Bill would require VA to report discipline–
Two senators introduced legislation Thursday that would force the Department of Veterans Affairs to report disciplinary actions against medical providers to a national database designed to prevent them from crossing state lines to escape their pasts and keep practicing.
The bill, co-sponsored by Sens. Dean Heller, R-Nev., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., would require the VA to report discipline within 30 days to state medical boards and bar the agency from purging negative records from clinicians’ personnel files as part of severance deals.
The bipartisan measure follows an investigation by USA TODAY that found the VA has concealed poor care and mistakes by its medical workers for years. The agency routinely scrapped firing orders and other records of poor performance in secret settlement agreements with departing clinicians.
Under a nearly 30-year-old policy, the VA reports discipline against only medical doctors and dentists to the national database
— not nurses, podiatrists, physicians’ assistants or other types of practitioners. The agency can take several months, or even years, to report any providers to state boards responsible for regulating licenses and yanking them when necessary.
“The investigation’s findings are downright shameful, and we need action immediately to ensure that the VA does not hide medical mistakes or inadequate care,” said Heller, a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, along with Manchin.
VA Secretary David Shulkin vowed after USA TODAY’s report last month to overhaul agency policies for reporting problem health care providers.

NMA ALERT– Motorist Alert: Find Out If You Are Eligible for a Refund of Florida Rental Car Toll Fees
Motorists who rented a vehicle from Avis, Budget, or Payless in Florida between January 1, 2010 and July 10, 2017 may be eligible for a refund per a settlement reached between the Florida Attorney General’s (AG) office and Avis Budget Group, Inc.
The NMA first complained about the exorbitant administrative fees that the rental car companies were charging customers for toll service, often many multiples of the actual cost of the tolls. The September 2014 NMA letter included a list of over 700 names of members who joined the complaint. Excerpts of some of their comments were shared with the Florida AG’s office.
Attorney General Pam Bondi’s Office investigated and reached a settlement with Avis Budget within the past few months that includes a refund to eligible motorists who were hit with an administrative charge for e-Toll service that wasn’t disclosed beforehand by the rental car companies. The refund is for the first such rental transaction per customer. For more information on eligibility and how to file a claim, which must be done by January 7, 2018, visit this web page. Pass this information along to others who might be eligible.
The allegations against Avis, Budget, and Payless involved insufficient disclosure of a daily fee for e-Toll service, a charge that was over and above the cost of the tolls. The charge was imposed each day of the vehicle rental, regardless of whether the customer used one of Florida’s cashless toll roads.
After the settlement was reached Laura Boeckman, the North Florida Bureau Chief of the Consumer Protection Division of the Florida AG’s office, wrote to the NMA, “We share your concerns you and your organization expressed in your previous correspondence to us and are seeking to ensure that individuals that may have been charged these e-Toll fees by Avis, Budget, or Payless during the above-noted timeframe (January 1, 2010 to July 10, 2017) and without proper disclosure have an opportunity to seek refunds. We therefore ask that you assist us by sharing this information with your members so that as many eligible consumers as possible can apply for refunds before the January 7 deadline.”
The settlement requires Avis Budget Group, Inc. to clearly disclose its $3.95 per day charge to rental car consumers on its websites, online reservation information, reservation confirmation emails and at the rental counter. Avis Budget is also required to now advise customers how to avoid the daily administrative fee. That’s significant progress.

Krawiec’s Fourth Championship is the Ninth Title for the Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Team
Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec locked up his fourth NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship today by qualifying for the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway, giving the team nine of the past 14 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle world championships.
Krawiec will guide his Harley-Davidson® Street Rod competition motorcycle to the starting line for Sunday’s elimination rounds with an insurmountable points lead over his closest rival heading into the last race of the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.
“This championship was won by the entire Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team,” said Krawiec. “We are a group of individuals who are never happy if we are not winning, and we come to work every day with that goal in mind. It’s so hard to win just one Countdown race against this very competitive field, and to win four of five is just amazing. This is a very gratifying championship.”
The Street Rod competition drag bikes are based on the Harley-Davidson Street Rod production motorcycle, an agile middle-weight powered by the liquid-cooled High Output Revolution X 750 engine tuned for maneuvering through traffic and congestion.
Krawiec closed out his title run in style, charging to the top of the qualifying order with a 6.781 elapsed time (ET) in the third round of qualifying on Saturday. Krawiec started the weekend with a 150-point lead in the Pro Stock Motorcycle Countdown standings and with bonus points earned in qualifying holds an unsurmountable 156-point advantage heading into Sunday elimination rounds.
Krawiec scored a big win at the NHRA Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis on Labor Day weekend, and that momentum propelled him into an incredible run in the Countdown playoffs. Krawiec was seeded second for the Countdown and won the opening round at Charlotte on September 17 to take a points lead he would never relinquish as he won four of the five Countdown events leading up to this weekend’s NHRA Finals in Pomona.
“We had a real struggle in the middle of the season trying to get our new motorcycles to work the way we wanted, but I really think that stretch made us better,” said Krawiec. “It caused us to look at every detail of our bikes and our tuning, which ultimately strengthened our program. Everything came together at the right time with the win at Indy.”
Krawiec, who previously won championships in 2008 and in 2011-12, joins five-time champion Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines and six-time winner Dave Schultz as the only racers to claim the title more than three times. Heading into the Pomona elimination rounds, Krawiec is third on the career wins list with 43, trailing Schultz (45) and Hines (47). Krawiec made his NHRA debut in 2004 and joined the Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team in 2007. He has won each of his four championships on Harley-Davidson competition motorcycles.
Harley-Davidson and Vance & Hines Motorsports created the Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team in 2002 to compete in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle division. In 2004 the team was the first to win the NHRA title with a V-Twin-powered motorcycle.

The gentleman picked the lady up, and they headed to the river to his fishing boat and started out on their adventure. They were riding down the river when there was a fork in the river, and the gentleman asked the lady,’Do you want to go up or down?’
All of a sudden the lady stripped off her shirt and pants and made mad passionate love to the man right there in the boat!
When they finished, the man couldn’t believe what had just happened, but he had just experienced the best sex that he’d had in years.

Regarding my story you posted about the right of way violations bill and the ABATE “Storm the Capitol” event, it worked.
As reported in the story, shortly after ABATE’s October 12 Storm, the Assembly took up the measure and voted for passage.
As recently as November 8, word comes that the Wisconsin Senate also voted for passage of the bill and it’s on the way to the governor’s desk for signature. That’s old skool activism in action.
I thought your readers would like to know that raising your voices once in awhile still works when legislators otherwise pretend not to hear.

MAJOR WEEK AHEAD— When the IMS show comes to town it’s always telling about the industry. I watch it grow and slump. I watch trends change and leave the scene.
We always end up involved in some respects. We’ve entered bikes, displayed 5-Ball Racers, had booths and wandered the isles. We always have meetings with vendors and builders and have a party or two.
It’s happening next weekend at the Long Beach Convention Center and this year Chris Callen is involved in a Builder Series with lecturers and demonstrations by builders. Can’t wait to check it out. I should learn something.
Two of the Bikernet broads are slipping under the knife this week for augmentation surgeries. So, during show week we will have two bruised birds crying for attention. Could be interesting.
Then we head right into another adventure. I’m going to peel out to Cuba. I’ll report back or maybe never return. Who the hell knows.
