Indian Motorcycle Dominates The Podium At New York Short Track
By Bikernet | | General Posts
Indian Motorcycle Racing and its championship-winning Scout FTR750 continued its unbelievable season at the New York Short Track by securing yet another podium sweep. Through 11 races, Indian Motorcycle Wrecking Crew riders and privateers have combined for a total of eight all-Scout FTR750 podiums. The win marked Jared Mees’ ninth of the season and second consecutive year of hitting a grand slam on the Scout FTR750. Completing the podium sweep were Indian Motorcycle privateer Kenny Coolbeth Jr. (Nila Racing, Columbia Avionics, Bell, TCX Boots, Vanson) and Wrecking Crew rider Brad Baker, who finished second and third, respectively.
The New York Short Track Main started with Baker in the number one spot. Mees battled Baker through the first 10 laps, ultimately making the pass and stretching his lead through the remainder of the Main. Coolbeth continued his fight, passing riders to reach third. Coolbeth didn’t let up, though, as he made a pass on Baker in the final lap to secure second and his fifth top-five finish of the season. The third-place finish was Baker’s eighth top-five finish and third podium of the season.
“It’s incredible to have this race complete the grand slam this season. It’s a prime example of the support I have with my crew,” said Mees. “We worked through a lot, and when it mattered most they had my Scout FTR750 fully dialed for the Main Event.”
Joining Mees, Coolbeth and Baker as top finishes were Indian Motorcycle privateers Davis Fisher (Double D Performance, Bob Lanphere, Beaverton Motorcycles, RMR, Parkinson), Henry Wiles (Bandit Industries, Wilco Racing, Willy Built, Mad Dog), and Briar Bauman (Zanotti Racing, Roof Systems, Western Powersports, Hard), who placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, aboard their Scout FTR750.
“It’s awesome to see Mees get his second career in-season grand slam,” said Gary Gray, Vice President – Racing, Technology & Service for Indian Motorcycle. “He’s earned himself a healthy lead in the points standings, but there’s still some big-time tracks coming up on the schedule, so it’ll be exciting to see how he and the other riders perform.”
Through 11 races, Mees continues to control the leaderboard with 245 points, while Wiles ranks second with 167 points and Baker in third with 147 points. Jeffrey Carver Jr. (129) and Coolbeth (125) are fourth and fifth, while Bauman (117), Chad Cose (106), Fisher (103) and Bryan Smith (99) rank sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth.
Smith, who did not attempt to start Semi 1, will go in for surgery on Wednesday, July 11, to repair screws that came loose in the leg he broke earlier this season at the Texas Half-Mile. Smith is targeting a return for the next American Flat Track race, The Buffalo Chip TT on August 5.
Next up, Mees, Baker and Cose will join four other American Flat Track riders and travel overseas to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England from July 12-15. The four-day celebration of motorsports history, design and technical achievement will further introduce the Indian Motorcycle riders and the Scout FTR750 to a global fan base.
Following the Goodwood Festival, select Indian Motorcycle riders will stop in Minneapolis for X-Games on Sunday, July 22. The American Flat Track season will continue its season on August 5 at The Buffalo Chip TT in Sturgis, South Dakota, followed by a quick turnaround with the Black Hills Half-Mile in Rapid City on August 7.

Biker Culture – “A Poetry in Motion”
by Ujjwal Dey
Diane Wakoski describes biker life as “… just being so joyfully alive/ Just letting the blood take its own course/ In intact vessels/ In veins…/ – the motorcyclist riding along the highway/ Independent/ Alone”.
Shirley Dent says, “There is precise science in the recklessness of both riding a bike and writing a poem. A good Biker Poet is taking life on, in all its mad, fast-paced complexity, and turning out something that is precise, clear, true.”
Lucinda Williams describes, “The perfect man? A poet on a motorcycle. You know, the kind who lives on the edge, the free spirit. But he’s also gotta have the soul of a poet and a brilliant mind. So, you know, good luck.”

Biker Culture – “A Poetry in Motion”
By Ujjwal Dey | | General Posts
Biker poetry is a movement of poetry that grew out of the predominantly American lifestyle of the Biker and Motorcycle clubs following World War II. Biker lifestyle is what refers to the changes in society through what was Biker Culture.
Famous Authors such as Hunter S. Thompson are credited with writing biker poetry, playing no small part in the genus by making biker culture well-known to average citizens with his Hells Angels novel. It introduced a literary movement that focused on the biker culture when he released the first novel about bikers for non-biker readers of books – bringing biker culture into mainstream media. Biker Magazines came much later.
Some say Biker Poetry came into mainstream publishing focus on a farm in Colorado in 1975, which was attended by an assortment of bikers and hippies and a young Hunter S. Thompson and Sky. Since then, biker poetry is a genre getting a revival while the beatnik poetry that shaped them are still etched in our memories.
Biker poetry often embraces form, and may include fixed verse, free verse, folk song, concrete poetry, poetry slam and even “Baiku”, a form of Haiku.
Notable biker poets include Diane Wakoski, who authored a collection known as The Motorcycle Betrayal Poems. Writers such as Colorado T. Sky and K Peddlar Bridges work with experimental poetry, however the biker genre tends to work with form, especially rhyming verse.
Groups such as The Highway Poets Motorcycle Club have an international membership. The inspiration for HPMC was on a farm called Baldspot near Mullen, Colorado – with all the usual suspects combining hippies, locals, bikers were present. James T Sky later met up with beatnik legend Allen Ginsberg who said that the Highway Poets MC could be what Beat Poets were for his generation.
Only in 1990, The Highway Poets Motorcycle Club was formally officially founded and named at Cambridge, MA. Since 2002, they have grown in international membership widely.
The Biker Poem genre was a regular feature in many motorcycle magazines and motorcycle rallies through the 1970s.
Biker Poetry is similar to cowboy poetry in that it can reflect a romantic American lifestyle. Verse will often focus on the loneliness or camaraderie associated with motorcycling, the day-to-day affairs of maintenance on the motorcycle, personal problems within a family that lives a biker lifestyle as well as substance abuse and its relation to bikers.
Other popular themes include “the freedom of the road”, outlaw clubs, interactions with cars and trucks (also referred to as ‘cages’), biker values and practices, and the conflicts and tragedies associated with highway incidents.
Biker poets often use pseudonyms. These include “The Holy Ranger” (Dr. Martin Jack Rosenblum), “Wild Bill, the Alaskan Biker Poet” (William B Rogers), “Ironhorse Writer” (Laurence P. Scerri), “Gypsypashn” (Betsy Lister), “Biker Jer” (Jerry Sawinski), “Renegade” (K. Randall Ball) and “Joe Go” (Jose Gouveia).
The use of pseudonyms is mentioned by qualified anthropologist Daniel Wolf in his book published by University of Toronto Press. His research bridged the gap between image and reality by becoming an insider. He suggests that – the image of the outlaw biker is widely recognized in North American society but the reality is only known to insiders.
Daniel R. Wolf teaches anthropology at the University of Prince Edward Island. His Biker pseudonym was “Coyote.” As a member of Rebels MC he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with 20 fellow members at a parking lot to brawl with 40 members of the Canadian Airborne Regiment, elite paratroop fighting force. Just to defend their social territory, which was a bar called Kingsway Motor Inn. Coyote was concerned his PhD dissertation would fail by being absent at University if the fight led to him being in a prison.
Daniel R. Wolf is now a psychological anthropologist who has worked at the University of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, among other gigs. He is the only anthropologist ever to choose an outlaw motorcycle club as the topic of his doctoral study. Coyote — the pseudonym given to him by his Rebels brothers was because he wore a coyote pelt over his helmet.
Wolf was brought up on the streets of a lower-class neighborhood. Instead of being shot down like his childhood best friend, he worked in meat-packing plants for thirteen hours a day and put himself through university. He also bought himself a British-made Norton motorcycle. He later switched to a 1955 Harley-Davidson Panhead and then a ’72 Electraglide.
While other PhD candidates itched to study Maori tribesmen, Wolf’s love of motorcycles and his life background drew him to the “Harley tribe.” His resulting dissertation was the first of its kind. The biker culture had never been ethnographically explored.
Wolf eventually turned it into a book, The Rebels, which reads like a cross between Hunter Thompson’s Hell’s Angels and Lionel Tiger’s Men in Groups.
Despite being outnumbered 40 to 23, the Rebels prevailed over the Airborne that day. The paratroopers came with nunchaku, a steel bar attached to a chain, a blackjack, a baseball bat, and more. A few Rebels had chains and tire irons, but most were unarmed. One wielded an old motorcycle battery. But the Rebels attacked together, “with the viciousness of cornered animals,” in Wolf/Coyote’s words.
The Airborne, soldiers trained in unarmed combat, weaponry, and riot control, dispersed when they saw a number of their fellows being beaten. Said Wolf: “They had not yet endured and shared enough to cement those ties of comradeship that resulted in members presuming, and acting upon, a principle of self-sacrifice. The Airborne may have been the finest in discipline, but they had not yet learned to look out for each other under fire” — thus proving biker brotherhood is worthy of anthropological research and reading.

“The perfect man? A poet on a motorcycle. You know, the kind who lives on the edge, the free spirit. But he’s also gotta have the soul of a poet and a brilliant mind. So, you know, good luck.” ~ Lucinda Williams
Music also welcomed Biker Culture. Lucinda Williams is a critically acclaimed Country Music Singer and Songwriter. She has won three Grammy Awards and influenced many songwriters.
Bob Seger is also a wonderful songwriter who is adored for his “life on the road” songs such as “Turn The Page” with the words –
In 2012, MarySusan Williams- Migneault founded the organisation – “Road Scribes of America”. The organization has a Charter and Mission to promote Biker Poetry but also foster creativity of any Biker member whether Scribe, Poet, Photographer, Minstrel, Musician, or Creative Artist of the literary or art community. Road Scribes of America is not associated to any outside agency, club, or organization. It is a subsidiary of Roadhousepress.
Their website: http://roadscribesofamericatm.com/
Though a serious poet, “Wild Bill” Rogers in his book “Bikers Got Culture! Poetry for the discerning biker!” takes readers into the humorous side of a biker lifestyle that is as unique to America as the “Cowboy” or “Harley-Davidson” and a culture that is largely misunderstood.
It will revive your memories of JJ Solari reciting poetry in the Easyriders Studio.
“Rubber Side Down” – is a wonderful anthology of poetry, essays and photography about the biker community.
Contributors to “Rubber Side Down” book include motorcyclist Jose “JoeGo” Gouveia head of the “Highway Poets Motorcycle Club”, Allen Ginsberg, Thom Gunn, Diane Wakoski, and a host of writers from the motorcycle press, including Dr. Martin Jack Rosenblum a biker culture historian with many speculating if he was named by Harley-Davidson company as their Poet Laureate or not, Susan Buck, and K. Peddlar Bridges. In addition, a special photo section has been provided by celebrated motorcycle photographer Michael Lichter.
“The Motorcycle Betrayal Poems” by Diane Wakoski describes biker life as “… just being so joyfully alive/ Just letting the blood take its own course/ In intact vessels/ In veins…/ – the motorcyclist riding along the highway/ Independent/ Alone”.
Shirley Dent is communications director for the Institute of Ideas, and development editor of Culture Wars, the institute’s reviews website. In her Guardian newspaper column she says, “There is precise science in the recklessness of both riding a bike and writing a poem. A good Biker Poet is taking life on, in all its mad, fast-paced complexity, and turning out something that is precise, clear, true.”
She is referencing Hunter S Thompson who in his classic essay “The Song of the Sausage Creature” stated that, “But when we ride very fast motorcycles, we ride with immaculate sanity”.
You can read the wild crazy essay “The Song of the Sausage Creature” here – it mentions the Ducati 900 and Vincent Black Shadow with his typical trademark Gonzo journalism.
http://www.latexnet.org/~csmith/sausage.html
“Vincent Black Shadow which would outrun an F-86 jet fighter was like a bullet that went straight; the Ducati is like the magic bullet in Dallas that went sideways and hit JFK and the Governor of Texas at the same time.” – Hunter S. Thompson
Shirley Dent says, “Motorbike and Poem defy the physical and scorn utilitarian demands. SUVs and car manuals get you from A to B. As Frederick Seidel knows, the motorbike and poem take you out of yourself.” (Frederick Seidel is a widely published Poet, winner of the Lamont Prize and the 1980 National Book Critics Circle Award.)
Fans of Poetry are inspired and adopting the Biker Culture and Biker Poetry. One fan from North Yorkshire, United Kingdom describes himself as:
“I’m husband, father, writer, published poet, motorcyclist, novice horse rider, limited chef and mediocre musician, one-time art curator and collector of bohemians. I’m a Palace fan in exile, Gulliver with one foot in the north and the other in the capital, an opinionated bastard and occasional drunk, an actor without a stage and a member of the audience, a rocket scientist and a fool. Where convention goes I’ll generally walk the opposite path, preferring Outside, slipping under Milk Wood, hightailing it to Neverland on a Ducati with Wendy riding pillion following Peter pulling wheelies, there to live among the pirates and eat crocodile stew.”
One American Biker took a popular Biker Poem published in Easyriders magazine published in the 1970s and sang it as a song with a guitar solo. You can watch it on YouTube here:
“Road Rash Blues” a Poem by Gypsy, Converted Into A Song
https://youtu.be/SheJMleKtug
Phil Cromer aka “Gypsy” is the author of “Whispers in the Wind” a compilation of his work such as this Biker Poem.
Robert M Pirsig enlisted in the United States Army at age 18 years in 1946 and was stationed in South Korea until 1948. He was an incredible student since childhood with an IQ of 170. He attended Banaras Hindu University in India, to study Eastern philosophy and culture.
In his philosophical book ” Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values” (1974), he described the central character, thought to represent himself, as being far from a typical student. The book develops around Pirsig’s exploration into the nature of “Quality”.
The book in a first-person narrative based on a 17-day motorcycle trip he and his young son Chris took from Minneapolis to San Francisco, is an exploration of the underlying metaphysics of Western culture. This book is punctuated by numerous philosophical discussions, on topics including epistemology, ethical emotivism and the philosophy of science.
Pirsig represented the biker culture without the intent to do so and without realizing it. Because he was basically writing about feeling like an outsider who did not like the society’s conformity and un-questioned acceptance of all things considered normal. His work is known as one of the best in American philosophy and it represents the fight for “Freedom” by the Bikers and their Biker Brotherhood.
Robert M. Pirsig states – “The study of the art of motorcycle maintenance is really a miniature study of the art of rationality itself. Working on a motorcycle, working well, caring, is to become part of a process, to achieve an inner peace of mind. The motorcycle is primarily a mental phenomenon.”
Ed Pliska AKA “Sorez the Scribe” – a veteran of Biker Poetry starts his poem titled “Man Of The Cloth” with the words that all men recognize as the eternal search for truth, meaning of life, purpose of existence –
– and then Sorez ends this poem with the defining words –
You can read some good “Sorez the Scribe” Biker Poetry here:

The body and mind still come together today in motorcycling – whether it is to watch out for city roads with its many perils or a long empty stretch of U.S. Route 50, The Loneliest Road in America.
Give it some thought when you ride your motorcycle next time. Give it poetry. Give it hell. Stay on the saddle, ride on in all weather, be a man free of anything except the “Self”.

Rolling thru the Garden State, one has to venture out to a place where the roots of a local biker were planted, watered, and survived for the past 48+ years. While Jersey soil is rich in nutrients and hell it doesn’t get the name the Garden State for nothing, this place is rich in motorcycle culture and old iron. It’s definitely a one of a kind place that has survived the evolution of the H-D kingdom that now graces every prominent exit on every mile of interstate (ok, well not really every mile, LOL, but close!).

4th OF JULY BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS MADNESS for July 5, 2018
By Bandit | | General Posts
Hey,
I had a strange day yesterday. My mission was pure creativity, to come up with an artistic notion for the Flying Piston Charity Builder’s Breakfast in Sturgis about a month away.
I was burning daylight with no concept, materials and limited time. It was 4th of July and my mind spun with my plans for getting on the road to Sturgis, which would cut my deadline back for making a metal piece and shipping it, or hauling it to Sturgis.
I went to the Long Beach VA for a healing hands treatment Tuesday and struggled trying for focus. My son wants me to write a book about my life and when I think about all the Bandit shit I’ve done and the renegades I’ve known, my head spins.
But there’s something I tell myself when I’m feeling down or stressed, and it always works, actually two things. First, ya gotta remember your thoughts are just that, “Thoughts.” So tell yourself, “Wow, that was an interesting thought. That’s all it was.”
And I remind myself, “I’m too strong to let shit bother me!” Works every time. At the end to the day I had something sorta amazing coming together. It’s something I’ve never done before. Then Jeremiah showed up with Ceviche, avocados, and marinated Chicken. I poured a glass of whiskey and the party started. We avoided the crowds and headed to the headquarters roof with the Redhead and his girlfriend Honor (I said her last name should be Everything) for the most amazing fireworks show on the planet.
I’ll show you more at the conclusion of the news.

Wherein a guy from Hawaii tries to make saving the environment attractive to men by starting a motorcycle club
There’s this guy named Scott Cooney. He’s the founder and CEO of a media company that includes the website Clean Technica, which is dedicated (among other things) to spreading the word about clean energy.
Not too long ago, Cooney decided that, in an effort to get men around the world more involved in saving the environment, he’d start a very manly motorcycle gang in which all the members ride electric bikes.
CHECK OUT: 2018 Zero SR – A Commuter’s Dream Bike
“Sometimes, men just need to know that fighting climate change can also kick serious ass,” said Cooney.
Ah, huh. HUH. Okay, so, how does he plan to do such a thing? Well, Cooney and a coalition of “sustainability business leaders” from Hawaii got together and drafted a request for proposal. The coalition, which includes both Clean Technica and The Blue Planet Foundation, proposed the foundation of an electric motorcycle gang in Honolulu, Hawaii. They then put the proposal out there on the internet and invited electric bike manufacturers and dealers to contact them for a fantastic opportunity.
“Electric motorcycle manufacturers and dealers are welcomed to submit proposals to sell or lend a bulk number of electric motorcycles to this group of business leaders for any type of special offer or at a discounted price, and for any period of time,” reads a portion of the RFP. “In exchange for these discounted rates and special offers, our electric motorcycle gang will showcase the bikes to the public and bring media attention to the manufacturer through group rides, educational outreach, and local sustainability events.
In addition, the electric motorcycle gang will be routinely covered on Cleantechnica, the world’s largest clean tech news website, with more than 4 million monthly readers and 1.5 million social media followers, the grand majority of whom are men with incomes above $100,000, mainly in the U.S. and Europe.”
It goes on to state that interested parties should send questions, comments, or proposals right to Scott Cooney. If you’re interested, you can read the entire RFP here. It’s sure something.
Look, we like electric bikes around here. We like them a lot in fact, but we’re not convinced this is a real tenable idea. That said, anything that gets the word out about electric motorcycles is pretty great in our book though, so we wish Cooney and his coalition luck. See you on the road soon, man!

THE FLORIDA FREEDOM FIGHT–As we prepare to celebrate the birthday of American democracy, Second Chances Florida wants to place a spotlight on some of the 1.4 million Floridians who are still fighting for the eligibility to participate in our democracy.
These are our friends and neighbors that want to be able to fully participate in their communities and build a stronger Florida. These are men and women who have served our country and placed their lives on the line to protect that very democracy. These are our family members that want to contribute and build stronger communities.
Will you help make a stronger Florida by supporting our work to pass Amendment 4, the Voting Restoration Amendment? Your gift of $4 today will help ensure that every Floridian hears our stories.
Here in Florida, we know our system is broken. There are countless stories of thousands of American veterans living in Florida that have been banned from voting for life because of a past conviction, even after they’ve completed their full sentence and paid their debt to society.
Former member of the U.S. Army Andrew Darling of Orlando, who served two tours in Iraq—in Baghdad and Kandahar—is a recent graduate of the University of Miami School of Law. Andrew said, “I spent seven and a half years in the U.S. Army, including two tours in Iraq. Losing your eligibility to vote shouldn’t last longer than the sentence for the crime you committed. Having access to voting, the ability to vote, is fundamental to being an American and a Floridian.”
Amendment 4 will restore the eligibility to vote for Floridians that have earned a second chance.
Help us celebrate America’s Independence Day and thousands of Florida veterans by supporting the campaign today.

WE DON’T NEED IT NOW, BUT A READER WANTS TO KNOW —I had some questions about this tech about Heated Clothing. The Bikernet Baggers Editor in Chieftain immediately responded.
The lead is long enough to run pretty much out either side of the motorcycle and it would not be a problem with the clothing working. The only problem I would see is if the clothing was not in use you would have a long connector running? In this case it is neatly secured to the saddlebag crash bar.
The lead from the motorcycle to the clothing is a Quick Disconnect slide fit. No problem if you had to get off the bike quickly. It would Not damage the lead. See 6th photo down.
There is one fused power lead to the motorcycle if for and reason the hot lead became damaged the fuse would go and protect everything else and of course the ground is ground anyway.
A Y jumper cable comes off the lead to the battery and supplies power to jacket and pants which each have separate heat controls. If only one garment was used you would not need the Y.
The garments also have connectors in case you want to add gloves, socks etc. Note connector wires on sleeve of jacket all have little pockets for the wires to store in when not in use. See photo of jacket.
Looks like H-D did their homework on this.
The heated clothing comes with really good information and instructions. Depending on the rider preference some minor variations are possible

THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, DON’T FORGET TO VOTE–You and I are in the fight of our lives.
Anti-gun politicians are spewing hate at NRA members, claiming that law-abiding gun owners like you and me are responsible for horrific crimes committed by society’s sickest criminals.
And the mainstream media is pouring gasoline on the fire by spreading lies about NRA and anyone who dares to question their anti-freedom agenda.
They’re coming after you, me and our gun rights like never before.
Make no mistake – if we lose our pro-gun House and Senate majorities in the upcoming November election, it could mean the end of the Second Amendment as we know it. That’s why I’m counting on your support now more than ever.
And to thank you in advance for your continued NRA leadership in this crucial election battle, I’m inviting you to enter NRA’s “Summer Tan” Gun Giveaway today.

No contribution is required to enter or win, and a contribution will not improve your chances of winning a prize.
But your contribution WILL go a long way toward helping us save freedom!
Only with your financial support can we get our message out with hard-hitting TV and radio ads that tell the truth about guns and crime… reach out to voters online with targeted digital ads… turn the tide toward freedom in this election… and save our guns and our rights!

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–
Greenland Continues To Gain Ice – 2 year in a row ‘which there has been a large increase in ice’
https://realclimatescience.com/2018/07/greenland-continues-to-gain-ice-2/
With only 30 days left to the Greenland melt season, it hasn’t started yet. Yet another catastrophe for climate alarmists.
Last year, DMI scientists tried blaming it on Hurricane Nicole, but there wasn’t any hurricane this year. Sea surface temperatures around Greenland are running very cold.
This is the hottest week of the year on the ice sheet, and temperatures are well below freezing.

AMA LEGISLATIVE NEWS– National and Regional News
MILWAUKEE – The Harley-Davidson Motor Co. announced it may shift to overseas production of motorcycles for the European market to avoid stiff tariffs approved by the European Union in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on European products.
Harley says President Donald Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum will cost Harley as much as $20 million this year, with European Union retaliation adding $45 million in costs. The company has plants in India, Brazil and Australia, where production for its European customers will move. The European Union raised U.S. motorcycle tariffs from 6 percent to 31 percent. Harley sells about 40,000 bikes a year in Europe.
MEDINA, MINN. – Polaris Industries Inc., which produces the Indian brand of motorcycles, said it may shift some production to its plant in Poland because of the European Union tariffs on motorcycles with 500cc or larger engines.
The move would include the production of motorcycles aimed at the European market. Polaris said the tariffs will add $15 million a year to the company’s costs if it continues to ship U.S.-made motorcycles to Europe.
The Twin Cities Business Journal reports that Indian Motorcycles are manufactured and assembled in Roseau, Minn.; Spirit Lake, Iowa; Osceola, Wis. and Huntsville, Ala. Manufacturing and assembly also takes place in Monterrey, Mexico. Polaris’ Opole, Poland facility is 345,000 square feet and has a capacity for 500 employees, according to the company. It opened in 2014 for manufacturing off-road vehicles.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced higher proposed levels of ethanol for 2019, which could lead to increases in the number of stations selling fuel blends containing more than 10 percent ethanol by volume. The 2019 renewable volume obligations announced June 26 call for 19.88 billion gallons of ethanol to be blended into the nation’s vehicle fuel supply in 2019, up 3 percent from the 19.29 billion gallons mandated for 2018.
All of the proposed increase is in advanced biofuels-those made from non-food sources-while the amount of ethanol derived mainly from corn remains flat at 15 billion gallons.
The AMA opposes any increase in the amount of ethanol the government mandates for U.S. vehicle fuels, because none of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs currently in use are approved by the EPA to use fuels containing more than 10 percent ethanol by volume. The AMA also fears that higher-ethanol blends, such as E15 will begin to push ethanol-free and E10 fuel out of the marketplace, much the way E10 has marginalized E0.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The California Off-Road Recreation and Conservation Act (H.R. 857) has passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The AMA supports this bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Paul Cook (R-Calif.). The bill would establish or expand six Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Areas in the California desert.
Other areas would be designated as wilderness, primarily within these wilderness study areas and Death Valley National Park. H.R. 857 also would protect OHV users by ensuring that OHV areas cannot be closed by administrative action. The bill would add about 39,000 acres to the National Park System at Joshua Tree National Park and Death Valley National Park.
The bill also would designate about 18,000 acres of federal land as the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area, restricting large-scale projects, while preserving existing recreational and commercial uses. Motorized vehicle use would be unaffected.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The Boat Owners Association of The United States is surveying its members about their experiences with fuel that contains ethanol. The 13-question survey (http://sgiz.mobi/s3/EthanolSurvey) is intended to provide an understanding of how ethanol fuels are affecting recreational boating this summer, gauge opinions and seek comments related to the Renewable Fuel Standard.
BoatUS says that gasoline use has not increased as forecast when the RFS was enacted, which forces more ethanol into each gallon of gas. As with motorcycles, recreational boats are approved only for use of fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol. However, 92 percent of readers of Boating Industry magazine reported in 2017 that they have seen damage caused by ethanol, which also decreases fuel economy.
State News
HONOLULU – Gov. David Ige (D) vetoed a bill that would have allowed motorcyclists to use the right shoulder to navigate around congested traffic. H.B. 2589 passed the state House and Senate, with a two-year sunset provision. Ige also has reportedly said he will veto any lane-splitting legislation that reaches his desk.
NEW YORK – The New York Motorcycle & Scooter Task Force has set up a Checkpoint Alert System for riders. The AMA urges New York-area riders to take advantage of this service.
Those who sign up for the Checkpoint Alert System get notifications about motorcycle-only checkpoints in New York City. The system also allows them to warn other riders about MOCs. The AMA supports the work of the NYMSTF on this practice and its fight for riders’ rights in the city.
Whether it’s discriminatory checkpoints, ticketing riders for daring to open their face shields at a stop light, unfair congestion pricing proposals or the unnecessary impounding of parked motorcycles for minor infractions, the NYMSTF has organized a community of riders to fight back. Motorcyclists can connect with the NYMSTF on its website (www.nymstf.org),
Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/nymstf/about) and Twitter to stay up to date on the group’s efforts to address motorcycling issues in New York City.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – S.B. 1316 has passed the state Senate and has been referred to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for consideration. This bill again attempts to deny the OHV community a long overdue opportunity for increased motorized recreational opportunities on property purchased using funds from the Off Highway Vehicle Trust Fund over 20 years ago.
This legislation ignores the fact that a majority of the opposition comes from local land owners, many of whom previously agreed to the acquisition, and disregards the legislature’s own approval of the purchase expressly for OHV recreation. This important State Vehicle Recreation Area has been part of the California State Parks system since 1980, when the site was purchased by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
Prior to that the 1,500+ acres was privately owned and enjoyed by generations of motorized recreationists, including a period when it was operated as a private motorcycle park. AMA members and indeed all OHV recreationists must immediately contact their elected officials and remind them of the agreement that was made when the expansion properties were acquired.
It is also important to remind them that the program uses no general fund monies and is in fact based on a user-pay, user-benefit style model. Monies used to pay for the program include those taxes collected on fuel, SVRA entrance fees and vehicle registrations (green and red stickers).

DAVID ALLAN COE CONCERT NEWS–Like Merle Haggard before him, David Allan Coe served time in prison before setting his dreams on becoming a country music star. Coe headed to Nashville in 1967 and found his first big success over five years later — as a songwriter. As a singer, his biggest hits were “Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile,” “The Ride,” “You Never Even Called Me by My Name,” “She Used to Love Me a Lot,” and “Longhaired Redneck.”
His best-known compositions are the No. 1 successes “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)” (which was covered by Tanya Tucker) and “Take This Job and Shove It” (which was later covered by Johnny Paycheck and inspired a hit movie.) His defiant stance and love of motorbikes, multiple tattoos and ultra-long hair made him a natural ‘Nashville outlaw’, which he wrote about in the self-glorifying ‘Longhaired Redneck’ and ‘Willie, Waylon And Me.’
Coe’s musical style derives from blues, rock and country music traditions. His vocal style is described as a “throaty baritone”. His lyrical content is often humorous or comedic. Thomas Erlewine describes Coe as “a great, unashamed country singer, singing the purest honky-tonk and hardest country of his era…..He may not be the most original outlaw, but there’s none more outlaw than him.”

TRUMP SAYS HARLEY WILL TAKE A HIT–
Trump rails against Harley-Davidson, claims sales are down 7 percent.
Ryan calls tariffs ‘basically taxes’ amid Trump’s Harley-Davidson feud
Trump says Harley-Davidson’s planned overseas move will be its ‘end’
Trump slams Harley-Davidson over tariff dispute
WASHINGTON– President Trump in an interview aired Sunday, accused American motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson ?of using tariffs as an excuse to produce more bikes overseas.
“Look, I devoted a lot of time to Harley-Davidson. I treated ?them good. I guarantee you everybody that ever bought a Harley-Davidson voted for Trump,” Trump told Maria Bartiromo during a sit-down for her ?Fox ?News show “Sunday Morning Futures.”
“I guarantee you everybody that ever bought a Harley Davidson voted for Trump,” the president claimed. “I don’t know if you know that. I would have to – they call them Bikers for Trump. There’s hundreds. ”
?T?he Wisconsin-based company announced Monday that it would move some of its production overseas to avoid retaliatory tariffs enacted by the European Union? in response to Trump’s trade policies.
The president ?also ?claimed Harley-Davidson had planned to make the move for the past six months.
“They made this deal at the beginning of the year, long before they ever heard of the word tariff,” Trump said. “They made this deal at the beginning of the year. And I don’t think they should do it.”
“Increasing international production to alleviate the EU tariff burden is not the company’s preference, but represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the EU and maintain a viable business in Europe,” the company said last week.
“I think that Harley is an American bike. It’s an American motorcycle and they should build them in this country,” ?Trump told Bartiromo?, repeating comments he made earlier in the week?. “They shouldn’t play cute.”
Trump suggested the company would take a “big hit” for not building its bikes in the United States.
The company recently finished construction of a plant in Thailand.
“I know those people. Those are my voters,” he said of Harley enthusiasts. “They don’t want Harley-Davidson getting cute to make $2 more.”

LEGISLATIVE NEWS FROM The American Motorcyclist Association supports the following legislation in Florida.
H.B. 33: Texting while driving, removes the requirement that enforcement be accomplished as a secondary action.
Update: Died in committee
The American Motorcyclist Association opposes the following legislation in Florida.
H.B. 583 and S.B. 346. Both bills raise the age at which a motorcyclist is no longer required to wear a helmet from 18 to 21 and require a moped registered to someone younger than 21 to display a license plate. The AMA is opposed to imposing additional restrictions on adult riders.
For information on other legislation the AMA is monitoring in Florida, please visit our legislative report.

NEVER STOP AND NEVER GIVE UP—I know some of my stress is self induced with too many projects, but I’m not stopping until I handle some and get them off my plate.
On the other hand some of the stress comes from our government. I’d like to produce a report on all the government related shit we need to do or pay for every month, but it’s depressing. There must be a way.
I’m working with Tony Sanfelipo and others on another report regarding anti-tampering laws and the California Air Resources Board. Hang on for that. We need to make a difference.
In the meantime, let’s do fun shit, ride hard, build very cool shit, hope someone will make a movie out of Sam ‘Chopper’ Orwell and save motorcycling forever. Like Sugar Bear said this morning, “Dreaming takes us there.”
So, I’m pondering whether to go all deco or dragon with my sculpture.
This is still the restored Panhead deal of the year. It was built to be the exact replica of the Pan on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1951. It’s amazing and would make a helluva addition to any collection. Drop me a line if you’re interested.
I’m still working on my bronze effort. Too bad Jeff Decker isn’t next door, but I do have access to several local artists, who are very helpful.
So, I was forced to make a quick run to Home Depot on July 4th. Fortunately they had the shit I needed to keep the art project rolling.
Here’s the start. I finished two wings, a sketch, part of the base, and I was sorta proud of myself for getting this concept off the ground. The goal will be to hit this for a chunk of time every day until it’s done. Hang on. Let’s see how far I get before Sunday.
In the meantime, ride free forever!
