SLEEPY SO-CAL SUNDAY POST FOR JULY 15, 2012

Hey,

Another strange day in paradise. Sin Wu said something to me in bed the other day. She said, “I don’t get it. All the unrelenting bullshit, chest pounding, power-brokering over this dinky little planet in the middle of this massive galaxy.”

About the time the EPA controls our breathing and fines you for farting in public, a volcano will erupt on a small island in the Pacific and spew more crap into the air than all the unregulated cars in China times 1000. Or look what happen to the dinasaurs. One good ice age and they were history.

I thought her comment was beyond interesting. Suddenly there was balance and understanding in the cosmos. Okay, so can we have freedom back?

Let’s hit the news:

TONYA WATTS AND HONEYCHYLD OPENING FOR KISS AND MOTLEY CRUE–Glencoe, Alabama – July 10, 2012 – From this little town deep in the heart of Alabama a star is rising and it’s destined to be as bright as any star in the sky. Actress and Singer/Songwriter Tonya Watts is making her dreams come true in a big way. It’s because she believes that everything is possible if you just are willing to claim them. Already an accomplished actress and acclaimed musician, Tonya continues to land roles in feature films as well as make headlines in the music world. From acting and recording to running her own skin care company, Tonya Watts is popping up all over the place.

Just last month, fliming wrapped on the set of “Finding Harmony” in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, on which Tonya played a character by the name of “Memphis Dane” – a local bar owner and single mother. The movie stars Billy Zane (Titanic) and Alison Eastwood, William Shockley (Robocop, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman), Anna Margaret, Jeffery Patterson, Judy Norton, and many more amazing actors. “Finding Harmony” was written by Judy Norton (Mary Ellen – “The Waltons”) and Executive Produced by Jeffery Patterson. Look for Tonya coming soon to a theater near you.

Meanwhile, Epiphone is set to release a wall-size collage in music stores everywhere which features artists such as Slash, John Lennon, Les Paul, Zakk Wylde, Bonnie Raitt, and of course, Tonya Watts. That’s some mighty fine company Tonya has been priveleged to be a part of. What an honor to be included on such a great project. Epiphone’s slogan is “performance is our passion” and that fits Tonya to a “T” as in T Watts.

Speaking of performance, if you are in Birmingham, Alabama July 31st you can “Rock And Roll All Night” with Tonya and her “Looks That Kill” – obvious allusions to the supergroups KISS and Motley Crue which are headlining this night of rock that Tonya Watts and her band Honeychyld are opening for. How awesome is that! Yes sir, I’m telling you Tonya is popping up all over the place and just keep your eyes and ears open for your next chance to catch her performing live.

Tonya is currently putting together a tour of biker events and if you would like to book Tonya to perform at your next event, go ahead and please send us an email to info@TonyaWatts.com .

Black Hills: EXTRA POLICE TO BE ON HAND FOR HELLS ANGELS RALLY– PIERRE, S.D. — Extra law enforcement officers will be brought in to help patrol the northern Black Hills when the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club holds a major event in Spearfish later this month, a police department official said Thursday.

http://www.twincities.com/ci_21063063/black-hills-extra-police-be-hand-hells-angels

Up to 1,200 people, including 400-600 club members, are expected to attend the club’s annual USA Run in Spearfish July 25-29, Spearfish Police Lt. Curt Jacobs said. The event has been described as the club’s annual convention.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol will have extra troopers in the area, and other law agencies will help patrol the area, Jacobs said.

“We expect them to follow the rules that the citizens do in this area for 365 days out of the year. As long as they follow those rules, there shouldn’t be any issues,” he said.

Jacobs said he and Spearfish Police Chief Pat Rotert met earlier with representatives of the Hells Angels, but they have no valid phone numbers for the club. The club did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.

“The Hells Angels are used to this. Anytime they have their USA Run they know that law enforcement is going to beef up their numbers in that area,” Jacobs said.

“They have their meetings, their barbeques, their picnics and then they head back home,” he added.

Jacobs said the crowd at the Hells Angels event will be small compared with the hundreds of thousands of bikers who attend the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally held in the area each year. This year’s Sturgis rally is set for Aug. 6-12. Christina Steele, a Sturgis city official who also represents the rally, said some of the people who attend the Hells Angels USA Run will likely stay in the area for the Sturgis rally.

“It’s an economic boost anytime you get a group like that,” Steele said.

Steele said officials are not expecting any major problems from the Hells Angels event. The club also held its USA Run in the area a few years ago, she said.

“I don’t recall there being any problems that last time they were all here. They’ll be treated just like anybody else,” Steele said.

Members of the Hells Angels have had run-ins with the law during Sturgis rallies in past years. Two club members involved in a stabbing that left two people with injuries during last year’s rally were convicted of assault charges.

MORE FROM THE AMA ON BANNING CHECKPOINTS--Washington, D.C.: Some 50 U.S. House members have signed onto a bill that would bar the U.S. transportation secretary from providing funds for motorcycle-only checkpoints.

The measure, H.R. 904 authored by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), would prohibit the transportation secretary from providing grants or any funds to a state, county, town, township, Indian tribe, municipality or other local government for use by any program to check safety equipment use or create arbitrary checkpoints for motorcycle riders or passengers.

At the same time, Sensenbrenner and Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.), along with 29 other members of Congress, have sent a letter to the leadership of the House-Senate Surface Transportation Reauthorization Conference Committee requesting the inclusion of language in the conference report that would prohibit the transportation secretary from providing funds for motorcycle-only checkpoints.

Three states have since outlawed motorcycle-only checkpoints — Virginia, North Carolina and New Hampshire — and legislation to prohibit them has been introduced in Illinois, California, Missouri and New Jersey.

More AMA NEWs:

Virginia City, Nev.: A western-style street party will be held on Friday, July 27, in conjunction with the 2012 AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conference. The four-day event, which stages out of nearby Carson City, July 26-29, features seminars, inspirational speakers, great roads, demo rides, product showcases and unmatched camaraderie.

The event features another plus for 2012: the addition of conference emcee Jessica Prokup. A former editor of RoadBike Magazine and director of communications for Discover Today’s Motorcycling, Prokup owns Yellow Devil Gear Exchange in Southern California and serves as the host of the eBay video series “modJOBS 2.” She will take the reins at the evening activities, and also employ her journalistic talents serving as a daytime roving reporter for the event.

Included in the registration fee are seminars, the marketplace and Moto Action Center, the Saturday Night Celebration Party, and a Women’s Health Fair where women can get a variety of health screenings such as mammograms and cholesterol and blood pressure checks. Registrants will also receive a conference T-shirt and gift bag.

Olympia, Wash.: The state Department of Licensing has launched a safety outreach campaign to reduce motorcycle-related injuries and fatalities throughout the summer. The agency’s “Look Twice, Save a Life” campaign is geared to reach millions of motorists and motorcycle owners across the state.

Drivers are reminded that riders can be difficult to see on busy roads because of a motorcycle’s smaller size and profile. Motorists should take extra time to be aware of what is around them. To legally operate a motorcycle on Washington roads, a rider must have a motorcycle endorsement on his or her driver’s license— or the bike could be impounded, even after a simple traffic stop. The licensing agency offers information for unendorsed riders at www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/motorcycles.html.

CBO Releases Study on How Proposed Fuel Economy Standards Would Affect the Highway Trust Fund–

Federal highway and mass transit programs are financed largely by a variety of transportation-related excise taxes. The largest share of the revenues comes from the federal tax on gasoline, including gasoline that is blended with ethanol. Revenues from those taxes are credited to the Highway Trust Fund, and most of the spending for those programs is attributable to that fund. Because the gasoline tax is set as a fixed amount per gallon (currently 18.4 cents), policies that are designed to reduce gasoline consumption would decrease the amounts credited to the fund.

In a study released today, CBO examines how a proposed rule to tighten fuel economy standards for cars, pick-up trucks, and other light-duty vehicles would affect cash flows of the Highway Trust Fund.

What Is The Proposed Rule?
In 2011, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency jointly proposed a rule that would tighten corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards for light-duty vehicles (including cars, sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, minivans, and crossover utility vehicles) manufactured from 2017 through 2025. (The standards for model years 2022 through 2025 are subject to review by the agencies to ensure that they are technologically and economically feasible.) By the end of that period, the proposed standards are expected to raise the average fuel economy of the new-vehicle fleet from 34.1 miles per gallon (mpg)—the average anticipated for 2016 and beyond under current standards—to 49.6 mpg. The proposed rule also would require gradual reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from light-duty vehicles, which would be accomplished primarily through reduced fuel consumption.

What Would Happen to Fuel Consumption and Gasoline Tax Revenues Under the Rule?
The proposed CAFE standards eventually would cause a significant reduction in in fuel consumption by light-duty vehicles. That decrease in fuel consumption would result in a proportionate drop in gasoline tax receipts: CBO estimates that the proposed CAFE standards would gradually lower gasoline tax revenues, eventually causing them to fall by 21 percent. That full effect would not be realized until 2040 because the standards would gradually increase in stringency (only reaching their maximum level in 2025) and because the vehicle fleet changes slowly as older vehicles are replaced with new ones.

This is incredible. They want to force more regulations on automakers, which will cost manufacturers billions, but god forbid the agency won’t make as much money for a couple of years. Did you read that a new tax is being levied on cigarettes, 50 cents a pack. Incredible.

Take The Profit Out Of RED LIGHT CAMERA TICKETS By Fighting Them-9 Investigates: Stepping up efforts to prosecute red light runners

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
WFTV has learned that as attorneys become more successful at defending red light camera ticket cases, the red light camera operators are flying in experts from around the country to testify in the normally low-key traffic courts.??WFTV investigative reporter George Spencer witnessed violations being tossed out left and right when those experts aren’t in the courtroom.??Although red light cameras catch violators on video, very often judges never see the video in court.??”The video’s the best evidence. If they can’t get the video in, there’s no case,” said traffic attorney Adam McGinnis.??

http://www.wftv.com/news/news/stepping-efforts-prosecute-red-light-runners/nPGqp/

WFTV was in an Orange County courtroom as drivers’ attorneys posed challenge after challenge, keeping essential video out of evidence and getting seven red light camera tickets tossed out.??Most of the dismissals were ordered because camera operators are based out of town and weren’t in court to authenticate the video firsthand.??

“The people who can say that, who can testify to that are in Arizona. They don’t want to bring them out,” said traffic attorney Albert Pucylowski.??”And without them in the courtroom, nothing?” asked George Spencer.??

“Nothing,” said Pucylowski.??

So vendors are now responding by sending in representatives from out of town.??While there’s no way to track exactly how often it happens, WFTV did learn that in February a representative from one Arizona-based vendor flew 2,000 miles to testify. And, a company in New York sent an employee to Florida for court. Other vendors have sent representatives from Miami.??

Orange County alone pays its vendor more than $47,000 a month.??But out-of-town witnesses are a change for traffic courts.??”If you have people doing work on these cases in New York or people doing work on these cases in Arizona you have to get them here if you want to convince somebody,” said McGinnis.??Orange County pays its vendor a flat fee rather than a per-ticket fee. That nets the county more than $30,000 a month.??Most vendor contracts require them to assist with red light camera prosecutions, and to pay for any necessary travel.

186 MPH motorcycle ride on Vancouver Island leads to charges– Canadian police are searching for a motorcyclist who they say was involved with a YouTube video showing him riding at 186 mph on a Vancouver Island highway.

by KING 5 News

The Times-Colonist reports police believe 25-year-old Randy George Scott was the driver of a Yamaha sport bike with a video camera mounted behind the windshield.

The video, which has been viewed more than 700,000 times since it was posted in April, shows the motorcycle zipping by and between cars.
Police say Scott was initially suspected, but they did not have enough evidence until now to charge him.

His mother, the owner of the motorcycle, reportedly has been issued nearly $1,500 in traffic tickets in connection with the incident.

NRA Fights for Second Amendment as U.N. Moves Forward on Arms Trade Treaty–
As the U.N. Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty entered its second week of negotiations, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre addressed the conference and made the position of the NRA and American gun owners crystal clear: No treaty that includes civilian arms is acceptable.

Here is the text of the speech:

Mr. President, thank you for this brief opportunity to address this conference. I am Wayne LaPierre and for 21 years now, I have served as Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association of America.

The NRA is the largest and most active firearms rights organization in the world, with four million members who represent 100 million law-abiding Americans who own firearms.

On behalf of those 100 million American gun owners, I am here to announce NRA’s strong opposition to anti-freedom policies that disregard American citizens’ right to self-defense.
No foreign influence has jurisdiction over the freedoms our Founding Fathers guaranteed to us.

We will not stand idly by while international organizations, whether state-based or stateless, attempt to undermine the fundamental liberties that our men and women in uniform have fought so bravely to preserve – and on which our entire American system of government is based.

For six years, the NRA has closely monitored this effort for an Arms Trade Treaty.

We have watched with increasing concern and, one year ago, I delivered to the Preparatory Committee our objections to including civilian arms in the ATT. I said then … and I will repeat now … that the only way to address NRA’s objections is to simply and completely remove civilian firearms from the scope of the treaty.

That is the only solution. On that there will be no compromise. American gun owners will never surrender our Second Amendment freedom. Period.

Our Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment so Americans would never have to live in tyranny.

For any foreign entity to attempt to encroach on that great freedom is offensive to every American who has ever breathed our free air, or who has ever used a firearm to fend off an evil attacker – whether a criminal breaking into their home, or in defense of their family against a tyrant halfway around the world.

Our Second Amendment is freedom’s most valuable, most cherished, most irreplaceable idea. History proves it. When you ignore the right of good people to own firearms to protect their freedom, you become the enablers of future tyrants whose regimes will destroy millions and millions of defenseless lives.

Without apology, the NRA wants no part of any treaty that infringes on the precious right of lawful Americans to keep and bear arms.

Let there be no confusion. Any treaty that includes civilian firearms ownership in its scope will be met with the NRA’s greatest force of opposition.

Mr. President, there are those who believe that merely excluding civilian firearms from the ATT preamble will be sufficient.

Let me state – in the clearest possible terms – that it is not. A preamble to a treaty has no force of law. We know that, and a strong bipartisan majority of the United States Senate and House of Representatives know it as well.

Any Arms Trade Treaty must be adopted by two-thirds of the U.S. Senate, which has 100 members. Already, 58 Senators have objected to any treaty that includes civilian arms, and a majority of the U.S. House of Representatives also opposes such a treaty.

The NRA represents hundreds of millions of Americans who will never surrender our fundamental firearms freedom to international standards, agreements, or consensus.

America will always stand as a symbol of freedom and the overwhelming force of a free, armed citizenry to protect and preserve it.

On behalf of all NRA members and American gun owners, we are here to announce that we will not tolerate any attack – from any entity or organization whatsoever – on our Constitution or our fundamental, individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

–Thank you.

This speech is the culmination of nearly 20 years of NRA involvement in U.N. gun control issues in general, and the push for an Arms Trade Treaty in particular. Until 2009, the U.S. opposed the ATT. The Obama administration changed that position and agreed to move ahead with negotiations.

Proponents of the treaty continue to claim that the treaty will have no impact on American firearms laws. But, as LaPierre explained in his speech to the conference’s “Preparatory Committee” last summer, inclusion of civilian arms would necessitate the imposition of gun registration and owner licensing and vast new record keeping and tracking requirements.

Proposals made at the conference bear out those concerns. Draft language circulated so far contains no recognition of citizens’ rights–only the so-called “right of states.” And while the language assumes that arms cause conflict, there is no admission that arms in the hands of citizens can be used to resist tyranny or even to prevent crime. Various provisions also refer to organized crime, to creation of a “national control system” and to regulation of “end users,” all implying new domestic controls under the guidance of a permanent U.N. bureaucracy.

Perhaps most important on a practical level is that the current draft’s “scope” includes all civilian arms and ammunition. Mexico in particular has advocated this in countless statements to the conference. Mexico even argued briefly that the treaty should include items such as bows, arrows and swords, but quickly backed away from the embarrassing position.

The inclusion of civilian arms in the treaty is a direct threat to the Second Amendment with far-reaching implications. Without the strong opposition of the United States, it is significantly more likely the final treaty will include the firearms that our Second Amendment protects.

AMA faces PR debacle after rescinding Hall of Fame honor for mechanic Clark– NOTABLE MEMBERS, including Grand National Champions, of the AMA Hall of Fame have returned their medals in protest after the organization decided it would not induct famed mechanic Derek “Nobby” Clark into this year’s class after all.

Dick Mann and Dave Despain so far have returned their medals, and Kenny Roberts likely was to follow suit, according to reports.

“I was one of the original committee members involved in organizing the current Hall of Fame. Lately, I have watched this organization slide into mediocrity, apparently from the lack leadership and knowledge of the history of our sport,” Mann stated in a July 12 letter to the association that was picked up by Ed Youngblood’s Motohistory and Cycle News, among other websites.

“Due to Nobby Clark’s contributions to the sport of motorcycles, it is my opinion there is no one more deserving of being inducted in the HOF. Since that is not going to happen, I no longer want to be considered a part of the Hall of Fame.”

Roberts told Cycle News that if Mann’s resignation will prompt him to do the same. “It’s bad that it has to come to this, but what are you going to do. If Nobby [Clark] doesn’t deserve to be in there, nobody does.”

“I believe we Hall of Famers have a special stake in the integrity of the institution and its nominating process,” Despain noted in a July 12 letter to the AMA and posted by Motohistory and other sites. “I have lost all faith in that process and, more importantly, in the individuals who apparently now control it.”

Despain reportedly was returning his Hall of Fame medal to the association this week.

AMA in mid-June announced that Clark would be inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame this year; however, about two weeks later, the AMA issued another press release stating that a balloting mistake was made. Jeffrey Heininger, chairman of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, at the time indicated that Clark’s name should not have been on the ballot.

The June 16 press release issued by the AMA stated that “world championship tuner Derek “Nobby” Clark, whose bikes claimed 17 FIM world titles in multiple displacements from the 1960s through 1980, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as part of the 2012 AMA Legends Weekend at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 16-17.”

In the second press release issued by AMA on July 2, Heininger added that the action to rescind Clark’s award was taken to ensure the Hall of Fame’s integrity, although he did not elaborate.
Speculation in the media was that a past legal issue prevented the AMA from inducting Clark into the Hall of Fame. However, this could not be confirmed. Both press releases on the Clark announcement and eventual retraction were no longer on the AMA Hall of Fame website.
Some members believe that if the action is due to a legal issue, that the AMA is living in a glass house.

“What do we do about multi-time Grand National Champion in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame who spent time in the slammer for drug trafficking? What about the Hall of Famer who went to jail for beating the hell out of a business associate with a baseball bat? What about the two guys — one a Grand National Champion — who had their AMA licenses suspended for fraud and forgery? Or the publisher and entrepreneur who went to Leavenworth for federal mail fraud? And the high AMA official who was convicted of embezzlement?” Youngblood noted in his blog.

Hall of Fame committee member Charles Falco questioned the decision in a July 11 email. “This isn’t about the merits of Nobby Clark, it’s about the HoF election process itself,” he wrote. “Given that there were two weeks between press releases, it appears there wasn’t so much urgency in this specific matter that, say, 24 hours couldn’t have been found to conduct an email poll of the voting members.”

“Just for the record, this particular problem was created completely by AMA members serving in volunteer positions on the AMA Board of Directors and/or the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation Board of Directors,” Hall of Famer Don Emde stated for the record in mid-July on his Facebook page. “As I see it, I don’t think any AMA employee was involved.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM DAVE ZIEN– July 13 (Friday), 2012

Each of us has had our lives euphorically fulfilled by the passion and effectiveness of Tommy G. Thompson. More than any other three Governors combined: Tommy empowered Wisconsin.

Now more than ever before, Washington D.C. needs a powerhouse of guts, power and ability to harness coalitions. When you grab his hand, look into his eyes, feel his energy, you know that God has his hand upon him!

Yep, I was there when Tommy Thompson stopped the 10% property tax increase occurring for 10 years in a row. The WEAC mongers attempted to intimidate us at a Joint Finance Committee sub-committee.

Tommy reduced welfare by more than all other 49 states combined. “Work-fare, Work not Welfare, Bride-fare etc.” were copied often in other states.
The National Rifle Association said that Wisconsin passed the big four, faster than any other state.

1. Pre-emption: No local unit of government can pass a law restricting firearms more than the state.
2. Range Protection.
3. Constitutional Amendments: Right to Keep & Bear Arms.
4. Right to Hunt & Fish: Groundwork laid for the Personal Protection Act/Concealed Carry.

Tommy reflects the Heart and soul of Wisconsin. A God-loving family man, sportsman, biker, and a go-getter – He gets things done!

Vetoing $287 million, tax cuts$16 Billion — and creating 740,000 jobs in a legacy, perhaps never to be done again.

Well, Washington D.C. Bureaucrats and stuffed shirt politicians – get ready to get shook up! Tommy Thompson is bringing his Harley to D.C. – right up to the Capitol’s front steps.

God Bless You

OUTLAWS CLUB RAID– called long time coming U.S. attorney wonders why ‘sophisticated’ enterprise wasn’t busted sooner.

WHILE THE WORLD GOES NUTS—The Bikernet Kingdom will remain a calm nirvana, where freedom is revered, risk is supported, cigarette smoking, any smoking is cool, loud pipes saves lives, noise is tolerated, and modified vehicles are cherished. Oh, and whiskey and redheads are blessed.

Watch next week, as I wrap up the Marlboro Man bike investigation, then we will publish a tech on how to install Samson exhaust, and how Le Pera Seats are made. Also we will study the Victory Judge, and wonder what’s new at the Polaris headquarters.

There are so many features flying at Bikernet, it’s tough to keep up, but it’s summer time and that’s to be expected. Get out there and ride.

Ride Forever,
