Hey,
Suddenly shop business has slowed. This is the best time of the year to have a shop service your bike, or performs upgrades. We are going to feature some tech upgrade notions over the next couple of weeks.
We are also going to remind you about a couple of shops in the SoCal area. These are top-notch shops with teams who can do anything, and do it well. We work with Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach for Engine rebuilds, and Branch/O’Keefe for terrific headwork. And if we need sheet metal or fabrication, Illusions is just south of us in Orange County, but don’t hold that against them.
I’m sure you have shops in your neighborhood. They suffer during winter months. It’s actually the best time, when they aren’t slammed, to have them focus on your ride. Then you have the winter months to break in your new upgrade slowly, and detail your bike for the upcoming riding season.
Let’s hit the news:
WIRE PLUS Introduces New Big Dog “HCM” Retrofit Kit–Winfield, KS- Wire Plus Powersports Electronics is proud to introduce their new, state-of-the-art “HCM” Retrofit Kit for all EHC module equipped 2004-2008 Big Dog Motorcycles. This replacement module is the fix to get rid of the EHC for good. This is the perfect fix for all Big Dog owners tired of not being able to start their bike due to electrical problems. This replacement module works with all of the switches used on all 2004 models through current Big Dog Motorcycles. Each kit comes complete with Wire Plus’ proven power module and switch control module configured to work with the ground input switches used on the Big Dog Motorcycles.
Wire-Plus products are built to survive the rugged urban environment. Their products feature vibration resistant, solid-state breaker technology (the breakers never have to be replaced) and a replaceable start relay that can be purchased at any auto parts store.
Their power modules are submersible waterproof and very compact in size with harnesses that are engineered to be smaller than any other on the market. The lighting control module controls the operation of the front, rear turn signals, and provides load equalization and auto cancelling. It also operates the rear turn signals as brake lights and running lights with one wire hook-up. Wire Plus’ main focus is on the reliability of everything that they manufacture.
Don Bromlow, National Sales Manager for Wire Plus stated, “We have added ring terminals; butt splices, and wire to the kits to make the hook-up of the ground wires easier. We have also added wire and butt splices for the wires that have more than one wire going to a pin. Combining more than one wire in a pin could compromise the weatherproof qualities of the DEUTSCH connectors. We recommend using a DEUTSCH crimper when making the connections and have these available as well.
For those interested in obtaining more information on Wire Plus, you can reach them at (620) 221-2417 or check them out online at www.wire-plus.com or email them at sales@wire-plus.com.

I will publish World Run, Chance Hogan number two, in 2012. Most of the chapters are already in the Cantina, for member viewing. But then Chance Three will begin, “Freedom Run,” in January. CRAZY HORSE TRIKE FOR A VETERAN– Clark created the Night Stalkers. He was in Black Hawk Down and also in Iran when the choppers crashed.
I gave him this Crazy Horse trike when I found out he could no longer ride a two-wheel bike. As you know, Crazy Horse can use skirted fenders. Clark loves his bike as you can tell.

CRAZY HORSE RESPONDS TO POLARIS REGARDING INDIAN–
Our most recent response to Polaris.–
Dear Andrew,
Perhaps you misunderstood John White and Crazy Horse’s position and the reason for the meeting to discuss matters. Crazy Horse is not interested in any talks that are predisposed to require it to transition away from its current logo of Crazy Horse in a traditional headdress that specifically identifies the wearer of the headdress as Crazy Horse. Although John White and Crazy Horse believe that a resolution can be reached between them and Polaris, that resolution cannot be achieved by demanding the transition that your talking points present as a given.
In fact, the talking points have as an agenda item “Crazy Horse’s proposal for ceasing the use of the Tank Badge and Headdress Design.” This agenda item is totally contrary to our discussion by phone where I requested that you present a proposal so that my clients can consider it and determine if a meeting can be fruitful.
If it is Polaris’ position that Crazy Horse come up with a proposal, that is easy. Crazy Horse proposes that it keeps its Crazy Horse identifying Logo and Tank Badge and that Polaris acknowledge that it does not infringe any legitimate and enforceable trademark rights Polaris owns. That is our proposal.
If Polaris has a counterproposal, please provide it and then if it shows that Polaris is willing to engage in talks in good faith, then we can talk about a meeting and talking points. Please remember that it was Crazy Horse and John White proposed that we meet to discuss a resolution, and please know that Crazy Horse and John White are still willing to engage in such talks if Polaris exhibits a willingness to approach the talks in good faith and with an open mind.

THE HUNT FOR R1 ENGINEERING– I am trying to find out more about their and R1 engineering’s (http://www.r1engineering.com/) girder front suspension. I am working on a special landspeed bike, and I think that would be a wonderful addition. They were the machine shop that did the work. Kneeslider says they were offering them for sale (in the comments section).
http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2008/06/05/r1-with-girder-front-end-update/
RMD Billet, is/was located in Jasper MN. They were listed on a brief product update on your site, back in 2007. I have found some forum references for them scattered around but nothing concrete. Except for the R1engineering. They used to do some gorgeous 3 piece billet wheels and secondary drive covers for HD’s, for what I can tell. Your site seems to be the only place that isnt a forum and to have actual pics.
I have tried calling the numbers that one would find on the net, but I think they are disconnected….product of the tough times???

LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM DAVE ZIEN, THE MILLION MILE HARLEY MAN– For those who have served, suffered & sacrificed. The Sights, Sounds & Stench of War are as real as if only yesterday. We share a special Spiritual Transcendence – With all those who have ever lived loved & cherished Freedom. Even before the Great Revolutionary War, we are as one.
When asked, every Veteran has a story to tell. Whether serving in a war zone, experiencing combat or not – the sharing can become contagious enthusiasm and refreshing optimism.
There were happy times into the realm of jubilance. Ironies, miracles, humor and sometimes-even survivors’ guilt penetrate deep. Never again will the sense of cohesiveness and camaraderie be so exhilarating. Remembering and honoring – assures being honored and remembered.
The control over millions of dollars of equipment and human lives can never be equaled. The ability to control human destiny and deliver the death sentence to the enemy is trained into us right from Boot Camp.
My friend, Ted Nugent says “If people don’t know how to or want to defend themselves – they deserve to die!” Whoa Ted; let us first give deep reverent prayer to almighty God.
The best way to remember the deceased is to honor the living. Though their bodies may be in the ground, their Souls in Heaven, their Spirit is indeed among – between and within us!
Veterans and their descendents can order military personnel, medical records with updated metals and ribbons. County Veterans Officers can assist. Long lost memories will be rekindled. Remarkable histories of the deceased will come alive!
On a monument stone at the Wisconsin Veterans Tribute in Cadott, WI are emblazoned these words: “We cherish the mystique and heritage of good-ole fashioned Wisconsin patriotism by living the freedoms that Veterans sacrificed for and loving the Wind that beckons us!” Governor Tommy Thompson, Captain, National /Guard Reserves 1966-1976.
Okay, let’s have some fun. The Marine Corps hymn says “If the Army & Navy ever look upon Heavens Scenes, they will find the gates are guarded by US Marines – ” Semper Fi”
May you have hunger in the heart, fire in the belly and souls absolutely on fire!
God Bless You, Your Loved ones and our troops..

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION REPORT–Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner Receives Award for Supporting Motorcyclists
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports that ABATE of Wisconsin awarded Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner with its Certificate of Appreciation. The award goes to individuals who go above and beyond when it comes to protecting motorcyclists’ rights. In years past, the award was reserved for ABATE members only; this is the first time it has ever been awarded to anyone outside the organization.
Sensenbrenner has redefined what it means to go “above and beyond.” He has worked tirelessly to protect motorcyclists’ rights on every front at the federal level for over 35 years. “Not only are the motorcyclists of Wisconsin in Mr. Sensenbrenner’s debt, every motorcyclist in this country has benefitted from his steadfast support,” said Jeff Hennie, MRF Vice President Government Relations and Public Affairs.
Representative Sensenbrenner has been the lead advocate for stopping motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints, supporting crash avoidance over safer crashing, and lately the ethanol fuel issue.
The MRF also commends ABATE of Wisconsin for fostering a model relationship with an elected official. This should be an example to everyone for developing a good working relationship with an elected official.
Congressman Sensenbrenner, upon receiving the award, said, “I want to thank ABATE of Wisconsin for their tireless work to raise awareness on issues that affect motorcyclists. I am honored to work with them to make their voices heard in Washington, and I look forward to continuing our efforts to reduce unnecessary and burdensome federal government regulations.”
John Reblin, who presented the award, pointed out that, “Representative Sensenbrenner was chosen because of the support he has given motorcyclists throughout the years with his common sense approach with such things as HR 748 to prohibit the EPA from authorizing the use of gasoline greater than 10 percent ethanol in certain vehicles, and HR 904 which would prohibit the Federal DOT from providing grants or any other funds to another unit of government for motorcycle-only checkpoints.”
The MRF joins ABATE of Wisconsin in recognizing the leadership and dedication of the Honorable F. James Sensenbrenner.
THE PERFECT FEMALE CAR–Renault and Ford have joined forces to create the perfect small car for women. Mixing the Renault ‘Clio’ and the Ford ‘Taurus’ they have designed the ‘Clitaurus’. It comes in pink, and the average male car thief won’t be able to find it — let alone turn it on – even if someone tells him where it is and how to do it. Rumor has it though, that it leaks transmission fluid once a month, and can be a real bitch to start in the morning!
Some have reported that on cold winter mornings, when you really need it, you can’t get it to turn over. New models are initially fun to own, but very costly to maintain, and horribly expensive to get rid of. Used models may initially appear to have curb appeal and a low price, but eventually have an increased appetite for fuel, and the curb weight typically increases with age.
Manufacturers are baffled as to how the size of the trunk increases, but say that the paint may just make it LOOK bigger. This model is not expected to reach collector status. Most owners find it is best to lease one, and replace it each year.
Oh, and the female car models of most makes don’t come with turnsignals…
FRANK’S MUDFLAP GIRL BIKE ENCOUNTERS–I’m trying to wrap up the primary system on my son’s FXR project, so I can mount the mid controls, pegs, then the Mr. Lucky weld on Kickstand. I stumbled into a problem mounting up the outer primary. It wouldn’t close, so I reached out to the master at Primo Rivera:
All enclosed belt drives have a wider front pulley then the original chain drive sprocket. It is therefore necessary to do some relieving on the outer primary gussets to be sure that there is no interference. Also check the belt to make sure it is not rubbing on any portion of the outer of inner. If there is conflict, you then must relieve the conflicting surface by grinding usually with a die grinder.
This is all covered usually in our installation guides.

TEXTING BANS HIT THE STREETS– PA Bans texting while driving… and a list of other states that ban it as well.
How many times have you witnessed drivers texting behind the wheel, not paying attention to anything on the road?
Texting while driving has become a major issue over the past few years, and many accidents are attributed to it on a daily basis.
But as this issue continues diverting driver’s attention from the roads, more and more states are placing a legal ban on texting while driving.
And the lastest is Pennsylvania, which became the 35th state to ban texting while driving. The potentially lifesaving bill was signed into law Wednesday by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett.
The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) reports that the new law makes texting behind the wheel a primary offense, meaning that police can pull over motorists for that violation alone.
The law will go into affect in April 2012, and the fine is set at $50, the GHSA reports.
Upon hearing the news about a state to ban texting earlier this year, North Dakota, the American Motorcycle Association responded.
Peter terHorst (AMA Spokesman) says: “The American Motorcyclist Association is encouraged by the number of states taking action to penalize distracted driving activities such as texting while operating a motor vehicle.
“Distracted or inattentive driving has become a major concern to the motorcycling community. Motor vehicle operators engaged in these behaviors are not just a danger to motorcyclists – they endanger pedestrians, bicyclists, roadside assistance and emergency medical personnel, highway construction workers, and law enforcement personnel. The AMA acknowledges that motorcyclists share this responsibility as well.
“The AMA supports legislation that includes enhanced penalty options to be determined by the courts. Examples include enhanced fines, operator’s license suspension, points assessed on an operator’s record, community service, and imprisonment.”
The first state to make the roads a bit safer for motorcyclists was Washington, which signed the texting ban into law in May, 2007. Since then, many states jumped on the safety trend.
But there are still 15 states to go. If you’re a motorcyclist in one of these 15 states, there are ways to be heard. Log onto the rights’ section of the AMA website to become active in ensuring not only your own safety, but the safety of every motorcycist riding in your state.
Following is a list of states where Texting While Driving is Illegal:
•Alaska
•Arkansas
•California
•Colorado
•Connecticut
•Delaware

MORE CALIFORNIA CHECK POINTS COMING–San Rafael Police Department to Combat Traffic Deaths and Injuries with Special Program .
San Rafael Police Department has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways. The $129,992 grant awarded by the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to San Rafael will aid in the city’s ongoing effort to improve traffic safety and the quality of life. Special traffic enforcement measures will be instituted by the SRPD as part of an on-going commitment to keep our roadways safe through both enforcement and education.
The grant will assist in efforts to deal with traffic safety problems and to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in traffic collisions. Traffic deaths from all causes declined in California by 11.9 percent, from 3,081 killed in 2009 to 2,715 in 2010. While alcohol impaired deaths saw a sharp decline last year, DUI deaths remain the largest sector, at more than 30 percent of traffic fatalities.
The grant activities will specifically target motorcycle Safety, DUI offenders, drivers with suspended or revoked licenses, red light running, and speeding. This will be done through the use of DUI/driver’s license checkpoints, special enforcement operations, and court stings where DUI offenders with suspended or revoked driver licenses get behind the wheel after leaving court.
“Thanks to the dedicated hard work of agencies like the San Rafael Police Department, California has the fewest traffic fatalities since 1944,” said OTS Director Christopher J. Murphy. “While this is good news, we know that only by keeping the pressure on through enforcement and public awareness can we hope to sustain these declines and save lives.”
DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints are a key component of the grant. These highly visible, widely publicized events are meant to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.
For the second year in a row special motorcycle safety enforcement operations will be conducted under this grant. Motorcycle fatalities have finally dropped in California, following a decade long rise in deaths. In 2010, 353 motorcyclists were killed, a 37 percent drop from the all time high for California in 2008. SRPD officers will be conducting specialized enforcement efforts throughout the next twelve months. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas and events where motorcycle crashes and incidents have occurred. Officers will be cracking down on traffic violations made by regular vehicle drivers and motorcyclists that result in far too many motorcycle collisions, injuries and deaths.
“We are on the right path with declining fatalities,” said Murphy. “We have to stick to that path so that some day we can reach the vision we all share – Toward zero deaths, every 1 counts.”
Funding for this program is from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

MICHIGAN HELMET REPEAL COMING AND YOU CAN HELP MAKE FREEDOM IMPORTANT ONCE MORE–The following is the contact information for Governor Rick Snyder. There are several phone #’s that you can call to voice your opinion to the Governor along with his fax, e-mail and mailing address.

I could give you some sample letters asking for the support of SB 291, but it would be more effective if you just say in your own words why you are not going to spend time riding through Michigan because of the helmet law, and that you are not going to spend a Hundred dollars or so to buy a helmet for the privilege to do so.
Tell him how you would like to come to Michigan for a vacation, but for now you choose to ride in helmet free states, that surround Michigan.

Dear Governor,
We live is such interesting times. Freedom seems to be a lost spirit, replaced by more and more stringent regulations. Too often these regulatory bodies become administered by control freaks, then they become corrupt and expensive.
In this rare case you have the opportunity to say once more, “Freedom is important.” Sometimes I wonder if we are sending troops abroad to fight for freedom, or are we bringing the largest regulatory body in the world to other shores.
I could line up a group of folks who could tell you how dangerous helmets are. Motorcycles have an inherent ability to avoid accidents, their agility. Anything that prevents or restricts vision, hearing, or mobility, can cause an accident. Then there’s that over-confident nature caused by wearing protective gear, so it’s not all about helmets being the end-all answer.
I’m not asking for helmets to disappear. I’m asking for the freedom to make a choice whether to wear a helmet or not, and whether to wear a full-face helmet, or a small light one. I just want this government to recognize freedom once more. I think we need to think about freedoms again and the joys in life, over protecting everything that moves. Should we enjoy life or just be safe?
All the best,
K. Randall Ball

ANOTHER TRAMP BOOK ORDER– Dropped the credit card on your site for my book. Ask the author for an autograph on my copy please. I have no idea why this means so much to me, but it does.
Oh forgot to tell you. I ran across a genuine Gary Bang hand made knife and sheath! Gary doesn’t sell these to anyone (me included). He does it for himself. I was talking to him and he mentioned he was doing this (a few yrs ago) I immediately said how cool it would be to own one. He told me to forget it.
I dig knives and have a small collection of those that have a personal connection to me (Sturgis knives, Daytona knives of yrs I attended the event) but this one made by the hands of a friend is just fantastic. Very similar to a very bitchin’ Panhead desk that I’m sitting next to, built by Bandit!
Thanks in advance for the read,

THE ULTIMATE T-SHIRT RUN ON BIKERNET–A lot of us grouse about T-shirt booths and dealerships, but you’ll get a kick out of Chuck Riddle’s story about riding all over the country to see Hooter’s girls and picking up a T-shirt at every H-D dealership.
When you look at these T-shirts they say much more than a Dealership’s name. They signify each region of our country, the history, the battles, the strengths, and the freedom to roam. Check it out, see if you don’t pick up on a sense of Freedom and how motorcycles represent what’s left of it in this country.
LIL’ JOES LEATHERS FOR THE HOLIDAY–Just for the riders who want the real shit, made for the cast of the Sons of Anarchy, and worn by club members all over the country. And best of all, each vest is made in America and will last a lifetime, unless you hit a deer at 80 mph.
My vest was still is one piece, but the deer shit all over it. Sin Wu wouldn’t let me wear it again. It’s still stashed around here somewhere.–Bandit
LONE STAR 2011. THE LITTLE RALLY THAT COULD–Watch out Daytona Bike Week, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Laconia, there’s a new national rally in Texas. In a mere ten years, one hurricane, and a change of owners The Lone Star Rally 10th Anniversary is now a bright star in the line up of big motorcycle events.
The difference is, the Lone Star Rally is only a weekend long whereas the other rallies last a week or more. Co-owned and produced by rally and event veteran, Melissa Penland and her incredible production crew, the rally is now a world class event attracting near a half million people.
The uniqueness of this rally is the relationship between the city and the rally officials. The City of Galveston rolls out the welcome carpet to a rally production team that is humble, professional, responsible, and respectful, and they know the exact ingredients it takes to create a tasty fare of treats for everyone on two wheels.
The best part is that year after year they keep on improving the mix. Adding genuine spice and serving it up is Jay Allen, the beloved founder of the legendary Broken Spoke Saloon, who is the rally Master of Ceremonies. His deep passion coupled with his history book knowledge of all things motorcycles continuously entertains the massive crowds. Allen brings his authentic motorcycle culture and industry experience and his years of operating a world class brand together to mastermind entertainment in a way that only he can do.
Rick “Dakota” Kempf of Motorcycle Cowboys was the organizer behind the debut of the very well attended Lone Star Rally All Star Roundup bike show on Pier 21. With over 100 entrants, there were bikes of all styles and makes including customs and backyard builds so incredible the judges’ (including Rick Fairless, Paul Yaffe, Jody Perewitz, and Puppy) enjoyed the challenge.
Sons of Anarchy characters “Opie” and “Chibs” happily signed autographs for lines that wrapped around the block and one fanatic had the signatures tattooed. Mike Ballard and Angie, including Paul the Leprechan, from Full Throttle Saloon on TruTV photo posed for eager fans. Cheered on by a rambunctious audience, Jay Allen and Jody Perewitz went head-to-head in a bitchin’ burnout below the stage to welcome Buck Cherry.
Rally music stars Jasmine Cain, Ryan Rolando, Farrell Webber and Big Engine, along with some awesome local acts, smoked the Budweiser and Jagermeister stages. Jared Blake, a finalist from NBC’s “The Voice” performed for the Long Star Rally Freedom Ride concert where he sang the National Anthem and then hauled off and kick started a country rock block of music that sent the Jager stage on fire.
Yes, all of these things, and that’s only a mere taste of the impressive activities that went on at Lone Star Rally 2011.
All in all success starts at the top and flows through the veins. With Melissa Penland as fearless leader of production operations, she is the perfect hostess of the rally. She’s keen on delivering a wonderful experience to the rally guests and the City of Galveston, one that creates lasting memories and friendships — and that type of leadership filters throughout the entire production family. Everyone’s goal in the rally team is for the customer to have a mega awesome time and for the city to feel the love. This is success. And it shows.
Now that the 2011 rally has wrapped, plans are now being sketched for 2012. With a renewed contract of several more years and the bonus of having the Seawall back to bring in the big rigs and more vendors, it looks like there’s going to be an even bigger smorgasbord of exciting new, motorcycle activities to enjoy.
P.S. Did I mention that I have a dream job working on the Lone Star Rally team? Thanks Melissa!

Seems the distributor drive gear needs to be changed to drive the Dyna S, from Biker’s Choice, distributor the opposite direction. The drive gear is in the mail from Accurate Engineering, while the world record setting hot rod is patiently waiting on the operating table for the gear change.
2004 106-inch Twin Cam build
Speaking of shop projects. On Tuesday we hand delivered the tastiest, hand made, grilled fish tacos in town to the best kept secret in Signal Hill, Ca., Bennett’s Performance. Eric and his crew took a short break to bullshit and talk hot rods in between fish tacos.
After lunch it was all business with a trip next door to visit with John O’Keefe at the Branch O’Keefe machine shop. After a quick tour of the pristine shop we discussed the 106-inch Twin Cam motor build. The cylinders and forged pistons (3.927 inches) are a kit from C. C. I., 96 inches with a stock crank or 106 inches with a 4 3/8 inch stroke.
We will run a set of Branch O’Keefe prepared heads for maximum air flow that will enter through a TOP SECRET Yankee Engineuity fuel-injected Throttle body. NO BUTTERFLY! This throttle body is a stock bore size and a direct replacement that has dyno sheet numbers that are very impressive. we’ll share the actual numbers when they become available. It’s secret remember?
John at Darkhorse Cranks has shipped the lower end, with a 4 3/8″ stroke to Bennett’s. John’s crank kits appear to be bullet proof with flawless machine work. A set of Crane roller rockers (built by S&S) on top with a Fueling, REAPER, .630 thousands lift, .630 thousands duration, gear drive cams for a breathe of fresh air.
We’re building an air pump not a grand piano.
Code of the West?
Happiness is a bad ass hot rod and a deserted, fresh chunk of asphalt winding through the mountains that’s painted with bright new stripes, in the middle of a tree lined, winding, moon lit night. Talk about a natural high, damn near as good as sky diving.

THIS JUST IN FROM BOLT OF CALIFORNIA– So no one freaks out over the new CA license plate law, if you post something about it, I have a suggestion.
In the same post about the law, please post the easy defense for the charge, if anyone gets a ticket for the new law.
Remember the blue dot law? It is illegal to have blue dots on your tail, brake, or rear turn signals?
But it is legal if your vehicle was manufactured before the blue dots became illegal.
So by the same judicial principle, if your bike is manufactured before the new license plate law, or especially if you already HAD a vertical plate bracket (keep your receipt) before the law took effect, your equipment is legal. If your vehicle equipment is legal today, they can’t pass a new law that makes it illegal tomorrow.
See for yourself:
CA Vehicle Code section 26102
In the event any equipment in actual use meets the requirements of this code or a department regulation adopted pursuant to this code, a subsequent regulation shall not require the replacement of the equipment and shall be applicable only to equipment installed after the effective date of the regulation.
It can be found in Division 12 Chapter 2 Article 16 of the Vehicle Code.

MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY– (excerpt from Warrior Culture of the U.S. Marines, copyright 2001 Marion F. Sturkey)
All U.S. Marines are gung-ho. But, few can match the vision and total commitment of the famous 13th Commandant, Gen. John A. Lejeune. In 1921 he issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921.
Gen. Lejeune’s order summarized the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps. It further directed that the order be read to all Marines on 10 November of each year to honor the founding of the Marine Corps. Thereafter, 10 November became a unique day for U.S. Marines throughout the world.
Soon, some Marine commands began to not only honor the birthday, but celebrate it. In 1923 the Marine Barracks at Ft. Mifflin, Pennsylvania, staged a formal dance. The Marines at the Washington Navy Yard arranged a mock battle on the parade ground. At Quantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Marine baseball team played a Cuban team and won, 9 to 8.
The first “formal” Birthday Ball took place on Philadelphia in 1925. First class Marine Corps style, all the way! Guests included the Commandant, the Secretary of War (in 1925 the term “politically correct” didn’t exist; it was Secretary of War, not Secretary of Defense), and a host of statesmen and elected officials. Prior to the Ball, Gen. Lejeune unveiled a memorial plaque at Tun Tavern. Then the entourage headed for the Benjamin Franklin Hotel and an evening of festivities and frolicking.
Over the years the annual Birthday Ball grew and grew, taking on a life of its own. In 1952 the Commandant, Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr., formalized the cake-cutting ceremony and other traditional observances. For example, Marine Corps policy now mandates that the first piece of cake must be presented to the oldest U.S. Marine present. The second piece goes to the youngest Marine. Among the many such mandates is a solemn reading of the Commandant’s birthday message to the Corps.
Like the U.S. Marine Corps itself, the annual Birthday Ball has evolved from simple origins to the polished and professional functions of today. Nonetheless, one thing remains constant, the tenth day of November! This unique holiday for warriors is a day of camaraderie, a day to honor Corps and Country. Throughout the world on 10 November, U.S. Marines celebrate the birth of their Corps — the most loyal, most feared, most revered, and most professional fighting force the world has ever known.

THAILAND MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURE POSTPONED UNTIL 2013– I feel Thailand should be on the verge of exploding onto the high-end motorcycle touring scene. We have been grasping at this throttle for years and now have a series of superb trips to showcase this, and thousands of miles and years of research to back it up.
Derek and I had gotten so excited about the prospects of hosting you all here on a brilliant motorcycle adventure. Are you free to discuss options? Maybe we can work something out. We’ve come this far it would be a shame to mothball it all at this point.
Kae from my office is preparing a summary of how we think the schedule works best, starting from arrival approx February 8th, up to the event Feb 10-12, and then post-event moto trip and other services.

WORLD-FAMOUS LEE ROY HARTUNG COLLECTION BRINGS GLOBAL COLLECTORS, SPIRITED BIDDING TO THE WINDY CITY– AUBURN, IN (November 9, 2011) – Auctions America by RM concluded its first full auction season on a strong note this past weekend, achieving over $3.95 million in total sales with 100% of lots sold at its highly-anticipated Lee Roy Hartung Collection sale in Glenview, Illinois (Nov. 3 – 5).
A labor of love carefully amassed over the past 50 years by Chicago collector, the late Lee Roy Hartung, the diverse collection spanned a broad range of Americana, from historic automobiles and motorcycles to bicycles, vintage memorabilia and one of the world’s largest and most complete license plate collections.
Auctions America specialists spent an intense two months preparing the collection for sale, sorting into almost 1600 individual lots, all of which were sold at ‘no reserve’ before a packed house. Illustrating the incredible interest generated by the sale, registered bidders hailed from over nine countries around the world. On a national level, bidders represented 45 individual US states. Onsite bidders were joined by a record volume of collectors on the telephone and Internet, resulting in fierce competition and lively bidding across the three days.
“We were honored to have been entrusted with the sale of the famed Lee Roy Hartung Collection and are very pleased with the results,” says Donnie Gould, president Auctions America by RM.
Top sale honors went to a magnificent series of timewarp motorcycles and automobiles, headlined by a rare and hotly-contested 1911 Flying Merkel Twin Belt Drive for an impressive $201,250 (pictured). A 1912 Harley-Davidson Single-Cylinder Belt Drive, believed to be among the best 1912 examples in the world, also drew lively bidding, selling for $115,000. The automobile offering also garnered significant attention, led by an exquisite, one-off 1950 Veritas BMW with coachwork by Spohn, for $195,500, and a thoroughbred 1950 Edwards R-26 Roadster, believed to be the 1950 inaugural Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winning example, for $143,750.
Additional notable sales included:
•Over 5,000 individual license plates, including state runs of Arizona and West Virginia license plates which realized $29,900 each;
•a magnificent assortment of timewarp and original bicycles, headlined by a Aero Cycle by Schwinn and an Elgin Antique Bicycle, which individually sold for $5,175 each; and,
•an original, double-sided illuminated garage sign for $34,500.
“From start to finish, Auctions America by RM did an incredible job with the preparation and presentation of the sale. For many, organizing such a large-scale event in such a short timeframe would be a daunting task. The Auctions America team took on the challenge with great enthusiasm, professionalism and efficiency,” said Marjorie Cox, lifelong friend of Lee Roy Hartung following the auction.
Auctions America by RM kicks off its 2012 auction season with the presentation of its inaugural Las Vegas Premier Motorcycle auction at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, January 12 – 14. The multi-day sale is expected to present some 400 classic motorcycles, including the historic 1894 Roper Steam Motorcycle, one of the world’s oldest motorcycles.

VETERANS DAY VIETNAM UPDATE–

We’re somewhere near the 56th anniversary of the start of the Viet Nam era.

1964 16,500 Troops
8 March 1965, 3,500 Marines dispatched to South Viet Nam, by December we had 200,000 men on the ground fighting for our lives in a foreign country.
This was the beginning of the U. S. ground war that was overwhelmingly supported by the U. S. citizens in 1961.
*Viet Cong in 1961-1964 had nearly one million soldiers.
WELCOME HOME!
Our United States citizens, including war veterans that we’re in favor of the war, shunned returning military personnel.
U. S. military

THERE YOU HAVE IT–Never a dull moment around the headquarters. We have been working hard since our site was moved to a new web hosting facility over a year ago, and maybe now it’s paying off. Some of our numbers have increase about 30 percent over the last three months. Our web master said recently, “Your site is well within the top 1 percent of all sites in the United States.”
Our reports are showing over 295,000 unique users, 400,000 visits, and 10 million hits a month. That’s what I’m talking about.
So what’s up for this coming week: We have a motorcycle history piece from Paul Garson, a Kendon Trailer upgrade tech, a rare steam powered motorcycle soon to be auctioned. The AFT feature will blow your mind, and we have another Girl of Bikernet feature from Balls.
I also have a bike feature with a girl from Norway, shot by Peter Linney, in Norway. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. I need to ramp up bike building. We will work with Saddlemen on my Mudflap girl seat, and Branch and Bennett’s on Ray’s build. Plus we are working with S&S and Crane on a Evo Hop-up tech in the very near future. Hang on, and take pause tomorrow for Veterans everywhere, even us Navy guys.
