Deadwood Bikernet Weekly News for January 30, 2020

Hey,

I just drove through over 300 miles of snow and the whole state of Wyoming to get to Deadwood. It was truly amazing, except when I couldn’t see shit.

As of Friday, the Bikernet team will have a hideout in the Badlands. Hang on for more reports.

A brother just installed a 1909 Merkel in his living room. He sent me a shot and said he loves his wife, Joan. She’s cool, but that’s one of the first items on my agenda. I need to haul a bike up to Deadwood and place it securely in my living room, or somewhere in the house. Need something to ride around the kitchen.

Hang on for more colorful reports. In the meantime, let’s hit the news.

Facing financial crunch, UK based Norton Motorcycle goes into administration; India roll out hit

by Ketan Thakkar from https://economictimes.indiatimes.com

Norton had set up an equally owned joint venture with Pune-based Kinetic Motoroyale in 2017 to start making mid-size motorcycles for India and Southeast Asian Markets by 2018. The project got delayed due to financial crunch at the UK-based entity.

UK-based premium bike maker Norton Motorcycle’s India roll out may be hit, as the company has gone into administration after failing to pay outstanding dues to the UK authorities.

According to a news report, the company is struggling to pay a tax bill and faces a winding-up order under the UK’s insolvency law.

Norton had set up an equally owned joint venture with Pune-based Kinetic Motoroyale in 2017 to start making mid-size motorcycles for India and Southeast Asian Markets by 2018. The project got delayed due to financial crunch at the UK-based entity.

When contacted, Kinetic Motoroyale managing director Ajinkya Firodia told ET that Norton was looking to raise funds. Firodia said he would be travelling shortly to the UK to understand the situation better and seek clarity.

“Norton Motoroyale (the joint venture) is a separate company and continues to exist and hold its rights in its territories of India and Asean countries. After our visit, we shall understand the extent of impact, if any. The India-side development of all parts is nearly complete for the 650 Atlas. For some parts developed in the UK or Europe for Norton, I shall seek clarity from the administrator,” Firodia added.

When queried if the 650cc bike would get further delayed, he said it was “difficult to predict” now.

Kinetic Motoroyale had set up a 30,000-unit capacity plant in Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. A range of Norton bikes were expected to be made at this plant for Indian and Southeast Asian markets.

According to media reports, Norton, which was rescued by property developer Stuart Garner in 2008, said the company owed tax authorities 300,000 pounds and could be liquidated if it was not given more time to pay.

The report added that two of Garner’s other companies were also in administration.

Founded in Birmingham, Norton began making motorbikes in 1902 and soon became associated with races such as the Isle of Man TT.

Models like the Dominator and the Commando are well renowned and some of the bikes have even been featured in films including the Bond movies. The Norton Interpol was used by the UK Police in the 1980s for patrolling.

More than 100 photos from GNRS

from Rodder’s Journal

Over the weekend, the Pomona Fairplex was hot rod heaven. From the buildings to the midways, everywhere you looked were cars, cars and more cars. There were big dollar show rods and homebuilt creations, record-setting drag cars and one-off customs. Topless, pre-1937 machines without roll-up windows competed for the coveted America’s Most Beautiful Roadster title, while a host of traditional rods overran the Suede Palace. This year’s show didn’t hold back—and we were right there in the middle of it all.

Throughout the weekend, we walked more than 12 miles in our effort to capture the sights and sounds of the 71st Grand National Roadster Show. We heard flatheads gargle, big blocks rumble, and hot rodders young and old obsess over details. Chrome glistened, Metalflake glimmered and spectators from far and wide floated around the Fairplex in an automotive-induced euphoria. We caught up with old friends, met new ones and shot photos—a whole lot of photos. Hundreds of them, to be exact.

Since we don’t have to worry about cramming too many photos into a small space, we decided to run an expanded gallery of GNRS coverage on our website. There you’ll find images of our favorite rods, customs and competition machines that we came across during our Southern California trip.

Before you jump into the pictorial, we would like to say a quick word about our next issue. TRJ #83 will be heading your way shortly, and now is the perfect time to give you a glimpse at the covers. On one, we have Lucky Burton’s Model A that he built for Bonneville. It’s been chopped, channeled and streamlined in every way possible, yet it’s as traditional as they come with flathead power.

The other cover features a vintage photo of Steve Scott’s “The Uncertain-T.” We dig into its strange saga, share rare and unseen snapshots of the original, and showcase the tribute built by Martin Bennett of New Zealand (which was on display at this year’s GNRS).

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who followed along for our Instagram and Facebook coverage over the weekend. For those who missed it, you can check it out here and here.

That’s all for now. We’re already counting down the days until next year’s Roadster Show.

Reminds me of the day someone left a shop rag in the oil pan of my father’s dragster. It went unnoticed until we fired it and had no oil pressure. The rag got sucked up over the oil pickup and we had no pressure. Fortunately we shut if off in time, and I wasn’t the one who left the rag in there!

Looks like fun guys. Be fast, be safe!

THE TEXAS WEATHER REPORT–Fog again, but not as bad as last months, probably shouldn’t have been running 55 into Willis proper? Still couldn’t see great until farther down I-45 in the Woodlands. Major accident in Conroe, I saw vehicles start moving to the right and the emergency lights to the left.

As I’m moving right, I realize there’s a cop car right in front of me! The entire thing was blocked off, they’re yelling at me to slow down. Too much moisture on the shield again. At least it was ¼-mile visibility in the Woodlands past Conroe.

Did I ever mention I HATE being a glorified phone operator! I use to hear commercials for this place when I was at the St James and was thankful I worked with beautiful entertainers! How in the world did I end up here?

SADDLEMEN SEAT OF THE WEEK—1979-2003 XL Sportster Americano™ Café Classic Seat

Brand Fitment: Harley-Davidson
Model Fitment: XL SPORTSTER
Year Fitment: 1979-2003

Café motorcycle seats prove that function that creates a style. When a company like Saddlemen®, with its rich racing heritage and styling expertise, tackles a genre, the results are stunning. Such is the case with Saddlemen’s® new Americano Café seats for the Harley-Davidson Sportster family.

Unlike other café seat offerings that ask you to mutilate your fender or frame, Americano Café seats slide right on your Sportster using factory hardware and mounting points. Engineered on existing Saddlemen® seats, the fit of the Americano is as excellent as it is stylish.

A carefully sculpted shape, with an extra level of attention to the ubiquitous “hump,” Americano Café seats instantly turn a motorcycle into an object of desire. But, there is more to these seats than meets the eye, as the attention to the seating area, plus the use of Saddlemen’s® Gelcore Technology, yields a seat whose comfort matches its looks. Want to tour with a racing-inspired seat? You can do it with an Americano!

If you are a fan of motorcycle history, you probably know the legend of early UK riders dashing from café to café on their lightweight, yet powerful bikes. The Sportster came along adding American punch to that group of bikes and now there’s a seat that lets you easily pay tribute to those early daredevils.

Don’t accept anything less as you cannot buy a better seat. Classic race-bike looks, top quality components, simple installation, designed and engineered specifically for the Harley-Davidson Sportster model – all great reasons to choose Saddlemen®.

Infamous Florida Easter bunny arrested after hit-and-run
ORLANDO – A Florida man who became a video sensation after fighting a man on the street while dressed as the Easter Bunny was arrested and tried to use the costume to elude capture, authorities said. Antoine McDonald became an overnight phenomenon when a video captured him fighting a man on the streets of Orlando last year.

Earlier this month, McDonald was driving a motorcycle when he ran a stop sign and crashed into a carport before fleeing the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The carport collapsed on top of the vehicle.

Deputies went to McDonald’s address and spotted a gray car driving away and found McDonald laying in the backseat of the car.
When a deputy went to arrest him, he denied it.

“I wasn’t in any crash. I’m the Orlando Easter bunny, Google it,” he said, according to an arrest report.

The Orlando Sentinel reports authorities asked him to remove his costume before arresting him. He is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, driving with a suspended license and operating a motorcycle without a license.

SUGAR BEAR SPRINGER REPORT– Talked to Sugar Bear Thursday. He has the pieces cut out for my front end. They are at the polishing shop now. When he gets them back, he will weld them together, send them to the chrome shop, and once he gets them back, assemble, and ship the front end to me. Been a long wait, ordered it in September of 2018. I’m sure it will be worth it.

He is a nice man. Invited me to chopper flats for the Longfellows gathering at the rally in Sturgis this summer.

On another note, Sent some parts off the FL to a shop in Nashville to get the chrome removed and then brass plated. They sent me pictures before the shipped them back to me yesterday.

Looks like they did a nice job. They did the gas caps, horn cover, dash, air cleaner cover, luggage rack, and exhaust pipes. Oh, and the rain caps for the exhaust on my chopper. Things are happening.

All for now. Will keep you posted.

International Anti-Car Nonsense–
We recently updated and republished a popular post, Do Vision Zero Programs Equal More Traffic Accidents? on the NMA Blog. The article points to several examples of cities where pedestrian/bicyclist accident and fatalities rates have not improved, and in many instances have increased, after expensive Vision Zero programs have been implemented.

Such programs have the laudable but unrealistic goal of attaining zero traffic deaths by restricting, and in some cases eliminating, motorized traffic in city centers.

Our little exposé on the NMA Motorists.org website attracted the attention of a pro-motorist letter writer from Great Britain, who shared similar concerns and frustrations with Vision Zero programs across the Atlantic. His spot-on observations follow:

* * *

I am writing this from Great Britain, and we are being fed this VZ anti-car nonsense as well.

Sadiq Khan is the Mayor of London and is, of course, very anti-car and wants to impose VZ.

Here is a copy of a letter I wrote to a trade magazine, just slightly altered to suit your American followers.

It would seem that as usual, non-motorized road users can just do what they like and do not have to accept any responsibility for their actions!

Of course, your laws are different to ours, but generally, the theme is the same.

Though this might sound callous, does the price of mobility justify a few deaths and injuries?

Would we really want to sacrifice mobility to live in a totally risk-free society?

Mayor Khan, along with many others, are using this ‘vision’ as part of their ceaseless ‘war on the driver’ by imposing draconian measures on those choosing to drive.

‘Mobility’ means the distribution of goods and services, so how does this equate in the grand scheme of things to Vision Zero?

Do we all stop ‘consuming’ to save lives?

As a driving license holder, I must obey hundreds of rules/regulations, and I am punished if I get them wrong. As a cyclist, there is not much I can get punished for and certainly, there is very little enforcement of regulations. As a pedestrian, I can just do what I like, as there are no offences I can commit listed in the Highway Code!

(The Highway Codes is our national version of the rule book for all road users. There is no ‘jay -walking’ offence in this country)

Every year millions of mostly safe drivers are punished for meaningless infractions of the law, but how many road-using non-drivers are punished? In fact, how many non-drivers have read the Highway Code, even though seventeen pages of the Code are devoted to pedestrians?

By continually putting all the road safety emphasis on the license holder, is it any wonder that accident reduction has stabilized, when the vast majority of pedestrians and cyclists can do what they like with complete impunity from punishment.

NEW RACER SPONSORED BY JIMS MACHINE–
I just found out that I have been added to the JIMS USA website as one of their official sponsored riders and the ONLY woman they are sponsoring. JIMS came on board last year to help me build my 1937 Knucklehead dubbed “Redemption” to raise awareness of narcissistic abuse. As many of you know, I have been featured on various websites and many magazines doing just that.

I am beyond honored to be sponsored by JIMS, a company that makes quality products right here in the USA. Since 1967 JIMS has been designing and manufacturing aftermarket parts and tools for the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. JIMS carries parts and tools for your Knucklehead, Milwaukee-Eight, and every bike in between.

If you want to check it out, it can be seen here- https://jimsusa.com/riders/ and I have attached a screenshot.

CLIMATE CHANGE HOAX COLLAPSES as new science finds human activity has virtually zero impact on global temperatures—

(Natural News) The climate change hoax has collapsed. A devastating series of research papers has just been published, revealing that human activity can account for no more than a .01°C rise in global temperatures, meaning that all the human activity targeted by radical climate change alarmists — combustion engines, airplane flights, diesel tractors — has virtually no measurable impact on the temperature of the planet.

Finnish scientists spearheaded the research, releasing a paper entitled, “No Experimental Evidence for the Significant Anthropogenic Climate Change.”

The paper explains that IPCC analysis of global temperatures suffers from a glaring error — namely, failure to account for “influences of low cloud cover” and how it impacts global temperatures. Natural variations in low cloud cover, which are strongly influenced by cosmic radiation’s ability to penetrate Earth’s atmosphere due to variations in the strength of our planet’s magnetosphere, account for nearly all changes in global temperature, the researchers explain.

As this chart reveals, more cloud cover is inversely related to temperature. In other words, clouds shield the surface of the Earth from the sun, providing shade cover cooling, while a lack of clouds results in more warming:

Cloud cover accounts for the real changes in global temperatures

This is further supported by researchers at Kobe University in Japan who published a nearly simultaneous paper that reveals how changes in our planet’s magnetic field govern the intensity of solar radiation that reaches the lower atmosphere, causing cloud formation that alters global temperatures.

That study, published in Nature, is called, “Intensified East Asian winter monsoon during the last geomagnetic reversal transition.” It states:

Records of suborbital-scale climate variation during the last glacial and Holocene periods can be used to elucidate the mechanisms of rapid climate changes… At least one event was associated with a decrease in the strength of the Earth’s magnetic field. Thus, climate records from the MIS 19 interglacial can be used to elucidate the mechanisms of a variety of climate changes, including testing the effect of changes in geomagnetic dipole field strength on climate through galactic cosmic ray (GCR)-induced cloud formation…

In effect, cosmic rays which are normally deflected via the magnetosphere are, in times of weak or changing magnetic fields emanating from Earth itself, able to penetrate further into Earth’s atmosphere, causing the formation of low-level clouds which cover the land in a kind of “umbrella effect” that shades the land from the sun, allowing cooling to take place. But a lack of clouds makes the surface hotter, as would be expected. This natural phenomenon is now documented to be the primary driver of global temperatures and climate, not human activity.

Burn all the oil you want, in other words, and it’s still just a drop in the bucket compared to the power of the sun and other cosmic influences. All the fossil fuel consumption in the world barely contributes anything to actual global temperatures, the researchers confirmed.

As they explain, the IPCC’s climate models are wildly overestimating the influence of carbon dioxide on global temperatures:

…the [IPCC] models fail to derive the influences of low cloud cover fraction on the global temperature. A too small natural component results in a too large portion for the contribution of the greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. That is why J. KAUPPINEN AND P. MALMI IPCC represents the climate sensitivity more than one order of magnitude larger than our sensitivity 0.24°C. Because the anthropogenic portion in the increased CO2 is less than 10%, we have practically no anthropogenic climate change. The low clouds control mainly the global temperature.

The entire “climate change” hoax is a fraud
Carbon dioxide, in other words, isn’t the “pollutant” that climate change alarmists have long claimed it to be. CO2 won’t destroy the planet and barely has any effect on global temperatures (the IPCC’s estimate of its effect is, according to Finnish researchers, about one order of magnitude too large, or ten times the actual amount).

In fact, NASA was forced to recently admit that carbon dioxide is re-greening the Earth on a massive scale by supporting the growth of rainforests, trees and grasslands. See these maps showing the increase in green plant life, thanks to rising CO2:

Importantly, reducing our global consumption of fossil fuels will have virtually no impact on global temperatures. The far bigger governor of climate and temperatures is the strength and configuration of Earth’s magnetosphere, which has always been in flux since the formation of the planet billions of years ago. The weaker the magnetosphere, the more cosmic rays penetrate the atmosphere, resulting in the generation of clouds, which shield the planet’s surface from the sun. Thus, a weaker magnetosphere causes global cooling, while a stronger magnetosphere results in global warming, according to this research. This phenomenon is called the “Svensmark Effect.”

Some of the most important reasons to have the Emergency Start charger installed in a vehicle are best outlined in testimonials and stories received by LithiumHub customers:
“The Emergency Start gives you piece of mind if your daughter has a dead battery; so she does not have to ask a stranger for a jumpstart, and she can do everything on her own from the comfort of her vehicle seat, with her smartphone.” —Jeff Rudd

Roger Diebold described a potentially problematic situation in which he was happy to have his own Emergency Start ready and installed. After spending hours at his hunting tree stand one day, five miles away from the closest road, he packed up to leave. Only to discover that he had accidentally forgotten to completely shut down his UTV. To his frustration, he realized that the main battery on the UTV was completely drained, potentially leaving him with a long walk to find help. With just a push on the Emergency Start function button however, Roger’s UTV started up quickly and he was able to drive safely out of the woods.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT VOCABULARY LESSON– definiendum
[ dih-fin-ee-en-duhm ]
noun

something that is or is to be defined, especially the term at the head of a dictionary entry.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF DEFINIENDUM?
Definiendum comes straight from Latin definiendum “to be defined.” In Latin grammar, definiendum is a gerundive, a kind of verbal adjective showing, among other things, obligation or necessity.

Definiendum derives from the verb definire “to fix the limits of, bound, define,” a compound of the preposition and intensive prefix de, de– and the simple verb finire “to mark out or form the boundaries of,” a derivative of the noun finis “boundary (of a territory).”

Definiendum is a technical term used in lexicography and logic. A similar gerundive, demonstrandum “to be demonstrated,” appears in Q.E.D., an abbreviation of quod erat demonstrandum, “what was to be demonstrated,” used at the end of a proof in geometry. Definiendum entered English in the second half of the 19th century.

HOW IS DEFINIENDUM USED?
Discussions of definition distinguish between the definiendum (the word or phrase that is to be defined) and the definiens (the word of phrase that is used to define it).

PATRICK HANKS, “DEFINITION,” THE OXFORD HANDBOOK OF LEXICOGRAPHY, 2016

Don’t make the definiens technical or subtle if the definiendum is not technical or subtle.

SALT TORPEDO TIPS– Been reading about your salt torpedo. I love it. Regarding the shimmy. The six degrees castor should be fine. 10 won’t hurt.

A little bit of toe out is much better than a little toe in. Of course, the wheels have to be true and balanced perfect especially on something that light. Any kind of a tire flaw will cause a shimmy.

Put a constant tension on the steering linkage and it will compensate for any looseness. I learned all this with this old Ford I beam axles in hot rods.

I got to read all the past articles. I think you have a winner there. I would love to drive it.

Filming in Malaga will take place in the areas of La Alcazaba, Gibralfaro and the beautiful Port of Málaga and will also take the team to areas of the province such as Caminito de Rey, the Chorro waterfall, the cobbled alleys of white-washed Frigiliana, the foothills of the Torcal mountain range and other areas of the Antequera region.

The series is a drama that exposes the dichotomy between club members and the people they deal with.
At the other end of the spectrum, Coll is getting ready to begin a tour of Spain with ‘A Chorus Line’ taking her to Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao could end crossing the Atlantic to appear in the musical mecca that is Broadway.

A NEW ADVENTURE BEGINS—And a new project. I want to meet with the historical society in Deadwood to discuss what I can or cannot do to this home in the historic district. I need to ask them if a Chinese whorehouse theme is cool? Sin Wu is anxious to hang out.

Rumor has it, there are 20 Hamsters living in the Badlands. I’ll meet with Keith Terry, of Terry Components this week to discuss his home in Spearfish, which was hit by lightning last year and nearly burnt down.

Crazy. This original Knucklehead went for $200,000 at the Vegas auction last weekend. A couple of Indian Larry choppers went for over that. Some very cool custom bikes went for less than $15,000. It’s all about the celebrity level.

If you know Danny Gray reach out to him. He hasn’t been feeling well and could use some support.

The valet scraping the sidewalks removing snow said it would stop at 5:00. Amazing, it’s a quarter-to and it stopped, and the sky is beginning to clear.

The Philippines Is Making Roads and Cement With Plastic Garbage

One of the world’s top plastic polluters is giving its garbage a second life by using it to construct much-needed infrastructure.

Philippine companies like San Miguel Corp. and Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. are using discarded shopping bags, sachet wrappers and plastic packaging to fire cement plants and build roads as the country embarks on an 8 trillion-peso ($157 billion) infrastructure push through 2022.

San Miguel has laid down its first road combining plastic scraps with asphalt, it said in November. The surface material, developed with Dow Chemical Co., used 900 kilograms (1,984 pounds) of plastic to pave a 1,500-square meter (16,145-square foot) test site near the capital.

For Aboitiz’s Republic Cement & Building Materials Inc., plastic serves as an alternative to coal for heating kilns used in making cement. The company is sourcing waste from consumer giants like Nestlé Philippines Inc. and Unilever Philippines Inc. as it processes at least 25,000 tons of plastic annually, director Angela Edralin-Valencia said in an interview.

The two initiatives target soft plastics that are hard to recycle and make up a significant chunk of the trash piling up in Philippine landfills and clogging waterways. Waste management systems have failed to keep up with a growing population and robust consumption in the Southeast Asian nation, which uses 48 million shopping bags and 164 million plastic sachets every day, according to the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, or GAIA.

It’s a similar story across Asia’s emerging markets, where rising incomes and burgeoning middle classes have spurred greater plastic use. China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are the top sources of plastic waste in the world’s oceans, according to Ocean Conservancy Inc. and McKinsey & Co.

With the Philippine government planning a construction spree of airports, highways, rails, bridges and dams over the next three years, San Miguel and Republic Cement hope to tap the expected spike in activity to make a dent in the country’s plastic problem.

The “Build, Build, Build” program is the centerpiece of President Rodrigo Duterte’s blueprint for the Philippines, one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies. Gross domestic product is expected to grow 6.5%-7.5% a year through the end of 2022, driven by infrastructure spending.

San Miguel, the Philippines’ largest company, is building more than 900 billion pesos worth of the government’s flagship projects, including several toll roads around the capital and a 2,400-hectare complex north of Manila that will be the country’s biggest airport.

According to San Miguel’s initial findings, roads using plastic scraps exceed government standards and are stronger and more durable than those made with conventional asphalt.

Garbage Collection

Republic Cement likewise expects to “comfortably meet” market demand for cement, while using plastic to replace as much as 10% of its coal requirements, Valencia said.

The company could process as much as four times more plastic waste, but limited garbage collection and poor segregation by households and at landfills make it difficult to sift for usable scraps, Valencia said.

Nestlé and Unilever have launched their own collection programs, offering cash and free products like shampoo and laundry detergent — also packaged in sachets — for plastic scraps that are properly cleaned and cut. Both companies aim to collect and process more plastic than they produce, and make 100% of their packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025, they said in separate statements.

“Nestlé is aiming for plastic neutrality, which is essentially recovering plastics equal to what we produce,” Kais Marzouki, chairman and chief executive officer of the Philippine unit, said in a statement.

Initiatives to address the issue can have unforeseen consequences. Shredding plastic for asphalt and cement production breaks down waste to microplastics that are even more difficult to collect and reuse, said Beau Baconguis, GAIA’s regional plastic campaigner for Asia-Pacific. Feeding plastic into cement kilns releases toxic fumes, she added.

“It’s garbage in, garbage out,” she said.

Republic Cement’s Valencia says plastic-derived fuel involves less carbon emission than coal, while other fumes are subject to regular government monitoring. Unlike incineration, which is banned in the Philippines, the higher temperatures in cement kilns leave behind no plastic ash, Valencia said.

As the Philippines mulls regulations on the import and use of single-use plastic, GAIA’s Baconguis said companies should also rethink how they package and market their products.

“Companies need to create an entire closed-loop system to address the plastic waste they’re generating,” she said. Until then, corporate initiatives are “just a band-aid solution to the problem.”

Billy Joel’s motorcycle collection vandalised

by Bang Showbiz from http://www.contactmusic.net/

Billy Joel’s beloved 12 motorcycles were trashed when a thief broke into his home over the weekend.

Bill Joel’s motorcycles were trashed when a thief broke into his home over the weekend.

The ‘Piano Man’ hitmaker called police on Monday (27.01.20) morning when he discovered someone had obtained access to his house in Long Island and damaged his property.

Nassau County police told TMZ 12 motorcycles and a home office on the property had been vandalised and it seems that the burglars smashed through a glass door leading into the garage.

It is unclear whether anything was stolen or whether Billy was at home at the time of the break-in, which took place at some point between Saturday (25.01.20) and Monday.

The 70-year-old singer – who is a known bike enthusiast and even owns a nearby motorcycle story – gave a statement to police and they are currently investigating.

Billy previously insisted he’ll never retire because he has the ”greatest job in the world”.

Asked if he’s considered retirement, he said: ”I have the greatest job in the world. You get up there, you make a lot of noise, girls scream, and you get s**tloads of money. Are you f***ing kidding me?”

But if he does decide to quit performing, the ‘Just the Way You Are’ singer already knows what he wants to happen in his final shows.

He continued: ”Now, I do have an idea for a farewell tour.

”The stage is a living-room set: couch, TV, coffee table, food. And there’s bulletproof glass between me and the audience.

”Then I come out and lay down on the couch. I grab the remote and start watching TV.

”The crowd after a couple minutes goes, ‘F**k this’, and starts throwing s**t at the glass.

”I’ll have created a bond between me and the audience where I know they will never pay another nickel to see me again.”

Motorcycle Touring the North Coast 500 in Scotland

by Ryan Beitler from https://www.travelmag.co.uk/

With so many great options for motorcycle touring in the United Kingdom, there is likely no better choice than the Scottish Highlands. In the Highlands there is some of the most beautiful scenery and unspoiled wilderness in the county. There are a variety of ways to go through stunning Scottish nature. Going through the region on the North Coast 500 with a motorcycle will not only provide the healing solitude many riders yearn for, it offers things to do and see. The NC500 is the ultimate road for biking, and there are multiple ways to do it.

Guided or Solo

Depending on your preference, you can ride the NC500 through the Highlands with or without a guide. If you can handle the section of intense riding, you will be fine on your own. Furthermore it can provide a sense of serenity and peace when you are riding through the rolling hills of the Highlands. But if you are looking for companionship or someone to help you know where you are and where you are headed, getting a guide can be fulfilling. It all has to do with what you are looking for. Do you want a sense of adventure or to get where you’re going as safely and peacefully as possible? You have the option.

Scenery in the Highlands

It goes without saying that the scenery in the Scottish Highlands is gorgeous. Riding through the nature of this region is captivating and spiritual. It is arguably the main reasons to take a tour on the North Coast 500. Along this route you go through the Trossachs National Park, go into a Cairgnorms National Park, and pass by Lake Lomomd. Furthermore, there is the town of Loch Ness, home of the Loch Ness monster also called Nessie. You will travel through the Caledonian Canal to Fort William, which is the adventure capital of the United Kingdom. You will also have the chance to visit some of the tranquil and beautiful islands around here, the Inner and Outer Hebrides, and the Isle of Skye.

Stuff to Do

In addition to some spectacular vistas, there are some great things to do and see on your route. There is the Smoo cave, which is a dramatic sea cave that boasts on the largest entrances to any sea cave in the UK. You can also visit the Eilean Donan Castle. Near Cairgnorms there are the Balmoral Castle and famous whiskey distilleries. If you are interested in prehistoric history, the Camster Ciarns are a burial site on the coast that was originally built five thousand years ago.

Things you Should Know

While a lot of visitors will come to ride through the Highlands in the summer, it can get pretty busy during these peak months. The shoulder seasons are better for both the road and the weather. The North Coast 500 is really great in either direction but it is arguably a more pleasant ride to go counter-clockwise. Riding this way takes you along the coast for the duration, it also puts some of the tough riding in the beginning so you can enjoy leisurely during the last days of your trip. The stretch over the Pass of the Cattle that goes into Applecross is one of the most challenging sections of the NC50, which is known for adverse conditions.

If you are willing to rough it a bit here and there, you can save some money on your trip through the Highlands. According to MoneyPug, a site that is used in the UK to find cheap holidays, there are hostels in the region and a free campsite by the YHA in Torridon. There are fuel pumps open for 24 hours along the route. While some people do the NC500 in just three days, it can be better to take more time and enjoy the scenery and the sites.

It doesn’t matter what you’re looking for in a ride, you can find it in the Scottish Highlands along the North Coast 500. It is not surprising that this route is known as one of the best for bikers around the world. It is rugged, full of things to do, people to meet, and, above all else, it is gorgeous.

NEWS FROM BILTWELL IN NEPAL

Gnarly in Nepal
Our trip with Motorcycle Sherpa

Our first taste of Nepal was riding through suspension bridges and yielding while full packs of goats and yaks took over the road. We got to see some temples, tons of monkeys, and an open air cremation. We visited more temples and ate at Yac Donalds where we were served “Happy Meals” which consisted of a yak burger, fries, and juice. About mid-trip, we got a “free day” where there was no riding and we all got to do everything at our own leisure. We went to a spa, got tattoos, and shopped a bunch.” -Geoff
