S&S Square Motor Chance of a Lifetime

Don’t Miss Out…Special Price Ends Soon!

The Bikernet Service Engineers caught sight of the following special S&S engine offer and we were immediately intrigued, primarily because of the square motor, short stroke configuration. Check it out and get a behind the scenes view of the S&S team building a V111 engine:

The special promotion on the S V111 and T111 engines comes to a close at the end of September, so now’s the time to get one on order. Take advantage of the special prices on V111 and T111 engines before it’s too late.

Get your order in before October 1, 2010 and save up to $1145.00!If you’re considering an engine replacement, or if you plan to build a custom bike, you can save some serious cash if you place an order for an S 111 cubic inch engine before the end of September 2010. It’s Hip To Be Square! The 111’s are “square” engines. That means that the bore and stroke are equal at 4-1/8″ each. S&S has historically promoted longer stroke engines for greater performance, but these engines were designed as performance/touring power plants.

Touring engines are designed for more torque than horsepower, but with 111 cubic inches there is plenty of both. The relatively short 4-1/8″ stroke of the S V111 engine keeps piston speed lower, at the same rpm than the 4-1/4″ stroke of the stock 80 cubic inch Harley-Davidson® Evolution® engine, that it was designed to replace.

Lower piston speed contributes to engine longevity, reduced vibration, and less noise. The giant 4-1/8″ bore produces the robust 111 cubic inch displacement. And as we all know, that there is no replacement for displacement!

The V111 is a great all around performance/touring engine for carbureted 1984-’99 Harley-Davidson® big twins and it’s a great choice for custom bikes built with this popular chassis style. Available in natural or black wrinkle powder coat finish. Click on the S&S banners at top and bottom for more information.

The T111 fits 1999-’06 Harley-Davidson big twins except 2006 Dyna® models, and is available for carbureted and fuel injected motorcycles with your choice of silver or black wrinkle powder-coat finish.

You Snooze, You Lose!Don’t delay because after 9-30-10 you’re gonna pay more! See your local S&S dealer to get an S V111 or T111 for yourself. Check the prices at the end of the article

The “square motor” configuration is attractive from several perspectives.

First the relatively short stroke reduces piston speed at any given rpm compared to a longer stroke engine. The shorter stroke also allows the engine to rev higher without tearing itself apart. There are much less severe inertial loads in a shorter stroke engine due to the lower piston speed. If the connecting rod length is equal in both engines, the short stroke engine will have a smaller rod angle. That will result in less lateral loading of the piston during the power stroke. That reduces wear and makes the engine last longer.

The fact that the bore of a square engine is relatively large allows for a fairly high displacement. The more air and gas you can suck into the engine, the bigger the bang when you light it off! Also, with a larger area on the top of the piston, there will be more force exerted on the connecting rod at any give cylinder pressure than there will be with a smaller bore size. Look at it this way, pressure is expressed in pounds per square inch, and if you have more square inches, you get more pounds of force.

Let’s you do the math. A typical engine might have 500 psi of cylinder pressure under fairly normal operation. We’ll just use that number to show how it works. A stock Harley-Davidson Evolution engine has bore size of approximately 3.500 inches, so the piston dome area is 9.26 square inches. By multiplying pressure by area, 500 lb/in2 X 9.26, In2 = 4630 lb of force on the connecting rod for 3.500 bore. In a 4.000 bore engine like the V111, the piston dome area is 12.56 inches, or 500 pounds per square inch X or 12.56 square inches = 6280 lb of force. It’s more. It’s got to be better!

It should be mentioned that a square motor needs good flowing cylinder heads to make power at higher rpm, but since the S&S V111 and T111 engines have S&S cylinder heads, life is good.

S&S V111 Engine

The new V111 engine is designed for torque more than top end horsepower. The short 41/8″ stroke is equal to the large 41/8″ bore, which minimizes vibration. The relatively low lift S&S 585 cam and the single coil Sidewinder® valve springs minimize valve train noise. A smooth, quiet, torquey engine is ideal for touring applications where vibration and noise can get old on a long ride, and a loaded bagger pulling a trailer can overtax a stock engine.

We reached out to Eric Bennett at Bennett’s performance for his take on the deal. “This configuration has a shorter stroke than factory bikes for enhanced reliability,” said Eric. “The same configuration ads balance to an engine. S&S makes a 4-by-4 Sportster engine that’s fantastic. Shorter stroke motors rev quicker and can handle much higher rpms in a pushrod based motor. Plus the reduced piston speed will make ’em last.”

The S&S T111

The new T111 is a powerful yet quiet engine perfect for touring riders. A practical stroke, less aggressive touring cam, and nearly silent valve train create a torquey, smooth power band – making your bike a pleasure to ride for long distances. Lower cost and superior engine life.

Fitment

The T111 will only fit in place of 1999-’05 fuel injected engines and 1999-’06 carbureted engines
