines (7.166/185.95) had his best run of the weekend and scored a hole-shot win over Angelle Savoie (7.139/185.66), who had a 0.073 reaction time to 0.011 for Hines. In his first-round race, Tonglet (7.298/183.97) was first off the line but lost to Craig Treble (7.124/191.35).

In the second round, Hines again tried to cut a good light, knowing that was his only chance to win. A red light start by Hines gave Michael Phillips the win, but given the performance disadvantage, Hines would have lost even with a perfect light. In the final, Steve Johnson (7.220/183.34) scored a hole-shot win over Treble (7.129/186.28).

After seven rounds of NHRA Pro Stock Bike competition, Hines leads the class with 655 points, 182 points ahead of Shawn Gann, in second place with 473 points. Geno Scali is third with 446 points, while Tonglet is fourth with 424 points.

The next Pro Stock Bike event on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series is the 25th Annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, July 16-18, at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colo.

BARNES PUTS BUELL SIXTH AT BRAINERD AMA FORMULA XTREMEKosco Buell Rider Cracks Top-Ten in Season Points Despite Missing First Two RoundsBRAINERD, Minn. (June 26, 2004) – Kosco Buell/Innovative Motorcycle Research rider Michael Barnes had his best result of the season with a sixth-place finish aboard his Buell Firebolt at the Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme race during the AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship Series at Brainerd International Raceway. The strong showing moved him into ninth in points.

Barnes qualified ninth for the event and despite a bad start in the 13-lap race, moved up steadily on the high-speed, three-mile-long road course as others faltered.

“We’ve got good momentum right now,” said Kosco Buell race manager Rich Cronrath. “We’ve finally got a good baseline and we’ve made some real progress. Consistency is the key and our best finishes are ahead of us.”

Hal’s Performance Advantage Buell rider Mike Ciccotto had a disappointing weekend at Brainerd. Mike qualified 12th due to some fuel injection mapping issues, but had the bike dialed in for the race. He got a fantastic start, and had moved up to fifth place by lap four, but a cracked oil fitting caused a leak that made Mike pull off for a DNF. The race was won by American Honda factory rider Miguel Duhamel, who leads the series after seven rounds with 250 points. Erion Honda rider Jake Zemke is second with 235 points. With his steady performance at Brainerd, Barnes is now ninth with 111 points.

“It’s great to see the Kosco team crack the top-ten in overall points, especially since they didn’t even compete in the first two rounds,” said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “Both the Hal’s and Kosco dealer teams are racing hard in a very competitive national class, and they have gained the respect of all their competitors.”

AMA Formula Xtreme is a class open to highly-modified motorcycles with 600cc four-cylinder engines or larger-displacement V-Twin engines. The next stop on the AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship schedule is July 9-11 at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, Calif.

BEMISDERFER PILOTS BUELL TO VIR WIN, PADS THUNDERBIKE POINTS LEADBilansky Tied for Second; Defending Champ Estok in Deep Points HoleDANVILLE, Va. (June 27, 2004) – Harding Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Bemisderfer rode a Buell Firebolt to victory in the Formula USA National Thunderbike event at Virginia International Raceway and increased his series points lead as other contenders for the title failed to mount a challenge to the rider from Greencastle, Pa. After five of eight events on the 2004 Thunderbike series, Bemisderfer enjoys a healthy 39-point lead.

“My team did their job in giving me a good bike and I was really happy with the set up,” said Bemisderfer. “We’ve got a nice points lead, but we’re not going to lay back. We’re going to three new tracks and we want to win ’em all.”

Tripp Nobles, riding a Buell Firebolt backed by Tilley’s Buell took the pole in qualifying for the 16-lap Thunderbike national, but finished 17th after leaving the race on lap six with a mechanical problem. Bemisderfer qualified fourth aboard his back up bike, while his teammate and defending Thunderbike champion, David Estok, started the race in sixth position but crashed just before the race was red-flagged and later restarted. Estok took the restart from the back of the grid and set the fastest lap of the race as he worked his way forward. He retired from the race on lap seven with a mechanical problem and finished in 16th position.

Bemisderfer battled with Suzuki riders Derek Keys and David Yaakov, with the lead changing hands every lap. Bemisderfer took the lead for good on the last lap while Keys finished second and Yaakov third. Hal’s Performance Advantage Buell rider Dan Bilansky finished sixth, Appleton Buell/Hoban Brothers rider Jeff Johnson was seventh and Josh Guyer of Buell of Bloomington was eighth, all were aboard Buell Firebolts.

Bemisderfer leads the Thunderbike National series with 85 points. Bilansky is tied for second with Suzuki rider Darren Danilowicz at 46 points, while Estok has faded to fifth with 41 points. The next stop on the Formula USA National Thunderbike Series is Aug. 13-15 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala.

The Formula USA National Thunderbike series is a horsepower-to-weight ratio restricted class, open to a variety of production-based motorcycles. Buell-mounted riders competing in the eight-event 2004 Thunderbike series are racing for a share of the $70,500 contingency fund posted by Buell Motorcycle Company and Buell Riders Adventure Group (BRAG).

I ran across a master mechanic, in Oahu, Hawaii, at ProStreet, who recently produced the first Choppers Only Show in Wakiki.He explained the differences between the Evolution configuration andthe Shovelhead and how you can alter your Shovel for reliability andbetter performance. I was intrigued, grabbed my camera girl and wentafter the formula.

Note the heavier/thicker Shovel wheel.

First off the flywheels are 4 pounds lighter, saving 8pounds off the lower end. That’s 8 less pounds the engine is forcedto lug around.

“You can go either way with the flywheels,” Deaconsaid, “although it’s easier to just swap them. The new set willalready be correctly clearanced and have a better rod package. Setscan be ordered from S&S in this configuration.”

This shot shows a performance flat top job, a standardShovelhead piston and a Sportster unit. Imagine the spark trying toclimb over that Sportster piston dome.

Next, Evolutions use flat-top pistons for an immediateburn. Shovelheads are equipped with domed pistons and one spark plug.The flame must travel up and over the dome. That can be correctedwith two plugs, but a better way to go is to use the flat-top pistonconfiguration like Evolutions.

“Compression ratio is based on howthe bike will be ridden and how much HP is desired,” Deacon told me.”Use flat top pistons or J&E 30 degree entry pistons with S.T.Dbathtub chamber heads.”

The valve train in an Evolution is lighter with smallershaft diameter valves with a larger diameter face for better flow andvolume. “Use Kibblewhite or Manley thin stemmed valves,” Deaconmuttered and went back to work.

A company called Precision Machine offers a conversion kitto use Evo valves in your Shovelhead. “The kit contains the keepersto use Shovel upper collars,” Deacon added. “Also use cast ironvalve guides from Rowe for your specific application.”

Here’s a goddamn stock Shovel valve, lifter and lifter block.An Evo unit will fit right in.

The hydraulic lifters in Shovels are weak and oil poorly.The Bolt pattern for Shovels and Evo lifter blocks are the same, soyou can replace the Shovel lifter blocks with Evo units and a muchlarger automotive type lifter to improve valve train operation.

Here’s the updated Evo valve train configuration. It will boltright in.

Deacon likes S&S oil pumps and doesn’t much care for JIMSreplacement lifters. “Yes, use an S&S oil pump,” Deacon snapped andraised a large torque wrench in my direction. “You will get morevolume for better top end oiling. With more volume you need morescavenging and the S&S pump delivers this as well. Also, Baisleyoffers an overdrive pump gear to provide even more pressure.

With the above mods your Shovel won’t work so hard to spinthose heavy flywheels and the valve train will be lighter, moreproficient and flow more fuel, air and exhaust. The pistons will firemore efficiently and won’t be subject to as much heat. The onlyaspect of the Evolution that you might miss will be the flow abilityof the head design.

DALLAS OFFICER FIRED FOLLOWING DWI CHARGE–FORT WORTH, Texas — A veteran Dallas police officer is now off the streets after being arrested for drunken driving.

The department fired senior corporal James Mismash on Tuesday following his arrest. The narcotics officer is facing a DWI charge.

Mismash has been on administrative leave since his arrest last month. Mismash spent 18 years on the Dallas police force.

DWI PROSECUTOR FACES DWI CHARGES–LACONIA ? A man whose job is to prosecute alcohol-related offenses was arrested at Bike Week at Weirs Beach early yesterday, charged with drunken driving, according to State Police.

Assistant County Attorney Wayne P. Coull of Laconia was arrested by State Police after midnight (early Saturday morning), behind the Dexter Plaza and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, first offense, said State Police Sgt. Dale St. Laurent.

BIKERNET CARIBBEAN REPORT–As always, a bit late with the news, but at least I’m making something up. And making it up is the truth, nothing but the truth.By this time next week I’ll be in the shores of Oahu, hanging out with friends, having a good time, surfing and just getting away from all the madness. At the same time we’ve had a smorgasbord of bike related stuff on TV, I have not been able to watch it all, but have been taping for further viewing…. I have seen a lot of the stuff written on Your Shot, some like it some don’t, kind of the same way it is with the stuff I write. But you know what, all those shows, the same as what I write, is here to stay no matter what people say. No matter how much it’s hated or liked, it won’t go away. I much rather see the build off’s and Motorcycle mania every single week, as bad or good you might think they are, than those Monday shows, (need I mention any names?).

Sure not everyone has the personality, nor charisma that Jesse, Billy and Indian Larry have, but they all got something in their own right, and the best deal of all is that we all learn something or see how stuff is done by others. More so the mere mortals that have not a drop of comprehension towards what it takes to actually put a bike together. So bitch all you want or praise all you want. Like Bandit told me, the important part is to catch the audience…and that has been accomplished.

By the way and along the same lines, I don’t know how many times I’ve told people that read my stuff, not to take me too seriously, then again I have been very fortunate and in a weird way, proper, not to resort to calling names to anyone. Then again, no need to stoop that low. Fifth grade was such a long time ago…..

I’m in the process of getting a new laptop, if that happens before Hawaii, I will make sure to send photos and such, as everything is happening, I don’t know when Bandit and the girls will be joining us there, but if I can, I’ll send them.

Going back to the TV shows, don’t take everything as the gospel either, remember, the editing changes a few things here and there, so if they can go with a certain flaw, or a certain character, they will go with it. Also, we must be reminded that all those shows are not just for motorcycle people, they are for everyone else as well, so maybe what does not appeal to us, might appeal to others, and such is the way things are.

I’m out of here. By the next report my Sturgis Bobber should be almost complete and I will leave it to our readers if you want to see it here first, or just wait after Sturgis. Then again, it’s up to Michael Lichter as well……

CV CARB TIPS–We mounted a Fantasy In Iron air cleaner on Busters Sportster and asked Pablo how to mess with the stock CV carb. Here’s what we had to say, ” We just mounted a new Fantasy in Iron air cleaner on a buddy’sbike. Can I adjust the CV carb? It seems to cough off the line,but the plugs are near perfect. One (the rear) is a little darkaround the base. Gimme some guidance, oh master.”

Here’s what the master told us: Check to see if the alum. plug has been removed from the idlesmixture boss under the carb all the way back by the carb spigot.This is where the carb plugs in the rubber gasket on the manifold.If its gone you can adjust the idle mixture just like any carb. Ifit’s not you have to remove it by drilling it out with a 5/32 dia.drill. Then screw in a sheet metal screw in the plug and pull itout.

Be carefull if you have to drill the plug. It’s only about a 1/8″thick. It’s easy to drill into the brass idle mixture screw. Sodrill easy Bro.

Most of the times if the carb is stock it needs a #45 slow jetwiththe mixture screw 2 to 3 turns out. Stock is #42 on the slow jet.If you have a high flow exhaust and air cleaner you’ll need a 180or185 main jet. You can also remove the slide, drill the vacuum porton the bottom to 1/8″ dia., this hole is off center. Try cutting 2coils of the spring for starters.

If the slides rubber gasket expands and won’t fit when trying toput the top back on stick the fucker in the freezer for 30 minutesor so. This shrinks the rubber diaphragm.

You can shorten the pump rod some. That will shorten the stroke of the accelerator rod. Again try adjusting the air fuel. Then tell me what the jets are in the carb if you can. You are at Sea level, if I remember right.

–PabloP.S. don’t put a fucken dynojet kit in it!! It makes your gas go tohell and doesn’t help performance. By the way how much is gas onthe Left Coast??

MILWAUKEE WORLD FESTIVAL BOARD, OUTLAWS MOTORCYCLE CLUB ANNOUNCE TEMPORARY AGREEMENT– Motorcycle club’s lawsuit to be delayed:

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee World Festival Board of Directors and Michael F. Hupy, the attorney for three Outlaws Motorcycle Club members who filed a lawsuit against the organization, today announced an agreement to temporarily stay the case. As part of the agreement, the club members will delay litigation while Milwaukee World Festival implements an informal policy that individuals will not be removed from Summerfest solely for wearing Outlaws apparel. The policy will remain in effect until October, when both sides will review the matter. Festival security retains the right to eject any attendee – regardless of their clothing – for disruptive behavior or conduct.

The three Outlaws members allege in their lawsuit that they were unfairly ejected from the last year’s Summerfest for refusing to remove or cover apparel with the club symbol. Mr. Hupy said: “This is a fair agreement for both sides. The Outlaws have the freedom to wear their club logo. Milwaukee World Festival maintains the ability to enforce its security policies and help ensure a safe festival. It’s a win-win situation.” Hupy noted that he did not charge a fee to his clients and worked on this matter on a pro bono basis.

Howard Schnoll, president of Milwaukee World Festival, Inc., said his board is comfortable with the arrangement. “This is a workable agreement, and our Board is willing to put it in place on a trial basis for this year’s Summerfest,” he said. “Our goal is to create safe and fun events that all festival goers can enjoy, and this agreement will allow us to do that.”

If, after the 2004 festival season, The Outlaws and Milwaukee World Festival are both willing to continue the informal policy into the future, the agreement calls for the lawsuit to be dropped.

LOUISIANA LEGISLATURE BRINGS BACK MOTORCYCLE HELMET LAW– BATON ROUGE, La. — Helmets will again be mandatory attire for motorcycle riders on Louisiana highways beginning Aug. 15.The state Senate voted 26-12 on Thursday to reinstate the mandatory helmet law that was repealed in 1999 at the behest of then-Gov. Mike Foster.

“We had a governor at that time that felt that his head was hard enough that the didn’t have to wear one and nobody else should have to wear one,” joked Sen. Joel Chaisson, D-Destrehan. Chaisson is the Senate sponsor of the bill by Rep. Clara Baudoin, D-Carencro.

Current Gov. Kathleen Blanco supported reinstatement and is expected to sign the bill.Baudoin’s bill had languished on the House calendar for weeks but got a boost when Blanco lent her support. It passed the House on Tuesday.

Debate in the Senate — as in the House — centered on dueling statistics and an adult’s right to choose.”This is common-sense legislation that will save lives,” Chaisson said. He cited statistics found in a recent federal study to back up his claim.

Fifty-three motorcyclists were killed in Louisiana in 1997 and 1999, the two years before the repeal. That number grew to 111 in the first two full years after the repeal, 2000 and 2001, according to a study released last year by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Sen. Robert Barham, R-Oak Ridge, opposed the bill and noted LSU statistics showing the number of deaths per accident has not increased.

“We can only go so far with taking away choice from people,” Barham said.

But other senators argued that, despite a law requiring helmet-less riders to carry insurance, many riders are uninsured, meaning public hospitals often are left with the cost of treating injured riders. “It’s no longer a matter of public choice. We all pay,” said Sen. Robert Marionneaux, D-Livonia.

The Foster-backed 1999 law allowed anyone over 18 to ride without a helmet if they had at least $10,000 of bodily injury insurance.

Several organizations of motorcycle enthusiasts opposed reinstatement of the helmet law, claiming helmets impair vision and hearing and can contribute to accidents. They said better education and training of motorcyclists is needed to reduce accidents.

Chaisson noted that he has legislation pending in the House to require that new motorcycle operators go through approved courses, and that all motorcycle operators be required to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s licenses and have an “M” sticker affixed to their license plate to signify that they have the proper endorsement.

I forgot the name of the company , but I’m sure they were out of Kentucky. Hope seeing the pic will ring a bell for someone. The paint has the ghost flames with small skulls in the flames.

I’ve had this bike picture saved on my computer for over a year. Had no idea who built it. I saw it at ” broadway at the beach ” in Myrtle Beach in the spring. SCREAMIN? EAGLE TEAM UNDER THE GUN AT GATEWAY–NHRA Rule Change Adds 40lbs. of Weight; Timing Forces Team to Test during Race

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (June 24, 2004) – The Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team will be under the gun at Gateway International Raceway this weekend since the NHRA announced on Tuesday night an unprecedented rule amendment which changed the minimum weight for Pro Stock Bike push rod V-Twins from 575 pounds to 615 pounds. The rule change essentially becomes effective June 25 for the start of this weekend?s Sears Craftsman Nationals and does not give the team enough time to test the 40-pound weight increase before the start of the event.

?NHRA?s decision came as quite a shock to us. The timing and magnitude of the rule change is very frustrating at this point in the season, and since the team leaves for Gateway today, we will have no time to test before the race. But this team has overcome so much adversity, we believe we?ll get through this,? said Screamin? Eagle Racing Manager Anne Paluso.

?It will be tough to overcome the forty pound penalty and get back to a competitive position. Short term, we are very concerned about the effect of that much weight on the bike’s launch and down track performance. Without time for testing, we will have to use some or all of this weekend’s qualifying sessions to assure we still have competent motorcycles,? said Bob Farchione, Harley-Davidson Parts and Accessories chief engineer.

After six rounds of NHRA Pro Stock Bike competition, Screamin? Eagle rider Andrew Hines leads the class with 604 points, 185 points ahead of Suzuki rider Shawn Gann, in second with 419 points. Screamin? Eagle rider GT Tonglet is third with 393 points.

ACCURATE ENGINEERING CLEARS ITS NAME– The Discovery Channel with their biker build off?s where well know custom bike builders compete against each other to assemble motorcycles from scratch, ride them together to a specific location and then have them judged by people at the event has become a very popular show.

They shoot days and days of footage and edit to a one hour or less show, so a lot of it is never seen. Some of it is repetitious in that there are only so many way to build a motorcycle but they must still keep the audiences interest.

This is done a few ways and one of them is to give the builders a time frame. This puts the pressure on and also taxes those that are supplying parts like engines and doing paint work. Every one has a schedule and expected to stay to it.

On a show that aired Monday August 21st where Chica from California went against Hank Young of Marietta Georgia the Discovery Channel moved the shoot date up for Young.

He was waiting for one of the Custom Built Engines from Berry Wardlaw of Accurate Engineering in Dothan Alabama which have become the choice of many of the shows winners.

In the show Young calls Accurate Engineering looking for the engine and hams up about not knowing where it is or what he was going to do.

The Right Thing To Do Would Have Been To Explain That Discovery Had Changed The Schedule. But that is not as interesting to the viewer as hamming it up.

The fact is the engine was not due for delivery for another four days. Berry worked 36 hours straight to finish it and had two of his people deliver it.

IT WAS THERE ON THE DATE IT WAS PROMISED!

There was a little blurb at the end when Young was riding through the parking lot about how good the engine sounded but you really had to be listening to hear it over the exhaust of the bike.

I have known Berry Wardlaw for a long time and I knew it was not like him to miss a delivery date, so I called him and found out what the true story was.

Maybe the people at Discovery need to stop by his shop one of these days to see what actually goes into building one of these show winning engines.

K&N FILTERS LOSES STAFF MEMBER–Tom Cates, Senior Sales Manager, Powersports Division, of K&N Filters lost a long battle with cancer and passed away on 18th June, 2004.His major motorcycle interest was the flat track scene, and in 1955 he became a rookie to begin seven years of regular competition.From rookie status, he progressed to the National ranks in 1957, riding #32, and continued to ride under that number until 1962.He achieved success in both series championships and individual meetings.

The Flat Track community will pay its own tribute to Tom by dedicating the meeting at Del Mar to his memory.After employment by BSA and Triumph he was asked by Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald, the founders of K&N, to join the company as General Manager.

Tom maintained his interest in dirt track as K&N was involved in the sport as it helped out with sponsorship schemes.Another of Tom’s interests was flying and, as a private pilot, Tom often flew his own experimental airplane.

A memorial service is to be held at K&N Engineering Headquarters, 1455 Citrus Avenue, Riverside, California on Saturday, 26th June, between 2pm and 4pm where Don Emde is scheduled to pay tribute.The family has requested no gifts or flowers, but donations to the City of Hope and Beckman Research Institute.Donations can be made online through http://www.cityofhope.org/donate donate or by mail to City of Hope, Central Processing, 1500 E Duarte Road, Duarte, California 91010. MUST IDENTIFY YOURSELF– In what may become a major boost to US law enforcement and antiterrorism efforts, the US Supreme Court Monday upheld a Nevada law that makes it a criminal offense for anyone suspected of wrongdoing to refuse to identify himself to police.

Civil libertarians see the decision as a significant setback. And it remains unclear to what extent it may open the door to the issuing of national identification cards or widespread identity operations keyed to terrorist profiling at bus terminals, train stations, sports stadiums, and on city streets.

“It’s a green light to explore the bounds of how much personal information can be demanded on pain of arrest,” says Timothy Lynch of the Cato Institute in Washington. “It also gives a green light to perhaps the Congress to move with a national law.”

Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, says the decision has clear implications for the war on terror. “We know identification continues to be one of the key demands of government agencies involved in homeland security,” he says. “[This decision] – depending on how broad it is – could open the door to new demands for identification.”

The ruling marks the first time the nation’s highest court has endorsed a provision compelling citizens to reveal information in a citizen-police encounter that may become a police investigation. In effect, the majority justices say that in most cases it is no significant intrusion for police to request – and a suspect to provide- his name.

JUDGE REJECT SLAVE TRAUMA AS DEFENSE FOR KILLING BOY–HILLSBORO — A Portland lawyer says suffering by African Americans at the hands of slave owners is to blame in the death of a 2-year-old Beaverton boy

Randall Vogt is offering the untested theory, called post traumatic slave syndrome, in his defense of Isaac Cortez Bynum, who is charged with murder by abuse in the June 30 death of his son, Ryshawn Lamar Bynum. Vogt says he will argue — “in a general way” — that masters beat slaves, so Bynum was justified in beating his son.

The slave theory is the work of Joy DeGruy-Leary, an assistant professor in the Portland State University Graduate School of Social Work. It is not listed by psychiatrists or the courts as an accepted disorder, and some experts said they had never heard of it.

DeGruy-Leary testified this month in Washington County Circuit Court that African Americans today are affected by past centuries of U.S. slavery because the original slaves were never treated for the trauma of losing their homes; seeing relatives whipped, raped and killed; and being subjugated by whites.

AUSTRALIAN BIKERNET REPORT–All bike trips start out for a different reason, mine was to have an interview at the American Consulate in Sydney N.S.W., which is a 2,000 klm round trip to renew my visa to the States for a two week biking trip around the Arizona & Nevada deserts with Kerry. Originally we were to go to the “Choppers Only Show ” in Hawaii, however, we didn’t think the visa would come through so we cancelled the trip. And that’s how my journey started.

While I’m organising myself I get a call from Pete to tell me about Crystal’s Party ( another good buddy ) so I decided what’s another couple of thousand klms?? I chose the coastal route, which of course is longer but way more scenic, and I was cruisin’. I’ve ridden this road many times over the the years, on Harleys, old Trumpys, B.M.Ws even an early 250 Suzuki which was a bloody long time ago. I couldn’t fault the Electra Standard, it performed beautifully. The trip went well and I arrived In Melbourne on Friday nite freezing my arse off, but it was cool surprising everyone at the party. It was a busy weekend catching up with family and friends. I was out of there on Monday morning headed for Sydney. Ran short of juice in N.S.W. so I detoured in to Glenrowan the home of Australia’s most notorious bushranger, Ned Kelly, where I came across an impressive statue of him.

Arriving in Sydney, I checked in to my Hotel with fantastic views of the city and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, cracked a coldie and took it all in. The next morning saw me up bright and early for the Consulate appointment – that done I checked out the city of Sydney – lots of history there. If you’re ever in Sydney the “Bridge Walk” is a must, it’s unbelievable, you can see forever up on the top of the bridge – I mean right up ON TOP of the bridge with the traffic speeding by below – sensational.

I left Sydney at 4am, no bloody traffic and I was stoked. I had a great ride on a picture perfect day and arrived home at 7pm – after an 1100 klm. day on the electra – life is good!!! That was a few weeks ago, and now I really know I’m a lucky bastard ’cause I got a call today saying my Visa is good to go, and my good little wife told me to get my arse into gear, book a flight and get to the Choppers Only Show in Hawaii. Didn’t have to tell me twice!! I’m on my way next week. Don’t know where I’m staying yet, but that’s a minor detail. I look forward to catching up with you guys. Couldn’t organise for both of us to get outta here at such short notice – so I’ll be seeing you next week and Kerry sends her best.

THE STEALTH REPORT–This is the last time I will do the “STEALTH” report as a bachelor! As of Sunday (6-27-04) I will be a married man, again! They say the third time is the charm and I really feel this is finally the right time. I always wondered when people say “that is what THEY say” who in the hell are THEY? Anyway, I have a lot going on right now, so let’s get to it!

Bandit has spoken of the woes of moving in the not so distant past. “THE MEANEST” and I are dealing with the moving woes right now. We are selling two houses and buying one, we are combining two homes into one. It is an adventure. As of now we don’t know where “STEALTH” headquarters will be but we have a few ideas . I keep looking for a house with an indoor wash bay for our bikes and all “THE MEANEST” does is give me a funny look! I have the garage pictured in my mind, the walls should resemble a fine motorcycle museum, with my Dave Mann collection displayed flawlessly along with a number of Easyrider posters. Hopefully the garage will sport a new bike lift also, I am getting to the age where crawling around on the garage floor isn’t as appealing as it once was. I am thinking of a new Craftsman toolbox also since mine has seen better days!

The colors of the garage may be done in the BIKERNET logo colors red, orange, yellow and of course with flames on the walls because as “THE MEANEST” and I always say “Flames never go out of style!” The new digs will also feature an all biker room. I almost said all Harley room, I think “all biker” room fits a lot better. In this room there will be an entertainment center that revolves around biker movies, biker music and anything that is biker. This is where some of my “most prized possessions” will reside such as my autographed poster of “Outlaw Justice,” yeah that is right signed by the BIG guy himself, Mr. Bandit along with all of his books he has signed, Prize Possession, Outlaw Justice and Orwell. It will also display Run For Breath memorabilia. Just a quick reminder, the 6th Annual Run For Breath “In Memory of Justin Pullin” will be held here in Charlotte July 25th. The room should be a great room!

The “MEANEST”and I are not going on a honeymoon right away, sometime in September we are planning on an escape from work. The Caribbean keeps coming up, are you listening Jose? Oh by the way the wedding is the day after the Smoke-Out at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Pavilion, next to Tom Johnson Camping Center on Speedway Boulevard in Concord, just 20 minutes away from the site of the Smoke-Out, so if you are hanging around Sunday, ALL of you are invited to the “BIKER WEDDING OF THE CENTURY!” We would be honored to have you as our guest.

JOSE GETS ATTACKED– Bandit, I enjoy reading your articles about your trips to rallies and events. I had to write after reading this article from Jose.

He spends a good part of the article bitching about the riders in Daytona that spend the money that makes the event possible. He complains about ?throttle twisters?, but then talks about how Bling Bling broke his bike from doing burnouts and wheelies and how bros helped to fix it. Is this fucking guy a hypocrite or what? He bitches about ?newbies? ruining it for everyone, but when it?s his buddy doing it it?s fucking okay.

Then he talks about how the ?industry? guys have no time to themselves? this fucking event isn?t for them to take a vacation. It?s for the fans to spend their money on their products and merchandise. I?m sure he wasn?t bitching when he was selling crap to the crowds.

I fucking hate hypocrites almost as much as I hate cry baby bitches like Jose. Stop your fucking crying Jose. If you don?t like the crowds at Daytona stop fucking going? I know they won?t miss you there.

I don?t even want to get into his ?cool? ?Not cool? list except to mention his ?Cool: Seeing a cop giving souvenir tickets?? real fucking nice asshole! I hope you and your burnout buddies get a fucking ticket next year.

VENGEANCE MOTORCYCLES– is teaming with country music superstar Tim McGraw for a charity ride to benefit The Raven Drum foundation.The Raven Drum Foundation is a Los-Angeles based non-profit organization co-founded in 2001 by Def Leppard’s Rick Allen. The group aims to provide free educational programs in the arts and opportunities for personal growth in times of adversity. Mr. Allen lost an arm in an auto accident in 1984.

On July 24, 2004, ride participants will assemble at Classic American Motorcycles, a Vengeance motorcycle dealer in Thousand Oaks, California.

After departing from the dealership at 2pm, a two-hour motorcycle ride will make its way to the site of a benefit concert that kicks off at 8pm in Devore, California, at the Hyundai Glen Helen Pavilion on Glen Helen Parkway.

The Vengeance Performance Products truck and trailer will be sweeping the group of Vengeance owners and other ride participants.

After arriving at the concert location, ride participants will receive special benefits including secured parking for their motorcycles, an after-ride BBQ, lawn seating at the concert and additional time to hang out with McGraw and Allen.

It’s television mania for motorcycles. Every night it’s bike week. Last night Arlen Ness, the godfather of custom motorcycles, Eddie Trotta from Ft. Lauderdale and Russ Mitchel from Exile in Sun Valley, California. I lived in Sun Valley once. It’s a grizzly, hot, smog strewn suburb of Los Angeles. No wonder there’s no color to his bikes.

I’ve got to hand it to these builders. They’re talented, hard-working guys and it’s about time the general public got a taste of their abilities. Ten years ago, bikers weren’t allowed on television unless indicted.

CALIFORNIA SUPERBIKE SCHOOLDOES BRAZIL!–Keith Code’s California Superbike School ran in Brazil the week of June14. Code hopes to open up the twelfth country for his schools.

Running at the Nelson Piquet circuit just weeks before the Moto GP tobe held there in Rio De Janiero, the school hopes to get a feel for theBrazilian riders and their needs.

Code says.”We’ve always gone into countries that have read the “A Twistof the Wrist” books but we don’t have it in Portugese yet. It is oneof the 7 translations we are currently working on. In the meantime,we are checking out Brazil to have a look at the situation there and seeif we can add a new continent to our schedule.”

SCREAMIN? EAGLE TEAM MAKES HISTORY AT ENGLISHTOWN–Hines Rides V-Rod to New Pro Stock Bike ET Record in March through Finals.

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 20, 2004) – The Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines drag racing team set a new national Pro Stock Bike ET record as rider Andrew Hines roared through eliminations to win the class at the 35th Annual K&N Filters Supernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway. The win was the third of the season and second in a row for Hines, who now has a 185-point lead in the Pro Stock Bike class after six events in the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

After a day of leading the class aboard his Screamin? Eagle V-Rod, Hines had posted the three quickest times in the Pro Stock Bike record book, saving his best run for the final round, a 7.016-second blast at 192.28 mph. Hines defeated Craig Treble (7.138/186.59) to take the win.

?To run a bunch of 7.0?s all day, let alone set a national record, is just awesome,? Hines said. “That last run was perfect.?During qualifying, Hines led the way with a 7.078/189.60 pass, while his Screamin? Eagle teammate, GT Tonglet, slotted into second at 7.161/188.15.

In the first round of eliminations Tonglet (7.113/189.31) easily handled Kurt Matte (7.445/148.62). Hines faced Karen Stoffer (7.219/184.67) in his first-round race and laid down his first record, a 7.020/192.08 that eclipsed the 7.049 ET mark established by Angelle Savoie at Englishtown on May 15, 2002.

Hines (7.070/191.76) marched through the second round, defeating Fred Collis (7.120/184.72). Tonglet (7.131/187.60) had a great run but lost with a red-light start that gave the win to Shawn Gann (7.193/186.05).

In round three, Hines (7.028/191.92) posted the second-quickest Pro Stock Bike run on record and defeated Steve Johnson (7.179/184.27) for the second week in a row to advance to the final round for the fourth time this season and the fifth time in his career.

Hines faced Craig Treble in the final before a grandstand packed with enthusiastic Harley-Davidson fans. Treble got off the line first with a 0.013 reaction time to 0.028 for Hines, but the Screamin? Eagle V-Rod made up that difference in 150 feet and roared off to the win and a new national ET record. At the end of the weekend, Hines was top qualifier, set quickest ET and fastest top speed (192.28 mph) for the event, had the best reaction time (0.004 seconds), won the final round and set a new national record.

?This was quite a record-setting weekend for the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team, but our success so far this season is really the result of three years of development and hard work by Byron Hines and the crew,? said Screamin? Eagle Racing Manager Anne Paluso. ?They never gave up when we weren?t running up front.?

?It?s hard to believe how far we?ve come since the 2002 GatorNationals, when we didn?t even qualify,? said team owner Byron Hines. ?It?s taken a tremendous amount of work and I take great pride in what this team has accomplished.?

After six rounds of NHRA Pro Stock Bike competition, Hines leads the class with 604 points, 185 points ahead of Gann, in second with 419 points. Tonglet is third with 393 points.

NEW BDL BELT DRIVE TECH COMING–We had some visitors last week, Helen Wolf and Mailman. At the same time I was installing the new EVO-3000 BDL Belt Drive system with outbound bearing support.

Mailman is an avid drag racing Sportster competitor. He worked with me on the installation. It should hit the site today, if I’m lucky.

THE BIKERNET NAVY–The Navy found they had too many personnel and decided to offer an early retirement bonus. They promised any officer who volunteered for retirement a bonusof $1,000 for every inch measured in a straight line between any two points on his body. The officer would get to choose what those two points would be.

The first officer who accepted asked that he be measured from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. He measured six feet and walked out with $72,000.

The second officer was a little smarter and asked to be measured from the tip of his outstretched hand to his toes. He walked away with $96,000.

Next came a grizzled old chief who, when asked how he would like to be measured replied, “from the tip of my penis to my testicles.” It was suggested by the pension board that he might want to reconsider, explaining about the nice big checks the previous two officers had received. But the old chief insisted and they decided to go along with him, provided that the measurement was taken by a medical officer.

The medical officer arrived and said “drop ’em” which the chief did. The medic put a tape to the end of the chief’s penis and began to work back.

“‘My God’ he exclaimed “where are your testicles’!

BEMISDERFER TAKES F-USA THUNDERBIKE POINTS LEAD AT LOUDON–Estok and Bilansky Falter as Bemisderfer Rides Buell to Second-Place Finish.

LOUDON, N.H. (June 20, 2004) – Harding Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Bemisderfer took over the season points lead in the Formula USA National Thunderbike championship, placing second aboard a Buell Firebolt while his main rivals failed to score points at the 81st running of the annual Loudon Classic at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Racing on his home track, Jeff Wood rode a Ducati 900SS to victory in the 12-lap Thunderbike event. Wood was also top qualifier. Rick Doucette placed third on a Suzuki, followed by Jerry Wood on a Ducati and Hoban Brothers Racing-Appleton Buell rider Jeff Johnson on a Buell Firebolt.

Harding Harley-Davidson rider and defending Thunderbike national champion Dave Estok had a forgettable weekend, qualifying in 9th position and then retiring with a mechanical problem to score a DNF for the race, his second consecutive race weekend without points.

Hal?s Buell rider Dan Bilansky also had a tough weekend at Loudon, placing 18th on a Buell Firebolt after a crash during qualifying left him starting in 20th position.

Bemisderfer?s steady ride left him with 60 points and a commanding 19-point lead after four of eight events in the Thunderbike National series. Estok, who led the series by a single point coming into Loudon, is now in second place with 41 points. Bilansky and Kosco Buell rider Joe Rozynski, who was 14th at Loudon, are tied for third position with 36 points. The next stop on the Formula USA National Thunderbike Series is June 25-27 at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Va.

The Formula USA National Thunderbike series is a horsepower-to-weight ratio restricted class, open to a variety of production-based motorcycles. Buell-mounted riders competing in the eight-event 2004 Thunderbike series are racing for a share of the $70,500 contingency fund posted by Buell Motorcycle Company and Buell Riders Adventure Group (BRAG).

FULL-BORE DESIGNS– is the name of a new frame-making facility based in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.It is the latest project of Weld Racing’s former Plant Manager and Vice President Russ Bailey.

Russ identified a need for innovative, quality products in the bike market and founded Full-Bore Designs with himself as CEO.He has a wealth of experience from many years of frame building, with projects ranging from Top Fuel racers to sand toys.

Russ tells us he is currently engaged on work for a number of top custom builders but the designs must remain secret for the time being.

At present, Full-Bore is quoting four weeks delivery on its orders.This is already better than many of its competitors but the company hopes to improve on that figure by Fall this year.Frames are offered in chopper, cruiser or pro-street styles in a variety of sizes and are supplied complete with matching swingarm and oil bag.

POLARIS BREAKS GROUND ON NEW R&D FACILITY–New Wyoming, Minn. location to serve as hub for company’s engineering, research.

MINNEAPOLIS, June 17, 2004 – Polaris CEO and president Tom Tiller broke ground today at the site of the company’s future research and development center near Wyoming, Minn. BIKER VETS VISIT BUSH– The roar of Rolling Thunder at the nearby Capital Mall could be heard across the South Lawn of the White House as eight motorcycles rolled up the driveway to the South Portico where President Bush was waiting to greet them.

Bush shook hands with Artie Muller, president of the Rolling Thunder veterans’ advocacy group, and kissed Muller’s passenger, singer Nancy Sinatra, a veterans’ supporter. Other bikers who rode up the driveway included White House budget director Josh Bolton, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson and Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi, and various Rolling Thunder leaders. Bush led them on a personal tour of the Oval Office, reported the Associated Press.

Later, Bush addressed, via a telephone hookup, a Rolling Thunder rally at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in the nation?s capital.

The president noted the letter of endorsement he recently received from the group. “Artie, I thought you were going to offer me riding lessons,” Bush joked.

“In the Oval Office, I looked you in the eye as you told me of your relentless pursuit of finding out the plight of many of our POW/MIAs, and I appreciated so much your concern, your care and your persistence,” Bush told the rally. “I also want to thank you and your organization, Artie, for honoring the men and women of our military who fight today in Afghanistan and Iraq.”

“Ride safe,” he told them.

Rolling Thunder is an organization that seeks to create awareness of POW/MIA issues and promotes increased veterans’ benefits. It has 70 chapters and over 7,000 members throughout the United States and abroad.

MASSACHUSETTS ENACTS “NELLY’S BILL” TO EDUCATE DRIVERS Governor Mitt Romney signed House Bill 2124 into law on June 6, 2004, to require at least one hour of a motorcycle safety and awareness module be included in the course curriculum for 398 licensed auto driver training schools statewide. Known as “Nelly’s Bill,” in memory of Nelson Selig who was killed in 2000 when a 19-year-old driver crossed into the path of his motorcycle, the law will take affect in 90 days.

“We’re very grateful our legislators who listened to those who ride,” said Paul W. Cote, Director of Government Relations for the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association. “This legislation, when implemented, will begin another element of our process at reducing accidents, injuries and fatalities here in Massachusetts,” said Cote. Funding for the expectant $10,000 cost of the materials will come from the state’s Motorcycle Safety Program, accumulated by $2 of each of the 144,000-plus motorcyclist’s annual registration fees. “Riders pay their own way,” Cote said, noting that during their lobbying day last month, they also sought a $5 increase of the $25 annual motorcycle registration fee for more money in their Safety Fund.

U.S. MOTORCYCLE SALES REV UP FOR 11TH STRAIGHT YEAR Sales of new motorcycles increased 6.4 percent in 2003, while combined sales of motorcycles and ATVs reached an all-time high. Motorcycle sales have now been on the rise for more than a decade, according to the latest Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) estimates for all brands, marking the 11th consecutive year that new unit sales of two-wheelers increased compared to the previous year. Approximately 996,000 new motorcycles were purchased in 2003, up from 936,000 in 2002.

All Terrain Vehicle sales climbed to an estimated 886,000 in 2003 and increased by 3.8 percent over the previous year, posting their 12th straight year of growth. Estimated combined motorcycle and ATV sales for 2003 reached 1,882,000, which is an all-time record and up 5.2 percent over the previous year.

UK BIKE SALES CONTINUE DROPPING The latest figures released by the British motorcycle industry group MCIA shows that new motorcycle sales fell by around 21% in May 2004.

So far, some 45,000 two wheelers have been sold this year, down 17% on the 2003 total.

Smaller bikes and scooters seem to be less popular than ever, down by a whopping 41% in May, which is astonishing, says the MCIA, given the recent hike in petrol prices in the UK — surely some bike dealers must be marketing scooters to cash-strapped English car drivers?

Best selling big bikes in Britain so far in 2004 are the new Yamaha R1, followed by the Honda CBR600RR, then the CBR125R.

On the brighter side, bike thefts in the U.K. have dropped by 7%.

VIRGINIA GOV VETOES SAFETY BILL Despite passing unanimously through the House and Senate, Governor Mark R. Warner has vetoed HB 408, a bill that would have required the marking of steel plates on Virginia roadways to make them more visible to drivers and riders.

140 Legislators saw the value and benefit of this key piece of safety legislation, yet Governor Warner rejected a bill that is designed to insure motorcyclists, and the general public, are safer on the roads by requiring that steel plates installed on roadways be clearly marked, reports Jim Cannon of the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM).

WEST COAST CHOPPERS GEAR BANNED FROM CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS The Iron Cross, a recognizable symbol of Nazi Germany, has become a popular design with skateboard companies such as No Fear and biker clothing manufacturers like Jesse James’ West Coast Choppers. But school officials in Southern California have banned the symbol and recently mailed over 13,000 letters to parents of children in the Simi Valley Unified School District to inform them of their decision to bar clothing and jewelry depicting the symbol they say is being used by believers of “white power” movements to identify themselves.

School officials said that the step was recommended by the Police Department, which considers the Iron Cross a gang symbol, and was taken due to rumors of rising tensions on campus which they fear could lead to violence.

U.S. ATTORNEY’S OFFICE APPEALS BAN ON BIKER ATTIRE IN COURT The U.S. Attorney’s office has appealed a judge’s ruling that bars biker attire in a Salt Lake City courtroom. In May, a magistrate judge ordered that motorcycle gear — especially that worn by the members of Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) — not be worn in court proceedings for a child sex abuse case currently in federal court.

Members of BACA often show up in courtrooms when child abuse suspects are on trial to show support for the victims, and U.S. Attorney Paul Warner says the order barring the motorcycle gear limits the First Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. Warner’s office is hoping that the order will be reviewed, and overruled.

Last year, a judge in Provo barred BACA clothing during a sex abuse case involving a child, saying the clothing and logos could influence the jury.

TATTOOING NOW LEGAL IN 49 STATES Many states outlawed tattooing in the 1960s, but South Carolina and Oklahoma are the only states to continue the ban, at least until now. A compromise bill lifting South Carolina’s ban on tattooing has passed the House and Senate and is on its way to Governor Mark Sanford’s desk. Sanford has said he will sign the bill as long as it protects public safety, according to the Associated Press.

The bill outlaws tattoos for anyone younger than 18 and requires a parent’s permission from 18 to 21. It bans tattooing the face, neck and head.

Tattoo artists will have to use disposable needles and follow local zoning laws, such as opening businesses away from churches and schools. Tattoo parlors also will need a license before opening.

A conference committee deleted a part of the House bill that would give local governments more control, which many supporters worried might kill the bill. But the House approved it 62-29 shortly before adjourning, and the Senate followed with a voice vote soon after.

STUDY SHOWS THAT HELMETS SLOW REACTIONS Cricket helmets may slow the brain, according to a new study from the U.K. Keeping a cool head may have real advantages for batsmen at the crease, according to new research among cricketers that found a measurable improvement in reaction times and vigilance when players did not wear protective helmets. Researchers believe that the difference in performance may be linked to an overheating of the brain in players batting in helmets — possibly similar to the effects on people over-using mobile phones.

Dr. Nick Neave, of the human cognitive neuroscience unit at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, said his study showed that “in young adults, in a mild climate, some aspects of cognition are affected by wearing a non-vented protective helmet following exercise.”

Dr. Neave told the annual conference of the British Psychological Society in London that his team tested 16 cricketers, aged 13 to 17, who were members of Durham County Cricket Club. The boys — half wearing standard helmets — batted in the nets with a bowling machine and underwent a computer test for mental abilities, including vigilance, reaction times andattentiveness. The study showed that getting hot alone had no effect on the physical abilities of the young cricketers or on their mental abilities to perform very simple mental tasks. But when they were asked to perform more complex tasks, involving making choices, their reaction times fell. One measurement showed a 16 millisecond deficit in helmet-wearing boys.

Dr. Neave and his colleagues now want to test their results with adult cricketers to see if experience overrides the slight detrimental effect of wearing a helmet.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL REALITY SHOW Bravo has announced that actors and friends Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman will star in and co-produce “Long Way Round,” a new reality series chronicling the duo’s four-month long transcontinental motorcycling journey.

The two left from London in late April after taking survival training, first aid, nutrition, bike maintenance and linguistics classes, and plan to arrive at their final destination of New York City by the end of July. Their trip takes them over 20,000 miles, circumnavigating the longest continuous landmass on earth, through the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, Siberia, Alaska and Canada before arriving in the United States. They will live off the land and out of a tent, encountering hardships along the way, including cultural and language barriers.

“We live in such a comfortable and easy time that it doesn’t do yourself any harm to go and test yourselves and survive with just the bare essentials,” said McGregor, who is best known for his movie roles in Moulin Rouge, Trainspotting, the Star Wars trilogy and more recently starred in the Golden Globe nominated film Big Fish. Boorman, the son of famed Hollywood director John Boorman (Hope and Glory, Deliverance), is also a movie veteran with a multitude of supporting screen credits including Deliverance, Excalibur, The Serpent’s Kiss, The Emerald Forrest and many more. In fact, the two adventurers first met eight years ago on the set of The Serpent’s Kiss, where they discovered their mutual passion for motorcycling.

The six-episode series will air later this year.

WEIRD NEWS: NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES A Romanian man says he’s “had enough” after being run over for the seventh time since 1987; four times by a car, once by a motorcycle, once by a bus and once by a train. Nicolae Tabacu, 44, from Valea Mare, Arges county, Australia, has now broken every limb except for his right hand.

He was run over by a police car in his most recent accident, which put him in the hospital with a broken leg. “I was only 10 meters from my house when I had this last accident,” the unlucky pedestrian told the Jurnalul National newspaper. “I think I’ve had enough. I wish this policeman hit me harder as I am really fed up with spending time in hospitals.”

I was blessed to have been able to spend a lil bit of time with him over the past 5 years….he would always let me come work whatever event locally that he’d be doing. He was like an Oyster man….rough on the outside but soft & sweet inside…..always concerned for a friend, always willing to help when he could, and He really loved the pretty women.

I will think of him and see him often as I don’t intend on letting his spirit leave my side . I will miss talking with him on the phone. I am glad he was able to find his way back to his faith ( he told me he was actively back at his synagogue), and happy to be there.

BIKERS GET DAYTONA?S ATTENTION–For some years now the Bikers have been telling Daytona Beach that they are unhappy with the way that they have been treated when they show up for Bike Week in March and also Biketoberfest in October. Many other cities in Florida have been welcoming the Bikers and this has seriously impacted Daytona Beach attendance.

The half-million motorcyclists who usually make it to Daytona Beach during these events are still coming to Florida but many are evading the hassles and high prices of the area, Orlando, Miami and even Key West reported a record number of motorcycle visitors during March 2004 while the numbers were down in Daytona Beach.

This has not gone unnoticed by the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau who have started a campaign to bring the Bikers Back To Daytona Beach.

Prior to Biketoberfest you will see a push from business leaders who want the Bikers Back. Why Not? The Bike Events bring $744 Million to the Daytona Beach area. The next highest moneymaker is the Daytona 500 and Pepsi 400, which brings in $561 Million

Kevin Killian a vice president of the Chamber of Commerce has said ?Our message is, We appreciate your business and we are glad you?re here.?

Part of the campaign will encourage bartenders to wear buttons welcoming bikers. It will also include ads of a man wearing a business suit, exposing his tattooed arm with the text ?There?s a little biker in all of us.? Though that is a good start it has not solved the real problems why the Bikers are going else where and that is the high prices and the over zealous law enforcement through out the area.

The Chamber needs to address that situation very aggressively and if Biketoberfest changes the Bikers will spread the word and some may go back to Daytona Beach.

?There isn?t a city in the nation that wouldn?t give their right arm for a event like this?, said Bonnie Miller a biker that serves on the committee trying to bring the Bikers Back.

She is right and other Florida locations are actively trying to bring the bikers to their area and having a lot of success in doing it.

HARLEY DAVIDSON MUSEUM PROJECT TERMS APPROVED–The City of Milwaukee Common Council on May 25 took a major step in support of plans to locate the Harley-Davidson Museum in the Menomonee Valley. In an 11-4 vote, the Council approved the general terms for redeveloping 20 acres at the 6th and Canal Street location for the museum and additional development.

In January, Harley-Davidson announced a proposal to build a 230,000 square foot development on the property in three phases, to include the museum, a cafe, retail and banquet space and other future development, representing a planned investment of $95 million.

“This is a big step toward making the Harley-Davidson museum a reality, and it’s a big step in the redevelopment of the Menomonee Valley,” said Lara Lee, Harley-Davidson Vice President. “We’re eager to get going with the museum development. Hundreds of thousands of Harley-Davidson customers are looking forward to visiting Milwaukee and the world-class destination that’s in store.”

With the Council’s vote, Harley-Davidson and the city can now begin work on the detailed contracts required to move the project forward. A final redevelopment plan and related aspects of the project are subject to future Council approval.

“Harley-Davidson thanks all the people and organizations who supported the proposal,” said Lee.

Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Supports Rolling Thunder–H.O.G. members from across the nation participated in the 17th annual Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom over Memorial Day weekend.

The Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom is a ride in Washington D.C. aimed at raising money and awareness for the POW-MIA issue. H.O.G. encouraged its members to attend by providing 3 pin stops on Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. At designated locations, participating H.O.G. members were able to order decorative pins commemorating the event. Over 7,100 H.O.G. members stopped to order their commemorative pins.

Two local Harley-Davidson dealerships, Harley-Davidson of Washington and Patriot Harley-Davidson, held events including H.O.G. pin stops on Saturday, May 29th. Sunday’s H.O.G. pin stop was located at the start of the parade route in the Pentagon’s North Parking Lot.

Several Harley-Davidson executives participated in the parade including President and COO, Jim McCaslin, Vice President and General Manager of York Vehicle Operations, Jorge Hidalgo and Director of Government Affairs, Wayne Curtin. These and other Harley-Davidson riders joined the over 300,000 attendees in support of the POW-MIA issue.

Milwaukee Black and Blue Ball Raises Money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association–The 11th annual Black and Blue Ball was held May 7th at the Midwest Express Center in Milwaukee, Wis. Over 1,000 attendees helped raise more than $422,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The Black and Blue Ball, sponsored by Harley-Davidson, is a themed event where attendees are encouraged to show up in their denim and Harley-Davidson apparel for a night of fun in the name of a great cause. Many guests rode their Harley-Davidson’s to the event where they enjoyed silent and live auctions, a raffle, boot shine stations, temporary tattoo parlors, dinner and entertainment. All proceeds went to MDA.

Since 1980 Harley-Davidson has partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association to raise money and promote awareness and raise research dollars for people with neuromuscular diseases. As a devoted partner, the family of Harley-Davidson dealers, customers and employees spent the past 24 years supporting the MDA through fundraising efforts. Through these efforts, Harley-Davidson has raised more than $47 million since the start of the partnership.

The Black and Blue Ball started in Milwaukee in 1993 and has since spread to other cities in the United States. May 7th was also the date of the Grand Rapids, Mich. Black and Blue Ball. Over 550 guests helped raise $150,000 at this event.

BRAG Successfully Brings It Home–Buell riders descended upon Southeastern Wisconsin June 2nd through the 5th as the Buell Riders Adventure Group (BRAG) hosted Bringing It Home, an event designed to celebrate the thrills and excitement common to Buell riders.

Riders from around the world began arriving in Delavan, Wis., on Wednesday where the event kicked off with a BattleTrax competition. During the competition, riders were able to test their braking and maneuvering skills on a specially designed parking lot course.

Bringing It Home attendees continued the adventure by participating in group rides along some the area’s most challenging roads. One such ride ended with a dinner at Buell Motorcycle Company, hosted by Erik Buell and his employees. The East Troy Chamber of Commerce was also on hand to welcome the group and serve dessert. Other event hosts included Hal’s Buell, Sauk Prairie Buell and Uke’s Buell each of which took turns hosting parties for the event participants.

The final day of Bringing It Home ended with a self-guided ride to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., for the AMA Races, where Buell Formula Xtreme Racers Mike Ciccotto and Michael Barnes signed autographs for event participants between races.

BIKERNET COMPLAINT DEPT.– An elderly lady phoned her telephone company to report that hertelephone failed to ring when her friends called – and that on the fewoccasions when it did ring, her pet dog always moaned right before thephone rang. The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious tosee this psychic dog or senile elderly lady.

He climbed a nearby telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialedthe subscriber’s house. The phone didn’t ring right away, but then thedog moaned loudly and the telephone began to ring.

Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1. The dog was tied to the telephone system’s ground wire via a steelchain and collar.
2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.
3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the phonenumber was called.
4. After a couple of such jolts, the dog would start moaning and thenurinate on himself and the ground.
5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone toring.

Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing andmoaning.

BIKERNET CARIBBEAN REPORT–Hi guys, yeap, I’m back, kind of sort of. I have been absent the past couple weeks because of work and trips. As you might or might not know we went to New York to visit Indian Larry and show support in his first annual bash. It was a really good time for all of us. As always it was full of friends, who I will not mention since some people might think I’m just dropping names once more. And, as always, without a trace of a doubt, New York City is the best place in the world. There are so many things to do and so many places to go. It never ceases to amaze me, although it was a very short trip it was packed.

After an all day party we headed over to Hogs and Heifers, were Michelle (the owner) hooked us up big time. Everyone was there, even all beat up. There were like 20 different bachelorette parties going on, but we got a corner closed off and hung out ’till the wee hours. Let?s say half of the Discovery channel competitors were there, plus another dozen or two of friends.

Another place that I must mention ids the Red Rock Tavern, we were also treated very well there, it was funny to be at a bar in New York City, watching the Discovery channel build off series.

Speaking of Discovery, make sure you check out their week of motorcycles stuff, starting with Motorcycle mania 3 Sunday night, then from Monday to Thursday with the new Build Off’s.

Also remember that the Horse Smoke Out is taking place next week in Salisbury North Carolina, a lot of my friends will be there and it’s always a good time, but this year, I wont be there….

You might wonder what is making me not write or not go to places? Well, good intentions and trips don’t pay the rent. Besides as some of you might know, I’m building a Bobber for the Journey Museum in Rapid City (during Sturgis) and the exhibition is a tribute to Dave Mann. Running around like a headless chicken is not easy, and I’m not going to bore anyone with details, but right now Caribbean Custom Cycles is a one-man band. Deadlines don’t wait for no one, this ain’t no TV show, it’s reality.

I’m trying to have everything done on the Bobber before heading out for Hawaii, and what I believe is a much deserved rest….fuck bikes.. I’m going surfing.

Even last night I had a chance to take off early to enjoy a soccer game, just to head back and weld some more. It’s a shame that I live in paradise and it’s Summer, everyone is fucking tanned and I look like Casper the friendly ghost. But then again, if and when I get my Discovery chance, I hope things will change.

Well, kind of my overdoing the Bobber is that I don’t have the luxury to keep on working ’till the last day before heading over to South Dakota; we need at least two weeks before, to head out. Put it this way, the trailer and truck leave the 22nd of July…. That?s it…and that’s when it needs to be done.

I have received a lot of news recently. We wish Jesse James a prompt recoup after hitting the wall with his race car, and breaking way too much shit…..American Dream Machines from Atlanta is having their annual party June 27th, if you are from that area show up and have a good time, send my regards, the whole family is very cool….Hank Young will also have a party in Atlanta at ESPN zone, they will watch his build off against Chica, yeap, another party I’m fucking missing…At least I’m going to Hawaii…

Amongst all the chaos and mayhem we are putting a chop together for our friend and Tattoo artist, Demian. It?s the no budget chop, yeap you heard right, not even low budget, just none. Let?s see what it can be done with what we have at hand, it certainly will be interesting.

Another week goes by and I have not been my usual self, no one hates me, no e-mails from rodents, no arguments, no one bitchin’… Man I’m going to have to get my ass in gear. I’m boring…

By the way, I’m so excited that the new 2000 whatever company models are getting unveiled that I need some prosaic to calm my nerves. Can?t wait to see what I will never buy.

And last but not least….I want to congratulate all the fathers, deadbeat or not, on their well deserved day. I have always wondered why they don’t celebrate a sons day, we are the ones that have to tolerate all the grumpiness and weird shit that comes with age. My best wishes to my own dad Guti… and to those who treat me like a son. I’m not a dad, but if you want to send some gifts (you never know) you know how to reach me. STURGIS BAN ON NUDITY–Meade County Ordinance- Purpose of Ordinance to prohibit and ban public nudity. (This ordinance is listed in the newspaper in Sturgis Wed June16th)

Basically it outlaws pasties and even thongs. Illegal to show anything from the center of the nipple down. It will go to court on July 6th presumably to screw up Sturgis Rally and Races 2004. The area affected will be county wide.

I?m done, I quit. My office is heating up like a oven with the sun going down, blasting through my windows. I need to move away from this computer and enjoy the rest of my afternoon outdoors in the cool shade. Stay tuned cause we have lots of new things to post over the next couple days, and next week. This weekend however will be dedicated to shuffling furniture and settling in this old building a little deeper. I called it a dump earlier cause it is, but it?s my dump, my home and I love it.
