The Resurrection of the 1966 Red Dragon
By Bikernet | | General Posts
While the mythical dragon may have been rooted in early discoveries of fossil dinosaur bones, today the image of the dragon is a popular subject in many cultures where it appears in many forms and colors, but symbolically sharing common attributes. In the pantheon of animal imagery originating in the East, the dragon is seen as the master of all primal elements, capable of breathing both fire and ice as well as foreseeing future events and often symbolic of powerful rulers. All the above could also be ascribed to a particular motorcycle, the Honda “Red Dragon” itself rare as dragon teeth. Myth or reality?
The story of the “Red Dragon” begins sometime back in the early 1960s when Honda’s star was rising not only over Japan but casting its corporate light world-wide, its milestone motorcycles setting new standards for quality and dependability as well as marketing savvy. Read more.
Cantina Episode number 80: Old Outlaw

He rode an old Panhead classic with an extended glide, a peanut tank and a King and Queen seat. The tall sissybar held all the rider’s belongings. As he pulled up and stopped, Marko watched every move. The Cantina bustled on Friday. Cinco de Mayo would rock Saturday and parties rolled all over the city and especially in the Hispanic neighborhoods. Los Angeles grew to almost 50 percent Hispanic, and Wilmington, just south of San Pedro grew to 90 percent Latino. It would glisten on Saturday night for the party. Read more in the Bikernet Cantina.

As spotlighted a half century ago in early industry icon Floyd Clymer’s 1965 book A Treasury of Motorcycles of the World, the advent of the new Honda 450 was heralded as “a machine that riders and dealers of both lightweight and large machines have been anxiously awaiting. It is Honda’s largest model. It is the first effort by a major lightweight manufacturer to branch out from the “fun” riding field into the realm of serious high-speed motorcycling. Although the engine is smaller than others in the “big bike” class, its status is enhanced by the fact that it has double overhead camshafts, an extremely efficient valve gear design. It is a relatively heavy bike, still unusually agile. Outstanding features include the electric starter, 12-volt electrical system, and rubber-mounted twin carburetors. The 450 also features an extremely large gasoline tank (4.2 gallons). Claimed top speed is 112 mph.
While Honda had bestowed somewhat catchy names to previous models such as “Cub,” “Benly,” “Super Hawk,” and “Dream,” the original designation for the new machine was simply CB450, but it appears they were also tagged as the “Hellcat,” a possible reference to a WWII aircraft. In the general parlance the first crop of black 450s are referred to as the “Black Bomber” perhaps originally due to the bomb-like shape of the gas tank. Others speculate that the moniker “Black Bomber” was attributed to British dealers who came up with the name. It also seems Honda painted the U.S. bikes black because they thought it the color most appealing to Yanks. Case in point, the popularity of the 1950s Triumph Thunderbird, originally factory painted blue then re-painted black and called the Blackbird for the U.S. market after a blacked-out Tbird was ridden by “Johnny” in the Marlon Brando bike flick, “The Wild One.”
While Honda lists August 1965 as the introduction for the 450, the bike’s first official appearance was during the UK’s Diamond Jubilee Brighton Speed Trials circa September 1965. None other than “Mike the Bike” Hailwood then scheduled to pilot the new machine at the Brand Hatch 500-mile production race in July 1966, but managed only a few demo laps as then current FIM rules barred it from the race because of its “advantage” over the competition via its DOHC design.
A March 1966 feature on the bike appearing in a Brit mag extolled its praises, including its 14.6 second quarter mile performance, opening with “The Honda CB450 is a searing, potent piece of machinery that can hold its own with almost any model in production today, irrespective of size.” It went on to say the bike had been clocked at 100 mph at 9200 rpm, but tractable enough also “happy to pobble at 4,000 rpm in top gear.” The article goes on to add, “At 95 mph it is the smoothest power unit imaginable, and the twin exhausts keep you in mind of a well-tuned four on the TT course.” It does point out the available “basic colour scheme is black and silver.” So here begins the rub….or should we say, red, and the trail thereof tracking down the provenance of the Red Dragon, as rare as the mythical creature’s teeth.
***********
See the Fabulous CB 450 Dragon – 1966 advertisement
When a friend brought the Brit magazine to Shannon’s attention, it provided another piece of name game puzzle. Here the name “Dragon” is attached to the CB450 designation and perhaps because dragons are frequently portrayed as red, it may link the birth of the name to CB450’s dressed in red. (Not to be confused with the Honda CL350 Flying Dragon Paint Set that appeared later in 1972, the swirling ink/psychedelic colors intended to enhance1972-73 CL350 Scramblers.
****************
The early incarnation of the KO CB450 with its distinctive gas tank lasted only 1965-67 at which point Honda deemed it necessary to provide an “updated” new look via the K1. While some joke that the name “Black Bomber” had a secondary connotation as in “sales bombed,” the public not particularly drawn to its design and subsequently Honda not happy with the sales figures, however an estimated 29,000 units sold might have been considered healthy enough back in the day.
Fast forward a half century and entering the fray is Shannon Sweeney of SS Classics, his one-man SoCal enterprise specializing in ’60-70s Japanese bikes, both their restoration and special constructions aka café racers/street trackers. When asked when his Red Dragon saga began, he says, “All told it was about an 8-year deal because when I originally got the bike, thinking it was a standard Black Bomber, then I discovered it was originally red, so started the search to determine if it actually came that color from the factory. I found that the line-up of 1966 Honda bikes came in four colors, black, white, blue and red, but the 450 when introduced that year came only in black. That’s why I was initially confused, thinking in ’66 you could choose your Honda color, but not so with the new 450. While Honda red is not rare in itself and found on their other bikes, it seemed the 450s only came in black for the U.S. market. That’s when the whole mystery started for me. But I had to prove that the Red Dragon actually existed, otherwise why the effort in attempting the restoration project.”
After putting out the word about the bike, Shannon found himself the recipient of plenty of advice, but most people were saying, no, the bike is really black, not red, Honda never making a red one. No such thing as a Red Dragon. “But,” says Shannon, “I’d had a 450 Black Bomber and also a white one in police trim. And I had documentation. The absolute, definitive proof that Honda produced a Red Dragon is found in the factory parts manual that showed every part in every color available for the 450….white for the police version, standard black and there it was… scarlet aka red. Eventually I found four Red Dragons, as far as I know all 1966 productions. Now it could be, depending on what part of the year, early or late, they might have been considered a ’65 or ’67.”
Says Shannon, “This is my speculation, but maybe the first year they’re like, okay, they’re not selling, so second year let’s make some red ones, and that didn’t work, then in ’67 they sold the last of the black ones, and that was it, they were done. Maybe they didn’t give up completely, because in ’67 the factory offered something they listed as a D Kit for the Bomber. The kit including a different tank, different handlebars and chrome fenders and a set of two high scrambler pipes, the only time Honda offered separated pipes, later Scramblers featuring both pipes melded together one side. You could take the stuff of your Black Bomber and bolt on a choice of silver/black/candy blue/black, candy red/black. I think the idea was to entice people to buy Bombers and sell the kit if they wanted to make them “cooler” and off-roadable.
Slogging on, Shannon located two Red Dragons in Canada and then a number of people in the vintage bike community who rallied to Shannon’s efforts responded by saying there were some of the rare red beasts still prowling around Europe. “I don’t know the exact number produced, from what I can gather Honda didn’t keep a record of their production as it was near the end of the line merging with the introduction of redesigned 450’s. It seems someone decided to paint some of the Black Bombers red for sale in the UK market where riders were more familiar with red being the sporty color as seen on bikes like the Ducati and Moto Guzzi. This color variation could have been an effort to pump up sales and so the reason some Red Dragons then made it to Canada, a UK commonwealth nation, and then a few eventually migrating down to the U.S. including this one I found in Indiana. As far as I know Red Dragons were not sold by dealers here.”
A bit of unusual evidence appeared one day when Bill “Mr. Honda” Silver, noted authority on vintage Hondas, informed Shannon about a vintage LP record album by jazz great Maynard Ferguson, showing the trumpeter astride a mint looking Red Dragon. The 1968 recording was titled “Ridin’ High” and included a song called “Meet a Cheetah” which seems appropriate considering with the choice of cover design. In small print on the back of the album were some tell-tale facts relating to the unearthing of the Red Dragon’s roots in North America. The original photo seen on the cover is credited to Bently’s Cycle & sports located in Montreal, Quebec…the Canadian connection established.
In September 2013, after completing his research effort and authenticating the Red Dragon as the real deal, Shannon launched into the restoration. While many of the original pieces were in place, the hunt entailed some serious legwork. In the process, he also found a can of original Honda factory scarlet paint with matching parts catalog numbers. He was able to computer color match it with a current DuPont pigment and thus was able to produce enough to repaint the bike.
It was a delicate process shoehorning the bike into the freshly painted frame, again handled by Shannon on the solo as was the entire build with a “little help from his friends.” This included polishing and chroming by Stutzman Plating and Supreme Plating, both located in L.A. Much valued assistance focused on the Red Dragon’s 444cc DOHC powerplant with the top end rebuilt a 77-year old mechanical engineer who had worked his magic on several top ends for Shannon’s previous projects. In 1965 the engine rebuilder also helped design a one-off high altitude balloon capsule for Honda that could ascend to 80,000 ft., so he knew his stuff.
Says Shannon, “Bottom line, I wanted to keep the bike as original as possible rather than absolutely perfect looking.” That included retaining the original wiring harness, tach cable, side covers, headlight, taillight, and instrument cluster and gas tank. GTL Advantage (N. Hollywood, CA) sealed the inside of the tank while the rubber knee grips are miraculously the originals, the tank badges high quality aftermarket. Shannon sourced the correct spokes, the nipples differing with the various Honda rims, from a supplier in Japan while the D.I.D. rims are original and rechromed, then reshod with Duro tires which came closest to the bike’s original tread design. The hubs were completely rebuilt and polished with new brake shoes installed.
The seat, utilizing the original pan was re-upholstered by Hai at South Bay Upholstery and based on an original seat Shannon brought as a template. The original seat buckle and rivets were rechromed, but while the Honda signature logo always appeared on the rear of the seat, he decided not to add it…as least yet. “I like the fact that there’s nothing identifying the bike as Honda at first glance, so it causes people to say, hey, what is that? and then look closer.”
When asked if there were any hiccups, Shannon chuckles and says, “In order to mount the front wheel, I had to make my own tool. After following the original Honda factory Bomber assembly manual, I found that only after the front wheel is placed in the forks can the front axle then be tightened The manual actually says you have to find and grind down a 23mnm wrench on either side to make it fit…which I did.”
Checking over the Red Dragon’s appointment, we find that the factory issue “Elephant” horn is also original and correct while Shannon points out that the one-piece pipes may be ’67 issues as there’s speculation that the ’66 pipes were of a 2-piece design. He is still looking for the correct speedometer in kilometers per hour since the Red Dragons were produced for Euro sales (and Canada import). The early Fuji speedo on his bike, which Shannon completely rebuilt including new glass and bezel with the odometer numbers rolled back to zero, is in MPH, the usual speedo replacement made for bikes running on American streets. (Note: While Japanese domestic Black Bomber 450s featured turn-signals, the U.S. imports did not.)
Meticulous in its restoration, Shannon is also meticulous in pointing any differences, saying, “I went for the lower profile Honda bars because I thought they look better with the bike than the higher bars. And there’s some extra polish I added to a couple of the original brass accents, the nut on the petcock and another one of the front of the speedo drive.”
Summing up the Red Dragon’s resurrection, Shannon says, “This is how I pieced the story together. No doubt they’ll be emails which I welcome from around the world adding information. But the thing about these old bikes is yes, maybe a bit cumbersome and heavy, but they were also simple enough to wrench on yourself and everything shows a design effort, even to the passenger footpeg mounts. And the only plastic pieces are shock covers…otherwise a ton of chromed and painted metal. At the time Honda was making a statement with this bike, the 450 their biggest to date. It’s also fun to uncover some of the history surrounding a bike, after some 50 years, separating the myth, and finding and identifying a real Red Dragon… yep, well worth the effort.”

ACTION NEWS OF THE WEEK–LAS VEGAS (Sunday – July 8, 2018) – Sunday night, in front of an estimated 25,000 fans watching in-person from Las Vegas and more tuning in live on television across North America, action sports superstar Travis Pastrana celebrated Evel Knievel during the unprecedented HISTORY live event, “Evel Live.”
Produced in partnership with Nitro Circus, “Evel Live” saw Pastrana pay homage to Knievel’s legacy as he set out to recreate three of the American legend’s most iconic jumps.
Pastrana pushed the limits even further though, breaking Knievel’s famous car and Greyhound bus jump records before completing the epic Caesars Palace fountain jump that left Knievel grasping for his life 50 years ago. Shortly after Pastrana took a celebratory dive into the Caesars Palace fountains to cap off the night.
“I’m thrilled to have had this opportunity to honor Evel Knievel, whose guts and showmanship created the foundation for action sports,” Travis Pastrana said afterwards. “Evel pushed himself and flew further on a motorcycle than anyone thought possible.
So with this modern day tribute we wanted to bridge generations – from my parents generation who was inspired by Evel to the generation after me who may not know much about the original stunt men who paved the way – HISTORY and Nitro Circus wanted to show just how incredible his accomplishments were. To be able do that in Las Vegas and at Caesars Palace, where Evel’s legend was born, is so awesome.”

Developing: Stormy Daniels Arrested In Ohio While Performing–
Her attorney, Michael Avenatti, posted the matter via his Twitter account, saying that he believes the move is politically motivated and “reeks of desperation”.
Her attorney further commented: “She was arrested for allegedly allowing a customer to touch her while on stage in a non-sexual manner! Are you kidding me? They are devoting law enforcement resources to sting operations for this? There has to be higher priorities!!!”
“We will vehemently contest all charges,” Avenatti said. Her attorney spoke further with NBC News, saying that the arrest involved multiple undercover officers who were in the club while Daniels was performing. After her set, he says, a customer touched her and that’s when vice officers arrested her.
Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims she had sex with Trump in 2006, while he was married to Melania Trump. In 2016, on the eve of the presidential election, Michael Cohen, then Donald Trump’s personal attorney, used a shell company he had set up to pay Daniels $130,000 in exchange for her signing a nondisclosure agreement.
Daniels has said the agreement barred her from speaking publicly about her tryst with Trump and yet she did anyway? Can she even be trusted at this point?
Daniels has since then used every opportunity that has come her way to speak about the event and since then has become more popular than ever. Sure, it’s speculation, but it’s not hard to see why she would break such a contract whether or not the “tryst” happened.

Freedom of the Road
Is it righteous or are we toads.
Can we raise a fist for freedom
Or are our desires eliminated from the kingdom?
Can we blame Change on Life
And disavow human strife?
Should we know the taste of exhilaration
Or leave the grass pure for our nation
Can we compare an open valley
Against the trash in a city alley?
Are Fossils bad fuels
Or did it bring us hope and closer to schools.
Can a brother get straight answers,
Or will the control freaks become the masters?
Are we living through another Vietnam era?
But this time it’s the environmentalists against citizens and industry?

ANSWER FOR SUNDAY NEWS COMMENT BY ROSS–The query on Timeless Motor Company by Ross Apperley
With my expertise in Detective work having trained from reading many novels of Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, I believe – They are still in business –
http://www.timelessmotorcompany.com/home.html
DISCLAIMER on their website – Timeless Motorcycles are produced to a 1910 era technology. Due to liability issues, Timeless Motorcycles are sold as collectors’ items only and not to be used on streets or highways. Modern Department of Transportation Standards (DOT) are not applicable.
Well, sure as hell CARB, California rules might not be met. LOL.
They also have two new vintage motorcycles to their family, (Replicas of the 1911 Flying Merkel and the 1911 V-twin), you can now choose from five vintage motorcycle Replicas in their collection. The V-twin is beautiful.
Their whole line of Replica motorcycles can be purchased as a kit or fully assembled.
I think they undertake commissioned orders for a specific antique model you want re-created based on their mention of a custom Dave Catallini Timeless boardtrack racer featured in Hot Bike magazine with the logo on its tank “Hawley-Wood”.
With the bent and broken rules and laws in India I could totally legally ride these replicas on every road here with a license plate registered. But then I can’t afford these beauties at all. Unless my rich uncle Bandit is feeling generous or drunk enough to send me one. LOL.
Anyways, Bikernet should drop them an email because Bikernet.com is not mentioned in its Press section which has list of media coverage of that company from AMD, Cycle World, MCN, Thunder Press, etc.
http://www.timelessmotorcompany.com/press.html
My only advice to that company is that – their website mentions plenty of things about their bikes including starting prices but says absolutely nothing about how anyone could purchase one from their company.
I would recommend people to get in touch with this Master Crafter of Timeless Motorcycles on his Facebook Page – where he has mentioned a 1903 motorcycle he re-created.

Movie: The Incredibles 2–
Gotta love Pixar: Even though The Incredibles franchise is for the PG crowd, it isn’t afraid to be cerebral and wordy. (I mean … author Sarah Vowell is an Incredibles voice actor.)
While I’m not thrilled that Pixar—and movie studios in general—continue to invest in retreading franchises rather than creating more Coco-style originals, I still support The Incredibles 2‘s mission: a strong, female-led family saving the world locally and globally.
Much like I let it slide that The Incredibles 2 is a sequel, I’ll also let slide that the sentences are short and the language is unchallenging. It’s a kid movie! It’d be hard to hammer in the feel-good morality with SAT-level vocabulary.
That being said, we did find some pretty awesome literary devices in this pretty awesome film …
alliteration: “Over Dusseldorf, Doozles are dozing…”
wordplay: Screenslaver (a character’s name)
callback: Dash Parr: “Wait, I thought you renounced superheroes.” Violet Parr: “Well, I renounce my renouncement!”
rhetorical question: Violet Parr: “So, are we going to talk about it?” Bob Parr: “What?” Violet Parr: “The elephant in the room.”

CAVE RESCUE REPORT–‘A beautiful moment’ in Thailand
The world received good news from Thailand this morning. After being stranded in a cave for more than two weeks, 12 young boys and their soccer coach were successfully rescued in a difficult mission. “On behalf of the United States, congratulations to the Thai Navy SEALs and all on the successful rescue,” President Trump tweeted.
American personnel helped stage equipment, prepared the first three chambers of the cave system for safe passage, assisted in transporting the soccer team evacuees through the cave system, and are providing medical personnel and other technical assistance as needed. U.S. coordination with the Thai military, Thai government, and other entities was extremely positive and effective, according to Department of Defense officials.

By P Gosselin on 7. July 2018
German climate and weather analyst “Schneefan” (Snow Fan) here writes a summary of the first half of 2018 thus far. All data show that the surface temperature of the globe has been cooling strongly over the past months and polar ice mass growing.
He writes that in the first half of this year we have seen weak solar activity and La Nina conditions acting to cool the globe’s surface. Moreover Arctic and Antarctic ice mass have grown in comparison to the previous years.

COUNCIL OF CLUBS REPORT–The Imaginary War Between MC’s And the Government
The National Council of Clubs (NCOC), dedicated to protecting the legal and political interests of motorcycle clubs coast-to-coast, is extremely concerned about an imaginary war between motorcycle clubs and the government, created in the minds of some law enforcement and government prosecutors, playing itself out in courthouses across America.
This ideology of war has followed us to the steps of the criminal justice system, where visibly draconian security measures have been implemented based on unsubstantiated and ambiguous sources, even though there have been no validated examples of motorcycle clubs storming courthouses during a trial.
A topical example reinforcing such irresponsible claims has been recently memorialized in a Texas District Attorney’s press release relating to the supposed and constant threat of violent retaliation that prosecutors face during biker trials.
Despite the absurdity of the claim that any motorcycle club would storm a courthouse or target prosecutors with violence, there are no consequences for these falsehoods meant only to perpetuate fear and reinforce false narratives about 1% motorcycle clubs. And, of course, these false threats are used to justify excessive security measures during biker trials.
This fear-based tactic has real implications. Inside the courtroom, juries will be biased against biker defendants because of the perception that their safety is in jeopardy. Outside the courtroom, law enforcement will increasingly treat those exercising the constitutional liberties of association and expression as a direct violent threat based on inaccurate information and training.
Incidents of motorcycle profiling and selective enforcement of the law will likely continue at epidemic levels until a more accurate narrative is reported by the media, both grassroots and mainstream.
Texas – The Recent Battleground
Sharon Wilson, the Tarrant County District Attorney, issued a press release on June 28, 2018 (below) reporting that Assistant District Attorney Pamela Boggess has been named “2018 Prosecutor Of The Year” by the Texas Gang Investigators Association for the successful prosecution of Ft. Worth Bandido Howard “Drifter” Baker, convicted last year of directing a criminal organization.
Without debating the merits of Drifter’s prosecution, or the sufficiency of his legal counsel, the NCOC believes that the Tarrant County District Attorney’s press release further perpetuates baseless claims only intended to sensationalize and prejudice public perception against defendants and motorcycle clubs generally. Boggess is being recognized not only for a successful prosecution, but also for being successful under the constant threat of gang retaliation, a theatrical claim at best. The Press Release states:
“Prosecutors were the target of violent threats from gang sources throughout their handling of the case, and Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn maintained an unprecedented lockdown of the courthouse, including deputies positioned on the rooftops, for the duration of the trial.”….”These gang members rely on intimidation tactics, but they find out quickly they’ve met their match in Pam Boggess.”
What gang sources? What information did these sources provide? Why has no one been arrested or prosecuted for these threats? Unfortunately, this “made for Hollywood” scenario in Ft. Worth is NOT an anomaly. Similar incidents in Waco and San Antonio courthouses involving enhanced security measures based on fictitious threats, with the same unanswered questions, have been widely publicized in the media.
Imaginary Threats in Waco and San Antonio
In fact, NCOC participants were present during both trials and witnessed firsthand the ridiculous security measures employed, again based on unsubstantiated claims. In Waco, the Sheriff’s Office constructed a fence around the entire courthouse and paid hundreds of thousands for extra security at the courthouse, and for personal security for prosecutors away from the courthouse. In San Antonio, a person was required to go through two metal detectors and have their ID photographed before they could enter the courtroom and sit in designated seats. Marshals surrounded the defendants in court, even when the jury was present.
The idea of using a tragic incident, whether it be a trial or a shooting, to advance a campaign of fear and draconian security, is not a new one. And it’s particularly not new in Texas.
An Example Outside The Courthouse- Sgt. Swanton’s Fairytale Fiction
Years before the mistrial in the first Waco prosecution of Dallas Bandido Jake Carrizal, Sgt. Swanton of the Waco Police Department declared on national TV, as nearly 200 people were rounded-up to ultimately be arrested on generic fill-in the blank arrest warrants based solely on their associations, that they had received credible threats that bikers had “green-lit” law enforcement and were coming to Waco to retaliate. 1 Immediately following the incident at Twin peaks Waco law enforcement issued a statement warning “bikers to stay off the streets because it was difficult to distinguish between law-abiding riders and those bent on criminality.” The local Harley Davidson dealership was even closed. 2 The Federal Board of Prisons, the Texas Border Intelligence Agency, and the Texas Department of Public Safety all issued bulletins based on these reports about retaliation. 3 But in the end, after the national spotlight had disappeared, authorities admitted that none of the threats of retaliation were found valid or true.
Law enforcement quietly acknowledged, but failed to emphasize, that these reports were based on completely unsubstantiated information provided by an unnamed informant. 4 Additionally, the alleged
informant lost all credibility and believability by naming a non-existent club called the “Black Widows” as the source of the information. “The Black Widows Motorcycle Club, while it might carry a looming scary name, is actually the fictitious group from a Clint Eastwood movie “Every Which Way But Loose“. There is no actual Bike Gang called “The Black Widows” anywhere in the South or Southwest.” 5
Furthermore, NCOC participants observed firsthand Waco PD and Texas DPS officers admitting under oath during the Carrizal trial that threats reported by Swanton in 2015 turned out to be false and unsubstantiated. But even after the Waco PD’s original story started to fall apart, most of the media that originally swallowed Swanton’s narrative without question, never doing their own investigation or fact checking, never went back to correct the record even though many were present during this testimony.
After the smoke and mirrors are removed, no valid threat of violence from motorcycle clubs against law enforcement or government authorities exists. An NCOC participant from Nevada with vast trial experience, including trials with excessive security issues, confirms that authorities have zero historical basis when he writes, “We have asked judges or prosecutors to find a biker trial where they have had court issues, and they cannot.” But the headlines have already done their perceptual damage. The outlaw image is simply too easy to exploit, too easy to sensationalize, and too easily manipulated to generate real fear. Fear in the eyes of jurors, law enforcement, the general public, and even other motorcyclists.
The Media’s Responsibility
The NCOC believes that public officials and law enforcement should be challenged by the media when they feed reporters sensationalized rhetoric. The media should demand an answer to these questions before irresponsible and one-sided messaging is used to generate fear and hysteria that has tangibly negative impacts on motorcycle clubs and their members. The imaginary threats faced by law enforcement do not exist. But the ability to influence juries, justify draconian security on the taxpayer’s dime, and perpetuate law enforcement profiling and abuse is very real.
Until that happens, grassroots media unconstrained by institutional control must continue to challenge mainstream media with balanced and investigative reporting. Reducing the use of one-sided media reports that reinforce stereotypes of danger reduces bias, and the probability of treating bikers as criminals, Media that counters stereotypes can reduce perceptions of danger. There is even evidence that “counter-stereotypic information can reduce or even eliminate bias.” (*See JOSHUA CORRELL from the University of Chicago, The influence of stereotypes on decisions to shoot, Eur. J. Soc. Psychol. 37, 1102–1117 (2007))
Balanced media that highlights the positive contributions and attributes of the motorcycling community directly impacts the general perception that all bikers are dangerous. Beyond the inherent value of truth, reducing perceptions of danger can directly reduce mistakes made by police when dealing with bikers.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL WIDE OPEN–During a commercial airline flight an experienced Air Force Pilot was seated next to a young mother with a babe in arms. When the baby began crying during the descent for landing, the mother began nursing the infant as discreetly as possible in limited space
.The U.S. Air Force Officer pretended not to notice anything, and, upon disembarking, he gallantly offered his assistance to help with the various baby-related items.
When the young mother expressed her gratitude, the pilot responded, “that’s a good looking baby, and he sure was hungry!”
Somewhat embarrassed, the mother explained that her pediatrician said that the time spent on her breast would help alleviate the pressure in the baby’s ears.
The Air Force Pilot sadly shook his head, and in true pilot fashion exclaimed, “And all these years, I’ve been chewing gum!”

GEORGE CLOONEY INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT--OLBIA, Sardinia — Actor George Clooney slammed his motorbike into an oncoming car that turned suddenly into his lane Tuesday and was thrown several meters (yards) in the air on the Italian island of Sardinia, according to video of the crash.
“He is recovering at his home and will be fine,” Clooney spokesman Stan Rosenfield told The Associated Press in an email.
Surveillance video of the crash, apparently taken by a fixed security video, was obtained late Tuesday by the newspaper Corriere della Sera. It shows a blue Mercedes veering into oncoming traffic apparently to turn into a residential compound near Olbia. The video shows what is reported as Clooney’s scooter crashing into the car while another scooter alongside him manages to veer around it.
Ambulance personnel tend to a man lying on the ground, later identified as actor George Clooney, after being involved in a scooter accident in the near Olbia, on the Sardinia island, Italy, Tuesday, July 10, 2018. Actor George Clooney was taken to the hospital in Sardinia on Tuesday and released after being involved in an accident while riding his motor scooter, hospital officials said. “He is recovering at his home and will be fine,” spokesman Stan Rosenfield told The Associated Press in an email.

ROGUE’S NATURE WARNING FOR SUMMER RIDING–Bear attacks on human are rare, despite what this photo and dramatic news reports say.
Visitors to the backwoods of Alaska are more apt to die from bee stings and snake bites than they are to be mauls by a bear, yet we fear bears more than bees and snakes.
Humans have a primal fear of being eaten by a wild animal, like a bear. This may be an involuntary fear left over from our pioneer days.
Still, anytime we venture into the natural habitat of a wild animal, especially an apex predator, we need to be on alert and avoid any sort of behavior that could provoke an attack…perhaps, riding a bike.

VA MEDICAL CENTER NURSE INDICTED– Arraigned for Allegedly Tampering With and Stealing Prescription Opioids
PROVIDENCE – A nurse employed at the Providence VA Medical Center was arraigned and pled not guilty today in U.S. District Court in Providence to a federal grand jury indictment charging him with stealing liquid opioids for his own personal use and replacing them with saline.
Jared Scott, 34, of West Warwick, was indicted on June 28, 2018, on one count each of tampering with consumer products and acquiring a controlled substance by deception and subterfuge.
Scott was released on unsecured bond following his arraignment before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond.
According to information presented to the court, Scott, as a Providence VA Medical Center nurse, had access to vials of liquid opioids for patient use. Scott would access the vials, often for patients that were not his, remove vials of the drug for his own personal use, and leave behind vials filled with saline.
The indictment and arraignment of Jared Scott are announced by United States Attorney Stephen G. Dambruch; Sean J. Smith, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General; and Jeffrey J. Ebersole, Resident Agent in Charge of the United States Food and Drug Administration Office of Criminal Investigations.
An indictment is merely an allegation and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Tampering with a consumer product is punishable by statutory penalties of up to 10 years in federal prison, 3 years supervised release and a fine of $250,000. Obtaining a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, deception and subterfuge is punishable by statutory penalties of up to 4 years in federal prison, 1 year supervised release and a fine of $250,000.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Terrence P. Donnelly.
The matter was investigated by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General and the United States Food and Drug Administration Office of Criminal Investigations.

A while back, when I was considerably younger, I picked up a lovely date at her parents’ home.
I’d scraped together some money to take her to a fancy restaurant.
She ordered the most expensive items on the menu. Shrimp cocktail, Lobster Patron and Champagne.
I asked her, “Does your mother feed you like that when you eat at home?”
“No,” she replied. “but my mother’s not expecting a blow job and a piece of ass tonight.”
I said “Would you care for dessert?”

Now that our newcomers have been formally welcomed into the Jacobs Fanily (yes, I said FANily beacuse we consider you part of the family), I’d like to get right to the point of this email.
Most of you probably remember Scott’s 2017 Sturgis painting, “The Riding’s on the Wall”. When this piece came out, it was like a feeding frenzy to collect it.
Everyone was in awe over its nostalgia that it sold out in FIVE days!
Due to popular demand, we’ve come out with a Tin Sign just in time for Summer!
Here’s Scott signing the first Tin fresh out of the box!

RIDING FOR WARRIORS 4th ANNUAL MOTORCYCLE RIDE RAISES MORE THAN $30,000 DOLLARS FOR HOPE FOR THE WARRIORS–
Air Force and Army veterans raises money to support A Warrior’s Wish program for wounded veterans

The fourth annual Riding For Warriors recently wrapped its 17-day motorcycle journey raising more than $30,000 for Hope For The Warriors and its A Warrior’s Wish program.
Celebrating 11 years of service, Hope For The Warriors is a national nonprofit dedicated to restoring a sense of self, family, and hope for veterans, service members and military families.
Through its first established program, A Warrior’s Wish, Hope For The Warriors fulfills a desire for a better quality-of-life or supports a quest for gratifying endeavors for those who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty.
For the fourth year, the ride was led by Air Force veteran Michael Nehlsen and sponsored by Union, New Jersey-based Hillmann Consulting. Joining Nehlsen again this year on the more than 4,500 mile trip was New Jersey-native and Army veteran, Jeff Molesko.
While in North Carolina, the veterans visited Hope For The Warriors staff at Camp Lejeune and toured the Wounded Warrior Battalion East. In addition, they visited the No Man Left Behind statue to honor those who have served and those that continue to do so by reading names submitted by ride supporters, Hope For The Warriors staff and prior A Warrior’s Wish recipients.
“Over the past four years, Riding For Warriors has been incredibly important to me both personally and professionally,” said Nehlsen. “It has given me, and Hillmann Consulting, the opportunity to be part of the Hope For The Warriors family while making a meaningful contribution to the A Warrior’s Wish program.
“This annual ride has become our way of us saying ‘thank you’ to veterans and honoring the price they have paid for our freedom. I often think of the No Man Left Behind statute and I can only hope that the veterans we have helped through Riding For Warriors know that their service to our country has not gone unnoticed and is greatly appreciated,” added Nehlsen.
In four years, Nehlsen’s annual ride has raised more than $120,000 for A Warrior’s Wish providing wounded veterans with woodworking and farm equipment, family trips, a saw mill, a horse trailer, a bass boat, two road bicycles and more.
“You can always count on veterans continuing to serve their fellow veterans and that’s just what Mike and Jeff continue to do year-after-year,” said Robin Kelleher, co-founder and president of Hope For The Warriors. “They truly understand the sacrifice and service of those who serve in the United States military and believe in the A Warrior’s Wish program and its mission to fulfill wishes for those who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty.”
Key sponsors for the Ride For Warriors include: Sal DiLorenzo and Bill Nelson in memory of his fallen fellow Vietnam infantryman John F. Ward.

THAT’S NOT ALL—Tomorrow we will launch a new SmokeOut 19 report. Then I will surprise Cantina members with the latest Bandit’s Cantina Episode.
We have a couple of cool Bike Features headed your way and a history piece from Tim Remus on Triumphs.
I bought this leather tank bra from Mil Blair. It’s from the ‘20s in Europe. It’s emblazoned with rally badges and awards. Dr. Hamster looked down at them and discovered most were within 20 miles of his home in Germany. Amazing.
Mil is still selling his 1950 Panhead, which was featured on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1951. It’s an amazing bike. Drop me a line if you’re a serious buyer.
Now, I must dive back into the shop and fire up the welders. I’ve got shit to do.
Ride Free forever,

SMOKE-OUT 19 June 15–16 2018
It was that time of year again when the SMOKEOUT rolls into Rockingham North Carolina like a plaque of straight pipes against the humid lands. My son Zach and myself rode down; we even had a chase vehicle, my wife Vicki and our good friend Kris. The temperature was soaring into mid to upper 90s!!!! Sizzling to say the least!
I always look forward to the SMOKEOUT. This year was a very special one for me. Edge contacted me about being a Bikernet bike show judge! I would pick a bike to be featured on BIKERNET! For me this was a GREAT honor! I think highly of Bandit. He’s always been my mentor, although he lives with a redhead in a bottle of whiskey.
We rolled into Rockingham around 10:30 am Saturday morning. It was already hot. The crowds started to gather at the variety of venues, from the drag strip to the bike shows and vendor village. I had about 3 hours to kill before the judges’ meeting, so I checked out vendors and the myriad of parked bikes scattered around the massive raceway complex. There were some amazing bikes to see. Flatheads, Knuckleheads, Shovelheads, Evos, and even twin cams and a few Indians sprinkled in along the way.
Unlike the Born Free Chopper Event on the West Coast, the SmokeOut has few rules. You can camp, wear your colors, park anywhere on the ground, walk around naked, paint naked women, dance, drink and do the hutchie coo, you name it.
The painted ladies booth is always a stop on the walk around. Amazing what can be done with body paint! The bands set up and fired up and the stage area quickly became congested.
SMOKE-OUT 19 would prove to be different, no Horse magazine participation. The Horse ran afoul of bad business, bad economy and bad blood. But different situation would prove not to be a bad thing. Edge the commander of the SMOKE-OUT and his crew did an outstanding job organizing and putting this event together as usual. A controlling cloud lifted from the grounds and smiles seemed broader, more sincere and lest restricted. They gleamed as a local did a wheelie between booths.
As the clock ticked down to 1:30 pm I headed to the bike show area for the judges meeting. Jeff “the Prince” Najar organized the Garage built bike show. He did a great job with his Biker Pros history of show organization, and it went off without a hitch.
There were close to 60 bikes entered in the show. The competition was as hot as the weather! It took me 2 hours and 45 minutes to pick the BIKERNET winner. I narrowed it down to three. A slick silver Sportster from Ohio, a Speed King Shovelhead and a ‘41 Knucklehead. I went back and forth between these three contenders numerous times.
Finally I picked the ‘41 Knucklehead owned by Randall Shaffer. The bike has a great father and son story behind it, very fitting since it was fathers day weekend! There were nine awards presented by nine magazine publications. Stay tuned to BIKERNET for the feature on the garage, family-built ‘41 Knucklehead!
A little side story: My wife, Vicki and Kris were my photographers. We were are all at the bike show tent sharing notes and plans for the afternoon and Vicki disappeared? Kris and I slave away in the heat sweating our asses off and still no Vicki? Vicki strolls in right when we finish and we come to find out she went back to the hotel and laid out at the pool??? Thanks Vicki!
The Smoke Out is way more than a motorcycle event. Edge has a mantra to have two or more events or contest happening throughout each day. There are over four shows, wet-T-shirt contests, Tattoo contests, painted lady contests, drag racing all day, Long Road Rides, Cross Country Rides, mini-bike races, bands, award ceremonies, cherries marinated in white lightening, corn on the cob, and the action never stops. The party doesn’t end at a designated time with security guards leading you to the gates. This puppy runs all night long.
Well another SMOKEOUT is in the books and it was definitely one of the best! I am looking forward to next year’s SMOKEOUT 20, the massive celebration of the 20th anniversary of the wildest event on the planet, maybe the galaxy. There are already secret meetings underway for making highly classified plans and stunning activities for next year! If you have never attended the original SMOKEOUT, the 20th will be the one to attend!
In closing I would like to thank Bandit and Edge for giving me the opportunity to be a bike show judge. I had a blast, hopefully I will get asked to do it again?
Until next time, RIDE!
