Hey,
We are scrambling once more to bring you the finest custom motorcycle news on the planet each week. Each week I’m blown away by stuff I learn. For instance, yesterday I rolled to Bennett’s Performance to tear my brand new Evo engine down, for some Branch O’Keefe headwork and an Andrews EV-27 cam installation.
“I noticed the Re-man wording on the box,” Eric said. “Did you see the return address?
The engine was shipped from Viola, Wisconsin, or the S&S factory. Seems S&S is handling assembly for the factory. That was all good news to me. It meant more American hands in my choice of Evo engines. We will bring you the tech and the new Mudflap girl update next week. I’m heading out to Spitfire headquarters tomorrow to pick up our frames and front ends. We’ll be rockin’ over the next couple of weeks.
So, hang on. There’s some startling shit in the news this week:

TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK– I have a 2007 Iron Horse Texas Chopper and im wanting to purchace LAF drag pipes and I dont know what size my exhaust port is . The engine is a s&s 111 do I need 1-3/4 or 2” radius? I thank you for your time .

He could use either one. Our heads will fit a stock header. I will comment that the drag pipes are harder to tune for street riding and the 2″ are the worst. If he is really looking for max power (like he’s actually racing) the 2″ would be my choice. High rpm power is the name of the game. Midrange torque is usually compromised, with is why we don’t recommend them for the street.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER REOPENS–4 Ways to Boost Metabolism
As we age, our metabolisms slow down, which can lead to weight gain. But small dietary adjustments can help minimize unwanted pounds in our middle years. Try these suggestions:
1. Eat small meals throughout the day. This encourages steady caloric burn and a consistent metabolism.
2. Choose healthy carbohydrates. Replace refined, high-glycemic-index carbs with unrefined, low-glycemic choices. The latter do not cause the spikes in blood glucose levels that encourage the storage of fat.
3. Use spices. Capsaicin (the compound that gives chili peppers their bite), black pepper and ginger all boost the generation of heat in the body, leading to more calories burned.
4. Drink green tea. The main antioxidant polyphenol in green tea, known as epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, stimulates the body to help burn calories. Dr. Weil recommends drinking a few cups of quality green tea every day.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY PHILOSOPHY CLASS FOR FORTUNE TELLERS–The Mayonnaise Jar:
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, When 24 hours in a day is not enough; Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and start to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed.
‘Now,’ said the professor, as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things – God, family,
Children, health, friends, and favorite passions things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car…
The sand is everything else —
The small stuff.
‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
So…
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.
There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap.
‘Take care of the golf balls first —
The things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’
One of the students raised her hand
And inquired what the coffee represented.
The professor smiled.
‘I’m glad you asked.’
It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.’
CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL SET TO CRACK DOWN ON ORTEGA HIGHWAY BIKERS– RIVERSIDE — Taking an unsafe turn? You better be prepared to pay up.
The California Highway Patrol is set to launch a crackdown targeting traffic violations by motorcycle riders on the Ortega Highway in Riverside County, the CHP announced Monday.
From April through the end of September, the CHP’s Temecula office will ramp up patrols on a 33-mile stretch of state Route 74 to catch unsafe motorcyclists, according to Officer Ron Thatcher.
A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration “Motorcycle Safety Coalitions” grant will provide the funds necessary for overtime and special operations geared to motorcycle riders, Thatcher said.
CHP data from January 2007 to December 2008 indicate there were 75 motorcycle collisions from where the Ortega Highway begins in San Juan Capistrano to Green Avenue in southwest Riverside County.
Twenty-five of the accidents resulted in injuries, and all were connected to speeding.
“Taking a turn too fast, a motorcyclist is likely to find himself in over his head,” said Capt. Ernie Sanchez, commander of the agency’s Temecula office.
“This stretch of highway demands concentration and caution on the part of the rider,” he said. “With this grant, we’re hoping to not only raise awareness and educate motorcyclists, but ultimately save lives and reduce the number of riders injured every year.”
The Temecula CHP will coordinate with local law enforcement agencies to conduct enforcement operations and advance public awareness efforts, according to Thatcher.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM OPENS NEW EXHIBIT–March, 2011 – – The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the opening of its newest exhibit entitled “The Early Days.” The exhibit occupies a room in the lower level of the museum that was most recently dedicated to motorcycle clubs and colors.
The “Early Days” exhibit focuses on the earliest motorcycles – from what is commonly recognized as the first motorcycle through those machines produced in 1915. “The Early Days Exhibit is designed to show our visitors what those early machines were like, and to tell the story of how it all started,” said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the museum. “In those very early days, there were many different companies that manufactured and sold motorcycles, and this exhibit just gives a taste of what that competition must have been like.”
In addition to exhibiting pre-1916 motorcycles and memorabilia, The Early Days exhibit also tells the much more recent story of the Motorcycle Cannonball. “Just last fall, over 40 motorcycle history enthusiasts participated in an historic ride across the United States,” explains Paige Diers. “These modern day adventurers rode the same early machines you’ll see in the exhibit all the way across the United States and we thought it was fitting to tell their story at the same time as we told the story of the first motorcycles.”
A portion of the funding for “The Early Days” was provided through a grant from Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is located at the corner of Main Street and Junction Avenue in Sturgis, South Dakota. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for anyone 65 and older and children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

NEW FLORIDA TRANSPORTATION BILL SB-608– The bill creates criminal penalties for operators of motor vehicles who commit moving traffic violations that cause serious bodily injury or death to a person riding in or on a motor vehicle or motorcycle.
A person who commits a moving violation that results in the serious bodily injury of a person
riding in or on a motor vehicle or motorcycle is guilty of a second degree misdemeanor. In such
cases, the bill requires the offender to pay a minimum of $500, serve a minimum of 30 days in
jail, attend a driver improvement course, and have his or her driver’s license suspended for a
minimum of 30 days.
A person who commits a moving violation that results in the death of a person riding in or on a
motor vehicle or motorcycle is guilty of a first degree misdemeanor. The bill requires these
offenders to pay a minimum of $1,000, serve a minimum of 90 days in jail, attend an advanced
driver improvement course, and have his or her driver’s license suspended for a minimum of 1
year.
This bill creates section 318.195 of the Florida Statutes.
Having dealt with both legislators and unions for many years I will start off by saying I think they are asking for to much and that will give them a point to negotiate to.
Let’s ask for jail time though we know we are not going to get that and then we settle for the money which is what we are really after.
When talking to legislators I am often asked: What is the financial impact on the state? Okay is the state going to make money from this or is it going to cost us money.
Well this bill is all About Making Money for the State of Florida.
If anyone looks at the bills that Evers and Doc Reichenbach (ABATE of Florida) have been involved in that is exactly what has happened, the State of Florida ended up making a lot of money.
When one of the bills pass ABATE always seems to end up getting some kind of grant.
This looks very suspicious to me.
Increasing the fines are what it is really about. Okay add sending offenders to Driver Improvement also makes money for their supporters and the state gets a piece of that through taxes as well.
Since a vehicle is involved suspending driving is in the scope of things. Pay attention to your driving and Not be in a Crash and or Collision or the state is going to order you to stop operating a vehicle for a period of time. Of course this often leads to more arrests, fines and schools as many continue to drive and do get caught.
This Bill Will Do Nothing To Lower Crashes and Collisions or Save Lives!
AS long as Money Goes To The State and Not The Victim and or Their Families I will be Opposed to This Type Of Legislation.
To prove that I am wrong in thinking this is just about making money I am suggesting that the wording be changed to any fine that is to be imposed the law Must Say The Money Goes To The Victim and or Their Family!
How about adding that the person at fault has to give up 10% of their pay until the injured party and or parties are full compensated and that the money must be taken out of the persons pay Prior To Them Getting It. Any costs involved will also be incurred by the guilty party.
That is the kind of thing that will make people take responsibility for their actions.

HARLEY RIDERS BRING BOOM TO LOCAL TOURISM ECONOMY– PETERSBURG – A statewide biker conference will come to the Tri-Cities this summer, and organizers are hoping for at least $2 million in revenue. The Virginia Harley Owners Group has selected the Petersburg area as the site of its 21st Statewide Rally from June 23 to 25.
“It will be the first time that we’ll hold the event here,” said Rally Coordinator Jo Ann Emmons. “We chose this area because of the excellent room rates and the many attractions, making great riding opportunities,” Emmons said. “The region’s colonial, Civil War, military and motorsport attractions will be a big hit with our members,” she said.
More than 1,000 bikers and supporters attend the Virginia H.O.G. Rally every year, sharing their passion for riding their iconic motor bikes. Organizers expect participants to spend between $2.1 and $2.3 million during the three-day event.
For Petersburg Area Regional Tourism, the rally is a rare opportunity for a big showcase that includes all member jurisdictions: Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell and the counties of Prince George, Dinwiddie and Chesterfield. “This is a real demonstration project,” said Rick Young, president of the board. “Tourism is the largest industry in our area, and this event will help us focus on that,” Young said. Petersburg Area Regional Tourism had organized the bid to host the rally.
Among the locations chosen to host official rally events are Pamplin Historical Park, Old Towne Petersburg and the Virginia Motor Sports Park. There will be organized rides throughout the region, vendor exhibits, motorcycle demonstrations and races.
“We are definitely be prepared to host an event of this size,” said Trey Dotson with the Virginia Motorsports Park. “We have 750 acres and 30,000 seats, which is why we can do pretty much anything that is required,” he said.
Dotson also said that he expects the rally to boost the local economy. “This is going to bring a lot to local tourism,” he said. “We are really excited about having the Harley Owners here,” he said.
To Martha Burton of Petersburg Area Regional Tourism, the event is an opportunity to showcase the region to a large group of visitors at once. “This will have a major impact on the economy and the entire area will benefit,” she said.
Burton said that more than 1,000 hotel rooms in the Tri-Cities are already blocked to accommodate the visitors. “We are absolutely equipped to host an event of this size,” she said.
The Holiday Inn Petersburg North-Fort Lee in Colonial Heights will serve as the host hotel. Surveys of past rallies show that participants spend an average of $256 per day for lodging, meals, entertainment, fuel and shopping.
The average Harley-Davidson owner is between 48 and 56 years old and about 42 percent are women.
Harley-Davidson established the H.O.G. In 1983 in response to a desire by riders for an organized way to share their passion. The Virginia H.O.G. Is one of 1,157 chapters worldwide, totaling more than one million members.

UNCLE MONKEY TO INAUGURATE RIDING SEASON– It is time to roll out the old hog and get her ready for another season of riding. At least that’s what my friends tell me. The Moose Jaw swap meet this last weekend is the beginning of riding season as they say. And though I saw one bike out the week before the three feet of snow blanketing my yard and enclosing my garage tells me that riding season may be a few days away, yet.
But that still doesn’t stop us from venturing out into the cold, snow shovel and ice picks in hand with a determined look on our face to make sure that the overhead door is clear of snow and ice and path drawn out to get us out to the pavement.
We spend our time brushing away the cobwebs, blowing the dust away in anticipation of that one day soon when we will emerge from our cocoon and soar along with the wind. We’re out there; fingers numb fumbling around trying to get our bikes ready. And like those solid blocks of oil waiting on the shelf for some much needed warmth to start flowing again we are waiting for the warm rays of sun to make us mobile again. We stand in the windows of our homes staring out like lost puppies wanting so badly to be outside, running free. Quick trips down tot he hardware store. Short hops to the next town over for a cold beer. Long days in the saddle with the rising and the setting of the sun to signify when the riding is done. Some of us were lucky this winter to slip away to warmer climates with our bikes in tow. Riding on the road keeps the juices flowing but we still pine for the days we can ride in our own hometowns.
As the sun arcs across the sky all that can be said is soon, very soon.

VAGOS MC SUES RIVERSIDE COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT–
The Vagos Motorcycle Club alleges in a lawsuit that Riverside County law enforcement authorities defamed the group and damaged its reputation by falsely linking members to attacks against Hemet police officers.
Statements made by officials, including former Riverside County Dist. Atty. Rod Pacheco and Hemet Police Chief Richard Dana, described the group as “cockroaches” and “terrorists” who “practice an extreme brand of violence,” the lawsuit states.
The comments implicated the Vagos club in the attacks and were made in the wake of Operation Everywhere, a March 2010 law enforcement action targeting 30 alleged members, according to the suit filed Thursday in Riverside County Superior Court.
None of those arrested in connection with the attacks were Vagos members, the lawsuit said.
Pacheco said Friday he had not seen the lawsuit, but he brushed aside the allegations leveled against him and others. He called the Vagos club one of the most “intimidating street gangs in California.”
“I don’t know if they are trying to say they are some of kind of social club or something, but that’s not the case,” said Pacheco, who now for works for a law firm in Los Angeles. “This appears to be just another intimidation tactic by a gang, a criminal street gang.”
In an interview with The Times on the day of the arrests, Pacheco said the operation was “just the beginning” of continued law enforcement actions against the club.
“They represent an extreme threat to law enforcement,” Pacheco said at the time. “The goal is to eliminate this threat.”
The operation came amid intense efforts to identify suspects in the attacks, which included diverting a natural gas line into the offices of the Hemet-San Jacinto Valley Gang Task Force, torching four Hemet code-enforcement trucks and setting up a zip-gun booby trap that fired a bullet at an officer when he opened a security gate.
Two Riverside County men were arrested last July in connection with seven attacks against Hemet police.
Beverly Hills attorney Joseph Yanny, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Vagos, said the men arrested have no connection to the group. He accused Pacheco of blaming the Vagos to help bolster his failed reelection bid. He was voted out of office in June.
“My guys have been improperly painted for long enough and hard enough for something they had nothing to do with that it’s time to put an end to this by whatever means necessary,” Yanny told The Times. “I truly believe [law enforcement officials] knew the people who were engaging in actions against the Hemet Police Department were not the Vagos.”
Dana was not available for comment. Officials with the district attorney’s office declined to comment.

BROTHER BUILDER LOOKING FOR A MAGAZOON FEATURE– As an avid reader of your magazine, I felt compelled to write you about the custom bike I came across in Suffolk, VA. Not only do I feel it’s worthy of publishing in your magazine, but this bike could easily be a cover or featured article.
I met Mike “Dawg” Bradley recently via mutual friends at our local hangout. He’s a junk man by pedigree as his father was before him. He described a project that he had been envisioning in his sleep and that it was going to be a personal challenge for him to complete in “30 days”. Building bikes and cars has been a passion for him his entire life, but given the timeframe and the fact he was starting with “zero”….this was a daunting task. Mike disappeared for nearly a month and when I started getting photos of his progress, I was amazed….
Mike’s so called “Barter Bike” was quickly taking shape. He initially traded a 2001 Chevy truck bed for the custom wheels and tires, a jet ski for the frame, a 1993 mustang for the motor/trans & tins and finally sold a rigid bike frame to complete the build. What Mike created in his backyard garage was incredible as you will see from the photos. He personally designed, built and painted this beauty himself….no credit cards here. Mike has $1100 invested in this bike that is conservatively valued at 30k.
As I’m sure you will attest from the photos included, this bike is worthy and deserves a feature spot for every builder and fan of custom bikes to see. I recently convinced “Dawg” into allowing me to take a few photos and get them to you. He’s a very talented yet humble bike builder that certainly fits the image that your publication tries to promote. I urge you to contact Mike for more information regarding this bike and strongly suggest pursuing him as a highlight in your publication. You won’t be disappointed.

PM President Named Motorcycle Industry Leader of the Year–La Palma, CA – The annual V-Twin Motorcycle Expo, recently held in Cincinnati, OH, is the largest Harley-Davidson related motorcycle dealer trade show of the year. The “Industry Leader of the Year” award is given to the person at the company that shows an unequaled vision, strategy and a dynamic business sense during the past year. Orange County executive, Mark Finnie, President of Performance Machine, was recently named the “2011 Industry Leader of the Year” during the Excellence in Motorcycling Awards ceremony held at the V-Twin Expo. Finnie will tell you it is a team effort that wins awards and gives credit to his employees.
Finnie has a degree in engineering and was hired to lead Performance Machine nearly three years ago. Finnie accepted the PM presidency during an economic downturn, which may have intimidated some, but not Mark…he was up for the challenge. Mark set his sights on new business development and successfully launched the first forged wheel program for the trike (3-wheeled motorcycle) market and is currently ready to launch a new forged wheel program for the off-road truck and Jeep markets. This will be the first venture for Performance Machine outside the motorcycle market. Finnie stated, “Diversifying our interests ensures that we can continue to grow while the economy takes its toll on the motorcycle market as well as other markets”.
Performance Machine, a world-leading manufacturer of forged wheels, brakes, controls and accessories just celebrated its 40th anniversary and currently operates out of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility complete with testing lab in the city of La Palma.
PM products are pieces of art that help riders create a one-of-a kind ride. All PM products are designed to help riders create a cohesive, custom look with timeless beauty that lasts forever…That’s why world-class bike builders have been using PM products for years!
CRAZY SHIT– I’m doing tremendous, albeit harried, research for my 1% er book about the history of motorcycling and major impacts in our society from WWII into the 70s. It’s incredible. Some folks felt that biker movies fired up the biker/outlaw movement, but actually bikers were acting crazy and building choppers ten years before Hollywood made the Wild One with Marlon Brando. Hell, bikers pushed the bounds of freedom two decades before hippies rolled their first joint. I’m trying to investigate the question, why?
You’ll have to read the book to find out what I found. Every page of this book will blow your mind, and it’s all the truth. Makes me wonder, What the fuck?
But the bottom line is simple: Anything is possible, and never, ever give up on what you believe in. I watch kids who don’t seem to have any drive for anything except a joint, a cheap beer and a video game.
There’s a big old world out there and you need to pack as much into life as possible.
You just never know what might happen next.
Okay, next week we will publish the next mudflap girl update and we have some new Kevin Thomas book reviews for you to ponder. Rogue sent me a recently published law enforcement guide book, all about motorcycles. I may publish the entire thing, so you can see what the feds tell local cops about you and your motorcycle. Remember the late Randy Smith, the master designer from Custom Cycle Engineering. We plan to nominate him for the Sturgis Hall of Fame next year. Feel free to drop the Museum a note, if you want to support the effort.
I also need to update the HORSE Brass Balls Sweeps stakes build on Bikernet. I’ll put that on the list for next week. Hang on.
Ride Forever,
