Hey,
Got an early start this morning. I’ll scramble, try to wrap the Post and grab a few Sunday hours for a ride, or who knows.
Bonneville is breathing on us hard, then the Boot Ride, 110th Anniversary event and Las Vegas Bike Fest.
I fired the 1928 Shovelhead yesterday, and Richard fired up the Sturgis Shovel. Lotsa progress yesterday, including a few lines in my screenplay effort.
Hell, even my TIG welder is closer to being reconfigured and rocking. Can’t wait to try it. Let’s get to the news.

MALE BLONDE JOKE OF THE DAY— A blonde man spies a letter lying on his doormat.
It says on the envelope “DO NOT BEND”.
He spends the next 2 hours trying to figure out how to pick it up.
A blonde man shouts frantically into the phone, “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!”
“Is this her first child?” asks the Doctor.
“No!” he shouts, “this is her husband!”

NEW CONTRIBUTOR COMES TO BIKERNET—
I have a backlog of travel articles and pointers to events, roads, camping, hotel, sights, and other motorcycle-related content on MotoSFO, a motorcycle touring blog I started a couple of years ago. It is now rather abandoned, as I now live in San Diego.
I also write up reports from my travels and adventure motorcycle events. For example, leaving next week for the Carson City / Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Rendezvous which is actually open to all kinds of bikes from dual-sports to cruisers. Last year a Harley rider led us on a fabulous backroads ride one day and I joined the enduro people on a dirt and gravel and water crossings extravaganza.
I see mostly cruiser/Harley stuff on your site but my reports are from the saddle of my KLR, R100GS, Moto Guzzi 1100, and KTM 350EXC. Can tailor / spin to cruiser market and leave out the make of the bike I suppose. Necessary?
I could blog a combination of new stuff, excerpts from my books, pointers to gear reviews, maybe even motorcycle travel writing tips, my SidestandUp Motorcycle Radio spots and other podcasts, as well as my backlog of my MotoSFO pieces, and maybe some exotic travel stories, to easily maintain a weekly presence for a while to see what kind of response it gets.

Let It Ride: Rockin’ Wheelies
Premieres Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
When a stunt rider from the YouTube sensation “Harley Wheelies” group commissions Zach to build a bike, the challenging, big-ticket job comes down to the wire — pushing Zach and his crew to their limits. This monster of a motorcycle needs to be finished in two weeks for the next “Harley Wheelies” video shoot. The problem? The bike Zach buys is just an pile of old parts. Tensions rise as the deadline looms and the Franken-bike refuses to come together.
Let It Ride: British Invasion
Premieres Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
When Zach decides to expand his horizons by turning a vintage Triumph into a classic Bobber, his British bike choice drives his builders to the brink. Cameron scores a coup by finding a couple that not only wants to buy the Bobber, but also wants to commission a customized Harley. However, the pair needs the bikes in time for the big Hollister Rally, meaning that this tough Triumph has to be in tip-top shape on the double-quick. Tally ho, lads!
Let It Ride: Flat Track Trouble
Premieres Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
After a crash-tastic lesson in flat-track racing, Zach’s on a quest to convert an ancient Harley Sportster into a flat-track race bike. This challenging build leans heavily on Jim, the tater tot–loving lead fabricator. Normally very low-key, Jim starts going off the deep end when his beloved tape measure goes missing. If that isn’t enough, Zach turns up the pressure by adding a high-profile project to the mix — customizing a Victory for a premium Red Bull event with BMX bike champ Corey Martinez.
Let It Ride is produced by Pilgrim Studios for National Geographic Channel. For Pilgrim Studios, executive producers are Craig Piligian and Mike Nichols. For National Geographic Channel, executive producer is Stephanie Buxbaum, vice president of production and development is J-T Ladt and senior vice president of production and development is Alan Eyres.

ILLINOIS BECOMES 20TH STATE TO SANCTION THERAPEUTIC CANNIBIS USE—
Springfield, IL: Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation into law last week making Illinois the twentieth state to authorize the physician-recommended use and distribution of cannabis to qualified patients.
The new law establishes a statewide, four-year pilot program regulating the production, distribution, and possession of medical cannabis. The program creates up to 22 state-licensed cannabis cultivation centers and up to 60 state-licensed dispensaries.
Qualified patients participating in the program must have a preexisting relationship with their physician prior to receiving a recommendation for cannabis therapy. Patients diagnosed with one of approximately 40 qualifying conditions – including cancer, hepatitis C, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and Crohn’s disease – will be permitted to legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis per 14-day period. Under the law, patients must obtain cannabis only from a state-licensed facility.
Arizona, Colorado, New Jersey, Maine, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, DC now have licensed medical cannabis dispensaries up and running. (California dispensaries are not licensed by the state.) Similar dispensary outlets are in the process of opening in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Nevada and New Hampshire. Legislation in Oregon to license and regulate medical marijuana dispensaries awaits action from the governor.
For more information, please contact Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director, or Erik Altieri, NORML Communications Director, at (202) 483-5500.
BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTIVE WORD FOR BANDIT THIS WEEKEND—
waif weyf, noun:
Cadet Blanchet almost forgot his rancour and no one at the mill knew of Mother Zabelle’s project to send the waif back to the foundling hospital.
It wasn’t any one thing that made a waif. Isobel was sure of that. It wasn’t being crippled, or being in disgrace, or even not being married. It was a shameful thing to be a waif, but it was also mysterious.
Waif likely finds its roots in the Old Norse veif meaning “waving thing” or “flag.”
EASY RIDER ACTRESS DIES–Karen Black, Easy Rider actress dies aged 74.
Hollywood star Karen Black, who featured in cult films such as Five Easy Pieces and Nashville, has died aged 74.
Hugely prolific, the Illinois-born actress appeared in more than 100 movies over a career spanning 40 years.
She shot to fame in 1969, starring as a prostitute in Easy Rider opposite Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper.
She died at a clinic in Los Angeles, three years after she was diagnosed with cancer.
Her fourth husband, Stephen Eckelberry, posted the news on his Facebook page.
“It is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend, Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago,” he wrote.
“Thank you all for all your prayers and love, they meant so much to her as they did to me.”
Stars paid tribute to Black on Twitter, including Mia Farrow who tweeted: “Wonderful Karen Black rest in peace.”
Actress Juliette Lewis said: “Karen Black was my mentor and a 2nd mother to me. She inspired everyone she came in contact with. Her spirit/strength My luv [sic] is beyond words.”
Black, who was raised in a Chicago suburb, almost always played troubled, neurotic characters.
She earned an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe award for her role as Rayette Dipesto in 1970 film Five Easy Pieces, opposite Jack Nicholson, as a waitress who dates an upper-class dropout.
She again starred with Nicholson a year later in Drive, He Said, which Nicholson also directed.
Black went on to star with Robert Redford and Farrow in 1974’s The Great Gatsby, for which she won a best supporting actress Golden Globe for her role as Tom Buchanan’s mistress Myrtle Wilson.
She later scored a Grammy nomination in 1975 after writing and performing songs for Robert Altman’s musical drama Nashville, in which she played a country singer.
The actress also starred as a jewel thief in what turned out to be Alfred Hitchcock’s last movie, Family Plot, released in 1976.
“We used to read each other poems and limericks and he tried to catch me on my vocabulary,” she later said of Hitchcock.
“He once said, ‘You seem very perspicacious today, Miss Black.’ I said, ‘Oh, you mean keenly perceptive?’
“So I got him this huge, gold-embossed dictionary that said Diction-Harry, at the end of the shoot.”
By the end of the 1970s, Black struggled to find quality roles and appeared mainly low-budget horror movies.
In the ‘80s she moved into television, filming roles in series such as Miami Vice, Party of Five and Law and Order.
In 1993, she acted in a film which would turn out to actor River Phoenix’s last, following his death from a drug overdose. Dark Blood was finally completed last year and was shown at a number of international film festivals.
According to film site IMDB, the actress had completed two recent projects – the drama She Loves Me Not, starring Cary Elwes and the forthcoming film The Being Experience – opposite Alan Cumming and Terrence Howard.
Despite Black’s extensive filmography, she had to turn to the public to help pay her healthcare costs after she was diagnosed with cancer.
Her online funding appeal raised more than $60,000 (£38,500).
She is survived by Eckelberry and two children.

KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN KICK OFF—
Announcing the Kickstarter Campaign to produce my 7th “Art of Monte Moore” art book entitled MISCHIEF, which includes art from the last 10 years of my career in the PIN-UP, GAMING, COMICS and ENTERTAINMENT industries. For those not familiar with Kickstarter, it is an AMAZON backed fundraising platform for Creatives to launch new projects.
In essence you are pre-ordering the Mischief art book and this helps me cover expenses for the publishing and shipping of the book, and allows me not to have to go through a Publisher who reaps most of the benefits of the artist’s efforts, which I have had some BAD experiences with in the past.
This campaign includes GREAT rewards like custom sketches, signed prints, games, and private commissions for drawings and paintings (including the FRONT and BACK covers of the book!) Other artists who are friends of mine have had great success with Kickstarter projects, and I now ask that you if you would like to aid me in producing the next Art of Monte Moore book and enjoy the images for yourself, or as a gift for someone you know .
Please visit the page and pledge your support. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this, and follow my Facebook Page over the next 30 days of funding when the project will run it’s course, and either be funded and successful, or if goal is not met…then no pledged monies are charged to the supporters.
For those not interested in Fantasy Art Books, there are also those who pledge their financial support to the project to help the artists meet their goals, and ask for no reward/item in return, but no they have done a good thing in supporting the Arts.

RAM vs MOTORCYCLE— Bad-tempered beast knocks biker to the ground after refusing to let him down dirt track .
A motorcyclist was butted off his bike and attacked by a bad-tempered ram after it refused to allow him along a dirt track.
The off-road biker was tearing along a trail somewhere in the New Zealand countryside when he turned a corner to be confronted by the angry beast.
Despite being faced with a large and noisy motorbike, the ram refused to budge and then charged at the front wheel sending the rider crashing to the ground.

MAIG Outdoes Biden on Self-defense—
On August 2, Executive Director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns Mark Glaze managed the twin feat of offering self-defense advice that surpassed Vice President Joseph Biden’s in its ignorance, while simultaneously making MSNBC’s Chris Matthews seem like a voice of reason on the topic.
While a guest on Matthews’ Hardball, the host discussed with Glaze whether he would consider an attacker wielding an ax handle as armed for the purpose of gauging whether the person’s victim should have the right to defend himself or herself with a gun, resulting in the following exchange:
Matthews: Would you consider the guy with the ax handle armed or not?
Glaze: Well, not with a gun.
Matthews: No, would you call him — well, I call him armed.
Glaze: Well, I have a word for him, I have a word for him. I grew up in Colorado where my dad was a gun dealer, and a guy who shoots somebody who has anything other than a gun when they could have done something else like talk or fight with their fists —
Matthews: Well, how do you talk to a guy with an ax handle? How do you talk to a guy with an ax handle?
Glaze: Well, you fight him. You run away. You deescalate the situation. I mean, that`s the way it was.
Glaze’s response betrays Michael Bloomberg and MAIG’s radical vision of a society devoid of nearly all lawful self-defense. The right to use a gun in self-defense in circumstances like the one Matthews and Glaze discuss is not at all controversial, as it would likely be legal in all 50 states (dependent on the exact individual circumstances), and is an extension of one of our most long-respected natural rights.
Several recent cases make this point clear, such as this robbery and beating in New Castle, Del., an assault on a couple in Holt, Fla., and an attack on a high school coach in Monterey, Calif. The classification of an ax handle or other blunt object as a deadly weapon is well-earned, as evidenced by a 2012 ax handle beating in Tarpon Springs, Fla. in which a homeless man suffered life-threatening injuries and his attacker was charged with attempted murder.
In the face of cases like these, it is ludicrous to argue that an attacker armed with an ax handle could not create the reasonable fear of death or grievous bodily harm that in all 50 states would justify self-defense with a firearm or some other type of weapon. Indeed, the FBI’s own statistics demonstrate that year after year, more people are murdered with “[b]lunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc.)” than with either rifles or shotguns (including the rifles and shotguns the gun prohibition movement falsely characterizes as “assault weapons”).
Also, Glaze’s feigned tough-guy attitude neglects the part of population that isn’t capable of fist-fighting or running from an ax-wielding attacker. The elderly, disabled, women facing larger male attackers, and others less capable of physically defending themselves might not be able to afford to test their physical prowess against a violent, armed criminal.
Further, the Hardball exchange begs the question of what weapon, other than a firearm, a cornered victim would have to face in order to use a gun defensively in Glaze and Bloomberg’s ideal world. Would it be OK to shoot an attacker wielding a tire iron? What about a baseball bat, machete, crossbow, or car? Since Glaze and his billionaire boss are attempting to rewrite the self-defense and gun laws of the entire country, Americans might like to know.

LEGENDS RIDE IN STURGIS ROCKS–In a thundering, traffic-stopping exodus from this Wild West town, the sixth annual Legends Ride stormed toward Sturgis Monday afternoon and a date with Kid Rock at the Buffalo Chip Campground.
“It almost looks like a party,” a helmet-clad Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff said before the departure of some 400 motorcycles from Deadwood. “It just gets bigger, better and more successful every year.”
To date, the Legends Ride has contributed more than $300,000 to local charities. Proceeds from this year’s ride are dedicated to Black Hills Special Olympics and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, Woodruff said.
“The Legends Ride is all about the people,” he said. “The bottom line is it’s a great ride for a good cause with a bunch of giving people.”
Participants paid $150 per bike for the chance to ride with motorcycle legends from Deadwood through Vanocker Canyon to Sturgis.
Before departing Deadwood’s historic Main Street, organizers conducted an auction to benefit the two charities selected as this year’s beneficiaries. An autographed guitar sold for $1,700, while a 2012 Harley-Davidson Road King, converted by students at Sturgis Brown High School into a custom Road Glide, garnered $55,000.
John Paul DeJoria of Paul Mitchell and Patron Spirits’ fame, who described the rally as a “unique anomaly” in America, threw in a case of Patron and hair-care products for a year to the winning bidder from Texas.
Among the legends joining DeJoria for the ride were three generations of the Arlen Ness family, as well as Orange County Choppers’ founder Paul Tuttle Sr.
“This is my 42nd rally in a row,” said a smiling Arlen Ness, besieged by admirers and autograph seekers as he mounted his custom bike. “I haven’t missed one in all that time and this ride is a classic.”

NRA Outrage of the Week, Averted—
This week’s outrage comes to us via Castle Rock, Colorado, where a 77-year-old retired US Marine Corps veteran was recently informed by his apartment complex that residents would no longer be able to own firearms there, and would have to get rid of their guns or move out.
A recent 9News article reported on the plight of Art Dorsch, who feared homelessness if he didn’t comply with the new edict. A longtime hunter and concealed-carry permit holder, Dorsch says that apartment managers told him to give up the guns and stay, give notice and move out voluntarily, or be forced to move out if he didn’t comply with the new policy.
Dorsch was understandably concerned for both his safety, and his freedom: “I’m vulnerable. I’m not safe,” he said. “Yeah it’s emotional. Because I don’t think it’s fair.”
Fortunately, in the midst of the ensuing fire-storm of angry complaints and negative publicity, the Oakwood Apartments management (The Ross Management Group) reversed course, and did not implement the gun ban after all. As it turns out, Ross Management was forced to make that decision.
In a follow-up article, 9News reported that a multi-jurisdictional housing authority–the Douglas County Housing Partnership–owns Oakwood Apartments in Castle Rock, and purchased the complex with federal funds. The seniors apartment complex is also supported by local, state, and federal tax dollars. And, according to a spokesperson for the Denver Housing Authority, “It’s unconstitutional to prohibit the legal possession of a gun or a firearm on public housing property.”
At an emergency board of directors meeting, the Douglas County Housing Partnership decided the controversial policy would not go into effect.
“These community policy changes were distributed without the knowledge or authorization of the Board of Directors of the Douglas County Housing Partnership or its staff,” the group’s release said. “This board does not support any action that infringes on an individual’s rights and will not allow Ross Management to implement these changes. The mission of the Douglas County Housing Partnership is to preserve and develop safe, secure, quality housing while providing housing choices for those who have few.”
The 9News follow-up article further noted that Douglas County Director of Public Affairs, Wendy Holmes, said county commissioners were “alarmed” to learn of the policy and pushed the housing authority for “an acceptable and expeditious resolution.”
“The Board of Douglas County Commissioners is pleased that the Housing Authority concurred with the Commissioner’s position that the policy changes from Ross Management should not move forward. We thank them for a quick and proper conclusion,” Holmes said in a statement.
LEGENDS AND HEROES TOUR TO HONOR MOTO PIONEER, PAT MARONEY—
Local Great, Pat Maroney Honored by Legends and Heroes Tour at His Native Track, Unadilla.
July 3, 2013 – Encinitas, CA – As the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season heads to New York for another round of the 2013 season, the Legends and Heroes of Motocross tour will honor former pro motocross local, Pat Maroney. Pat will be present to accept his award, and will be signing autographs on site as well.
Born in 1958, Pat started off at the early age of four riding a Briggs & Stratton on his father’s farm. As he grew, so did his ability to ride and race motorcycles. It wasn’t long before he was winning every weekend at all the local scrambles and then at motocross tracks in Northeast as well.
Throughout his racing career, Pat raced for Husqvarna and many support teams across the country. The dedicated racers best year-end finish was a ninth in the AMA 125cc National Motocross Series, competing against riders like Bob Hannah, Jimmy Weinert and Marty Smith. His best race finishes were fittingly at his local New York stomping grounds, Unadilla Raceway.
The Metropolitan Sports committee in New York summed up the racer flawlessly, “Pat Maroney was just as famous as the rest of them and also had more than his fair share of fans and support. He was one of the first riders to totally whip it sideways going down into the infamous Gravity Cavity at Unadilla. He went down the seventy-foot drop sideways, one-handed and flipping a peace sign. How could you as a spectator not root for a guy who risked it all like that to salute you?”
Seventies and eighties motocross fan-favorite, Pat Maroney was nothing less than a crowd pleaser. After racing motocross, Pat went on to compete in AMA Enduro racing where he became an AA rider after one year. Still not satisfied with his accomplishments on two-wheels, his desire to race led him to road racing where he picked up a ride with Rob Iannucci, owner of “Team Obsolete” where he won the 750cc G.P. number one plate in 1990 and 1991.

Princeton, NJ: Self-reported use of marijuana by young adults has fallen dramatically in recent decades despite the liberalization of state marijuana laws, according to survey data published this week by Gallup.
Since 1996, 20 states have enacted laws allowing for the physician-authorized use of medical marijuana. Two states have legalized the plant’s broader use by adults. Several other states, including California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, have decriminalized marijuana possession offenses in recent years.
While self-reported marijuana use by young adults has declined, consumption by older Americans has increased. Among those Americans age 65 and older, self-reported use of cannabis rose from three percent in 1999 to 17 percent today. Among those aged 50 to 64, self-reported cannabis use doubled from 22 percent in 1999 to 44 percent today.
Overall, Gallup reports that 38 percent of Americans 18 and older have now used marijuana, up from 34 percent in 1999.
QUICK, WE’RE BURNIN’ DAYLIGHT—I just received a call from Buster from Saddlemen. He was standing in the center of Deadwood and was completely blown away. He has never encountered Sturgis and is still reeling.
Then Richard Kranzler called about a ticking inside the Sturgis Shovel. He wanted to quiz me about JIMS lifters, lifter adjustments, and scratching his head. We started discussing engines for the Bikernet Streamlined Trike and he mentioned a guy who is building a 200 horse Shovelhead, and we kicked around Billy McCahill’s 400 horse V-twin. Hang on.
We are hoping to make a run in September to Houston to Kent Weeks, Lucky Devil Metal Works to kick off our effort. Kent will build the frame around the belly tank and Paughco frame components.
Hang On,
Ride Forever,
