Hey,
Ultimate Builder Custom Competition hits Long Beach this weekend. So, we have prepped all week with new outdoor lighting, cleaning the shop, hosting folks, meetings, photo shoots, and hauling two bikes, including the 2014 cross-country Indian to the show.
It’s non-stop with Jeff Najar, the boss of the Ultimate Builder Competition arriving last night and we hauled ass to Alhambra to visit Chris Richardson, at the LA Speed Shop.
This evening we will hit it to the RSD/Indian new model announcement in San Pedro. We better hit the news before anything else happens.
This news is proudly co-sponsored by Cycle Source Magazine, Iron Trader, and ChopperTown.
BIKERNET TURNS 20– Wow 20 years, congrats Bikernet Crew! Incredible,1996 seems like yesterday, Easyriders Mag was still great with Bandit at the head and Mike Osborne, Twiggy and a lot more good stuff.
The great Paul Lax stepped down as executive Director of Abate of Ca. that year and I took the job for the next ten years. So much has changed but we still have helmet laws, joined by a ton of other new laws and regulations that bury us in fascism smothering freedom while piling up the cost of living as well as depressing the exciting possibilities that new technology could offer motorcycling.
I hope Bikernet can continue to help lead us, the way that ER Mag led the fight for freedom back in the day. It’s a massive element of our lifestyle. It’s what we are so passionate about. Thanks for all you have done, and best wishes for even more future success!

FIM Europe and FEMA welcome the new report on motorcycle safety from OECD-ITF– We welcome the new report on motorcycle safety from OECD-ITF (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development – International Transport Forum)!
Now, there is official recognition that alongside the 62 million cars produced every year there are also 50 million new motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. These riders also need to be taken care of in transport and road safety policies.
The process began in 2008 with the OECD-ITF conference co organized with FEMA in Lillehammer, Norway. FIM was also present alongside experts and riders representatives from around the world. There it was agreed this report should be prepared and it has taken until 2014 to get it finalized.
The report’s principal recommendations set the frame for governments to work in, both in the developed countries and in middle and low-income nations. The ITF membership includes major motorcycling countries India and China as well as those in the OECD nations.
Riders will also expect that this document is respected in policy decisions taken on motorcycling by the European Union. Many of the issues that concern riding are today taken at EU level. Political leaders and officials in Brussels are invited to take note!

SENATE APPOINTS NEGOTIATORS FOR HIGHWAY BILL TALKS– Lawmakers in the Senate appointed negotiators for the upcoming conference on highway funding with House on Tuesday after voting to open up the bicameral talks.
The chambers are hoping to hash out an agreement ahead of a Nov. 20 deadline for renewing federal road funding that is currently set to expire on that date.
Leaders in the Senate appointed seven Republicans and six Democrats to sit in on the forthcoming negotiations with the House, including Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), the top ranking lawmakers on the upper chamber’s Environment and Public Works Committee.
Lawmakers have expressed optimism that they will be able to reach an agreement in time to get a highway funding bill to President Obama’s desk before the scheduled interruption in federal road funding.
“Both the Senate and the House bills have many similarities that will allow for a very short conference period,” Inhofe (R-Okla.) said in a statement while the House was finishing work on its version of the highway bill.
“With this milestone, Congress should be able to send a bill to the president’s desk by Thanksgiving,” he continued. “This will allow for our nation to avoid the Highway Trust Fund hitting a dangerously low level, which DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx warned would significantly affect the 2016 construction season.”
Both chambers have passed bills that would guarantee at least three years of highway and transit spending, but only if Congress can come up with a way to pay for the final three years.
The highway bill that was approved by the House on Thursday calls for spending $261 billion on highways and $55 billion on transit over six years. The legislation authorizes highway funding for six years. The Senate passed a similar piece of legislation that contained three years’ worth of guaranteed highway funding in July.
The Senate voted 82-7 to begin bicameral negotiations on a potential compromise.
Other Republican highway bill conferees announced on Tuesday by the House include Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), John Cornyn (R-Texas), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Deb Fischer (R-Neb.).
Additional Democratic Senate highway bill conferees include Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).
–the Hill.com
Comment: “Both versions of the legislation would authorize highway and transit programs for six years, and both contain Senate-developed revenue provisions that are estimated to support those programs for at least three years.
That would make it the first legislation since 2005 to extend trust fund programs more than two years, even if Congress would still have to find a way to fund it past the first three.
But the House also approved an amendment that could shift another $40 billion to the Highway Trust Fund from a surplus capital account of the Federal Reserve System. That extra amount, along with other revenue provisions, would reportedly be enough to fund the entire bill for six years at House-prescribed levels, or five years at higher Senate levels.
The same amendment stripped out Senate-passed language to sharply reduce the dividend Fed pays member commercial banks on the money they deposit with the central bank. That provision had triggered a strong push by the banking industry to remove it from any final bill. But by tapping the Fed’s capital surplus instead, the House provision may add much more funding for the transportation bill.”

DUCATI WORLD PREMIERE–
Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati, presents the latest 2016 products in Milan: seven new motorcycles unveiled on the eve of EICMA 2015.
Streamed live all around the globe, the Ducati World Première 2016 saw the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer unveil its new bikes for the 2016 range on the eve of EICMA 2015. Buoyed by the just-achieved target of 50,000 bike sales and brimming with new products, innovative technology and plans for the future, it’s a solid, confident Ducati that’s heading to the event in Milan.
These are true dream bikes: ready to thrill the swathes of enthusiasts soon to descend on the 73rd edition of the International Motorcycle Show to be held at the Milan-Rho trade fair from 19 to 22 November.
The press conference offered Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, a perfect opportunity to unveil the latest bikes and sum up developments on the market and at Ducati. Against the backdrop of a global market that is expanding yet still way behind pre-recession performance, Ducati not only continues to grow but has done so with a final end-of-year spurt.
“In 2015 Ducati sold over 50,000 bikes: a huge success that was achieved without growth being a goal in itself: it was, rather, the result of our customers being extremely satisfied with our products”, stated Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding during the presentation press conference. “After a long period of shrinkage, the motorcycle market is now showing promising signs of recovery and this, together with the effects of continuous product innovation and geographical expansion into new markets, has allowed us to increase sales in the first ten months of 2015 by more than 20% with respect to last year.
This is an outstanding result, thanks also to the success of the Ducati Scrambler, a brand that won over new fans immediately. The title of the Ducati World Première 2016 was ‘More than Red: Black, Wild and Pop’.
The message is clear: Ducati is strongly rooted in the sports motorcycle world and is continuing to extend its reach. And that means expansion into new segments: Black like the XDiavel, a true cruiser; Wild like the Multistrada 1200 Enduro, a bike to break down the barriers on any terrain; Pop like the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, an even lighter Ducati Scrambler with all the appeal of its smaller 400 cc engine.
In total we have 7 new bikes at EICMA 2015. These, together with the Monster 1200 R, already presented at Frankfurt, and a new Ducati Scrambler version developed jointly with Italian Independent to be presented at the end of the year, bring the number of new Ducati bikes for 2016 to nine.”
The Ducati World Première 2016 showcased several new bikes: two new Ducati Scramblers, the Flat Track Pro version and the all-new Sixty2; the new Hypermotard 939, Hypermotard 939 SP and Hyperstrada 939 family; the new Panigale 959; the Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak; the new Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the eagerly awaited XDiavel.
One of the most eagerly awaited bikes at EICMA 2015 was undoubtedly the XDiavel: in short, the “black” world cited in the title of the Ducati World Première 2016. This intriguing new bike sees Ducati enter the Cruiser world in its own inimitable way by presenting a true cruiser that has all the design, technology and performance one expects from a Ducati thoroughbred.
Called the XDiavel, it brings together two worlds: the Cruiser world – low speeds, relaxed riding and long journeys – and the Ducati world, characterised by Italian style, refined engineering and unparalleled performance. The XDiavel offers both the “low speed excitement” that comes from the relaxed riding and further-forward footpegs typical of a cruiser and the adrenaline rush of sports riding that Ducati has made its own.
That’s what the X in XDiavel stands for: the merging of two apparently separate, distant worlds on one bike, a superb combination where both are accomplished without compromise.
5,000, 60, 40. Three numbers that sum up the XDiavel concept. 5,000 as in the rpm at which the new twin-cylinder 156 hp Ducati Testastretta DVT 1262 engine achieves maximum torque (13.1 kgm). 60 as in the number of different ergonomic configurations for the rider.
Lastly, 40, as in the maximum attainable lean angle. The XDiavel is the first Ducati to use belt-type final transmission, a must within the Cruiser world. The Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), together with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Riding Modes, Bosch Cornering ABS, Cruise Control and the innovative Ducati Power Launch (DPL) system, make the XDiavel a technological gem offering high performance and safety. An S version of the XDiavel is also available.
The all-new Multistrada 1200 Enduro opens up a whole new “Wild” world and represents Ducati’s entry into the maxi-enduro segment. Born to explore, unstoppable on any terrain, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is a full-optional bike designed to satisfy even the most demanding globetrotter.
Moreover, it’s a maxi-enduro that has specifically been designed and built to handle the stress and strain of off-road riding. Thanks to spoked wheels – 19’’ at the front and 17’’ at the rear – the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is perfect for long adventure rides. Featuring electronic semi-active Sachs suspension (front and rear) and a 30-litre fuel tank, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is at home on any terrain and is unstoppable thanks to a range that can exceed 450 kilometres.
On the Multistrada 1200 Enduro Cornering ABS, Cornering Lights (DCL), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) and the semi-active Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) Evolution system, with 200 mm of wheel travel, all come as standard. Moreover, Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) has been introduced to aid uphill starts. Lastly, in parallel with the Multistrada 1200 Enduro itself, a broad range of dedicated accessories – the most important being an aluminium luggage set – has also been developed.
The “Pop” segment, the third of the ‘new worlds’ that Ducati has entered with its new 2016 bikes, just had to have a link to the Scrambler “Land of Joy”. The Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 doesn’t just extend the range on offer from the new Ducati brand: it opens the way for a new two-wheel segment that meets the requirements of those seeking an affordable bike that’s easy to handle and has low running costs, but simply can’t do without that unique Ducati Scrambler spirit: fun and shared thrills.
The Sixty2 is a Ducati Scrambler that draws its inspiration from youth street culture, skateboards, street food, pop music and, above all, the pop art that, back in 1962 (the year the very first Ducati Scrambler was launched), was taking the United States by storm. That’s why the Sixty2, a true “people’s” Ducati Scrambler, is already a “pop icon”.
With the Sixty2, the highly expressive Ducati Scrambler design takes on a fresh look thanks to a slim-line steel tank with dedicated graphics and logos. This makes the Sixty2 immediately recognizable, as do its three exclusive colors.
Anti-conformist, affordable and essential, the Sixty2 once again provides that perfect Ducati Scrambler mix of tradition and modernity, a mix now closer than ever to the essence of motorcycling: two wheels and a simple 399 cc engine that guarantees tons of fun.
Wide handlebars and a long seat ensure a comfortable, relaxed riding position. The low barycentre and a new 160/60 x 17″ rear tyre with a slightly chunky surface pattern ensure great handling and pure enjoyment whatever the situation, not to mention confident braking thanks to the as-standard ABS.
Also in attendance at the Ducati World Première 2016 were some of Ducati’s top riders. Both official MotoGP riders – Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone – were there to ride the new Hypermotards 939 onto the stage; the event also saw Davide Giugliano in the spotlight on the new Panigale 959 (he’s now ready to return to the track on his SBK following a serious fall at Laguna Seca).
Also present in Milan was Troy Bayliss, there to endorse – and sing the praises of – the Flat Track Pro version of the Ducati Scrambler.
The Ducati World Première 2016 also offered a perfect opportunity to officially inform all the fans and enthusiasts watching the live feed of the dates for the next WDW, the legendary two-yearly Ducatisti global gathering. This is now set to take place from 1 to 3 July 2016.
In addition to the bikes, Ducati also presented a host of new accessories, special parts and a new clothing collection for 2016; the latter featuring both the more ‘technical’ items and eye-catching apparel and accessories fully dedicated to the Ducati Scrambler world. A preview of the collection took place at the Fonderia Napoleonica Eugenia in Milan, an event that saw press, public and fans make their way through the engagingly original Ducati Scrambler “Land of Joy”.
Ducati is at EICMA 2015 in Hall 15, at Stand M04 and M30.

Entertainment, Flag Waving and False Patriotism– The surrender of the American Biker
–byTony “Pan” Sanfelipo
It’s been said in the past that the biker might be one of the last bastions of hope in defending our freedoms in America. Since the start of our grass-roots movement in the early 1970s, the American biker has proven a resolve and resiliency in doing battle with government agencies trying to regulate every aspect of our lifestyle.
Of course, when this movement started, motorcycle registrations were hundreds of thousands less than what they are today. The motorcycle community was much smaller and inundated with veterans and progeny of the protest era. The motorcycle rights movement was alive and flourishing.
Along with growth came the desire to put on a happy, positive face. Most ABATE groups changed the original meaning of the acronym to something more positive. After all, A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments was not only hard to spell, many members didn’t even know what that meant.
There was also a desire to put forth a positive image and provide “entertainment” for the members. This may have been an attempt to simulate what Harley-Davidson was doing with its H.O.G. program. So we got into the charity and party business during lulls in the legislative arena.
Today, it seems there is more attendance at poker runs and chili cook-offs than there is at legislative endeavors. Thousands show up for breast cancer rides or similar good causes, but only hundreds or less for freedom rallies or lobby efforts.
Even more concerning is the abandonment of the watch-dog mentality that challenged every encroachment of our rights.
On November 15, 2015, something happened in Milwaukee that exemplified the surrender of the American bikers’ rights activist. A call went out urging riders to form a motorcycle welcome for the USS Milwaukee, coming to the port for its commissioning ceremony. The notice came from Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 in Milwaukee. Right at the top of the mass email was this:
NOTE: Absolutely NO WEAPONS allowed. Please leave at home or you will just need to stay home. THANKS! This is a directive from the U.S. Navy and Milwaukee County Parks.
My immediate response was, “by what authority are they using this directive?” I had an extended phone conversation with the chairman of the board of Rolling Thunder Chapter 2, and it was apparent he was going to honor the request of the Navy and Harbor Park for what he considered a good event honoring veterans. If you don’t see the problem with this way of thinking, you probably shouldn’t read any further because you won’t understand any of the reasons this is so wrong.
We’re facing an onslaught of anti-motorcycling sentiment from the government, law enforcement agencies and the media. Motorcycle profiling is at the top of the list of problems we’re dealing with. Bikers and veterans are considered a domestic threat by many agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI. Is this the reason the Navy requested no weapons at the USS Milwaukee event?

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY STILL OPEN– Two priests decided to go to Hawaii on vacation. They were determined to make this a real vacation by not wearing anything that would identify them as clergy.
As soon as the plane landed they headed for a store and bought some really outrageous shorts, shirts, sandals, sunglasses, etc. The next morning they went to the beach dressed in their ‘tourist’ garb.
They were sitting on beach chairs, enjoying a drink, the sunshine and the scenery when a ‘drop dead gorgeous’ blonde in a topless bikini came walking straight towards them. They couldn’t help but stare.
As the blonde passed them she smiled and said ‘Good Morning, Father ~ Good Morning, Father,’ nodding and addressing each of them individually, then she passed on by.
They were both stunned. How in the world did she know they were priests? So the next day, they went back to the store and bought even more outrageous outfits.
These were so loud you could hear them before you even saw them! Once again, in their new attire, they settled down in their chairs to enjoy the sunshine.
After a little while, the same gorgeous blonde, wearing a different colored topless bikini, taking her sweet time, came walking toward them. Again she nodded at each of them, said ‘Good morning, Father ~ Good morning, Father,’ and started to walk away.
One of the priests couldn’t stand it any longer and said, ‘Just a minute, young lady.
”Yes, Father?’ she answered. ‘We are priests and proud of it, but I have to know, how in the world do you know we are priests, dressed as we are?
‘She replied, ‘Father, it’s me, Sister Judy in my beach outfit.’

ANOTHER BIKER BOOK OF THE WEEK– The Ride 2nd Gear–
New Custom Motorcycles and Their Builders.
Men and motorcycles: a story that has vacillated somewhere between cult and cliché for years. Custom bikes, in particular, have a history that is deeply rooted in the spirit of freedom and change of the 1960s, as well as man’s primal urge to build something with his own hands—or, in this case, tools. The Ride 2nd Gear is a showcase of the power and beauty of these bikes.
The book presents a stunning selection of recent custom motorcycles, as well as the small, local workshops around the globe in which they are built. Hotbeds of creativity and craftsmanship, these workshops are mostly run by single individuals and attract a small yet devoted community of fans and fellow builders.
Its pages are filled with bikes that offer extraordinary design and driving experiences. In fact, established brands are now acting on trends set by the custom scene whose bikes are often more radical and sophisticated because more attention can be paid to detail and each new idea can be fine-tuned to perfection.

GUN NUT REPORT– 20 Years and Millions of “Assault Weapons” and “Large” Magazines Ago…
Twenty years ago, not long after Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) federal “assault weapon” and “large” magazine “ban” took effect, CBS 60 Minutes reporter Lesley Stahl faced a dilemma. To help Feinstein make her case for a new ban that would cover more types of guns and more magazines, CBS would have to do something that doesn’t come naturally to gun control supporters. It would have to tell the truth.
The network hadn’t done so previously. In 1989, the year Senators Howard Metzenbaum (D-Ohio) and Dennis DeConcini (D-Ariz.) introduced the first “assault weapon” bills in Congress, CBS 48 Hours had tried to drum up public support for a ban by showing fully-automatic firearms being fired during a story about semi-automatic “assault weapons.”
Interspersed with video footage of machine gun bursts and placards labeled “machine gun” for those who couldn’t figure it out for themselves, the subsequently discredited news anchor, Dan Rather, intoned, “Armed and deadly. . . . The right to bear arms. . . . Have we gone too far?”
In 1995, however, CBS did the right thing, even if for the wrong reason, by exposing the ineptitude with which Feinstein’s legislation had been written, and the patent dishonesty of its most enthusiastic supporter, President Bill Clinton.
Stahl showed footage of Clinton claiming the legislation “will finally ban these assault weapons from our streets.” On the one hand, she didn’t point out that most detachable-magazine, semi-automatic rifles were not “on the streets,” but were instead at the rifle range, in hunting fields, or locked behind closed doors in people’s homes. However, Stahl derided Clinton’s claim as “a good applause line.” Calling 1994 “the best year for the sales of assault weapons ever,” Stahl said, “these banned weapons are still everywhere.” She offered two reasons why.
First, firearms and magazines lawfully within the United States before the “ban” took effect on Sept. 13, 1994, were exempt. Second, the “ban” allowed manufacturers to continue making and selling “banned” firearms, provided that certain external attachments were omitted as the firearms came down the assembly line. The most common resulting firearm: an AR-15, absent its standard flash suppressor and bayonet mount. Over 730,000 AR-15s in this so-called “post-ban” configuration were made and sold during the 10 years the “ban” was on the books.
Stahl could have also mentioned, but didn’t, that magazines manufactured overseas before the law took effect were exempt as well. That exemption, according to the sponsor of the “ban” in the House of Representatives, Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), resulted in the importation of 50 million “large” magazines during the 10 years the “ban” was in effect.
For these reasons, the Violence Policy Center (VPC), the handgun prohibition group that in 1988 had conceived the idea of campaigning against “assault weapons” as a way to “strengthen the handgun restriction lobby,” complained that the “ban” was “badly flawed,” “a ban in name only,” and a “charade.”
In 2003, 2005 and 2007, then-Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) introduced legislation to impose a ban that would do what Feinstein’s 1994 legislation had failed to do, and in 2013 Feinstein introduced the same sort of legislation herself. Dishonestly, gun control supporters have said that the new legislation proposed to “reinstate” the earlier “ban,” and the media played along.
In December 2012, USA Today said, “President Obama supports efforts to reinstate an assault weapons ban.” In January this year, the Washington Post said that President Obama’s gun control proposals included “reinstating the assault weapons ban.” A petition promoted online by Change.org in early 2013 urged the U.S. Senate to “Reinstate the federal assault weapons ban” and, after the Senate refused to do so, the New York Times reported, “Senate Vote 101 Rejects Feinstein Proposal to Reinstate Assault Weapons Ban.”
However, the new legislation didn’t propose to “reinstate” anything. Back in 1995, during the 60 Minutes piece, Feinstein had said, “If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them—‘Mr. and Mrs. America, turn ‘em all in,’ I would have done it.” Her 2013 legislation didn’t go that far, but it proposed to ban the manufacture and importation of all semi-automatic shotguns and all detachable-magazine semi-automatic rifles, regardless of their appearance, along with other categories of guns and magazines holding more than 10 rounds.
Maybe one day Lesley Stahl will cover the issue again. If she does, we hope she will make it clear that Americans now own tens of millions of semi-automatic shotguns and detachable-magazine semi-automatic rifles, an equal or larger number of semi-automatic handguns, and so many tens of millions of “large” magazines for semi-automatic rifles and handguns, and even some other firearms, that it’s pointless to guess their precise number.
And, though Americans are now much better armed for their protection than when the first “assault weapon” and “large” magazine bans were proposed, the nation’s murder rate is at an all-time low.
Having seen 60 Minutes in action on another gun issue recently, however, we won’t hold our breath.

Seven-time land speed record holder Valerie Thompson plans to compete for a full season of NHRA drag racing next year with a Star Racing built Pro Stock Motorcycle as an independent team owner and driver. Thompson will also continue seeking new land speed racing records with her team’s BMW S 1000 RR at select events in 2016.
In addition with technical support by Star Racing, Thompson’s team will be led by recently appointed crew chief, Chris Rivas. Rivas is a former Pro Stock Motorcycle racer with four NHRA event wins and six land speed racing world records.
“Chris Rivas has been successful in drag racing while setting new land speed records. As a crew chief, he will be one of my biggest assets. He understands the difference between quarter-mile and land speed racing, so he can help our team with everything from bike set-up to my riding technique as I transition back to drag racing,” added Thompson.
Thompson’s motorcycle-racing career began in the All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) where she finished third in the V-Rod Destroyer class in 2007 and was featured in a Super Bowl commercial with Danica Patrick. She also entered several NHRA events in 2008 with a best elapsed time 7.05 seconds.
“I have a real passion for land speed racing, but I can’t express how excited I am to return to my ‘racing roots’ with a bike built by George Bryce’s Star Racing team. George and his wife Jackie, operate one of the most successful NHRA Pro Stock motorcycle teams in the history of the sport, so I’m confident we will do well next year,” said Thompson.
“I’m delighted to see Valerie returning to drag racing and thankful she chose Star Racing to help her new team. We are also looking forward to working with Chris Rivas again,” said George Bryce, Star Racing owner.
Thompson formed her own land speed racing team in 2012 and recorded a personal best top speed of 217 mph at the 2014 Texas Mile. This year, Thompson became the first female member of the Colorado Mile 200 MPH Club on her Quicksilver Powersports Lubricants/CTEK BMW Motorrad and is now a member of six-land speed racing 200 MPH Clubs, including the prestigious Bonneville 200 MPH Club. As a result, she is often referred to as “America’s Queen of Speed.”
The 2016 NHRA schedule includes 16 Pro Stock Motorcycle events with the first scheduled for March 17 – 20 at the Gatornationals in Gainesville Florida.

BROTHER SPEED CLUB COURT VICTORY–
Why the Brother Speed MC Victory is So Important
The Brother Speed MC settlement over a 2013 raid at their Nampa, Idaho clubhouse is a textbook example of how law enforcement uses the media following baseless military-style raids to promote a negative perception of motorcycle clubs to the general public.
Almost always, these raids amount to nothing but a photo op to feed a paradigm of profiling and discrimination. But notice that the stories about the settlement are barely a blip on the radar compared to the news coverage of the initial raid. It is important that Brother Speed’s story be told and shared in an attempt to encourage others to fight back and balance the scales of perception from Sons of Absurdity back to reality.
In August 2013, over 40 heavily armed state and federal law enforcement agents raided the Brother Speed clubhouse in Nampa and held everyone captive for over 3 hours. The warrant was sealed so there was no reasoning given for the raid. Of course, nothing was found in the clubhouse and no one was arrested or charged with a crime. But that did not stop law enforcement from seizing property and spreading generalized propaganda to justify a culture of discrimination.
Boise Police Gang Unit Detective Dave Leavitt was not on that raid, but claims to have extensive experience dealing with what he calls Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs in Idaho and offered “insight” into the Brother Speed MC to local media outlets.
As reported by 7 KTVB.com news in Idaho on August 30, 2013, Leavitt said that:
“groups like those raided by federal agents in Nampa are different than just an average group of riders who like to get together on the weekends, wear leather and ride.
What’s the line between them? Criminal activity. The outlaw motorcycle clubs or gangs, like Brother Speed, is going to commit criminal acts.” Leavitt continued. “Brother Speed started in the late 60s in Boise, with a group of motorcycle enthusiasts, but today police say the group has changed over time. Eventually it morphed and changed into what it is today, an outlaw motorcycle club with a three-piece patch that commits criminal activity.”
These generalized claims are based on pure stereotype as demonstrated by the lack of particularized proof of criminality. Brother Speed MC is simply not a criminal organization and the Nampa chapter is a perfect example of police rhetoric being dis-proven by reality. According to a press release issued by the club’s attorney Craig Durham:
“Brother Speed was founded in Boise in 1969 by a group of men with a common passion for riding American-made motorcycles . . . The members of the Nampa/Caldwell chapter members are primarily tradesmen, they said, including a pipe fitter, a tile setter, an electrician, and a plumber, among others. Four are retired.”
Brother Speed MC refused to just accept excessive civil liberty violations as the result of a military-style SWAT raid accompanied by a sealed warrant:
“The club and its members sued numerous federal agents and the United States, saying their civil rights were violated when federal agents serving a search warrant broke down the door, set off flash-bang grenades, and sent dozens of heavily armed SWAT team members into the small home.
The club members were detained for up to three hours while agents forcibly removed their personal property, including their clothing, and confiscated club memorabilia, according to the club’s attorney, Craig Durham. “These were regular guys minding their own business that night,” Durham said. “They were not a threat, and there was no call for the use of terrifying, military-style tactics to serve a simple search warrant.”
“Ten members of the Brother Speed MC, along with the club itself, will be splitting a $16,500 payment from the United States government, to settle their lawsuit over a 2013 raid on their Nampa clubhouse that yielded no charges.”
Although the government is admitting no fault as a condition of the settlement, it is a big victory for a number of reasons. The club and its members are being compensated as a result of a deprivation of their rights as a result of an overly-broad and unjustified military-style raid. Moreover, the fact that law enforcement is not admitting fault will mean very little to the legislature when considering the costs of settlements compared to cost-free anti-motorcycle profiling legislation that reduces obvious civil liability exposure.
This victory demonstrates that motorcycle clubs, even those clubs labeled criminals by some in government, are not what sensationalized law enforcement reports say they are. Behind most raids is the true story of a motorcycle club, a 1st Amendment protected association, that deserves protection from discriminatory law enforcement practices fueled by inaccurate stereotypes.

YAMAHA INTRODUCES 2016 XSR900 SPORT MOTORCYCLE MODEL– Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., yesterday introduced the 2016 XSR900, a new motorcycle model that blends Yamaha’s world-class engineering with a standout neo-retro style, creating a new type of machine for riders who want an authentic and honest motorcycle that delivers exciting and uncompromising performance.
The XSR900 is powered by a thrilling 847cc Crossplane Crankshaft Concept, liquid-cooled, in-line 3-cylinder, DOHC, 4-valve-per-cylinder engine, based on the FZ-09TM.
Light and nimble handling are achieved through the XSR900 narrow all-aluminum frame with sport-oriented geometry and adjustable front and rear suspension. Ride-by-wire YCC-T® engine control, adjustable D-MODE throttle response, and an adjustable Traction Control System allows the rider to make the most of the potent engine and chassis.
Adding to modern controllability, the XSR900 utilizes an advanced assist-and-slipper clutch unit that allows for reduced clutch lever effort by 20%, as well as minimizing rear-wheel hop under aggressive deceleration. Exceptional braking power and confidence-inspiring deceleration are provided by sportbike-spec front brakes, backed up with the security of ABS.
Drawing influence from Yamaha’s classic “XS” series of motorcycles, the XSR oozes class, with exposed aluminum details, retro-influenced bodywork, stepped seat and custom lighting and instrumentation. The result is a new model with both a fine balance of cutting-edge Yamaha technology and exterior styling that delivers timeless authenticity.
The XSR900 will be available in two distinctive colors, Matte Gray/Aluminum and 60th Anniversary Yellow. For the Matte Gray/Aluminum color, the aluminum fuel tank covers are hand-buffed by skilled craftspeople and given a raw aluminum finish. And, for the 60th Anniversary Yellow color, the aluminum fuel tank covers are painted in yellow-and-black Yamaha racing livery. Each color scheme brings its own unique style and attitude to the bike.

ConvExx and HOLLISTER Part Ways for Future Rallies– ConvExx, the producers of the 2015 Hollister Freedom Rally, regretfully announce that they will not return to produce the rally in 2016.
Unfortunately, responsibilities of parties associated with the production of the Rally were not met, and ConvExx had to make the difficult decision to not continue its role in the production of future rallies on behalf of the city of Hollister.
Rally Chairman, Chuck Schwartz states, “We are certainly disappointed that we will not be able to help with the rally in the future. We went into this relationship with the hopes of building upon the great tradition of the Hollister motorcycle rally for the long term. We believe the rally has great potential for the future; however we could not come to an understanding with all the interested parties associated with the rally for the future.”
The 2015 rally was a huge success with an estimated attendance of over 40,000. Feedback was positive from rally vendors, attendees and local businesses.
ConvExx is very proud to have produced a successful event for the City of Hollister this past July, and wish the Hollister community only the best for the future.

So after the third beer, a guy decides to help the bartender out. The next time the bartender hit her boobs, the man jumps up and
starts to lick her breasts.
She decks him!
He is lying on the floor moaning, ‘Jeez, lady… Why do you let the bartender do it and not me?’

A MOST RARE BREED– A sneak peek at The 1905 NELK single, ‘rarer than hen’s teeth’ is how rare we hear this one is.
Looks to this correspondent to have Art Deco elements, & maybe Futurist, Bauhaus,too- it’s all circles, cyclinders, a five-pointed star in a circle in the rear chain drive hub, delicate levers, and an exhaust that could double for an upside down black teapot.
It is duo-chromatic Modern in black & silver only. The silver metal layered stack below the handlebars is not the gas tank, as it would be in a bike from today, but the radiator.
The gas tank resides behind the seat. Full feature next year in American Iron. Master of Ceremonies: Don Whalen.

UNCLE MONKEY ON PROJECTS– With one major project done and out the door waiting for a new owner and others waiting on paint, waiting on parts, I’ve turn my attention to the little side projects one tends to collect along the way.
It is just the nature of the beast, nature of someone who likes to spin wrenches. These include refinishing a vintage CCM pedal bike for Mrs. Monkey, finish restoring my 1942 South Bend 9-inch lathe, repairing dozens of my wife’s broken jewelry that I’ve been putting off for the last couple of years. Those are some of the little projects, and probably the only ones I will whittle away at.
There are still old chainsaws to restore, still old cars and trucks to get up and running, but for now it is just to remove some of the clutter that accumulates in the nooks and crannies. Everything was picked up with the best of intentions.
Some were started on while others waited patiently under foot. Some, like my little board track racer motor found itself a new home in California, others with a good friend here and there.
None were really big projects compared to building a complete motorcycle but just time fillers that were to fill the gaps. With seven bikes on the go it’s not like this is the perfect time to be wasting on these things but yet it is the perfect time to be puttering around on them.
It instills a sense of accomplishment, a sense for forward motion. It is easy to become overwhelmed with a to-do list running around in circles spending five minutes her and ten minutes there, but nothing really seems to be moving out the door.
With tackling a bunch of little things that can be done quickly that list becomes a lot shorter, the shiny new things sitting outside the door, sitting on a shelf or display case to tell me what I can accomplish.
There are still big projects waiting but they will be broken down into smaller more manageable pieces and when the times come they too will quickly fail into place as well.
In the mean time there will always be an old fridge waiting to be a beer fridge, another vintage tool that needs to be restored and cleaned up, a toy that needs to be appreciated again that will find its way into my hands.

72 TYPES OF AMERICANS CONSIDERED “POTENTIAL TERRORISTS”
Are you a conservative, a libertarian, a Christian or a gun owner? Support states’ rights? Belong to “The Patriot Movement”, or display a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag? Are you opposed to abortion, globalism, Communism, illegal immigration, the United Nations or the New World Order? Anti-establishment? Do you believe in conspiracy theories, or ever visit “extremist” websites? Are you a veteran? If you answered yes to any of those questions, or a vast array of others, you may be an “extremist” or a “potential terrorist” according to official U.S. government documents.
At one time, the term “terrorist” was used very narrowly, explains the alternative website www.activistpost.com, but says now the Obama administration is removing all references to Islam from terror training materials, and instead the term “terrorist” is being applied to large groups of American citizens, which it delineates in an article on their website; “72 Types of Americans That Are Considered ‘Potential Terrorists’ In Official Government Documents,” by D.C. attorney Michael Snyder.
The “list” covers much of our country’s demographics and most of its citizenry, but if you belong to a group of people that is now being considered as “potential terrorists” by the government, the author warns that you should not take it lightly.

This is an extremely well written article providing a succinct and logical argument. How can voluntarily relinquishing fundamental liberties be justified at a time motorcyclists and motorcycle clubs are battling an epidemic of profiling and discrimination coast-to-coast?
Thank you for being the constant reminder to our community that a true freedom fighter refuses to compromise principles for political purposes or a photo op.

ONE FINAL BAD JOKE–
During her physical examination, a doctor asked a retired woman about her physical activity level.
The woman said she spent 3 days a week, every week in the outdoors.
The doctor asked her, “Doing what?”
“Well, yesterday afternoon was typical; I took a five hour walk, about 7 miles , through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake. I pushed my way through 2 miles of brambles.
I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I barely avoided stepping on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I went to the bathroom behind some big trees.
I ran away from an irate mother bear and then ran away from one angry bull Elk.
The mental stress of it left me shattered.
At the end of it all I drank a scotch and three glasses of wine.
Amazed by the story, the doctor said, “You must be one hell of an outdoor woman!”
“No,” the woman replied, “I’m just a really, really, shitty golfer”.

ROCK ON—We are about to head over to the Port to see Roland Sand’s version of the new Indian. I’ll bring you some images of the event in the Sunday Post, in the Cantina.
We are loading the Peashooter for the show tomorrow.
I’m still working on the story about Larry St. Marie and his bikes and custom cars. I need to pick his brain. I can’t make everything up.
Have a helluva weekend.
