17-year flashbacks from the arena – June 4, 2002 . . .

(in memory and appreciation of Bob Doiron) . . .
Prior to 2002, many of us had to bang on a lot of doors and pull some teeth each year to get the MA Governor to acknowledge and proclaim a “motorcycle safety awareness period.”
On June 4, 2002, acting MA Governor Jane Swift signed Senate Bill 2286, Chief Sponsors, Senator Bruce Tarr, Bob Hedlund, Reps. Anne Gobi and Brad Hill, into law, establishing General Laws, Chapter 6, Section 15NNNN, . . . MAKING LAW which reads
“The governor shall annually issue a proclamation setting apart the period beginning the last week of March to the last week of April, inclusive, as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Time, to promote motorcycle safety, education and awareness, and recommending that this time be observed in an appropriate manner by various agencies, associations, groups, clubs and businesses.”
Before the bill was passed, it had the ‘month of May’ as the period, . . .when a study of 100 motorcycle fatalities in Massachusetts from 1998-2000 showed more the 25% of those fatalities occurred before May (started by the AMA in the early 1990’s for “Motorcycles and You”).
We said, “why wait until May when riders are being killed in March and April?” Senator Hedlund amended his bill, and we got er’ done.
In the Registrar of Motor Vehicles office – we contacted Bob Doiron, creator of the “Check Twice” slogan in 1982 and recently retired moving to NH, and the Registrar requested Bob’s authorization for the Commonwealth to adopt his “Check Twice – Save a Life, MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE” as the state’s motto. Bob teared up a bit, having spent over 20 years trying to get the state as an active participant promoting motorcycle awareness. He immediately granted such authorization.
While ‘everyday’ should be ‘motorcycle awareness day,’ today, June 4 is the anniversary of the bill being enacted. Year 2019 is the 17th year our Governor has followed this law. Our Registry of Motor Vehicle enthusiastically promotes motorcycle safety, awareness and training, which has contributed to reduced accidents and fatalities.
TONS of thanks to all those then involved in this bikers arena and its history . . . – YOUR work and effort has and continues to lessen some of the tragedies.

Charges after West Australian cops take part in national ‘day of action’ against MC.

Seven alleged Rebels MC members or associates in WA, have been charged with 25 offences, as part of a recent national ‘day of action’  targeting the club.

The day involved operational raids on Rebels clubhouses in Rockingham and Bunbury.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts said the year-long blitz on the club had resulted in more than 400 charges being laid, while netting drugs, cash and illegal weapons.

“The fact of the matter is outlaw motorcycle gangs are just that,” she said.

“They operate outside of the law, they do untold harm in our community and they are peddling drugs into our community.”

State Crime Acting Assistant Commissioner Alan Morton said the national day of action on Wednesday was a “culmination of 12 months of effort”.

“These gangs don’t care for the harm they cause our community, they are motivated purely by power and greed.” he said.

“Outlaw motorcycle gangs recruit aggressively with the promise of a glamorous lifestyle when nothing could be more further from the truth.”

The charges, laid on the day  related to unspecified drugs, extortion and stolen property offences.

Roberts said the haul from the last 12 months included methamphetamine and cocaine with an estimated street value of more than $4 million, illegal firearms and nearly half a million dollars in cash.

She said 78 people associated with the Rebels were facing charges such as aggravated armed robbery, threats to kill, extortion and drug offences.

RICK LANG RELEASES INSPIRED NEW SINGLE “MY DADDY’S SHOES” JUST IN TIME FOR FATHER’S DAY

“I am beyond thrilled to announce the release of a new single “My Daddy’s Shoes” to the global radio world. I wrote the song to honor the Father’s Day Tradition, it is based on my relationship with my dad who tragically passed away in 1989. It took me nearly 30 years to come up with the words to properly pay tribute to dad in a song, but it was well worth the wait. It was written from my feelings, from the heart.

‘My Daddy’s Shoes’ is a collaboration with good friend Troy Engle and was recorded at Troy’s ‘The Track Shack’ studio. It features Troy on vocals and all instruments.

I sincerely hope that ‘My Daddy’s Shoes’ helps to enhance everyone’s Father’s Day celebration this year, and for many years to come.

A big thank you to Robert and Lynda at AirPlay Direct for their support and guidance that has proven invaluable in helping me reach so many radio programmers through APD, and continuing to build my RLM Music Brand.”

“The love behind the words from Rick Lang’s pen are clearly evident, and invoke the inevitable smiles and tears while remembering my own monumental efforts to fill “My Daddy’s Shoes.” Beautiful song.”

~ Carl Jackson

“Over the years one begins to realize our dads knew more than we thought they did. This beautiful new song “My Daddy’s Shoes” by Rick Lang puts it all in perspective and renews the memories of the love that father’s give to each of us.” ~ Jim Fisher, Acoustic Crossings WGCS

*Please note: Hall of Fame Highlights will be published as we receive them from the Inductees. We look forward to sharing information about all of our Inductees in the weeks and months to come.

Danny Fitzmaurice

As an 11 year old in 1970, Dan’s neighbor Ron Helms opened a new H-D dealership. The business was small with many challenges, it did not take this kid long to figure out an opportunity to volunteer was possible. From this point on most of Dan’s life going forward will have revolved around motorcycles. He wanted to know how to develop and make more power from all the great people he would encounter. Dan worked day jobs and repaired engines at night, all to help fund more racing.  As skills developed, the dream of getting a Pro license in 1981 was quickly realized, after the spring Florida Racing Series these dreams went up in smoke when Dan and racing/business partner, Dave Zehner, realized their expanding engine business was growing fast. This step led to the official formation of Zipper’s in May 1981 with Dave Zehner.

They were blessed with plenty of customers building and tuning street and track engines, many for dirt and asphalt drag racing. As the U.S. economy was improving, business was growing and fans wanted to attend and ride to racetracks to see the action. Because of the continued growth of Zipper’s, commitment to our customers and staff, by 1995 Dan and Dave started to scale back racing, selectively attending events to compete in. They were lucky to race during a time of great competition and the ability to compete against and learn from some of the best in the industry.
At the time they set many records and championships racing in 6 different sanctions. Today those records are long gone with progress of new machines and innovation as they should.  Dan remains grateful for the impact that so many people made on his experiences of racing.

Local bikers ask drivers to “look twice”

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – With summer here, you may see more bikers on the roads.

A group of local female bikers wants motorists to understand how important getting home whole is.

“We’re moms. We’re wives, we’re daughters, we’re grandmothers and we just want to make it home in one piece and we want to enjoy our ride getting there,” said Capri Payne, a local biker.

An issue these bikers have run into is distracted driving.

“I’ve had more near calls through cell phone usage than anything,” said Payne.

For most, it’s only a close encounter, but for Gabriel Hass, it was a scary reality.

“We were going through the light and I guess some lady was just on her phone,” said Hass.

A collision with a distracted driver almost cost Hass her life.

“I’m going to die, this is it. You know, I’m never going to see my kids again,” said Hass.

The wreck left Hass with serious injuries.

“Two broken legs, my femur actually pushed out my kneecap, my tibia pushed out by my ankle,” said Hass.

Hass also suffered from road rash, her handlebars went through her chest, and she was on a ventilator for weeks.

Some tips Payne has for motorists and fellow bikers include making sure not to get in the middle of a group of bikers, they’re in a group for safety reasons.

She also said not to blow your grass clippings into the road when mowing, it creates a dangerous situation for bikers similar to black ice.

RED LIGHT cameras banned in Texas

By Travis Fedschun | Fox News

Drivers in the Lone Star State are about to be seeing less red.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Saturday evening he signed legislation that bans red light cameras across the state.

House Bill 1361, authored by Republican state Rep. Jonathan Stickland, would prohibit the use of “photographic traffic signal enforcement systems.”

RED-LIGHT CAMERAS COME UNDER FIRE, AT LEAST 7 STATES TRYING TO BAN THEM

The Republican governor took to Twitter to give people a personal view of him signing House Bill 1631.

“Hi, Governor Greg Abbott here at the capitol on Saturday, signing bills,” he said.

Seconds later, the governor held up the bill with his signature, saying the document “is now law.”

Stickland told FOX7 the bill was motivated by “a lot of reason.”

“No.1, privacy concerns. We think that the right to due process matters,” he told FOX7. “You have the right to face your accuser in court.”

The new law included a grandfather clause for cities involved in red light camera contracts that have yet to end, except if the contract includes a provision allowing for state law to break it.

“So, currently, we think as it is, the bill will continue to operate red light cameras in just two cities for a couple of years until the contract is timed out,” Stickland told FOX7.

Ever since becoming legal in 2007, Texas lawmakers have made attempts to turn the cameras off that were unsuccessful until now, according to the Star-Telegram.
