PRE-DAYTONA THURSDAY NEWS FOR MARCH 7, 2013

Hey,

This is such a crazy year. Each week seems to fly by, then another month. Can’t seem to accomplish anything fast enough.

Here’s a hot one. I mentioned JIMS 116-inch engines. They produce a consistent 131 horses and torque with Branch heads. Eric Bennett is about to install a D&D system, a Power Commander, and I believe a high flow air cleaner on a stock 103-inch Dyna. We are going to dyno it before and after the install. Then we are going to compare those numbers with Eric’s Twin Cam 103-inch S&S kit build, with Branch heads, and S&S cams.

We will create an engine upgrade configuration and power chart. It’s going to be interesting as we decide on the best, most efficient engine configuration for our next Bonneville Project.

Let’s hit the news.

The Thursday News is Sponsored by IronWorks Magazine

ABOUT THE RIGHT TO REPAIR ACT– The Right to Repair Act is bipartisan legislation that would require automakers to provide the same service information and tools to independent auto and maintenance shops, as well as to consumers, that the automaker dealership service centers receive.

It further instructs the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to provide oversight and enforcement of the bill.

As a means of protecting intellectual property, the legislation states that the manufacturers’ proprietary information will not have to be disclosed.

Right to Repair legislation does not attempt to restrict motorists from choosing car dealerships, it simply ensures that vehicle owners have a choice when deciding where to take their vehicles for repairs and what parts are best to use in maintaining their vehicles.

The Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association and the Coalition for Auto Repair Equality urge Congress to support the Right to Repair Act to give consumers a choice and keep repair costs down. It’s the right thing to do for consumers, for business and the economy.

Global Right to Repair

The European Union has passed Right to Repair and an aggressive effort is currently underway in Canada. Right to repair is clearly a global issue whose time has come.

What Right to Repair Does:

Reaffirms the owners’ right to repair their automobile and keep their families safe.

Promotes consumer safety by allowing owners or their auto technicians’ access to the computers that control the systems and components that affect the safe operation of their automobiles.

Permits owners to choose the repair shop and the replacement parts to service and maintain their vehicles.

Authorizes the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to promulgate regulations to protect consumers and to promote competition in auto maintenance and repair.

What It Does Not Do:

It does not take a manufacturer’s intellectual property.
It does not affect the dealer’s warranty agreement with the vehicle manufacturers.
It does not require manufacturers to disclose manufacturing processes or trade secrets.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT BUDGETARY WORD OF THE DAY–mazuma muh-ZOO-muh, noun:
money.

…and I want mazuma, gelt, coin, rocks, or what have you!

— Harry Stephen Keeler, The Riddle of the Yellow Zuri, 1930

The American’s hostility to what is beautiful and charming — a hostility as deeply rooted in him as his belief in the omnipotence of mazuma and God — finds its best illustration in a reconnaissance of all those originally placid and lovely spots of his own country which, with what would seem to be a flagellant’s glee, he has debased and made hideous.

— George Jean Nathan, “Clinical Notes,” American Mercury Magazine, 1927

Mazuma is a Yiddish word that comes to English from the Mishnaic Hebrew term mezumman. This term literally translates to “designated,” “fixed,” or “appointed,” though it was used figuratively to refer to “cash” in Medieval Hebrew.

11 STATES HAVE MORE PEOPLE ON WELFAIRE THAN THEY DO EMPLOYED–  The Senate Budget Committee reported that in fiscal year 2011 (between food stamps, housing support, child care, Medicaid and other benefits) the average U.S. household below the poverty line received $168.00 a day in government support.

What’s the problem with that much support?

Well, the median household income in America is just over $50,000, which averages out to $137.13 a day.

To put it another way, being on welfare now pays the equivalent of $30.00 an hour for a 40-hour week, while the average job pays $25.00 an hour.

That’s correct, those on welfare (not working) make more than those who work for their living.

NO REST FOR THE WICKED!–It’s only been a couple of short seasons during which Jody Perewitz set numerous M/C land speed records including Fastest Women on an American V-Twin. But, as they say, there’s no rest for the wicked, and Jody is unquestionably all of that.

While 2013 will certainly see even more MC records for Jody she will also be campaigning on 4 wheels with the intent of running over 208mph. If successful, and with her talent and drive it’s only a matter of time, Jody would become the Fastest Women running an American Car and Bike! Now that’s a target worth zeroing in on.

Here weapon of choice? Try Billy Amaral’s awesome 1979 Chevy Camaro. This high-tech, fully street legal beast is powered by a naturally aspirated 522ci Amaral BBC churning our close to 900hp of American Muscle. One reason for choosing this particular vehicle is that Team Amaral has already taken it into the record books with passes of 217 mph in the 1 ½ mile and 201 in the mile.

So how does she really feel about such a lofty goal? Pumped hardly conveys her attitude. “My best time last year was 197 at Bonneville and 194 at the Ohio Mile. (194 was my last run of day in OH! If I had one more I know I could have gone high 190’s!) I will run the Camaro on both the mile and mile and half. We are going to race in Maine in July, then Ohio and then Maine again.
“Did I tell you that I am WICKED excited to race?!?!?!?!?!?! 🙂 “

DNA SPRINGER ALERT—We recently ran across another busted DNA springer. I realize they are cheap and made overseas, but your life relies on a quality front end.

DNA basically copied the master of Springer manufacturers, Paughco. Paughco front ends don’t break and are quality made in the United States. Sure they cost more, but they are well worth it.

We have also run into ordering problems at DNA. Make sure they have the product in stock before you order.

BELL COMBINES INK AND IRON IN UNIQUE “GO ROGUE” MARKETING CAMPAIGN–On the heels of unveiling its new Rogue helmet, Bell today announced the details of an equally unique “Go Rogue” marketing campaign and consumer promotion that will send one lucky motorcyclist to the 2013 Sturgis motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota.

Bell’s innovative new Rogue helmet bridges the gap between the open-face and full-face categories and is primarily aimed toward cruiser riders who seek an open face helmet that provides an increased level of facial coverage for colder or harsh weather and road conditions. The Rogue campaign champions the free-spirited and oft-rebellious lifestyle that’s associated with this unique category of American motorcycle culture, and no destination event celebrates the “biker” lifestyle or the notion of “going Rogue” better than the legendary Sturgis rally.

At the forefront of Bell’s “Go Rogue” campaign is renowned American tattoo artist, Corey Miller. Miller is widely considered one of the true American “masters” of ink on skin, after decades spent honing his craft on the widest range of individuals – from underground outlaws and gangsters to the Hollywood and music industry elite. Miller’s five-year run on the popular TLC series “L.A. Ink,” provided a mainstream national and global stage for Miller’s masterful techniques in both traditional black and grey and vivid color work, catapulting Miller’s status from that of underground inkslinger to globally recognized artist. Bell tapped Miller not solely because of his masterful tattoo work, but also because of a passion for motorcycling that dates back to his childhood, riding dirt bikes in the foothills of San Bernardino County.

“I think most would agree that motorcycles and tattoos have always gone hand-in-hand, and I was thrilled when Bell approached me to get involved with them and the new Rogue helmet.” said Miller. “I can remember tattooing some local bikers in a beat up apartment for my first motorcycle – a chopped ‘57 rigid frame with a ’73 Shovelhead. I ran a Bell Moto 3 for years, back in the day.”

Miller will be featured in Bell’s print and digital advertising campaign for the Rogue helmet, as well as be featured in a special Rogue video, capturing the unique lifestyle of the Southern California native and tattoo savant. The video portrays a day in the life of Miller, from slinging ink at his Upland, Calif., tattoo shop “Six Feet Under,” to riding motorcycles on the back streets of Los Angeles, to his other passion, playing drums with his instrumental surf rock power trio “Powerflex 5.”

“I’ve been doing the same thing for 30 years…,” Miller states in the video. “…Tattooing, playing drums and riding motorcycles. It’s not a bad gig.”

Bell’s “Go Rogue” marketing campaign is capped off by the national consumer promotion, offering the grand prize trip to the 2013 Sturgis motorcycle rally. In addition to the trip to Sturgis, the winner will also earn the right to be tattooed by Miller. Behind every tattoo is a personal story. To this point, Bell is asking consumers to compete for the trip to Sturgis by visiting the Bell Powersports page on Facebook and telling the unique story behind the tattoo they want from Miller. In addition to the grand prize trip to Sturgis and Corey Miller tattoo, Bell will also be giving away Rogue helmets and Bell apparel as additional prizes. The contest runs from March 5 through May 7th with seven weekly winners earning helmets and t-shirts and the grand prize winner being selected from the total pool of entrants at the end of the contest period. Consumers can enter the contest by visiting https://www.facebook.com/BellPowersports.

For more information regarding Bell helmets, Rogue and the “Go Rogue” marketing campaign, visit www.bellhelmets.com or visit Bell on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/BellPowersports.

QUICKIE ABOUT TERRY THE TRAMP–I started an email to you last night – after I read the preface of Terry the Tramp. Your narrative describing the genesis of American rebel motorcycle culture in general and outlaw culture in specific is the most approachable and complete explanation I’ve ever encountered of the phenomenon.

Most references blow if off in a couple of sentences about WWII vets, but your assessment showed thorough research and analysis – revealing undercurrents that contributed.

The detrimental actions of the AMA president and those tactics related to obscuring sales of foreign bikes in the US were pivotal factors, but they seldom come to the surface as having played a role. And maybe it’s because I’m a baby boomer myself, but your references to song titles act as the perfect touchstones to mark the times – and also indicate how the times changed.

Now I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the book!

UNCLE MONKEY ON ZOTS–For those of you who regularly read my articles you are not surprised that I’m a hands-on kind of person. That being said I know my limitations. I recently had to hire electricians to wire in a new electrical service to my house. It was a big job and one that I would eagerly attempt having pulled enough wire under the supervision of Journeymen Electricians that I’m confident I could do.

Today society runs on electricity but the prospect of being without power for an extended time was not acceptable to Mrs. Monkey or me, so I had to hire professionals.

I was dumbfounded to get repeated calls asking how things work, why things were the way they were. In the last hundred years electricity has gone from knob and tube, to single wire, to two wire, aluminum to copper and everything else. I don’t know what others had done in their house or why it had been done that way.

Frustrated, my pro phoned me to tell me that the lights in the dining room would not work. He had spent over an hour working on them and it was an impossible situation. That night as I walked into the dining room I turned on the other three way switch to the dining room lights. To my surprise they came on. I tried the opposite light switch that he had spent an hour working on and he was right it didn’t work, so I removed the switch and flipped the two wires. Voila the lights work properly from both switches. I took me thirty seconds to fix something he couldn’t understand, something that he was trained to understand, trained to troubleshoot, trained to repair, something that he has spent the last twenty years doing.

He is not the only tradesman I’ve found to be that way. Plumbers who could not install garden hose connections, Body men who couldn’t repair small dents or make simple patch panels. I don’t consider myself to be old school or really that old, but I fondly remember the days when you hired a professional they were able to do the work. If a customer wants a toilet installed in the middle of his living room it shouldn’t be a problem, it might not be easy but everything is possible if your wallet is thick enough. A faulty light switch should not be a stumbling block.

It was a can do attitude that built this country, helped to define this country. Hard working men and women, who worked with their hands, learned how things worked and understood why. They were problem solvers. They built bridges where they said bridges could not be built, dammed rivers they said could never be tamed, installed motors into bicycles igniting a fire that burns in all of us.

We’ve become a disposable society, an instant gratification society. Why fix when we can throw it away and buy new ones. If you work in a trade be passionate about your trade, learn as much as you can and never stop believing you can do it.

BIKERNET NEW PRODUCT OF THE WEEK MOTORCYCLE SECURITY STRAPS-– Losing Your Cool? Check these locking Straps, from LockStraps.

http://www.lockstraps.com/

Remember “The Club”, unless you were actually clubbing the thief with it, virtually useless as an anti theft device. Not much can stop a professional thief (except a good knock upside the head) if they’re intent on stealing your stuff. Coupla beefy dudes can toss that beloved chopper in the back of a Van in seconds.

Lucky for us the three most likely bikes to get stolen are the Suzuki GSX-R, Yamaha YZF and Honda CBR Series. That still doesn’t mean your 28K H-D isn’t up for grabs, even your matching helmet.

As they say, the best defense is a good offense. A wide variety of security options are available and a simple layered approach can be effective we will look at several, including Lock Straps in an upcoming story by Koz Mraz.

An 1939 Indian Restoration Story

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=7307

Glad I found this. Just bought a ‘46 chief. Finally got the Linkert float set right and added electronic ignition. Oil comes out of the cap and runs down the side of the gas tank , could this be overfilled?

I have to replace my clutch plates(using the king plates). Should I isolate the transmission from the primary, and if so how do you do that.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

We’re back on target with a plan aimed at completing our 5-Ball Racing Teams Twin Cam Turbo-Charged Raycer. As of today the hot rod is secured on a Handy Lift at Colorado Customs with a short list, including shift linkage, rear sets, handle-bar set-ups for street and strip with a set of Lyndall Racing composite rotors.

After a pvc mock up, the desired riser height was decided and the team at Colorado Customs designed and whittled out a set of risers, black anodized and aerodynamic. With a set of black anodized, narrowed (motel 6 door ways are fairly narrow) 883 flat tracker bars, located 6 inches above the top tree with the grips at shoulder height/straight ahead, they’ll fit perfect for your basic in town-headed-to-the-highway long-distance-road-miles. A second set of handle bars designed around adjustable clip-ons will be bolted in place with a set of shorter custom cables built to order by Barnett Clutches & Cables for Bonneville and all land speed racing attempts.

EVERY STATE SHOULD PROTECT MOTORCYCLE SAFETY MONEY!–
Ohio Rider education programs HB 35 passed!!!

IT’S THANK YOU TIME !!!!
……………………………..HB 35 passed out the the Ohio House of Representatives by a Floor vote of 62-32 clean of any legislative language detrimental to Ohio’s Motorcycle Rider Education System……………This morning was also an “Informal Hearing” in the Senate Transportation on HB 35 which is where the bill is moving to from the house at which time Summit County State Senator and ABATE Friend Frank LaRose stated “We don’t want to mess with these Bikers” and suggested that the matter of transferring the Rider Ed Funds from a dedicated fund to a Public Safety “slush” fund not even be brought up in marking up (writing) HB 35 in the Senate .

His fellow Committee Members agreed………This news along with the vote today on the House Floor is pretty much the nail in the coffin for the Governor’s proposal in the budget for the transfer of Rider Ed monies out of a dedicated fund that Motorcyclists of Ohio pay six bucks per MC plate into per year into a Public Safety “slush” fund where said monies would be allowed to be appropriated for such things as Operations cost of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. …………………………………………………………………………….

Were going to ask you make one more set of calls; Please call the members BELOW of the Transportation Sub Committee of the Ohio House Finance and Appropriations Committee and THANK THEM FOR PROTECTING THE DEDICATED FUNDS APPROPRIATED FOR OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE RIDER EDUCATION PROGRAM as they were responsible for deleting the transfer language from the substitute HB 35 bill voted on today.

Then call your own State Reps that you may have called and thank them also.
1) 614-466-2038 – Rep. Ross McGregor, chairman
2) 614-466-1308 – Rep. Alicia Reece, ranking minority member
3) 614-466-8114 – Rep. Richard Adams, member
4) 614-466-2473 – Rep. John Patrick Carney, member
5) 614-466-9690 – Rep. Cheryl Grossman, member

ABATE and the AMA will still be watching HB 35 as it moves through the Ohio Senate but we are pretty sure that through your persevering diligence we have saved OUR Ohio Rider Education Program from any future attacks on it’s funding……..

Thank You All and God Bless…….FreddY

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER RESEARCH WITH DR. WEIL– 4 Worst Fast Food Choices. Later we will discuss the healthiest choices to make if you find that you have no alternative to eating fast food. This time, we cover four nutritional pitfalls to avoid when eating at a fast food restaurant.

1.Opt out of cheese and condiments such as mayonnaise and tartar sauce, which can add unhealthy types of fat. Use mustard or vinegar to add flavor as desired.

2.Avoid anything deep-fried. From chicken to potatoes to onions, deep-fried foods contain altered fats that are pro-inflammatory and detrimental to the body.

3.Skip the soda since it has no nutritional value and adds unnecessary calories to an already nutritionally challenged meal. Order plain water instead.

4.Avoid desserts. There are more than enough calories in fast food; there’s no need to add a sugary finale.

MMA HELPS DEFEAT SOUND WARRANT IN YARMOUTH– The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) is pleased to report that a town bylaw proposal was successfully defeated last night in Yarmouth. With short notice, the MMA in concert with the Yarmouth Chief-of-Police and Deputy Chief attended the Board-of-Selectmen meeting last night and were successful in convincing the Board of Selectmen that such a Bylaw would be unsuccessful.

Want to get something essentially illegal passed in Massachusetts? Do so in as covert a manner as possible so that your opponents don’t know about it. Gone are the days of open debate as the Town of Yarmouth once again proposed a bylaw which would essentially require OEM exhaust on all motorcycles entering the town.

Alerted to this proposal being presented mere hours before the meeting, the MMA sprang into response providing testimony and supporting documentation as well as representation at the Selectmen Meeting.

Armed with prior testimony used successfully around the state, including used to overturn a similar bylaw passed in Falmouth and subsequently struck down by the Commonwealth Attorney General, MMA Legislative Director Rick Gleason joined the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Yarmouth Police Department in their argument that Town Bylaws cannot exceed State Law, and that such a measure would essentially be meaningless.

The MMA has long held strong opposition to the use of the OEM EPA Stamp as an enforcement tool simply because it is a consumer protection mechanism, not meant to be used against the consumer. It is also hard to locate on many models of motorcycle, hidden under seats on sport bikes, under saddlebags of cruisers, or simply facing the wrong way for aesthetic reasons. Most critically, per the very regulation that entitles it, it expires in one year or 3,729 miles, whichever comes first!!

Instead, the MMA continues to hold a firm belief that the existing laws on the books are sufficient if properly implemented and enforced, specifically that simple test procedures do exist for muffled exhaust, whether replaced with aftermarket or not, with a reasonable sound level. Further, that Education, not Legislation, is key to changing the behavior of a select few who either remove their mufflers or rev throttles simply to “sound cool”…

The “Education, not Legislation” sentiment was echoed by the Yarmouth Chief-of-Police during his testimony last night. Yarmouth PD has worked with the MMA in the past with great success implementing the MMA’s “When in Town, Throttle Down©” campaign providing correct information on the Massachusetts General Laws and the impact of excessive behaviors. The MMA has also hosted numerous voluntary sound checks around the state to help riders be more aware of the impact of their exhaust.

The MMA applauds the efforts of the Yarmouth PD which can be found on their website and Facebook page, and thanks them for their support.

ARIZONA LAW AGAINST PROFILING MOTORCYCLE RIDERS ON HOLD–
By Howard Fischer

Arizona motorcyclists have apparently lost out in a bid to get special protection from potential police harassment.

On a tie vote, the Senate on Thursday killed legislation which would have required that police officer training include courses that “emphasize the prohibition against motorcycle profiling.” The vote came despite the pleadings of Sen. Judy Burges, R-Sun City West.

“It’s kind of frustrating when you’re pulled over and someone points a gun at you,” she told colleagues.

SB 1086 would have mandated that officers be training that “the sole fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related paraphernalia” is not, by itself, the basis to stop, question or search someone.

Sen. Steve Yarbrough, R-Chandler, said there already are plenty of court rulings that spell out when police officers can use “profiles” of suspected lawbreakers to stop them. And he said police officers in learn about those standards during their training.

He said there is no reason to single out special mention of certain groups that are entitled to special mention.

“How ’bout persons who wear military uniforms?” Yarbrough asked. “Certainly they ought to be included as a protected class.”
Ditto for young people.

“Or what about little old ladies with grey hair?” he continued.

“I are one of those little old ladies with grey hair,” Burgess quipped in response. And she said a similar anti-profiling training requirement adopted by the state of Washington works “very well.”

Former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty prepares for 19th Anniversary Charity Ride Across America–  Motorcycle trek raises funds to support chronically ill children, Victory Junction

During a weeklong event this spring, former NASCAR driver and racing analyst Kyle Petty will lead more than 175 motorcycle riders on a cross-country motorcycle trek to benefit Victory Junction.

The 19th Anniversary Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America presented by Manheim will commence on April 27 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and extend 2,100 miles before finishing in Tempe, Arizona on May 3. The Charity Ride raises funds and awareness for Victory Junction, a camp created to enrich the lives of children with chronic medical illnesses.

“Over the years, the Ride has turned into so much more than we ever anticipated,” said Petty, who started the Ride as a small group of friends riding from track to track across the country. “I’m grateful for the chance to spend time with friends, while meeting fans and generous supporters who ultimately help create memorable and fun camp experiences for wonderful children and their families.”

The 2013 Schedule includes overnight stops in:

•Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to Boise, Idaho (April 27)
•Boise, Idaho to Jackson, Wyo. (April 28)
•Jackson, Wyo. to Green River, Wyo. (April 29)
•Green River, Wyo. to Grand Junction, Colo. (April 30)
•Grand Junction, Colo. to Durango, Colo. (May 1)
•Durango, Colo. to Show Low, Ariz. (May 2)
•Show Low, Ariz. to Tempe, Ariz. (May 3)

According to Herschel Walker, former NFL great and 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, he enjoys the camaraderie among the riders each year, as well as seeing Petty interact with the crowds.

“Kyle is incredible. He works so hard and cares so much about the riders, the Charity Ride and the children who attend Victory Junction,” said Walker, who is participating in his 8th Charity Ride this year. “It’s truly a blessing to be a part of this experience.”

Spectators, visitors and residents are encouraged to visit one of the daily scheduled fuel stops or overnight locations to show support for the riders, meet Petty and also contribute to the Charity Ride’s “Small Change. Big Impact.” program that benefits children with chronic illnesses.

In the last nine years, more than 7,650 children have attended Victory Junction at no cost to their families, thanks to the Kyle Petty Charity Ride. The camp has served as the Ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by the Petty family in 2004 in honor of their late son, Adam.

The 2013 Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America is made possible by presenting sponsor Manheim, as well as Coca-Cola, Pilot Flying J, Racing Electronics, FLUIDYNE Racing Products, WinCraft Racing, Krispy Kreme, FGX International and the Petty Family Foundation.

“Manheim is extremely proud to sponsor the Kyle Petty Charity Ride through 2015,” said Nick Peluso, Manheim senior vice president of customer management. “Previously having sponsored the Ride, Manheim values the national awareness it brings to chronic illness and enriching the lives of children who live with chronic illness. Giving back is definitely a priority for Manheim and our parent company COX; we are looking forward to our three-year sponsorship.”

Individuals can follow Petty and the riders live by visiting www.facebook.com/KPCharityRide or on Twitter @KylePetty and @KPCharityRide.

OLD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–  A State Trooper was patrolling late at night off the main highway. He sees a couple in a car, in lovers’ lane, with the interior light brightly glowing. He carefully approaches the car to get a closer look. Then he sees a young man behind the wheel, reading Easyriders magazine. He immediately notices a young woman in the rear seat, filing her fingernails. Puzzled by this surprising situation, the trooper walks to the car and gently raps on the driver’s window.

The young man lowers his window. ‘Uh, yes, Officer’?

The trooper asks: ‘What are you doing?’

The young man says: ‘Well, Officer, I’m reading Easyriders magazine.’

Pointing towards the young woman in the back seat the trooper says: ‘And her, what is she doing?’

The young man shrugs: ‘Sir, I believe she’s filing her fingernails.’ Now, the trooper is totally confused. A young couple, alone, in a car, at night in a lover’s lane and nothing obscene is happening!

The trooper asks: ‘How old are you young man?’
The young man replies.

‘I am 22 sir.’The trooper asks,

‘How old is she?’

He replies, Well sir, in 11 minutes she will be 18.’

RED LIGHT CAMERAS ISSUE–The Answer Is a Longer Yellow. Red-light cameras have become a lucrative but corrupt form of taxation.

— By HOLMAN W. JENKINS, JR.

In Chicago, voters are familiar with human nature. This may explain why no one believes Mayor Rahm Emanuel when he says concern for children is the motive for his promotion of anti-speeding cameras to milk money from the city’s motorists.

A Chicago Tribune poll finds even those most inclined to support the cameras were cynical about Mayor Rahm’s motives: “Senior citizens and women voters were evenly split on whether they favored or opposed cameras, but they showed broad consensus that they believed Emanuel sought cameras to raise revenue, not save lives.”

When governments are engaged in sleazy new forms of taxation, sleaze happens. In fact, speed cameras were the mayor’s consolation prize—which he hopes will generate $20 million a year in revenue—when Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn nixed his plea for casino gambling in the city.

And sleaze has happened, not unlike the scandals that two decades ago engulfed the private companies that run state lotteries. Last week three executives of Redflex Traffic Systems, an Australia-owned company that operates Chicago’s cameras, were fired over an alleged $2 million graft campaign aimed at the local official who oversaw the city’s camera contract, including gifts of Super Bowl tickets and trips to White Sox spring training.

Then again, the reputation of this disguised form of taxation has been plunging everywhere. Los Angeles, amid public outrage, suspended its camera program when it came out that most tickets went to harmless perpetrators of the “California roll”—failing to stop completely before making a legal right on red. Even more so when it was discovered that, in keeping with maximizing profits, the city wasn’t chasing down those who didn’t pay. Why bother when it’s so easy to click off a few more photos and dun those citizen who pay up the moment a ticket arrives in the mail?

Baltimore’s camera program has been in turmoil since a November Baltimore Sun investigation revealed that misfiring speed cameras had been allowed to issue tickets to non-speeding and even motionless vehicles.

“If the goal of employing red-light camera systems is to improve driver safety, the data suggest that the program has failed,” New Jersey state Sen. Michael Doherty wrote in the Trenton Times in December.

New Jersey’s experience shows that revenues fall off sharply once drivers become aware of the cameras—but accidents don’t. Serious T-bones at intersections occur not because a driver willfully ignores a red light but because he’s not paying attention—which cameras don’t help.

Meanwhile, numerous studies, including an in-depth federal report, confirm that red-light cameras are associated with an increase in rear-end collisions as drivers slam on the brakes.

Virtually all now understand that the best way to decrease crashes at problem intersections is a longer yellow. In Tampa, hundreds appear to have received tickets because a busy yellow was set at three seconds when the state minimum is 4.5. In Georgia, after a new state law adding a second to the yellow, several towns canceled their camera programs as no longer profitable.

GUN NUT REPORT–“This morning, I lucked out and was able to buy several cases of ammo. On the way home, I stopped at the gas station, and this drop-dead-gorgeous redhead was filling up her car at the next pump.”

She looked at the ammo in the back of my pickup and said in a very sexy voice, “I believe in barter, big boy. Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?”

I thought it over for a few seconds and responded, “Well, just what kind of ammo have you got to trade?”

AND NOW BY POPULAR DEMAND FROM THE BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER–  Four Best Fast-Food Choices, while you are roaming the streets of Daytona. Even if you are diligent about packing healthful foods when traveling, or finding restaurants with nutritious choices when eating out, there may be times when your healthy dining options are limited. While I suggest you avoid eating fast food entirely, if you must, please keep the following in mind when ordering:

1.No matter how hungry you are, you are better off ordering a small amount of food and making up for it with healthier foods later.

2.Pile on the lettuce, tomato and other vegetables that come with your order, to add some fiber and antioxidants.

3.Go for the salad – this option is now commonly available at fast-food establishments.

4.Ask to see a list of the nutritional content of menu items. Some restaurants have them posted – if they don’t, ask for them, and then ask yourself if you really want to eat there.

We have passed the cutoff date for committees to move bills out. Now the House and Senate will go into session almost exclusively from now until 17:00 on March 13th. Then the respective chambers will begin work on the bills that have “come across” from the other side.

House Action

In the House there are three motorcycle bills that have been passed through from the Senate and sent to the Transportation Committee.
•SB 5141 (Malfunctioning Traffic Signals)
•SB 5142 (Putting motorcycles into the Commute Trip Reduction Act)
•SB 5263 (Concerning Motorcycles Overtaking and Passing Pedestrians and Bicyclists)

I have already met with Representative Clibborn (D-41) on Wednesday concerning getting these bills on the hearing schedule as soon as the House begins to work on Senate bills. She gave no indication that there would be any difficulty getting hearings, but no promises were made.

Immediate Action Alert

HB 1238 (Malfunctioning Traffic Signals) is not dead, but it is fast approaching being on life support. We are working hard to get a “Rules pull” to the floor for action, but things are beginning to stack up. All riders need to contact their representatives and ensure that they are fully aware of the issue and press for them to ask the members of the Rules committee to move the bill to the floor. This needs to happen as soon as possible.

Senate Action

HB 1334 (Concerning Conversion Kits on Motorcycles) has passed the House and been sent to Senate Transportation. I have already briefed staff for both Co-Chairs asking for an early hearing for this bill and for HB 1238 (Malfunctioning Traffic Signals) if it gets out of the House. I will continue to keep the lines of communication open as we approach committee scheduling for the 14th and beyond.

Action Needed

Now, drop the mouse and get on the phone to contact your representatives. We need the switchboards to light up pushing to get HB 1238 (Malfunctioning Traffic Signals) onto the floor and passed.

We need to get this done on as soon as possible.

HANG ON FOR AN 85MPH SPEED LIMIT IN NEVADA–Bill could lead to highway speeds up to 85 mph?On rural highways in Nevada, the top speed is 70 mph. On interstates it’s 75. On Monday, Senate Bill 191 was introduced which would allow the state Department of Transportation to increase the maximum speed limit in Nevada to 85 mph where the agency determines that speed is safe. The issue has widespread support including 16 of the 21 senators.

GUN NUT REPORT, YET WE NEED MORE GUN CONTROL–“The drop in deaths from firearms and in slayings overall — over the past two decades, homicide declined by 80 percent in the District and overall crime fell by 75 percent in New York City — has come even as the economy has tanked, the number of guns owned by Americans has soared and the number of young people in the prime crime demographic has peaked.”

LATEST DON NOWELL MINATURE CREATION–A few yrs ago Gary Meadors the Goodguys guy called and ordered a sprint car model.

He says just be sure it is yellow & purple since you are the artist ‘ knock your self out ‘

Well, I found the Sunrise yellow pearl but the H.O.C. purple was too dark, just happened to see their candy Violet and what a great pair of colors trimmed in gold leaf with the red striping.

I will use these same colors and leaf on the new salt runner bike with a chrome frame too.

A bit too much for a streeter but perfect for a racer

Will keep you posted, later Don

ANOTHER WEEKEND APPROACHES—And we are scrambling.

If you’re heading to Daytona, don’t miss stopping by 2Wheelers on Main. It’s the coolest shop in town, even during Bike Week.

I need a handful of parts for my Mudflap girl FXR, including a Biker’s Choice speedo sensor, the Wire Plus speedo face, fasteners and clamps from AFT Chrome bolts, and what else? Oh, my gas tank from painter Chris Morrison. I’m wiring in this Digital Dawg keyless ignition.

I will get to this bike feature next week.

I may be selling my 1946 Indian Chief. Quick, make me an offer.

Ride Forever
