PRE-DAYTONA THURSDAY NEWS FOR FEB 24, 2011

Hey,

Another front is moving toward the coast of California, and the air is cool and crisp. Our Bikernet security team of dogs, Tank and Cash, snivel every night in hopes we buckle and let them sleep in the gym.

I can’t wait for the sun to shine full time, then bike building madness will kick in. We are still hoping to have our mudflap girl FXR frames and Spitfire girder front ends by the end of the month. Paul Cavallo is building himself an FXR using our frame configuration and he’s planning to ride to the El Diablo run. We might make it. You never know. Sturgis plans are already coming together.

I’ll start to wrap up the first Mudflap girl build article tomorrow. Should be launched by Monday. Hang on for this. Did you read the Coast to Coast Legislative report? We all need to support our motorcycle rights groups, the regulators are flying at us with more restrictions and rules. Let’s hit the news and fight for freedom:

BIKERNET SUPPORTS THE VICTORIOUS PROJECT–Some of the most important human victories of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and past wars are being fought and won here at home when a wounded soldier returns from war. These men, women are committed to serving our country and their commitment doesn’t end with an injury; their commitment inspires them and all of us to find new ways to serve and create a victorious life.

Victorious is a 13-part television series that will follow the return home of disabled veterans and track their path of overcoming their war wounds and trying to return to every day life in new roles. The series will honor them and first responders for their courage, service and the sacrifice of veterans from all wars – men and women – as they follow their dreams to do the EXTRAORDINARY.   For some, it’s the exciting world of racing – off-road, down hill skiing, track, water skiing, surfing, kayaking – or preparing a car or a motorcycle for a land speed record at Bonneville.

Victorious is also about highlighting resources available to wounded veterans, and raising national awareness of organizations, such as Challenge America, Fueled by the Fallen, Vet Tix, Team River Runners, and Rear Area Support. All committed to helping our returning wounded and showing us how we can all help.

 We’re looking for . . .

* stories for upcoming Victorious television and web segments

* injured veterans interested in crewing and racing at Bonneville

* organizations that help our injured veterans

* companies and individuals that would like to participate in the Project

MIKUNI/SHOVELHEAD TECH LESSON FROM ACCURATE ENGINEERING– Almost without exception it is always the basics, if it is not mechanical so that is what we will look at first.

I am going to assume two things. 1. that the carb is a Mikuni HSR 42 and 2. that the engine WAS running in a properly tuned state until this trip. That being said then the carb should need nothing. You are almost at sea level give or take. I believe the Smoke Out is held in Cottonwood, AZ. which is about (if memory serves) 4,000 ft. elevation. This means that your engine would have been running RICH while in Cottonwood.

Lets check the basics first. This is how I want the carb adjusted assuming it is an HSR 42, Low speed jet 25, main jet 160, needle #97 with clip in the center position and I want the accelerator pump nozzle to a #50. The accel. nozzle presses in and out with an o-ring for locking in place. It has a screw driver slot so it can be positioned to squirt down the carb throat. It DOES NOT screw in. I want the air/fuel ratio screw at 2 turns out from a LIGHTLY seated position. Check intake manifold for leaks. With engine running spray a little brake clean around the intake clamps and listen for any change in rpm or any stumbling. Have engine at a slightly high idle when performing this. Check your fuel delivery system including the gas cap vent.

Ignition. Make sure your engine is properly timed at 35 degrees when in the advanced mode (2000 rpm). Check battery and ground wire. Check plug wires and coil including all connections for broken, loose and corrosion. Are you running points, mag or electronic ignition? Whose ignition (manufacturer).

Spark plugs. You should not need any oxygen additives in your gasoline. You never had to have them before. I am again assuming this isn’t a high compression hot-rod but rather a standard built 93 Troublehead. In truth spark plugs SHOULD look almost clean on the porcelain or a slightly tanned color. When you are running really lean and hot your porcelain will have a pink/green color and the ground electrode will have a deteriorated look and gray in appearance. Very noticeable. Do not run engine in this case without re-tuning.

If you are running 1975 and up heads with 3/4 reach spark plugs the first four threads should be dark. This is your heat exchange. Electronic ignition gap @ .035-.038, points ignition @ .025. Please use Autolite 4265 plugs if the head require 3/4 (long) reach plugs. Remember that it takes awhile before your new spark plugs start to “color”. A wide open throttle, cut engine, check plugs is best but not always practical.

Valve train. Are you running hydraulics or solids? Whose lifters? If your pushrod keeps showing signs of needing adjustment you must check your lifter roller and if ok you have to check the valve assembly. To help direct you here I need to know what kind of lifters and I can share a few tricks here. Unless there is a mechanical issue, that happens, it is back to basics. Good luck and keep me informed.

I am freshening Rogues engine that we did a few years back. It currently has 97,000 miles on the clock and needs very little. Pretty neat, eh?

HOUSTON POLICE CHIEF, Charles McClelland went on the defensive Thursday during a meeting with local journalists, saying officers have made recent traffic stops in which residents leave their vehicles to take pictures or shoot video — encounters he says could endanger officers and that have increased following the release of the Chad Holley beating footage.

“Officers are telling me that they’re being provoked,” the chief said. “Even when they try to write a simple traffic ticket, people are jumping out with cell phone cameras scanning their badge numbers and their nametags. And I’ve asked them to remain calm and treat people with respect and dignity.”

McClelland said he is concerned that an intensifying anti-police sentiment in the community could increase negative interactions between Houston Police Department officers and residents.

“This rhetoric can give someone a free pass to try to assault a police officer or kill a police officer, and I’m not going to allow that,” he said. “My officers should be able to go out here and work in the neighborhoods and keep this city safe without fear and without hesitation.”

What a crock of crap.  Lot’s of PR from the LEO leadership – aided by the media to prevent injury to THEM – what about acts to prevent them from injuring us

BIKERNET READER REQUESTS STREETWALKER EXHAUST SYSTEM– Bandit tells me that you like the pipe we did on the Bully bike, that was one of my favorites. I had every intention of going into production after I protyped it for the Bully. There have been a number of them done by other builders that are similar, so I tried to make ours stand from the others.

Everything worked out well on the pipe but I put in so many hours making the one piece heat shield and the complicated entry of the back pipe into the collector that there wasn’t any way to put the pipe into production and make it cost effective. I didn’t want to make concessions to the pipe that would have allowed it to be mass produced and ultimately look like the others in the market, so I never made any more.

I’ve been asked many times to make another set but there is just no way to charge for all the hours it took to make them so I’ve just decline.

That’s the Bully pipe story in a nutshell, maybe you can find another set that we do have in production that would work for you. You can get a similar look from our FMJ’s check them out.

BIKERNET SHOP BOOK DEAL OF THE WEEK: Advanced Custom Painting Book by Jon Kosmoski–From Wolfgang Publications and legendary custom painter Jon Kosmoski comes the book: Advanced Custom Painting Techniques. Over 400 photos by well-known photographer Tim Remus bring to life Jon’s explanations of preparation, gun control, paint application, use of color-change materials, metallic basecoats, and how to design and tapeout complex designs.

Whether that painting project in the garage rolls on two wheels or four, this how-to book from Jon Kosmoski is sure to answer your questions. Jon starts with discussions of Shop Set Up, Gun Control, and Modern Paints then moves quickly to the real meat of this book. Four start-to-finish sequences illustrate exactly what it takes to do a complete paint job – with art – from bare metal to finished flames. The painting sequences include two motorcycles and two 4-wheelers.

If you’re ready to tackle a paint job by yourself, this book provides everything you need, from how to prepare the surface, to paint mixing, to proper gun control. And if you’re trying to take your custom painting to the next level, let Jon Kosmoski explain the finer points of applying kandies and pearls.

RIDERS ASKED TO OPPOSE GEORGIA MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS– The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is urging riders nationwide to contact Georgia Gov.Nathan Deal to urge him to stop the Georgia State Patrol from conducting any motorcycle-only traffic checkpoints.

Tens of thousands of motorcyclists from around the nation could be subject to Georgia motorcycle-only checkpoints if those checkpoints are in place before, during and after Daytona (Fla.) Bike Week, which runs March 4-13.

Ed Moreland, AMA senior vice president for government affairs, suggests that riders contact the governor through the AMA website at http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/rights/issueslegislation   and ask that any motorcycle-only checkpoints be suspended until key questions are answered. Those questions, which have been posed by the AMA to Deal and other officials, include: How do motorcycle-only checkpoints increase the safety of motorcyclists? Where do states draw their authority to conduct motorcycle-only checkpoints? Is “probable cause” required to stop a motorcycle and, if so, what constitutes probable cause?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave Georgia a $70,000 grant to conduct one or more roadside motorcycle-only checkpoints. New York state has operated a similar program. The AMA has been tracking this disturbing development of motorcycle-only checkpoints since it first appeared in New York several years ago.

“The AMA believes that the primary source of motorcycle safety is in motorcycle crash prevention and not in arbitrarily pulling over riders and randomly subjecting them to roadside inspections,” Moreland said.

“The NHTSA should focus on decreasing the likelihood of crashes from occurring in the first place,” Moreland said. “No public money should be applied to promoting such a program without first addressing questions from the motorcycling community,” he said.

In addition to letters submitted to the past and present governors of Georgia, the AMA has questioned the potential discriminatory and legal nature of this program and submitted a list of questions for clarification to the New York State Police concerning that agency’s program.

The AMA also sent a letter to NHTSA Administrator David Strickland urging him to suspend the grant program that gives states money for motorcycle-only checkpoints until questions have been addressed.

BIKERNET DISCOVERY–Mechanic friend was given old service manuals from the shop where he works and he brought them to show me…a full binder from the 1958 H-D service manual as well as a hand full of other, later manuals.

It’s like MAGIC to get to read and touch these old pages! I’ve been sniffing up the odor of grease and exhaust, bike grime and man sweat on the cruddy old pages. I LOVE it..I can’t stop smelling them….gives me goose bumps and palpitations. Is there something wrong with me…?

Often in our case, it’s their prized and loved motorcycles and trikes.  We have customers from all walks of life, many with a great sense for humor. One of our customers shared the following quotes with us this week. We thought you’d enjoy them too. Here they are:

1. Don’t worry about avoiding temptation.  As you grow older, it will avoid you.

– Winston Churchill

2. Maybe it’s true that life begins at fifty . . . but everything else starts to wear out, fall out, or spread out.

– Phyllis Diller

3. By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he’s too old to go anywhere.

– Billy Crystal

4. I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury.

– Groucho Marx

5. Only Irish coffee provides all four essential food groups in a single glass: caffeine, sugar, fat and alcohol.

– Alex Levine

And lastly for today, #6:

We could certainly slow the aging process down if it had to work its way through Congress.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDINGS, FOUR Unhealthy Snacks–Last week we discussed Four Healthy Snacks; today we look at four snacks to avoid, and offer healthier alternatives.

1. Doughnuts. High in sugar, trans-fats, calories and refined flour, doughnuts are not only bad for your waistline, but bad for your energy levels as well. The high sugar content is likely to end in a midday crash. If you crave a doughnut, try a piece of whole-grain bread with some jam and peanut butter instead.

2. Soft Drinks. There just isn’t anything nutritious about soda, whether it’s diet or regular. Instead of a soda, try some sparkling water with a bit of fruit juice – you’ll get the carbonation without all the empty calories.

3. French Fries. Actually anything fried – from chicken to potatoes to onions to cheese – should be avoided. Deep-fried foods contain altered fats that are detrimental to the body. If you want finger foods, opt for carrot and celery sticks.

4. Instant Soup. Very high in sodium, instant soup generally offers little health benefit in proportion to its sodium count. Your total daily intake of sodium should not exceed 2,400 mg and one serving of instant soup contains around 500 mg (some kinds of Ramen-style soup are even worse, offering up about one-third of a day’s recommended sodium.) A better option is low-sodium vegetable broth with part whole wheat and buckwheat noodles such as Japanese soba or udon.

LATEST ON THE FLORIDA VERTICAL TAG LAW–What a confusing mess it is to try and figure this all out!

Anyhow, I think I got it figured out. Here’s my researched opinion, but keep in mind I am not a crook with a law degree.

It all comes down to how the cop writes the citation.
If you give them any grief, it appears they could cite 316.1926 (1) rather than 316.2085 (3). I might be reading it wrong. It might be that they can only write 316.1926 (1) if you are also charged with something else, which is why they call it “Additional offenses.” To truly figure it out requires digging in to find out what the police use as their code of regulations, and I couldn’t go there tonight.

Let’s just assume you are cited for 316.2085 (3)

At the end of 316.2085 it clearly states,

(7) A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation as provided in chapter 318.

316.1926 Additional offenses clearly states
(1) A person who violates the provisions of s. 316.2085  (2) or (3) shall be cited for a moving violation, punishable as provided in chapter 318.

So, now, looking at Chapter 318  we find 318.14 Noncriminal traffic infractions; exception; procedures.

We look through 318.14 for either 316.2085(3) or 316.1926 and if neither is found look through Chapter 318 for noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation. 316.2085(3) is not found, but 316.1926 is. It is mentioned in (13)(a).

318.14(13)(a) A person cited for a violation of s. 316.1926  shall, in addition to any other requirements provided in this section, pay a fine of $1,000.

The way I interpret this is that if you are cited for 316.2085(3) but not cited for 316.1926(1), then (13)(a) does NOT apply since you were not cited for a violation of 316.1926.

Since you were cited for 316.2085(3), and that is not mentioned in 318.14, to find out what the fine is, go to 318.18

318.18 Amount of penalties (3)(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, $60 for all moving violations not requiring a mandatory appearance.

The way I arrive at that is, since 316.2085 is not referenced, and the first two paragraphs don’t apply, it appears that the fine is $60 for a first offense, provided you are cited for 316.2085(3) and not 316.1926

However, if a person is cited for violation of 316.1926(1), then “yall are in a heap o’ trouble boy”. If you get cited for it more than once, they’ll own you and the horse you rode in on!

Obviously, insanity and public disservice is quite abundant throughout the Florida legislature. The bunch of them should be taken outside and put in a pillory at the start of every session. Then, perhaps, they will remember it is wrong to abuse the trust placed in them by mistreating and criminalizing people who have done nobody any harm. It is unfortunate that you do not have a motorcyclist rights organization to stand up to them. Those safety nannies masquerading as rights advocates don’t cut the mustard.

You ask about why someone has to put a transponder on their motorcycle if they have no use for it. Well, they don’t. They can put the plate on horizontal. If Rogue puts a toll both in his driveway, I suppose he can sell some cheap transponders to everyone and sell them all a lifetime pass, and then people can have vertical plates without having to pay the toll road robber barons. (pssst…just don’t tell everyone your address).

Florida toll road robber barons are lobbying legislators to force transponders onto everything. Travelers to Florida need to know about the toll road rental scams such as this one:  http://alerts.motorists.org/nma-email-newsletter-issue-106

Jan,  I and everyone else agrees to the section that is bolded.  That is the statue that says if you have a toll transponder you can run a vertical tag.  I do not see where the fine for that is listed.

There is also another statue as per Attorney Brad Sinclair and Imre from the AMA as posted on Bikernet. That statue says what the high fine is.

The cop can and will still stop the motorcycle to confirm it does have a transponder. When the motorcyclist is stopped the twenty questions are asked. This sometimes leads to additional charges. Some of the cops do not know or are saying they do not know of that law and are citing the riders under a different law.

It is pretty much an assured thing if you run a vertical tag in Florida you are going to get stopped. It then depends which statue the ticket is written under.

Why does some one have to put a toll transponder on their motorcycle if they have no use for it. What does having a transponder have to do with a license plate?

I can operate the clutch with my hand, the problem is I am unable to maneuver the shifter with my foot. Can you offer any insight?

ABSOLUT CHOPPERS NOW AVAILABLE AS PRODUCTION BIKES IN EUROPE– After years in manufacturing chopper frames for enthusiasts round the world with an old fashion Swedish blacksmith tradition that goes back to the 1000`s century of the Viking’s.

Precision handcrafted to tight tolerance with high quality Swedish steel. Completely welded, then heat treated and cooled in the fixture.

Due to this precision craftsmanship the production is not a high volume product. It is tested among others by a Round the World trip on a rigid Chopper 45.000 km (30.000 miles) and also thru TUV in Germany to meet the highest standard.

People started to talk a few years back about the problems to get long forks and custom bikes legal in a lot of countries. Then we start to plan what to do for all the enthusiasts, our passion and business for Choppers, at the S&S 50th Anniversary we had some interesting talk with the crew (Kurt Pettersson, Charlie Hadayia, etc.) to make a special engine for our new project. A Hi-Tech engine with the classic look, good performance and emission legal. Finally, when this goal was reached, the work was to sort out what we had been riding and building for over almost 30 years.

The focus was on Swedish made parts for the chassis, with deep research and development with manufacturers started for parts with function, reliability, clean design and for performance. Transmission and belt drive is US made with our design. The best electronic equipment was found in Germany.

Over the last 25 years the shows and publishing of our exotic long, lean and clean choppers did help us to believe that there is a market for our “Swedish Style” choppers with the E-type approval!

It has not been an easy way to go, but now we are finally finished and the COC license is ours.  To start the production we have focused on two models, “The Icelander,” Chopper for passenger and with touring in mind. “The Black Ice,” is a mean chopper with attitude (the dark side).

”The Icelander”:                                                                                                                             Natural drive line with S&S rocker covers. Brushed Aluminum parts (Hand/Foot Contr. Calipers, Lower fork/ tr.trees). 1 Colour paint, Plain leather seat/grips, Rebuffini Ellipse foot pegs. Polished S-S spoke wheels, Satin Stainless Steel parts ( Chain guard, Lic.plate/ Top motor mount, Transmission plate and Master cyl.bracket). Polished Long H-bar & Sissy bar. Wizard Explorer tanks.

“The Black Ice”

Black drive line ( Polished Crankcase/ Tr. Case & Covingtons rocker covers). Black pkg: Fork/Calipers/ Hand contr./ Headlight/ Belt cover/ Turn signals/ Forward controls Rebuffinis Comet Black/ grips. 1 Colour paint, Luxury leather seat, Polished S-S parts (H-bar, Ch.guard, Lic.plate/ Top motor mount and Transmission plate with Master cylinder bracket). WHEELER RACING REPORT…..Target 200 MPH…………2011–BUSA SUSPENSION..FRAME…..new build

Slow but productive week in San Jose at Wheeler Racing with a couple of changes that will make life easier in the quest for 200 mph.

The build is coming together fairly quickly . We now have the suspension off of a late model Busa, while the frame is scheduled for a mid-march, on-the-frame-table get-it-done-mode, all of the major pieces are in place.

107″ EVO MOTOR….new build Consulted with Duncan at Yankee Engineeuity in San Jose. We’re building a fresh, new, 107″ Evo motor that will run an inter-cooled turbo charger. Tame as a kitten until you squeeze the trigger, then hang on to your hat, it’s gonna haul ass on the street, the strip and at Bonneville.

2004 TURBO DYNA …daily rider: After 4,000 miles the past two months the Dyna has developed a leak in the front head gasket. The men at Hardtailz are removing the heads and cylinders for a trip to Hannan’s Machine in Hayward . We will O-ring and or come up with a proper sealing technique to hold the Turbo’s massive input of air and add a little more BOOST, just for the helleva it, once the motor is sealed we might as well have a little more bang for the buck .

BIKERNET HEADQUARTERS…Plan on rollin into the Bikernet area Thursday evening providing we’re not knee deep in snow on the west coast.

Think Healthy, Haul Ass and Ride for your LIfe!

HISTORIC GM FUTURLINER BUS LEADS PARADE OF COLLECTOR CARS AT ‘AUBURN SPRING’ EVENT– Auctions America by RM to present inaugural ‘Auburn Spring’ collector car auction May 12-15, 2011

Highly-regarded Carlisle Events to host its first swap meet and car corral outside of Pennsylvania

AUBURN, Ind. (February 23, 2011) − An unrestored Futurliner bus from GM’s ‘Parade of Progress’ of the 1940s and ‘50s is an early star consignment for the expected roster of 1,000 quality motor cars and motorcycles going up for bids when Auctions America by RM opens the gates at its famous 235-acre Auburn Auction Park May 12 – 15 for its inaugural Auburn Spring event.

To add to the weekend’s excitement, the park grounds will be buzzing with the hundreds of vendors who will set up shop on the swap meet field and in the car corral, coordinated by the respected Pennsylvania-based Carlisle Events.

“It’s been a long, hard winter, but spring fever is about to hit the Midwest and we’re ready to put on a not-to-be-missed show with our new partner, Carlisle Events,” said Donnie Gould, President, Auctions America by RM. “Automotive enthusiasts can look forward to this first Auburn Spring event becoming a permanent fixture on the collector car calendar year over year.”

An unrestored GM Futurliner bus, one of 12 built and eight known to still exist, is going under the hammer in Auburn with an auction estimate of $450,000 to $600,000. In highly original condition, it has recently been equipped with eight new tires, a new plexiglass windshield and all-new rubber and metal siding.

These futuristically-styled buses, measuring 11 feet high and 33 feet long, were designed by Harley Earl and originally built in 1940 and refurbished in the early 1950s. They travelled the highways and byways of the United States to demonstrate General Motors’ new automobiles and technology to American consumers.

As a bonus, the faithfully restored Futurliner from the National Automotive and Truck Museum of the United States (NATMUS) collection will be on exhibit at the event. Automotive archaeologist, Joe Bortz – known for rescuing five Futurliners from destruction in the early 1980s and responsible for donating this particular bus to NATMUS – will be on hand for demonstrations over the course of the weekend.  Auburn Spring represents the first time that a restored and unrestored example of these iconic machines is together on public display.

For complete event and consignment information for Auburn Spring, please call Auctions America by RM on +1 260-927-9797 or visit www.auctionsamerica.com.
