Hey,
I woke up this morning in a questioning haze. Recently, I question everything, but this morning in particular. I always tell kids that life is about choices such as: You can choose to go to school or do drugs. You can choose to rob a liquor store or wash cars for extra money. We have witnessed lots of folks head down a slippery slope this year. First, they started doing drugs, then maybe lost a job over drugs, and now they are facing legal issues around drugs.
So, the question is? Is this just a bad year or two? Are the stars out of alignment? Are we enabling too much. Is our government or society sending out the wrong signals? WTF?
Let me know if you have any answers.
On a very positive front, two good friends stepped up when Sin Wu left my side and ran off with a younger man to Hong Kong. I needed help with the internet side and old friends Richard and Chris Kranzler volunteered. I’ve known this couple for about, hell I don’t know, 15-20 years. Chris was stricken with MS and Richard sold everything he owned to move her near a medical facility in Tacoma, Washington. Since he was a lifetime biker and a friend I shipped him my custom Excelsior-Henderson to ride, while he took care of Chris and got on his feet.
This last year while preparing for Bonneville, Richard came to the 5-Ball Racing team’s rescue with a custom van. Then when Sin Wu departed Chris offered to help with internet duties. Together with Richard as a tech writer/computer guru, we are making major strides with Bikernet departments, layouts, and services. Chris and I work together daily to make Bikernet all it can be. Hang on for more updates.

Saturday afternoon DR. Willie prepped the latest pieces for the shift linkage, adding larger diameter shouldered bolts to carry the Pingel Air Shifters thrust at the touch of a button. 120 lbs. of air stored in the airtight R/T Performance Frame. Linkage controlled downshifting will be needed on and off of the track.
Our resident master Welder Tobey arrived just in time to weld out the fresh linkage pieces for a perfect fit. Sunday we repaired the rear mounting tab on the Dyna fuel tank. Foam pipe wrap will sandwich between the tank and frame to cushion high speed harmonics transferred through the frame. The rear tab will also mount on rubber to absorb the good vibrations.
Saturday afternoon we mounted the body work to look for any clearance issue. The Air Tech Streamlining body works looks slick, fits tight like a Dr.’s glove.

BIKERNET TECH TIP OF THE DAY or Lesson learned– Have you ever wondered why BDL recommends that you use a torque wrench when installing your clutch hub on a Tapered transmission main shaft, when it is so much easier to use an Impact driver?
Well, let’s just say bad shit happens. I will let the pictures and Scott at BDL do the explaining.
I sent a quick email to BDL asking “how in the hell does this happen” and “could it be because I used an impact wrench to install this?”

Yes that could be, the impact is a touchy thing, it does not take much to get to 70-80 FT.LBS. of torque, The tapered mainshaft acts as a wedge “because of the taper” and the hub acts as a block of wood, if you drive that taper to far and hard into the wood , then that wood is going to split, same result with a tapered mainshaft and hub.

SPEED WEEK RECORD ON THE WIRE FROM BENNETT’S PERFORMANCE—Yesterday Bob Bennett, father of Eric Bennett broke Jeff Bailey’s S&S record at Speed week by a bunch as he was clocked at 191 mph. The current record is 177, and we hope to hear about the final pass the Bob’s average this morning.
This just in: Bob made a 202 mph pass this morning on his 1650 cc A-class naturally aspirated Sportster. It never clocked over 155 horses on the Bennett’s performance dyno. That’s an aerodynamic and efficient motorcycle. They should be proud.

BRASS BALLS BUFFALO CHIP AND COUNTRY MUSIC BIKER BUILD OFF–As many of you know, we do what we can to give back to our troops. From building bikes for them, to building bikes to support Pros4Vets.org , we do what we can. We were recently asked by the Legendary Buffalo Chip in Sturgis to participate in a bike build off for CMT, which will air between Aug. 18-24th.
They told us, “you can do whatever you want with the bike.”
Dar Holdsworth asked, “Can we give the bike to a Vet?”
They said,“yes.”
Dar asked “Can we give the bike to my dad, a Vietnam Vet who adopted me when I was 16 years old.”
They said, “hell yea, that is pure American family values and we love it.”
So we put the plan in motion and even got our pal Toby Keith involved (more on that later). You’ll have to tune in to CMT next week to see how we faired in the build off. But as for who ended up with the bike… Dar’s dad’s smile says it all.

EXTREME BOARD TRACK TO BE BUILT ON BIKERNET–I made friends with a gent who is making a boardtrack racer by hand. Sold him a set of tanks and we started talking, became buds and then he started going crazy and decided to make every piece by hand… here is a frame casting that he milled from billet (not cast)…
He’s using a Sportster engine and thinking about casting his own cylinders.The guy is exceptional, he works at a train yard making train axles, giant turntables etc. He is a gunsmith as well and has made two Gatling guns by hand that are perfect and work! He is a neat story by himself.

U.S. Reps. Mike Capuano (D-Mass.) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) introduced this legislation, among other items, to protect motorcyclists’ rights. The American Motorcyclist Association protects motorcyclists’ freedom to ride and we support this bipartisan bill.
The bill would require manufacturers to prominently disclose to consumers if a black box is installed on their motorcycle, the data collection capabilities of such a device, and how such data may be used. The bill clarifies that the owner of the motorcycle owns the data and it may not be accessed without the permission of the owner. Furthermore, this bill requires that manufacturers provide consumers with the option of controlling the recording function in automobiles or motorcycles manufactured in the future that are equipped with black boxes.
In other words, consumers would have the ability to turn the black box on or off.
Currently, no federal law exists that clarifies the rights of vehicle owners to ownership of the recorded data.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking requiring black boxes be installed in all cars manufactured after Sept. 1, 2014. The NHTSA already has disclosure requirements, but the Black Box Privacy Protection Act would make the disclosure more prominent and give consumers even greater choice and privacy protections.

THE ALASKAN RIDE HOME TO MILWAUKEE--The ride home is just around the corner! A group of Harley-Davidson riders will be leaving Anchorage, Alaska on August 16th and heading down the Alaska-Canada Highway aka the “AlCan” to Milwaukee, Wisconsin the Home of Harley-Davidson. For anyone who has been living under a rock, this year marks the 110th anniversary of Harley-Davidson Motor Company. This iconic brand means a lot of things to a lot of people.
To me, it means my livelihood, my passion, my freedom and my favorite pastime! Not everyone can be as lucky as me and get all that rolled up into a career! Although this trip is a long haul, we are taking our time and enjoying the beautiful scenery we will be able to see along the way.
Our group has been dubbed the “Rogue Riders” as a result of Alaska being left off the map for the 105th Anniversary Party in 2008. Since they left us off, we created our own ride and called ourselves the Rogue Riders. The name was clever and stuck, so we are using it again! This year the shirt design for our group has the slogan “Hammer Down” which I imagine is appropriate for the way most of us ride…
The ride down is not a giant group riding together, but rather a collection of smaller groups on the same journey and meeting in the same town every night. This allows everyone to ride at their own pace and keeps the roads a little safer for everyone. This year we have some great participants who will be riding down with us and I look forward to making some new friends as we bond on the road. We also are going to have some H-D backing and support with one of the executive level employees from the Motor Co joining us for the entire ride! Taren Rodabaugh will be shipping her bike up to Alaska and joining us for the ride down. She works in the Juneau Ave. facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as the Chief Service Strategy and Delivery Officer…I have no clue what that job description is, but I am sure I will find out along the way of our journey.
During the past week or so, I have been getting phone calls from other Harley dealers along our route that are all being more than accommodating and throwing us some parties as we pass through their area! We have a private group party planned for when we enter the U.S. for our Rogue Riders only at the host hotel, which should be a good time to share our stories from the road up to this point. At this point in our journey we will also be met by my good friend Lorie Muench, who is our Service Operations Area Representative for Harley-Davidson Motor Co.
Further along in our journey we will be spending a couple days in Sturgis, South Dakota. This is our resting time before the final push to Milwaukee. We will all be staying for a couple days and enjoying some very scenic riding around the Black Hills. While we are in Sturgis I will be celebrating my birthday. This will be my second birthday on the road to Milwaukee, in 2008 we sang happy birthday and split a pop-tart at a gas station! I am sure I can find a little more fun in Sturgis this time around!
This trip is the adventure of a lifetime and I am very excited to be getting ready for my second “Ride Home.” I bought a new 2013 Streetglide and got it all set up for the trip down. BIKES BLUES AND BBQ—
Now here’s an event that I would really like to make it to someday. it’s the BBB (Bikes Blues and BBQ) in Fayetteville, Arkansas on September 18-21. 4 days of music, motorcycles, cars and pit masters serving up delicious BBQ.
Events will be held on Dickson Street and at the Washington County Fairgrounds BBB Campground. And at Baum Stadium there will be a Motorcycle Village where Victory and Harley-Davidson will have their newest bikes and demo rides.
Visitors will also be able to explore hundreds of “stores” with loads of unique products while restaurants of both the “brick and mortar” and “canvas” variety throughout the area will be offering great food. During the rally there will be train rides, helicopter rides, an air show, a bike show, parades and more.
Remember it all happens at the Bikes Blues and BBQ on September 18 – 21st in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER REPORT FROM DR. WEIL—Are mud baths safe?
Mud baths are an acquired taste, but they can be healthy and therapeutic. Researchers have found that the application of thermal mud – as opposed to cosmetic mud that often contains alcohol, a drying agent – can give people with dry skin long-lasting beneficial effects.
Mud applications may also be helpful for those with fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. Skin problems may also benefit – mud can help reduce pain from burns and bee stings and draw out heat, reducing inflammation. The mud from the Dead Sea in Israel is reputed to have therapeutic effects for diseases like psoriasis, attracting people from all over the world for mud baths.
If you’re interested in mud baths, be aware that at home they’re perfectly safe, but in a spa setting you can be at risk of contracting a skin disorder if the mud isn’t changed as often as necessary. Some of the bugs responsible, such as bacteria known as psuedomonas, thrive in higher temperatures. Make sure you are using fresh mud if you partake at a spa.

UNCLE MONKEY EXPLAINS THE CODE OF THE WEST– My hundred-year-old character house has needed new windows from the day we moved in. Living in the Snow Belt with winter temperatures dropping below -40 is trying at the best of times let alone watching the cold air blast through the single pane windows. It always seemed like there was never enough in the budget.
Life, family and kids as always put new windows on the back burner until we could afford them. We finally ordered new windows last week relieving the large weight from my shoulders. Last week I also threw a low bid on a total loss Road King that, to my surprise, I won. A new bike, a new bagger for me to work on once I finish everything else.
As the smoke cleared from my credit card after paying for the bike I realized that the bike was almost the same price as the new windows. That the last bike I bought was the same price as new windows. That Snow White could have bought a nice house in many parts of this country.
It is funny how we go through life think that something is out of reach, beyond our dreams until we finally have to bite the bullet and get it over with. It is then we realize that it was just another step, another threshold to cross.
Like most addicts I will find a way to afford my habit. I won’t be going to California this year, I missed Sturgis, I’ll have to scale back my plans for a dream garage, I’ll wait on getting that new to me pick up truck.
Mrs. Monkey never bats an eye, never questions when a new bike shows up in my garage. I promise I will keep it on budget, promise that it will be a quick build, a quick repair, that I will find the money for it somewhere, some how. All that matters is I’ve got another bike.

Both of these movies have good stories. Both

they are not M/C movies.

CORVETTE HISTORY, 60th Anniversary Corvette Display Highlights the Sept. 19-22 Charlotte AutoFair–Has it really been 60 years since the world fell in love with Chevrolet’s Corvette? Fans of “America’s Sports Car” will have a chance to rekindle that romance with a dynamic Corvette 60th anniversary display at the Sept. 19-22 AutoFair at Charlotte Motor Speedway that every die-hard Chevrolet enthusiast and sports car fan will appreciate.
The fall AutoFair features more than 50 car club displays and more than 7,000 vendor spaces that offer a plethora of automotive parts and memorabilia. More than 1,500 collectible vehicles of all makes and models will be available for sale in the car corral that rings the 1.5-mile superspeedway. In addition, up to 200 cars will be auctioned by Dealer Auctions Inc., and kids can enjoy face-painting, bounce houses and other games and entertainment in the huge Play Zone.
The Corvette was born in 1953 with a limited run of 300 Polo White units built by hand from lightweight, experimental fiberglass panels. Following the European pattern for sports car design, that first generation (produced from 1953 through 1962 and now referred to as the “C1” or “Corvette generation 1” by enthusiasts) came only as a roadster with precious few creature comforts. It was powered by a sturdy but sluggish six-cylinder engine until 1955, when it received Chevrolet’s much-anticipated small-block 265ci V-8. The rest of the world has been playing catch-up to the Corvette ever since.
The car we now call the C2 Corvette appeared in 1963, although its official model name was borrowed from GM styling director Bill Mitchell’s personal race car, the Stingray. All Corvettes made from 1963 through 1967 wore a “Sting Ray” badge and, in profile, resembled a shark in attack mode. They also were available in either coupe or convertible and featured a grocery list of performance and comfort equipment to appeal to Chevy’s more traditional buyers. Mechanical improvements marking the C2 included concealed headlights for better airflow at high speeds, independent rear suspension, and a more powerful lineup of V-8 engines ranging from 327ci to 427ci.
The C3 ran from 1968 through 1982 as a coupe and through 1975 as a convertible, but with an interesting third option—the T-top coupe with removable roof panels—that offered buyers an enticing compromise. This generation’s styling was lower and pointier than ever and featured the marque’s first pop-up headlights. Oddly, the 1968 Corvette was not marketed as a Sting Ray, but the name would return from 1969 through 1976 as one word, Stingray. Engines grew larger again, ranging from 350ci to an astounding 454ci V-8 that cranked out 450 horsepower, but not for long. The American auto industry had to meet strict federal standards for emissions and safety, which had the effect of watering down the Corvette’s performance for nearly a decade.
When the C4 debuted in 1984, it was praised for its fresh, minimalist styling, track-ready suspension, and powerful modern 350ci V-8. Gone was the ’70s-era T-top; in its place was a solid one-piece Targa roof panel that could be stowed in the Corvette’s roomy luggage area. A true convertible C4 would resume in 1986. With its “4+3-speed” manual transmission, run-flat tires and anti-lock brake systems introduced during its 1984-96 run, the C4 was the first truly computer-designed and managed Corvette.
The C5, which ran from 1997 to 2004, had two items Corvette engineers had been dreaming about since the 1950s: an aluminum V-8 engine and a transmission relocated to the back of the car for ideal weight distribution. At 179.7 inches of overall length and a wheelbase of 104.5 inches, the C5 was also the largest model to wear the Corvette’s crossed-flags badge. The body was as smooth as a wet bar of soap, which contributed to a top speed of 181 miles per hour and amazing 28 miles per gallon of gas.
Corvette engineers produced another world-class supercar with the 2005-13 C6, which carried a 364ci V-8 that produced 400 horsepower and could reach 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 190 miles per hour—all while returning 26 miles per gallon on the highway. Designers took away the Corvette’s traditional hidden headlights, replacing them with high-intensity fixed units that give the C6 front a predatory stare-down appearance. Chevrolet built the final C6 in February of this year in order to prep its Bowling Green, Ky., plant for production of the fastest standard Corvette in history.
The new-for-2014 C7 Corvette Stingray is a technological marvel on par with any European supercar but for a fraction of the sticker price. It also marks the first Corvette generation not available or serviceable through all Chevrolet dealerships. By visiting one of the specially trained and equipped C7 Corvette dealers, an enthusiast can drive away in a two-seat dream machine powered by a 455-horsepower, 376ci V-8 that shifts through a seven-speed manual transmission for $51,000. That drivetrain is cradled in an aluminum chassis and covered by a carbon-fiber roof and hood, all of which have been sculpted into the most aggressive envelope since billionaire Bruce Wayne combined a Stealth fighter with an urban assault vehicle. Zero-to-60 times are in the sub-4.0-second range, and top speed is expected to nudge 200. Even with acceleration in the jet fighter range, the Stingray still manages a miserly EPA highway fuel consumption of 29 miles per gallon – the same as a Honda Accord sedan or Toyota Matrix economy car.
The Corvette 60th anniversary display at the Charlotte AutoFair will feature a 1957 fuelie, ’63 split-window coupe, ’78 Indy 500 Pace Car replica, supercharged ’13 ZR1, anniversary edition Corvettes, 100th Anniversary of Chevrolet 2012 Centennial Edition Grand Sport and many more examples of the “Plastic Fantastic.”
Hours for the Sept. 19-22 AutoFair are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday. Ticket prices are $10 per day for adults, and children 13 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Fans who buy a ticket for the first three days get the fourth day free. A TAD WARM HERE—I was told a local news program pitched a story about global warming driving us nuts. It’s actually getting cooler here on the coast every year. They want you to believe Global Warming is the bane of our existence, so they can control your go-carts, lawn mowers, and anything that goes putt, putt. It’s nuts. They have forgotten freedom and replaced it with using the system to enhance control and budgets. Watch out.
I don’t want to sound like a radical. I just want Freedom to matter.
Next week Ray, Dr. Willie, and Tobey will cut a dusty trail toward the flats in a truck and trailer provided by Colorado Wheels. They are also machining a new EFI plenum chamber right now.
