Life is bananas. This news will rock your world. I’m not messing around. Twice this week I watched CSPAN and ran into crazy government issues. First I watched an hour of testimony from government agencies discussing the millions spent to prevent biological terrorism. No one has ever died from a biological terrorism act, but we spend more money every year to prevent it.

The second hearing involved the failed Army Corps of Engineers and how they mis-judged the river flooding last year. During this hearing state Senators were begging other senators for help with the Army Corps of Engineers. Good god, our elected officials can’t control the agencies they create. Hang on. Let’s hit it:

The wife has been missing a week now. Police said to prepare for the worst. So, I have been to the thrift shop to get all of her clothes back.

At the Senior Citizens Center they had a contest the other day. I lost by one point: The question was: Where do women mostly have curly hair? Apparently the correct answer was Africa !!!

DEL MAR CONCOURSE DE ELEGANCE–
The Del Mar Concours d’Elegance is held at one of the world’s most beautiful locations, the Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack, on the water in Solana Beach, just north of San Diego, California.

Founded in the late 1930s by horse racing enthusiasts led by legendary crooner Bing Crosby, Del Mar has emerged as one of the great beachfront locations worldwide. The facility plays home to horse racing from July to September annually, and is also home to the San Diego County Fair, along with dozens of special events year round.

This year the Concourse played out on October 15-16, 2011. Bing Crosby himself once sang, Del Mar is “where the turf meets the surf.”

The organizers of the 2011 Del Mar Concours d’Elegance were proud to present Celebration of the Motorcycle, a one-of-a-kind, cycle-only event featuring only the finest examples of cycle manufacturing, from the earliest days to the classics we all grew up with.

The event featured a hand-selection collection of antique and classic bikes from around the world, each with its own pedigree and story to tell. All will compete for our coveted Best of Show prize, with a wide variety of judging categories available.

John Smith started the day early, having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6 am.

While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG), and put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA).

After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA), he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO), to see how much he could spend today.

After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA), he got in his car (MADE IN JAPAN), filled it with GAS (from SAUDIA ARABIA) to continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.

At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his Computer (made in MALAYSIA), John decided to relax for a while.

He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL),  poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA),

and then wondered why he can’t find a good paying job in AMERICA.

THE BOSS OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPEAKS OUT–
Wandell: Harley-Davidson needs to be more agile, seek new customers Harley-Davidson is plotting a marketing course designed to walk a tightrope: attracting new customers without alienating die-hard fans, CEO Keith Wandell says.

“We can’t survive on our core customers alone,” Wandell told a symposium audience at the Center for Operational Excellence at Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business Friday. “2008 changed the landscape of the economy in this country forever, and anybody who believes for one minute that it’s ever going to be the same as it was before 2008, it’s not going to happen.”

Bob Althoff, owner of Dealernews Top 100 dealer AD Farrow Co. – the oldest continually operating Harley-Davidson dealership in the U.S., echoed Wandell’s message, according to the Columbus Business Journal, noting the company needs to give riders more entry-level opportunities.

“We train (first-timers) how to ride, but most will buy their first motorcycle from our competitors – and that breaks our heart,” Althoff said.

Wandell hinted that the company will bring new products to market more quickly and try to be a more agile player to keep up with market trends.

“If we bring out products that make them say, ‘Wow,’ then they’ll know we’re still investing in them,” he said.

The Motor Co. got complacent during the boom years when customers were placed on waiting lists for new motorcycles, he said, and that alienated some potential customers.

“You told people to go away,” he said. “You said, ‘We don’t want you.’ ”

Wandell told the group that North America, home to half of Harley-Davidson’s more than 1,400 dealer locations, has been overdeveloped. Between 60 and 70 stores have closed in recent years, and another 30 are expected to be trimmed from the field soon.

I figured you would be the all knowing one to answer this question.  Heard the Florida and California have passed laws that license plates have to be mounted horizontal??

Yes, I know Florida passed this law last year and they fuck with guys who come into their state sporting vertical plates. I understand Florida, since the cops aren’t very bright and maybe they can’t read seven digits turned vertically.

At Barber the week before, 72 bikes in my race, I started DEAD LAST, and wound up 34th fastest…..21 bikes in my class, and I was 9th.

The guy I went down to Daytona with, Roy Chapman, won the Sportsman 750 race on his Bad-Ass XS650 on Sunday…..he got second on Friday.

We went on a vintage ride with the local BMW club….Roy on his 1946 Indian, and me..??….I put 150 miles on an XR1000, one of my dream rides! Thanks Joe Gimpel for the loaner Ride and Hospitality!

BIKERNET FIRE DEPARTMENT CALLED TO THE SCENE–
Burbank Firefighters had their hands full when they arrived on scene at 3316 W. Verdugo Avenue , Thursday afternoon as they had a garage well involved with fire. A 91 year-old occupant was knocked to the ground after attempting to start the car and it backfired and caught fire. Firefighters made a quick knock down but were unable to save the garage or any of it’s contents which included a 1940 Ford Coupe and a mobile trailer sitting near the garage. Firefighter/Paramedics treated the resident, Tom Medley, the owner of both the home and of the car, who was knocked to the ground after the fire started.

Medley declined any further medical treatment. Burbank Fire sent three engines, two truck companies, a paramedic unit and Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief Tom Lenahan. The damage was listed at $30,000 to the garage and $60,000 to it’s contents with no injuries to firefighters and the cause is being listed as an accidental backfire from the cars engine.
Tom is the guy who drew Stroker in Rod & Custom.
He helped start the NSRA.

THE WINE TASTER–
At a wine merchant’s warehouse the regular taster died, and the director started looking for a new one to hire. A retired Marine A-4 pilot drunk and with a ragged dirty look came to apply for the position. The director wondered how to send him away. They gave him a glass to drink.

The old pilot tried it and said, “It’s a Muscat three years old, grown on a north slope, matured in steel containers. Low grade but acceptable.”

“That’s correct,” said the boss. “Another glass, please.”

“It’s a cabernet, eight years old, south-western slope, oak barrels, matured at eight degrees. Requires three more years for finest results.”

“Absolutely correct. A third glass.”

”It’s a pinot blanc champagne, high grade and exclusive,” calmly said the drunk.

The director was astonished and winked at his secretary to suggest something. She left the room and came back in with a glass of urine.

The alcoholic tried it. “It’s a blonde, 26 years old, three months pregnant, and if I don’t get the job, I’ll name the father.”

BIKERNET CORRESPONDENT CHOOSES H-D OVER VICTORY–
We rode a Cross Country, and I didn’t like it at all. The power was nice, but I just couldn’t get over the “look”.

Maybe I’m a pansy, but my masochistic V-Rod days are over. Picked up a New 2012 Ultra Classic Limited on Friday. Have over 500 miles on her already and have to say it is a very impressive motorcycle.

Not sure why I waited so long. I got the two tone with the Big Blue Pearl and Black. Here’s a quick shot, maybe get a ride review to you soon if you are interested.

WILLIE’S TROPICAL TATTOO AND OLD SCHOOL CHOPPER SHOW JUDGED BY BIKERNET CORRESPONDENT–
I had the privilege to be one of the judges at Willie’s Tropical Tattoo Old School Chopper Show during Biketoberfest and I have to admit I had a hard time making a decision on the one motorcycle I liked. Damn I liked a lot of them and they covered chops, bobbers, customs, restored both Harley and others, rat bikes etc.


I also get to see a lot of friends there, have a couple of cold adult beverages and really enjoy myself.



Roadside Marty did a good job as emcee again this year. If you were there I know you had a good time, if not here are a few shots to show you what you missed and also a reminder the next one will be Bike Week 2012

ABATE OF PENNSYLVANIA LEGISLATIVE ISSUES–
Below is the summary of what went on in Harrisburg today, with regard to ABATE of PA issues:

Tuesday, October 18, 2011 10:00 AM – Senate Transportation Committee

House Bill 563 a bill that provides liability protection to landowners who permit the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program to use their property for training passed the Senate Transportation Committee unanimously. No amendments were attached. The bill will now be considered by the full Senate. There appears to be strong support for this bill and we want to see passage in the near future. More on this one later.

Tuesday, October 18, 2011 11:00 AM – House of Representatives

House Bill 1399 a bill to redefine the definition of a motorcycle passed the full House and has been sent to the Senate for considerations. There were four amendments offered to the bill. Amendment AO5518 offered by Representative Dan Frankel would have restored the mandatory helmet law for all riders. Amendment A05517 offered by Representative Dan Frankel would have required special motorcycle plates for certain owners. Any person under 20 years of age would have been required to have a registration plate that was visibly unique in both color and design from the regular motorcycle plate. Amendment A05519 offered by Representative Dan Frankel would have required a motorcycle operator or passenger to show proof of health insurance and long term care insurance. AO5544 offered by Representative Josh Shapiro prohibited the use of interactive wireless communication devices.

Both Representative Frankel and Shapiro withdrew their amendments.

However, Frankel made a statement that he plans to introduce a resolution to require a new study to determine the effects of the helmet modification since its enactment in 2003.

Obviously, Frankel could tell which way the wind was blowing and saw little support for his amendments. Thanks to the ABATE members who called and emailed their Representatives and asked them to support HB 1399 but to reject any amendments.

While talking with Heather Rodgers, secretary for Representative Todd Rock, she informed us that she had received 8 calls this morning about not supporting the Frankel amendments. A 9th call was received during the conversation. This was just one example but it was consistent with what was happening all over the state capitol. The system worked. Thanks to everyone who took the time to make the calls.

I hope if nothing else that everyone is now aware that the helmet issue is far from over in Pennsylvania. Frankel thought that he had caught us napping. He was wrong this time. But don’t think he will be discouraged and just fade away. It’s time to get back to basics. Plan now on having your chapter represented at the 2012 Leadership and Legislative Seminar.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 18, in the House of Representatives, House Bill 1399 changing the definition of a motorcycle is scheduled to run.

Representative Dan Frankel has attached his amendments to reinstate a mandatory helmet law for all riders. Also there are amendments to make riders have mandatory insurance coverage and those under 21 to have special license plates.

Time is short. YOU MUST contact your House Member by phone in Harrisburg no later than 11:00 AM Tuesday morning and ask them not to support the Frankel amendments on HB 1399. This is a sneak attack by Frankel and he believes that ABATE has been caught sleeping and will not have time to respond and defeat his amendments.

Is he right? I hope not! I will be there from 9 AM until the vote is taken and do everything I can to contact legislators and ask their support for HB 1399 but to defeat the Frankel amendments.

EPA UNDER SCRUTINY CONCERNING E15 – CALL TO ACTION! — 
Congressman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has introduced HR 3199, a bill that would require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to seek independent scientific analysis on the affects of 15-percent ethanol blend gasoline.

The bill would not overturn the option for ethanol to continue to be sold, it simply asks for more study on the use of an E15 blend; something the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has been asking for as well.

“The EPA’s decision to allow E15 into the marketplace will impact every American who owns a car, lawnmower, or boat. Automakers insist that using E15 will void warranties, lower fuel efficiency, and cause premature engine failure. In off-road engines, the effects can even be dangerous for users,” Sensenbrenner said.

“There are serious concerns that the EPA used only one Department of Energy test and rushed E15’s introduction into the marketplace. This test was limited in scope and ignored a plethora of evidence – albeit inconvenient evidence for the EPA – that shows E15 gasoline has a negative effect on engines.”

Sensenbrenner is very serious about this issue. He conducted his own study by questioning 14 automakers about the effect of an E15 blend on their products. The unanimous consent was grim. Everybody agreed that E15 would void warranties, damage engines and lower fuel efficiency.

The MRF requests that you contact your Representative in the United States House of Representatives and ask them to cosponsor HR 3199, the Sensenbrenner EPA E15 study bill.


NTSB WANTS MEDIAN IMPROVEMENTS

A recently released set of recommendations by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) includes one that specifically addresses cable barriers. The NTSB asks that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) work with the States to define the criteria regarding where cable barriers are placed, and to research the safety risks associated with cable barriers.

You can’t make this stuff up. Rickey D. Holtsclaw, a Houston, Texas police officer for almost thirty-two years, was recently forced to retire because of his insistence on enforcing ordinances restricting obnoxious motorcycle noise. Officer Holtsclaw faced pressure within the Houston police department and from pro-noise motorcyclists to stop enforcing the law. Officer Holtsclaw received little or no support from elected officials in Houston.

Holtsclaw decided to start issuing tickets to what he perceived as “loud motorcycles”. After a few months of writing tickets caught the attention of his commanding Patrol Sergeant who ordered him to cease issuing those kinds of tickets. He explained that the law is so vague that it is unenforceable. However, Holtsclaw broke orders and continued on his mission to silence Houston.

According to Holtsclaw it was the upper levels of the Houston Police Department, Mayor Annise Parker, Houston’s City Council, and Houston’s Legal Department that forced him into retirement.

Enjoy your freedom while it lasts Houston, because you know for every one like this guy there is another around the corner just waiting.

The MRF does not advocate for breaking of any law. We do, however, oppose blatant motorcyclist discrimination like this.

10 Veggies to Have on Hand, Part 2–Last Thursday’s Tip covered some of my favorite healthy kitchen staples – today I present the rest of the list. I recommend keeping your kitchen stocked with each of these as it comes into season:

1. Beets: The deep red color of these root vegetables comes from anthocyanins, phytonutrients that protect against carcinogens and may help prevent heart disease. Beets are delicious hot or cold, versatile and inexpensive.

2. Squash. With a wide variety of types, flavors, shapes, and sizes, squash is readily adaptable to any occasion – it can even be used in pie! It provides beta carotene, potassium, and fiber, nutrients that are necessary for good overall health.

4. Broccoli. This vegetable-platter classic and other cruciferous vegetables offer cancer-protective benefits. Broccoli is also a good source of vitamin K and calcium – both of which help keep bones strong. It is tasty both raw and cooked, and can be a stand out in soups, casseroles, and salads.

5. Mushrooms. Prized for their tonic effects, mushrooms can help address a host of illnesses. Maitake mushrooms (known as “hen of the woods” for their resemblance to the fluffed tail feathers of a nesting hen) are particularly valued in Asian cooking, as they have anti-cancer, anti-viral and immune-enhancing properties, and may also reduce blood pressure and blood sugar. Shiitake, enokidake and oyster mushrooms also have immune-boosting qualities, and are easily included in many main courses.

$500 WHISKEY BET LED TO A FATAL SHOOTING–
Almost 30 years after Carlton Richmond was murdered at a Lake County motorcycle clubhouse when he didn’t pay up on a bet over a bottle of whiskey, his killer was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison.

Though Robert Bostic could have been sent to prison for twice as long, Judge George Bridges noted that, with Bostic now 71, the ruling could be tantamount to a death sentence.

“The defendant was able to spend the last 29 years, three months and 22 days with his family,” Assistant State’s Attorney Ken LaRue said. “Carlton did not have that ability. His parents died without even knowing anyone was charged (with his murder).”

It took a jury three hours on Sept. 1 to convict Bostic following a four-day trial.

Richmond was a 31-year-old regional manager for Pizza Hut and had a wife and two sons at the time of his murder.

His widow, Victoria Hargis, read an impact statement in court, saying: “The emotional costs of having murder enter your lives is almost beyond telling. The plan you had envisioned for your life is no longer there. … Everywhere you turn another aspect of it has been shattered into so many pieces that you believe that you are part of the walking dead.”

During Bostic’s trial, prosecutors asserted that he shot Richmond after Richmond, an invited guest to the club, lost a bet for $500 that Bostic couldn’t down a fifth of whiskey in one continuous drink. When Richmond didn’t pay all of the money, Bostic became enraged and shot him, authorities said.

Bostic will have to serve about 14 ½ years of his sentence, LaRue said.

THE BIKER RELATIVE–
There is one in every family. Growing up our parents would always speak in hushed tones whenever their name would come up. The mysterious family member that was a faint memory. We remember their big boisterous voice, their long wild hair, their thundering laugh echoing throughout the house. Their clothes were allows worn and comfortable and they had that distinct smell to them.

As we grew up we would wait to hear their names come up. When our “biker” Aunt or Uncle was coming to visit. It seemed to put our parents out. Like it was a huge inconvenience, more so then when Aunt May would come to stay with her bitter hard candies and pinching our rosy cheeks. We would wait anxiously until we would hear the distinct rumble down the way. It was much different then the cars and trucks that would drive by every day. No there was a thunder to the sound. It echoed off of the plain clapboard houses, vibrating through the countryside until it struck us, resonating in our souls.

We would race our Schwinn or BMX bicycles to meet them. They always had a big smile to see us. Slowing to lets us catch up; we would race them back to the house. They would let us win until they finally snapped the throttle, kicking up dust leaving us far behind. They always seemed to be just getting off their bike by the time we skidded our bikes to a stop leaving long black streaks on the hard surface of the road.

Clamouring around we would begs for rides, then beg for permission from our parents to go. But we would always have to wait. Wait until the large army bag would be unstrapped from the back of the bike and stored inside. By then all the neighbourhood kids, the ones we had been bragging to all week about the coming of our “biker” relative would be there, circling around the massive machine.

Everyone would get a ride. Short hops around the block for the little ones sitting in front straddling the seat and the silky gas tanks, the older ones got to sit on the back for short blasts out on some deserted road before returning to worried parents.

The moments always stuck with us. Sometime forming us into what we are now; bikers, riders, motorcycle enthusiasts. Riding across the countryside, the rebel black sheep of our families for our “different” ways. Some we are close with. Some we haven’t seen in years, scorned by them for our long hair and loud music.

Time has moved on. Now it is our turn to be that mysterious relative who shows up out of the blue with the chrome steed and giving rides to the neighbourhood kids. It is up to us to pass the torch to the next generation. Ride on.

POLARIS REPORTS RECORD THIRD QUARTER 2011 Results; 26% Sales Growth–
MINNEAPOLIS, Oct 18, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today reported record third quarter net income of $67.6 million, or $0.95 per diluted share, for the quarter ended September 30, 2011, up 43 percent and 38 percent, respectively, from the prior year’s third quarter net income of $47.2 million, or $0.69 per diluted share. Sales for the third quarter 2011 totaled a record $729.9 million, an increase of 26 percent from last year’s third quarter sales of $580.1 million.

Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chief Executive Officer, stated that “Despite challenging economic conditions, we are pleased to report another record quarter of sales, net income and earnings per share. I am exceptionally proud of how the Polaris team continued to drive growth and productivity in the third quarter. Each of our businesses experienced strong sales growth in the period, primarily driven by sustained market share gains. North American consumer retail demand for Polaris products remains vital, increasing 16 percent. We also once again improved our profitability, with healthy gross profit margin and net income margin increases when compared to last year.”

“I am also pleased to report that our Monterrey, Mexico manufacturing facility shipped their 10,000th side-by-side product in the quarter, marking an important milestone while demonstrating the schedule fidelity and focus on quality that is a cornerstone of Polaris operations. 2011 Business Outlook

The Company is increasing its previously issued sales and earnings guidance and now expects full year 2011 earnings in the range of $3.10 to $3.16 per diluted share, an increase of 45 to 48 percent over full year 2010 earnings of $2.14 per diluted share. Full year 2011 sales are now expected to grow in the range of 30 to 32 percent from 2010.

Wine noted, “Given our year-to-date results, the positive momentum exhibited by our businesses, and the strong performance of our 2012 model year products introduced earlier this year, we are raising our full year 2011 sales and earnings expectations. We expect 2011 will be a record year for Polaris, demonstrating our commitment to making growth happen in spite of adverse economic conditions.

“Looking ahead to 2012, we expect the overall economic climate to remain challenging. However, we believe our business is well positioned to offset these headwinds, as we continue to execute our successful long-term strategy, invest in product innovation, and seize additional opportunities to sustain our momentum. While our current success means the sales and earnings comparisons will be much tougher in 2012, at this early stage we expect to have another year of increasing sales, net income and earnings per share.”

Off-Road Vehicle (“ORV”) sales, comprised of all-terrain vehicles (“ATVs”) and RANGER(TM) side-by-side vehicles, increased 25 percent year-over-year, to $486.2 million, during the third quarter 2011. This increase reflects significant North American market share gains for both ATVs and side-by-side vehicles. North American ORV unit retail sales from dealers to consumers for the 2011 third quarter were up low-teens percent year-over-year, with side-by-side vehicle consumer retail sales climbing significantly and ATV consumer retail sales down mid-single digits percent. As a result of consistently strong demand for Polaris products, North American ORV dealer inventories were up modestly compared to the third quarter of 2010, as higher side-by-side vehicle dealer inventory was largely offset by lower ATV dealer inventory.Polaris sales of ORVs outside of North America increased 59 percent compared to the third quarter 2010.

Snowmobile sales for third quarter 2011 were $95.1 million, an increase of 23 percent over third quarter 2010. These results reflect significantly reduced snowmobile dealer inventory levels entering the 2011 – 2012 selling season compared to the prior year, as well as the benefit of more higher priced snowmobiles shipping during the 2011 third quarter than in third quarter 2010.

On-Road Vehicle sales totaled $35.7 million, 77 percent higher than the same period in 2010, primarily due to Victory motorcycle sales increases. Sales of On-Road Vehicles to customers outside of North America increased 74 percent compared to the prior year’s third quarter. Third quarter North American heavyweight cruiser and touring motorcycle industry retail sales were up mid-single digits percent over the prior year’s third quarter, while Victory unit retail sales in North America increased upper-teens percent during the same period. In addition, a modest amount of On-Road vehicle sales related to the GEM and Indian Motorcycle Company acquisitions were recorded in the third quarter 2011.

Parts, Garments, and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales increased 21 percent during the third quarter 2011 to $112.9 million compared to the same period last year, with PG&A sales increasing across all businesses and geographies. During the 2011 third quarter the Company introduced over 200 new accessories and garments to the PG&A product line for the 2012 model year.

International sales totaled $97.9 million for the 2011 third quarter, a 59 percent increase over the same period in 2010. All regions and product lines experienced growth during the quarter driven by higher volume, and increased sales of higher priced side-by-side vehicles and motorcycles. Year-to-date, international sales totaled $293.2 million, an increase of 37 percent over the same period last year.

Gross profit was 28.3 percent of sales for the third quarter of 2011, up 230 basis points from 26.0 percent for the third quarter of 2010. Gross profit dollars increased 37 percent to $206.8 million for the third quarter of 2011, compared to $150.7 million for the third quarter of 2010. Continued product cost reduction efforts, production efficiencies on increased volumes, and higher selling prices were the most significant factors in this increase, partially offset by increasing commodity costs and unfavorable currency movements.

Operating expenses for third quarter 2011 decreased 90 basis points, as a percent of sales, to 14.1 percent of sales compared to 15.0 percent of sales for the same period last year as we gain leverage from the sales increases. Operating expenses in absolute dollars for the third quarter of 2011 increased 18 percent to $102.9 million compared to $87.1 million last year primarily due to continued investments in future growth opportunities and acquisition integration. This was offset somewhat by lower share-based incentive compensation plan expenses in the third quarter 2011, primarily as a result of the lower stock price at September 30, 2011 than a quarter ago.

Income from financial services increased to $6.3 million during third quarter 2011 from $4.1 million in the third quarter of 2010, primarily due to increased profitability generated from the retail credit portfolios with GE, HSBC, and Sheffield.

Non-operating other expense was $5.5 million in the third quarter of 2011, as compared to $1.5 million of income in the third quarter of 2010. The decrease in profitability was the result of foreign currency exchange rate movements and the resulting effects on foreign currency transactions related to the Company’s foreign subsidiaries.

BIKERNET STEALTH TECH REVIEW–  
The EVO re-build article at Bennett’s Performance is great! I love my 1991 EVO Springer. I also own a 2003 Electra Glide STD. Both are great bikes but I love my EVO the best, reliable, still performs well, over the years. I’ve only replaced my charging system.

I run an Andrews EV46 cam with REV-TECH adjustable pushrods and an S&S E carb. I have owned the bike for over 20 years and it is still my favorite bike to ride. Not many problems with my Electra Glide, I had to replace the starter drive gear. I replaced it with a Spyke unit, rest of the bike is stock.

One thing about the Twin Cams, if you own an ’05 an earlier and if you are approaching 35k—40k, have your cam tensioners checked. The ’06 models and later have the updated versions. This upgrade will hit your wallet, either with Harley-Davidson’s up grade kit or with an aftermarket kit. Never understood why Harley did not step up and warranty this problem, since it is a common problem? Oh I know why, MONEY!

REPORT FROM THE NEW BIKERNET AIRLINES–
On a transatlantic flight, a plane passes through a severe storm. The turbulence is awful, and things go from bad to worse when one wing is struck by lightning. One woman in particular loses it.

Screaming, she stands up in the front of the plane. ‘I’m too young to die,’ she wails. Then she yells, ‘Well, if I’m going to die, I want my last minutes on earth to be memorable! Is there anyone on this plane who can make me feel like a WOMAN?’

For a moment there is silence. Everyone has forgotten their own peril. They all stare, riveted, at the desperate woman in the front of the plane. Then a cowboy from Texas stands up in the rear of the plane, and takes off his hat. He is handsome, tall, well built, with dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He starts to walk slowly up the aisle, unbuttoning his shirt . . .One button at a time . . .No one moves . . .He removes his shirt . . .Muscles ripple across his chest . . …She gasps . . .He whispers . . .’Iron this . . . then get me a beer.’

In the infamous Bikernet shop we have projects galore and more projects arriving on a daily basis. Parts for the 45 Bonneville race bike hit the front gate for inspection earlier this week, passed with flying colors.

Brand spankin new S&S cases on the operating table waiting on the internals to arrive from R&R Cycle out of Manchester, N.H. * The flywheels have arrived as of wed. the 19th. Randy Torgenson at Hyperformance is handling the master build in the quest for speed, perfection and massive doses of adrenaline in the near future.
Monday, as I was rollin out of San Jose in a mild daze, I swapped a front wheel (above) for a Sportster front end that should work just fine at Bonneville in 2012!

The Bonneville Frame
Rick Tedder in Salem, Oregon is building a one off Bonneville dedicated frame that will debut at Woodburn early March, weather permitting.

Time to wrap up the Salts Flat record setting Panhead, seems that the pinion nut loosened up allowing a loose fit, the key sheared. Not to worry.

Dyna 97″ Project
Bennett’s Performance, Eric and his crew are standing on one foot waiting for all of the necessary parts for the 2004 Dyna, 97-inch Twin Cam build. We are using the finest street components, with an H-D, Screamin’ Eagle high-flow oil pump and cam support plate and spacers. Plus we are using a CCI, RevTech 97-inch, big bore, top end kit.

Randy at Hyperformance in Pleasant Hills, Iowa prepared the cases after 175,000 plus miles on a monster that Hardtailz in San Jose tuned from day one and turbo charged the last 5,000 miles. My hot rod spent the last 3 or 4 years as a 124″ spinnin the Avon’s coast to coast, the drag strip, with numerous passes on the Bonneville Salt Flats. MOTORCYCLE GARAGE OPEN HOUSE TO FEATURE APPEARANCE BY LAND SPEED RECORD HOLDER VALERIE THOMPSON–

Phoenix, AZ – October 19, 2011 – Award-winning bike builder, Bill Miko, will host an “Open House” for his new “Motorcycle Garage” on October 22 from 9 am to 5 pm. Scottsdale resident and 2-Time Land Speed Record Holder, Valerie Thompson will display her racing bike and be available for autographs. Located at 10846 N. Cave Road, the new facility will offer after-market performance parts and full-service mechanical support for Harley-Davidson and Buell owners.

According to Miko, “After far too many requests to improve their motorcycle experience by riders fed-up with the lack of workmanship available through bike shops and dealers, I decided to open the Motorcycle Garage. Our goal is to make it easy and affordable to have a bike built the way you see it in your “minds eye” while delivering performance to match. BIKERNET INSURANCE MEMO–
Keeping a Safe Distance From Vehicles = The Best Insurance You Can Get.

After 30 years in the business world and 40 years as a biker, I have developed a love for how insurance protects people and businesses. However, no insurance can match riding skill when it comes to riding a motorcycle safely. Let’s look at defensive riding and keeping safe distances behind other vehicles for example.


Keep Your Distance

Defensive driving is all about decreasing the odds of an accident. Your level of concentration must always be at its highest when on your bike so that you can decrease the odds of an accident. The distance needed to stop you and your motorcycle consists of three parts:


1. Concentration and Your Reaction Time

The level of concentration required to safely operate a motorcycle goes without saying. The closer you follow behind another vehicle, the more focused you have to be, all other things being equal. If you cannot maintain strict focus, increase your distance. The more distance you have the more time your brain can process any dangerous collision problem and to apply your brakes.


2. Concentration and Stopping Distance

This refers to the actual distance required to safely stop you from rear-ending the vehicle ahead. Road conditions are key here but so is your level of experience and accident-avoidance riding style. A relaxed, sightseeing ride often means our level of concentration is low and therefore, sudden surprises are not reacted to as fast as when you are focused on the road and the vehicles ahead of you.


3. Concentration and Transfer Time

This refers to the actual time required to release the throttle, apply the brakes and take any necessary maneuvers to avoid collision.


So, what is the best way to avoid a rear-end collision?

ABATE’s John Del Santo, commented about the 2-second and 3-second rules in a recent article. Here is his commentary:

“A motorcyclist was following a truck through Ramona that was pulling a tall utility trailer. When the traffic came to a stop, the rider saw that the trailer did not have brake lights…..too late. She swerved out over the yellow line to avoid the trailer, into the path of two lanes of oncoming traffic. Luck was on everyone’s side, because there was no collision. The rider swears to this day that the whole situation was the fault of the driver who did not have brake lights on their trailer.”

“There was a group of riders heading Northbound on the I-15 Freeway, which is four lanes wide at this point. The Lead bike slowed down a bit to avoid something in the road. The second bike slowed down a little more, the third bike slowed down even more……and the next five bikes smashed into each other and were spread all over the Freeway.”

It seemed like I had no sooner gotten off the phone when Bill called me and said they were flying out the next day to do Last Call, Carson Daly’s late night TV show. Thanks to the good folks at the History Channel willing to foot the bill, the limo was able to stay out an extra six hours, so Bill, and Paul got a chance to swing by Easyriders offices, and get the nickel tour.

The first stop was to meet “Clean” Dean, and Beatnik to get a firsthand look at the inner workings of Biker magazine. No trip to Dean’s office is complete without everyone going out on the balcony to watch the traffic on Highway 101, and chew the fat. Back inside Dean’s office Bill, and Paul got a chance to man the handlebars of the famous 3-man farting pole Boyd Coddington built especially for David Mann’s chili cook-off (David Mann’s Chili Cook-off was Bandit’s idea for us to help Dave raise some traveling money to move back to his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri).

The farting pole only seemed appropriate since Bill, and Paul are the stars of a TV cooking show — God knows what a Nutria propelled fart sounds like. From there we all wandered into Dave Nichols office, and the Hairy Bikers were able check out the Easyriders memorabilia Dave has hanging on his walls. We didn’t leave Nichol’s office until a lot of good stories were traded, and Dave’s bottle of expensive Rum was empty… sorry about that Dave.

We finished the day off with Bill, and Paul’s limo following the bikes up Malibu Canyon to the Rustic Canyon Grill for Weasel Wednesday. It was great meeting Bill, and Paul, the Hair Bikers in person, and special thanks go to Heather DiRubba, and Ashley Fidler for making it all happen.

KNOCK ‘EM DEAD–
Damn, I should be riding my Mudflap Girl FXR to the Love Ride. I need some hydraulic brake line fittings, then bleed my brakes, and finish the wiring.

I don’t know why this news kicked my ass, but it did. I got a late start, about 9:00 a.m., and it’s now 11:00 p.m. and I’m outta whiskey. Oh, woe is me. We’ve got Bonneville reports, girl features, bike features, Harley marketing reports from 1975, and more bad jokes headed your way. Plus there’s a handful of secret operations in the works. But for now,
