Soldering, and being able to make up a neat jumper wire, are necessary skills for anyone building a bike. After stripping off the insulation the first step is a dip in some non-acid flux.
Next, slide a small piece of shrink wrap onto the wire, followed by the connector.
Using a good crimp tool, crimp the connector onto the wire.
By touching the hot iron to the solder, a small amount of the solder is melted and drawn up onto the soldering iron’s tip. The next step is to touch the tip of the iron…
…up against the connector. You don’t want to just drop solder on the connector. It needs to get hot enough that solder is drawn down into the connection. It must flow. Sometimes I tin the wire with solder then slip it into the connection. That will insure the solder reaches all the right places. Before you slide shrink wrap over the connection, wipe it clean with alcohol to prevent the flux from corroding the wire further.
Slide the shrink wrap up over the connection, apply heat and bingo, you have a neat, insulated and durable connection. For more on soldering wires together check the King Report when we installed 18-inch apes.–Bandit
