PUNISHMENT BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for September 6, 2018
By Bandit | | General Posts
Hey,
My granddaughter called me about leasing cars. I’ve leased two, along time ago. I started to tell her my thoughts and she said, “I thought you were going to tell me some horror story.”
I said, “Never, always find the positive in everything you do.” That’s the code and don’t forget it.
On the other hand, several years ago I noticed, a trend toward punishment in our society. That’s also against the code. For instance single-lane streets to punish car drivers and glorify bicycle lanes doesn’t work. It just jams up the cars causing more pollution, stress, anxiety and accidents. When I was a kid I rode bicycles everywhere. I didn’t need or want a lane. Then they passed a law against bicycles on sidewalks. Makes no sense.
We need to celebrate our brothers and sisters, not punish them for driving cars or motorcycles. In the meantime ride free, forever. You’re not killing the planet, your feeding the plants. When they figure that out, the control freaks are going to look very bad.
The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently the Smoke Out and Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.
SEATTLE PASSES ENGINE SOUND RESTRICTIONS—ALKI BEACH affected.
The Seattle City Council updated its community noise ordinance, giving police the authority to crack down on excessive sound near Alki Beach, where homeowners complained about loud engine noise, blaring stereos and screeching tires, according to a report by www.kings.com.
Police may now issue citations for muffler and engine sound that “can be clearly heard by a person of normal hearing at a distance of 75 feet or more from the vehicle.”
NEWS FROM THE SCOTT JACOBS FAMILY–
Well, I must say that I’m happy I made the drive with Alexa to Milwaukee for the 115th! It was over four years since I last visited the city and five years since the 110th Rally.
The turnout for the event was great; the crowds were large and the people were friendly. It’s estimated that over 150,000 bikers came from around the world came to celebrate Freedom with us at the Harley-Davidson Museum.
It took us four hours to set up the booth because it was so large.
We were set up inside the Chrome Tent next door to the Museum, which was a PRIME location. The tent was slammed with people from open to close. Our booth was over 40′ X 15′ and we proudly hung Scott’s four new 115th Anniversary Original Paintings for everyone to view and order from.
The overall response was positive and many people added one of all to their collection to remember this monumental time in Harley’s History.
MY INPUT
Scott’s Anniversary paintings are the perfect memento to remember the trip to the 115th.
We know we all enjoyed a little too much booze during the Rally, so what better subject to collect than wine and spirits?
OTHER NEWS
While Alexa, Scott, Ron, and I were at the Milwaukee Rally, our wonderful employee Tate made a pit stop in between Milwaukee and Davenport, Iowa to have flat track racer, Bill Tuman sign the “Wheels Through Time” edition!
Due to his poor health, we were only able to get 30 of the 51 signed. That means the first 30 collectors will get theirs signed by both Bill Tuman and Jared Mees!
We are down to 8 of these!
REMINDER
We have until September 30th, 2018 to collect until they are officially sold out! After the 30th, we will close the editions and the only way to get one in the future will be finding a private buyer that’s willing to part with theirs.

NEWS FROM VINTAGE RIDES–It’s been nearly 12 years since you started the Vintage Rides journey.
What do you see in the rearview mirror?
I’m really happy with how far we’ve come. The adventure began in 2005, when I was
19 years old and a student in New Delhi. That’s where I learned to ride a motorcycle, bought my first Enfield and drove across the country. It will remain one of the most stunning trips of my life, full of unexpected experiences. I didn’t have enough money
to afford the trip, so I slept one night in a slum, and another time on my bike near
the highway, in the middle of trucks! These are the memories that lead to
the most incredible encounters.
I wanted to share this approach to travel and our team of adventure enthusiasts
is now 40 strong.
I also see the Vintage Rides community that we created over the past 12 years. You are more than 1,200 to ride with us each year, to share this old-school riding approach, in search of the most beautiful landscapes and memorable experiences. Thank you!
What’s your dream bike?
I don’t have a dream bike per se. That being said – and this will come as no surprise –
I am very fond of the Royal Enfield Bullet Cast Iron Engine, right side gear shift.
They have the looks and the personality, the ideal combo for travelling: quiet, charming and, of course, sturdy!
What is your definition of travel?
For me, what makes a journey are the encounters and the unexpected. That’s why I try to steer clear of the tourism highways. And the magic happens when you travel on modest and likable motorcycles because it guarantees authentic and spontaneous contact with the people you meet. For me, travelling is also about exploring so I love to change routes, for the sake of the ride and the beauty of the landscapes. Sometimes you get a few surprises, but that’s what adventure is all about!
Can you share an anecdote from one of your motorcycle trips?
There are so many…. The last memory that comes to mind was during the Frozen Ride with Jean, Baptiste, Sylvain, and Thomas. We decided to cross the frozen Khövsgöl Lake during the winter with side cars. After a first asphalted but freezing phase, we hit the ice. And believe me, it’s pretty special. It’s a complete change of scenery. I had a feeling of light vertigo for a few hours, before getting used to it…. Oh, and avoiding crashing
into Sylvain by an inch, after a hell of a slide!

THE LAST MOTORCYCLE ON EARTH FROM INDIEGOGO.COM–
Motorcycles are outlawed. Gasoline is $20 per gallon. Self-driving cars are taking over. Silicon Valley and the United States Government have collaborated to push society toward a fully-autonomous transportation system. Motorcycles and riders are an easy first target in the drive to ban human-operated vehicles. Impossible, you say? Not so fast.

The EUROPEAN SHOW highlight of the motorcycling year: INTERMOT 2018
A host of world premieres and powerful presentations in Cologne
It’s the highlight of the year for motorcycle and scooter fans from all over the world: INTERMOT, the International Motorcycle, Scooter and E-Bike Fair, from 3 to 7 October 2018. Over 1,000 exhibiting companies and brands from around 40 countries, including all the big names, will present their latest models and product innovations to the international trade audience and the biker community.
In addition to motorcycles and scooters, the product range on offer at INTERMOT also encompasses accessories, clothing, parts, customizing, travel and workshop equipment. INTERMOT is organised by Koelnmesse GmbH, and the conceptual sponsor of the event is the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), based in Essen, Germany.
INTERMOT will occupy Halls 6-10 of the Cologne fair grounds with a total gross exhibition space of around 100,000 square metres. The tried-and-tested concept of distributing the market leaders across all halls will be continued in order to ensure a steady visitor flow.
Among others, BMW Motorrad, Harley Davidson, Honda, Ducati, Kawasaki, KTM, Kymco, the Piaggio Group with the Aprilia, Moto Guzzi and Vespa brands, as well as Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha will be on the starting grid in Cologne. In addition to these, brands like Indian, which has once again expanded considerably, Royal Enfield and Horex will also attend with their own presentations.
Benelli can also be seen again in Cologne. In addition, new brands in the electric mobility segment, such as Energica and Zero with their e-motorcycles or emco and Kumpan with their e-motor scooter ranges, will provide fresh momentum in Cologne. In the clothing section, the return of the well-known Italian manufacturer Dainese, which is also bringing the renowned helmet brand AGV with it to Cologne, is especially worth mentioning.
Almost 65 per cent of the more than 1,000 exhibiting companies and brands come from abroad. The countries most strongly represented at INTERMOT are Italy, the USA, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Pakistan, Spain, China and Taiwan. Alongside the individual appearances, groups of exhibitors are also taking part from China, Great Britain, Italy, Pakistan, Taiwan and the USA.
Renowned distributors such as Custom Chrome Europe, Louis, Motorcycle Storehouse and the parts specialist Zodiac will be represented in Cologne as well. The starting grid will of course also feature internationally renowned customizers, for example: Berham Customs, Harley Factory, JvB, Fred Kodlin, Mellows, No Limit Custom, Walzwerk, Wrenchmonkees and not forgetting the Sultans of Sprint, an alliance between customizers and sprint racers. In keeping with the setting, numerous suppliers will of course also be showcasing accessories to suit the scene – from clothing and helmets to custom-made parts and exhaust systems.
In the Garage Area of INTERMOT customized, the pros will show off the work that goes into creating custom bikes. Tasks like changing the footrests, handlebars, headlights and indicators will be as expertly explained and performed as shaping and fitting a fuel tank. The area even includes a mobile spray booth.
At this year’s event customizing enthusiasts and keen mechanics will be able to follow two projects from the design stage right through to the finished bike. A brand new Ducati Scrambler 1100 will be completely redesigned and customized over the course of the five days of the fair. Niels Peter Jensen, the ProSieben Maxx TV channel presenter of shows such as “Extreme!” and “Man Made”, and himself a keen customizer, will be attending and discussing the conversion process in the Garage Area Lounge.
Under the banner “Turning scrap metal into gold”, INTERMOT customized is looking for a conceptual idea from the motorcycling community, wherein a given motorcycle (Honda CB 450S) is customized using parts from LSL and Highsider and with a maximum budget of Euro 750.00. The winning idea will be implemented by the winners, with the support of the experts in the Garage Area, and completed by the end of INTERMOT 2018.
Also taking place this year as a highlight of INTERMOT customized will be the AMD Championship of Custom Bike Building, an event that stops off in Cologne every two years. It is here that the “who’s who” of customizers will be putting themselves before an international jury with their spectacular conversions.
The world title is traditionally awarded in the FreeStyle Class – all modifications are accepted here. Alongside this, customizing specialists will be showcasing their impressive creativity in the four other categories Retro/Modified, Modified Harley-Davidson, Performance and Café Racer.
Ladies@intermot – a programme specially tailored to female bikers: female motorcycling enthusiasts will meet in Hall 7, from where tours of the fair centred on bikes and clothing for women will depart. In addition, the programme includes clubs, associations and interest groups as well as events and information to do with touring, safety, technology and sport, geared specially for women.
INTERMOT Cologne will be open to the general public each day from 3 to 7 October 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Second session was the black n Grey shading to bring it to life so far we are 8-9 hours in.

QUICK, ANOTHER BIKERNET READER COMMENT–I DON’T GET IT BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for August 30, 2018

I just turned 72, been riding 55 years, had accidents, been injured, volunteered for Vietnam, spent 2 years, and yes I spent time with the medics. All I am saying is we make choices, sometimes they don’t work out how we planned. I have the scars to prove it.
Am I going to stop riding or doing things i shouldn’t do? I don’t want to my last moments wishing i had gone for it. This is not a no-fault life as much as the lawyers and liberals would like it to be. I will take my lumps, get up dust myself off and figure I have learned something.

LIQUI MOLY NEWS–Chemistry from Germany for muscle cars.
LIQUI MOLY works together with Prefix Corporation. The German oil and additive specialist LIQUI MOLY and racing engine manufacturer and tuning specialist Prefix Corporation have agreed to a technical partnership. “With it we can show that our products not only deliver top performance in import vehicles from Europe, but also in racing and American muscle cars,” says Sebastian Zelger, responsible for US business at LIQUI MOLY.
The cooperation with the engine and performance division of Prefix also means that LIQUI MOLY can test its lubricants, greases and additives under extreme conditions. The contact was made via Stevens-Miller Racing. The racing team uses LIQUI MOLY and has had very good experiences with it in Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros and Dodge Challengers which all have Prefix engines.
“Someone who buys an engine from us expects uncompromising peak performance,” says Jhan Dolphin, director of sales and marketing at Prefix Corporation. “Therefore every individual component must be able to generate peak performance. And this is definitely the case with the products by LIQUI MOLY.”
In the USA, LIQUI MOLY’s main business is the European vehicles segment. “But cars by domestic brands can also benefit from the performance of our oils and additives,” says Sebastian Zelger. “We are able to prove this at a very high level with Prefix.”

STAND YOUR GROUND IN FLORIDA–Decide to Live or Die
Not all Florida sheriffs are opposed to the state’s stand your ground law or the concept of citizens defending themselves through force of arms. In a press conference yesterday, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd gave a detailed explanation of what happened in a recent self-defense shooting by an Uber driver near Winter Haven, Florida.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=xXAv9BO2VQQ
An Uber driver, Robert Westlake, had picked up a fare at a bar in the early morning hours of August 28. A young woman, Jessica, had helped the inebriated woman get into the car.
Somehow Jessica’s estranged boyfriend thought she was the passenger in the Uber car. He threatened via text messages to beat up the driver. The ex-boyfriend, Jason Boek, drove up behind the Uber, then forced it to the side of the road. Boek got out of his truck, approached the driver, and threatened to shoot him while pulling his cell phone from his pocket and pointing it at the driver.
What Boek didn’t know was that the driver, Westlake, has a Florida concealed carry permit and had just finished a stint at the local police academy.
Westlake shot Boek once in the chest. He died at the scene as Westlake administered CPR. Westlake had a dashcam in the car that recorded the event (starts at the 9:10 mark above).
“This is justifiable homicide all day long,” Sheriff Judd said. “You have the right to protect yourself. This is a classic stand your ground case. A classic, and this was the intent of the law.”
“But you see how rapidly you have to make a decision of whether you live or whether you die. And I can tell you unequivocally the Uber driver, Robert, did exactly the right thing to protect himself and ostensibly his passenger as well.”

LOS ANGELES SHOULD EMBRACE SMART MOBILITY POLICIES–By Joe Buscaino, Los Angeles Daily News
The recent dockless electric scooter and bike revolution created a solution many civic leaders were looking for: a multi-modal, efficient, affordable and emissions-free transportation option that is available to everyone and solves the problem of getting people to and from the first and last mile of their journeys to public transportation.
However, as soon as Angelenos started using this new mode of transportation, everyone panicked.
Most of those concerned cited safety as their primary issue with dockless scooters- they disrupt traffic when ridden in traffic lanes, cause conflict when taken on the sidewalk by scofflaw riders, and cause accessibility issues when parked in all kinds of inappropriate places.
I understand these sentiments because I see all the same issues on our streets and sidewalks — with cars. Cars clog our streets every day in traffic jams, which are only made worse when collisions occur. I see cars parked on the sidewalk and on front lawns all the time.
The worst part about cars is the manner in which people are severely injured or even killed due to vehicle collisions. This isn’t some abstract problem — we have good hard evidence that children in America are twice as likely to die in traffic collisions relative to other affluent nations. Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for children ages 2-14 in Los Angeles.
So while I get the concern for safety on scooters, it strikes me as misplaced to blame the scooters rather than the 4,000-pound steel machines that are actually hurting people.
I fully support dockless technology and have been begging companies like Lime to bring their electric scooters to my district. My office launched the first pilot program in the city with Lime last November and it has been very successful. There was minimal negative feedback from our community members and over 5,000 active riders in the first month of its debut.
We need to reduce traffic congestion not by building more traffic lanes, but by reducing car trips and that means creating multi-modal options that make public transportation available to more of our population.
There will always be the need to adjust and tweak regulations over time for innovations like this, and for Los Angeles’ part, we are nearing the end of the process to enact dockless regulations. The City Council will soon vote on temporary rules as a placeholder until the DOT develops the permanent rules. These regulations would allow companies to put up to 10,500 bikes or scooters in the city, and potentially increase that number based on utilization and performance. Regulations are the smart approach to spurring the great potential this service has to offer.
The Public Works Committee and the Transportation Committee spent a lot of time debating safety regulations like the top speed of scooters and whether or not helmets should be required, but we failed to have a conversation about building a transportation infrastructure needed to truly create a safe space where e-scooters and e-bikes can operate.
All cities must start developing the criteria to build networks of protected bike lanes where electric scooters and bikes can coexist without having to brave the dangerous streets ruled by cars or get in the way of pedestrians.
Sevilla, Spain recently built a 50-mile network of protected bike lanes at a cost of about $50 million, attracting 70,000 daily users. By comparison, the 15-mile Expo Line from Downtown to Santa Monica cost $1.5 billion and boards 64,000 passengers daily.
I have recently proposed a protected bike lane loop in Wilmington, home to the highest concentration of bike lanes in California. However, even with regular bike lanes, it’s very scary and dangerous to ride a bike or a scooter in an industrial area alongside 18-wheeler trucks with only paint as a barrier.
I feel confident that my council colleagues and I will make the right considerations when developing the rules for riding and parking dockless electric scooters in the same way rules have been created for dockless cars — scooters and bikes should not be more difficult.
Ford sold over 15 million cars between 1908 and 1927, however, parking regulations didn’t begin until 1935 with the installation of the first parking meters and issuing of the first parking tickets. Dockless scooters will have been in use less than 18-months before regulations go into effect on January 1, 2019.
At our heart, all of us who live, work, and raise families in Los Angeles are seeking the best quality of life for our community. My colleagues in local government here in Los Angeles and across the nation would be wise to follow our lead once again by embracing smart mobility policies that connect communities and create opportunities.
My grandson was at an intersection in Venice this week and watched one of the scooter riders get mowed down. Interesting. –Bandit
HARLEY-DAVIDSON CREATES NEW ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
R&D FACILITY IN SILICON VALLEY
Company is Recruiting Top EV Talent to Build its Capabilities for New Products and Segments
Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) announced today it will establish a new research and development facility in Northern California to support its future product portfolio, including the company’s first complete line of electric vehicles.
“Recently we shared with the world our accelerated plans to build the next generation of Harley-Davidson riders globally,” said Matt Levatich, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson, Inc. “This new R&D facility in the heart of Silicon Valley will help us deliver on those plans and demonstrate our commitment to lead the electrification of the sport.”
In July, Harley-Davidson shared details of its “More Roads to Harley-Davidson” growth plan. Through this accelerated plan, the company is expanding the Harley-Davidson community through new products, broader access and stronger dealers.
As part of that strategy, Harley-Davidson will launch its first electric motorcycle, LiveWire™, in 2019. That motorcycle will be the first in a broad, no-clutch “twist and go” portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed by the company. It will be followed by additional models through 2022 to broaden the portfolio with lighter, smaller and even more accessible product options to inspire new riders with new ways to ride.
The new facility in California, which will serve as a satellite of the Willie G. Davidson Product Development Facility in Wauwatosa, Wis., is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2018. It will initially focus on electric vehicle research and development, including battery, power electronics and e-machine design, development and advanced manufacturing.
Long term, the company may consider expanding the center’s focus to an increased range of advanced technologies that uniquely leverage the rich talent in the Silicon Valley and support its most comprehensive and competitive lineup of motorcycles across a broad spectrum of price points, power sources and riding styles.
The company has already begun recruiting top talent in electrical, mechanical and software engineering, with experience in developing and delivering a wide variety of EV systems from design through production. The facility will initially employ a staff of approximately 25, most of which the company intends to hire from within the Silicon Valley area.
“This is an exciting time in Harley-Davidson’s incredible history, and it’s also an exciting time to join our company and help shape our future,” said Levatich.

Bitcoin Maven Sentenced to One Year in Federal Prison–
LOS ANGELES,—The so-called “Bitcoin Maven,” who admitted to operating an unlicensed bitcoin-for-cash exchange business and laundering bitcoin that was represented to be proceeds of narcotics activity, was sentenced today to 12 months and one day in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $20,000.
The so-called “Bitcoin Maven,” Theresa Lynn Tetley, 50, of Southern California, a former stockbroker and real estate investor, was sentenced by United States District Judge Manuel L. Real for conducting an illegal business and engaging in unlawful monetary transactions involving bitcoins. Tetley was also ordered to forfeit 40 Bitcoin, $292,264.00 in cash, and 25 assorted gold bars that were the proceeds of her illegal activity.
Tetley pleaded guilty to one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and one count of money laundering.
The government’s case against Tetley is the first of this kind charged in the Central District of California. According to court documents, Tetley offered bitcoin-for-cash exchange services without registering as a money services business with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), and without implementing anti money-laundering mechanisms such as customer due diligence and reporting certain transactions required for these types of businesses.
Tetley advertised on localbitcoins.com and exchanged, in total, between $6 and $9.5 million for customers across the country, charging rates higher than institutions that were registered with FinCEN.
As a result of operating this unregistered business, Tetley facilitated laundering for one individual who is suspected of receiving bitcoin from unlawful activity, such as sales of drugs on the dark web. In the course of her business, Tetley also conducted an exchange of bitcoin-for-cash for an undercover agent who represented that his bitcoin were the proceeds of narcotics trafficking.
According to sentencing documents, the government argued that “[i]n light of the growth of the dark web and the use of digital currency, unlicensed exchangers provide an avenue of laundering for those who use digital currency for illicit purposes.” The government asserted that Tetley’s business “fueled a black-market financial system” that “purposely and deliberately existed outside of the regulated bank industry.”
The investigation into Tetley was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and IRS Criminal Investigation.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Puneet V. Kakkar of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Section.

KEEPING THE BIKERNET BAD BLONDE JOKE WING OPEN FOR LUNCH–As a trucker stops for a red light, a blonde catches up.. She jumps out
of her car, runs up to his truck, and knocks on the door.
The trucker lowers the window, and she says “Hi, my name is Heather and
you are losing some of your load.
The trucker ignores her and proceeds down the street.
When the truck stops for another red light, the girl
catches up again. She jumps out of her car, runs up and knocks on the door.
Again, the trucker lowers the window. As if they’ve never spoken, the
blonde says brightly, “Hi my name is Heather, and you are losing some of
your load!
Shaking his head, the trucker ignores her again and continues down the
street.
At the third red light, the same thing happens again. All out of breath,
the blonde gets out of her car, runs up, knocks on the truck door. The
trucker rolls down the window. Again she says “Hi, my name is Heather,
and you are losing some of your load!
When the light turns green the trucker revs up and races to the next light.
When he stops this time, he hurriedly gets out of the truck, and runs
back to the blonde. He knocks on her window, and after she lowers it, he
says…
“Hi, my name is Mark, it’s winter in Minnesota and I’m driving the

VA REPORT–Bedsores, neglect abound at worst VA nursing homes
BEDFORD, Mass. – The nurse’s aide was busy getting a patient ready for bed when she noticed a commotion behind a privacy curtain on the other side of the room. She heard Russ Bonanno, a 94year-old veteran, shout, “Ow, ow, ow.”
“It sounded like fighting,” said Julee, who asked that her last name not be used out of fear of retaliation. When she went to check what was happening, she saw another aide trying to hoist Bonanno from his wheelchair to his bed, normally a two-person job.
Julee said she watched the other aide simply toss the elderly dementia patient onto the bed.
“Let me tell you how brutal that guy was with the veteran,” Julee wrote to her supervisor two days after the alleged incident May 18. “After he was done, (we) went and checked Mr. Bonanno. The guy was wet. Everything
needed to be changed.”
The aide accused of roughly handling Bonanno quietly resigned, but Julee, the aide who blew the whistle, was fired two weeks later. She said her supervisor told her she had attendance problems.
Welcome to one of the lowest-rated nursing homes for veterans in the nation run by the U.S. Department of Vet-The erans Affairs. The facility, at the VA hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts, is among 11 nationwide to earn the lowestpossible one-star rating from the agency based on both overall quality and the results of surprise inspections. The ratings are on a scale of one to five, with one being the lowest.
The others are scattered from Lyons, New Jersey, to Prescott, Arizona, and from Dayton and Chillicothe, Ohio, to Tampa.
Concerning conditions
Bedford’s rating reflected an array of problems with care provided to the more than 200 veterans who live there, including bedsores, high rates of medication and decline of veterans’ health, according to statistics outlined in documents obtained by USA TODAY and The Boston Globe, which have jointly investigated VA nursing homes.
The poor grade for surprise inspections in part reflected the staff’s handson treatment of residents. In 2017, inspectors from the Long Term Care Institute found several instances of neglect, including a veteran lying naked in bed covered by a urine- and feces-stained sheet. Their report cited another veteran who struggled to shove food into his mouth with his hands after trying unsuccessfully to use a spoon. Staffers were nearby.
The report came against the backdrop of another resident who died in his bed in July 2016 while the nurse’s aide who was supposed to check on him played video games on her computer. The aide, who has since resigned, was supposed to check on Bill Nutter hourly because he had a condition that could cause his heart to stop without warning.
Joan Clifford, the Bedford VA hospital director who also oversees the nursing home, defended the quality of care there and said the team always strives to improve it.
“On my first day there, I walked all the units, and I was struck at how well cared for the nursing home patients were,” she said.
Clifford said Julee was fired for reasons she could not discuss and not for her reporting of the alleged abuse of Bonanno. She acknowledged that the aide accused of poor care was allowed to resign. If he hadn’t, she said, disciplinary “action would have been taken.”
Clifford said the one-star quality rating the facility received from the VA didn’t take into account the complexity of the patient population, which includes many patients with dementia or psychiatric problems.
“There have been improvements, and we’re expecting a better score next time,” she said.
‘Dandruff and heavy stains’
Her reassurances mean little to the family of Charles Amidon, a highly decorated veteran who once served as medical adviser to the South Vietnamese army. For four years, the retired lieutenant colonel has lived in Bedford VA’s Building 4, where Nutter died.
“We have experiences with civilian hospitals,” Amidon’s son Christopher said, noting that his father had stayed at a private, long-term care facility. “You see the level of care. It was like night and day. … (In Bedford,) I noticed patients in wheelchairs sitting in the hallway who hadn’t been bathed. They had dandruff and heavy stains.”
Clifford said she couldn’t discuss any individual veteran’s care because neither the patient nor the family members signed necessary releases.

BONNEVILLE NEWS–Urge Congress to support Bonneville Salt Flats restoration
Restoring racing surface takes federal dollars and your letter of support!
Another AMA Land Speed Grand Championship, also known as the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, just wrapped up on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. First-timers experienced the spectacle and thrill of the event. Veterans returned for another try, and records were broken. While the excitement continues, nearly everyone in the motorcycle racing world is aware that the salt flats are not what they used to be. And corrections must be made soon.
The thickness of the salt crust has been declining since the 1960s, when the U.S. Bureau of Land Management issued mining leases that allowed brine to be removed for potash extraction. The leases did not require the salt byproduct be pumped back onto the flats. The international race course-once 13 miles-has been reduced to no more than 8, threatening Bonneville’s status in the world land speed competition.
A test program by the BLM and the mining company demonstrated that pumping 1.5 million to 2 million tons of brine onto the flats annually could significantly improve the salt thickness and racing surface. Increasing the present rate of 400,000 to 600,000 tons per year to 1.5 million tons or more would require extensive pumping infrastructure improvements. And the funding for those improvements requires Congressional support.
We’ve made it easy for you to make your congressional representatives aware of the problem and become part of the solution. Take Action and complete the contact information form offered. By doing so, your name will be added to our prewritten letter, urging each of your federal elected officials to support the funding needed to increase the brine being returned to the flats. You can, in fact should, read the letter before you hit “Send.”
Thank you in advance for contacting your members of Congress on this important issue. Please forward this alert to your friends and ask them to comment as soon as possible, as well.
Now more than ever, it is crucial that you and your riding friends become members of the AMA to help protect our riding freedoms. More members mean more clout against the opponents of motorcycling. That support will help fight for your rights-on the road, trail and racetrack and in the halls of government.
Join the AMA at americanmotorcyclist.com.
If you are an AMA member, encourage your friends to join by telling them about the many AMA benefits you appreciate and the role the AMA plays in promoting the motorcycle lifestyle and protecting the future of motorcycling.

HIGH SCHOOLS IN CALIFORNIA SHUT DOWN TECHNICAL TRAINING FOR DANCING LESSONS–
It is Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, Ca. and administered by the Las Virgenes Independent School District. I will get more particulars, including past history of the auto diagnostics program, and send it along tomorrow.
The local school board has deleted auto shop, that usually sent several top student techs to state final diagnostic competition, and spent $13 million on a performing arts center. I wonder how many of the kids will make a living singing and dancing?

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–Chukchi Sea polar bears number almost 3000 according to new survey results
The Chukchi Sea finally has a polar bear population estimate! According to survey results from 2016 only recently made public, about 2937 bears (1522-5944) currently inhabit the region, making this the largest subpopulation in the Arctic. This is exciting news — and a huge accomplishment — but the US Fish and Wildlife Service responsible for the work has been oddly mum on the topic.
Not only that, but an extrapolation of that estimate calculated by USFWS researchers for Chukchi plus Alaska (the US portion of the Southern Beaufort Sea subpopulation) was estimated at 4437 (2283-9527), although with “significant uncertainty.” Nevertheless, it means the 2016 estimate for Alaska could be roughly three times what it was in 2010: a whopping 1500 or so, up from about 450 (or about 225-650) for the same area estimated during the last survey (Bromaghin et al. 2015: Fig. 5a).
Even if the real number for Alaska is only twice as large (~1000), that’s still a huge improvement. It would eliminate the Southern Beaufort as the only polar bear subpopulation in the Arctic to have shown a significant decline blamed on human-caused global warming (Crockford 2018). If the recovery is real, it means the 2004-2006 decline was a temporary fluctuation after all, just like previous declines in the region. I expect, however, that it will take a dedicated SB population survey for officials to concede that point.
There is not yet a detailed report to cite (Regehr et al. in prep), but the numbers were announced at the 10th meeting of the Russian-American Commission on Polar Bears held at the end of July this year (AC SWG 2018) by Eric Regehr (formerly of the US Fish & Wildlife Service, as of 2017 at the University of Washington). [h/t to G.H.] This was the same report that raised the quota for subsistence hunting in the Chukchi from 58 to 85, based on these new figures.
Wrangel Island polar bear with cubs 2015 news story
From “Military bases to open on Wrangel Island and Chukotka” 22 October 2015.
Regehr was quoted as saying:
“Chukchi bears remain larger and fatter and have not seen downward trends in cub production and survival, according to new preliminary information on the health and numbers of bears.”
Recent research on polar bears and their prey has been on-going in the Chukchi Sea since 2008 (Crawford et al. 2015; Crawford and Quackenbush 2013; Rode and Regehr 2010; Regehr et al. 2010, Rode et al. 2014, 2015, 2018). Now it’s all coming together to paint a picture of a large population of polar bears in excellent physical condition, with strong reproduction and cub survival (such as triplet litters sighted on numerous occasions), despite a much longer ice-free period in summer than in the 1980s.
Fat bears have been a common summer sight in the Chukchi Sea as well as in Alaska.

WE RETURN TO THE BIKENET UNIVERSITY IN TIBET TO FIND A SPECIAL WORD–
cyclopean
[sahy-kluh-pee-uhn, sahy-klop-ee-uhn]
adjective
1.
gigantic; vast.
2.
(initial capital letter) of or characteristic of the Cyclops.
The most famous Cyclops is Polyphemus, a crude, solitary shepherd living on an island whom Odysseus blinded in Homer’s Odyssey. Hesiod (ca. 8th century b.c.) in his Theogony names three Cyclopes; they are craftsmen who make Zeus’s thunderbolts, and whom the Greeks often credited with building the walls of ancient Mycenae, Tiryns, Argos, and the acropolis of Athens, all constructed with massive limestone blocks roughly fitted together without mortar. Cyclopean entered English in the 17th century.

QUICK, OPEN THE REDHEAD WING IN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY– A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor’s office and said that
her body hurt wherever she touched it.
“Impossible!” says the doctor. “Show me.”
The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left breast and screamed,
then she pushed her elbow and screamed in even more. She pushed her knee
and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she
touched made her scream.
The doctor said, “You’re not really a redhead, are you?
“Well, no” she said, “I’m actually a blonde.”
“I thought so,” the doctor said. “Your finger is broken.”

JARED MEES WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE AMERICAN FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP ABOARD HIS INDIAN SCOUT FTR750
By Bikernet | | General Posts
In the 100th running of the legendary Springfield Mile, Jared Mees secured his fifth career Grand National Championship. His 2018 title marks back-to-back years as champion aboard his Indian Scout FTR750. In the final lap of the Springfield Mile II, fellow Indian Wrecking Crew rider Bryan Smith passed Mees and captured his first win of the 2018 season. The second-place finish was enough to lock-in the 2018 title for Mees.
Though the Springfield Mile II marked his first win of the season, this was Smith’s fifth time reaching the podium in 2018. Smith strategically sat out during the Peoria TT on August 18 to provide additional rest for a broken bone he’s been healing since crashing at the Texas Half-Mile in April. Smith last raced at the Black Hills Half-Mile on August 7, where he placed third.
“Bryan has had to overcome adversity this season. He’s a true competitor, and we couldn’t be happier to see him win in dramatic fashion,” said Gary Gray, Vice President – Racing, Technology & Service for Indian Motorcycle. “While celebrating with Bryan on his incredible victory, we also got to witness Mees bring home back-to-back titles on the Scout FTR750. His ability to be competitive in each and every race is astonishing. He’s truly one of the best to ever race.”
After more than 60 years away from flat track racing, Indian Motorcycle has captured consecutive Manufacturer’s Championships and back-to-back rider titles with Mees winning in 2017 and 2018. The Indian Motorcycle factory team dominated the 2017 schedule and swept first, second and third-place overall standings. In 2018, numerous privateers gravitated to the championship-winning race bike – choosing to pilot the Scout FTR750 in AFT competition. Nothing better exemplifies this than the 15 Scout FTR750’s that appeared in the Springfield Mile II Main event.
“The Scout FTR750 has been nothing short of a game changer. Not only for me personally, but we have seen it completely take over the pits,” said Mees. “But with more Scout FTR750’s, comes more competition. That competition, though, makes this title win that much sweeter. We’re extremely proud we have earned another year with the number one plate.”
Mees, Smith and the stable of privateers aboard the Scout FTR750 will continue the season on September 8 at the Williams Grove Half-Mile. For more information on Indian Motorcycle Racing, backed by Allstate Insurance, the Indian Wrecking Crew and Scout FTR750, visit IndianMotorcycle.com and follow along on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram. BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ADULT STUDY WORD OF THE DAY–andragogy
[an-druh-goh-jee, -goj-ee]
noun
1.
the methods or techniques used to teach adults: Many educators believe that the principles of andragogy, as advanced by Malcolm Knowles, have great relevance to adult education; others are not so certain.
… in the technology of andragogy there is decreasing emphasis on the transmittal techniques of traditional teaching and increasing emphasis on experimental techniques which tap the experience of the learners and involve them in analyzing their experience.
ORIGIN
English andragogy is modeled upon pedagogy, which ultimately comes from Greek paidagogía “the function of a paidagogós,” by extension “education.” A paidagogós, literally “child guide,” was a slave who walked a child to and from school. Paidagogós is a compound formed from paid-, inflectional stem of paîs ”child,” and agogós “guide,” a derivative of the verb ágein “to lead, take away, carry.”
NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT– Arctic Summer Sea Ice Growth Trend Extends Another Year …Greenland Summer One Of Coldest In 30 Years!
As the Arctic summer ice melt approaches its peak, we can say with high certainty that this year’s ice melt will extend the trend of a rebounding Arctic ice mass by another year.
Arctic summer sea ice now growing 12 years
Our Japanese skeptic blogger and good friend Kirye reports using the data from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) that peak summer Arctic sea ice volume upward growth trend has been extended yet another year – now 12 years.
Chart by Kirye. Data source: Danish Meteorology Institute (DMI).
Thus Arctic sea ice melt has defied the hysterical claims of disappearing sea ice made since the release of Al Gore’s climate propaganda film An Inconvenient Truth, shocking a number of experts.
Naturally alarmists, wishing all this good news away, like to roll out the PIOMASS chart to keep the alarms on life support. However, the PIOMASS chart conveniently only goes back to the peak of Arctic sea ice, 1980.
If the alarmists want us to go back and look long-term, then let’s at least go back to 1900. What follows is a chart depicting Arctic sea ice extent going back to 1900:
As the above chart shows, Arctic sea ice extent was similarly low some 90 years ago, a time when atmospheric CO2 was at what we are told are climatically very “safe levels”.
Sea ice has nothing to do with atmospheric CO2.
Obviously CO2 has virtually nothing to do with Arctic sea ice extent. Rather it behaves in response to other far more powerful natural cycles, namely oceanic cycles.
The following chart depicts Arctic sea ice volume compared to Atlantic sea surface temperature cycles, called the AMO:
Arctic sea ice extent is clearly driven by the natural temperature cycles of the North Atlantic.
Obviously the correlation between cyclic North Atlantic sea surface temperatures and Arctic sea ice extent are stunningly strong.
Greenland summer: one of the coldest in the past 30 years
Greenland is now seeing very cold temperature anomalies as well, a condition that Joe Bastardi of Weatherbell says will persist for a couple of weeks, tweeting here that there will be “very cold weather for the next 10-15 days”:
Greenland forecast to stay much colder than normal. Image cropped from WeatherBell August 23, 2018 Daily Update.
Summer will be one of coldest in 30 years
Joe in fact later tweeted that the entire Greenland winter as a whole has been a frigid one, and models expect to stay this way another 6 weeks:

The Great Global Warming Swindle—A film worth watching.
Originally broadcasted March 8, 2007 on British Channel 4. A documentary, by British television producer Martin Durkin, which argues against the virtually unchallenged consensus that global warming is man-made. A statement from the makers of this film asserts that the scientific theory of anthropogenic global warming could very well be “the biggest scam of modern times.”

HARLEY totally missed the mark with this overpriced fugly beast–
One seat? 240 tire? forward controls and drag bars, the flying V that every body hated about the V Rod?
All this stuff is yesterday and it was a bad fad then that went away? Suprised they didn’t stretch the tank.
Install a nice cool Le Pera cobra tuck and roll two up seat, quick. As every guy wants a bike to impress chicks, in the back of his mind and most have a partner who wants to ride. That shit went away when they put a speaker in iPhones, paint it candy blue, black or green, put a small fairing with a phone jack and a holder for your phone to play music.
Hide some small speakers somewhere, make it sound like a Harley without having to pay thousands for new pipes, air cleaner and brain box, mid controls or my god bring back kinda rear sets just to be creative, 6-inch z bars, make it lower to the ground so it is easier to handle the weight. The younger crowd isn’t looking for a Harley for canyon carving, or they will go buy an FZ 750 for that, so who really cars that it doesn’t scrape like Harley always have,
make it under $15,000 and the younger crowd might look at it.
But this thing is a bust– will never take off in 2018. But then what do I know. I have only been riding since 1965. Look back at what Honda did with the CB160 and the CB 305. They sold 100,000s.

Passing of Auntie ABATE aka Marlene Bautch–It is with great sadness that I must inform you that our “Auntie ABATE”, Marlene Bautch has lost her battle with cancer.
Marlene helped guide the direction of ABATE of WI over the last twenty-five years by doing the jobs of Recording Secretary, Newsletter Editor, and Office Manager alongside of six different Executive Directors and twelve elections. Until earlier this year she had attended over three hundred consecutive board of directors meetings acting as Secretary.
Marlene’s work extended far beyond her elected and appointed positions within ABATE of WI Inc. She was a staunch supporter of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation and presented at dozens of workshops hosted by the organization nationally. Several years ago she was awarded the MRF’s highest honor, The Farmer Award, for her work towards the success of the national motorcyclists’ rights movement.
As “Auntie ABATE”, Marlene sought to offer common sense advice about ABATE of WI and our issues through the words of a sweet old Polish auntie. Her adherence to the rules and bylaws of the organization may have ruffled a few feathers along the way but it also encouraged many regional leaders to work together to grow and make ABATE of WI the legislative powerhouse it is today.
Marlene’s support and knowledge of the organization helped everyone she worked with to maximize their already defective “volunteer gene”. Her tireless efforts towards the success of ABATE of WI will be greatly missed. It’s going to take a lot of effort to fill her shoes.
As more information becomes available from her family, ABATE of WI will be sharing it with our great extended family. We offer condolences to her husband Twit and ask that you respect his privacy at this time.
We will all miss you Marlene.

National boycott of the NFL for Sunday November 12th, Veterans Day Weekend. Boycott all football telecast, all fans, all ticket holders, stay away from attending any games, let them play to empty stadiums. Pass this post along to all your friends and family. Society has trouble talking about police misconduct in any meaningful way. If we question police actions, it looks as if we don’t support them. In reality, most of us do support the brave men and women who put themselves on the line every day for our safety.
When traffic stops are the most common daily interface between law enforcement and the public, and charges of abuse stem from some of those interactions, overall police behavior is very much a motorists’ issue.
One of the best checks and balances against abusive behaviors or policies by public institutions is transparency. Often however it is a difficult commodity to come by.
California, for example, currently has the strictest state laws when it comes to protecting police confidentiality. Apparently this occurred in the 1970s after Los Angeles police officers shredded personnel records dating to the 1940s in order to avoid over 100 cases of police misconduct.
Due to pressure from the police union, state lawmakers then passed a law that ensured officer discipline records would be preserved, while at the same time making it impossible for anyone outside of the chain of command to access them.
California lawmakers now are wrestling with a landmark effort to ease record disclosure regulations. They continue to run into fierce opposition from police unions. Legislators have countered by stating that police are out of touch with public sentiment over how officers use profiling techniques and force.
Public disclosure of police misconduct is just one basic element of oversight and is the law in many states. The problem in California is that its privacy laws for disclosure are also those that keep necessary information from prosecutors who must disclose any relevant information to the defense about officers in a court case. This could have serious repercussions as recently seen this summer in Los Angeles and Orange Counties which have been rocked with false testimony scandals of sheriff’s deputies. This could result in hundreds of cases retried or dismissed.
Retrying cases due to police misconduct and victims of misconduct winning civil cases against police departments is expensive. Already this year, Chicago taxpayers have paid out $50 million to victims of such actions. Small towns that are sued sometimes lose their insurance and/or have to shut down their police departments entirely.
Citizen groups across the country are now taking action in asking for more police transparency.
In Nashville, Tennessee, a group called Community Oversight Now has had its petition certified by the Davidson County Election Committee that would allow a November referendum vote on the creation of a new civilian-led board giving the authority to review the actions of police. The local police union plans to sue to stop the referendum in court. Mayor David Briley supports the concept and vows to create a civilian oversight board by executive order if the referendum does not pass.
A statewide Virginia coalition of community activists is calling for more police accountability in Richmond and has sought, through the Freedom of Information Act, data on the city’s ‘stop and frisk’ program. The New Virginia Majority have been told that the department could not provide the data since the information has never been collected in a meaningful way. Police in Chesterfield and Henrico counties recently provided similar responses. Last year, the group was successful in petitioning the Richmond PD to provide its use-of-force and complaint data online.
As community groups demand more police transparency and protection of constitutional rights, there could well be more pushback from police unions and departments.
To do the difficult job that society has tasked them with, law enforcement agencies need to be morally, legally and culturally bound to report bad behavior. Reporting misconduct and brutality should never be an exception to the rule.
If the true cost of police misconduct were better understood, reform would be more readily accomplished to the benefit of the people as well as to the vast majority of law enforcement officers who discharge their duties with honor and respect.
CLIMATE DEBATE CONFIRMED—We confirmed our answers. Okay, let’s see if we can make the Climate Debate simple:
Alarmist: Watch out for Global Warming!
Bikernet: Oops, sorry it’s not warming but actually cooling slightly.
Alarmist: CO2 is destroying the planet!
Bikernet: Oops, it’s not. CO2 levels are the lowest they’ve been in centuries. Every plant on the planet needs CO2.
Alarmist: Most of the CO2 comes from mobil sources like cars and trucks!
Bikernet: Oops, sorry, maybe less than 10 percent. Cows produce more than 50 percent.
Alarmist: The seas are rising!
Bikernet: Oops, sorry, centuries ago they rose 10 inches a century. Now they are rising only 7 inches every 100 years.
Alarmist: We can blame every storm and quirky weather pattern on man.
Bikernet: Oops, sorry. The weather has been much worse before man came along. If it wasn’t for climate change Earth wouldn’t exist. Nothing to do with man.
Does that make it easy?
We asked the boss of the Climate debate, Marc Morano, to check our assumptions and he made one correction.
Thanks. Very well said. Only one correction: “CO2 levels are the lowest they’ve been in centuries.”
It should read lower now than the entire past history of the Earth.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS OPEN FOR LUNCH— Paddy was planning to get married and asked his doctor how he could tell if his bride is a virgin.
The doctor said, “Well, you need three things from a do it yourself shop. A can of red paint, a can of blue paint… and a shovel.”
Paddy asked, “And what do I do with these, doc?”
The doctor replied, “Before the wedding night, you paint one of your testicles red and the other one blue. If she says, ‘That’s the strangest pair of balls I ever saw.’, you hit her with the shovel.”

BEST COLUMN OF THE WEEK—What Cuomo got wrong about America.
Andrew Cuomo might have sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, said James Freeman, but he “just disqualified himself.” Last week, New York’s governor tried to embellish his progressive credentials by saying, “We’re not going to make America great again—it was never that great.” In a panic, Cuomo later clarified that he meant that America would be greater when everyone has “full equality.”
“Too late, The video of that quote will haunt him if he seeks higher office. As well it should. The U.S. is hardly a perfect nation, and it took a bloody civil war” to end the monstrous institution of slavery.”
But America’s contributions to human freedom and flourishing are without peer. “Billions of people are better off,” because of the U.S.’s critical role in defeating “the twin terrors” of the 20th century—Nazism and communism. We send more than $100 billion in private and public aid each year to the developing world, and our uniquely entrepreneurial culture—including the tech industry—has “generated unprecedented prosperity” that has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. Our Constitution has served as a model for countries around the world. “America is not just great. It’s the greatest.”

MILWAUKEE’S RAIL PROBLEM COMES TO A BIKERNET SPONSOR–
The law firm of Hupy and Abraham, S.C. has announced that firm president, Attorney Michael Hupy has been hired by a motorcyclist injured in a Milwaukee streetcar accident. The client has filed against the city of Milwaukee after an accident that occurred on July 26, 2018.
The motorcyclist was headed east on St. Paul street. Client was attempting a lane switch in order to turn left onto Water street, when his front motorcycle tire became wedged in the streetcar tracks, causing him to be thrown from his motorcycle. This resulted in him landing in the opposite lane of traffic and a broken arm.
The city of Milwaukee originally had a streetcar system that opened over 150 years ago. The old system was closed in the 1950s. The modern Milwaukee Streetcar has been in development since 2016 and will begin official operation this fall. The Streetcar, also known as “The Hop MKE” has said that it will improve public transit and attract more talent, employers and tourists for the city.
A longtime supporter and presence in the motorcycle community, Hupy and Abraham has represented over 4,000 injured motorcyclists and this case is the first accident of its kind.
“Attorney Hupy stated, “I have been a vocal critic of the streetcar from beginning, because we have buses that do what streetcars can do without endangering motorcyclists and bicyclists.” There are concerns by others in the motorcycle community that these incidents will continue to happen due to the construction of the project.
The roots of Hupy and Abraham, S.C. can be traced back to the mid-1960s, with Attorney Hupy joining the firm in 1989. Some of Attorney Hupy’s notable cases include a $5 million result for a 16-year old after he was hit by a truck in Milwaukee, and an $18.2 million settlement after a trial against the federal government. He also obtained a $1.1 million verdict for an injured Wisconsin motorcyclist, which ended up being the largest settlement in Milwaukee County for that year.
Hupy and Abraham practices in the areas of car accidents, motorcycle accidents, dog bites, nursing home abuse and neglect, and other personal injury related categories. The law firm has collected over $1 billion in verdicts and settlements.
Dilemma: How to get 2 million new Harley-Davidson riders in 10 years as Harley’s CEO has promised.
Columbus Ohio, October 2017; Polaris/Indian’s CEO and Harley’s CEO both squared off at the AIM Motorcycle Show to give their assessment of where the Motorcycle Industry needs to go:
Both CEO’s indicated they both got hooked on motorcycles on small dirt bikes. Scott Wine indicated his first ride was a Honda 50 and Matt Levatich indicated his first ride was a 1973 TL125 Honda Dirt Bike at the age of 8.
Both CEO’s indicate a key to this industry is to get “young butts on seats”, however, both fail to have products that do get “young butts on seats”. What’s up with this?
Are they both relying on Honda/Yamaha to get butts on their seats or should one of these American brands have motorcycles that organically cultivate new and younger riders for their brand in their dealerships?
News Flash; There is a small American Dirt-bike manufacturer in Utah, ATK, that has manufactured over 18,000 Dirt-bikes (50cc to 700cc) in the USA since 1985. ATK is the third member of the United States Motorcycle Manufacturers Association, the others being; Harley-Davidson and Polaris/Indian. ATK makes motorcycles / minibikes that do get “young butts on seats”, that actually could organically cultivate new and much younger riders in their dealerships? Research indicates most people learn to ride as kids on dirt bikes.
ATK is no stranger to Harley-Davidson or Polaris/Indian. According to ATK’s CEO, Frank White, “We at ATK have sold either Dirtbikes, Dual Sport, Minibikes or small 250cc streetbikes to over 260 Harley Dealerships since 1985 and many of our dealers have Polaris too”. Why hasn’t Harley-Davidson or Polaris/Indian purchased the only American Off-Road Brand ATK to create new riders?
What does the investment community think about ATK dirtbikes in either Harley or Polaris Dealerships?
Link: MotleyFool2017/8/6Harley-ATK
While there are any number of dirt-bike makers, there’s only one that’s a member of the U.S. Motorcycle Manufacturers Association, ATK Motorcycles. Along with Harley-Davidson and Polaris Industries, they comprise the triumvirate of the U.S. bike industry.
Making a play for ATK instead of Ducati would zero in on exactly what Harley and the motorcycle industry need and keeps its “made in America” heritage intact. It would also undoubtedly be available for substantially less than the $1.7 billion Ducati is reportedly seeking..
Harley-Davidson knows it needs younger bike riders as its core customer are aging rapidly and selling off their bikes. Still, even buying a dirt-bike manufacturer is a long-term solution to its woes and not anything that will help this quarter or even this year. But it would give Harley’s dealers the chance to offer customers a range of motorcycles depending upon where they are in their riding career.
The time to make an impression on new riders is when they’re kids, and off-road dirt bikes are where many riders got their first taste of “the awesome thing that is riding.”

KEEP THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY WIDE OPEN–Ventriloquist Apologizes
A young ventriloquist is touring Norway and puts on a show in a small fishing town. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes.
Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting, “I’ve heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype Norwegian blonde women that way? What does the color of a woman’s hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It’s men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. Its people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general, pathetically all in the name of humor!”
The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde interrupts yelling, “You stay out of this! I’m talking to that little shit on your lap.”

FROM THE PRESIDENT–‘I Have a Dream,’ 55 years on
Fifty-five years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered what would become one of the great speeches in America’s history at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Half a century after “I Have a Dream,” President Donald J. Trump says “our Nation reaffirms our commitment to protecting the promise of America for all our people.” That promise includes expanding opportunity for every citizen. “As a result, for example, we have already seen the unemployment rate for African Americans reach a record low.”
Markets soar as President announces new deal
A day after President Trump announced a preliminary trade deal with Mexico, news broke that consumer confidence in August has reached its highest level since October 2000, CNBC reports.
That’s big news: Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of all U.S. economic activity, so economists pay close attention to it. “These historically high confidence levels should continue to support healthy consumer spending in the near-term,” said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at The Conference Board.
The S&P 500 and NASDAQ also soared to record highs yesterday as President Trump made good on his promise to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). “This is something that’s very special for our manufacturers and for our farmers from both countries,” President Trump told President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto in a phone call from the Oval Office yesterday.
“The Teamsters Union has long been a leader in demanding real reforms to NAFTA to make it work for workers across all of North America,” Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa said. “We believe that the Administration has taken real steps to deal with our concerns.”
CNBC: Consumer confidence pops to highest level since 2000
In their words: “Our Negotiator-in-Chief will close a deal [for] all Americans.”
Ivanka Trump: Why we must empower women
Yesterday, Ivanka Trump joined Ambassadors from across the Western Hemisphere at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C. Her message was simple: Women’s economic empowerment makes everyone better off.
“We believe, we know that the world is more prosperous, more peaceful when women can fully participate in the economy,” Ms. Trump told OAS. “Advancing economic opportunity for women in our hemisphere is essential to fostering lasting peace, stability, and opportunities in the Americas.”

SPEAKING OF WEATHER–When you read this, you will never think of Thunderstorms the same way again.
A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to school. As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with lightning.
The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school. She also feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of concern, the mother got into her car and quickly drove along the route to her child’s school. As she did, she saw her little girl walking along.
At each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, and smile. More lighting followed quickly and with each, the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile.
When the mother drew up beside the child, she lowered the window and called, “What are you doing?”
The child answered, “I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my picture.”

THE REAL TRUTH–Subject: Fwd: Harley Davidson closing plant for declining sales…
Apparently the Baby-Boomers all have motorcycles.
Generation X is only buying a few, and the next generation isn’t buying any at all.
A recent study was done to find out why?
Here are the reasons why Millennials don’t ride motorcycles:
1. Pants won’t pull up far enough for them to straddle the seat.
2. Can’t get their phone to their ear with a helmet on.
3. Can’t use two hands to eat while driving.
4. They don’t get a trophy and a recognition plaque just for buying one.
5. Don’t have enough muscle to hold the bike up when stopped.
6. Might have a bug hit them in the face and then they would need emergency care.
7. Motorcycles don’t have air conditioning.
8. They can’t afford one because they spent 12 years in college trying to get a degree in Humanities, Social Studies or Gender Studies for which no jobs are available.
9. They are allergic to fresh air.
10. Their pajamas get caught on the exhaust pipes.
11. They might get their hands dirty checking the oil.
12. The handlebars have buttons and levers and cannot be controlled by touch-screen.
13. You have to shift manually and use something called a clutch.
14. It’s too hard to take selfies while riding.
15. They don’t come with training wheels like their bicycles did.
16. Motorcycles don’t have power steering or power brakes.
17. Their nose ring interferes with the face shield.
18. They would have to use leg muscle to back up.
19. When they stop, a light breeze might blow exhaust in their face.
20. It could rain on them and expose them to non-soft water.
21. It might scare their therapy dog, and then the dog would need therapy.

NEW FROM CYRON-MOTOR– For well over a decade, the brand Cyron has been synonymous with cutting edge technology in the power-sport and performance automotive industries in the LED Lighting category.
We are proud to announce our all new Cyron Motor AC11 series tail / signal light inserts.
Cyron Motor AC11 series LED inserts are for turn signal lights mostly for Harley Davidson motorcycles. Unlike other lights in the market that have narrow angles of light using old technology LEDs, AC11 series use 120 degrees ultra wide viewing angle SMD LEDs.
Offering such a wide viewing angle makes this turn signal visible from adjacent road lanes, where it counts the most. When turning or changing lanes normally vehicles and pedestrians in 30 or 45 degrees off axis are most important to be alerted. More than 3 times more effective light in such angles makes AC11 series a clear winner.

Honda CB 750, Happy 50th Birthday
https://www.bikernet.com/pages/Honda_CB_750__Happy_50th_Birthday.aspx
A friend of mine, we were stationed on the USS Saint Francis River LSMR 525. His name was Conner and had a close friend Tyler.
They came and visited me up in Riverside after we came back from Vietnam it was 1970. Connor had just bought a CB750 and Tyler had just bought a Norton Camando 750.
Connor told me to take a ride on his CB750. He said you won’t believe it. I remember getting on it and starting it. It was amazing how quick the engine reved up. I remember how smooth it was going down the road and the power was something.
I remember getting use to it and opened it up. I remember looking down at the speedo and it was incredible 80 mph in seconds. I will always remember that experience and my two friends from South Carolina. Thanks Connor for that memory.
This article had reminded me of those times we served together. I hope there still out there somewhere.

THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB FILES–Booting bikies* a boon
Deporting foreign crooks including bikies from Australia delivers big savings. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been saved by deporting 3600 foreign-born criminals in the past 3½ years. Since December 2014, visas are able to be cancelled or denied on character grounds, including current or former membership of groups reasonably suspected of involvement in crime such as bikie gangs. (Bikie gangs are all the M/Cs the government has chosen to include, some 44 of them).
By June 30th this year, 3687 foreign-born criminals, 627 of them from the state of Victoria, had been deported. Of those, 1219 were guilty of assaults, grievous bodily harm, family violence or other violence; 633 were drug dealers; 151 were rapists; 98 were killers; 1586 were guilty of theft, robbery and white collar and other crime.
Australian Institute of Criminology Research requested by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, found cancelling and refusing visas of just 139 bikies and 45 other organized crime offenders – 24 of whom were from Victoria – had saved taxpayers an estimated $116 million dollars.
The AIC found: bikies commit more crime, and more serious crime, than other organized crime figures. By age 60, the average bikie will have spent almost seven years in jail at a cost to the taxpayers of $800,000-plus each. Cancelling a bikie’s visa at 20 would save the taxpayer and average of $1.3,million per offender.
Crimes by bikies cost an average of $526,462 each and they are significantly more likely to commit violent crime than other organized crime figures. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said that bikies were the nation’s main drug importers and distributors. The research on these matters was based on a sample of 6154 offenders responsible for 97,706 offences committed by 611 bikies and 5543 other organized crime figures.
* Bikies – a term labelling all members of outlaw (and outlawed) club members. According to the Australian Crime Commission, outlaw motorcycle club gangs (OMCGs) are among the most identifiable components of Australia’s criminal landscape.
The ACC says OCMGs are active in all states and territories and lists 44 as being of interest, with a total of 179 chapters and 4,483 members.
The Rebels gang boasts by far the biggest membership, at 25 per cent of the total, while the Bandidos have 7 per cent, the Outlaws and Hells Angels 6 per cent, Lone Wolf 5 per cent and Comancheros 5 per cent.

The Truth Behind “American Chopper” Will Get Your Motor Revving
The reality show American Chopper changed the landscape of cable television when it premiered in 2003. Viewers were instantly hooked on the series following the trials and tribulations of a father and son team running an Orange County motorcycle shop. And for all the drama the cameras captured, there was even more happening when they were turned off. This is the story of American Chopper you didn’t get to see. Your jaw will drop when you learn how many times the Teutuls have been sued!
Paul Senior Passed His Addiction Habits Onto His Sons
No one on American Chopper had a bigger personality than Paul Sr. Unfortunately, he also had a problem with addiction and spent 15 years addicted to alcohol before going to rehab. In true Paul fashion, he hated the idea of rehab but went to save his marriage.
Before going, Paul threw himself one last rager. By the time Paul cleaned himself up, he had passed his bad habits onto his sons. Paul Jr. entered rehab at 16-years-old. Next, the story of how the father and son fighting almost ended the show.
During the run of the show, the feud between Paul Sr. and Paul Jr. grew so toxic that the father fired his son. TLC threatened to end the show if Paul Jr. wasn’t re-hired. According to the network, their contracts called for both men to participate in the show.
When Paul Sr. refused, TLC filed a notice of default. The show was canceled until Paul began using his son as a contractor, allowing him to appear on the show without being a member of the motorcycle shop.
In 2010, Paul Jr. married Rachael Biester, his girlfriend of two years. The pair met while American Chopper was filming and fell in love instantly. Unfortunately, the wedding took place at the same time Paul Sr. was battling Paul Jr. in court.
Because of the timing of the wedding and emotions of the feud, Paul Sr. chose not to attend his son’s wedding. Looking back on it, he probably regrets the decision, but there’s nothing he can do about it now.

MORE FROM THE WHITEHOUSE–
US Economic Growth in the 2nd Quarter Gets Revised Higher, Remains Strongest Since 2014
“The US economy in the second quarter grew even faster than initially estimated, according to a Commerce Department report released Wednesday,” Akin Oyedele reports for Business Insider.
“Gross domestic product, the value of every good and service produced domestically, rose at an annual rate of 4.2%, the Commerce Department said, its fastest growth since the third quarter of 2014 . . . The April-to-June period was the first full quarter with the tax cuts signed by President Donald Trump in effect,” Oyedele explains.
“The vast majority of U.S. blue-collar workers say their lives are headed ‘in the right direction,’ according to the results of a poll released this week,” Katelyn Caralle reports in the Washington Examiner. “Eighty-five percent of these workers in America are optimistic regarding the direction of their lives, and 86 percent are satisfied with their jobs.” A majority also expressed optimism about the overall direction of the country, the survey showed.
The Associated Press reports that President Trump is awarding $91 million in grants to a record number of community anti-drug coalitions. “The White House says all 50 states will benefit from the grants from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy that aim to ‘strengthen the infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in local youth substance abuse.’”
The Investor’s Business Daily Editorial Board writes that household income has soared to all-time highs under President Trump. “Median household income is up more than 4%, the economy is growing fast, optimism is at decades long highs . . . Over the course of President Obama’s entire eight years in office, median household income climbed a mere 0.3%.”
In The Wall Street Journal, Lauren Weber reports that American workers have the highest job satisfaction since 2005. “Just more than half of U.S. workers—51%—said they were satisfied with their jobs in 2017, the highest level since 2005, according to a new report from The Conference Board,” she writes.
I read in the Week Magazine where Trump is working with the financial community to abolish the quarterly report system. It puts a great deal of strain on companies forced to show profits every quarter, rather than thinking of overall substantial growth. Interesting.–Bandit

“My teenage daughter came home in a rage.

I put down my paper: ‘Oh, he will, sweetheart, he will.’ ”

I DON’T GET IT—On the other hand maybe I do. We are talking about artificial intelligence and self-driving cars, but we can’t fix the homeless issue, the drug problem, or the RV dwellers. Maybe we need an auto-government that doesn’t do the wrong thing or nothing for votes but does the right thing for the tax-paying citizens. Interesting.
I’ve been scrambling all day on the news and I can’t wait to take the Panhead out for another break-in putt.
I’ve started to work on my screenplay again, and I’m reading a book about writing screenplays. It’s interesting and making me think.
Our lives are changing so rapidly, and there’s a side of me that would like to slow down some and get away from all the tech bullshit. I watched a piece about some place in Montana where there are no cell phones or microwaves. It’s a trip, and the kids love it. “If you want to see someone, go knock on their door.” “If you have a flat tire, fix it and go home.”
I love it. Ride Free Forever,

Harley 115th — 6th and 7th Victims of Trolley Tracks Injured Last Night On St. Paul Near Water Street
By Bikernet | | General Posts
A former Wauwatosa police office whose wife was on the back of his motorcycle was traveling east on St. Paul last night when the officer moved to his left to turn north onto Water Street. He did not know the tracks were there and could not see them because it was night time. His bike fell over and both were injured. Five motorcyclists or bicyclists have been injured in this area, I am going to write the Mayor a letter to be hand delivered today asking the city do something to the trolley tracks to protect citizens and Harley Davidson 115th attendees from the trolley tracks.
Peter’s Bike in “Easy Rider”
By Bandit | | General Posts
Editor’s Note: This kicks off with a letter from a reader to the Editor of “Choppers Mag” in 1969, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. –Bandit
Big Daddy,
I have just seen a photo of the bike Peter Fonda rides in his new Movie “Easy Rider.” It is a really boss street machine, which is what I like to see. Why don’t you run a few pages about it in your magazine and maybe a few lines about the movie.
“Choppers Magazine” is a great help to people like myself who have a lot of learning to do before it is possible to build a good (in dependability, as well as looks) custom machine. I hope that it keeps coming for years to come.
Thank you,
–Bill Johnson
You asked for it Bill Johnson, so here it is, the complete rundown of the bike for Fonda’s movie “Easy Rider.”
Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper both had two bikes each for the “Easy Rider” movie. The man responsible for coordinating the bike building effort is Cliff Vaughs. Cliff worked with Fonda to get the right people to do the jobs on the bikes. For instance, Ben Hardy (brother Ben) added his thing by gathering all the parts necessary for the job.
Ben and Cliff retained the early cradle frames (’48-’56) and too, the Captain America frame to Buchanan’s frame shop for a rake of 45 degrees. The neck was cut off and repositioned, so that the forks make an angle with a vertical line of 45 degrees. The glide forks had to be lengthened 12 inches to compensate for the wild rake.
Stock glide risers are bolted to the ’57 top tripe tree and fitted with a set of A.E.E. lower triple trees, which in turn had dog-bones mounted on them and a set of 13-inch high-riser bars. Fonda and Vaughs told Dean Lonza (the Dean of bike painters) to make the bike look like Capt. America’s Shield… and it does!!
Brother Ben hardy is the man behind the most of the Easy Rider Bikes construction. His shop was on Florence in Los Angeles (1168 E.).
Fonda had added a giant moneymaker to Movieland. His “Easy Rider” is a boss flick and one to be sure to see. It deals with things as they are. Fonda and Hopper filmed on the road and used real sets and people. The results are excellent.
Hardy’s experience in bikes ranges back into the ‘50s when he picked up on bike engines at MC Supply…Now his business consists mostly of assembling choppers and selling used parts that are hard to find.
Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trails 2018
By Bikernet | | General Posts
So Speed Week has come and gone at the Bonneville Salt Flats, but for those of us only interested in the two wheel variety of speed freak fun, the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials are just starting.
For me this is a bittersweet return. After many years away from what I have become to know as a second home, I am back among old friends and family. The salt conditions are, as many folks have reported, the best they have seen in ten years. With the weather report looking clear into next week, it would seem that each of the 250-some registered riders are poised to smash the record books. With the track set up complete, we spent the day watching all the riders shiver nervously as they stood in line for tech inspection. Scrutineering, as it is called, is run by Drew Gatewood, and he has broken many hearts at the Speed Trials over the years; exactly what I am hoping doesn’t happen to me this year. Read more.
