POST 110TH ANNIVERSARY, AMD SHOW, Thursday NEWS, September 5, 2013

Hey,

This is one of those days. It’s hot for Los Angeles. We are now planning for Las Vegas Bike Fest, even hotter. The front of the building is almost done. I need to go for a ride, but the cops in LA are out in force everywhere.

I’m rolling on the screenplay effort, “Splintered Road.” Every waking moment is spent thinking about it, researching and trying to write. We built a welding table in the shop, then our steel supplier, Fatboy rider died mysteriously the night he delivered the goods.

We have the stellar opportunity to scratch another item off the bucket list. We have the opportunity to sail to Catalina for the weekend on a Tall Ship, the Irving Johnson, a Brigantine. It was built in San Pedro, down the street. If you are interested in this weekend adventure click on this banner. Let me know if I can assist.

I’m scheduled to help judge the Artistry in Iron and the Miss Las Vegas contest on Saturday of Bike fest. So I will see you there. Let’s hit it.

The Thursday News is Sponsored in Part by IronWorks, Cycle Source and Bikerpics.org

BANDIT’S CANTINA SURVEY RESULTS—We asked Cantina member if they would survive without the Sunday Post, and here’s the first response.

Shit can the Sunday post and ride. I just turned 55 and it drives me crazy when a weekend rolls around and I can’t ride. I travel during the week for my job, so usually weekends are the only time I get on two wheels. I feel everyday I can’t ride is a day that’s gone forever.

–David King

I do read the Sunday post but agree with your want to ride on the week ends. Probably would give you more to write about if you did.

What about a Tuesday post for the Cantina Members and remain with the Thursday free edition. Perhaps you could do two Thursday posts including the same stories in both but adding in special articles and pics for the Cantina Members.

Your site – your call.

Have a great labor day.

–Gary

I need the Sunday Post…but it doesn’t need to be on Sunday.

–Patrick Warrick

Yes I read the Post, and if ya want to ride go for it. Have fun and when you get around to writing do what you do best.

Hells Angels memoir a fascinating ride–By KATHLEEN PALMER
Staff Writer, the telegraph
“Phil Cross: Gypsy Joker to a Hells Angel,” by Phil and Meg Cross; Motorbooks; hardcover; 237 pages; $30.

First off, let’s be clear: I’ve been on a motorcycle all of twice in my life. I’m pretty sure I screamed and clung to the bike owner the whole time.

That being said, when “Phil Cross: Gypsy Joker to a Hells Angel” came across my review desk, I was nonetheless intrigued. I knew very little about the Hells Angel Motorcycle Club, nor biker culture. When I sat down to read Cross’ story, I couldn’t put it down.

Born in San Francisco in 1942, Cross grew up during a time on that coast that was full of excitement, cultural change and lots of opportunities to get into trouble.

The book chronicles his journey from his childhood on his family’s ranch in a remote part of California, to learning how to shoot guns and fight at a very early age. After a colorful stint in the U.S. Navy, he became one of the founding members of the San Jose, Calif., chapter of the Gypsy Jokers motorcycle club, who over the years alternated between warring with the Hells Angels and keeping a cool detente with them. The fact that he and a few Gypsy Jokers “patched over” to that rival club was nothing short of audacious.

Cross got into his fair share of scraps and brushes with the law, being in and out of jail and on the run for several years. He discusses dozens of his biker brothers and their experiences, with a matter-of-fact, surprisingly charming voice throughout the book. Yes, there’s cursing, but there’s also humor and pathos, and the reader comes away with a clear understanding of the unshakable bonds these men share from the time they join a club, to the end of their days. It’s enviable and at times quite touching.

What really added to my enjoyment of the book was the copious photos of Cross and his comrades, covering nearly 50 years of being a motorcycle club member. There are some terrific photos of bikers and bikes, showcasing their friendships and gatherings. It’s also a great pictorial of a time period. Dig those 1970s pants and hairstyles!

Cross rubbed elbows with a lot of celebrities throughout his Hells Angels tenure. There he is with John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in New York City, at the height of their popularity. There he is sparring with “Superfoot” Bill Wallace, and chatting up Robin Williams and Gene Simmons at bars. There he is on Willie Nelson’s tour bus, hiding out while on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List.

The biggest thing that shines through the photos, though, is Cross himself. An avid devotee of martial arts and working out, his lean, muscular physique was honed for business. But what riveted this reader was his eyes. There is a kindness and softness there that belies the dozens of tales of barroom brawls and prison stays. It’s probably what hooked his wife, Meg, a clean-cut office assistant to Cross’ accountant who eventually agreed to one date and ended up going on the run with him.

Cross doesn’t look much different now, in his seventies. His rough-and-tumble friends continue to show their devotion to each other still, whether it’s by honoring Cross’ 40 years with the Hells Angels with a cake and a painting, celebrating his book release, or by attending funerals of the fallen en masse. I grew up hearing the word “gang” following the words “Hells Angels.”

But despite the hype – and even the undisputable cold hard facts of some historical events – what is clear from this telling of a life lived on the edge of society is that this was always a club, not a gang, in its members’ eyes. And through the eyes of Cross, we are given a ride worth taking.

THE SEARCH FOR DAD–My name is Rob Hart. My dad use to race motorcycles in the early ‘70s in CedarFalls IA. The track was/is the 1/4 mile. He held the state record in the 500 Kawasaki class for many years. He was asked by several sponsors to race for them but my mom ended up getting pregnant with me.

I believe he raced in 1972, 1973, and maybe 1974. My dad’s name Joe Hart from Charles City, IA. Can you help me find any information about this? He passed away last Tuesday night. Thanks. Rob Hart

BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–Problem at Ace Hardware….There was a bit of confusion at Ace Hardware this morning. When I was ready to pay for my purchases of gunpowder and bullets, the cashier said, “Strip down, facing me.”?

Making a mental note to complain to my congressman about the gun registry people running amok, I did just as she had instructed.

When the hysterical shrieking had finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my credit card. I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future. They need to make their instructions to us seniors a little clearer.

JULY 2013 Student of the Month–
North Randall, Ohio – As you may or not be aware of, PSI has a strict attendance policy – no excused absences – either you are here or not every day.

The Student of the Month for July has not had to worry about an excuse because he has had perfect attendance since starting school last Fall. That is up until missing the whole last week of July. Because of his absence during that week we received the following letter:

“I am writing this letter to give your school a big “Thank You” for letting one of your students attend the Loretta Lynn Motocross event held in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. He helped my grandson who was racing in the 50cc division. He volunteered unselfishly to give us a hand. There are not many individuals today that just offer to help like that and I just wanted to make you aware of the kind of help he gave us. He was very knowledgeable of the way the bike should run and I am guessing he learned that in your school. Keep up the good work.”

– from Larry L. Holder, Fort Wayne, Indiana on behalf of rider Alex Holder

Through the first three weeks of July this student had perfect attendance and an overall GPA of 93.5%. Mr. Holder is obviously not aware of the school’s attendance policy and that we did not let him attend and that his GPA will be affected by missing that week of school.

However, the real world experience the student received by doing so is a big part of the learning process as well as attending class every day and we want to recognize him for representing PSI in a professional and positive manner – even outside of class.

Please join us in congratulating the PSI Student of the Month for July, 2013 from class PT-39:

–Brandon

From there, we have two very dependable students that are the big winners of the monthly drawing from Matco Tools for a $100 worth of tools.

All students with perfect attendance are entered into this very cool drawing automatically by virtue of their dependable and very strong work ethic.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM EXPERIENCE FOR THE MONTH– At least one couple decided that reliving some of that history now would be fun. Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Famer Cris Sommer/Simmons and her husband, Doobie Brother Pat Simmons left the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame on August 20th heading for the 110th Anniversary Celebration of the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company.

The pair finished their ride at the Harley-Davidson museum in Milwaukee. Accompanied by Cris’ brother Mark in a chase van, the two mapped out a route that avoided busy highways as their bikes have a top speed of only about 50 miles per hour.

LOVE RIDE 2013 REPORTS–Thousands Ride For the Troops at 30th Anniversary Love Ride to Benefit the USO.

Jackson Browne, jacksh*t, Chevy Metal, plus special guests set to perform, with Jay Leno as Grand Marshall as Budweiser Presents the 30th Anniversary Love Ride, Powered by GEICO Motorcycle

Thousands are expected to attend Love Ride, the longest running single-day motorcycle fundraiser in the world on October 20, 2013. Budweiser Presents 30th Anniversary Love Ride, Powered by GEICO Motorcycle features Jay Leno as Grand Marshall and Hollywood celebrities Robert Patrick, Lorenzo Lamas, Willie G. Davidson, Peter Fonda, along with musicians and special guests. The all day party celebrates 30 years of fundraising events with proceeds going to the USO to help support America’s deployed troops and their families, wounded, ill and injured troops and their caregivers and families of the fallen. Registration is open at LoveRide.org.

The Love Ride kicks-off with a concert and celebrity press conference at Harley-Davidson of Glendale, followed by a ride to Castaic Lake Recreation Area. For motorcycle riders and non-motorcycle riders alike the event features special music performances by Jackson Browne, jacksh*t, Chevy Metal, plus special guests, as well as delicious food trucks, drawings for exclusive motorcycle items, a custom bike and stunt show.

“Over the past three decades, Love Ride has accomplished a lot with the support of our participants, raising over $24 millions for important charities. This year, we have two reasons to ride and celebrate – first, raise money in support of our troops and their families, and secondly, celebrate our 30th anniversary,” said Oliver Shokouh, owner of Harley-Davidson of Glendale and founder of Love Ride. “We are proud of what we have accomplished as a community and are excited to kick off this year’s event and get ready for the next thirty years.”

“We are grateful for Love Ride’s support of our troops and families. It is because of charity events like Love Ride and the generosity of the American public that the USO is able to lift the spirits of America’s troops and military families and deliver entertainment, connectivity, comfort and support around the world to our servicemen and women,” said Tracy Tucker, USO Director of Fundraising and Development.

Participants can register now at LoveRide.org for just $20. The minimum fundraising commitment to ride and join the party is only $60, which can also be paid in full during registration, with no fundraising required. Admission includes access to both the Glendale and Castaic Lake events, and parking, and one opportunity ticket for a chance to win a variety of prizes, including a 2014 Harley-Davidson Road King.

For $20, advanced registers gain access to their own personal profile to build donations from friends and family to reach their $60 minimum, plus a Love Ride 30 pin and patch, while supplies last. Additional fundraising prizes start at only $150 and the top fundraising participant will earn the coveted title along with thousands of dollars in prizes. The 30th Anniversary Love Ride will donate net proceeds from the event to the USO, with some funds targeted for Glendale Community College and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Helping to make Love Ride 30 possible through their generosity and support, sponsorship includes Budweiser, GEICO Motorcycle, Chevron, Sebastian Professional, Russ Brown, John Paul Mitchell Systems, City National Back and the City of Glendale.

Adding to the fun, title sponsor GEICO Motorcycle is sponsoring a Love Ride consumer enter-to-win contest offering participants the chance to win a brand new Sportster® 2014 Harley-Davidson 883 Iron™. Entry forms will be available at most Western Regional Harley-Davidson dealerships starting September 1st.

The Love Ride has also partnered with Chevron to offer consumers an opportunity to enter for a chance to win a trip of a lifetime and other great prizes. As part of the “Ride of a Lifetime” Sweepstakes, one winner will receive a free trip to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a private tour of Jay Leno’s garage and amazing car collection, and $1,000 in Chevron gift cards. Consumers who visit participating Southern California Chevron or Chevron ExtraMile locations during the month of September can find out how to enter online or by mail. Participants who enter the contest online will be given a keyword to receive $10 off their Love Ride admission.

Thank You, Volunteers at the BUB Speed Trials…Denis Manning and your Crew, all of the salt addicted Racers THANK YOU one and all.

Thanks Salt Lake City, Delta Dale, 5-Ball Racing Team and Global Airline Pilot, once again you saved my ass.

Thanks Rob Tygret of Concrete, WA. Ray Askew of Monterey, CA. Matt Cortez and Crew at Matt Cortez Cycles in Anaheim, CA., Craig Cole, Underground Magic, Wichita, KS., Jeff Love, Big Fish printing in Charlotte, NC.

Your 5-Ball Racing Team arrived home safe and sound after spending the last week of August attending the 10th Annual BUB Speed Trials on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Photos will be scarce as my new telephone over heated the day before the meet ended. Over 600 images vanished, luckily my mind is somewhat intact these days, so the memories are etched until the end of the road.

We were not able to keep the bike running in the idle mode, resulting in no tune and no passes. So we made lemonade out of the lemons and had a blast in spite of a non-running motorcycle. In our spare time we addressed tech issues like metal valve stems, drilled and safety wired the oil drain plug……the list is nearly checked off.

www.ccmotorcyclewheels.com

Yesterday morning delivered the 5-Ball Raycer to Marc Susman’s shop in Anaheim, CA. where Marc and his crew have designed a mechanic friendly backing plate for the Air Plenum with velocity stacks we can remove easily for possible horsepower and torque adjustments. Marc’s shop fabrication man, Juan is also fabricating a strut to replace the Race Tech Mono Shock during shipping and Dyno time in New York. Cross country trips with autos or motorcycles strapped and bouncing tend to destroy shocks.

www.vtwinfuelinjection.com

We have a plan: the 5-Ball Raycer will board an over the road truck, destination Corfu, New York, 2,655 miles, 39 hours and 3 minutes in an easterly direction. Dan Thayer the Daytona Twin Tech Computer Guru will trouble shoot and install the perfect tune for the job at hand. We have a world class contender waiting on a world class tune up. Dan’s the man.

Ride like your life depends on it.

Very honored to be a small part of the S&S Cycle photo.

Thanks….With one helleva lot of help from my family and Industry friends….Thanks, Thanks, Thanks.

TONY SANFELIPO ON MILWAUKEE BILLBOARD—All during the 110th celebration Toy Sanfelipo stood proud on a massive billboard overlooking downtown Milwaukee. Tony has been active in motorcycle rights for over 30 years and an investigator for the Hupy and Abraham Law firm for 25 years. There’s one exception. Tony has a 1948 Panhead. He runs horrible radial car tires and it handles like shit. I’ve offered to pay for a set of new Avons. I’m still trying.

ROGUE HITS THE WITTS END BAR in Wisconsin–One of the good parts of me traveling around the country is that I get to meet a lot of terrific folks and experience some fine biker-friendly establishments.

I mean the kind of place where bikers roam free, are respected, and their motorcycles are secure all year not just during events.

You can tell many of these places because they have been Rogue and Bikernet Certified, with our stickers in the window. I’ve been doing this for a long time, just to let others know we have been there and had a good time, but now our stickers represent an official Bikernet and Roque Establishment Certification. We are currently working on new sticker art for establishments only.

My friend Cat, the one legged blond took me and some other people to Witts while we were at the Harley 110th.

Cat says, and I agree, “Best little biker bar on the border! Hometown atmosphere, biker friendly, awesome staff and huge veteran supporters! A must visit while in Wisconsin.”

LABORDAY 110TH ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND UPDATE–We produced the AMD Invitational Custom Bike Show at the Harley-Davidson Museum. It was a kick ass show with 31 exceptional bikes. Over 1.8 million in rolling iron and Bandit has the write up on Bikernet and you can see it here.

Speaking of Bandit, I twisted his arm for about a month until he relented and flew into Milwaukee to award the Bikernet Editor’s Choice award at the AMD Custom Show. He’s media royalty so we sent the limo and chauffeured him around during the Harley-Davidson 110th Celebration.

He selected Don Weimer’s Bastard Deluxe, a 2012 Weimer Pro Street /Drag motorcycle. It’s a low slung board tracker that is powered by a H-D Twin Cam 107 and painted Kandy Tangerine over Black. Bandit is featuring the sled in an upcoming issue of Bikernet.

For 2013, Bandit was awarded the participation support plaque for supporting custom motorcycle industry.

When not doing video interviews with the builders, he was paling around with Willie G and Bill Davidson. After 2 days he had enough of the celebration and raced off for an early morning flight to SOCAL for sponsorship meetings on his Bonneville project.

Details on sponsorship are forthcoming. And since I’m in charge of sponsor procurement, give me a jingle at jeff @ BikerPros.com if you would like to talk about the 2014 campaign and how it can further your business goals and/or personal prestige.

LIFESTYLE DEAL OF THE WEEK, 2011 Harley Davidson Sportster Forty-Eight XL1200X–

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER MEMORY LOSS DEPARTMENT FINDINGS FROM DR. WEILL–
Six Simple Ways to Lower Alzheimer’s Risk–While the exact cause of Alzheimer’s remains unclear, the greatest known risk factor is increasing age: While you can’t do anything about getting older, there are some simple measures that can help:

1.Challenge yourself. A growing body of medical evidence suggests that lifelong stimulation is the key to building and maintaining brain cells, staving off memory loss and maybe even preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Try doing interesting work (paid or volunteer), pursuing hobbies, engaging in an active social life, taking music or language lessons, or learning a new computer program.

2.Take a daily low-dose aspirin. Some studies link the use of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s.

3.Use healing spices in your cooking. Turmeric, ginger and red pepper can add zing to meals and are all natural anti-inflammatories.

4.Eat a diet rich in omega-3s, including wild Alaskan salmon, sardines, freshly ground flaxseed and walnuts.

WORLD’S FASTEST MOTORCYCLE–
Top 1 Oil’s Ack Attack Streamliner Preps to Break 400 MPH

Rocky Robinson to Pilot the Top 1 Oil Ack Attack at
Mike Cook’s Bonneville Shoot Out Sponsored by VARTA Powersports

On September 12, the speed warriors of the racing world will convene at the Bonneville Salt Flats for Mike Cook’s Bonneville Shootout by VARTA Powersports, the annual assault on land-speed world records. The Top 1 Oil Ack Attack streamliner motorcycle, currently the world’s fastest motorcycle with a top one-way speed of 394.084 MPH and a world record speed of 376.4 MPH, will be revved up to defend its title.

See www.ackattackracing.com for more information including the downloadable Ack Attack land speed motorcycle racing video game app.

As the Top 1 Oil Ack Attack team preps to break the 400 MPH mark against three competitors from across the globe, pilot Rocky Robinson and owner-designer Mike Akatiff are preparing to break their own world record. This San Francisco Bay Area-based team will make their fourth trek to Utah to take on the treacherous terrain of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Designed and built from the ground up by Mike Akatiff, the Top 1 Oil Ack Attack’s bullet-shaped chassis is made from chromoly tubing. The motorcycle streamliner is powered by two 1,299 cc (79.3 cu in) Suzuki Hayabusa turbocharged engines, which produce more than 900 horsepower, and runs on Mickey Thompson tires.

“It’s been a great journey for the Ack Attack team,” said owner-designer Mike Akatiff. “Setting and holding three major world records is a great standard to beat and we couldn’t be more ready to break the 400 MPH mark.”

Pilot Rocky Robinson added, “If salt and weather conditions are favorable, this could be the year a two-wheeled machine officially breaks the 400 MPH barrier and that’s making history.”

The Top 1 Oil Ack Attack’s world records are confirmed and certified by the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), which is the world’s leading regulatory authority for motorsports racing. Additionally, The Top 1 Oil The Ack Attack’s record was included in the 2012 Guinness World Records.

“Top 1 Oil is incredibly proud of the records the Ack Attack team has achieved – and held – for the past seven years,” said Josh Hogan, Global Brand Manager for Top 1 Oil. “The Ack Attack is an amazing and powerful machine that symbolizes our brand and mission of maximum performance.”

The Top 1 Oil Ack Attack is made in the USA by Ack Technologies and serviced with U.S. products. Other sponsors for Ack Attack include VARTA Powersports, Carrillo, Ramsey Products, APE Racings, CP Pistons, Motion Industries, Suzuki, and Motion Pro.

It’s all happening September 12-16, 2013 if conditions are right on the Salt Flats. If weather conditions are prohibitive, the race will be rescheduled in October 2013. Stay in the loop and learn more at http://ackattackracing.com.

Rocky Robinson, current world record holder for the world’s fastest motorcycle rider at 376 mph, will defend his title mid-September at Mike Cook’s Bonneville Shoot Out sponsored by VARTA Powersports. Look for him and Ack Attack to go out early and establish a new record near 400 mph…to be matched or beaten. Go Rocky!

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT MOST APPROPRIATED WORD OF THE DAY–skedaddle ski-DAD-l, verb:
1. to run away hurriedly; flee.

noun:
1. a hasty flight.

“We don’t have time to waste today, Eddie,” she told him abruptly. “Now get your coffee and skedaddle.”

— Katherine Hall Page, The Body in the Bouillon, 1992

They just used to skedaddle off to work — I’ve seen hundreds of ’em, bit of breakfast in hand, running wild and shining to catch their little season-ticket train, for fear they’d get dismissed if they didn’t; working at businesses they were afraid to take the trouble to understand…

— H.G. Wells, The War of the Worlds, 1898

Skedaddle is an Americanism that arose in the 1860s. It may be related to the Scottish dialect word of the same spelling meaning “to spill, scatter.”

UNCLE MONKEY MEETS THE BIKERNET PHILISOPHER ON THE BIKERNET MOUNTAIN–Our heart beats out the pulse of an American V-twin. Mile after mile, road after road. The machine moves on instinct not brute force. A subtle squeeze of the leg to the side of the tank pitches the machine here; a caress of the handlebars brings it there. We should have been back hours ago or was it days ago. One more mile, one more curve, one more ridge to ride until we turn back.

We understand why the wild mustangs of Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas thunder across the open prairie, across the mountain passes and down into the canyons. We understand why the majestic eagle is so patient to ride the winds waiting, watching, only coming down when necessary. Freedom. Freedom not granted by men, by words on a piece of parchment.

True freedom. The freedom that comes from within men’s hearts, from their souls. Freedom that we can only obtain from Mother Nature, Freedom older then time itself. We are part of nature, wild and free. We are not to be chained, not to be contained.

Twist the throttle. Feel the winds of eons fill your lungs fill your being. The clouds gather and dissipate, the sun rises and falls. A global heartbeat we are all part of. Embrace it, taste it, savour it. Twist the throttle and shed the shackles of society. Few men truly know this feeling, Nature’s freedom, machine’s freedom, Man’s freedom, your freedom.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON REACHES INTO THE ELECTRIC BOX–Harley-Davidson to launch 500cc learner bike … and maybe an electric?

–By Loz Blain

Just checking … no, it’s not April 1. During its 110-year anniversary celebrations, iconic American manufacturer Harley-Davidson has dropped a couple of brand-twisting bombshells – firstly that it’s building a 500cc learner bike, and secondly that an electric Harley is under serious consideration.

Here’s an interesting tidbit: if you search Google, you’ll find 12,700 results that contain both the word “Sportster” and the defensive phrase “not a girl’s bike.” Try the same search using the Honda Shadow, another mid-level cruiser, and you get just 965 results.

The Sportster, of course, is the current mid-capacity cruiser line in the Harley-Davidson range, with 1200cc and 883cc engine models. That’s bigger than most sportsbikes, but not big enough to escape the ridicule of certain big-bore Harley owners (1400cc and upward) who seem to think 883cc isn’t hairy-chested or noisy enough to be considered a “real bike.”

And that’s the market into which Harley-Davidson is planning to release a 500cc learner machine, ostensibly to replace the excellent 492cc Buell Blast which was scrapped, along with the entire innovative Buell brand, back in the depths of the global financial crisis in 2009.

Despite any flak new riders might face, the move opens up several new markets for H-D including restricted-license riders throughout Europe and Australia, and aspirational customers through India and Asia, where a cheaper, 500cc Harley would still be bigger than most things on the road.

H-D’s COO Matthew Levatich, speaking at the company’s 110-year anniversary celebration in Milwaukee, said the as-yet-unnamed bike is “nimble, light weight, has a low seat height and supple throttle and braking. I’ve ridden it – it looks great, sounds great, it’s a Harley, and it’s priced right.

“We want to get it out as soon as we can, but it’s got to be right. New engines are complicated, and we’ve got to get everything right from a durability, reliability and confidence perspective. On the other hand, chassis and other things are a lot more straightforward.”

He also hinted that it would likely be built in India: “The American qualities of a Harley are very important to people,” said Levatich. “The literal ‘where does that shock absorber come from’ part of it is less significant, but it has to have the spirit and soul of America. We have Harley-Davidson factories in India and Brazil – can we leverage those facilities and expertise so it can get to the, for example, Indian consumer, faster?

“These are things we are becoming more open-minded to, but we understand the importance of ‘made in America’ – the American quality, spirit and integrity that matters to the customer.”

And if a 500cc Harley-Davidson wasn’t enough of a brand-twisting bombshell, Levatich went on to talk about the possibility of an electric Harley that ditches the combustion engine altogether.

“I am sometimes asked … whether there will be an electric Harley,” said Levatich. “People would say ‘hell no’. But why not: our engineers are quite intrigued with the idea of what an electric Harley would look like, sound like and feel like. And would it be visceral, would it be emotional, would it be luscious. And there’s a way to do that I believe, and it would be very exciting.”

Baby Harleys … electric Harleys … if Milwaukee pulls this off, it’ll be a bigger shift in brand perception than when BMW shrugged off its old-man-bike reputation with the S1000RR. What are your thoughts?

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF MOTORCYCLE INVASION–It has become something of lore, something to talk about, something that still today is remembered by many. It was the day the Hell’s Angels came to Porterville.

But, it is not that the Hell’s Angels converged on the town of only 8,000 residents at the time. It is that Porterville stood up to the notorious motorcycle riders and ran them out of town.

Watch for the whole story in Bikernet’s History Department this coming week.–Bandit

FEDS TO MOTORCYCLISTS: PUMP E-15 INTO YOUR BIKE OR GO TO JAIL– The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports that according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) using ethanol blends of 15% ethanol in any vehicle that is not a passenger vehicle will be in direct violation of Federal law.

The EPA has issued a list of possible plans to mitigate mis-fueling issues with the recently approved E-15 ethanol blends. Prior to E-15, the highest blend allowed for mass consumption was E-10. The MRF has been informing the EPA that the higher blend will be forced upon motorcyclists because of the remaining fuel in the hose from the previous customer. The EPA then said that a 4 four-gallon minimum purchase would be required by everyone. That was rolled back and an EPA document specifically mentions the work of the motorcycle rights organizations in the overturn of the mandatory minimum.

From the EPA: “However, groups representing motorcycle owners and lawn mower manufacturers objected to this configuration because their products have gas tanks that are normally two gallons or smaller. In response to these concerns, Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) developed and proposed a new configuration for EPA approval that retail stations may use as an alternative to the currently approved configurations.”

The solutions provided by the EPA is to label the pumps with attention getting labels that you are about to pump E-15 into your vehicle. Or purchase new blender pumps that only carry about .3 gallons or have a new pump with a dedicated E-15 hose. The first solution won’t work and the second two solutions are too expensive.

In another recent EPA document on the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) the EPA states: “The EPA will propose to use flexibilities in the RFS statute to reduce both the advanced bio fuel and total renewable volumes in the forthcoming 2014 RFS volume requirement proposal.”

The EPA also maintains that while ethanol will be the dominating renewable fuel, the marketplace for them is shrinking fast.

In a recent Wall Street Journal piece the author, US Representative Patrick Meehan, pointed out that the EPA’s position on the RFS was weak; “refusing to take action this year is a far too tepid response to this crisis. Next year may be too late.” said Representative. Meehan.

In order to stop the onslaught of higher ethanol blends the Motorcycle Riders Foundation asks that you support this important piece of legislation. HR 875 is a bill that would stop the sale of E-15 and includes a study on the actual effects on the power train of your vehicles.

Call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to speak to your member of Congress and ask that they support this important legislation.find/

IT’S ALL HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND—I don’t know exactly how we are going to do this, but we are going to create the Sunday Post underground. I’m going to start it on Thursday like always and pass it on.

The notion that excited me was to kick it off on Thursdays. So let’s see if that possible. Next week we will hit Bennett’s Performance on Monday and try to wrap up his Dyna build so Eric can go for a ride.

I’m working on a headlight installation tech for Rivera Primo. It will involve Custom Cycle Engineering and Paughco, since I don’t have a bike readily available. We are working with a bare wide glide, so we needed to build the platform.

I’ll feature this bike above next week. Look hard at the frame. All the fabrication is handled by hand near the beach in Oxnard.

Let’s see how we pull off the Sunday Post.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
