Hey,
It’s another wild weekend at the Bikernet Interplanetary Headquarters in the Wilmington ghetto on the edge of the Port of Los Angeles. Just when we think life might simmer, the weekend explodes. I started to work on a tech about ordering hydraulic brake lines for motorcycles, while messing with the Bikernet advertising program for 2013. Then Gary Mraz, the esteemed Editor in Charge of Bikernet Trikes, sent me the story on Corey Miller.
The tech became more daunting than I envisioned and I jumped into the company van and peeled to Starbucks for a Ray Wheeler coffee concoction, then over to Baker Precision on Signal Hill, The lovely Darlene Baker can make virtually any brake line, but you must know what you want. We spent an hour discussing everything from fittings, to threads, to crush washers, and line coatings, from bare braided stainless to clear coatings and black. This is going to be a thorough tech, I hope. I reached out to Frank Kaisler, to check my findings. There are still several gray areas.
In the meantime I’m trying to wrap up a couple of features George Najar shot in Milwaukee. I reached out to the owners with tech charts. More info could fly at me at any minute. Then I spoke to Marilyn Stemp, the editor of Iron Works about a Spitfire feature on an Ironhead Sportster we will share in the near future. She needs the story asap. I’m on the case today when Markus Cuff peels to the Headquarters and we jump in the Bikernet van for the run to Rancho Cucamonga to shoot Paul Cavallo’s artistry in Iron bike for the HORSE. I’m going to write that story as well, and you’ll see the feature after the HORSE runs it on the cover of their Xmas issue. You’ll see teasers next week in the news.
Saturday I worked on the Post and the tech article, then cleaned the shop and some of the exterior of the building. I’m talking to contractors about replacing the windows out front and the massive arched hotel door. I don’t have the money, but what the hell. Somehow I’ll raise it. It’s time to start on the exterior. I want to have a mural painted on the side of the building. I’ve shot for city grants, help from the port, you name it to raise some funds. Now, I’ve got this nuts notion to offer it for shared advertising. There’s a moratorium on billboards in LA, but as the owner of this old building I can paint my business all over it, and if I’m cagey I can share the side of the building with a contributor. How about Corona/Bikernet motorcycle themed bikers on the side of our building. I can’t wait.
Let’s hit the news, then I’ll tell you about more content flying at all three of our sites.
ARCH MOTORCYCLE COMPANY COMING–
Keanu Reeves and builder Gard Hollinger are launching Arch Motorcycle Co. with production bikes expect “soon.” One prototype looks like a meld of cafe racer with a modified Twin Cam and strapped in polished aluminum. Reeves is the angle, of course, and a video of him riding the thing is among the company promo materials.
He is reputed to be a diehard, hardcore, real-deal enthusiast, rides everyday rain or shine. May be worth a story, especially if I can get an interview with the “Speed” actor himself. Keanu on a bike, on your home page, wouldn’t hurt.
What do you think, sir?

I’m sure anything is possible. We just published this story.

20 Crashes, 26 Arrests During Annual Biker Rally– Bikes, Blues and BBQ State police investigated 20 traffic crashes on Northwest Arkansas highways last week, but saw no deaths during the annual Bikes, Blues and BBQ motorcycle rally.
Fifteen crashes on the highway involved injuries. Washington and Benton counties each saw six crashes and five injuries. Madison County had six crashes and four injuries. Caroll County saw just two crashes and one injury, according to the Arkansas State Police.
The number of accidents, arrests and citations issued at Bikes, Blues and BBQ in Fayetteville city limits were down this year, according to police.
A total of 26 arrests were made inside the Dickson Street event area.
“We had one less arrest than last year, fewer citations issued, numbers were down a little bit,” Sgt. Craig Stout said Monday, after the four-day rally ended.
Of the 26 arrests, 19 were local residents. Sgt. Stout says that’s a consistent trend each year. The majority of charges involved the public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
Last year, police received 19 calls of accidents in Fayetteville involving motorcycles. But only 11 accidents were reported during the event this year. No fatalities were reported.
Sgt. Stout said he wasn’t sure what might have contributed to less arrests and accidents. But for the first time this year, police closed a section of Dickson for the rally, which may have eased congestion. There were four citations issued in the Dickson Street event area this year, according to a news release from the police department. Two were citations were issued for minor in possession of alcohol and two for violation of the city noise ordinance from bikers revving their engines.
The department investigated three reports of stolen motorcycles, one of which was recovered during the event.
The number of citations issued and reports of stolen motorcycles were also down this year compared to last, according to Sgt. Stout.

BIKE BUILDING TREND GROWING IN NC–A bike I whipped up in a few short weeks.
It’s just a little project I have whipped up in between customers. Nothin’ special really, A sportster engine in a chopped-up Paughco frame and a few do dads and hand built parts. Not quite done but here’s what I got.
It is in fact for sale. I actually built this whole bike in the back of a car hauler in between shops. I had stopped building bikes for a couple years and restarted after I met my new wife Nicole. Here in NC the bike business is picking up and I am diving back into it head first.

I actually bought some land and I’m having a shop built as we we speak. I’ll send you some progress pics on the shop and the bikes I’ve been building.

SUNDAY DIGITAL DISCOVERY–
I know a lot of you are busy so I don’t bother you often, but this is worth it! A miniature bike shop that is truly AMAZING!
Enjoy!

I suggested cutting the end off so the new piece would slip in. Then they ask how. I pass them a hacksaw and continue on my way. My son and his friends asking me for advice is becoming a fairly regular occurrence. I’ve become that old guy. I don’t think flipping the page over to the fortieth year has had much to do with it but there is a certain calmness I take from it. I’ve been there and done that, my opinion matters from insight and wisdom that comes from years.
Maybe it is because I grew up on a farm and we never really had a lot of money but there are few things I haven’t tried or wouldn’t be intimidated to attempt. When something broke you bought the parts needed to fix it, maybe the specialty tool if required. We built houses and dug wells.
I wasn’t until my son passed me a punch card for a Man Card my experiences real struck home. On it was the usual things one would expect to find – grow a beard, change oil in a car, but others were more obscure like becoming a lumberjack. It seemed like a joke at first because being a lumber jack seems like a pretty big commitment to becoming a real man until my wife pointed out a couple weeks I spent helping out a friend with his tree cutting service cutting down trees or the countless miles of trees I planted on the barren prairie soil.
Though short-lived I guess I was a lumberjack of sorts. The more I thought about it the more accomplished I felt. I’ve walked the streets of Rome, rolled in Inglewood, Watts and Compton, I’ve cheered for the Packers in another team’s stadium, made porn stars blush. I’ve crossed the Mississippi, traveled North to no man’s land, walked in the Pacific Ocean, sat on the dock in Wilmington, California and stared at the faces of Mount Rushmore. I’ve walked with bears in the wild, nursed an owl’s broken wing back to health and sat as a Bald Eagle took perch in the tree above. I’ve married my sweetheart and have held not only my two children but also a granddaughter in my arms.
I’m not alone. Most of you reading this have accomplished more then could ever be asked of a man or woman. It is part of being a biker. We roll up our sleeves and do what has to be done. Not because it has been asked or expected but because of what is deep inside. We walk in freedom, are the embodiment of freedom that no man, no country, no government can take from us.
We don’t need a card – it is just who we are.

Most road restraint systems do not offer any protection to motorcyclists falling off, sliding or rolling onto the pavement. Victims are likely to hit one or more posts, which have no energy absorption properties. As a result, collision with guardrail posts is a major cause of fatal motorcyclist injury, along with serious limb and organ injury often leading to amputation.
A great variety of motorcycle protection systems is available in Europe. These products can be installed along the road or combined with existing road restraint systems and offer protection not only to car occupants but also to users of two-wheelers. www.mc-roadsidebarriers.eu presents these products and offers a comprehensive search function to help interested road authorities and infrastructure operators identify suitable products. Manufacturers are also invited to provide information about their products.
The website includes a download link to the publication “New Standards for Road Restraint Systems for Motorcyclists – Designing safer roadsides for motorcyclists”. This document provides accurate and complete information on the solutions available to road authorities and infrastructure operators who wish to upgrade road restraint systems, by presenting the current technical standards available, statistical data and in-depth research, accident profiles configurations, as well as best practices and success stories.
In addition, these guidelines feature a comprehensive list of road restraint products available on the market today, their characteristics, their use, the standards against which they are tested, and guidelines on where and how they should be used to the best benefit.

A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, ‘Do you think I’ll live to be 80?’
He asked, ‘Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?’
‘Oh no,’ I replied. ‘I’m not doing drugs, either!’
Then he asked, ‘Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?’
‘I said, ‘Not much… my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!’
‘Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?’
‘No, I don’t,’ I said.
He asked, ‘Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lots of sex?’
‘No,’ I said…
He looked at me and said,..
‘Then, why do you even give a shit?’

Although scholars would later question her guilt, exotic dancer, courtesan to powerful men, and accused German spy Mata Hari was executed by a French firing squad on Oct. 15, 1917.
“Mata Hari, the Dutch dancer and adventuress, who two months ago was found guilty by a court-martial on the charge of espionage, was shot at dawn this morning,” announced the dispatch from Paris published in that day’s Boston Evening Herald.
“Mlle. Mata Hari, long known in Europe as a woman of great attractiveness and with a romantic history, was, according to unofficial press dispatches, accused of conveying to the Germans the secret of the construction of the Entente ‘tanks,’ this resulting in the enemy’s rushing work on a special gas to combat their operations.”

Margarine was originally developed as a cheap substitute for butter, and has evolved from some fairly unappealing animal-based ingredients into a vegetable-oil based spread with added chemicals that make it more flavorful and easier to spread. To achieve that solid, spreadable consistency, margarine manufacturers add hydrogenated vegetable oil, creating unhealthy compounds that may contribute to heart disease and stroke. In addition, the heat and chemicals used to harden vegetable oils produce trans-fatty acids (TFAs), which can contribute to heart disease, increase cancer risks, promote inflammation and accelerate tissue degeneration.
Butter is definitely the better choice. In fact, some recent studies suggest that natural saturated fats, such as those found in butter, may not significantly contribute to cardiovascular disease, though I believe further study is warranted. In any case, butter is closer to a whole food than margarine. If you must opt for a spread that is not extra virgin olive oil, I suggest natural, organic butter in limited quantities.

BIKERNET 5-Ball RACING WHEELER REPORT–
THE ADRENALINE CLOCK IS TICKING
El Mirage Oct. 21, 13 days
Speed Week Bonneville Aug. 10-16, 2013
BUB Speed Trials Aug. 25-29 (guess-timate)
NHRA action this weekend in Reading, Pa. leading the motorcycle class, Eddie Krawlec, 6.799@ 196.56. 2nd, Andrew Hines, 6.824@ 195.93 mph. Finals start at noon after the flag ceremony, while your Sunday news is being prepared. Enjoy the races.
Life is fantastic with a surprise around every corner these days. Two out of three of my sons wives will have children in the near future. Three grand children and I’m only 68 and counting.
Then, at a gas station out of the blue last week an offer was made for my record setting hot rod Dyna, in a somewhat timely manner. Check is in the mail? Seems the latest Turbo-charged hot rod is near completion and needs a few bucks to pay back bills, or out the door ya go, and move ahead with a clear conscience. My 2nd job pays shit these days. What 2nd job?
Day by day we are making major progress on our 5-Ball Racing Team 124 inch Turbo-Charged build.
Here in the Beach Racing Hobby Shop we’re down to the fine life saving details. The past couple of days we rebuilt the swing arm, set up the spacing for thrust washers with the correct seals to keep debris out and the grease in. We also removed the mock up races from the neck, replacing them with USA Timkens. The performance steering stabilizer from Pingel fit perfectly after a trip to the local Fastenal for the necessary hardware.
Prior to our first land speed event we’ll change out the old fashioned, slow ass steel bearings in the rims for the latest ceramic, fast ass bearings. 40% less friction vs. steel, 60% less rotating weight, last 3-5 times longer than steel. At a smooth 200 mph pass an extra 6 mph might make or break the record. Its in the fine details, preparation is 99% of the race.
Back to the drawing board and the final details, brakes and brake lines for the wrap up of one helluva street/landspeed bike. Start up, very soon.
Sleepless in Morgan Hill, Ca.
Go for a really fast ride, it’s good for your heart.
Helps mine, WTF?

Went to the dealer with my friend and instead of using the car he said, you take that bike and here’s your helmet. Sportster XL 1200 – dicey a bit.

MARIJUNA JOINT FALLS OUT OF ASSISTANT DA POCKET—IN COURT–
A New Orleans attorney was cited for marijuana possession this week after a joint tumbled out of his pocket in front of police, according to media reports.
Police say Jason Cantrell, who has a private practice but also serves as a part-time assistant city attorney, was in the magistrate section of criminal court chatting with police officers when a marijuana joint fell out of his pocket and onto the floor, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.
Cantrell, 43, was a first-time offender and was cited, issued a summons to appear in court for simple possession of marijuana and let go, according to police spokesman Garry Flot.
The handling of his case is the result of an effort by city leaders and prosecutors two years ago to unclog a congested system and allow people arrested for having a small amount of marijuana on them to receive a summons and not be taken to jail, according to the Times-Picayune.
Besides being a private practice attorney, Cantrell doubles as a part-time city attorney, handling cases in traffic court. He was not working for the city when the incident occurred.
City Hall spokesman Ryan Berni told WDSU that Cantrell has been suspended without pay, pending an investigation.
Cantrell’s wife, LaToya, is a candidate for a district seat on the City Council. She released a statement apologizing for her husband and saying, “I absolutely do not condone his actions,” the New York Daily News reported.
“I love my husband unconditionally and am very concerned for his health and well-being, and for that of our family,” LaToya said. “I hope that this incident will encourage Jason to seek the professional help.”
Cantrell has practiced civil and criminal law in New Orleans for 17 years, including six as a public defender in juvenile court.
He ran for a position as a judge in juvenile court in 2009 but lost.

With that, Leroy got in line, and when it was his turn, the Preacher asked, “Leroy, what do you want me to pray about for you?”
Leroy replied, “Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing.”
The preacher put one finger of one hand in Leroy’s ear, placed his other hand on top of Leroy’s head, and then prayed and prayed and prayed. He prayed a “blue streak” for Leroy, and the whole congregation joined in with great enthusiasm.
After a few minutes, the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, “Leroy, how is your hearing now?”
Leroy answered, ” I don’t know. It ain’t ’til Thursday.”
