Hey,
I wish I knew which direction to head in, today. I’m lost with thoughts of the economy, bike projects, protests in the streets, runs, books, Sturgis for next year, you name it. So fuck it, we built a planter in the middle of the night, with a useless twin-cam lower end and a beach ball bike rear fender.
What the hell. I have one burning thought to share; I constantly think about Freedom and how to inject it back into the mix. It’s as if they want to regulate everything. It’s a them against us government. What if agencies could no longer regulate, but they had to help and give guidance, a whole new doctrine? No more control freaks. Let’s hit the news.

EVO ENGINE REBUILD ARTICLE ON BIKERNET– Articles like this are great and can save hard working people some money. The only thing to watch out for would be the S&S oil pump kit should only be used with an S&S oil pump. Our gaskets are much thinner than stock and in some instances this could cause the oil pump gears to bind.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION 2012 LEGISLATIVE —At the 2011 Motorcycle Riders Foundation’s (MRF) Meeting of the Minds Conference held in September in Detroit, Michigan, a Legislative Strategy Session was hosted by the MRF’s Legislative Committee. As has been done for the past several years, the MRF requested that it be attended by Sustaining State Motorcyclists’ Rights Organizations (SSMRO) Legislative and/or Executive Officers. The goal was to set the MRF’s Federal Legislative Agenda for the 2011 Meeting of the Minds to 2012 Meeting of the Minds annual cycle.
The MRF’s SSMRO partners responded once again with a majority attendance, and the Legislative Committee was extremely pleased at the aligned and clear direction from our SSMRO partners. This level of alignment will allow for a solid and focused Strategic Action Plan to be developed, disseminated, and effectively employed. The session this year was moderated by MRF Vice President Jay Jackson, supported by MRF Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs Jeff Hennie and MRF President Kirk “Hardtail” Willard.
The MRF continued the practice instituted last year, recording one vote per organization. Shown below in the order raised and discussed with our SSMROs is the MRF’s Legislative Strategy Agenda for 2011-2012.
Transportation Equity Act (TEA) Reauthorization (the Highway Bill) – closely monitor for any action that would positively or negatively impact motorcycles, motorcycling, and motorcyclists.
Pursue continuation of the Motorcycle Advisory Council designed to advise the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on motorcycling issues.
Oppose any federal blackmails or sanctions contained in the Highway Bill related to motorcycles.
The MRF will not promote adoption of the SAE sound test as a national enforcement standard – considered a state issue.
Pursue reintroduction of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) HR1253, which would require health insurance companies to disclose the list of “source of injury” exclusions in the policies they issue.
Continue successful work to cut off all funding for NHTSA motorcycle-specific checkpoint grants.
Continue monitoring the crash causation and the naturalistic studies.
Oppose any federal standard proposing stamping and certifying motorcycle exhaust systems – considered a state issue.
Continue to monitor the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sound emissions study; oppose federal agencies encouraging states to take action – considered a state issue.
Oppose ALL forms of distracted driving; oppose any related funding blackmails or withholding of funds related to motorcycles.
Watch closely for motorcycle-specific discrimination.
Continue promotion of Right to Repair Act.
Continue participation at the federal level where definitions of a motorcycle are under review.
Oppose any motorcycle-, motorcycling-, or motorcyclist-based discrimination proposed by the U.S. Congress or any Federal agency in Washington D.C.
Continue active participation in motorcycle-related activity in the European Union and United Nations.
Oppose any mandatory helmet or apparel laws.
MRF will not support the use of E15 fuel until further testing is done; continue to seek recommendations from motorcycle original equipment manufacturers (OEM).
Pursue safer roadway design strategies and inclusion of motorcycles in ongoing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) work; encourage improved crash barriers and safer cable barrier engineering.
Continue to promote the theme of crash avoidance versus safer crashing, using the principles of HR1498 which urges NHTSA to focus on crash prevention and rider education.

QUIET, A BIKERNET FAMILY COUNSELING SESSION IN PROGRESS–A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen.
‘Careful,’ he said, ‘CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the! Salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!’
The wife stared at him. ‘What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?’
The husband calmly replied, ‘I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.’

LEARNING HOW TO SET UP PROGRESSIVE SHOCK ON OUR MUDFLAP GIRL FXRS–FXR uses a unique spring rate. Angle of the shock and relation to axle require a crapload of rate to work right.
Take the shocks off and jack the pike up until you find the ride height you like and measure the center of both shock mounting points.
You’ll need a shock that is 1/2″ to 1″ longer than that # (shock will sag back to the height you spec’d).
Challenge here, is to do this right we need to cycle the suspension with the springs off of the shocks (just dampers bolted to bike) and make sure they hit the bump stops before the tire hits the fender. Custom set ups require some work.

2012 DAYTONA BIKE WEEK’S NEW LOGO– Biketoberfest just ended and Bike Week 2012 is still five months away, but it’s never too soon to start planning for the 71st annual event.
To that end, the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Bike Week Festival Task Force unveiled Thursday the official logo for Bike Week 2012, designed by Chris Highhline of Cubco Screen Printing & Embroidery in Holly Hill.
Bike Week 2012 is March 9-18.
The official logo, to be used by licensees, features a slick white motorcycle with the 2’s in “2012” serving as the wheel fenders and a “Bike Week” banner superimposed over a traditional shield-type patch with a flat blue-gray background, bright royal blue trim and light gray lettering.
“I love this year’s logo,” said Kevin Killian, chamber vice president for special events. “Last year’s was retro, and this is kinda modern.”
The chamber received between 50 and 60 designs from six to eight local artists and chamber-member businesses, Killian said. The artists know the selected design will be donated to the chamber, which makes “some money” from logo use, Killian said.
There are some logo requirements because it will be used on a variety of applications — T-shirts, banners, posters, websites, advertisements, correspondence and embroidery. “Bike Week,” “World’s Largest Motorcycle Event,” “Daytona Beach” and the event year are required.
“It’s great to have a logo that we think will appeal to the hundreds of thousands of bikers who attend each year with a modern design that reflects that Bike Week in Daytona Beach is ready for the future,” said Sean Belgrade, chair of the Chamber’s Bike Week licensing committee. “I think this year’s logo will be one of our best and most versatile designs.”
Highhline, 32, is a lifelong resident of Daytona Beach and a graduate of Mainland High School’s Academy of Communications and Multimedia Technologies. He’s been working for Cubco for about six years.
Cubco was founded in 1987 and is located at 605 Commercial Drive, Holly Hill. Besides screen printing and embroidery, the business has a full line of specialty products including pens, mugs, can coolers, magnets, decals and lanyards.
Bike Week 2012 is a week later than usual because NASCAR’s Daytona 500 race was pushed off a week and is Feb. 26, 2012. Bike Week will continue to be an early- to mid-March event, Killian said.

BIKERNET WORKING WITH THAILAND– Allow me to tell you a bit about Siam Wheels. I set up the company more than three years ago to cater to (primarily) expats who come to Thailand frequently or who are based here on a contract basis.
Thailand is such a wonderful country for riding motorcycles, but there are large numbers of people who come and go every year or who come only occasionally. Many of our members are in finance in Singapore/ Hong Kong or in the Oil industry in the middle east. Members commit to a 12-month membership and get points with every payment that they can use on any of our bikes.
We provide all the bikes for Smiling Albino’s trips. You can see our fleet here: http://www.siamwheels.com/whyjoin/content/motorcycle-information

AUSTRALIAN POLICE Inquiry backs secret police ‘intelligence’– An inquiry has backed the use of secret intelligence by police in the South Australian Government’s law-and-order Bill.
The Legislative Review Committee found that although the use of criminal intelligence prejudiced the person it was used against, it was warranted when considering the risks posed by motorcycle club members and others involved in organized crime.
The committee examined the use of criminal intelligence after the Opposition moved to amend a Government Bill to “harmonise” the criminal intelligence provisions in the legislation police use to vet the types of people who can be employed in certain industries or hold various licences, including for firearms.
The Bill aimed to make the criminal intelligence provisions in each Bill compatible with High Court rulings approving its use – in order to prevent future legal challenges that may arise.
However, the Opposition amendments severely curtailed the use of criminal intelligence.
The committee, which heard evidence from senior police, the Law Society and senior lawyers from the Serious and Organised Crime Section of the Crown Solicitor’s Office, was comprised of five Labor, two Liberal and one Independent member.
Attorney-General John Rau yesterday said he would re-submit the harmonisation Bill to Parliament following the committee’s report because “there is no question it is in the public interest”.

LOS ANGELES—Watching organized crime shows apparently has a way of bringing out people’s fashion sense.
News Corp.’s pay TV channel FX is teaming up with sister movie studio 20th Century Fox on an iPad app that will follow along during airings of the hit show “Sons of Anarchy” and offer up ways to buy products that appear on screen.
Some of the items include “Gimme Props Reaper Gold Rings,” which are exact replicas of ones used in the biker gang show, Lil’ Joe’s leathers, and boot-cut jeans from Seven For All Mankind.
The app, called “SOA Gear,” is set to launch on Nov. 1, the same day that the ninth episode of the current fourth season will air on TV. The app will also work with Blu-ray discs of season three.
The app follows along by picking up on audio clues in the show, or through a timer that the user can start when the show begins. Alternatively, users can flip through manually.
“Sons of Anarchy” is having its best season yet, drawing on average 5.8 million viewers per new episode, up about 30 percent from the previous season.
FX Networks’ President John Landgraf said in a statement that the app will provide loyal fans new ways to interact and expand their association with the show.
Several years ago, Matt Hotch approached Ron Loynds to build the first 26-inch wheel. Matt also needed tires for his Discovery Channel Biker Build-Off Vincent Custom called the “Vinnie.” He came in contact with Vee Rubber, a Thailand-based tire manufacturer (with 10,000 employees). Vee Rubber is known for being able to develop new tires quickly. They own their mold-making facility. Consequently, the first 26-inch tire was manufactured for the first 26-inch wheel, and Vinnie was a major television hit. The wheel was built by Ron Loynds and his extensive machine shop team before they kicked off Metalsport Inc.
Vee Rubber, one of the largest companies in Thailand, manufactured OEM tires for decades in the car and motorcycle industry. After the show aired on the Discovery Channel, Ron pursued a relationship with Vee Rubber. He was impressed with their manufacturing flexibility and started to talk with them about producing monster and whitewall tires. A new configuration Vee Rubber tire can run from drawing to the streets in 60-90 days, but whitewalls are another animal. Vee Rubber devoted over a million dollars to enhance their whitewall technology behind a year of manufacturing research. They are currently the only company to manufacture a quality whitewall tire in a 23-inch size, and for a range of popular tires from 120 to 200 mm. Now that the Vee Rubber team is satisfied with their whitewall manufacturing process, more whitewall tire sizes are forthcoming. Below is a list of in-stock on the West Coast, Available through Metalsport Inc.
Ron persistently worked with the Vee Rubber staff, as he built more and more radical custom motorcycle wheel styles and sizes, with designers such as Chip Foose. The relationship has grown between MetalSport, Inc. and Vee Rubber. Metalsport, Inc. recently became the West Coast (anything west of the Mississippi) importer/distributor for the entire line of Vee Rubber motorcycle tires (including Canada). The deal was signed recently and a container of tires delivered. Below is a list of monster tires in stock, in addition to OEM model tires.
Check the list of tires sizes, and don’t hesitate to challenge this team for more configurations of tires, wheels, or custom product manufacturing. They have the resources to build almost anything.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT MEMO–The English language has some wonderful collective nouns for the various groups of animals.
We are all familiar with a Herd of cows, a Flock of chickens, a School of fish and a Gaggle of geese.
However, less widely known is a Pride of lions, a Murder of crows (as well as their cousins the rooks and ravens), an Exaltation of doves and, presumably because they look so wise, a Parliament of owls.
Now consider a group of Baboons. They are the loudest, most dangerous, most obnoxious, most viciously aggressive and least intelligent of all primates. And what is the proper collective noun for a group of baboons?
Believe it or not … a Congress!
You just can’t make this stuff up.

UNCLE MONKEY TAKES ON THE BIG ISSUES– This, that and another. It seems no matter which way you turn these days there is some kind of squabble. From the Hoka Hey to motorcycle rallies, to Pro/Con Victory/Indian debates to what is or isn’t considered to be a biker. Lost amongst this is the comradely that use to bind us together. Brothers on the lonesome road, sharing the wind. Now it seems that it is every man for himself. Owning a brand new Harley is the standard and if you don’t, well…
There was a time not too long ago when we all seemed to get along. It was us against the world but now we are fighting each others more then fighting for our eroding freedoms. What happened? It’s hard to say. Loyalty had always been strong. Perhaps it was that we grew into bikers. We started racing our mini bikes around the yard before we saved up enough to buy a “real” motorcycle.
Cheap, worn out motorcycles held their own as we saved for the day when we could finally buy a Harley. Now it seems anyone with a bank account full of money simply walks into a dealership and plunks down the money. Instant biker. No dues paid, no miles rode as we worked our way up. For others riding was brought together from shared experiences and being disassociated from society as a whole.
That was the case with many of the young servicemen who went away to fight for freedom only to come home to a country that had changed. They were bonded together, brothers in the trenches and the jungles, brothers on the road.
Motorcycles are a multi-billion dollar industry and the more cash riders flash around the more outsiders want a piece of that action. Event originators are being dismissed by the companies they started, greedy conmen changing the rules to suit their own needs. Municipalities taxing rallies into oblivion. Corporations arguing about who owns “Sturgis.”
Once we were happy to break even, maybe even make a coupe of bucks. Now it is billion dollar profit margins just to exist. Society as a whole is tumbling into chaos. Commercialism, consumption, self-absorption, greed and contempt. Freedom of choice, freedom of speech, freedoms of rights swept away as we anxiously await the newest shiny trinket. It will collapse, it has already begun. The question is whether you will be trampled under it or be speeding across the desert in search of sanctuary.

THE BIKERNET PHARMACY LESSON– All drugs have two names, a trade name and generic name.
Example, the trade name is Tylenol and it’s generic name is Acetaminophen. Aleve is also called Naproxen.
Amoxil is also called Amoxicillin and Advil is also called Ibuprofen.
The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra.
After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin.
Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.
Pfizer Corp. announced today that Viagra will soon be available in liquid form, and will be marketed by Pepsi Cola as a power beverage suitable for use as a mixer.
It will now be possible for a man to literally pour himself a stiff one.
Obviously we can no longer call this a soft drink, and it gives new meaning to the names of ‘cocktails’, ‘highballs’ and just a good old-fashioned ‘stiff drink’.
Pepsi will market the new concoction by the name of: MOUNT & DO.

LENO AVOIDS INJURY AS ACCIDENTS MAR THE LOVE RIDE– Riders of Love Ride 28 sit on their motorcycles while waiting for the stage blocking their way to be removed before they can make the ride to Castaic. Jay Leno led Love Ride 28 out of Glendale and was in a group, which was later involved in an accident, causing one of his associates to go down.
It was supposed to be a day of celebration. Thousands of motorcyclists gathered on a sunny morning at Glendale Harley-Davidson to take part in the 28th annual Love Ride and raise money for Autism Speaks. Everyone participating in the motorcycle charity ride was excited at the events return to Lake Castaic after a five-year hiatus at the venue. Jay Leno was on hand to lead the procession out of town on a group ride up I-5 to the lake to take in a concert by country stars Montgomery Gentry.
Then an unfortunate series of events took place that would cost the lives of two motorcyclists at the dangerous intersection of northbound I-5 and the 170 freeway. It started when a member of the lead group of motorcyclists from the Love Ride, a posse that included Leno and LA City Councilman Mitch Englander, got clipped from the side and went down.
At the Love Ride it was announced the gentleman’s name was Tom Kershaw, an associate of Leno, who was rushed to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills with non-life threatening injuries. Leno accompanied the man to the hospital and had to miss out on his duties as Grand Marshal at that afternoon’s Love Ride. The large pack of motorcycles in the first group had all pulled over to the side of the road at the scene, and combined with the contingency of emergency vehicles, traffic quickly got backed up on the I-5. Meanwhile, the majority of riders still trying to get out to Lake Castaic formed a single file line between the HOV and fast lanes and slowly wove through traffic.
It was during this traffic jam that another motorcycle-riding couple coming up on the scene of the first collided with a big rig. An eyewitness to the aftermath we talked to feared the worst, a fact confirmed by California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Jacobs who pronounced the couple dead at the scene. The couple was estimated to be in their 40s.
This second accident closed down traffic on I-5 to one lane for hours and would delay or prevent many from making it out to Lake Castaic for the event. The main thrust of riders gathered at Glendale H-D were delayed from leaving with the lead group at least half an hour because Love Ride crews had to take down the stage they had erected in the middle of San Fernando Road before they could leave. Over a 1000 motorcycles were lined up blocks deep anxiously waiting to take off, unaware of the tragic events which were unfolding in front of them. Most didn’t learn about what had happened until arriving at Castaic.
Motorcycle USA got out right after the first wave of riders and before the main group. We rode up on the first accident where we saw who we believe was Kershaw getting wheeled into the ambulance. The fatal incident occurred sometime shortly after we were passing the first one, but we heard about it from fellow riders when we arrived at the Love Ride. Our condolences go out to the families of the riders who lost their lives. Authorities said the victims were riding ahead of the Love Ride motorcyclists and were not part of the charity event.

POST-BIKERTOBERFEST REPORT FROM 2WHEELERS–No one knows rally history and the event movement more than Donna and Arlin Fatland. Arlin owns 2Wheelers in Denver, but he also owns a building on Main in Sturgis and another 2Wheelers on Main in Daytona. Donna and Arlin pack their shit and attended all three national events annually at both locations. They’ve been doing this routine for at least 30 years–holy shit.
I asked Donna how she felt about this Biketoberfest:
“It went ok with the weather and economy. We don’t look back or compare, just look forward and do our best. We had lunch with Billy Lane’s Dad and Mom in Daytona. There is a official facebook page for him : search…billy lane’s choppers inc (official).”
“It will come up with his logo and they are answering questions. Great to know. “
We are working with Billy on an interview. We are going to bring him back into the industry as his sentence winds down. He’s anxious to be involved. In correspondence he told me his sister is trying to keep his product line alive.

NOPD motorcycle cops under investigation over paid details–NEW ORLEANS — Eyewitness News has uncovered 20 New Orleans Police Department officers under investigation for allegedly violating the department’s detail policy.
Some have been re-assigned as the NOPD’s Public Integrity Bureau conducts this latest inquiry into the department’s controversial paid detail system.
The investigation involves a majority of the members of the NOPD’s motorcycle officers. All of it began after a controversial detail that some traffic officers worked escorting a football team to the Superdome.
Twenty officers are now being investigated for violating the department’s policy on private, paid details.
Attorneys confirmed at least three motorcycle cops have been transferred out of the traffic division after allegedly taking cash, or in one case, a check written out to “cash,” for working a detail.
“Motorcycles can be very lucrative. I mean, escorts are being done all the time, for weddings, for funerals, for large transports, and things like that. If you’re moved out of that position, you have virtually cut your throat by violating those regulations,” said President of the Fraternal Order of Police Henry Dean.
His organization is providing legal counsel for some of the officers under investigation.
In September, motorcycle detail administrator James Neyrey was assigned to desk duty after allegedly soliciting payment in the form of checks made out to cash, which were then given to individual officers, from the Tennesse Titans football team to arrange their escort to the Superdome.
“To my knowledge, it’s like 19 or 20 officers who were discovered that are taking cash for details after being instructed not to do that. In fact, it was made quite clear,” Dean said.

THE BIKERNET ART OF THE WEEK–This is a newly revised version of famed Hot Rod Artist Larry Grossman famous Bob’s Big Boy picture! This exciting 18 x 24″ Lithograph (a litho is a premium quality poster) captures a classic moment from the sixties era of cruising at the legendary Bob’s in Burbank California, which is the exact spot where the Hot Rod and Custom Car Cruise Scene originally began in the ’50s and ’60s!
This beautiful picture is loaded with amazing details, first of which is the beautiful Bob’s building itself, built in 1949 and now a historic landmark. Then there’s the “Satin’s Slaves” biker cruising past on his hog chopper as a ’57 Chevy Nomad turns the corner on the far left. In the parking lot is a cool assortment of cars including a ’33 Ford chopped coupe, a ’59 Corvette, a chopped ’50 Merc, a ’46 Ford Woodie, a ’30 Model ‘A’ sedan, and a ’54 Ford lead-sled Kustom. Pulling out of the driveway is a flamed ’32 chopped coupe rod, as a bad-ass looking ’55 Chevy Gasser waits to pull in.

HOW TO FIX THE DEFICIT–Warren Buffett, “I could end the deficit in 5 minutes,” he told CNBC. “You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.
The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971…before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the and…all because of public pressure.
*Congressional Reform Act of 2011*
1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.
2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their terms), then go home and back to work.

BARN FIND AUCTION OF THE YEAR–This November 3-5, 2011, Auctions America by RM in partnership with RM Auctions will be lifting the gavel on one of the Chicago area’s best known treasures — The Lee Hartung Collection. Billed as the “Ultimate Barn Find Auction”, the three-day sale will include over 2500 lots, and will put up for sale literally hundreds of America’s rarest and most unique two- and four-wheeled vehicles.
Lee Hartung was a collector’s collector. Based in Glenview, IL, Hartungs collection rested on 4 acres in the middle of the North Chicago suburb, and was amassed over the 60 years since he purchased the property in the 1940s. For those fortunate enough to get a glimpse of Lee’s collection over the past decades — they were among a select few to step into a time-warp that told a unique story of 20th century Chicago —- from Lee’s point of view.
Dale was one of those fortunate individuals, having stumbled across the collection in the mid-1980s during a trip through the Chicago area to visit a friend. Immediately, Dale recognized the gravity of the collection, as well as the unique and passionate individual that had made it his life’s mission to preserve and amass the history housed within those walls.
“Lee collected everything Chicago.” says Dale. Resting just inside collections main building were over a hundred rare automobiles and motorcycles. A collection of Ford Model-A and Model-T cars and trucks sat within inches of each other, covered no only in dust, but with various other collections Lee had amassed over his decades of accumulating history, including Early televisions, toys, radios, and hot-rod automotive parts many of which had never been used. Motorcycles and bicycles lined the walls and sat on shelves twenty feet off the ground, put up by Lee as far back as the 1950s. Gas pumps, piles hit and miss engines, childrens rides, and vintage outboard motors rested in every corner, having most likely sat since Lee had discovered them who knows how long ago.
Lee had an eye for both rarity and originality. Many of the machines in the collection had never been restored or modified, including the very rare 1948 One-of-a-kind Veritas and the 1951 Sterling Edwards Roadster, as well as a host of motorcycles including original, unrestored examples of a 1912 Harley, 1910 Pope, numerous four-cylinder Hendersons and Indians, a 1910 Excelsior, 1902 Wagner, and even a 1913 Flying Merkel.

TERRY THE TRAMP BOOKS GOING FAST– You asked me to check out your new book about Vago Terry. I’m gonna pick one up, was wondering if you might write a few lines inside and sign it for me. I keep alot of my goodies and past memories to pass down to my kids. Please let me know if that’s possible.

BIKER RUNS FOR LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL– I sent you a photo of myself and son with my 75 Norton 850 Commando.
A little history of my love affair with two wheeled vehicles: Growing up we had neighbors who were total garage rats. They had go-karts, mini-bikes, Triumph choppers, hot rods, you name it. I hung out watching them tinker from the time I was four years old. My first mini-bike was a Briggs & Stratton 3 HP. I got when I was ten. My parents had zero interest in my hobby.
The good part was that it taught me to earn enough money to buy bikes on my own. I had a Kawasaki 750 triple in high school, I am lucky to still be alive! I started riding dirt bikes again at age 37 and fell in love with camping in the high desert. My five year old son, Gordon III is absolutely cycle crazy. He has been riding his Honda 50 since age 3, and has recently completed two kids races at Glen Helen Raceway. I have owned over 20 bikes.
About the Norton: It was one of those bikes I always wanted when I was younger. I purchased it ten years ago, and have done some minor restoration to it. As time and money permit, I will continue to enhance it.
It is the last model imported to the US, and has a rare left side gear shift and electric start.
If elected, I will be the voice for the motorcycle riders at City Hall.

BIKERNET PERFORMANCE EDITOR REPORTS– Come Monday evening and we’re taking Jet Blue to Vegas for two days of meetings at the SEMA show. Will have both eyes wide open looking for the latest, greatest gadget that we can’t live without.
Ya never know what ya might in find in Vegas, from hot rod parts to a sultry red head on the prowl.
BIKERNET HEADQUARTERS– Nothi’n but blue skies, lollipops and sunshine on the horizon at the Bikernet Intergalactic Headquarters, located in beautiful downtown Wilmington. One of the best kept secrets in SoCal.
This place is amazing with near perfect riding weather everyday of the year. The traffic is a challenge at times, unless you plan your escape between peak traffic.
Headed North to the Bay area and splittin’ lanes is mandatory for about the first 25 to 30 miles. Then you discover a fork in the road, two ways headed North are available, the 101 or the I-5. The 101 both directions is my preferred chunk of asphalt.
101 is very scenic with the Pacific ocean a few feet to the left when headed North. With a few friends along the way to stop and visit with when time allows. Ventura, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Pacheco Pass, then into the San Jose area. Six hours of peace with the hot rod singin’ a happy tune, thanks to Ron, Jeff, Kevin and Mike at Hardtailz in San Jose.
Looking forward to making the run again soon. Seems that my son and soon to be wife want to go sky diving and invited me to jump out of a perfectly good airplane with them, and who am I to refuse. See ya there kids and we’ll take photos.
Back in 1984 a friend talked me into makin a few jumps, what a rush.
PROGRESS in the shop.
Parts and pieces are hittin the front door at an amazing pace and some work out the first time, it’s amazing. Three bikes, two hand built FXRs nearing completion and the first Bikernet World’s fastest Panhead are mounted on the shop’s three lifts.

The last couple of days has seen three heat cycles to warm her heart, seat the valves, the rings and flush out the newness. The Mud Flap girl will get a fresh filter and new oil before hittin’ the bricks. Bandit installed a long filter that also holds the alternator plug in place, great idea.

Former Detective: NYPD Planted Drugs on People to Meet Drug Arrest Quotas–
The NYPD has been under fire in recent months for illegal searches resulting in thousands of low-level marijuana arrests, mostly of people of color. As corrupt as this practice is, testimony from Stephen Anderson, a former NYPD narcotics detective, shows it’s just the tip of the iceberg.
According to Anderson, who testified at trial Wednesday, New York City police regularly planted drugs on innocent people to meet quotas. Anderson should know. He was arrested in 2008 for planting cocaine on four men in a bar in Queens. His statements are the first glimpse into a culture of set-ups at the Brooklyn South and Queens Narc squads where
eight corrupt cops were arrested.
Anderson says his own stunt was a tactic to help officer Henry Tavarez meet his buy-and-bust quota. But the incident was not limited to a handful of men. According to Anderson, “It was something I was seeing a lot of, whether it was from supervisors or undercovers and even investigators.”
Anderson’s case suggests the set-ups are a response to the pressure bosses force on police to make drug arrests.
“Tavarez was … was worried about getting sent back [to patrol] and, you know, the supervisors getting on his case,” Anderson said at the corruption trial of Brooklyn South narcotics Detective Jason Arbeeny.
Having just made two legitimate arrests himself, “I had decided to give him [Tavarez] the drugs to help him out so that he could say he had a buy,” Anderson testified.
“As a detective, you still have a number to reach while you are in the narcotics division,” Anderson added.
Clearly, the NYPD was requiring officers to fill quotas. The problem, it seems, was not lazy officers, but a lack of the guilty. The undue attention officers place on drug arrests is cause for alarm. This is not the first allegation of widespread corruption at the NYPD. Disturbing
data uncovered by the Drug Policy Alliance and Queens College sociology professor Dr. Harry Levine shows many incidences of abuse of police authority. In fact, the evidence was so strong and stunk of such wrongdoing that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly actually issued an internal memo last month, ordering officers to stop charging people based on improper searches.
Possession of small amounts of marijuana is decriminalized in New York. But to slap youths with a criminal charge that can take away their opportunity to obtain student loans and public housing, officers conduct “stop-and-frisks” by which they demand people to empty their pockets. They are then arrested for marijuana “in public view” which, like public
smoking of the plant, is not decriminalized. Of course, the marijuana was not in public view until the cops themselves put it there.
Since 2002, there were 35,000 low-level marijuana arrests in New York City, adding up to 15% of all arrests in the city. Shockingly, 86% of those arrested are people of color. And they are mostly youths from poor neighborhoods. That’s a lot of lost futures. But how many others have corrupt cops destroyed?
The stop-and-frisk marijuana arrests and evidence of drug-related setups give the NYPD two counts of falsification. But what about the rest of the country? How many behind bars are victims of the drug war?
The rhetoric surrounding the war on drugs promises that drug arrests keep the population safer. But planting substances on innocent victims and subjecting them to years locked inside of a cage where violence, illness, and despair are rampant does not increase safety, nor does it maintain sound community relations. What’s more, when drug arrests may nay not even be legitimate, the “fairness” ideal used as an excuse for denying drug arrestees access to public benefits becomes completely void.
If this kind of evidence does not scream for drug policy reform, then what does?

MICHIGAN HELMET LAW FREEDOM MOVEMENT– LANSING — Proposals that would allow some motorcyclists to ride without helmets in Michigan continue to advance in the state Legislature.
The House Transportation Committee on Wednesday approved bills that would allow riders 21 or older to go without helmets if they meet certain training or experience conditions.
The measures advance to the House floor. A similar bill has passed the Senate.
Gov. Rick Snyder did not appear interested in considering the motorcycle helmet law on its own when it passed the Senate this summer. But he has indicated he might consider the helmet law as part of a broader legislative package related to auto insurance.
The Legislature has passed bills to get rid of the state’s mandatory motorcycle helmet law before but the measures were vetoed twice by then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

J’WITZ DOCUMENTARY SOON TO BE RELEASED–
“Shoot the Salt” is a short documentary that follows Jody Perewitz and Team J’Witz as she attempts to set a land speed record and become the first woman to race an American made motorcycle over 200 mph. Her performance will take place in the stunning Salt Flats of Utah during Bonneville’s Bub Motorcycle Trials, on the same grounds where Burt Munro, aka, ‘the world’s fastest Indian’, made history.
Jody’s quest is similar to that of many of daredevils who are driven to test their mettle, and ‘shoot the salt’ for a chance at history. She is fearless, trusts her bike, and has been training hard for the opportunity. But her feat’s distinction lies not only in her gender and machine type, which would be a recorded first, but also in the personal circumstances surrounding the event. Whether she is aware of it or not, Jody is stepping out from the shadow cast by her father, Dave Perewitz, a world-renowned custom bike builder. Not only did her famous Dad build the family name to be synonymous with custom bike building, he also built the machine that will rocket his daughter 200 miles per hour over the earth. A family’s dynamic, an American engine’s strength, and a young women’s belief in herself will all be tested in this uplifting tale about the pursuit of infamy.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON DELIVERS TIMELY DONATION TO NEWTHREADS– Third delivery in 2011 provides more than 30,000 items to support the community
MILWAUKEE (Oct. 25, 2011) – Harley-Davidson Motor Company today delivered two truckloads of new clothing to NewThreads of Hope, a local non-profit organization that will provide the donated jeans, jackets, T-shirts, gloves and hats to agencies that give the clothing free of charge to people and families in need. This third donation for the year is very timely as the colder winter months approach.
“While Harley-Davidson is proud to continue to support NewThreads of Hope, our donation is really about their mission of providing new clothing for new opportunities,” said Patrick Smith, Vice President and General Manager of General Merchandise for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “Supporting the communities where we live and work is very important to all of us at Harley-Davidson, and through our relationships with organizations like NewThreads of Hope, we are helping our neighbors here in Milwaukee.”
During 2011, Harley-Davidson donated more than 70,000 items of new clothing and merchandise to NewThreads. The organization works with other non-profit agencies that receive the merchandise at no charge, and together ensure the items being received are helping men, women and children who have an immediate need.
“NewThreads of Hope collects, sorts and distributes only new, unused clothing,” explained Dennis Brand, President of NewThreads of Hope. “When someone receives the clothing donated by Harley-Davidson, it tells them the company cares enough to give them something that is new and only theirs. This is a powerful message, and we thank Harley-Davidson for all its generosity this year.”
NewThreads of Hope uses volunteers to process, sort and divide the clothing among the local social service agencies who distribute the items. Several organizations are slated to receive items from the Harley-Davidson donation, including local agencies here in Milwaukee and others throughout the United States. SO THERE–I’m trying to keep the news to 10,000 words. Another challenge. We have two ATK entry level motorcycles to test out, quick. Frank White is trying to make them available to H-D dealerships, and I think it would be a good test, before H-D attempts to invest in their own models. Let’s see what they decide.
We are planning our whirlwind run to Vegas for the SEMA show, then back here quick, so we can run out to visit Saddlemen for FXR seats and to learn about their new gel technology.
I feel a lot of pressure, but I brought it on myself. I usually build one bike a year, now we are facing three, then repairs to existing bikes, and Bonneville bikes are in the wings. But what the hell, it’s all good, if I can stay ahead of the curve. My goal is to have all the Mudflap girl FXRs running before the end of the year, registered and cutting dusty trails around the southland. We should fix the Salt shaker tomorrow and that would clear three lifts. Then we need to finish the XS, if Danny can get his shit together. He’s made strides, is clean, has a couple of jobs, and moved his family into new digs. He just needs to pay a couple of bills, then we can install the Yamaha engine, make pipes and an electrical box, and wire that puppy.
Let’s see what the weekend brings.
Ride Forever,
