Oh no,
It’s a deja vu. Ray C. Wheeler, the Bikernet Performance editor peeled toward the Salt Flats for the Cook’s Shootout this morning at the crack of dawn. He straddled the Salt Shaker and cut a dusty trail with Bikernet stickers and our Bonneville books in tow. About an hour out on the hot shot running 120-inch World’s Fastest Panhead (at one time), the ignition gave out and he’s stuck alongside the road.

I’ve got to jump in his truck and rescue our esteemed editor, but I’ll be back to finish the Sunday Post. As it turns out, a officer from the California Highway Patrol pulled up and started to question Ray, then noticed the graphic on the side of the tank.
“This is the Salt Shaker,” the officer said.
“Yeah, from Bikernet,” Ray said.

“I know, I know. I go to Bikernet all the time,” the officers said and ran Ray’s numbers to make sure he didn’t steal the hot rod. Let’s hit the news so I can jump back into the shop and work on the Mudflap Girl bike. I’m getting so damn close. If I finish up the kickstand, and mount the ignition, I’ll be ready for Wire Plus.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY LIFE Lessons–An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, ‘Can I also sit like you and do nothing?’
The eagle answered: ‘Sure, why not.’
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.
Moral of the story:
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

THE MOTORBOOKS CONTROVERSY OVER 1%ER–There’s an ongoing debate within the Motorbooks Editorial offices. The editors took it upon themselves to change the spelling of 1%er to One-Percenter. I disputed this decision with my editor Darwin Holmstrom, and with Zack the publisher, to no avail. This decision making process rubbed off on my recent book with Motorbooks, “Terry the Tramp,” which should be available in books stores now.
It is also available on Amazon currently. I felt the 1%er was an iconic historic brand and should be recognized, but the editor’s would rather follow the Chicago style manual, and not let their readers feel the true spirit of the 1%er. If you agree with me buy the book, then write the publisher. It’s bullshit, I tell ya.

TEA Extension FROM THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION–The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned that, with current authorizations set to expire in the next couple of weeks, the U.S. Congress passed legislation that would authorize surface transportation programs for several more months.
By voice vote, the House passed a bill (HR 2887) that would extend surface transportation programs through March 31, 2012. The bill also would extend certain highway-related taxes, including the gas tax, which is set to expire on September 30 under the most recent long-term surface transportation reauthorization. The Senate also passed the extension late on Thursday, September 15. This bill has been the vehicle for numerous motorcycle-related laws. HR 2887 is expected to be signed into law very soon.
“The extension keeps the current motorcycle awareness and education grants flowing. So far the government has returned $49 million dollars to the motorcycle riders in the country; I call that a good start,” said Jeff Hennie, MRF Vice President of Government Relations.
The bill, which should be the most bipartisan bill in the entire Congress, has been stymied for a number of legislative and political reasons, so much so that it is now linked to the Federal Aviation Administration funding bill which is on its 22nd extension going back to 2007.
House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica (R-FL) said the short extension represented a “bipartisan, bicameral agreement to move forward,” but warned that it should not be a “temporary Band-Aid.”

OUTLAW BIKER RANKS GROWING IN ALBERTA– Outlaw biker ranks growing in Alberta–EDMONTON – Seven years ago, Shannon Trottier was left with a gaping hole in her life when she watched her 34-year-old son die in her arms.
Joey Campbell, also known as Joey Morin, was rushed to hospital after he was sprayed with bullets outside a west-end strip club, but his injuries were too severe to overcome. A second man, Robert Simpson, died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
Both men were affiliated with outlaw motorcycle gangs — at that time the Bandidos — and the killer has yet to be brought to justice.
The shooting marks the last time any significant violence among bikers erupted on city streets and police are holding their breath it will stay that way given the province’s changing biker club scene.
According to Sgt. Marc Labonte of the Edmonton Integrated Intelligence Unit for the RCMP, during the last two years, Alberta has seen one of the largest increases in outlaw motorcycle gangs across the country.
Labonte wouldn’t name the specific clubs that have set up shop in the province, but he said there are now four main clubs referred to as “one-percenters” — a term given to outlaw motorcycle clubs that aren’t always just out for a good time — as opposed to one main group with four chapters.
Two new one-percenters showed up in the last year, and each one has one to three chapters.
In addition, police have identified at least eight “puppet ” clubs or associate clubs, which consists of members aspiring to become part of the main clubs, so they conduct certain business to prove themselves worthy. In early 2009, Labonte said there were maybe two or three associate clubs in the province.
The bikers are also spreading their wings.
Two or three years ago, Labonte said the one-percenters were limited to Edmonton and Calgary, but they have since spread to cities throughout the province, and it’s largely attributed to the booming economy.
“The economy was good, so there was money. Where there’s money, there is always a criminality,” said Labonte.
Police are closely keeping tabs on the most recent outlaw motorcycle clubs to arrive in the province.
But Labonte isn’t expecting an all-out turf war to erupt any time soon — like the one going on between the Hells Angels and Rock Machine in Winnipeg, which experienced a series of firebombings and shootings, including one that put a 14-year-old boy in hospital with gunshot wounds.
In the past, some of the biker gangs in Alberta have been responsible for homicides, home invasions, drugs, prostitution, money laundering and extortion.
Labonte said there has been an increase in criminality among the clubs in recent years — the most notable were home invasions where “somebody didn’t pay up.”
But often crimes such as those go undetected, making it difficult for law enforcement to get involved.
“The victim, who’s a criminal usually, will not report it to police because they know what these guys can do,” said Labonte, who noted biker gangs try to keep violence from spilling onto the street.
“They don’t want to make a big scene. They will be very low profile because they don’t want the public against them. They are like a business. They don’t want to be known as bad guys.”
Although police aren’t concerned there will be an all-out turf war in Alberta, Mounties are cognizant things could change since many of the clubs are connected regionally and nationally.
In 2004, Criminal Intelligence Service Canada listed the Hells Angels as the largest and most powerful outlaw motorcycle gang in Canada, with approximately 500 members belonging to 34 chapters across the country, in which at least three were in Alberta. The following year, the director of the Criminal Intelligence Service of Alberta told the Sun that the Hells Angels wouldn’t allow any competitors to set up shop in Alberta.
But police believe the momentum has changed since then.
Labonte noted there are about five or six one-percenters in the U.S.
Alberta now has four of them — and they seem to be talking to and negotiating with each other.
Police have heard of instances where one group has stolen another group’s patch, which sends a message they are not allowed to be here.
So far the bikers seem to be using the gesture as a way to start talking to one another and lay grounds for respect, said Labonte. Whether those talks are peaceful remains to be seen.
MEMBER SAYS NOT ALL BIKER CLUBS ARE BAD
He’s a Warlock, and he’s proud of it.
Sporting a shaved head and goatee, arms filled with tattoos, a wristband with spikes and a black leather vest with the club’s patches, he looks the part of a tough biker you don’t want to have on your bad side.
But the biker, who did not want to reveal his true identity, is trying to shed the stereotypes associated with being part of a motorcycle club and insists it’s about the brotherhood more than anything else.
“We’re not a gang, we’re a motorcycle club. We are not criminals. You can’t be a Warlock if you’re a criminal,” said the biker. “It’s like any organization. Yes, we have our bad apples, everybody does. But we take steps to ensure that you are thrown out or stripped of your patch. Not everybody is bad.”
The Warlocks have been on police radar since at least 2005, but didn’t officially establish their first Canadian chapter until last November.
The club is known as a “one-percenter” with roots that trace back to the U.S., particularly Pennsylvania and Orlando, and with chapters in Germany and England.
The Alberta chapter is the first and only Canadian chapter thus far. The club’s website states “the Warlocks motorcycle club is a strong brotherhood of serious motorcycle riders and is not for everyone. We are not a social weekend riding club, we are a brotherhood of bikers that take riding and flying our colours very serious.”
Although the biker is pleased the Warlocks are now established in Canada, he said existing motorcycle clubs have not all been receptive to their arrival.
“We have no problems with nobody,” he said. “We told them that we were here, we’re not involved in anything, we’re not doing anything.”
According to the biker, members of the club get together to ride and to raise money for charity. He spends his days working in construction and does volunteer community service during some of his off hours.
The biker said he’s always been part of the motorcycle club community. When he retired from the military, he missed the friendship and camaraderie, so he sought out others who had like interests and he found a brotherhood in the Warlocks.
His most prized possession, of course, is his Harley. And there’s no greater feeling than riding down the highway on his “baby” with his buddies at his side, he added.
“When you ride you feel free. There are no worries. Just the wind in your face, everything is great,” said the biker.
“It’s a sense of belonging. It’s a network of brothers that will do anything for you and it’s a nice feeling. You know that no matter what, no matter where, there’s a brother there.

BONNEVILLE 2011 COOK’S SHOOT OUT — Forecast for the next 5 or 6 days in the Wendover, Utah area is SUNNY and FAST with a lifetime memories by the second, the minute and the mile.
Rollin 685 miles each way on the Keith Ball, Bikernet built, record holding World’s Fastest Panhead.
We spent the better part of the day installing a fresh Spyke charging system, behind closed doors at the intergalactic shop, tied the battery down, sprayed on a little chain lube then made a slight chain adjustment.
We checked the charging system for leaks, not a one, we’re rollin to Wendover, Ut. just after first light Sunday morning.
We also installed a Spyke starter fix that works like a charm, ya just push the compression releases in, bump the starter button and WHAM! your golden!
The hot rod Pan purred like a kitten on steroids when the button made contact, clicked the hot rod into low gear and idled to the 110 N then rolled to the 405 S past a few miles of oil rigs headed into Long Beach with a visit to the amazing Dr. Willie and Jim, retired Navy Veteran. The good Dr. performed a minor add-a-Krankvent-to-me for proper breathing.
Will report from the road, we installed Krankvents on my 124″ Twin Cam that ran perfectly for over 75,000 miles.
While your curled up in the comfort of your pillow top bed with a few hot sweethearts on your mind, your Bikernet Performance Editor will be smilin and rollin Eastward, destination Bonneville Salt Flats seeking the truth and nothing the truth but for your viewing and reading enjoyment. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it.
We expect to see Leslie Porterfield make a record pass or two, plus 3 or 4 more sit on rockets in the field.
The 2 wheel headliner is Rocky Robinson in the Ack looking for a 400 mph pass.

More reports and images from the salt.

As you know the Salt Shaker broke down. It’s something to do with the ignition system. I picked up Ray, brought him back to the shop, where we unloaded the bike. Then Ray regrouped, repacked into his new little Ford Ranger pickup, drank a protein shake by the lovely Nyla, and cut a dusty trail for the Salt Flats.–Bandit

EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK WRITES OFF MOTORCYCLISTS ONCE AGAIN–The European Union kicked off today the “EU Mobility Week 2011: Alternative Mobility” which will see hundreds of towns and cities participate in activities promoting sustainable mobility, without mentioning motorcycling.
One of the main objectives is to “encourage the use of alternative forms of transport and travel other than private cars”, inciting citizens to resort to cycling, walking or using public transport, in order to “break the stranglehold of private cars in urban transport.” Nowhere are motorcycles and scooters mentioned, even though they are used every day by dozens of millions of Europeans for work or commuting trips.
The Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) regrets that this event, which could have been a great opportunity to introduce citizens to the benefits of two-wheeled mobility of all types, is instead prisoner of an ideology that focuses on three transport modes that cannot alone answer the public’s demand for personal mobility and ignores the benefits of motorcycles.
A growing proportion of motorcyclists in the transport mix can help reduce congestion, pollution and demand for parking space, improving the urban environment and the general quality of life not just for motorcycle users, but for all citizens. These advantages will be enhanced with the new generation of electric and alternatively-powered two-wheelers, many of which are already available on the market.
FEMA already showed its support to alternative mobility by taking part in Clean Week 2020, chairing its eBike of the Year contest for the promotion of green motorcycles.
Now FEMA is taking action by contributing to the SMART2WHEELS event, held on September 22nd in Brussels, and part of the EU Mobility Week. Promoting cycling and electric two-wheelers and their potential to improve the environment in European cities, it includes an exhibition of innovative vehicles and a debate with Members of the European Parliament and local and national authorities on policy and business obstacles to the evolution of electric bikes.
In doing so, FEMA wants to help steer the future of the Mobility Week toward real solutions involving all available options, including the scooters, motorcycles and electric cycles of today and tomorrow.

BIKERNET INSURANCE NOTE FOR SUNDAY POST– Cantina Members: Don’t Leave Home Without Good Travel Insurance.
Hey, we know how hard you all work for your money and we also know the economy has been a real bumpy road for some of you†over the past several years. We try to†help out by making sure you always get great value for your hard-earned dollar when you buy from us. Whether it be one of Bandit’s books, a Bikernet Headwrap, or just good insurance products from Bikernet Insurance, we go all out for you all the time. Let’s look at travel insurance for example.
Here are five great reasons to make sure you never leave home without travel insurance from Bikernet.
1. Non-refundable Tickets or Non-refundable Deposits Some vacation companies make you put down significant deposits to lock in your pricing and reservations. Often, these deposits are non-refundable. In some cases, trips or vacations are cancelled through no fault of your own. Here too, you could be out of luck and be forced to eat the cost of non-refundable tickets. Solution: With good travel insurance you can recover the non-refundable†trip costs.
2. Medical and Health Care Insurance Not Covered Abroad. Be aware that most medical plans designed for the U.S. medical patient either do not cover international risks or severely limit coverage on emergency-related medical care services overseas. Know the limitations of your current health insurance plans when you leave the country. Better yet, buy comprehensive travel insurance policies to cover your medical services and expenses†should you required hospitalization abroad. It’s really a very cheap solution given all the coverage you can get.
3. Complicated Travel Plans and Schedule.
The more countries you visit, the more flights you will be taking, the more cars you rent, the more travel trouble you could encounter. Why take the chance? For a few dollars, good travel insurance can be used to reimburse unused, non-refundable trip costs. Miss a cruise departure because of a cancelled flight? Good travel insurance may cover the cost of sending you to the next port-of-call to meet up with your cruise line.
4. Passport is Lost or Missing
Nothing worse than getting stranded in a strange country without your travel documents. Good travel insurance provides 24/7 help lines with knowledgeable staff to assist you. They speak almost any language known to mankind so no matter where you are, they can help get replacement documents faster than you could ever get them on your own.
5. The No-Hassle Experience = Peace of Mind
Let’s face it folks. We love insurance so that you don’t have to.† It’s our way of bringing you “peace of mind” in what is for many, a turbulent world. We want you to enjoy your travel experiences without worrying about the “risks” involved. Bikernet’s Travel Insurance through Travel Guard, is designed with your enjoyment in mind.

SONS OF ANARCHY FEATURES NEW H-D COMMERCIAL SPOT--If you watched the season 4 premier of the Sons of Anarchy, you saw a brand new commercial from Harley-Davidson with the theme “No Cages,” which featured a Biker attaching leashes to a group of cages and breaking the dogs out as he pulls away on his new, more powerful 2012 Harley. It was called “Liberation,” and not only was it entertaining, but we’re told it involved a new trend called “Crowd Sourcing.”
According to experts Victors Spoils, the ideas were sent in online (from riders like you) the best ones were selected, and the creator of this one, Benjamin Swan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was compensated. Swan is a 30-year-old filmmaker and visual content creator. Mark-Hans Richer, Harley-Davidson’s Chief Marketing Officer, said, “We are uniquely able to use crowd sourcing for all of our major creativity because of the passion and advocacy of a broad customer base all over the world. This process has helped to liberate the creativity of our most passionate of fans.”
This follows a trend that may have started last year with the Superbowl – amateur filmmakers sent in their work to Doritos, and the winner, the one where a pug crashes through a patio door on top of the man who is taunting him with a chip, reportedly received a million dollar prize and was voted by viewers as the best one during the game. Also recently, the “Most Interesting Man in the World” commercial featured attributes like “If he said it’s not you, its him, he’d be lying” which were gleaned from some of the many suggestions sent in by fans of the commercial spots.
With the growth of social media sites, and no shortage of people voicing their opinions, this trend is likely to continue. But for it to work, you’ll have to have a passionate following of fans who will literally tell you how to speak to them and their needs.
See ya’ out there!

BIKERNET BLONDE FILES ARE NOW OPEN–Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn’t paid for them.
Hellloooo,……….. just because I’m blonde doesn’t mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves!
Helllooooo? It’s been a year! I told him. There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot!

One who celebrates the Bacchanalia, or indulges in drunken revels, is a bacchanal BAK-uh-nuhl; bak-uh-NAL, which is also another term for a drunken or riotous celebration.

Re: Stabbing on 6th Street, June 13th, 2011 during the ROT Rally
I am writing this letter to you to express my concern regarding the stabbing and shooting incident that took place in your jurisdiction during the ROT Rally this past June. As a concerned citizen and motorcycle enthusiast I’m finding it difficult to understand how somebody can unlawfully discharge a firearm inside an establishment where they are expressly prohibited and as of yet there are no charges filed against the individual involved. To make matters worse it Is my understanding that this particular individual then proceeded to stab an individual when the melee moved outside the establishment inflicting some very serious injuries to the victim and yet no charges have been filed.
I also realize that investigations of this magnitude take some time to complete. It is also my understanding that the Austin Police Department Special Investigations Unit has completed their investigation as of this writing and have forwarded the results of that investigation to your office. I must say as an upstanding citizen and taxpayer it would be a Travesty for the perpetrators in this case to be given preferential treatment due to their close association with the Law Enforcement community.
My understanding of the Justice system tells me there should be equal justice and uniform enforcement of the law in all cases regardless of your particular views regarding the perpetrators and/or victims in this matter, particularly in light of recent events involving the Law Enforcement community in the Travis County area. I am asking, details that I may be unaware of not withstanding in this particular case, that this case be brought before the Grand Jury and let the good citizens of Travis County determine the outcome and the way forward from our present position. Surely your Department and the citizens of Travis County deserve no less.
In this case it appears that laws have been violated and both the victims and perpetrators deserve their day in court so a jury can decide the outcome regarding this incident. As a concerned citizen I am demanding that justice be served so that your Department can put this issue to rest.
Please cut and paste the above into an e-mail and type in your name at the bottom of the letter. For the unit Commanders outside of the Austin region I would appreciate it if you would Draft a letter of opinion regarding this matter. The focus of the letter of opinion should be that the motorcycle riding community outside of the Austin area spends a significant amount of time and money visiting the Austin area and supporting the local businesses in the area. Due to the above situation we don’t know if it is prudent to spend our time and vacation dollars in Austin as there is some appearance that safety may be an issue with folks visiting from out of town.

The Man and the Monastery– A man is driving down the road and breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, “My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?”
The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears a strange sound. The next morning, he asks the monks what the sound was, but they say, “We can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.”
The man is disappointed but thanks them anyway and goes about his merry way.
Some years later, the same man breaks down in front of the same monastery. The monks again accept him, feed him, even fix his car. That night, he hears the same strange noise that he had heard years earlier.
The next morning, he asks what it is, but the monks reply, “We can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.”
The man says, “All right, all right. I’m dying to know. If the only way I can find out what that sound was is to become a monk, how do I become a monk?”
The monks reply, “You must travel the earth and tell us how many blades of grass there are and the exact number of sand pebbles. When you find these numbers, you will become a monk.”
The man sets about his task. Forty-five years later, he returns and knocks on the door of the monastery. He says, “I have traveled the earth and have found what you have asked for. There are 145,236,284,232 blades of grass and 231,281,219,999,129,382 sand pebbles on the earth.”
The monks reply, “Congratulations. You are now a monk. We shall now show you the way to the sound.”
The monks lead the man to a wooden door, where the head monk says, “The sound is right behind that door.”
The man reaches for the knob, but the door is locked.
He says, “Real funny. May I have the key?”
The monks give him the key, and he opens the door. Behind the wooden door is another door made of stone. The man demands the key to the stone door. The monks give him the key, and he opens it, only to find a door made of ruby.
He demands another key from the monks, who provide it. Behind that door is another door, this one made of sapphire. So it went until the man had gone through doors of emerald, silver, topaz, amethyst.
Finally, the monks say, “This is the last key to the last door.”
The man is relieved to no end. He unlocks the door, turns the knob, and behind that door he is amazed to find the source of that strange sound.
But I can’t tell you what it is because you’re not a monk.

WORLD’S FASTEST PANHEAD DISPUTE– These good folks who say they have the worlds fastest panhead are sadly mistaken. I have held the records at Bonneville and El Mirage for 13 years now. Mine is a true panhead in pre ’55 cases and heads, unlike these other folks faux “Panheads”.
See July 2002 issue of Iron Works or look at the Bonneville records for A/VG 2000 cc. I admire their great work, but they are wrong assumptions.

Congratulations Larry, send me your speeds and an image of your hot rod Panhead. I’ll be glad to give up the bragging rights to the true World’s Fastest Panhead.–Bandit

S&S SPECIALS FOR SEPTEMBER, SAVE ON A V111 ENGINE!– During the month of September, S&S is offering a special deal on our popular natural finished V111 engines. If you are considering the upgrade to a big inch engine or if you are thinking of building a custom bike, now is the time to buy. You’ll never get a better price! We’ll even throw in a kid’s S&S ringer t-shirt! (style and color may vary).
IT’S HIP TO BE SQUARE!
The S&S V111 is a “square” engine designed for torque more than top end horsepower. The short 4 1/8″ stroke is equal to the large 4 1/8″ bore, which minimizes vibration. The 585 lift S&S® cam and the single coil Sidewinder® valve springs minimize valve train noise. A smooth, quiet, torquey engine is ideal for touring applications where vibration and noise can get old on a long ride and a loaded bagger pulling a trailer can overtax a stock engine.
This is the same engine we offer in our catalog. It’s not a stripped down version. The price may be lower, but not that legendary S&S quality!

INCREDIBLE–It’s almost 3:00 on a Sunday. I’m clamoring to stumble back into the shop and dig in to my Mudflap Girl bike. It’s so close. Seems there is one more delicate piece of fabrication I need to grapple with.
I’m going to hit a local swapmeet in the morning then try to wrap up a tech with Eric Bennett, at Bennett’s Performance, then scramble back to the headquarters and knock out some articles. Damn, it’s another beautiful day in paradise, and I could be out riding my Shovelhead. But there incomplete bikes on lifts are daunting, especially when two for Bonneville 2012 are headed our way.

But don’t fret, I tell my self. I’m enjoying the hell out of building this FXR. I’m always trying to build the bike that’s perfect for me, the bike I will ride until the sun don’t shine. This one feels like the one, in so many respects. It’s tight and strong.
But I’ll cover the details in the next report. It’s time to cut a dusty trail.
Ride Forever,
–Bandit
