TOUGH AS NAILS THURSDAY NEWS–

Coleenlead

Hey,

I’m stuck in Bikernet Solitary Confinement. The girls hatched a plan to escape to Palm Springs and lay by a pool for several blistering days.

“Any day but Thursday,” I hollered in a board meeting.

Sin Wu sneered at me, stroked Coral’s soft creamy-white leg and said, “Okay, we’ll leave Wednesday.”

What the hell. I’m just one man? Wait, there’s the Code of the West that governs everything. “No Snivelin’,” is right at the top of the list. This is going to be a helluva news, albeit scattered with typos and mistakes.

One comment before I head into the Bikernet Content Library. A travel writer said to me recently, “Didn’t think anyone would be interested in what I was thinking during a ride?”

I pointed out the contrary, then I ran across this in the latest issue of Smithsonian magazine. They were concerned that all the roads had been covered, so travel journalist were out of assignments unless they blasted to the moon. Jan Morris made the follow observation:

Ah, but what they feel like is something else, and in a profounder sense the best travel writers are not really writing about travel at all. They are recording the effects of places or movements upon their own particular temperaments–recording the experience rather than the event, as they might make literary use of a love affair, an enigma or a tragedy.

With that let’s hit the news:

Badcops

ROGUE, REAL BAD COPS REPORT, Fire chief shot by cop in Ark. court over tickets–JERICHO, Ark. ? It was just too much, having to return to court twice on the same day to contest yet another traffic ticket, and Fire Chief Don Payne didn’t hesitate to tell the judge what he thought of the police and their speed traps.

The response from cops? They shot him. Right there in court.

Payne ended up in the hospital, but his shooting last week brought to a boil simmering tensions between residents of this tiny former cotton city and their police force. Drivers quickly learn to slow to a crawl along the gravel roads and the two-lane highway that run through Jericho, but they say sometimes that isn’t enough to fend off the city ticketing machine.

“You can’t even get them to answer a call because normally they’re writing tickets,” said Thomas Martin, chief investigator for the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department. “They’re not providing a service to the citizens.”

Now the police chief has disbanded his force “until things calm down,” a judge has voided all outstanding police-issued citations and sheriff’s deputies are asking where all the money from the tickets went. With 174 residents, the city can keep seven police officers on its rolls but missed payments on police and fire department vehicles and saw its last business close its doors a few weeks ago.

“You can’t even buy a loaf of bread, but we’ve got seven police officers,” said former resident Larry Harris, who left town because he said the police harassment became unbearable.

Sheriff’s deputies patrolled Jericho until the 1990s, when the city received grant money to start its own police force, Martin said.

Police often camped out in the department’s two cruisers along the highway that runs through town, waiting for drivers who failed to slow down when they reached the 45 mph zone ringing Jericho. Residents say the ticketing got out of hand.

“When I first moved out here, they wrote me a ticket for going 58 mph in my driveway,” 75-year-old retiree Albert Beebe said.

The frequent ticketing apparently led to the vandalization of the cruisers, and the department took to parking the cars overnight at the sheriff’s department eight miles away.

It was anger over traffic tickets that brought Payne to city hall last week, said his lawyer, Randy Fishman. After Payne failed to get a traffic ticket dismissed on Aug. 27, police gave Payne or his son another ticket that day. Payne, 39, returned to court to vent his anger to Judge Tonya Alexander, Fishman said.

It’s unclear exactly what happened next, but Martin said an argument between Payne and the seven police officers who attended the hearing apparently escalated to a scuffle, ending when an officer shot Payne from behind.

Doctors in Memphis, Tenn., removed a .40-caliber bullet from Payne’s hip bone, Martin said. Another officer suffered a grazing wound to his finger from the bullet.

Martin declined to name the officer who shot Payne. It’s unclear if the officer has been disciplined.

Prosecutor Lindsey Fairley said Thursday that he didn’t plan to file any felony charges against the officer or Payne. Fairley, reached at his home, said Payne could face a misdemeanor charge stemming from the scuffle, but that would be up to the city’s judge. He said he didn’t remember the name of the officer who fired the shot.

Payne remains in good condition at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis. He referred questions to his lawyer.

“I know that he was unarmed and I know he was shot,” Fishman said. “None of that sounds too good for the city to me.”

After the shooting, Martin said police chief Willie Frazier told the sheriff’s department he was disbanding the police force “until things calm down.” The sheriff’s department has been patrolling the town in the meantime.

Alexander, who works as a lawyer in West Memphis, resigned as Jericho’s judge in the aftermath of the shooting, Fairley said. She did not return calls for comment.

STATE LINE IS IN TROUBLE, BIKERNET TO THE RESCUE– The Terrible Herbst family bought the entire Primm Nevada concrete footprint a couple of years ago, behind unrelenting success with gambling outlets in their gas stations. Then fate hit with a law restricting gas station gambling, followed by the our economic downturn. Their State Line casinos Whiskey Pete’s, Buffalo Bills and the Primm Valley Resort were hit hard.

State line is a blue collar Oasis run by a couple of bikers. For years it struggled to make a dent in the Vegas market, until recently. Vegas has become so large and congested, the bros went looking for somewhere else to go, away from Los Angeles, San Diego or even Bay Area traffic. Primm is the place and more and more riders escape, even Las Vegas, to hang out by the pools in Primm, where there’s no congestion, or crowds, just babes, good food and entertainment.

We sent Jon Towle, who is currently road testing a 2010 Road King, into the desert, just over 200 miles from downtown LA, to check out the action 50 miles south of Vegas. We’ll bring you a complete report in a couple of weeks. He still owes me the 2010 lowboy Sportster Road Test.

EXCLUSIVE BIKERNET INVESTIGATION, HOW RUBBER GLOVES ARE MADE–Next time you use a pair of rubber gloves, You’re going to smile when you think of this:

A dentist noticed that his next patient, a little Old Lady, was Nervous so he decided to tell her a little joke as he put on his Gloves.

‘Do you know how they make these gloves?’ he asked.

‘No, I don’t,’ she replied.

‘Well,’ he spoofed, ‘there’s a building in Canada with a big tank of latex and workers of all hand sizes walk up to the tank, dip in their hands, let them dry, then peel off the gloves and throw them into boxes of the right size.’

She didn’t crack a smile.

‘Oh, well. I tried,’ he thought.

But five minutes later, during a delicate portion of the procedure, she burst out laughing.

‘What’s so funny?’ he asked

‘I was just envisioning how condoms are made!’

Gotta watch those little Old Ladies!

Saddlemen Gel Pads Trek The Himalayas Challenging the Roads of the ?Roof of the World?–Recently, a friend of Saddlemen, Joe Bonnello, was one of a group of five trail riders braving the highest roads in the world, in the northwestern Himalaya mountains, on Indian-made Royal Enfield motorcycles. Joe made sure to take along a Saddlemen Gel Pad when challenging these largely unpaved roads. ?I thank you from the bottom of my ass. Without the gels, I would not have survived,? said Bonnello. ?The shocks on those Enfields are simply non-existent!?

The group conquered the highest road on Earth, the Khardungla Pass, listed at nearly 18,400 feet above sea level! Located in the northern-most province of India, Jammu and Kashmir, this area borders both Pakistan and China, and is only about 500 miles straight east from Kabul, Afghanistan!

RUSTYPARTYFLYER

PHONES IN CHURCH–A man in Topeka , Kansas decided to write a book about churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco and started working east from there. Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making notes.

He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign, which read “Calls: $10,000 a minute.”

Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to GOD.

The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way. As he continued to visit churches in Seattle , Phoenix , Salt Lake City , Denver , Oklahoma City, and around the United States , he found more phones, with the same sign, and the same answer from each pastor.

Finally, he arrived in Texas , upon entering a church in Peaster, Texas , behold – he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read “Calls: 35 cents.”

Fascinated, he asked to talk to t he pastor, “Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to GOD, but in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads only 35 cents a call. Why?”

The pastor, smiling benignly, replied, “Son, you’re in Texas now … You’re in God’s Country, It’s a local call.”
