10 Tricks To Remove That Stuck Bolt

Removing bolts with rounded heads, stripped threads, frozen, or even broken flush with the material like the one shown here, can be a real challenge. Here are ten ways to help remove problem fasteners.

One of the biggest frustrations when disassembling a vehicle for restoration, or even repair, is the dreaded seized or stripped bolt. Stuck hardware occurs when a bolt or nut gets corrosion between the threads and they won’t budge. Many times this leads to breaking the bolt off and having to drill and retap the hold or trying to remove it with a bolt extractor. We won’t even mention what happens when the drill, tap, or extractor breaks off in the same hole.

Below are the top 10 ways our friends at Eastwood have come up with to deal with getting these suckers extracted without wrecking the precious part they are in:

1. Blunt Impact/Force: This is usually our first step when attempting to loosen stubborn bolts. We always use this method before attempting to remove exhaust studs from a cylinder head. There are a few methods to accomplish this. One is to hit on the head of the bolt in the center with a chisel or punch. Another is use an impact wrench/gun and hit it a few brief times in reverse and forward. Either of these methods work on the theory of freeing the corrosion bond between the threads by vibration or impact. It works on lightly seized bolts, but isn’t a 100 percent winner every time. Keep in mind it can be combined with many of the other methods to help make the job easier.

2. Heat: If you paid attention in chemistry class you would have learned that when you heat and cool metal it expands and contracts. The way that we have used this method in the past is to heat the head/body of the bolt until it is almost red hot. By doing this the bolt expands due to the heat, and when it cools it will contract thus breaking the corrosion bond between the threads. A similar method is to heat the area around the bolt to make the hole it is threaded into actually expand and open up a little bit so that the bolt fits a bit looser and can be threaded out. Use of an impact wrench/gun helps when initially breaking it loose since the force from the hammering of the impact wrench breaks the corrosion apart as well. Use penetrants like Kroil or CRC Freeze-Off to aid in the removal process.

The expansion and contraction of the metal from the heating and cooling process can help loosen frozen fasteners.

3. Relief Cuts: This method is our “sure-fire” method for removing most stripped bolts and nuts. It isn’t as clean or civilized as the others, but it is a heck of a lot faster. With this method you will be putting two-three cuts in the bolt head or nut. The goal is to cut just enough that you are almost all the way through the head of the bolt or the nut. Then hit the cuts with a chisel and a hammer a few times, thus splitting the nut or bolt and relieving the tension on them. With nuts you can normally just split it off of the bolt, clean up the threads, and install a new nut. With bolts you can use some locking jaw pliers to grab the bolt head and turn the bolt out. Usually the relief cuts will let the pliers squeeze the head of the bolt enough that it turns out easily.

Relief cuts can often provide the room needed to “free up” a fastener that is frozen by thermal or other types of corrosion.

4. Rock The Bolt: This is another one to try early in the process, and in-conjunction with other methods. Using a ratchet and socket, slowly work the bolt or nut back and forth. Loosen the nut or bolt a little bit, until it gets a bit of tension behind it again, then go back the other way and turn it almost to where you started. Then loosen it a little bit further than last time. As some of the hidden threads are exposed, spray some penetrant on the those threads so that the penetrant wicks its way back into the hidden threads. It can be a slow process, but we’ve gotten some pretty stuck bolts out this way, just by using a little bit of patience.

5. Drill’er out: This is the same concept as the relief cuts with a couple small twists or surprises that can occur along the way. We like to use this one as one of our last ditch efforts. It may be the last resort if the bolt has broken off flush with the surface. Using a small drill bit, drill all the way through the bolt lengthwise. This uses a bit of the other methods too. It heats the bolt by drilling it, and it also makes a hollow portion in the bolt so it can contract more as you attempt to remove it. We’ve had times where just drilling the bolt will allow the frozen bolt to turn out quite easily. Other times you may have to keep stepping up your size of the drill bit until you are just a bit smaller than the diameter of the bolt. At this point you may be able to carefully chisel or break the bolt apart in the hole. Then extract the pieces and clean the threads back up with a tap set or a universal tap tool.

This broken bolt has been drilled through the center and extracted with a pair of locking jaw pliers.

6. Weld’er Up: This is one that can be used if the nut or bolt head is so severely stripped it can’t turn it with locking jaw pliers, or if the head is completely broken off the bolt. Simply take a nut and a bolt of a slightly larger size, and tack weld it to the bolt body. Once you have it tack welded, fill the nut with weld and run a bead around the base of where it meets the bolt body. This allows you to put a socket on the bolt again, as well as puts heat into the bolt that will allow it to expand and contract, breaking some of the corrosion. We prefer to use a MIG welder to do this job as it allows for a little more control than with a stick welder.

Welding a new bolt to the stud or broken bolt can provide a surface for the wrench to grip. The heat from welding the bolt onto the broken fastener can further help by breaking any corrosion bonds between the threads.

7. Air Hammer/Chisel: This combines a few of the methods mentioned, and can be used when the bolt head is stripped. Basically, using an air hammer and chisel on the bolt or nut so that the bolt loosens. We have had it work with moderate success, but it helps if the bolt or nut is an open area.

8. Bolt or screw extractor: There are many styles of extractors, some work well, but many do not. They use hardened bits that grab into the inside of the bolt or nut to remove it. Many of these require you to drill a small hole in the bolt, then thread the extractor in. Whatever you do, DO NOT break the extractor off inside the hole, or you are in for a long, horrible process. These are hardened steel parts and normal drill bits will not work on them. Specialty drill bits are required to drill through the broken extractors.

9. Pipe Wrench: This is a pretty basic way to tackle a stripped bolt, and almost everyone has a pipe wrench kicking around their shop. Tighten the pipe wrench down on the bolt or nut. As you crank on the bolt with the pipe wrench, it actually grabs harder onto the bolt head.

A pipe wrench may help with bolt heads or nuts that have been rounded to the point where a box or open-end wrench will not work.

10. Reinstall Surrounding Nut and Bolts: Sometimes a number of bolts in a area hold a part in place. Occasionally these are meant to be removed in a specific order. Make sure you check your repair manual for any installation/removal order. If no procedure exists, we like to work from the center to the outside. Reinstalling some of the bolts around the stuck bolt may take some of the force off of the stuck bolt and allow you to remove it.

Editor’s note: They completely forgot the first round of removal tools, which include WD-40 and products like Yield. Spray them on, tap gently from time to time, and leave them overnight. Sometimes they work like champs.  If red or green Loctite was used on any fasteners, heat will do the trick.

NEW YORK CLUB HOUSE NEWS–Deliveryman beaten after parking in front of Hells Angels clubhouse

A deliveryman was beaten early Monday when he parked his car in front of motorcycles outside the Hells Angels’ East Village clubhouse, police sources said.

The 22-year-old was dropping off food to a different location on East Third Street between First and Second avenues around 2 a.m. when he stopped his car in front of the motorcycle club, police said.

A stranger in his 60s approached the driver and told him he couldn’t park in front of the hogs, but the deliveryman continued with the drop-off, law enforcement sources said.

When he returned to his car, two other men approached. One held him by the neck while the other sucker-punched him in the face, the sources added.

The victim suffered minor facial injuries but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

The Hells Angels have zealously protected the parking spaces outside their clubhouse.

In December 2016, a prospective Hells Angels member shot a man in the gut after he moved an orange traffic cone that was holding a parking spot outside the clubhouse.

The assault case against Anthony Iovenitti, 52, was dismissed after he died of an aneurysm while on a motorcycle trip in September 2017.

NEW GALLERY IN THE CANTINA–Billy Lane brought his Son’s of Speed show to Sturgis once again in 2018. Using a hand carved dirt tract at the Full Throttle, he and his fellow racers defied death, literally, running these classic motorcycles on a very rough, hardened, dirt track. If they had fallen they would clearly get ripped to shreds.

DIRECT FROM OUR AUSTRALIAN CONNECTION– To clear up any misunderstandings that have already arisen: what I have written is not to be meant in any party-political sense.

They are all drinking from the same “cool aid”. Just some are taking it full strength and undiluted whereas others have watered it down and some others have added there own particular ideological poison to give it a boost. Their differences are reflected in the differing attitudes they take to addressing the “ problem”. My attitude is that this is not the problem needing to be addressed.

The issue is simple. Allowing that there is global warming (I accept there is), and if the CO2 molecule does not and cannot do what is claimed for it, then what is the cause? Is it possible to make significant, cost effective and timely changes to counter it? Are we better to expend our finite resources on amelioration and preparation?

King Canute couldn’t hold back the tide and I don’t believe we can stop gradual, cyclical climate change. We can though be prepared to live with it.

I’m asked if I accept that there is a greenhouse affect and does it contribute to warming? Answer yes. Of the three main greenhouse gases, water, methane and carbon dioxide, CO2 is the least and virtually insignificant.

The challenge I put to all who hold a belief in the “science” of anthropogenic CO2 causing global warming is this: Show me your peer reviewed hard scientific evidence that simply relates to the properties and physics of the CO2 molecule.

Political statements, emotion and computer models don’t qualify as scientific.

Bold, often alarming statements not backed by evidence don’t qualify as scientific proof.

Consensus is not science, and historically the majority can be, and often are, just plain wrong.

Einstein, Copernicus and Galileo held to opinions that were considered heretical in their day.

You don’t need to be a scientist yourself to notice and comment on the lack of scientific papers presented by the proponents of anthropogenic global warming, particularly supporting the case for the part CO2 plays in creating warming. There is none I can find in the public domain.

Because they won’t and can’t proves the whole international climate change movement is a sham built on a lie, and we, the people, need to force the perpetrators to answer for it.

A grass roots insurrection is essential, peaceful, reasoned, objective, decent, orderly and nonjudgmental – based on facts not emotion.

Time is running out. Much damage has already been done. Now is the time to “Wake Up Australia.”

NEWS FROM SCOTT JACOB’S STUDIO IN DEADWOOD–Alexa’s New Release, “Bite Me”

In November 2017, Alexa started her second five-foot by five-foot original painting which has now become my favorite!

Her choice in colors and subject matter are only a fraction of why I love this piece. Its story and her year-long struggle to create it are what had me fall in love with it.

How It Began

As you may remember, Alexa was commissioned to do her own version of Marilyn Monroe in an Andy Warhol style. The owner of the original wanted it to be 5′ x 5′ and the canvas that Alexa purchased for it came in a pack of two.

So here she was with an extra blank canvas the size of half her house.

She knew she needed to use it before a sharp object found it, but what? What could she paint as such a large scale?

2018 SAW A GLOBAL REVOLT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE POLICIES–Cheers! 2018 Saw A Global Revolt Against ‘Climate Change Policies’

2018 saw a global revolt against policies aimed at fighting global warming. Australia, Canada, France and the U.S. have all seen push back against global warming policies.

That included weeks of riots in France against planned carbon tax increases
Despite increasingly apocalyptic warnings from U.N. officials, 2018 has seen a number of high-profile defeats for policies aimed at fighting global warming. Politicians and voters pushed back at attempts to raise energy prices as part of the climate crusade.

It started in June with election of Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Ontario residents overwhelmingly voted Ford’s conservative coalition into power on a platform that included axing the Canadian province’s cap-and-trade program.

Ford said his first priority upon taking office would be to “cancel the Liberal cap-and-trade carbon tax.” Ford then joined a legal challenge led by Saskatchewan against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s policy of a central government-imposed carbon tax on provinces that don’t have their own.

Carbon tax opponents called Trudeau’s plan an attempt to “use the new tax to further redistribute income, which will increase the costs of this tax to the economy.”

Roughly ten thousand miles away in Australia another revolt was brewing. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull saw his power base crumble within days of failing to pass a bill aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford speaks to the press following the First Ministers’ Meeting in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, December 7,

Turnbull’s so-called National Energy Guarantee to reduce energy sector emissions was opposed by a group of conservative members of Parliament led by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Turnbull tried to delay the vote on his climate bill in response to the opposition but was too late. Turnbull stepped down in late August and has since been replaced by Scott Morrison.

Back in the U.S., $45 million was being pumped into the battle over a Washington state carbon tax ballot measure. Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee, who has 2020 presidential ambitions, supported the measure though refiners, but other opponents outspent carbon tax supporters.

The Inslee-backed measure called for taxing carbon dioxide emissions at $15 a ton in 2020, which would increase at $2 a year above the rate of inflation until the state meets its emissions goals. However, Washington voters rejected the carbon tax measure in the November election despite Inslee’s support. It was the second time in two years that Washington voters rejected a carbon tax ballot initiative.

The November elections also saw the defeat of a group of Republican lawmakers in the House Climate Solutions Caucus. Among those defeated was caucus co-chair Florida GOP Rep. Carlos Curbelo, who introduced carbon tax legislation in July.

Curbelo’s legislation called for a $23 per ton carbon tax that would primarily fund the Highway Trust Fund. Despite this, environmentalists funneled money to his Democratic challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.

Shortly after the U.S. elections, it became clear trouble was brewing across the Atlantic in France. French President Emmanuel Macron’s economic reforms, which included planned fuel tax increases, were not winning over much of the population.

Macron spent years styling himself as a staunch supporter of efforts to tackle global warming, including the Paris agreement. Indeed, raising taxes on diesel and gasoline was part of Macron’s plan to meet France’s Paris accord pledge.

It backfired. Angered over the new carbon taxes on fuel, tens of thousands of protesters, called “yellow vests” for the vests drivers are required to have in their cars, took to the streets calling for an end to the taxes and for Macron to resign.

French President Emmanuel Macron attends a joint news conference with President of Burkina Faso Roch Marc Christian Kabore at the Elysee Palace in Paris.

Macron initially resisted, arguing France needed to do more to address global warming, but the French government capitulated in December and scrapped the planned tax increases. Macron also said he’d increase the minimum wage and begged companies to raise salaries, if possible.

Macron’s backpedaling on climate policy couldn’t have come at a worse time for the climate-conscious president. The U.N. annual climate summit was being held in Poland as Macron conceded to the “yellow vests.”

France’s carbon tax revolts sent a clear message to Democratic lawmakers across the Atlantic Ocean. Democrats will take control of the House in 2019 and want to make global warming a central part of their agenda.

Democrats and even environmentalists distanced themselves from carbon taxes in the wake of French riots. However, far-left Democrats are pushing “Green New Deal” legislation, which could become the largest expansion of government in decades.

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPARTMENT AT THE BIKERNET UNIVERSITY–PEOPLE
Judith Curry retires, citing ‘craziness’ of climate science

Judith Curry of the Georgia Institute of Technology speaks during a Senate Commerce subcommittee hearing on “Data or Dogma” in 2015.

Photo by Ken Cendeno, courtesy of Greenpeace.

Judith Curry, one of climate science’s most vocal critics, is leaving academe because of what she calls the poisonous nature of the scientific discussion around human-caused global warming.

Curry, 63, is retiring from her tenured position as a professor at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She’s instead going to focus on growing her private business, Climate Forecast Applications Network, which provides insights into climate and weather risks for agriculture and energy companies.

The climatologist, who distinguished herself in the field decades ago with research into the Arctic and the causes of the climate feedback that have shaped the region, writes a blog called Climate Etc. It is by turns academic and inflammatory.

There she occasionally mocks what she calls “climate alarmists” who say time is almost out unless humanity weans itself off fossil fuels. In her blog and on Twitter, she has also criticized some of the scientists, including Pennsylvania State University climatologist Michael Mann and Harvard University climate historian Naomi Oreskes, who have become leading voices for climate action.

She has testified in front of Congress, boosted by politicians who use her work to argue that environmental regulations and a scaling down of fossil fuel use will be ineffective. Her work is frequently invoked by climate skeptics and denialists. Congressional Democrats, displeased with her conclusions, have investigated the source of her funding.

Curry actually believes, along with the vast majority of climate scientists, that humans are warming the planet, and was even an outspoken advocate of the issue during the George W. Bush years. She was among the first to connect global warming to hurricanes, for example, publishing an influential study in Science in 2006. But where she breaks with the majority opinion is over just how much humans are actually causing global temperatures to rise.

Where many scientists say that humans are the primary cause of warming, Curry believes natural forces play a larger role. She also believes that uncertainty around climate models means we don’t have to act so quickly and that current plans would do little to mitigate warming. She also questions the assertion made by a majority of climate scientists who believe humans have significantly contributed to climate change. In the Obama years, she has become a contrarian of sorts, often criticizing those who rely on climate models to prove that humans are warming the planet at an unprecedented rate.

In announcing her retirement, Curry wrote about what she called her “growing disenchantment with universities, the academic field of climate science and scientists.” She said a deciding factor for leaving the ivory tower was that “I no longer know what to say to students and postdocs regarding how to navigate the CRAZINESS in the field of climate science,” adding that research and funding for it are highly politicized.

In an interview with E&E News, Curry said she would like to see a greater focus on the uncertainties of climate science and a better exploration of them through scientific debate free of politics.

“Once you understand the scientific uncertainties, the present policy path that we’re on doesn’t make a lot of sense,” she said. “We need to open up policy dialogue to a bigger solution space. So I’m just looking to open up the dialogue and to provoke people into thinking…”

THE BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS OPEN–
A priest was driving along and saw nun on the side of the road. He stopped and offered her a lift, which she accepted. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing the habit to open and reveal a leg. The priest looks and nearly has an accident, and after changing gear lets his hand slide up her leg.

She immediately says, “Father, remember Psalm 129”.

The priest says sorry and removes his hand but is unable to remove his eyes from her leg. Further on when he changes gear and has ogled at her leg for the zillionth time he lets the hand slide up the leg again.

The Nun once again says, “Father remember Psalm 129”.

Arriving at the convent the nun gets out and the priest goes on his way. Once he arrives at his church he rushes to the bible and looks up Psalm 129 and it said, “GO FORTH AND SEEK, FURTHER UP YOU WILL FIND GLORY”

INDIAN PERFORMANCE NEWS—from Indian Motorcycle of Libertyville

IPS “Breakthrough Performance Package” for the Thunder Stroke 111

Based some 50 miles north of downtown Chicago, Indian Motorcycle of Libertyville, Illinois, is an authorized Indian Motorcycle dealership with a story to tell.

It all started with trying to eke out that illusive extra few horsepower from the respected, reliable, but perhaps limited Indian Thunder Stroke 111” V-twin as used in stock Big Twins.

Managing Partner/Owner Don O’Shea explains: “Don’t get me wrong, it is a great engine for what it is, but there is more performance hidden away in there, and we set about trying to find it.

“We tried all the conventional approaches, as have most other Indian dealers – we got into tuning and explored all the low hanging fruit such as slip-ons, intakes/air cleaners, and the new cams when Indian released them, but we still weren’t seeing the kind of improvements we were sure we could get – the kind of improvements that would excite and motivate customers.”

Don’s business partner, Todd Gaines, has two and four-wheel experience and takes up the story. “It’s interesting, it seems that with the Scout engine Indian had options it could exploit from the word get-go, and that is a good performance engine that can be massaged.

The newly cast cylinder head has a redesigned chamber and intake port for larger springs and valves

“The 111” Thunder Stroke isn’t a bad engine, not at all, it just appears not to be performance- optimized. It is as if the primary concern was emissions compliance – that and wanting to be as faithful as possible to the iconic 1946/48 era engine’s looks. The way the exhaust has to come out of the cylinder heads for example constrains the design of the head.

“So, our next step was to start working on the heads, but we quickly found that it was going to take more than just porting and larger valves, and any of the other things you would normally look to do to a head. It required some reconstruction.”

The result has been the establishment of a new company called IPS (Indian Performance Solutions) and the complete re-design of an entirely new, repeatable, newly cast cylinder head for the Thunder Stroke 111.

“We redesigned the combustion chamber as well as the intake port with some really good results, but doing so is so labor-intensive and time-consuming that we decided to make the investment and get our design cast, so we would have a repeatable product that we could pull off the shelf and bolt on.

“In every way, shape and form it resembles Indian’s stock 111 head, except for the two key factors of combustion chamber and intake port redesign. We’ve also upgraded the valve springs and are using a cam of our own design.

“Overall, we are reliably getting around a 40 hp increase, with a little bit of variation. The stock 111 is 73 hp/103 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheel, so we are getting around 112 hp and around 125 ft lbs torque, which rolls in at the bottom end with peak torque at around 3,800 rpm.

The contour of the back side of the exhaust valve is different to the one the factory uses

“People fixate on horsepower, but torque is where it’s at; the cam selection puts us in the middle with good numbers on the top without giving up too much on the bottom.”

The upgraded springs and valves come with the heads and are very similar to Chevrolet LS valve springs. The heads are cast on the west coast and machined in Reno. Through Indian Performance Solutions (IPS), which is headquartered near its dealership at Libertyville, Illinois, Don and Todd have relationships with the key suppliers needed for the production and tuning of its new cylinder heads and did the prototype, pilot testing and durability testing there, and worked closely with its suppliers to get the drawings and manufacturing specs drawn up on a supply side management basis, with IPS owning the intellectual property on the designs.

Don continues: “When we redesigned the combustion chamber, the objective was to raise the compression ratio – from 9.5-1 stock to 10.5-1 for our heads with the existing pistons and rings. We also upgraded the exhaust valve – the contour of the back side of the valve is different to the one the factory uses.”

Don says that the plan is, ultimately, to make the package available as a retail kit, with a tuner and map for bolt-on and re-flash install. Initially Don says IPS will focus on sales to other authorized Indian Motorcycle dealerships.

“As a cylinder head package rather than complete top-end kit, it will have a price advantage over some of the other Thunder Stroke 111 performance solutions that are being talked about, but with largely similar horsepower and torque gain results.”

KEEPING THE BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY WIDE OPEN–THE REWARD
Bill Clinton and his driver were cruising along a country road one night when all of a sudden they hit a pig, killing it instantly.

Bill told his driver to go up to the farm house and explain to the owners what happened. About one hour later Bill sees his driver staggering back to the car with a bottle of wine in one hand, a cigar in the other and his clothes all ripped and torn.

“What happened to you?” asked Bill.

“Well, the Farmer gave me the wine, his wife gave me the cigar and his 19-year-old daughter made mad passionate love to me.”

“My God, what did you tell them?” asks Clinton.

The driver replies, “I’m Bill Clinton’s driver, and I just killed the pig.”

WHAT THE HELL DO I DO KNOW—I’ve experienced some wild shit recently. I quit watching commercial television a while back. I’m too busy to watch commercials, the same ones, every five minutes.

I started to watch Amazon and Netflix documentaries and came across Great Courses and some wild shit. Recently I tired of violent movies and bullshit films and just watched more documentaries. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not giving up on movies, but I’ve watched some amazing documentaries recently. Here are a handful of quotes out of “Outter World, Inner World.” I want my Son and grandson to watch this for the amazing photography and the connection between the universe and even the shell of a tortoise.

Here are a handful of quotes from this film:

Humans can act like Bees or Locusts.

In silence is the greatest power.

Circumstances don’t matter, only my state of conscience matter.

You can’t change anything that exists by fighting. You must build a new model and make the old one obsolete.

Electricity follows the easiest path. With stillness (meditation) you can free your spirit.

The signature of the spiral is the link between the inner world and the outter world.

Removing resistance allows the energy to flow and unfold.

Thinks about it, then make goals and plans for this year. We’re burnin’ daylight.

THE MODERN DAY SALEM WITCH (MOM’S SUV) TRIALS

Editor’s Note with the help of Wikipedia: The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. More than 200 people were accused, nineteen of whom were found guilty and executed by hanging.

These episodes have happened numerous times in our history from religious persecution to political upheaval like the McCarthy Era. Ultimately Senator Joseph McCarthy committed suicide.

McCarthyism is the practice in the United States of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. The term refers to U.S. senator Joseph McCarthy (R-Wisconsin) and has its origins in the period in the United States known as the Second Red Scare, lasting from the late 1940s through the 1950s. It was characterized by heightened political repression as well as a campaign spreading fear of Communist influence on American institutions and of espionage by Soviet agents.

The new Joseph McCarthy is Al Gore and who are his witches but you and your mom in her SUV. Check out the following:

Al Gore’s 10 Global Warming Predictions, 12 Years Later — None Happened!

“The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Wake up before it’s too late!”

Soon we “celebrate” the 12th anniversary of former Vice President Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth” revealing the “grave” threat of global warming. On January 26, 2006 the Washington Post stated Al “believes humanity may have only 10 years left to save the planet from turning into a total frying pan.”

My Tennessee neighbor won an Oscar and Nobel Prize for sounding the alarm in book and film as a Climate Control Caped Crusader.

Al crisscrossed countries waving his arms, passionately declaring, “We can’t wait… We have a planetary emergency… the future of human civilization is at stake! … Global warming is the greatest challenge we’ve ever faced!” This is no exaggeration.

In an article highlighting his tireless service for humanity, The Washington Post labeled him “the world’s most renowned crusader on climate change.” Wow! And remember he almost became President of the United States were it not for a few “hanging chads” that didn’t go to his column.

President Obama subsequently picked up the “crisis” telling world leaders that “climate change (not Islamic terrorism or skyrocketing, unsustainable debt) is the number one issue facing us today.”

At the recent Global Paris Summit he pushed this agenda with urgency. The cost of his United Nations Global Warming Treaty came in at $12.1 trillion or $484 billion dollars yearly according to Bloomberg.

Al’s efforts made him an environmental hero but took a tragic toll on his marriage. His marriage of 40 years to Tipper ended in a shocking divorce.

Today, 68 year old Al alternates residence in two gorgeous, spacious homes in Nashville and California. He now has a youthful, wealthy girlfriend.

Al Gore’s Electricity Bill Reveals He Consumes 3,400% More Power Than the Average U.S. Home

Leaving his V. P. office with assets of $2 million, Mr. Gore now has wealth estimated at over $200 million. Al’s movie cost $1million and brought in $50 million.

He hauls in $175,000 speaking fees, is tied to at least fourteen green-tech firms, sits strategically on certain (take a guess) boards, plus benefits from Obama grants and millions in tax breaks. He’s on his way to becoming what one congressional leader called “our first carbon billionaire.”

Here’s the Deal

Masses of people are misinformed or misled on issues like physician-assisted suicide, marijuana legalization, unrestricted abortion, wholesale immigration, socialism, a “war on women”, “free” entitlements, and “pandemic” Wall Street fraud.

Similarly, people are manipulated and deceived regarding dire climate change/global warming reports.

This hysteria and apocalyptic fear mongering reminds many of the 1970 Earth Day predictions that fizzled like a firecracker:

End of civilization in 15-30 years

100-200 million deaths to starvation yearly for 10 years–A new ice age by 2000 according to Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame.

The good news is that many people are wising up! Because of long standing behavior that is suspect to say the least, multitudes view as con artists multimillionaires like Al Gore, Michael Moore, the Clintons and others who prey on the gullible and get rich off causes, advance their fame and live lavish lifestyles off the backs of the unsuspecting.

Hillary told us they were almost broke leaving the White House and this week she’s on Time magazine’s cover saying, “I know what it’s like to be knocked down,” all the while she and her husband have amassed over $120 million in speaking fees alone.

A January YouGov poll of 17 countries found that 91% of Americans are not concerned about global warming. Their number one concern – global terrorism. A recent Fox News poll revealed that today only 3% are concerned about global warming!

Patrick Moore, the legendary, past president of Greenpeace says:

“There is no definitive scientific proof through real-world observation that carbon dioxide is responsible for any of the slight warming of global climate which has occurred during the past 300 years.” He rejects the “science is settled” and “the debate is over.”

Recently even the Supreme Court weighed in with an extraordinary rebuke to President Obama’s attempt to control carbon emissions.

This is not to say that we should be unconcerned or uninvolved regarding legitimate environmental concerns.

Christians are compelled to be good stewards of God’s resources and the earth. We should all make a quality decision to reasonably conserve energy (it’s why we keep our thermostat low in winter/high in summer; turn off the faucet while brushing teeth; etc.).

The Truth About Global Warming: We’re Not Causing It, But We’re PAYING for It

Gore’s Predictions Fall Flat

12 years after Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth” guilt/fear producing predictions, let’s close by examining just how accurate his “science” proved to be on his way to the bank.

1. Rising Sea Levels – inaccurate and misleading. Al was even discovered
purchasing a beachfront mansion!

2. Increased Tornadoes – declining for decades.

3. New Ice Age in Europe – they’ve been spared; it never happened.

4. South Sahara Drying Up – completely untrue.

5. Massive Flooding in China and India – again didn’t happen.

6. Melting Arctic – false – 2015 represents the largest refreezing in years.

7. Polar Bear Extinction – actually they are increasing!

8. Temperature Increases Due to CO2 – no significant rising for over 18 years.

9. Katrina a Foreshadow of the Future – false – past 10 years, no F3 hurricanes; “longest drought ever!”

10. The Earth Would be in a “True Planetary Emergency” Within a Decade Unless Drastic Action Taken to Reduce Greenhouse Gasses – never happened.

Awhile back, the Washington Post stated in an expose’ that, “Al Gore has thrived as a green-tech investor.” Coincidental?

Was it also coincidental that at the recent Climate Summit in Paris, there was a red carpet debut of a dynamic new film “Climate Hustle” just down the street?

This groundbreaking film exposing the junk science of global warming will be seen on Capitol Hill, in theaters, then on DVD soon. Check it out: Climate Hustle.

Another excellent and humorous documentary I’ve enjoyed on this topic is “An Inconsistent Truth” by talk show host Phil Valentine of Nashville. It’s fascinating when Phil goes to Al’s gated home! Check it out on YouTube for a hearty laugh.

Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. told us, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can.”

It’s films like the above and videos like those being seen at Bullseye Challenge (along with the Bullseye book) that are dispelling darkness by truth that’s only inconvenient to those refusing to listen.

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–With five days left in the year, The Weather Channel reported that the United States will finish with the fewest tornado deaths on record, should no tornadoes touch down and create fatalities before January 1.

And should no EF4/5 tornadoes hit the U.S. in the next five days, it would mark the first time that none have hit in a calendar year since that record began in 1950, according to the Washington Post.

Paging Al Gore: Flashback 2013: Gore laments scientists ‘won’t let us’ tie climate change to tornadoes – Former Vice President Al Gore lamented that scientists “won’t let us yet” link tornadoes to climate change. Gore alluded to last month’s devastating twister in Moore, Okla., saying that shoddy historical statistics are preventing a connection between “these record-breaking tornadoes and the climate crisis.”

Electric Motorcycles: The Search for New Markets

Zero Motorcycles have exhibited at the past two IDTechEx events, and typically showcase their sporty S and off-road DS models, as well as their impressive 45kW electric motors (designed from scratch in California and produced at a factory in China). This year, at the IDTechEx Show! in Santa Clara California, things were markedly different. Zero staged two more light electric vehicles: a three-wheeled electric Vanderhall, and a four-wheeled electric go-kart, both using its powertrain. While these are still niche categories (in fact, the gasoline version of the Vanderhall has only been available to buy for the past couple of years), it is a statement from the company that it does not want to be thought of as purely a motorcycle brand. As found in the IDTechEx Research report Electric Two-wheelers 2019 – 2029, it reflects a stagnating motorcycle industry, which has been unable to attract a new younger audience for the past decade.

The gasoline version of the Vanderhall ‘Venice’, the cheapest model, is on sale for just under $30,000 — cheaper than a Harley Davidson touring bike. The electric version would be slightly more expensive, but much cheaper to run.

Energica, an electric superbike maker based in Italy, echoed Zero Motorcycles’ troubles during its conference presentation, showing motorcycle sales data that has flatlined since the economic crisis (see below). Part of issue is down to safety conscious millennials: 5.4 percent of Baby Boomers owned a motorcycle versus 1.6 percent of Millennials, according to presented data. Another issue is the perceived image: ‘In the U.S. motorcycles are not a mode of transportation — they are above all a personal expression’ said Mr Stefano Benatti, CEO. The result: it is harder for electric two-wheelers to break from the image of ‘a dowdy commuter vehicle for environmental fanatics’ which auto startups like Tesla have done so well. However, while the western motorcycle industry as a whole is stagnant, electric motorcycle sales are growing: they are not necessarily viewed as ‘dowdy’ once ridden. Increasing sales further will require fresh strategies like tapping into markets in Asia, or supplying quality powertrains for other light electric vehicles.

Data provided on the IDTechEx Portal. Source: Energica via the Motorcycle Industry Council report 2017

A cautionary tale in the industry has been the story of Alta Motors: an electric motocross bike start-up once based in California. Alta’s strategy was also to look beyond the premium motorcycle segment — it intended to produce low-power e-scooters in high volume, tapping into markets in Asia (India for example sells roughly 20 million motorcycles per year, most < 200cc). However, before things could really take off the company ran out of cash, and production ceased in October 2018. Zero’s strategy is more cautious: trying to open up new markets by becoming a powertrain supplier, without making something new, may be a winning strategy.

Salt Torpedo Chapter 13: Frame and Driveline

We found ourselves lost in the Holidays, but fortunately Kevin Kahl returned from Kansas after a surgery to relieve the pain in his legs. Most of my homework assignments were completed. He didn’t recuperate for a couple of days after the long drive but immediately came to the shop with his compact car packed with tools.

I helped him unload the tube bender, mandrels and a small Harbor Freight TIG welder. We went to work trying to determine whether we needed more rod and we did. I had a TIG welder and a tank full of Argon gas, but we considered another, smaller tank.

He needed to recuperate, so off he went to his swaying boat. Besides all the welding shops were closed on Saturday and H-D dealerships were closed on Mondays. It was a sinister plot to slow us down.

A couple of days passed and Kevin felt up for action. We made runs to True Value Hardware, Matheson Welding, and Phillips Steel the next Friday. They were having their Christmas party. Their boss had told me his Jesse James stories, but I will leave them in the dust of the past. The staff Christmas party wound down and the shop closed at noon. We arrived at 3:00, but a couple of staff members, one who worked there for 23 years, held on and helped us with some tubing chunks we needed. It wasn’t easy but we found them.

We cut away more sections of the Paughco touring frame. I installed the JIMS Fat 5 Transmission, with Custom Cycle Engineering spherical bearings, and dug the JIMS 135-inch Twin Cam out of its crate. It had been locked down for four years. It was time to feel the sun and progress.

Kevin is a confident and experienced frame builder. I was sketchy about cutting too much of the frame away. I didn’t want to lose my foundation before I was confident in the outcome.

I also needed an oil pan and started to scramble. I want to go back to the Evo days when shit was simple. There are even several versions of the oil pan now with the new M-8. The crew at JIMS didn’t know what transmission case I had. It took some digging and I need to learn to look for part numbers. They answer everything. I needed a 99-05 oil pan and Mike O’Brien had one. He also had the 39 mm front-end axle we needed for Frankie’s FXR. I scored and jammed home.

I was also cleaning up shop stuff and thinking about Dr. Hamster’s bobber. I moved the Paughco bars off the 1928 Shovelhead and made studs to hold them on the Panhead bobber project.

Fortunately, I had the parts I needed to replace the Stroker’s Dallas handmade bars on the Shovelhead, but needed a new set of grips.

I immediately looked to Lowbrow on line and found the perfect set. Badda bing! The bobber had Paughco solid brass risers and bars and the Shovel had its bars back.

I had the oil pan I needed and cleaned the shit outta it before installing it. JIMS is now making a high capacity oil tank, but I’m not sure we need it. We will see. With the chain hoist, we installed the JIMS engine in place with a Paughco heavy-duty front motor mount system and plate.

I’m now asking lots of late model questions and working with BDL on a primary drive and clutch system. I also need some parts and an offset sprocket for the transmission.

We need these pieces in place to determine Torpedo body fitment. We are trying like hell to stuff all the elements in the smallest body tank available. So far so good.

One of our first missions was to level the lift, and then level the frame with the driveline in place, and finally level the belly tank bottom. Kevin worked on that, while I worked on shortening the swingarm an inch. We needed more flexibility inside the body. We finally cut the last chunks of the Paughco exhaust pipe out of the body of the belly tank.

We took the front axle and frame plate out and I trimmed it some more, while Kevin started to bend frame members. He also didn’t like the dragster seat pan I bought. It was still too wide and tall. He wanted to build a new one. Kent had narrowed the one I bought, but it could be even narrower.

We looked hard at the seat position and how close we could get to the engine.

In the meantime, Jeremiah constantly complained about his rattling D&D carbon fiber muffler. The aluminum rivets started to fail. He asked for a new muffler but the boss wouldn’t talk to him. He added new and additional rivets, but that only lasted a while. The clamp cracked and he welded it. I suggested we could fix it.

He tried one more time with D&D but the service guy didn’t know anything about Dynas and offered to talk to the boss, but the boss never responded. The service guy admitted that the baffles were popping loose, which added to the muffler failures.

We told him to go to Phillips steel and buy a chunk of 4-inch tubing, thin wall, like 16-gauge and make the muffler solid again. He did and finally tore the muffler apart. The baffle mesh holding the glass packed material was tacked to the tapered sleeve and all the tacks were busted. I told him to shit-can the glass pack material, but he saved every little burnt piece and put it back after I tacked the mesh back into place.

Kevin TIG welded the tube in place and re-welded the clamp, and off Jeremiah went to the store to buy VHS heat paint.

As Christmas approached, Kevin started coming to the shop every other day at noon. He needed to rest and heal. We made wooden guides to hold the body level and I made a frame jig, with his guidance, to hold the frame level. He started to bend tubing.

On Xmas day, Kevin felt up for action. The Redhead and a gang of wharf rats had made cookies and cooked for a couple of days. My son and grandson came over, and I couldn’t find a football game on television, so we were kicking back but itchin’ for action.

Kevin came over and tacked some of his frame rails. We installed the front section, and we felt compelled to see if he could fit inside.

That’s when we ran into measuring issues, but after measuring and re-taping several times, we got close. I hole-saw-drilled the corners and cut the fiberglass with a jigsaw.

What a kick. We made a thick, cardboard seat pieces and I dug out a brand new XRV Harley full-faced helmet. Kevin, who is about 5’10” fit with room to spare.

Next, we will bend roll bars after studying the FIM specs manual, which is sorta vague, but I’m also in constant touch with Denis Manning, the master of streamliners. Hang on to the next report.

HANG ON 2019 IS COMING BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS

Hey,

Hang On another year is screaming at us. I could talk about all the new things flying at Bikernet. We are changing the format some, trying to slow down and hoping for the best. If you’re not a Cantina member please consider joining.

We are also husltling on the Salt Torpedo, our next Bonneville effort. I hope to launch another report tomorrow morning. We may be working on two books next year and still contributing to Cycle Source.

But beyond all our projects, the MRF has a serious list of goals for 2019 to keep motorcycling strong. I always ask that you join a Motorcycle Rights Organization, national or local, just join and support for our future.

The President of the United States has major goals ahead of him. Some folks don’t like him, but I believe he’s working very hard for us. I watched a debate on immigration last night. It was fascinating. Unfortunately our media doesn’t portray the issue like the experts do, so we think there’s something wrong with any immigration effort, but that’s not the case at all. And where our government hasn’t had the balls to step up to this issue, the President does.

Here’s my set of goals for our government and the President. Each one would change our lives substantially for the better, but will anyone step up? Let’s see:

Tort Reform: We need to reduce our sue- happy society. Unfortunately our government is run by attorneys. Probably won’t happen. If it did our wages would increase, jobs would increase and profits would increase.

TSA: The TSA has ruined our travel experience and cost taxpayers billions every year for a bucket full of pocket knives. There are technologies available, which would eliminate this intrusion into our lives. I don’t want all these guys and gals to lose their jobs and I have a plan for a very positive outcome.

And finally, another major effort, that should have been addresses 30 some years ago: Infrastructure for a growing population. We need more and doubled-up roads. They want to blame everything on Global Warming when the earth is cooling and we experience fewer storms. But they don’t want citizens to drive comfortably to work. It’s backwards, but what the hell I’m left-handed. Maybe that’s why I dream of a better country for our hard-working tax paying citizens.

Let’s hit the news and work for a better America, riding free and Bonneville Records.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently the Smoke Out and Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.

NEW BEDROLL COMING TO THE 5-BALL GARAGE–

I received the new prototype and it seems great to me. It’s wide enough and long enough… I didn’t have any problems staying covered and I am an active sleeper. I want to keep the prototype until next week because I have a girl coming here… that can model with it… and I will take pictures. Then I will send it to you for approval.

PETERSEN MUSEUM ACTION–Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School
Armand Hammer Foundation Gallery

Prior to the introduction of Juxtapoz Magazine, artists working within a variety of genres outside of the mainstream tastes of the fine art world were often marginalized by reigning cultural institutions, if not completely ignored. Auto-Didactic highlights the works of a few of these artists with roots in automotive culture. Challenge your perceptions with this compelling display!

FEW HAL ROBINSON’S LEFT—We still have some limited edition prints and T-shirts available. The Easyriders Empire told us we couldn’t sell Hal’s work so we are forced to shut down this effort, but we have some time before I’m shackled and dragged to the Paisano Publication’s dungeon.

Don’t knock on the gate. I may not answer it.

DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THE MOON—It causes global warming and the earth’s spin because of the gravitational pull. Unfortunately every year is spins slightly farther from the earth and the gravitational pull decreases. In a billion years we will quit spinning so fast and start to wobble. We’ll be fucked. But your mom’s SUV or your gas-powered chopper won’t have anything to do with it.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT WITH NEW H-D TECHNOLOGY– Increase visibility at night, in hard weather conditions and even in daylight with the 7 in. Daymaker Adaptive LED Headlamp (P/N 67700426 or 67700427, $849.95*).

The 7-inch Daymaker™ Adaptive LED headlamp combines advanced motorcycle headlight performance with modern styling. The projector-style LED offers superior punch and spread with a pure white light that produces a “Daylight Color Impression” that appears more natural to the user and is conspicuous in traffic. The signature LED light outer ring operates as a position lamp.

The most-advanced headlamp system ever developed for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle utilizes patented sensors and electronics integrated into the headlamp to determine lean angle of the motorcycle and automatically projects additional light into corners to illuminate areas of the road that may be unlit by traditional LED headlamps. Extensive engineering and testing was completed on the lamp to ensure every part of the road in front of the rider is equally lit. The adaptive light feature works in both the high- and low-beam functions.

The night-time beam pattern is focused on the road ahead and is engineered to reduce wasted light that can impact oncoming traffic. The solid-state LEDs are designed for long life and low energy draw, and installation of the shock and vibration-resistant lamp assembly is quick and easy with a plug-in connection to the factory headlamp wiring.

The 7-inch Daymaker Adaptive LED headlamps feature a top-mount low beam, a large bottom-mount projector high beam, two additional D-shaped lenses, an outer signature ring and 12 adaptive lights and is offered in Black or Chrome finish. It fits 2009-later Touring models (except Road Glide), 2012-2016 Switchback™ and 2004-2017 Softail® models with a 7-inch headlamp. DOT and ECE compliant for all markets.

NEW BIKERNET AND BANDIT’S CANTINA PROGRAMS FOR 2019

To keep Bikernet moving forward in the New Year, we’ve shuffled things around a bit. We have decided to shut down all major advertising sales and will move all of Bikernet’s impressive library and 24 years of archived editorial content into Bandit’s Cantina, Bikernet’s subscription-supported section.

We will however keep the Bikernet Blog active daily and accessible for free. All major content will be expanded into the Cantina.

So, from a business side here’s how it will work for the New Year. We will continue to build great content featuring the Weekly News, a variety of features and tech articles.

Our readers can stay abreast of all the action on Bikernet by joining the Cantina for as little as $24 yearly or $39 for two years. They will also receive a special package containing an assortment of Bikernet goodies and bling.

Industry members, if you’d like us to keep supporting your company and promote your products, events or services with editorials, we will do so for a mere $98 a year. Keep sending your press releases and we will take care of them.

For the company that wants to reach all 50,000 Bikernet readers and Bandit’s Cantina subscribers 24/7 (plus a 2 million social media reach) your ad will be placed on our Blog page and your banner will accompany any and all of your company’s content. Just $165 a month. This also means all of your company content is archived on Bikernet for the duration working 24/7 and supported with your banner ad.

All the best for 2019

NEWS FROM 5-BALL RACING LEATHERS—We shipped a 3X Jak Shirt to Gina, for her husband, but it still wasn’t big enough. “Lol, yep…6’4, broad shoulders, long arms, maybe a little gut… finding shoes is even worse! He loves the shirt, the density of the leather, everything about it!” Said Gina.

“BTW, he really appreciated all the extras, he was 14 when a neighbor gave him a stack of early era Easyriders magazines, back in the Spider/Miraculous Mutha days.”

We are going to switch out the 3X for a 4X as soon as we receive the 3X back. No extra charge.–Bandit

NEWS FROM THE FLY OVER STATES HEADQUARTERS–Pride
Lately it’s been posited on the news that nationalism, “a sense of national consciousness” according to Merriam-Webster, is a negative. We differ, with intent.

We think a national consciousness is the very thing America needs now, the very binding agent that brings us together as a nation, as a culture, as a family and as a beacon of freedom to the majority of the people on this planet who live in terror, slavery and political bondage of one form or another.

We have enormous national pride. We are proud of America and what this great nation, our great nation, has achieved, and will achieve in the future. And while we cherish our allies, and as in the past, would be there with everything we’ve got if they ever faced a hostile force, we are also proud and staunch nationalists and we put America first.

We are the FOS.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY GEOLOGY DEPARTMENT LESSON—You know the earth is full of magma under the surface. At the center it’s as hot as the sun. There is always pressure building under the surface and it forms zits or volcanoes on the outter shell. They pop from time to time.

Some 600 million years ago the earth was covered with ice and the seas were frozen. Life was almost completely gone. But ultimately the surface of the earth was saved by the heat of volcanoes and when they popped they emitted mass amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. Without that CO2 life would not exist.

Unfortunately all the SUVs in the world could not even come close to doing that.–Bandit

MORE TRAILBLAZERS NEWS-– JERRY GREER R.I.P.

Jerry Greer passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack on Monday, December 17th. Son, Tom, said he lost his true mentor and a motivator like no other. Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Jerry had a full life. He was schooled in Aeronautical Engineering and Aviation Management, but his life centered on motorcycles. He came to California in the late 1960’s. He freelanced for Cycle News magazine while racing in Adelanto, Huntington Beach and later, Corona.

Jerry raced Flat Track mostly and was frequently on the podium in the lightweight (250) Amateur/Semi-Pro events. He raced, and still won through the mid 1980’s. Jerry restored motorcycles, favoring Maico’s. In 1982, his Maico got a 4th at the Houston TT and a 5th at the Ascot TT.

In the early ‘80s Jerry got interested in Craig Vetter’s motorcycle – mileage contests. He was full of knowledge and humor and shared it with his family, friends and on Facebook. Jerry is racing on the big track in the sky and will be truly missed. Jerry leaves his wife Jan, two sons, Jeff and Thomas, and a large extended family.

Both sons have grandchildren. There will be a private service on Friday and a memorial around the 2nd week in January. Tom will post it on Facebook when they have it set up. The family says thanks to all for your support and kind words.

OLD SCHOOL TT SCRAMBLES RACING SEASON OPENER AND 2018 AWARDS PRESENTATION

SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2019

The bikes have barely cooled off and another season of really fun racing is to begin. They have added another class to the event. It sounds like a blast. It is called “Masters of Momentum”, a vintage 125cc Challenge Series. To quote their flyer, “To make things easy, we’ve broken it down into just two classes: Vintage (1975 and older) and Post Vintage (1976 to 1983), air-cooled and drum brakes bikes only. One of the great things about bikes from this era is that they can be picked up for some reasonable prices, so adding a 125 to your quiver is cheap to do. There’s nothing quite like the starting gate of a 125 race: the smell of bean oil, and the sound of a thousand angry bees.. so come join us and see if YOU are a Master! www.oldschoolscramblesracing.com Takes place at Glen Helen Raceway.

FROM RIDER MAGAZINE–2019 Triumph Street Scrambler Review

By Jenny Smith

The lion’s share of the Street Scrambler’s power bump is in the mid-to-high-end, making highway passes easier and reducing the need to downshift in corners.

(Photos by Kingdom Creative)

Triumph’s 2017 Street Scrambler, powered by the 900cc “high-torque” parallel twin used in the Street Twin, rolled into the gap left by the departure of the previous generation Scrambler two years ago. With less weight, more power and a slightly modernized look, it has proven to be a popular choice in Triumph’s modern classic line, and for 2019 it has received a refresh that includes a bump in mid-range power, a new cartridge-style fork and a Brembo front brake.

As its name suggests, the Street Scrambler is primarily a road-going machine (those looking for more than just light off-roading adventures should give the all-new Scrambler 1200 a hard look), and after riding it and its Street Twin sibling (which received similar changes this year) back-to-back at the press launch in Portugal, the Street Scrambler’s upright, commanding riding position proved to be well-suited to navigating the urban jungle.

For 2019, the Street Scrambler gets more power, better suspension and brakes, new ride modes and a light style refresh.

ALWAYS HAPPENING—I’m a lucky mofo, always have been. Twice I left Easyriders. The first time was over drugs. My boss Lou Kimzey was a great guy and my mentor, but he was slipping down a bad path and it was time to check out for awhile and try something new. It was the only time in my life I backed away from motorcycles for five years.

I came back in ’87 to a new biker world and rocked with it until ’99, when I was the executive VP and responsible for 14 titles, videos, you name it. The company went public and I decided to step away and semi-retire.

I have never been a big money-maker, but I love to accomplish stuff and I’ve been very lucky to always be able to do so. This year was packed with accomplishments and I dig it, from making a steel sculpture for a Sturgis Charity effort to the mural on the side of the building.  I need two quiet weeks for finish a screenplay and with the help of another Hamster, I’m working on a bronze sculpture for another charity effort. Hell, I built another bike, the amazing Panhead bobber, which I might sell to help support our Bonneville effort.

Maybe I should write another life and times of Bandit. I’m thinking about the new year and what we can do to rock our year from start to finish.

And remember two things. Ride Free Forever, and everything will be all right in the end. If it’s not all right, it’s not the end.
