Hey,
I learn something every day. I won’t tell you what I learned this week. It was embarrassing, but valuable. I’m studying the economy, and listen to Dr. Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, during another senate hearing. How the hell does anyone get anything done?
The point I absorbed from this particular hearing was simple. We need to think long term and make decisions that will work for us ten years down the road. Innovation is another major topic regarding growth down the road.
A couple of reports are rolling in from the Cincinnati show. It was down again this year, but the folks who attended felt good about the outcome. “It wasn’t fulla tire kickers,” one attendee said. “We encountered folks who wanted to do business.”
On the down side very few new products glistened in the halls, although two come to mind of the top of my head. One is featured here in the news from JIMS for twin cams. This cooling filter system could be a major winner. Second is the reverse system from Baker, and we will publish a tech install from the magnificent Rogue next week.
“The V-Twin show was good but it keeps getting smaller every year. There are almost none of the smaller chopper parts guys there anymore,” said one attendee. “I think with the economy it is just too expensive for those shops.”
One other item stuck out at the show. As far as our reports indicate, no motorcycle or chopper manufacturers were represented. No Big Dog, Sucker Punch, Titan, American Iron, and the list goes on. They’re not all gone. In fact Big Dog is hanging on. Sucker Punch hopes to see a green light within three months, and Brass Balls projects building 60 motorcycles this year. The glass half empty cats are professing doom and gloom, but most of us old outlaws know that this is a constantly changing, discretionary business. So we’ll be back and get ready for the next surge. If we can keep the government off our backs the next run could be world wide. Keep your fingers crossed. Let’s hit the news:

S&S RECEIVES THE V-TWIN ENGINE OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR THEIR FLATHEAD POWER KNUCKLEHEAD ENGINE–(Viola, WI) High performance v-twin engine manufacturer, S&S Cycle Inc. announced that they have received the coveted “Engine of the Year” award for the new KN-Kone engine, at a ceremony held during the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati, Ohio. The award was given at a ceremony on Saturday evening February 6, at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati. The KN-Kone engine is a new product sold under S&S’ Flathead Power brand of vintage engine parts.
Accepting the award for S&S and Flathead Power were S&S VP of Product Development Scott Sjovall, and Flathead Power product line manager Eric Wangen. Eric was the driving force behind designing the KN-Kone and getting it into production. When asked where the KN-Kone rated on a coolness scale of 1 to 10, Eric immediately replied, “It would at least be an 11!”
The KN-Kone is a cool combination that looks like a Knucklehead top end grafted to an alternator style Shovelhead crankcase. The result is a very unique retro looking engine that will drop into any 1970-’99 big twin chassis. It can be used in an earlier chassis if the longer late style transmission shaft is used. Klassic Knuckle kool has the bright lights of an alternator charging system and the compatibility with the modern primary, clutch, and transmission goodies.
The KN-Kone joins an extensive selection of high quality vintage engines and components in the Flathead Power product line.

UNCLE MONKEY EXPLAINS HOW THE HOG ATE THE CABBAGE–The motorcycle. The motorized two-wheel contraption that inspires us, moves us and is ingrained into us. In the beginning the motorcycle was a very humble experiment to attach a motor to a bicycle frame, but very quickly that idea gave way to the modern motorcycle, purposely built for the rigors of riding. Beyond the basic two wheels, motor, transmission and frame the motorcycle has stayed true to its roots. But the motorcycle is changing more and more each year.
Beside the obvious improvement to engines et cetera, style has become more and more diverse. The basic motorcycle of our past befitted from the addition of bags and windscreens separating into cruisers and baggers. As technology grew and performance accelerated into the stratosphere the bike changed again for racing both on the track and off.
Today motorcycles come in many shapes, sizes and styles. Each one designed to appeal to a specific market. There are no wrong bikes. But even beyond what we find on the showroom floors we see the custom market – garage built bikes have never varied so much. A custom bike show today has everything from bobbers and wild stretched out choppers, to hubless fat tired mutant machines that would look more at home in a sci-fi graphic novel then today’s streets.
It is a very fortunate time to be a motorcycle enthusiast. Customizing motorcycles still goes on even though the economy isn’t. It is because the motorcycle offers us what few other things can. Our own two hands can build them with only a drawer full of tools. There is no need for hundreds of square feet of room for hoists and lifts, armies of friends to lift car bodies from full frames. Many a bike has been built and will be built on back porches and garden sheds. Motorcycles because of their compact size and relative simplicity allow us to work in cramped corners, with only our imagination limiting us. As long as we can dream it, we can build it and ride it.

Amen, Uncle Monkey hit the nail on the head this week. Motorcycles represent the truest form of innovation left on the planet. We need to fight to keep this bastion of freedom free goddamnit, then spread the lifestyle around the world.–Bandit

On the other hand this cold weather is kickin’ my ass down here, things have been slow moving in the paint shop and someone came in and shared their Illness with me last week but I did manage to get the clear over Joe Cartoolow’s handy work, shook the bug and am starting to polish and prep the chassis parts, so I can start assembly on the Hydro bike project, so it’s all good!

AUSTRALIAN REPORTER COVERS THE V-TWIN EXPO–
Yes the weather around the country sucked once again and kept a lot of people from attending, and yes, the show is shrinking a bit more each year – but given the major players who attended it seems that it is still the place to be, and to be seen, if you want your product showcased to an audience of industry movers, shakers and dealers.
The news that I received from vendors regarding the event were somewhat mixed, but overall the mood seemed quietly upbeat, backed up with improved sales in December, better numbers through January, and a fast start to February. Fingers crossed.

BIKERNET INSURANCE BOSS MOTIVATIONAL SEMINAR–When it comes to life, you should be the one setting the flow.
Hey, by now your new year’s resolution has gone to hell and you’re back to your old habits. True or False?
As I look around my centers of influence (or lack thereof), I am constantly amazed at who’s in charge of their life and who is not. People seem to just get so caught up in “activities” that they tend to “go with the flow” instead of creating their own life’s flow – – – The flow of life that makes them appreciative others, enjoy simple moments, and the flow that makes them just be plain happy to be alive.
Look-it, we all know shit happens. But to the degree that you control your actions and your intentions, you can do a lot to control the flow and speed of life. Here are some tips:
1. Stop Rushing Around
Take a moment each morning to plan your day. Start your day right and put your mindset and thoughts in the right positive “I’m in control” frame of mind. Feel positive. Forget the negative. Life is good. The alternative sucks. Train your mind to plan positively and you will be amazed at the outcomes over time. Practice slowing down.
2. Learn To Say NO!
How many times is your life’s true, normal flow disrupted because you’ve allowed someone else to control your flow? They, not you, have added things to your day. It’s time to cut your “to do” list in half. Delegate it or scrap it. If it’s not mission critical to your day, forget about it. With every single day of practice, you’ll get down to 2-3 critical must-do items and the rest will fade out.
3. Develop a “ME” Day Plan
It is amazing what a “me” day will do for your life’s flowlike state of mind. Sure, it’s not easy to get away from all the day’s trappings but plan for it. Make it happen at least one day every ten days. Get focused on “YOU” for a change and not everybody and everything else. Get on the Harley, go to Australia, get away from your day-to-day routine, or simply stay in bed all day with a good book. Whatever it is, its got to break your hectic flow pattern that drives your life. If nothing else, slow down on that “me” day.
4. Commit To Exercise
It is always amazing to me how regular exercise helps create better feelings in your head. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes. At the very least, go for a brisk walk around the neighborhood. Do something that will make you feel alive and vibrant physically.
5. Life Is About Creating Yourself
Remember folks, life is short and fragile. You can be here one moment and gone the next. Tomorrow may never come. Best to simplify your life now so that you, your family and your friends can get the very best of you while you are here on this earth. You are in charge of creating your life’s flow so think hard about how you will “get in the zone” to making it happen. Go ahead! Take charge and create the life flow you want. Don’t wait. Create the life flow pattern you want and need to be the best you can be. Do it now.
The Bottom-Line
Hey, at the end of the day it’s all about BALANCE. When you are in balance, things flow beautifully and easily. Things are fun. You end up at the right place at the right time, meeting the right people and being offered the best opportunities. You begin to feel calm, grounded, energized and happy most of the time. So get control of your life’s flow now and thrive throughout 2011 and beyond.

NEW ATK V-TWINS MAY BE HEADING INTO H-D DEALERSHIPS–We’ll see and bring you reports. Frank White the boss of ATK motorcycles called the other day and sent over his business plan. It’s still sorta hush hush, but here’s some basic info. We will bring you updates at the plan and the marketing strategy come together.
Frank’s believes the market has changed drastically for Harley-Davidson dealers and they need a true entry level motorcycle line.
Here’s some history behind ATK: S&T Motors (formerly known as Hyosung-Suzuki Motors) was founded in 1978 and began producing Japanese
Suzuki motorcycle designs. In 1986, they established their own research and development and began mass
production of their own designs with their own engines ranging from 50cc to 650cc. In June 2007, the company was
acquired by S&T (Science & Technology) group with a new name of S&T Motors. S&T group consists of five publicly
traded companies listed on Korean Stock Exchange. S&T Daewoo is also a tier-one supplier of automotive parts for
GM and also supplier for Hyundai, another quality Korean manufacturer. Starting in 2012 Hyosung will provide ATK
many of the key components whereby ATK will then assemble motorcycles in the USA.
ATK?s business model is designed to provide quality built, V-Twin based products that are focused on a viable
customer niche below that of Harley-Davidson?s existing product offerings. We believe that these true entry-level
motorcycles will complement Harley-Davidson models by enhancing brand equity and help create a new customer
base while they contribute to the success and essential profitability of your dealership.
The timing of the current market dynamic may be presenting you with an opportunity to develop a unique symbiotic
relationship with ATK, which may act to create long term benefits for your Dealership. They have the products, the
resources and the relationships to bring these motorcycles to your showroom floor today. ATK entry-level
motorcycles will act as the perfect customer incubator bringing future Harley-Davidson customers to your dealership
for generations to come.
ATK believes they can help Dealerships:
ATK TO PROVIDE HD DEALERS AN AFFORDABLE ENTRY LEVEL STREET BIKE: For years H-D dealers
have been asking the motor-company to introduce an affordable entry level street bike. ATK introducing an
affordable entry level street bike under the ATK brand name will fill that void. The 250 V-Twin would be an
ideal “Riders Edge” training motorcycle and when your training class is complete you will have a product to sell
to those students. (the ATK brand has NOT been approved by H-D to be a part of their “Riders Edge” program)
To many of us this deal may sound quirky, but ya gotta admit it’s innovative, and that’s what it’s all about. We’ll bring you additional reports in the near future. We’ve asked Frank to come to the Wilmington ghetto, Grand National, Interplanetary headquarters for questioning. We’ll dust off the water board in the basement and let you know what we find out.–Wilburn Roach
THE GHOST OF WEST COAST CHOPPERS–This used to be packed with bikes and Monster Garage projects:
The guy who was there told me they were packing up all his fixtures and jigs and moving them to his 8,000 square foot building in Austin. He’s got a 1 year contract (no comment) to drive for an off road team and then he’ll decide what he does next. All of his products (wheels, frames, engine accessories, etc.) have already been out-sourced – probably in Mexico because I heard he had a polishing business down there.
I’m sure he won’t go hungry.

NEW RULE AT THE BLACK HILLS RALLY–The Sturgis city council approved a new ordinance limiting the time temporary structures can be in place before being open for business. The ordinance now allows vendors a seven-day period to set up their tents before they are selling their goods and four days to take them down. 2011 SOFTAIL RECALL ALERT– Citing the possibility of a deadly crash, Harley Davidson urges owners of 2011 Softails to check their mail for a recall notice. 6,964 owners are affected by the latest recall regarding their Softail manufactured between June and October 2010 (whose motorcycles feature security system kits accessories) These particular motorcycles feature a defect of the body control modules that results in an incomplete seal. As a result, there is the possibility of water seepage into the modules, which in turn risks engine stalls. If the rider is operating the motorcycles when the stall occurs, a (potentially deadly) crash is possible.

New Engine ! VERRRRY Cool–
Saving the World Two Strokes at a Time
This is no wimp engine.
It’s a two cylinder with four pistons delivering 300+ Horse Power
It’s extremely small and very efficient and is presently in use in test applications
The configuration below is equivalent to a extremely ballsy four cylinder engine
When doubled, it’s an extremely ballsy 600+ H.P. engine
It’s called OPOC (Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder), and it’s a turbocharged two-stroke, two-cylinder, with four pistons, two in each cylinder, that will run on gasoline, diesel or ethanol. The two pistons, inside a single cylinder, pump toward and away from each other, thus allowing a cycle to be completed twice as quickly as a conventional engine while balancing it’s own loads.
The heavy lifting for this unconventional concept was performed Prof. Peter Hofbauer. During his 20 years at VW, Hofbauer headed up, among other things, development of VW’s first diesel engine and the VR6.
The OPOC has been in development for several years, and the company claims it’s 30 percent lighter, one quarter the size and achieves 50 percent better fuel economy than a conventional turbo diesel engine.
They’re predicting 100 MPG in a conventional car.
For a good demo, See:

Although Ducati appears to have quietly put its retro SportClassic line in mothballs, rival Moto Guzzi is keeping the old-school-is-cool theme alive, recently showing off two new models said to be slated for 2012. The bikes, a scrambler version of the well-received V7 Classic and an all new 1,400cc touring bike, were shown at parent company Piaggio Group’s international dealer meeting in Monte Carlo January 27 and 28.
The new V7 Scrambler is based on the popular V7 Classic that also spawned the V7 Sport Classic. The new scrambler model differs only in styling cues, with an Arrow exhaust system featuring twin high pipes on the right side of the bike, fork gaiters, polished aluminum fork legs, higher bars, different side panels, rubber knee pads on the gas tank, and a unique to the scrambler headlamp shell with integrated instruments. Otherwise, it’s a standard V7 Classic.

ORANGE COUNTY CHOPPERS RENEWED FOR A SECOND SEASON OF AMERICAN CHOPPERS–“Renewed for a second season set to air this spring” – I visited OCC yesterday and the tv crew was busy filming new episodes. And I say, “good on ’em” they screen in over 160 countries, an unprecedented, amazing phenomenon and millions of kids go to sleep all over the planet with dreams of choppers dancing before their eyes.
That’s what OCC has done for this industry; they’ve had a bigger positive influence on custom bike building and chopper riding than anyone who has ever gone before them or is likely to come afterward. And they are also a power for peace around the world. People love the show and in its way it counteracts some of the hate that many countries have for America. Nobel Peace Prize for Paul Sr? Stranger things have happened.

HOT NEW PRODUCT FROM JIMS MACHINE–
The patent pending, JIMS Cam Cover Heat Sink is designed to help reduce
running temperatures of high performance, big inch motors that often run
hotter than smaller, stock displacement motors.
JIMS and Cornerstone Metrology teamed up to integrate a cool looking “fin pack” design into a stock cam cover insert that when riding, uses the cooler outside air to help reduce cam cover temperatures. Installation uses the existing timing
cover hardware and only takes minutes.
JIMS Cam Cover Heat Sink is manufactured from top quality aluminum here in the USA and is available in
Chrome Plated, No.2311 or RawCut Black, No.2303 and ranges in MSRP from $74.10 to $98.50, depending on finish.

A DECADE DEVOTED TO FREEDOM AND INNOVATION–I get sorta nervous when I discuss politics. I would rather drink whiskey and touch a redhead. But we can drink whiskey, touch redheads, and ride chromed-out choppers because a group of wild men centuries ago gave their lives for freedom.
Life is way too complicated now. Like a senator recently said, “They said the bill is for cleaner air. How could I not vote for it.” Then it came back to bite him in the ass. Now we fight the EPA for our livelihood. It’s fuckin’ nuts.
But I believe we can put freedom back into our lives. With education folks can make individual decisions regarding their lives and we don’t need masses of legislation, regulation, and costly bureaucracies to make it happen. We just want to ride free, right?
Ride Forever,
