Another Successful Bikers Inside the Beltway Where Bikers are Face to Face with Lawmakers!

This week was the 11th Annual Michael “Boz” Kerr Bikers Inside the Beltway event in Washington D.C. Nearly 150 bikers from 28 states made the journey to Washington D.C., to advocate for issues of importance to the motorcycle community. With kickstands up at 6:45am, an armada of bikes rolled down the streets of Washington to the doorstep of the U.S. Capitol Building.
Riders met with almost 300 Congressional offices to discuss issues like motorcycle profiling, autonomous vehicle technology, the definition of a motorcycle and consumer education surrounding ethanol. It goes without saying that when 100 plus bikers start roaming the halls of Congress people take notice. In fact, we were so visible that a Congressman started up a conversation with a few riders in an elevator and the next day signed on to our profiling resolution!
The MRF would like to thank all those that participated in the Bikers Inside the Beltway event. We know that coming to Washington requires time, money and effort on your behalf, but it is an invaluable way for us to advocate for our priorities. Included in the contingent were representatives from many State Motorcycle Rights Organizations (SMRO), the Confederation of Clubs, the National Coalition of Motorcyclists, the National Council of Clubs and the Motorcycle Profiling Project. Everyone coming together in Washington, to accomplish the shared goals. The D.C. team would not be successful without the grassroots effort of our members and partners.
Next week Congress is in recess for Memorial Day and most lawmakers will return home to their districts to meet with constituents. If you were unable to make it to Washington, next week is a great opportunity to stop by your Congressman’s local office to chat with them about the motorcycle community. Below is a link to the issue papers on topics we discussed in Washington. These one-page papers are a great way to educate lawmakers on issues of importance to motorcyclists. First Time Riders
While bikers from around the country were meeting with lawmakers, the MRF in connection with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and MRF Awareness & Education (MRF A&E), hosted an open house where Capitol Hill staff had the opportunity to “ride a motorcycle” inside a government building. The smart trainer provided by MRF A&E was a unique opportunity for Capitol Hill staffers to try their hand at riding a motorcycle. For many, this was their first experience to understand the skills required to operate a motorcycle.
The leadership of the MRF including President Kirk “Hardtail” Willardand Vice President Jay Jackson welcomed Michael Fox from the NTSB to the open house. Michael is the lead government investigator for all accidents involving motorcycles nationwide. Michael is a passionate motorcyclist who understands the balance between safety and personal freedom. Michael was excited to be part of Bikers Inside the Beltway and pledged to work with the MRF to find common ground on issues we can agree on.
Awards
Bikers Inside the Beltway was the perfect opportunity for the MRF to thank specific lawmakers who have been true champions for our movement. On Tuesday, Senator John Thune of South Dakota and Congressman Mike Burgess of Texas were presented with their MRF Legislator of the Year vests.
Senator Thune was the lead Republican in introducing the AV START Act – the first federal framework to mandate the regulation of automated vehicles. Prior to the bill’s introduction, his office worked directly with ABATE of South Dakota and the MRF to understand riders’ concerns on the issue and then included motorcycle-specific considerations in the bill.
Jiggs Cressy, Executive Director of ABATE of South Dakota presented Senator Thune with his vest and stated, “Senator Thune has not only been a close family friend but has also been a dedicated servant to South Dakota for many years. He has also been a supporter of the mission of ABATE of South Dakota, and the MRF. Senator Thune and his staff have always made time to listen to the concerns and opinions of motorcyclists from both South Dakota and across the country. I can’t think of any Senator more deserving of this honor than Senator Thune.”
At a ceremony in front of the U.S. Capitol with riders in attendance, Kirk “Hardtail” Willard presented Congressman Burgess with his legislator of the year vest. Congressman Burgess spoke about the formation of the House Motorcycle Caucus and his efforts over the last decade to fight for the rights of motorcyclists. Congressman Burgess was joined at the podium by Congressmen Tim Walberg of Michigan and Congressman Troy Balderson of Ohio. All three Congressman are riders, members of the House Motorcycle Caucus and passionate about protecting riders on and off the road.
For 30 minutes after the ceremony the three Congressmen chatted with riders from all over the country, sharing stories about their experiences and their efforts back home to fight for issues of importance to motorcyclists. The MRF thanks not only Senator Thune and Congressman Burgess but Congressman Walberg, Congressman Balderson and all the Members of Congress who took time this week to meet with and listen to riders.

An event of this size requires hard work and long hours by board members, employees and volunteers. A few individuals went above and beyond, and we’d like to give them a special shout out.
Tiffany Cipoletti, MRF Director of Operations, not only spent hours scheduling meetings and drafting talking points but also spent nearly three full days navigating the bureaucratic maze that is the Washington D.C. Department of Parking. This effort allowed over 100 motorcycles to safely ride and park in our nation’s capital.
Dave Dwyer, SSMRO Representative to the MRF board and fellow ABATE of Wisconsin member ‘Seven’ lead the procession of motorcycles from the hotel in Virginia to the steps of the U.S. Capitol.
Fred Harrell, MRF Director of Conferences and Events, coordinated affordable hotel packages and meeting space for attendees. This is no easy feat in one of the most expensive metropolitan areas of our country.
Ron Braaksma from the MRF A&E, drove over 1,000 miles to Washington with a smart trainer hitched to his truck. The smart trainer gave congressional staff a small look into the skill set that is required to ride a motorcycle.
Finally, we would like to thank our SSMRO partners for supporting this event, the MRF and its board members who spent the days prior to the event in meetings and discussion groups working to keep the MRF a vibrant and relevant voice for motorcyclists.

The Laconia Motorcycle Week® Welcoming Press Conference on Thursday, June 6th, 2019 has a new home this year at the North East Motor Sports Museum at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, located on NH Route 106 in Loudon, NH. The event will begin at 11am and last approximately one hour.

The 10th annual Idaho Thunder Patriot Ride

The 10th annual Idaho Thunder Patriot Ride is Sunday, June 2nd and this year they’re giving away a Harley Davidson worth more than $10,000. The Patriot Ride will take off Sunday morning around 9:30 from High Desert Harley Davidson in Meridian. There is a 1,200 motorcycle cap so if you’re interested and haven’t registered, you can do so now by clicking HERE.
Registration in advance is $25 per person which includes the ride and the patch. Day of registration is $30 per person. V.I.P. tickets are $100 and you can only purchase those at High Desert Harley Davidson. V.I.P. includes a shirt, the ride, a patch, and front of ride placement. The ride is limited to 1,200 people so make sure to register a.s.a.p.
The entire event will start at High Desert Harley Davidson (2310 East Cinema Dr. Meridian, ID.) and ends 55 miles away at Carl Miller Park in Mountain Home.
It’s always so surreal watching our local law enforcement block off freeway entrances and escort all these riders through Boise who ride in honor of the Idaho Guard & Reserve, Family Support Fund, and Operation Warmheart. It’s a sight to see.

We can punish you and according to the experts the millennials can’t do anything. They can’t drive, ride motorcycles or build anything. They can only stare at their cell phones and play with Instagram. Hell they can’t write, just take photos and try to be cool.
What a bunch of bullshit.
On the other hand there are can-do folks everywhere in our industry trying to make good-shit happen. Hell, the MAG group, who thought it was cool to buy companies for a major price and roll them into one, has struggled with their business formula, created somewhat by Arney Acherman. They bought PM, Vance and Hines, Progressive Shocks, Bully Brand, J&P and then Tucker Rocky and Biker’s Choice. Now they are breaking up the pack. But now it’s up to the individual companies to take a Can-Do attitude and revive their individual brands. See below:

May 21, 2019 – Dallas TX – Motorsport Aftermarket Group (MAG) today announced a new and significant change to managing the multi-brand organization to its 1500 employees.
“We’ve asked each of our senior leaders to focus 100% of their efforts on creating value, delivering growth and expanding the entrepreneurial mindset within their business unit and their brands. A brother of mine for over 40 years had his sailing magazine, Latitudes and Attitudes, stolen from him about five years ago. He struggled, but his readers helped him continue with Cruising Outpost. Just in the last couple of months he was able to retrieve his original title and the first new issue of the new Latitudes and Attitudes hit the stands yesterday.
Hell, the Salt Torpedo effort has been a 6-year odyssey and it will rumble this year because we said we can do it. So far so good.
Hell, the President is trying to do something about the infrastructure and make it fun to drive once more. I believe he’s a can-do guy and he will make something happen against all odds.
Look at what Polaris did with Indian. Polaris is a can-do organization.

DOG’S LIFE INTERRUPTED–Healthy pet put down in Virginia so it can be buried with owner
Debate rages after dog was euthanized according to owner’s dying wish
The dog was put down despite the efforts of animal shelter workers who spent two weeks trying to talk the executor of the woman’s estate out of the plan.
The unusual death of a woman’s dog in Virginia has sparked outcry and a debate over whether it is ok to kill a healthy pet and bury it with its owner according to their dying wish.
Emma, a shih tzu mix, was euthanized and cremated in March as per its owner’s will. The dog was put down despite the efforts of animal shelter workers who spent two weeks trying to talk the executor of the woman’s estate out of the plan.
Emma was reportedly taken to a vet, put down and then taken to a pet cremation center in Richmond, Virginia, and the ashes given to the executor in an urn for burial.
“We did suggest they could sign the dog over on numerous occasions, because it’s a dog we could easily find a home for and re-home,” said Carrie Jones, manager of Chesterfield Animal Services.
In Virginia, pets are considered personal property and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, vets are allowed to perform euthanasia in such cases.
Some cemeteries are also allowed to bury pets with their owners, so the issue is more an ethical than a legal one.
Dr Kenny Lucas, a veterinarian at the Shady Grove animal clinic, said he wouldn’t go ahead with such a request. “Whenever we’re faced with a euthanasia situation, it’s a very emotional situation – and beyond everything we talk about – that we need to do ethically, and we’ve taken an oath to do,” he told WWBT. “Also it’s something we take home too. It weighs on us as professionals.”
Larry Spiaggi, the president of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association said he found the practice of euthanising a healthy dog and burying it with its owner abhorrent.
A state lawmaker is considering legislation to address the problem.

The Pope met with his Cardinals to discuss a proposal from Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Israel.
“Your Holiness”, said one of his Cardinals, “Mr Netanyahu wants to challenge you to a game of golf to show the friendship and ecumenical spirit shared by the Jewish and Catholic faiths.”
The Pope thought this was a good idea but he had never held a golf club in his hands. “Don’t we have a Cardinal to represent me?” he asked.
“None who plays very well,” a Cardinal replied. “But, there’s a man named Jack Nicklaus, an American golfer who is a devout Catholic. We can offer to make him a Cardinal. Then ask him to play Mr. Netanyahu as your personal representative. In addition, to showing our spirit of cooperation, we’ll also win the match.”
Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The call was made and of course, Nicklaus was honored and agreed to play.
The day after the match, Nicklaus reported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of the result. “I have some good news and some bad news, your Holiness, ” said Nicklaus.
“Tell me the good news first, Cardinal Nicklaus,” said the Pope.
“Well, your Holiness, I don’t like to brag, but even though I’ve played some pretty terrific rounds of golf in my life, this was the best I have ever played, by far. I must have been inspired from above. My drives were long and true, my irons were accurate and purposeful, and my putting was perfect. With all due respect, my play was truly miraculous.”
“There’s bad news?” asked the Pope.
“Yes, I lost by three strokes to Rabbi Tiger Woods.”

THE OUTLAW CLUB FINE OF $500,000–Mongols biker club hit with hefty fine, but holds on to trademarked logo– A federal judge Friday slapped the Mongols motorcycle club with a sizable fine and probation as punishment in a racketeering case, but rebuffed another attempt by prosecutors to strip the notoriously violent group of trademarks it holds on its logo.
At a sentencing hearing in Santa Ana, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter fined the Mongols $500,000 and put the club on probation for five years, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office said. Prosecutors had asked Carter to fine the club $1 million, the maximum amount allowed under the law.
A jury in December convicted the Mongols organization of racketeering and conspiracy charges, finding that it shared responsibility for murder, attempted murder and drug crimes committed by individual members.
The government put the organization as a whole on trial in an unusual attempt to take control of trademarks the club owns that gives it legal control over its insignia — a Genghis Khan-inspired figure in sunglasses riding a motorcycle beneath the group’s name. The image, which only members are permitted to display on riding jackets, is a crucial part of the group’s identity and prosecutors believed losing control of it would go a long way toward dismantling the Mongols.
Judge refuses to strip Mongols biker club of trademarked logo. The jury in the case sided with prosecutors, finding the trademarked image was tied closely enough to the racketeering conspiracy the club carried out that it should be forfeited to the government.
But Carter intervened, refusing to approve the forfeiture. In a March order, the judge said denying Mongol members the ability to display the logo would overstep the right to free expression embedded in the 1st Amendment, as well as the 8th Amendment’s ban on excessive penalties.
In the lead-up to Friday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutors tried again, suggesting a compromise of sorts. In a written filing, they asked Carter to order the Mongols to forfeit its trademarks so it would no longer be able to prevent others from using the image. Such an order, the prosecutors argued, would not prevent Mongol members from displaying the image as well and, so, would not cross any constitutional lines.
Carter was not persuaded and denied the request.
Thom Mrozak, the spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office, declined to comment on whether the government planned to appeal.

GUN NUT REPORT–California: DOJ Submits Proposed Regulations Regarding Upcoming Ammunition Transfer Background Check Requirements to Office of Administrative Law
Beginning July 1, 2019, all ammunition transactions in the state of California will be subject to a background check requirement. But in order to implement this requirement, the California Department of Justice (“DOJ”) must first adopt necessary regulations which, as of yesterday, have been submitted to the Office of Administrative Law (“OAL”) for review.
As reported earlier, California gun owners were given an opportunity to comment on DOJ’s proposed regulations on two separate occasions. NRA and CRPA jointly submitted two comprehensive comment letters on DOJ’s proposal. The first letter highlighted the many key substantive provisions lacking in the proposal and serious issues as to the required authority, clarity, and consistency required by California’s Administrative Procedures Act. The second letter addressed key revisions and statements made by DOJ during a recent stakeholder’s meeting concerning the proposed regulations.
OAL has until July 1—the day the new requirements are scheduled to take effect—to approve or deny DOJ’s proposed regulations. Assuming OAL approves, California gun owners need to know what to expect when purchasing ammunition beginning July 1. To that end, NRA and CRPA have prepared a comprehensive Information Bulletin addressing many frequently asked questions regarding the upcoming ammunition background check requirements.
In the meantime, NRA and CRPA are working to obtain a copy of the regulations as submitted to OAL to determine any necessary course of action. Members should also know that a lawsuit, titled Rhode v. Becerra, has already been filed challenging California’s new ammunition sales restrictions.

I mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a cold beer. The day was really quite beautiful, and the drink facilitated some deep thinking.
My wife walked by and asked me what I was doing, and I said, “Nothing.”
She then said that’s what you did yesterday—to which I replied—”I WASN’T DONE , SO I’M IN THE MIDDLE OF FINISHING RIGHT NOW.”
The reason I said “nothing” instead of saying “just thinking” is because she then would have asked, “About what?” At that point I would have had to explain that men are deep thinkers about various topics, which would lead to other questions.
Finally I pondered an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the nuts? Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the nuts, but how could they know?
Well, after another beer, and some more heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with an answer to that question. Getting kicked in the nuts is more painful than having a baby, and even though I obviously couldn’t really know, here is the reason for my conclusion. A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, “It might be nice to have another child.”
On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, “You know, I think I would like another kick in the nuts.”
I rest my case. Time for another beer, and then maybe a nap.

FREEDOM IS ALIVE IN TEXAS–Texas lawmakers send bill to governor that would eventually outlaw red-light cameras

The Republican-led push to rid Texas intersections of red-light cameras moved one step closer to becoming law after the state Senate signed off on a measure with that aim Friday, sending the bill to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk.
House Bill 1631 cleared the chamber on a 23-8 vote after several back-and-forths among senators about studies that both support and challenge the efficacy of the devices when it comes to promoting safer streets. The Senate left in place a key provision to allow local governments to continue operating cameras until they finish out any contracts in effect as of May 7.
“Red-light cameras violate the right to due process guaranteed under Article 1 of the Texas Constitution by creating a presumption that the registered owner of the car committed a violation when in fact that may not have been the case,” said state Sen. Bob Hall, R-Edgewood, who is sponsoring the legislation originally offered by state Rep. Jonathan Stickland, R-Bedford.
Many city officials and local law enforcement officials oppose the legislation, arguing that cameras reduce deadly accidents and bring in revenue for trauma care centers and local governments. Gesturing toward a binder with 25 studies that suggest the opposite, Hall fended off questions from fellow senators who asked about the potential loss of revenue, particularly the dollars that go to trauma care centers, from fines on drivers who run red lights.
In the 2017 fiscal year, $18.3 million from red-light camera fines went to the state’s trauma care. The bill’s fiscal note indicates banning cameras would cut $28 million in funding for trauma centers over the next two years. But Hall told his colleagues that the issue had been resolved with the chamber’s budget writers, who found a way to make up the difference through another revenue stream.

The grass conspiracy: The gentleman mowing the grass is doing what he can there. In rural areas like what that appears to be, the county road department or the department of corrections probably took care of this tax paid service. As years go by, the leaders have learned to put that part of the budget in their paycheck and either the road department director will figure how to mow the roadways every two months or the landowner will do it themselves.
Most people who do mow this close to the roadway will not cut toward the street and will stop as a car or motorcycle passes by and a very few will clean the street after cutting their land path.
This is my opinion and what I have witnessed. If anyone has done this I have a question. Is it easier to use riding mower or sling blade?

Rolling Thunder to end annual Memorial Day ride in DC after 2019– Rolling Thunder will no longer hold its annual Memorial Day motorcycle ride through Washington, D.C., after 2019, the group’s founder announced Thursday.
The tradition is ending because of escalating costs and a lack of cooperation from the Pentagon and metropolitan police departments, said Artie Muller, a Vietnam veteran and founder of Rolling Thunder, Inc.
“It has been a hard decision to make,” Muller wrote in a letter that he plans to send to supporters in January. “After much discussion and thought over the last six months, Rolling Thunder National Officers have concluded to end our 32-year annual D.C. Memorial weekend event.”
Rolling Thunder is a nonprofit organization that honors prisoners of war and servicemembers missing in action. Its “Ride for Freedom” through Washington every Memorial Day weekend draws thousands of riders and onlookers.
The ride started in 1988 with about 2,000 riders, Muller said. In 2018, there were more than 500,000.
Costs for the 2018 ride totaled more than $200,000, Muller said. The nonprofit hasn’t been able to recruit a new corporate sponsor, and Rolling Thunder didn’t sell enough merchandise, such as patches, pins and flags.
The money that Rolling Thunder does collect should be going toward the group’s community service branch, which offers financial help to veterans, servicemembers and their families, Muller said.
“We’re collecting money to help veterans, troops and their families, and spending $200,000 on a run? I can’t justify that,” he said.
In addition, working with Pentagon police and the city police department to organize the event has become more difficult, Muller said. Participants this year were prevented from entering certain Pentagon parking lots where they typically convene.
In place of the national event, Muller encouraged the 90 individual chapters of Rolling Thunder to host their own Memorial Day demonstrations starting in 2020.
The announcement Thursday prompted disappointment from some riders and fans of the event, according to Muller.
“I’m not surprised, I knew some would be upset about it,” he said of the calls that he has received. “But sometimes you got to change, and I think we do have to change.”
Joe Chenelly, director of AMVETS, a national veterans organization, said his group has “been working to ensure this does not die.”
“This is too important to our veterans and really to all Americans to simply let it stop,” Chenelly said. “These demonstrations and Rolling Thunder’s unbelievable work over the past 32 years has made a tremendous impact, keeping the search going for our missing and prisoners of war.”

CALIFORNIA GUN NUT REPORT–California: Firearm Excise Tax Bill Fails to Meet Fiscal Deadline While Other Gun Control Bills Move Forward
Last week, the Assembly and Senate Appropriations Committees took up their respective suspense files ahead of the Friday, May 17, fiscal deadline. Some of the more egregious gun bills failed to meet the deadline including the firearm excise tax, vehicle storage and dealer liability insurance bills, while other anti-gun bills continue on. Below find the respective actions of firearm and hunting related measures. The legislation that was passed by the committees will next head to the floor for a vote.
In the Assembly Appropriations Committee:
Assembly Bill 284, sponsored by Assembly Member Jim Frazier (D-11), would permanently place in statute California’s junior hunting license, which is due to sunset in 2020. AB 284 was held under submission.
Assembly Bill 18, sponsored by Assembly Member Marc Levine (D-10), would impose a $25 excise tax on a handgun, semiautomatic rifle or shotgun purchased as new from a retailer. AB 18 also creates the California Violence Intervention and Prevention (CalVIP) Firearm Tax Fund, which the new excise tax will fund and the funds will be administered by the Board of State and Community Corrections, to award competitive grants for the purpose of violence intervention and prevention. AB 18 was held under submission.
Assembly Bill 688, sponsored by Assembly Member Kansen Chu (D-25), would place stringent storage requirements on all firearms that are left in an unattended vehicle, regardless of the duration. The requirements set forth in this legislation are overly burdensome and in some cases unattainable storage options that are neither practical nor possible for the average firearm owner who may temporarily leave their vehicle unattended on their way into the field or to the range. AB 688 was held under submission.
Assembly Bill 1064, sponsored by Assembly Member Al Muratsuchi (D-66), would place further restrictions on licensed firearms dealers including expressly allowing localities to impose requirements beyond state law and imposes an onerous insurance requirement including vicarious liability coverage. AB 1064 was held under submission.
Assembly Bill 879, sponsored by Assembly Member Mike Gipson (D-64), would require precursor firearms parts to be sold/transferred through a licensed precursor parts dealer in a similar process to the new laws regarding ammunition purchases. It would further create a registry of these parts and a new crime for transfer of precursor parts without the involvement of a licensed precursor parts dealer to anyone under 21 years of age or prohibited from owning firearms. Precursor parts include items such as unfinished frames and receivers.

Assembly Bill 1254, sponsored by Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-54) would prohibit the ability to hunt, trap or otherwise take a bobcat except in specified circumstances including depredation permits. Senate Bill 61, sponsored by Senator Anthony Portantino (D-25), would expand California’s one handgun a month law to apply to all firearms. Further, this legislation was amended to prohibit the sale of centerfire semi-automatic rifles to persons under 21 years of age except in narrow circumstances.
Senate Bill 120, sponsored by Senator Henry Stern (D-27), would expand the penalties for violations of California’s transportation laws, including in vehicles or on a person. The penalties include a 10 year prohibition on firearm ownership.
Senate Bill 172, sponsored by Senator Anthony Portantino (D-25), would expand California’s existing storage laws.

BOOZE NEWS–Belgian monks resurrect 220-year-old beer after finding recipe
Grimbergen Abbey brew incorporates methods found in 12th-century books
“We had the books with the old recipes, but nobody could read them.”
It has taken more than 220 years but an order of monks at Grimbergen Abbey, producers of a fabled medieval beer whose brand was adopted by mass producers in the 1950s, have started to brew again after rediscovering the original ingredients and methods in their archives.
In a sign of the significance of the news for beer-loving Belgians, the announcement was made by the abbey’s subprior, Father Karel Stautemas, in the presence of the town’s mayor and 120 journalists and enthusiasts.
Uncasking the first glass, Stautemas said the development was the culmination of four years of research into the methods of monks that brewed beer in the Norbertine monastery before it was burned down by French revolutionaries in 1798. The monastery was later reinstated but the brewery and its recipes were thought to be lost.
Stautemas admitted it might be best not to drink too much of the newly produced beer, which is 10.8% alcohol by volume. “One or two is OK,” said Chris Selleslagh, the mayor of Grimbergen, a town six miles north of Brussels.
The source of inspiration for the new microbrewery, located on the same spot as the original, was the discovery from 12th-century books of details about the original monks’ brewing methods, specifically their use of hops rather than fermented herbs, which put the monks ahead of many of their contemporaries.
The books were saved in the 18th century when the fathers knocked a hole in the library wall and secretly removed them before the abbey was set on fire.
“We had the books with the old recipes, but nobody could read them,” Stautemas said. “It was all in old Latin and old Dutch. So we brought in volunteers. We’ve spent hours leafing through the books and have discovered ingredient lists for beers brewed in previous centuries, the hops used, the types of barrels and bottles, and even a list of the actual beers produced centuries ago.”
Only some elements from the recipe books are being used by the monks. “I don’t think people now would like the taste of the beer made back then,” Stautemas said.
Marc-Antoine Sochon, the newly appointed master brewer for the abbey, said: “In those times, regular beer was a bit tasteless, it was like liquid bread.”
The lack of artificial additives, use of wooden barrels and exploitation of particular local soil – or terroir – is being emulated.
Stautemas, who lives with 11 other monks at the abbey, said: “What we really learned was that the monks then kept on innovating. They changed their recipe every 10 years.”
The new beer is being made in partnership with Carlsberg, which produces the Grimbergen range of beers for sale around the world, and Alken-Maes, which sells it on the Belgian market.
The microbrewery will produce 3m 330ml glasses a year for a largely French and Belgian market.
Asked whether he felt comfortable with the commercial tie-up with big brewers, Stautemas said the royalties from all the Grimbergen beers would allow the monks to live in the monastery, make pilgrimages and help “those who come knocking on our door and need help”.
Grimbergen was founded in 1128 but burned down three times in all, giving it its symbol of a phoenix and the motto ardet nec consumitur– burned but not destroyed.
CONCERN ABOUT WACO COP CONSPIRACY—I’ve always been concerned about the Waco shootings. Was it a cop conspiracy against clubs? After the recent reports with all the charges dropped, I ask Double D, from Motorcycle Profiling Project how he felt? Here’s his response:
No. I don’t believe this is the case. I sat through the trial and have seen much of the discovery. As much as that’s what many would like to believe and hopefully prove, many of the facts don’t support conspiracy to assassinate.
Best evidence against a conspiracy is two-fold. First, Jake Carrizal’s testimony rejects this notion. Jake testified that officer Jackson saved his life on two occasions during the conflict. Jackson killed two Cossacks that were shooting at Jake. This is all on video.
Second, LE would not have logically attempted to shut the event down by asking TO to cancel the event. TP refuses numerous time. LE could do nothing to shut the meeting down because they had a hunch something could happen but no actionable intelligence or evidence. If they had that they could have shut down the event regardless of TP’s permission.
Also, I think that the fact that LE only shot and killed Cossacks (Candyman and Jesus were killed by Cossacks. Video and ballistics show no 223 rounds in either of them and Jesus was killed clearly by Cossacks on video) lends a lot of credibility to Jakes testimony and the video evidence arguing that the Cossacks ambushed the Dallas pack when it arrived.
Finally, it is definitive that there were no under cover LE in the Cossacks. In terms of CI’s, that has never been proven but not 100% disproven either. They must reveal actual LE. Not the case with a CI. They only have to reveal a Ci based on the confrontation clause if they rely on their testimony. Otherwise they can remain anonymous.

President Donald J. Trump invited Democrat leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the White House today to discuss a bipartisan solution to fixing America’s crumbling infrastructure. Congressional Democrats had other plans.

Far-left activists, both inside Congress and out, have made it clear they don’t want Democrats to work with President Trump to help govern. So before coming to the White House this morning, Speaker Pelosi changed her tune. Rather than talk about an opportunity for bipartisan leadership, she played to the party donors and base, lobbing a fresh conspiracy theory: “The President of the United States is engaged in a cover-up.”

Wanted to reach out and share the latest news coming from Indian. Former freestyle motocross legend, turned custom bike builder, Carey Hart got his hands on a 2018 Indian Springfield and created a custom bike that can flash on the road and on the track –The King Killer Indian Motorcycle. Hart brought together a team of professionals and friends to reimagine a modern Indian motorcycle back to its original race track roots.
Built for the One Moto Show in Portland, Hart’s team emphasized the simplistic feel of the old school race bikes. Sporting classic red, white and black race colors and a sleek, slimmed down trim, the King Killer took home the Red, White & Blue award for “Best American Build.”

Savvy riders who come to the Sturgis Rally in the Black Hills of South Dakota in August plan ahead to be at the Flying Piston Benefit Breakfast. This celebrity-strewn Meet & Greet held Sunday, August 4, brings together cutting-edge custom builders and industry influencers to support veterans and provide technical education scholarships.
In 2018, the Breakfast added a special feature: head-turning tiny custom Strider Bikes built by renowned builders that caught industry attention all the way to Mecum Auction in Las Vegas.

In San Francisco a teacher had to take sick leave to deal with breast cancer, but due to the rules she is forced to pay the substitute teacher’s salary.
AN OPEN LETTER FROM THE NRA–
Since the NRA was founded almost 150 years ago, our adversaries have repeatedly tried to take us down. Today is no different. A recent burst of media claims the NRA is vulnerable, financially unstable, and weakened in its fight to defend the Second Amendment. Obviously intent on not letting the facts get in the way of a good story, most reports offer a distorted and inaccurate view of the NRA. As officers and past presidents of the NRA, we write today to set the record straight.
As you may know, we recently convened in Indianapolis for one of the largest NRA conventions in our history. More than 80,000 of our members showed up to gather as one NRA family – to support our Association and celebrate our nation’s constitutional freedoms. During our annual Members Meeting on April 27, some asked for greater insight into three issues: the NRA’s financial affairs, our direction and strategy, and the supervisory role being played by our board of directors. We had an open forum and spirited discussion.
Of course, our discussions were portrayed as a sort of family feud. (Infighting at the NRA – Chaos and Controversy!). At the NRA, we take pride in the fact that our Association is inclusive and invites the active participation of every member. Every member has an opportunity to voice any concern they may have at the Members Meeting. In fact, our greatest privilege is hearing from our members. Like many of you, that’s why we were at the Members Meeting in the first place and spent countless hours on the convention floor.
Fact: During a board of directors meeting on April 29, Wayne LaPierre was elected by acclamation to continue serving as our CEO and Executive Vice President. The board also unanimously elected Carolyn D. Meadows to serve as our new president.
Perhaps looking for a way to counter the narrative about a stronger, more unified NRA, questions have now conveniently surfaced about our financial situation and our standing in the regulatory arena. There also have been frequent attacks on Wayne’s personal character.
Fact: According to the NRA’s chief financial officer, we are on budget in 2019. The NRA is meeting all banking and supplier financial obligations and we continue to aggressively manage our cost structure to offset the orchestrated and calculated attacks against NRA’s finances in 2018. Put another way, our financial house is in order – we aren’t going away.
We have full confidence in the NRA’s accounting practices and commitment to good governance.
Fact: The Association’s financials are audited and its tax filings are verified by one of the most reputable firms in the world. Internally, the Association has a conflict of interest policy and, where appropriate, related-party transactions are reviewed and approved by the board’s Audit Committee.
Simply put, we are well-positioned on the regulatory front and poised to handle all challenges that confront us.
Personal attacks against the NRA’s leaders are nothing new. Recent ones have focused on wardrobe purchases and travel expenses incurred by Wayne. If members hear of an allegation, they can be assured that it has been or will be addressed by the appropriate committees within our board of directors.
Fact: We have committees in place to oversee issues relating to Accounting, Legal Affairs, and Ethics, among others – and every board member is invited to attend these meetings. Please remember that all of us are elected by you – our members. We are not elected by Wayne or anyone on the NRA executive team. We serve as your elected representatives.
Fact: Over the years, Wayne had been advised by the NRA’s advertising professionals to invest in his professional wardrobe due to his numerous public and media appearances. We understand that this was the same agency that facilitated the clothing purchases. What wasn’t as evident in this “disclosure” is that the clothing expenses referenced in media reports dated back to expenses from 15 years ago! To put it in perspective, over this time period, Wayne has participated in thousands of events and hundreds of TV appearances, and personally directed fundraising efforts that total in the hundreds of millions of dollars. In any event, this practice was discontinued some time ago.
Fact: The vast majority of the travel in question involved donor outreach, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement. As an example, The Wall Street Journal reported that a trip to Italy was “tied to a 2015 documentary feature on the Italian gun maker posted on NRATV.” Beretta, as you may know, is a major supporter of the NRA and our Second Amendment.
We are not inclined to further discuss unfounded attacks on our organization, political infighting, or a “weakened” NRA.
However, we will say this: Our adversaries will not divide us and any further discussion about the so-called “demise of the NRA” is only meant to distract us from our mission. This is how it goes when you stand on the bedrock of constitutional freedom – and represent the last line of defense against a campaign to take down the Second Amendment.
While board members may argue, and perhaps even disagree as to tactics, the support Wayne and the current leadership enjoys reflects our assessment of his past and future value to the association as well as our realization that our opponents know they have to take him down if they want to weaken the NRA.
As one NRA member recently said, the true story of the NRA won’t be found in today’s press clippings. It will be written in the history books.
Wayne has been standing shoulder-to-shoulder with all of us for most of his professional life. He has our support. A campaign to oust him failed – as the facts emerged, true motivations became apparent, and we agreed as to who should lead our fight for freedom. We are now moving forward.
Fact: We will confront our opponents, defend our values, and proudly continue our tradition as the greatest civil rights organization in the world.
Just like you, we care about the Second Amendment and our NRA. Just as you do, we know that our fights today are less for us and more for our children and our grandchildren. Just like you, we are all courageous foot soldiers in our fight for freedom. Every single one of us in this fight matters. The Second Amendment is where it is today because of all of OUR efforts. That’s why you matter to our cause and our Association.
We are the NRA. United we stand. And together, we’ll win.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Dennis Quaid and Jamie James, of Quaid & James, will headline the American Veterans Center 15th annual National Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27 along Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C. CLICK HERE to find out how and where to watch.
Dennis Quaid is not only an accomplished actor, but also a singer-songwriter with hundreds of thousands of miles under his belt as a touring musician with Jamie James. James is a legendary guitarist, who was one of the founding members of the popular band, The Kingbees, in the early 80s. Quaid & James, who are also part of Dennis Quaid & The Sharks, specialize in rock ‘n’ roll and country-soul.
Quaid & James will join legendary astronaut and Air Force veteran of the Korean War, Buzz Aldrin, as Grand Marshal of the parade in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Apollo 11 mission, which made him and Neil Armstrong the first two men to set foot on the moon.
The parade will be hosted by Natalie Morales (NBC News) and Kyra Phillips (ABC News) and will be televised on local network affiliates across the U.S. and overseas to our troops on the American Forces Network. It will also be live streamed online at YouTube.com and Military.com. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of Americans will line the National Mall to pay tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for our country, including veterans and active duty military personnel, historical re-enactors, marching bands, musical performers, and celebrity supporters of our troops, such as award-winning actors Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna, and celebrity chef Robert Irvine.
This year’s parade will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, the largest seaborne invasion in history. It will also feature surviving members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, who were the only battalion of African-American women to deploy overseas during World War II.
The National Memorial Day Parade will commence at the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Street, NW. It will proceed west down Constitution Avenue, ending just past The White House and the National World War II Memorial at 17th Street. Participants will pass by the nation’s monuments, memorials, and museums, and will be greeted by hundreds of thousands of spectators waving flags and cheering for our country’s heroes.

I wanted to take my Panhead out for a short ride the other day, but it wasn’t happy. I’ll deal with it this weekend.
Tim brought the GoldWing for Graeme and it’s a giant setting in the center of the shop. The fiberglass guys just arrived at 11:00 a.m. and I’m praying for laying down glass on Saturday.
I’m picking up our new 5-Ball hi-top van tomorrow and already modifying it. You’ll see. It will be a 5-Ball racing kick.
Saturday Don’s hauling his wild Prostreet over here, so Bobby can deal with the registration. It’s super-fast with a Twin Cam top end and Pegasus Fuel Injection. Don couldn’t get a good price for it, so he is donating it to a charity auction for a batch of Nuns. Hang on.
I still need to unload my ’72 Ford 250. It’s cool, but I don’t have the space to keep it, once I take possession of the 5-Ball racing van. Let me know. It runs like a top.
