Wild Adventure Bikernet Weekly News for February 13th 2020

I now have a new morning workout. I shovel and sweep snow for an hour to clear the historic sidewalk in front of our house on Jackson Street. I discovered yesterday that Jason, who owned Deadwood Custom Cycles lives on Taylor, less than a block away. I met with a contractor yesterday, Paul. He said this region is all cowboys and bikers. Sounds good to me. We need to watch out. READ THE BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS – CLICK HERE Do you want more fun, action, tech, reviews and reports? Harley-Davidson Outguns Modern Life in Poetic First Ads by Droga5

by David Gianatasio from https://musebycl.io/

Hit the open road and ‘Breathe’

Can Harley-Davidson help you outrun the internet and escape the digital hassles of modern life for a while, even if just metaphorically? The bikers in “Breathe,” a moody, cinematic :60 from Droga5, aim to answer that question.

Zipping through a hazy urban landscape, they appear to race against the accompanying narration, delivered by a robotic voice spewing lines like, “Keep scrolling. Be generous with likes … Keep scrolling. Stay in bed. Order food. Keep scrolling… ”

This prattle reaches a panicky pitch as the riders escape the city: “Don’t go outside! Don’t leave the phone behind! Do not engage your heart, your mind … Don’t ever let yourself feel this alive!”

Once they hit the open road, surrounded by nature, with the mist burning off, the voice concludes, simply: “Breathe … ride.”

Filmed in and around Prague, “Breathe” draws inspiration from Claude Lelouch’s 1976 experimental short “C’etait un rendez-vous,” about an anonymous driver’s high-speed jaunt through Paris in the wee hours.

“There is something exhilarating about feeling yourself go that fast in a closely built European city,” Droga5 creative director Thom Glover tells Muse. “When the buildings have character, the stakes feel higher.”

Indeed, it’s a more regal, picturesque dystopia than steel-and-glass skyscrapers would convey.

Filming presented challenges, as the team strove to “recreate the feeling of what it’s actually like riding a Harley-Davidson,” Glover says. “When you want to create that effect for a car, you build a hood-mount for the camera. But part of the thrill of the bike is how it bends on the corners, and shudders, and how close you feel to the road.”

Director of photography Matthias Koenigweiser and his team “built a number of original rigs to give the impression of single ride, some of which were mounted to the bike itself, some of which were attached to a camera vehicle, with the camera operator hanging upside down, inches behind the precision rider’s back wheel at 80 mph,” Glover says.

Directed by Smuggler’s Jaron Albertin, the spot effectively delivers a compelling—if somewhat predictable—message. That’s not really a knock, by the way. Motorcycle ads almost always depict a revitalizing journey of some sort—it’s almost a given. This spot succeeds way better than most in that regard by showing a special trip well worth taking.

The same goes for its companion piece, “Magic Hour.” Helmed by Epoch Films’ Elena Petitti di Roreto, shooting took place in Los Angeles and at rugged Tejon Ranch, two hours outside the city.

In this :60, a male narrator adopts a quasi-mystical tone, stressing themes of freedom and spirits roaming free: “It’s just you and the road, and the wind and the trees, and it fills you up.”

“You’re flying, but centered—lost, but found,” the V.O. continues. “Every part of your body’s engaged. Every part of your mind is activated. Synapses firing. Dopamine oozing. It’s chemical … You feel reborn.”

“Magic Hour” lacks the tension/release dynamic of “Breathe,” but the accelerating stream of quasi-Beat brand-poetry provides fitting accompaniment to the scenic grandeur of Southern California’s highways and byways.

“Riding puts the whole world in your rearview and lets you think,” says Droga5 copywriter Dan Litzow. “So, it made sense for us to make a film that simulates that in a way. Something easy to follow, but raw and stimulating at the same time.”

In a broader sense, these commercials represent an effort by the iconic 116-year-old company to rev its image and kick-start sales following recent declines. They also mark Droga5’s first major excursion for the brand since adding the business a year ago. Both ads take somewhat unexpected routes, and should engage eyeballs as the Harleys roll.

“The audience is anyone who wants more balance in their life, but doesn’t necessarily feel totally comfortable with the ‘green juice and yoga’ definition of wellness,” Glover says. “Their takeaway should be that riding a Harley-Davidson is the perfect way to leave it all behind.”

Legislative Updates from Biker Lives Matter

ARIZONA

H2285: MOTORCYCLE OPERATION; PASSING VEHICLES [Support]

The operator of a two-wheeled motorcycle is permitted to overtake and pass another vehicle that is stopped in the same direction of travel in the same lane and to operate the motorcycle between the lanes of traffic on a street that is divided into at least two adjacent traffic lanes in the same direction of travel with a speed limit that does not exceed 45 miles per hour, if the motorcycle is traveling at a speed that does not exceed 15 miles per hour.

Single List Comments:
However, the California standard for emissions, aka the CARB standard, violates the black letter that has forced hundreds of businesses in the motorcycle industry to relocate to our beautiful state. While this has had a negative impact on the California economy, it is a windfall for Arizona.

The ability of a consumer to purchase and install federally approved exhaust systems that increases fuel efficiency would be outlawed under CARB standards. This would impact the motorcycle industry into the hundreds of thousands of dollars upwards into the millions each year.

ABATE of Arizona has stood before the Arizona legislature on many occasions and successfully argued with facts and statistics in reference to the emissions output of a motorcycle on our roads. This is why emissions testing requirements were repealed not only in Pima county but in Maricopa county as well.

Any proposed legislation, although well intentioned, will cost Arizona financially in the way of lost businesses, wage earnings and a lifestyle of freedom. And it is this reason we are opposed to any CARB legislation proposed.
On behalf of the 327,000 motorcyclists and thousands of motorcycle related businesses in our state, we oppose this legislation

Three Months After Launch, Work Truck Marketplace Comvoy Sees Success

Senior team members and advisors play crucial roles in establishing a marketplace that serves both dealer and buyer needs

CHICO, Calif., Feb. 12, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Comvoy, the first and only structured, searchable marketplace for work-ready trucks and vans, launched in November 2019 to match customers with the right work truck for the right job––across any vocation, body type, vehicle or upfit manufacturer. Senior team members Nikki Wilson, Kevin Kinell, and Gerry Ogris, in addition to key advisor Bernie Brenner, have helped shape the marketplace and ushered in its early successes within the dealer community.

“Comvoy is perfection,” said Mark Santilli at Jeff Gordon Chevrolet, a dealership based in Wilmington, North Carolina. “I’ve been waiting for someone in the commercial vehicle industry to understand the need for a marketplace that connects buyers with dealerships. By showing businesses the available inventory in their area, it not only helps them hone in on the work trucks and vans they need for their jobs, but also helps dealerships make more sales. I’m glad Comvoy finally exists, and I can’t wait to see the impact this has on our business in the months and years to come.”

Comvoy has cultivated strong engagement with dealers nationwide, demonstrating, early on, the long-term impact this commercial vehicle marketplace is poised to have on the entire industry. This success would not have been made possible without Comvoy’s strong team.

  • Kevin Kinell: Comvoy’s VP of Product & Engineering, Kinell has a proven track record of guiding tech start-ups, building impressive products, and developing great teams. From co-founding ChicoStart.com, a startup incubator that helps early-stage companies, to his work as a founding developer at Auctiva, the first eBay auction management company, Kinell’s variety of experience in the tech and marketplace space helped him cultivate the right design and strong engineering team behind Comvoy.
  • Nikki Wilson: Comvoy’s Director of Marketing and Communications, Wilson spent the last nine years directing commercial vehicle marketing initiatives for Ford Motor Company focused on targeting small to medium-sized businesses––the same audience that Comvoy serves. With her deep understanding of the work truck sector, Wilson ensures that the Comvoy marketplace allows dealers to most effectively engage with their buyers.
  • Gerry Ogris: Comvoy’s New Business Development Lead, Ogris has successfully serviced dealerships for over 25 years. At Dealertrack he held several VP positions leading multiple software sales and operations teams contributing to its ascent to a billion-dollar company culminating in an acquisition by Cox Automotive. In his tenure at Reynolds + Reynolds, he led sales teams across all software product lines to significantly increase auto dealership market penetration. Ogris has utilized his relationships and industry know-how to advise the Comvoy team and contribute to the marketplace’s early success.
  • Bernie Brenner: Co-founder of TrueCar, Brenner joined on as an early advisor to Comvoy, focused on the mission to transform the commercial vehicle industry. Leveraging his vast industry experience, Brenner has been a key strategist and mentor to shape the creation of the Comvoy marketplace.

Alongside Comvoy CEO/founder Kathryn Schifferle, the Comvoy team is uniquely positioned to serve both automotive dealers and vocational buyers, due to their vast industry experience. They bring unmatched knowledge on how to succeed in the automotive and commercial vehicle industries; this is what is catapulting Comvoy on the road to success.

“With over 40 combined years spent helping dealers engage with work truck buyers, Nikki, Kevin, Gerry, and Bernie have been indispensable in creating this marketplace,” said Schifferle. “With their efforts, we have built Comvoy to empower businesses to find the vehicles they need; I am confident that they will continue to drive us through continued growth and success for our dealers.”

SAFETY ALERT! AVON COBRA RECALL!

Recall: Some Avon Cobra Chrome Tires May Unexpectedly Fail

If you have these, they’re dangerous and need replacement.

Tires are definitely near the top of the list of things on your bike that you don’t want to spontaneously fail. Avon Tires is issuing a voluntary recall on certain Cobra Chrome motorcycle tires because there’s an increased potential for complete tire failure, which could rapidly cause riders using affected tires to lose control and/or crash.

Avon’s parent company, Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe Limited, is recalling a very specific range of Avon Cobra Chrome tires in size 240/50R16, with DOT Tire Identification Code AT 6D 28 1418—2119. All affected tires were manufactured between the dates of April 8, 2018, and June 1, 2019.

To determine if your Avon Cobra Chrome tires are affected, you’ll need to examine the sidewalls of your tires to find the DOT Tire Identification Code. If your tires read “AT 6D 28” and then any four-digit code in the numeric range between 1418 and 2119, your tires are affected, per Avon.

These tires may wear unsatisfactorily and give you a less than stellar ride, and your steering and feel for motorcycle control may be affected. However, the most serious part of the defect that Avon lists is this: “If undetected, affected tires may develop an in-service inner-liner degradation, ultimately resulting in an increased potential of tire failure that could lead to the rapid loss of inflation pressure, motorcycle control, and increase the risk of a crash.”

Avon requests that you use the information above to check your tires. If you believe any tires you have are affected, you should contact the dealer from which you purchased the tires. You can also contact Cooper Tire directly for matters pertaining to this recall. Either way, you should arrange for inspection and replacement, free of charge, under the terms of this recall.

Above all, if you believe your tires are affected, you should avoid riding at high speeds on these tires until they have been inspected and replaced. Also, if you had one or more tires that were affected but have already replaced them out of your own pocket, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Contact Cooper for more details.

17 with ties to motorcycle club indicted on drug charges

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Federal prosecutors have indicted 17 people with ties to a motorcycle club on charges alleging that they operated a drug ring in Indiana and Kentucky.

The indictments announced Thursday by U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler allege that some of defendants are members of the Grim Reapers Motorcycle Club or associates of that Evansville group.

Prosecutors said they believe Evansville residents Gary Wayne Forston, 39, and Jason Wilson, 42, were the ringleaders of a drug operation that allegedly distributed methamphetamine in Evansville and nearby communities.

Forston is the Grim Reapers’ president and was previously indicted on weapons charges after a November raid on the club.

Minkler said officials had seized 23 guns, $35,000 in cash and 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) of meth that has an estimated street value of more than $250,000.

Most of the defendants were allegedly mid-level distributors who are accused of selling drugs to lower-level drug dealers or directly to users, the Evansville Courier & Press reported.

The indictments are the culmination of a six-month, multi-agency investigation which included federal, state and local law enforcement.

Minkler said his office will consider pursuing forfeiture of the Grim Reapers’ headquarters.

“What we don’t want is the Grim Reapers to come back and relocate in that clubhouse and start doing business again,” he said.

Weapons and drugs seized in raids targeting outlaw motorcycle gangs

by Rachel Riga from https://www.abc.net.au/

Queensland police say they have targeted several outlaw motorcycle gangs linked to “substantial trafficking of drugs” and organised crime during a series of raids across the Gold Coast.

Officers executed 15 search warrants at properties from Coolangatta to Yatala for offences involving drugs, weapons, fraud and money laundering.

The operation involved more than 110 police from the State Crime Command-Organised Crime Gangs Group, the Gold Coast District, Australian Federal Police and other external agencies as part of Operation Romeo Ionic.

Detective Superintendent Roger Lowe said eight people had been charged with 22 offences.

“Our investigations are centred on this criminal syndicate which operates across South East Queensland into northern New South Wales and their alleged involvement in trafficking dangerous drugs, rebirthing of vehicles, substantial fraud and other serious crimes,” he said.

Weapons, including a handgun and a rifle, various quantities of drugs, and phones were seized during the searches.

“They’re really governed by greed and their involvement in normally illicit drugs and weapons, unlawful trafficking, so it’s not uncommon to see these gangs cross over and do business with each other and particularly even on an international scope.”

A 33-year-old Southport man, alleged to be a member of the Lone Wolf motorcycle gang, is among those in custody.

He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday on weapons and drug trafficking charges, and a 28-year-old man from Redland Bay, allegedly a member of the Mongols, is due to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court.

The police operation was launched last year and investigations are still underway.

European motorcycle police begin mission trip to South America

.- A group of European motorcycle police is currently taking part in a mission trip to South America, offering support to Catholic missionaries in poor communities.

Moto for Peace is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 by Italian police officers to travel the world on motorcycles to carry out humanitarian, social and evangelistic work. The group promotes values of solidarity, friendship and cultural exchange while contributing to educational, healthcare and sanitation projects.

The organization has expanded to include active police officers from Spain, Germany, and other European countries. Their previous efforts include donating motorcycles to doctors in rural Nepal, raising money for a water purifier in Ethiopia, providing medical aid in various parts of Africa, and completing construction on an orphanage in Bolivia.

The current team is comprised of 16 Italian, German and Spanish police. They departed for Chile Jan. 29 and plan to visit Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Peru over the course of two months.

The mission’s purpose is to support the commitment of Catholic missionaries in South America along an 8,700 mile route, visiting the communities where the missionaries work under conditions of poverty, lack of resources and social instability.

Since their arrival in Chile, the police officers have visited homes for the elderly and orphans in three cities. They also visited the offices of the Archdiocese of Santiago and met with Archbishop Celestino Aós. In a video posted on the archdiocesan website, Aós expressed his joy at “meeting people who stand up and work for peace.”

Celestino Suárez, the vice president of Moto for Peace, told ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish language news partner, that the current mission is being carried out with the collaboration of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. The agency learned about the group’s work in 2018 and encouraged it to visit South America again, their second trip since 2007.
