Ho, Ho, Ho,
Well, we survived another Xmas, and it was a grand one. We had a blast with friends and relatives. This year was beyond interesting, challenging, and progressive. We made headway in every respect from major improvements to the sites, staff expanded, new business opportunities, bikes fixed, and serious improvements to the Interplanetary Headquarters.
So, let’s look at 2014, and I chuckle because this year will be absolutely wild in so many respects. And I’m going to touch on the broad issues only. We have set the stage for major content generation on all of our sites and the blog. I’ve got to give the lion share of the credit to Chris and Richard Kranzler, to Ben Lamboeuf, and then to Jack McIntyre who is loading us up with photo coverage from events all over the country. Our list of talented contributors expanded, from Paul Garson, to Peter Linney, Agent Zebra, Josh Placa, David Campbell, Bikernet Betsy, don’t get me started. I’ll be here all day.
So, the sites will be cooking, and then there’s Bonneville. Ray’s bike is nearing completion, tuning and wind tunnel testing. Kent Weeks has our belly pan, the Paughco frame, and assorted pieces to start on the tube frame. Of course that’s the key element, then the JIMS 135-inch Twin Cam driveline. Any Bonneville effort involves sponsors, monthly reports, news updates, along with building the bike or trike in my case, and truck and trailer preparation for the mission on the salt. Hang on.
Let’s hit the news, then I will continue the 2014 overview:

BRAND New Bikernet Reader Comment!– Classic Frame Modifications
I was especially interested the front engine case mounting ears. I recently had a shop repair a cracked engine case ear on the front both sides, now the rear rocker hits the seat post. I notched and plated in for clearance and thought this would fix the problem, wrong.
Now the inner cover holes does not line up in front (sprocket shaft). Machined out inside of cover front for belt guard clearance and re drilled holes for proper mounting. Still more problems, now primary belt will not fit, I tried one tooth smaller front gear on sprocket shaft and still the belt will not work. What did these people do to me? They tell me that my stock 77 FX frame is defective?
That’s another story I’m dealing with, can you give me any advise on how I might correct this nightmare.

Generally, you need to line up the rear engine mounts first, then shim the fronts. Then loosen all the bolts and bolt up the inner primary. Generally, we use the inner primary to line up the trans with the engine. Don’t pay any attention to how the transmission fits the frame. So bolt the front of the new inner primary up to the engine. Then bolt the loose transmission to the inner primary. Now shim the transmission to the plate. It may be very cockeyed, but that’s cool. Make shims and your drive line will be perfect.–Bandit

ANSWER DISCOVERED FOR OLD Bikernet Reader Comment!– BadAss Shovelhead Engine Build
http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=1705
Mike I love the machine work coming from your shop. I’m interested in a pair of the heads. My engine is 96-incher. I shortened the 5.530 barrels to 5.420 and added S&S’s new forged pistons to increase the compression to 9.7:1 to add some pep to a lazy engine. The heads have had all the
popular up grades over the years like dual plugs and porting. I run a Leinweber L5 cam with Velva touch lifters and single fire Crane 4 ignition.
The carb is an S&S Super E. As you can see I’ve dropped some money into this bike over the years and would still like to run some of the same equipment to keep down cost.
I would welcome your suggestions

Hey,
Depending upon the pistons you have in the motor they may be able to have a 30 degree cut put on them so they’ll fit into the chamber of the
head. The heads were originally designed to be a drop on for like a 8.1 style piston. You can mod the head but then it’s screwed once you do
it. Messing with the piston is a much better choice.
The chamber is 119 generally depending if I drop the exhaust for a bit more valve to valve on a hotter combo. And stages 1 to 4 will show an improvement with a lower lift cam. Stages 1 and 2 are most likely your best bets.. to reap
the benefits of 3 and 4 you really need to step into a cam that has.600 to .650 to take advantage of that juicy airflow.
Now remember if a head flows 274cfm@650 which is pretty smoking for a Shovelhead and in the old days that would have been a fully ported big valve STD head or the like…BUT if you have a cam that only has .454 lift, then that motor will never see 274cfm. It’s really working with
more like 245cfm! The motor only knows and sees what the head is flowing at .450 lift!
If you want to use the cam and such as you have my recommendation would be get a set of Evo Ultima rockers that are 1.67 ratio and whack
the ends. I believe it’s about .083 to make them the same length as a Shovel rocker and they drop right in! This will give you a huge jump
in lift over a 1.43 or 1.5 rocker allowing much faster valve action and added airflow from the heads. In a V-twin it takes roughly 5 to 7cfm
to make 1hp. They are not a very efficient motor like a car. Your E carb will be good up to about 84hp and at that point if the motor has
the potential to make into the 90s or 100hp range you’ll lose roughly 7hp and 7tq over a G carb.
You can bore out the E a bit and trim the
throttle shaft and that works not bad, and definitely will help. A stock E will allow the heads to flow about 245cfm with the shaft trimmed and
then your out of air. So even if you had a .650 lift cam and the heads flow 300cfm, your carb is stopping you at 245cfm!
The stage 2 heads and higher lift rockers will definitely wake that motor up and provided you the working grounds to make even more power down the road, if you decide to upgrade to an Evo based cam.. etc., etc. The heads will work fine with whatever exhaust you choose.. again ultimately a free flowing type exhaust is the best.. and a 2-into-1 will always provide you with a lil’ better throttle response and low end over drags.
If you run drags dont go over 1 ¾-inch, it’s just to big and put a lil’ bit of
restriction in, once you hit 108hp area the motor will love just straight open 1 3/4 drags or a good free flowing 2-into-1.
Merry Christmas.

EXCLUSIVE REPORT FROM JIMS MACHINE–There’s ice on the roads, so why not get outdoors and go for a ride?
As the days get shorter and nights longer, diehard fan Anders Lundgren says no to hibernation and finds out how fun winter can be with ice racing.
In this competition, where the temperature ranges between -10 to -15 Celsius, Anders races over ice with an average speed of 136 mph and a top speed of 149 mph.
He says the JIMS 120-inch engine with the ProCharger worked excellent under those circumstances with almost no problems at all. He has since improved his bike after this competition with a full fairing to improve aerodynamics, which has made the bike much more stable at high speeds.
It was after this event, Anders says, he got hooked on high speed racing. He has since decided to develop his bike and take it to the salt at Bonneville 2016 as a 50th birthday present to himself.
Currently he is rebuilding his bike with a longer swing arm, new wheels, and the new 135-inch JIMS power train. He will tune the bike with this set up under the 2014 season. He is also renovating his 120-inch JIMS engine and updating it to a 131-inch custom built set up and will tune it under the 2015 season.
When it comes time in 2016 he will have a complete JIMS power train on the bike at Bonneville. He hopes he can make good speed with this carbureted street legal 1999 Dyna.

DON’T MISS THIS Blast from the Past: A Tale of Two Crockers ON BIKERNET, NOW!–This is a story of motorcycle sibling rivalry that went down a few years ago and now is worth retelling as 2013 winds down, the tale told by Glen Bator of Bator International.
Case in point, two 1939 Crocker Big Tank V-twins, consecutively numbered 106 and 107. They even have names: The Black Bike and The Red Bike. And that in itself is an indication of the fork in the well-bent road taken by these two cult classics.

YOU’RE KIDDING, THE BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT HOLIDAY WORD FOR THE CHRISTMAS BREAK–schmaltz shmahlts, shmawlts, noun:
The declining use of schmaltz, once a favored ingredient for spreading, frying, and flavoring, is a case in point. Formerly common delicacies, well loved among the immigrant and second generations, are relegated to the status of fond memory.
“…And I’m not going to argue with you because you can argue the schmaltz out of a matzoh and I haven’t got the strength for that today.”
Schmaltz comes from the Yiddish shmalts and the German Schmaltz meaning “fat.” It entered English in the 1930s.
BAD HOLIDAY JOKE OF THE DAY–After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year outside of New York City. New York scientists found traces of copper cable dating back 100 years. They came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.
Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a Los Angeles, California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet somewhere just outside Oceanside . Shortly after, a story in the LA Times read: ” California archaeologists report a finding of 200 year old copper cable, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers.”
One week later, a local newspaper in Houston , Texas reported the following: “After digging down about 30 feet deep in his pasture near the community of Sugarland, Bubba, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Bubba has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Texas had already gone wireless”.

AUSTRALIAN AT LAST A Human Rights commissioner bags Aussie VLAD laws–Australia’s next Human Rights commissioner has savaged the Australian state of Queensland’s anti-biker/anti-association laws, saying they they can be used to punish law-abiding citizens.
The new commissioner Tim Wilson also says bikers should be investigated and prosecuted the same way as other criminals, in an opinion piece for Fairfax Media.
Mr Wilson says the laws are an example of human rights being diluted by governments in favour of “other aspirational, often seemingly worthy, goals”.
He says the Queensland government has created a host of new crimes that could “easily be used to punish law-abiding citizens in the wrong time”, rather than empowering police to prevent crimes.
“If bikers commit crimes the police should investigate and prosecute criminals,” he wrote in the piece published on Thursday.
“But from a human rights perspective it is entirely unjust that freedom of association should be squashed to make the job of the police easier to investigate.”
Mr Wilson said it was his intention to defend human rights from being “further diluted”.
“Rights should be as absolute as possible,” he wrote.”Universal human rights need to be upheld and protected.”
Mr Wilson was a Liberal Party member until Attorney-General George Brandis announced his appointment as human rights commissioner this week.
Fairfax Newspaper Article
As the new Human Rights Commissioner I will seek to defend our traditional human rights from a principled position because they are vital to the preservation of a free society.
The focus in defending human rights in recent years has been on free speech. This is appropriate as free speech is arguably our most fundamental right. Without free speech the capacity to defend all other human rights is diluted.
But it is clear that there are many other threats to the pantheon of traditional liberties, and many freedoms that have suffered neglect in recent decades.
The Australian Human Rights Commission is statutorily charged with promoting the principles within the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. That obligation is entirely consistent with my view that the government’s role is to create the legal framework to preserve and protect traditional human rights, such as free speech, association, movement, worship, property rights and self-determination.
But there have to be carefully delineated limits to human rights when they come into conflict. For example, language that explicitly incites violence and directly threatens another individual’s safety can be legitimately restricted.
Similarly, in broad principle, defamation law comes from a direct conflict between free speech and people’s ownership over their earned reputation – essentially a property right. Defamation law makes it justifiable to limit speech when it unjustly harms that reputation and the right for an individual to earn from it.
The question for government is: where do you set the bar? If the defamation bar is set too low free speech is curtailed. Too high, then people can destroy other’s reputation without recourse. I think it’s clear that, right now, the bar is too low.
But the broader concern is the dilution of human rights by governments in favour of other aspirational, often seemingly worthy, goals.
An example is the Queensland government’s recent anti-bikie gang laws, being adopted in other states.
If bikies commit crimes the police should investigate and prosecute criminals. But from a human rights perspective it is entirely unjust that freedom of association should be squashed to make the job of the police easier to investigate. Rather than empowering police to prevent an already comprehensive list of crimes, these laws have created a host of new crimes that could easily be used to punish law-abiding citizens in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Some might say my approach to preserve and protect these traditional human rights is absolutist. This is not the case. But too often we have been willing to undermine fundamental rights in the name of “balancing” them. Rights should be as absolute as possible. Universal human rights need to be upheld and protected.
As Human Rights Commissioner it is my intention to continue defending them from being further diluted.

BADLANDS SOLD–Jeff Zielinski buys Badlands— Leading US motorcycle wiring specialist NAMZ
Custom Cycle Products Inc. has purchased Badlands Motorcycle Products Inc.
“The deal took a while to get completed, but all good things work out in the end” said NAMZ President, Jeff Zielinski. “NAMZ and Badlands have been working closely together for well over 10 years; NAMZ designs and manufactures all Badlands wiring harnesses for their modules.”
Badlands President, Dan Lewis, felt that NAMZ would be able to take his company to a higher level of operational excellence, improve distribution and increase productivity. “They are the best at what they do and the synergies between our companies make this deal a no brainer for NAMZ and the future of Badlands,” said Dan.
NAMZ will close down the Badlands location in Sparks, Nevada, and move all operations to its suburban Philadelphia facility. “We will produce the same quality Badlands modules as they have been for the last 23 years while continuing to develop new and innovating products into the future”.

COOL RUNNINGS FROM IRONWORKS– For many people in the northern most areas of our country the weather is not conducive to riding their motorcycles. But for some that doesn’t mean they have to stay indoors, but instead they do their riding on another type of vehicle. When the snow gets deep enough they don their long johns and insulated gear and fire up their snowmobiles. Now many people might not know that many Harley dealers in those states that get lots of snow were/are also snowmobile dealerships. In fact some of them sold more snowmobiles than motorcycles.
Some of you may remember that during the days when AMF owned Harley there were snowmobiles wearing both the AMF and Harley-Davidson name on them. According to a report on a local TV station in Maine, not only does North Country Harley-Davidson in Augusta sell bikes, it also sells and repairs snowmobiles too.
The report states that the early snows and cold weather have people bringing their sleds in to the shop for tuned ups and repairs. In fact it looks like the mechanics are going to be pretty busy for a while. The cold snowy weather is also gives a boost to the shop’s sales of sleds and accessories sales which helps the shop survive the winter months.
Also benefiting from the snowfall are the area’s restaurants, motels/hotels and gas stations that serve the snowmobilers that use the surrounding trail systems. But local police authorities say to be cautious while out sledding because some bodies of water may not be frozen enough to be safely crossed.

MAKE THIS NEW YEARS COUNT BIG TIME—That’s our mantra for the year: Make every minute count.
Of course the major retort would be: Why? We’ll get to that.
Here’s the rest of the list. I hope to self-publish my last fiction book in the first quarter. The Chance Hogan World Run. We will be writing chapters at least monthly on the Assalt Weapon II, the first Streamlined Trike effort. We may publish a book about this Bonneville odyssey. We hope to make a few more improvements to our headquarters, and one will include a Wilmington, Sailor Jerry, Bikernet mural on the side of the building. This mural can be over 115 feet long and 25 feet high.
I hope to finish a draft of my first antique motorcycle based screenplay in the first quarter of this year, then we will see where it leads. We are working hard with Andrew Calogero, Jeff Najar, and Bob Kay on the growing 5-Ball Racing apparel line.
We will have a 10-by-20 booth at the V-Twin dealer show in Cincinatti in February and we are coordinating the efforts now, then of course we need to think about the run to Sturgis, and finally we have a major opportunity to help distribute Unbrako fasteners.
Unbrako was one of the largest fastener manufactures in the United States for 80 years. They were bought out by a company based in India. These folks have five, one-million-square- foot manufacturing facilities. They are now ready to open distribution outlets in the United States after nine years, and the boss is next door to the Bikernet Interplanetary Headquarters. In fact, the official Unbrako Stainless fastener storage yard will be next door. This is the company that designed the Allen or socket head fastener line. So, if you need fasteners, we can help in a big way.
We are also working on a water system that could help industries all over the country kill bacteria in the water, and save lots of money. One of our mantras is Win-Win, and backed with an all-positive hard-and-fast rule. So, everything we do is either healthy, positive, custom, and or quality. So, the question is Why? Why bother doing anything. We could smoke, drink, and hang out in bars all day long. What the fuck?
I guess the first answer has something to do with caring for our fellow man, the custom motorcycle industry, and blue skies. We are also still working with the Motorcycle Riders Foundation to promote freedom and keep our sport alive. We’ve done it all, and it’s time to give back any chance we get. We’ve been handed some wonderful opportunities, and we’re going to give them all we have in 2014.
Make every minute in 2014 count. What the hell. We only go around once…
Ride Forever,
–Bandit
