SNOWY BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for February 6, 2020

Hey,

I’m going to start to promote my books. Hell, I wrote the bastards and sold out of the first two, then I wrote a few more, but never promoted them. If you haven’t read them, check them out, they’re cheap, and I would love to write another one, based in Deadwood, SD. Unfortunately, I need to sell a few of these bastards to make the whole agonizing process worthwhile.

I also watched the State of the Union Address and took away two very positive points: Freedom, and we are living in the best of times, because of it. In so many words the President was making a very strong point for Freedom. Freedom is everything. Anything else is forced and that quenches freedom.

I must congratulate the President on his acquittal. Can you imagine how tough it would be to get up in the morning and go to work, if you were under such pressure and threats. But he kept getting shit done for the American people.

I kept waiting for the other side to come up with something startling or significant, but it was all about a phone call that produced nothing. I never understood, except from a purely political standpoint.

Let’s hit the news. Maybe now Congress can get something for the people accomplished.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.

THE EASYRIDERS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES– Hi Bandit, Still haven’t received my Easyriders swag I was forced to order, since I had foolishly paid the subscription ahead.

Couple of emails have been sent with one telling me that the swag had been shipped and then after a 2nd inquiry telling me the stuff is on back order. What an operation they have going on?

Saw a first edition of the revamped mag on news stand this week . What a travesty. Don’t think it’ll last long since they’ve alienated their Target market.

The Milwaukee-Eight® 117 powertrain – the most displacement and power offered factory-installed in a Harley-Davidson motorcycle – is exclusive to CVO models.

CVO Road Glide

The CVO Road Glide model is a high-performance Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle equipped to offer the rider outstanding long-range comfort, commanding performance, and a suite of new rider-assist technologies. Base price for the 2020 CVO Road Glide model is $40,999*.

JIMS NEW M-8 Rocker Shaft and Hardware Kit–

In an effort to perfect Milwaukee-Eight engine valve train geometry, while improving durability, JIMS has developed performance rocker shafts and proprietary hardware.

The rocker arm shafts are precision-machined from a low alloy nickel, chromium, molybdenum case- hardened steel. The hardware flats on the end of the shafts are held to a .0005” parallel tolerance, assuring the rocker is seated in the correct position with the pushrod cup and valve stem tip when installed correctly.

JIMS has taken it one step further and also developed a 4130 stud and nut kit to replace the stock hardware used to secure the rocker shafts. Compared to a stock “bolt”, these JIMS manufactured studs allow the technician the assembly finesse required when torquing the rocker arm shafts on the cylinder head during engine assembly.

These shafts not only improve the stock head configuration, but JIMS says “they are a must in a performance application with increased spring pressure.” Available as a set or separately.

FREEDOM SOUGHT IN NEW HAMPSHIRE–
“Freedom” and “choice” were two often-heard words at the public hearing Tuesday, along with the state’s motto “Live Free or Die.”

While Cleaver talked about the economic impact of head injuries and other injuries to motorcyclists, others talked about the negative impact a helmet mandate would have on tourism in New Hampshire and at the Laconia Motorcycle Week Rally, one of three national rallies held each year.

Jennifer Anderson, deputy director of Laconia Motorcycle Week Association, said passing a helmet law would hurt attendance at the annual June rally. She said the rally at Daytona Florida had a drop off in attendance after Florida passed a mandatory helmet law.

“Two-thirds of our visitors come from out-of-state,” Anderson said, “and that has a tremendous impact on the state’s economy.”

State Rep. Ben Baroody, D-Manchester, opposed the bill to honor a friend he made in basic training. The two shared a passion for motorcycles, he said, and promised each other they would ride together sometime in the future. That happened after his friend had taken a year to recover from injuries he suffered, Baroody said, and they rode for two days through Maine and New Hampshire with two of his friends.

When his friend rode away, Baroody said he knew he would never see him again.

“He died at the ripe old age of 24 years old,” Baroody said. “For John and all those who fought, and bled and died around the world for freedom, let’s not take anyone’s freedom away here today.”

Former state Sen. David Boutin, R-Hooksett, also opposed the bill echoing Baroody saying it would take away people’s freedoms.

“People have gone to war to fight for freedom,” he said. “We don’t need a legislative body taking our rights away.”

When he was in the legislature they called these types of bills “Nanny bills,” Boutin said.

Another former state Sen. Bob Letourneau, R-Londonderry, said he has ridden motorcycles all his life and “I’m still here.” After he left the legislature he worked for the Department of Safety on a motorcycle safety program, he said, which has been very successful.

“Helmets don’t save lives,” Letourneau said, “education does.”

Berlin Mayor Paul Grenier also opposed the bill citing the state motto “Live Free or Die.” “If this bill passes,” Grenier said, “this is what you will do to the state’s motto” as he ripped a copy of the bill in two.

Christine Corey of Manchester said wearing a helmet is a matter of choice.

“It is our choice,” she said, “those seven that died in Randolph, that was their choice.”

“My choice,” she said was the leather hat she took off her head. “What is the next bill going to be, you have to be wrapped up like the Michelin Man.”

The committee did not make an immediate recommendation on the bill.

AMA National and Regional News–

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is seeking public input in compiling a list of BLM land that is used for recreation, but has no legal public access or where access is heavily restricted. This effort advances a primary goal of the Dingell Act (S. 47), which was signed into law by President Trump in March 2019. The BLM plans to post its first priority list at its ePlanning website by March 12, then update it every two years for at least the next decade. The public nomination period opened Jan. 31 and closes Feb. 29. Nominations can be made by visiting www.blm.gov/programs/planning-and-nepa/eplanning.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Agriculture is seeking public input to help with the creation of the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program, a new program that will expand the availability of domestic ethanol and biodiesel by providing incentives for the expansion of sales of renewable fuels.

The USDA is also considering infrastructure projects to facilitate increased sales of higher biofuel blends (E15 or higher). The effort builds on the Biofuels Infrastructure Partnership, administered by the USDA from 2016-2019 through state and private partners, to expand the availability of E15 and E85 fuels and infrastructure.

The AMA opposes additional E15 in the marketplace, because it increases the risk of inadvertent misfueling by motorcyclists whose machines are not EPA-certified for fuels containing more than 10 percent ethanol.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Navy has released its final environmental impact statement for the planned expansion of the Fallon Range Training Complex in Nevada, making it available online. The complex is a training area made up of 12,256 square nautical miles of airspace and about 232,000 acres of Navy-managed land. The facility modernization will include:

Renewal of the Navy’s current public land withdrawal

Land range expansion through the additional withdrawal of public lands and the acquisition of nonfederal land
Airspace expansion and modernization
Upgrades to range infrastructure.

The AMA submitted comments on the draft EIS in January, conditionally supporting Alternative 3 as the least disruptive to continued OHV use. However, the AMA also supported local riders, calling for reconnection of cherry-stemmed routes created by the Alternative 3 as originally drafted, and the creation of a special recreation area, codifying OHV use as legitimate, outside the expansion area. The AMA was encouraged by the Navy’s agreement to continue the annual “Vegas to Reno” race and, possibly, other competition events near three sections of the training area.

Also, taking the Sand Springs Range and Fairview Peak-the latter having many roads and OHV trails and the popular earthquake fault destination-out of the training area was a positive for the OHV community. A 30-day waiting period before the Navy can chose a management alternative and implement its criteria ends Feb. 8. A final record of decision is expected in February.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The AMA has joined with a broad spectrum of trail advocacy organizations in a joint project with the U.S. Forest Service to improve both motorized and nonmotorized trails in national forests. Any project that meets national quality standards will qualify for consideration, including:

Clearing and brushing
Tread repair
Structure repair or replacement
Replacement or installation of trail signs
The program originated in a partnership between the Forest Service and the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance.

It is being administered collaboratively with the AMA, the Back Country Horsemen of America and the International Mountain Biking Association, the American Hiking Society and American Trails. Grants are intended for summer use trails, to cover either newly identified or deferred maintenance needs.

Any nonprofit organization is eligible and should have a sponsored volunteer agreement or other agreement with the local Forest Service office for work under these grants. The application deadline if March 30. All forms are available at www.wildernessalliance.org.

SAN FRANCISCO – As the popularity of electric scooters has grown, so has the number of injuries associated with their use, according to a report from JAMA Surgery. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, analyzed U.S. government data on nonfatal injuries treated in emergency rooms.

An Associate Press report on the study said nearly 40,000 broken bones, head injuries, cuts and bruises resulting from scooter accidents were treated in U.S. emergency rooms from 2014 through 2018. The scooter injury rate among the general U.S. population climbed from 6 per 100,000 to 19 per 100,000. Most occurred in riders aged 18 to 34, and most injured riders were not hospitalized.

State News

CHICAGO – Police vowed to crack down on motorcyclists who race and perform stunts on city streets, according to a report in the Sun-Times. Officers plan to use helicopters, license-plate-recognition cameras and sound monitors on Lake Shore Drive, Columbus Drive and Lower Wacker and in the South Loop.

Officials said hundreds of riders take to the streets, interfering with traffic and endangering other drivers. They said the motorcyclists often try to goad police into giving chase.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – State officials have created an Outdoor Recreation Task Force to identify economic and participation opportunities for the state’s outdoor recreation resources. The effort to create the task force came from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Explore Minnesota. The 20-member task force is one of 17 in the country designed to maximize the social and economic benefits of outdoor activity.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio motorcyclists would be allowed to use earplugs while riding under a bill passed by the state legislature and forwarded to Gov. Mike DeWine. It currently is illegal to use headphones or earplugs while riding in Ohio. The use of earplugs can help protect riders’ hearing from the noise caused by wind, loud exhaust notes or other traffic.

The new law (H.B. 129) would still prohibit the use of earphones for listening to music or other entertainment while riding. The definition of earphones does not include speakers or other listening devices that are built into protective headgear.

NELSONVILLE, Ohio – The Wayne National Forest is seeking public review of a draft assessment, the first step in revising the plan that guides management of the forest. The draft assessment outlines ecological, social and economic changes on the forest and surrounding area. Public input will help determine what is important to local communities and the people who use and care about the forest.

The Wayne National Forest is in the assessment phase of a three-phase process, including plan development and implementation and monitoring. The goal is to evaluate relevant current conditions and trends in the forest and southeastern Ohio. Release of the draft assessment begins a 45-day public review period and can be viewed at www.fs.usda.gov/detail/wayne/landmanagement/planning/?cid=fseprd695580.

International News

TOKYO – After hitting another record low in 2019, annual sales of motorcycles in Japan are just a tenth of what they were 30 years ago, according to a VisorDown report. The sales slide is attributed by Motorcycles Data to a government decision to increase sales tax from 8 percent to 10 percent, the impact of Typhoon Hagibis on production and consumers moving away from motorized vehicles and toward pedal power.

KANCHANABURI, Thailand – Two female tourists were knocked off their motorcycle by a cable left hanging across the road at neck level. Christina Serma Gandia, from Spain, who was driving the motorbike, sustained a deep cut in the neck while pillion rider Ana Clara Moncada, from Argentina, suffered minor injuries. Police were investigating the incident to determine which company owns the cable and who is legally responsible for the women’s injuries.

AMA News

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – The AMA congratulated Ricky Brabec on his historic victory at the 2020 Dakar Rally. The Monster Energy Honda Team rider from Hesperia, Calif., is the first American to win the Bike Class at the Dakar Rally. “The AMA is delighted to congratulate Ricky Brabec on his phenomenal performance at this year’s Dakar Rally,” AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman said. “Ricky has earned his place in American motorcycling history and we are pleased at his success as America’s first Dakar champion.”

Brabec claimed his victory with both speed and consistency. He won two of the event’s 12 stages and did not relinquish the lead after claiming it on Day Three. His margin of victory was 16 minutes, 26 seconds over Husqvarna rider Pablo Quintanilla of Chile. It was Brabec’s eighth time competing at the Dakar Rally.

Brabec’s victory also marked Honda’s first triumph in the rally’s Bike Class in more than 30 years. Saudi Arabia played host to the 2020 edition of the rally, which featured a 5,000 kilometer course over mostly sandy terrain. The grueling annual off-road competition first took place in 1978-1979 and has been held annually since then, except for 2008. Casey Currie became the first American to win Dakar on four wheels, driving a Can-Am side-by-side to victory.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -AMA member Kevin Morris of Montville, N.J., won the 2019 AMA Classic Grand Tour, scoring 105 locations where the letters A-M-A appeared in sequence on a sign. The 2019 AMA Classic Grand Tour celebrated the 95th anniversary of the American Motorcyclist Association, which was founded in 1924. Previous AMA Classic Grand Tours were in 2009 and 2003.

AMA members registered to participate in the tour, which required riders to find signs-including business signs, road signs, street signs and more-with the letters A-M-A in sequence, then photograph their motorcycles and their grand tour flag with the sign. Rules required the signs to be in the United States. The AMA-sanctioned event ran from April 1 through Nov. 1.

Tiny Strider Customs Steal the Show at Mecum Las Vegas--Being in the room during a live auction – especially one all about motorcycles and packed with like-minded people – is a thrilling happening. The energy is palpable, the buzz is real, and it’s no wonder people catch the bidding bug.

And so, it was at the Mecum Auction held at Southpoint Casino in Las Vegas. The event went on all week from January 20 to 26 but my nerve-wracking day was January 24th. That’s when 3 Tiny Custom Striders, originally revealed to the riding public at the Flying Piston Builders Breakfast at the Buffalo Chip last August, rolled across the auction block.

Motorcyclist Advisory Council Reauthorization Act Introduced in the Senate–

Yesterday, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) introduced S. 3249, the Motorcyclist Advisory Council Reauthorization Act. The bipartisan legislation aims to define the membership seats of the Motorcyclist Advisory Council (MAC), ensure more national motorcycle organizations are represented and authorizes the council for six years.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) would like to thank the U.S. Senate for joining their colleagues in the House of Representatives for continuing to support the issues that are important to the motorcyclists of this country.

The legislation is the companion bill to H.R. 5234 introduced in late November in the House of Representatives by Reps. Mike Gallagher (WI-R), Chris Pappas (NH-D), Harley Rouda (CA-D), and Troy Balderson (OH-R).

“It is critical that motorcyclists be considered in infrastructure planning,” said MRF Vice President Jay Jackson. “The Motorcyclist Advisory Council provides this forum. The MRF is excited to have the opportunity to present to the MAC, the issues of concern from riders across the country.”

This legislation clarifies the membership of the MAC which now will include five highway engineering experts from state or local governments, one state or local traffic safety engineer who is a motorcyclist, one roadway safety data expert on crash testing and analysis, and one representative from each of the following groups: a national association of state transportation officials, a national motorcyclist foundation, a national motorcyclist association, a national motorcycle manufacturing association, and a national safety organization.

“Wisconsin has a rich history with motorcycles and we know it’s crucial to get input from the motorcycle community about how to keep roads safe and enjoyable for all,” said Sen. Johnson. “Government needs to be responsive, efficient and effective. Making sure motorcyclists have a voice and a seat at the table is beneficial for everyone.”

The MAC will advise the Secretary of Transportation, the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration on transportation issues of concern to motorcyclists, including barrier design; road design, construction, and maintenance practices; and the architecture and implementation of intelligent transportation system technologies.

“There’s no better way to see all that Michigan has to offer than by riding a motorcycle,” said Senator Peters., co-chair of the bipartisan Senate Motorcycle Caucus. “As a motorcycle owner and rider, I’m proud to introduce bipartisan legislation to better give riders and manufacturers a voice on decisions impacting them.”

Tire Voucher will be Awarded to Riders who Set a New Absolute Motorcycle Track Record with Pirelli Race Compound Tires

Pirelli Tire North America announced today, in collaboration with their road race vendors, the continuation of the Pirelli Nation Track Record Bounty Program in 2020. The bounty – issued in the form of a tire voucher – is available to riders who set a new absolute motorcycle track record on Pirelli race compound tires during a 2020 sanctioned event. Following the success of 2019 that saw seven bounties awarded, Pirelli continues to strengthen its efforts as a way to give back to racers nationwide.

“The program has had great success during the course of the past several years,” said Oscar Solis, road racing manager, Pirelli. “Pirelli remains committed to the grassroots level of racing by rewarding racers for their accomplishments when using Pirelli racing compounds. We’re continuously improving our tire range, and with new size offerings for this year, it will only increase the chance for racers to set new absolute motorcycle track records by going even faster and doing so more consistently.”

In 2019, Pirelli-equipped riders relied on the performance of the DIABLO™ Superbike slicks to claim a total of seven absolute motorcycle track records across the nation. As the official tire supplier for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, Pirelli’s research and development team has spent countless hours fine-tuning its race compound tires at the highest level and to ensure they are capable of performing in all conditions. The World Superbike-derived technology will provide riders with two new sizes for 2020, which include the 125/70-17 front and 200/65-17 rear sizes.

“It’s great to see Pirelli bring back the Pirelli Nation Track Record Bounty Program for 2020,” said Adam Robarts, professional racer. “I’ve been fortunate enough to capture a handful of track records the past several seasons and this keeps me hungry to keep improving myself and go get some more. I’m really anxious to get some time on the new DIABLO™ Superbike sizes and hope to make this my best year yet!”

Adam Robarts led the way for Pirelli-equipped riders in 2019, earning an impressive three absolute motorcycle track record bounties aboard his BMW S 1000 RR. His track records took place at The Ridge Motorsports Park, Pacific Raceway, and Mission Raceway park.

This bounty is valid for qualifying riders at race-sanctioned events, including (but not exclusive to) AFM, ASRA, ASMA, CCS, CMRA, CVMA, CRA, FMRRA, MRA, MCRA, OMRRA, SMRI, USBA, WMRRA and WERA.

To qualify for a Pirelli track record bounty:

· The rider and bike must be using Pirelli racing compound front and rear tires when the record is broken

· The race club must verify the new absolute motorcycle track record and Pirelli tire use. Pirelli and the vendor will confirm the new record with said race official

· If the lap is broken more than once at a specific race-sanctioned event, the last and fastest record will get the “bounty” (capped at one “bounty” per race event weekend)

· Each track layout limits the “bounty” by two times per year for each rider

· Track days and open practice days are not eligible for riders to claim the “bounty”

· The “bounty” is limited to the first 10 riders to qualify in 2020

* Any questions need to be directed to your local Pirelli trackside vendor

LATEST FIND FROM THE NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM–The man credited with being the first to invent the term “motor cycle” was Charles H. Metz. He used the term in an 1899 advertisement for his Orient, which is also considered by some as America’s first mass-production motor powered cycle.

The 1910 Marsh-Metz was a traditional belt drive machine with sprung seat and leaf-spring leading link fork. Polished engine cases and liberal use of nickel plating and red paint make it gleam. Sophisticated rod and bell-crank controls are similar to what Indian used early on.

The Massachusetts bicycle maker Waltham Manufacturing Company was founded in 1893 by Charles H. Metz. The name of his first machine…

BANDIT’S BEDROLL TESTIMONIAL--Hey Keith aka Bandit,

I just received the bed roll today and I must say it’s exactly what I was looking for … something for a 2-3 day trip. One feature I was not aware of but like is the Velcro straps for the handlebars. Damn, you thought of everything.

I won’t really be using it until the weather gets warmer but I had to do a little mock up to check it out. Can’t wait to use it on the road.

Thanks brother,
–Kent.

P.S. Thank you for the extra swag that came with it. Looking forward to reading your book.

I’ve had many close calls in 50 years of riding, I’m one of those hit-the-gas guys, I’m not sure why! My only advice is ride within your sight and DONT swerve to avoid a deer, you’ll likely lose control completely and hit guardrail or a tree.

HARLEY LEGAL BATTLE RESOLVED–Three years ago Miss Worcester Diner owner Kim Kniskern asked local artist Tony Freitas to paint the H-D logo in honour of their many customers who rode the iconic American motorcycle.

But when Harley was recently alerted to the breach of their valuable trademark, they sent a cease-and-desist letter:

While Harley-Davidson truly appreciates your enthusiasm for the brand… we often run into enthusiasts such as yourself who utilize our marks in commercial endeavours, however, by using our trademark on the exterior, public facing portion of your business, you have created the impression that there is an affiliation or other relationship with Harley-Davidson where no such relationship exists.

Kim fought back with a petition that attracted almost 4300 signatures in a few days including many from Australia after our article last week.

However, they have now reached an agreement that Sheldon’s Harley-Davidson in Auburn sponsors the sign and add their shop logo.

(Obviously the sign controversy caused some angst at the local dealership!)

Kim is pictured above with Tony and Chad Sheldon.

“I’ve learned a lot these last few days and I’m very blessed to have so many people on my side.

“My whole community was just so in support of me and that humbles me no end.

“As soon as the weather gets a little warmer Tony will be getting up there to paint Sheldon’s logo.”

Tony said he did not believe they were doing anything wrong.

“I deal with copyright laws all day every day and the law actually states … that I can produce any logo and use it and sell it as long as it’s done one at a time by hand and sold privately,” he says.

But he admitted it was a “grey area” being displayed on a building.

Anyway, it seems a good result has been achieved with level heads after some hostile reaction from Harley riders.

Kim and Tony should consider themselves lucky to have won against the powerful corporate giant.

In the late 1990s they even tried to trademark their distinctive “potato-potato” exhaust noise. It failed in US courts.

NEW FROM WOLFGANG PUBLISHING–
Harley-Davidson FXR Bible

Respected author Timothy Remus has a new book available – the FXR Bible.
Though the Harley-Davidson FXR may have been missing from dealerships for over twenty years, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lively interest in the bike – one that many people think is one of, if not the best machine Harley ever made.

If the number of clubs and Facebook sites dedicated to the FXR is any indication, the old bike is not only alive and well, but back in vogue.

Casual riders and hard core FXR enthusiasts will find the book both entertaining and informative. The front section includes a series of short chapters: history, year-by-year changes, the FXR frame, electrical issues, drivetrain options (i.e. Twin Cam), and planning a complete build.

The heart of the book is a series of detailed features on a wide variety of mostly modified FXRs. Starting with the Shovelheads, everything is here from Café models to asphalt ripping Twin Cam powered race bikes, to over-the-top FXRTs. And yes, there are a few Dynas as well.

Bill Would Make Helmets Optional For Most Motorcyclists In Maryland–
Helmets would no longer be mandatory for most motorcycle riders in Maryland under a bill expected to be heard in a state Senate committee Tuesday.

Senate bill 237 would make motorcyclists and their passengers exempt from wearing a helmet if the motorcycle operator is 21 or older, has at least two years of riding experience and has completed an approved safety course.

The legislation, in its current language, has been introduced in each session of the General Assembly since 2016 but has failed to advance out of committee each session. Last session, the bill failed to advance out of the Senate’s Judicial Proceedings committee.

The bill’s lead sponsor, Sen. Michael Hough, R-Frederick and Carroll counties, told Capital News Service before the hearing that he is hopeful the bill can advance to a vote on the Senate floor. Hough noted the bill is also supported by the chair of the Judicial Proceedings Committee, Sen. William “Will” Smith Jr., D-Montgomery.

Although he said he doesn’t ride a motorcycle, Hough said he agrees with supporters of the legislation who argue that it should be the rider’s choice to wear a helmet, and that helmets do not prevent motorcycle crashes.

“It’s not the role of government to protect you from yourself. The role of government is to protect you from doing harm to others,” Hough said. “As an adult in this country, you should have the freedom to make decisions like this if you want.”

In the past, the legislation has been opposed by AAA Mid-Atlantic, the Maryland Trauma Center Network, the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems and the Maryland Association of County Health Officers, among others.

The American Motorcycle Association, the country’s largest motorcycle rights advocacy group, supports voluntary use of helmets.

“Some view the helmet solely as a mechanical safety device, similar to a seat belt,” according to a position statement on the group’s website. “Many motorcyclists view the helmet as an accessory of personal apparel, and its use or non-use is connected with a chosen lifestyle and their right as adults to make their own decisions.”

Bob Spanburgh, executive director at ABATE of Maryland — the state’s largest motorcycle advocacy group — told Capital News Service before the hearing that his organization isn’t taking a position on wearing a helmet, but he said motorcyclists should get to choose for themselves.

“It’s our guiding principle,” Spanburgh said. “We don’t advocate for not wearing helmets, we advocate for the ability to choose whether we want to wear them or not.”

Spanburgh said his group has also advocated for other motorcycle-related legislation, including bills that would have allowed lane-splitting and would have prohibited residents from blowing yard waste into the street — creating potentially dangerous conditions for riders.

Spanurgh said sometimes motorcyclists’ rights can become an afterthought for some people.

“I don’t think it’s intentional,” he said. “If you don’t ride, I don’t think you really think about it.”

Maryland’s current motorcycle helmet requirement — which requires all riders and passengers to wear the protective headgear — became law on Oct. 1, 1992.

According to a legislative analysis of the bill, as of December, 19 states and Washington, D.C., require all motorcyclists to wear helmets, while 28 states require only certain riders to wear helmets.

Michigan, Pennsylvania and Texas have exemptions for riders similar to those proposed in the Maryland legislation, according to the analysis.

If the legislation passes, Spanburgh said, he thinks about half of the state’s riders will continue to wear helmets. Spanburgh, who said he has been riding on the streets since 1983, probably won’t be one of them.

“Honestly, I would more frequently not wear one than wear one,” he said.

BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS OPEN ODD HOURS–Salesmanship

Everyone went into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship.

Little Sally led off. “I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30” she said proudly. “My sales approach was to appeal to the customer’s civic spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success.”

“Very good”, said the teacher.

Little Debbie was next. “I sold magazines,” she said. “I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events.”

“Very good, Debbie”, said the teacher.

Eventually, it was Little Johnny’s turn. The teacher held he breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher’s desk.

“$2,467,” he said.

“$2,467!” cried the teacher, “What in the world were you selling?”

“Toothbrushes”, said Little Johnny.

“Toothbrushes”, echoed the teacher. “How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?”

I found the busiest corner in town”, said Little Johnny. “I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample.” They all said the same thing; “Hey, this tastes like dog poop!

I would say, “It is dog poop. Wanna buy a toothbrush?”

“I used the Bernie Sanders method of giving you some crap, dressing it up so it looks good, telling you it’s free, and then making you pay to get the bad taste out of your mouth.”

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT—It’s just too early to be rolling through the news for the first time. I’m way ahead of schedule, but something always interrupts progress. I also can’t believe how rapidly I peel through my days here in Deadwood. There’s always something to do.

Hell, I see more bros here than I saw in Los Angeles.

I’m inspired to write. I want to write a life and times, and another Cantina Episode. Hell, I would like to start a book outline. Ya, never know.

I’m hoping they’ll rebuild a Deadwood Chinatown. They started to dig and discovered artifacts. Check out our historic article on Deadwood.

It’s all part of the wild adventure of life. Let’s make the most of it.

Ride fast and free, forever!
