St. Patty’s Day Thursday News for March 17, 2011

Hey,

Another crazy day in paradise. I’m going to send a hundred bucks to the American Red Cross to support the Japanese recovery. I know it’s a harrowing experience, but like Americans, the resilient Japanese will rebuild like never before.

Reports are coming in that the economy is coming around, unemployment has dropped a tad. Then, of course there’s the doom and gloom purveyors. If only our bullshit government would stand up, be honest, and deal with the issues instead of their competitive crap, we’d have a shot as some real change and improvements.

But I keep the faith. We can do anything, if we put our hearts and minds behind it. Let’s hit the news, then I’ll bring you a list of all the content flying at Bikernet:

STD IS BACK–For a couple of years there has been a hole in the industry when STD, the engine case, head, and performance product manufacturer, went missing. I won’t roll into the sordid history since Lou passed and the company was bought by an Australian concern. But one man kept his eye on the operation, Billy Mc Cahill from Spyke, and Compu-fire. He is also a partner with Rusty at Illusion Cycles.

Billy finally saw an opportunity to pull STD back together, but of course, there were legal battles around the name, the blue prints, and tooling. Just today, Billy called after a long struggle to make STD whole again, to tell Bikernet that STD is back and will be on display at the CCI show this weekend.

One of Billy’s first priorities was to fill the Jammer’s Pandemonium orders and keep the Pan engines alive through Custom Chrome. I witnessed the final stages of the headwork at Branch Okeefe’s flowmetrics shop in Long Beach.

Billy promised a totally American Made STD product line, and we will bring you product reports in the near future. If you are attending the Custom Chrome show this weekend stop by the Spyke/Compu-Fire booth to congratulate the gang. Watch for an update from the CCI show in the Sunday Post.

DAYTONA BIKER SPENDING BOOSTING BOTTOM LINES– This time of year, most people hear only the rumble of motorcycles echoing along the highways and byways, but Flagler County businesses are hearing the jingle-jangle of the cash register.

While Bike Week in Flagler County doesn’t match the size and scope of the event in Volusia County, it’s still an important piece of the economic puzzle here.

“It’s a huge boost this time of year,” said Doug Baxter, president of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates. “We’re seeing a lot more bikers coming from the hustle and bustle of

Daytona.”

Baxter said on a recent visit to Flagler Beach he was surprised at the number of visitors at the beach.

“There was a lot of activity at the beach,” he said.

In addition, the county’s campgrounds and hotels are reporting brisk business as well, according to a survey done by Peggy Heiser, vice president of tourism development at the Chamber.

“The campgrounds and hotels are seeing an uptick from last year,” Baxter said. “That is very encouraging.”

For John Seibel, owner of Thunder Gulch campground in Bunnell, this year’s Bike Week is an improvement from 2009.

“Our reservations are far better than they were last year at this time,” he said. “It makes us feel we’re going to have a better Bike Week.”

Seibel said he planned more activities at the campground and the Black Cloud Saloon to boost business even more.

“My view was if I am going to stay in my level of business, I have to get a bigger piece of the market,” he said.

While Seibel is encouraged by the increase in activity, he said he does not expect Bike Week to ever be as big as it was a few years ago.

“At the height we were bringing upwards of 600,000 bikers into the Daytona Beach area,” he said. “I think it has peaked.”

Seibel said the average age of motorcycle riders is rising and natural attrition will reduce the Bike Week crowds. And economic factors also have taken their toll on Bike Week numbers.

“I think overall the economy will never, ever be again like it once was,” Seibel said. “I think we are all going to lead a lower lifestyle, with less spent on entertainment and vacations.”

BIKERNET BLACK MARKET BOOK OF THE WEEK, Sturgis Anniversary Book on Sale–Sturgis may be months away, but this Anniversary book, photographed during the 2010 rally, will bring back memories of Sturgis trips past and help you plan for future rides to that special little town in South Dakota.

The Sturgis 70th Anniversary book starts with history. The history of the hills, and the history of the earliest inhabitants. Next comes the history of the event itself – how a camp out in the back yard of the local Indian Motorcycle dealer grew into an event that attracts upwards of half a million motorcycle riders each year.

More than just a biker party, Sturgis includes hundreds of events within the event. This photo-intensive section includes images from the numerous bike shows and concerts.

The heart of Sturgis is Main Street. Another photo intensive section, these images highlight the best tattoos, the sexiest bar tenders and the energy that makes Main Street a must-see.

But what makes Sturgis the ideal place for a biker bash isn’t the parties, it’s the riding – the two lane highways that twist and turn through the Black Hills and across the rolling prairie. Maps, photos and first-person stories, give both old and new riders someplace to go.

Right now the place to go is the check out page, because these Sturgis 70th Anniversary books are available this week for $17.95 from Bikernet, with free shipping to all US addresses.

BIKERNET PROSTITUTION TIPS–A redneck was walking home late at night and sees a woman in the shadows.

“Twenty dollars”, she whispers.

Bubba had never been with a hooker before, but decides what the heck, it’s only twenty bucks, so they hide in the bushes.

They’re in there for only a minute when all of a sudden a light flashes on them.

It’s a police officer.

“What’s going on here people?”, asks the officer.

“I’m making love to my wife!”, Bubba answers sounding annoyed.

“Oh, I’m sorry”, says the cop, “I didn’t know.”

Bubba says, “Well, neither did I, till ya shined that light in her face…”

OFFICIAL BIKERNET ARTIST SURVIVES THE NARROWS–I live within sight of what’s commonly known as Second Narrows Bridge. It’s full official name is The Second Narrows Ironworkers Memorial Bridge in honor of the nineteen men who lost their lives
when it collapsed during construction in 1958. The bridge is still unforgiving and must always be approached with extreme caution.  On four separate occasions now I’ve been reminded of it’s legacy when biking over it. This time a car in front of me lost a rear wheel due to a broken axle. As the car scrapped, smoked, screeched and sparked to a grinding halt at the bottom of the off ramp the loose wheel on the tip of it’s axle came hissing back up the bridge like the Top From Hell….straight at me! There was no time to think. I leaned the Sporty hard to the left, the concrete gouging beast went to the right. Lucky guess…that time.

BIKERNET T&A TIP FOR THE MEN–A balding, white haired bearded biker in Daytona Beach Florida, walked into a jewelry store on Friday evening of Bike Week with a beautiful much younger gal at his side.
He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring.

The biker said, ‘No, I’d like to see something more special.’

At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. ‘Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000 the jeweler said. The lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old biker seeing this said, ‘We’ll take it.’

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the biker stated, ‘by check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I’ll pick the ring up Monday afternoon.’

On Monday morning, the jeweler angrily phoned the old biker and said ‘There’s no money in that account.’

‘I know,’ said the old biker’ But let me tell you about MY GREAT WEEKEND!’

THE BRANCH OKEEFE EVO PERFORMANCE FORMULA–This is the year of the Evo and we’re looking at several options for stock engines and for rebuilds. We have three touring models coming together. They are all 80-inchers.

I’m running and brand new factory plain Evo engine with the Andrews EV-27 cam and Andrews chrome-moly adjustable pushrods for less flex, a new cam bearing and the Branch flowed stock heads, for 8.9:1 compression, 78 CC Branch-flowed chambers, and 75-80 horses at 2,600 rpms. We are working with the Branch Flowmetrics crew, which is now Branch Okeefe. They are located next door to Bennett’s performance.

The next step is the EV-51 cam and additional head-work and shaved heads for a 10:1 compression and 85 horses at the same rpms. And finally, a customer can run with an EV-59 Andrews came and 10.5:1 compression and 90-95 horses. Not bad for never taking the barrels off.

“I like rpms,” John Okeefe said, “and the new ignitions allow these engines to burn more fuel and bring out the horses.”

We will show you our mods in an upcoming tech tip with Bennett’s Performance, plus the good Dr. Hamster is having Bennett’s run through his ’89 Evo with over 200,000 miles on the clock. You will see how Bennett’s rebuilds an Evo, the components he recommends and any performance modifications.

BIKERNET FAMILY COUNSELING–  Since the wife is eight months into her pregnancy, the husband has to sleep on the floor to avoid any regrettable mistake, which might happen pretty easily, for he has been desperate for quite a while now… Just before lying down on the bed, she glances at him and sees the poor guy curls up on the floor, eyes stare widely into the empty air, filled with hopeless desire…

Feeling sorry for her husband, she opens the top drawer of the cabinet, takes out a fifty dollar bill, and gives it to him: – Awww, my honey is so depressed… here, take this and go to the woman next door, she will let you sleep with her tonight… and remember that this happens only once… ok?… don’t think about it again.

The husband rolls his eyes in disbelief, but afraid that she may change her mind, he grabs the money and leaves quickly.
A few minutes later, he returns, hands the bill back to the wife and says with much disappointment: She said this is not enough, she wants sixty…

The wife’s face slowly turns red with anger: -Damn that bitch… when she was pregnant and her husband came over here… I only charged him fifty…

UNCLE MONKEY ON INCREASED TECHNOLOGY, THE GOOD SIDE–My nephew has been trying to sell his machine for a while now, so it don’t come as much of a surprise when I saw it parked a couple blocks away from my work. Later that night as I settled into my nightly routine of answering emails and I decided to kill a little time on one of the popular social networks.
As I glanced over peoples witty wisdoms, ignored their cries for help regarding their farm, their lost kingdom, join the mafia; I stumbled across my nephew’s post. The post was simply that someone had stolen his bike that day. I shot him a quick message, grabbed my jacket and headed out the door barely beating the cops he called to the garage only three minutes away. Within an hour the cities finest had the perps rounded up in a cell safely out of our arms reach awaiting their time in front of the judge.

We often knock modern technology. For every step forward it seems we take a step back. The more connected we are, we are more distracted, less interactive with those in front of us, preoccupied with might be going on somewhere else that we might be missing out on. But every once and a while like in the case of my nephews bike technology makes us take stock of it and awe at the power of it. In less then three minutes of me reading his post his bike was recovered. Within the hour it took him to cover the eighty miles between us, the cops had traced the perps pay-as-u-go cell number and used it to triangulate their hideout location.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen technology at work. When a friend’s Silverado pick up was stolen he called the cops. While on the phone he mentioned he had On-Star. As the Officer finished the report, On-Star located the truck, waited until a patrol units moved in behind, killed the motor and locked the perps in the truck so they couldn’t flee. All before the Officer had finished taking my friend’s statement.

The world is small place thanks to technology. As I sit in the comfort of my home in Moose Jaw my words, thoughts and opinions reach out to you wherever you may be. Information is passing back and forth at the speed of light. In the end all that can be said is “Don’t mess with a man’s horse.”

NHTSA Requests Motorcycle Safety Money–Administrator David Strickland of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has submitted his 2012 budget request to the Appropriations Committees. One item in particular jumped off the page when the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) examined the $860 million request. Section 3011, Motorcycle Safety Grants, includes a $7 million ask that specifically adds the promotion of DOT compliant helmet use to the fund.

In the past, the motorcycle safety grant program has solely put money toward two areas: teaching people to ride motorcycles and educating the rest of the motoring public to look for motorcycles while driving. Diluting this already small grant program to include helmet use promotion will certainly diminish the effectiveness of the two existing programs.

In a recent Senate hearing, Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was asked by Senator Lautenberg (D-NJ) to include a mandatory helmet law in his budget request. LaHood responded, “This administration believes that is a State issue.” Apparently Strickland did not get that information.

It is troubling that NHTSA, whose mantra should be “crash avoidance,” continues to promote “safer crashing.” The MRF believes that the best crash is the one that doesn’t happen. The MRF will keep you updated on this important issue.

Congressional Recess Period

Next week is the March Congressional recess period. Contact your US Senators and Representatives to attend a town hall meeting or face-to-face constituent meeting. Let them know you are not happy with NHTSA’s requests and actions. Do not hesitate to contact the MRF should you need talking points or help scheduling a meeting.

BEST VIDEO OF THE MONTH–A Bikernet reader didn’t want to lose this one, so we recovered it again recently from another Bikernet reader. It’s a classic.

TEAM CATAVOLT AIMING FOR A RECORD–A 21-year-old Australian motorcycle rider is about to attempt something that, a few years ago, was only dreamt of – becoming the fastest man on the planet on an electric motorcycle.

Brisbane-rider Jake Dolan, who is already carving a name for himself in Australian 600cc Superstock racing, will open up the electric motorcycle and aim for 200 mph or 322 kph at Lake Gairdner’s 21st annual Speedweek, in South Australia beginning on March 21.

The bike Jake will ride is based on a Daelim 250cc road bike, but has been re-built by Newcastle, NSW, bike builder Jon Eggenhuizen and fitted with four electric engines producing over 180kW, making it the most powerful electric bike in the world.

The current record, of 174mph, was set at the American Speedweek event held at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah last year.
Jake said: “Our bike has more power than the record breaker, and I am confident that we will break the 200mph barrier.

“I am keen to set another World Record to add to my scooter racing achievement and the thought of being the first to do 200 mph (322 kph) on an electric motorcycle is damn exciting.

“This growing sector of motorsport is very topical and to be known as the world’s fastest rider and first ever to 200 mph on an electric motorcycle would be a huge boost to my race career.”
The bike has attracted great interest from many sources, including Melbourne firm, Eken Powerbands. Now called the Catavolt Eken Power Bike, the machine will be on display at the 2011 Sydney Royal Easter Show following the record attempt.

Last year, the Catavolt team established a new Australian Land Speed Record with a 60kW machine, of 177kph and are confident of success with this year’s 180kW machine.

Jake is currently a 600cc Superstock class racer and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most noticeable talents on and off the bike. Jake is the current World Record holder for 24 Hour scooter racing, setting such a record in 2007, that it remains unbeaten.

THE SOLID DAVE ZIEN ACCIDENT FACTS–For those who are hearing snips of what happened to Sen. Dave Zien, let me set the record straight. He was involved in a motorcycle crash on Sunday morning last, around 6:15 am. He was near Mariana, Florida, when an SUV or van overturned in front of him and he was unable to avoid hitting it. His left leg was badly injured and he ended up losin’ it above the knee. He also received a hip injury which turned out to be fracture of the acetabulum, which is serious. Instead of open reduction and plates, they decided to do a total hip replacement, which is happening today.

This is his right side, so with the left leg gone and the right pelvic fracture and hip replacement, he will not be able to put weight on that for some time. He’s at Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center. Yesterday was his 61st birthday, and about 20 of us gathered at our Road Guardians Compound in Big Bend, Wisconsin. We called him and wished him a happy birthday and he was happy to hear from us.

Dave was weak and using the morphine pump every 5 minute interval, so it was hard for him to communicate well with us. He was best man at Vicki and my wedding, and a dear friend since around 1972. The media likes to report he was not wearing a helmet. Of course, he did receive a minor head laceration that required stitches, but he also has fused bones in his neck and his surgeons warned him not to ride anymore because a crash could result in death or paralysis.
Lucky he wasn’t wearing a helmet because the change of paralysis is great with the added weight to his already compromised neck. Anyway, his bike is totaled (it’s the one Harley gave him on April 6, 2009 when he achieved on million miles on his 1991 FXR) and he is pretty bummed about that. Also, he didn’t know where his Crazy Horse belt buckle was that I gave him for being my best man. He has worn that every day since June 26, 2002.

Also, his Lawmaker colors were missing. He and I are members of the Lawmakers, as was Sputnik. They’ve located the colors and he thinks the buckle is with his clothes in the hospital locker in his room. He has a long road to recovery and I talk to him every day on the phone. Vicki and I are working as point for the family so they don’t get overwhelmed with calls.

Our Wisconsin governor called me for his phone number, and he talked to Dave two days ago. Our former governor is trying to call him as well. Yesterday, Jim Fendry, Wisconsin Gun Owners, called me and he will be calling Dave also. They are good friends and work on concealed carry bills for Wisconsin. Twiggy from Easyriders called me yesterday too to pass on well wishes. With all of that, Dave is worried about people worrying about him. He also expressed interest in buying a Can Am Spyder to ride while getting used to his prosthesis. The guy who overturned the van was cited for improper lane change resulting in losing control and driving after suspension. It appears he had no insurance and was from Ohio.

Dave has insurance but it is questionable if he has enough. It’s going to be tough. My firm is representing him. I’ll visit him in mid April when Vicki and I ride down to Eglin Airforce Base near Panama City. She is the keynote speaker at a banquet the base is having.
Although the leg and hip are major injuries, I’m worried about the accumulative affect of these injuries and the surgeries. He has a bad heart and this will take a toll on it and each surgery makes him weaker. He’s not out of the woods by any means. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

IRISH MOTORBIKE & SCOOTER SHOW WINNERS–The 7th Carole Nash Irish Motorbike & Scooter Show took place on March 4-6 at the RDS (Royal Dublin Society) Exhibition Hall with the organizers announcing attendance figures of close to 27,000; the same figure as the last show (in 2009) despite the ongoing economic situation in Ireland.

This year, the decision was taken to expand the Affiliate custom show to offer two prizes of expenses to compete at the 8th annual World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Sturgis, one to the Irish “Best in Show” and the other to the winner of the International class, making the event one of only three ‘International Affiliates’ in Europe which offer two Sturgis prizes.

One notable new exhibitor in Dublin was Zodiac International, who also supported the custom show with prizes totalling 6500 euro ($9000.00).

The engine is also reversed, with a polished 6-speed Ultima gearbox turned around and mounted upright. The clutch is a modified Revloc running an open primary chain. The frame is a single-sided hardtail with eccentric adjusters for the friction drive, with the front end a mixture of inverted and springer forks.

Conlon kept up a tradition of being involved in every winning bike since the show has offered a Sturgis prize, assisting Don Cronin with his 2009 winning bike and winning the 2007 prize himself with C&C partner Mick Creedon.

The International prize was taken by Rene van Tuil of Revatu Customs for his peashooter “Ode to a Legend”. The bike is driven by a modified 1958 350cc w110 four-stroke single cylinder static water pump engine. Apart from the bicycle wheel rims and tires, every other part was either hand-made or modified by van Tuil, including the one-off board tracker-style single downtube rigid frame, reverse clutch, dummy magneto, 1 into 2 exhaust, crankcase breather valve and offset intake manifold, 8mm and 10mm copper oil lines, forks and yokes, oil and gas tank.

The standard of bikes in the competition continues to improve each year, with a record number of international entries competing for prizes in the Modified Harley-Davidson and International classes.

International bikes took all three prizes in the Modified Harley-Davidson class, with current World Champion Shaw’s Harley-Davidson placing first, with fellow UK dealership Warr’s Harley-Davidson runner-up. Lucky Buck Custom Cycles, also based in England, was third.

BIKERNET INSURANCE GANG ROAD TIP OF THE WEEK–Taking The Road Less Traveled. Might as well be comfortable.

We bikers sure do love to escape on our machines. Sometimes, you just have to get the hell outta town to bring sanity back into your head. No matter what you use to escape — a motorcycle or a motor home — you need to insure it. This is where your friends at Bikernet Insurance come in.

There are more than 7,000,000 families in the great USA who own a motor home or travel trailer today (RVs). While recent economics have had an impact on sales of new motor homes, it looks like one in 12 vehicle-owning households have chosen this means of transportation to get away. Some have gone all out with sumptuous rolling hideaways on wheels. Million dollar vehicles that are just plush and lush all over. The rest of us, love the travel trailers that we can tow with our Harleys stowed in back. Whatever your tastes, there’s a motor home for you out there.

Now, here’s the coverage kicker for you RV owners out there. Best to be informed.

In a nationwide survey of almost 20,000 RV owners, over 50% had their RVs insured under a simple “auto insurance” policy. This approach is inadequate and does not offer the proper coverages specifically needed to insure your home away from home properly. In other words, you could be paying for insurance that, according to the typical auto insurance policy contracts, you HAVE NO COVERAGE!

Here’s the low-down and why you should call us for guidance and good insurance for your RVs.

1. Personal Items Carried In the RV
Most auto policies do not cover personal items carried in a motor home or if they do offer coverage, it is usually limited and wrapped around crazy conditions that basically render the coverage useless.

2. “No” Liability Insurance When The RV Is Parked For Use As A “Residence”
This one is just silly. But, did you now that most auto policies do not include liability insurance when you have decided to park your motor home somewhere for use as your residence?

2. Accessories Usually Excluded
Yup, most auto policies covering RVs today don’t even cover accessories like awnings, antennas, roof-top air conditioners and satellite dishes. No kidding!

3. Other Lodging Needed If You Can’t Stay In Your RV
Imagine you have an accident and can’t stay in your motor home for a few days. Most auto policies do not cover expenses for lodging or traveling home if you can’t stay in your RV because of a covered loss.

So folks, don’t take any chances with your prized motor home or travel trailer. Call us and we’ll make sure your home away from home is insured right. Here’s a list of coverages we offer that are not typically offered in an auto policy.

1. Comprehensive coverage for protection from just about any direct, sudden & accidental loss.
2. Coverage for attached accessories
3. Emergency expenses if your rig is damaged more than 50 miles from home.
4. Campsite or vacation site liability when using a parked RV as a residence.

Plus, you can also get:

1. Total Loss Replacement Coverage – if your RV is destroyed within its first 5 model years and you are the original owner.
2. Replacement Cost Coverage for personal articles and belongings.
3. Roadside and Towing Assistance – 24/7 in the U.S. and Canada. Usually NO out-of-pocket payments from you here.
4. Full-Timers Coverage – provides you with liability insurance when you are using your RV as a residence.

So remember, an RV is not an automobile and should never be insured on a simple auto policy. We know RVs better than anybody else. Let us provide you with superior coverage and service for your rig.

Ride Safe Out There. We Care About You.

BIKER’S CHOICE POST-DAYTONA BRIEF–  The 70th Annual BikeWeek is now in the past. We were there, thought traffic seemed a little down, but the folks that did come by to visit were wonderful and friendly and were genuinely interested in how things worked.
We had our new bigger rig there and the feedback on it was OVERWHELMINGLY
positive!

We had lots of great compliments on the rig from vendors and consumers alike. The feedback on our new products such as Cobra, Rush and Freedom Exhausts were very positive. Our StreetFx lighting was big hit as were the LePera and Mustang seats and people LOVED the features of our Drop Tail Trailer. We also had our River Road line with us, and that seemed to please the crowd as well.

On the 11th, we again were witness to Paul Jr. unveiling not one, but two new builds. Check out our Biker’s Choice Facebook “like” page for more pictures…and “like” us while your there!! We are almost to 5000 friends and will have to close out the Fan page…

OUTLAWS FIND NO PLACE TO PARTY–DAYTONA BEACH — The Outlaws Motorcycle Club has left town once again, and the Police Department’s top cops aren’t losing any sleep over it.

This time gang members got in a huff when police nixed their plans to hold a party and a barbecue at a warehouse they rented on South Segrave Street for Bike Week.

It’s the first time since at least the ’70s club members of the Outlaws don’t have a place of their own, or an event in the city during Bike Week, said Deputy Police Chief Steve Beres.

A clubhouse purchased in 2009 on Tanglewood Street is up for sale and has several code enforcement liens on it, Beres and Police Chief Mike Chitwood said.

According to police, the 10 or 11 members who call Daytona Beach home roared off Friday and haven’t been seen or heard from since. A neighbor on Tanglewood said he had not seen club members for a few days.

The clubhouse, at 605 Tanglewood, looked abandoned Wednesday. A “for sale” sign sits in the front yard; signs warning “beware of the dog” are still posted on the chain-link fence.

Beres said he drove by the Segrave warehouse — zoned only for storage — last Friday and noticed a new fence and the Outlaw’s tell-tale black and white chairs outside. The chairs are usually set up wherever the Outlaws go. Now they’ve been packed up.

The deputy chief said he contacted gang members “Hillbilly” and “Broda” and told them they were in violation of zoning ordinances in the area.

“They wanted to have a barbecue and a party and I told them, ‘You can’t do that,’ ” Beres said. “They’re not too happy with me right now.”

Police have been spoiling the Outlaws’ fun for years.

In May 2009, code enforcement officers and police turned off the power at an old green house the gang had rented at South and Seaman streets. The house had myriad code violations and the club was given 10 days to fix them.

Instead, gang members rode off into the sunset, saying police had harassed them from their clubhouse yet again.

HEARING DATE CHANGED FOR CALIFORNIA BILL TO REQUIRE SMALL BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE ON AIR RESOURCES BOARD– Legislation (A.B. 135) that would give small business owners a voice on the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will now be considered by the Assembly Natural Resources Committee on Monday, April 4, 2011. It had previously been scheduled for March 21, 2011. Introduced by Assemblymember Curt Hagman (Assemblymember.Hagman@assembly.ca.gov), A.B. 135 would create a requirement for one member of the state’s Air Resources Board to be a current owner of a small business and have experience with a small business for ten years.

We Urge You to Contact All Members of the California Assembly Natural Resources Committee (List Attached Below) Immediately to Request Their Support for H.B. 135

For those interested in attending the hearing to voice support, the Committee will meet on Mon., April 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the following address:

State Capitol, Room 447
1315 10th Street
Sacramento, CA 95814

• The California Air Resources Board is a department within the California Environmental Protection Agency that is charged with the task of attaining and maintaining healthy air quality, protecting the public from exposure to toxic air contaminants and issuing air pollution rules and regulations.

• The current 11-person Board does not represent the interests of the small businesses that comprise the regulated community.

• In light of hard economic times and California’s continued commitment to clean air and green business practices it is essential that small business owners be included in important discussions and decisions made by CARB.

• A.B. 135 recognizes that the regulations issued by the Board directly affect small businesses and would ensure that the rights of small business owners are represented.

DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the California Assembly Natural Resources Committee to urge support for A.B. 135.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY–aver uh-VUR, transitive verb:

1. To affirm with confidence; to declare in a positive manner, as in confidence of asserting the truth.
2. (Law) To assert, claim, or declare as a fact.

Between us and the bottom of the sea was less than an inch of wood. And yet, I aver it, and I aver it again, I was unafraid.
— Jack London, The Sea-Wolf

Although it was not quite true, as he liked to aver, that almost forty years passed between his departure for Germany and his eventual return to Austria, he did not hurry back to Vienna after emigrating to the United States.
— Patrick McGilligan, Fritz Lang: The Nature of the Beast

Many companies aver that the most expedient path to bigger market share or an expanded product portfolio is through a merger or acquisition.
— Megan Santosus, “Arranged Marriage”, CIO Enterprise, July 15, 1999

Aver is from Old French-Medieval French averer, from Medieval Latin adverare, to confirm as authentic, from Latin ad-, ad- + Medieval Latin verare, from Latin verus, true. Other words deriving from verus are very, which sometimes has the sense of “true”; verify, to prove the truth of; and verdict, a decision or judgment, literally a “true-saying” (verus + dictum, saying).

ST. PATTY’S DAY NEWS–Never a dull moment around the Bikernet factory. Yesterday the girls went into Nuclear panic mode. They discussed sealing off the gym from fall out, then shifted to the Bikernet basement. I asked for a reprieve until Friday, but she was ardent yesterday, “We don’t have time. It’s coming,” she said.

Today was a different story altogether. The panic was gone, the nuclear cloud faded over some old school sharks cruising in the middle of the Pacific. Last week I was in the mountains when the fear of the Japanese based tsunami threatened our end of the Pacific Ocean. We are located one block from the water and we’re about 6 feet above sea level. Scary shit.

I spoke to some guys who perform Harley upgrades for guys in Japan. The business is currently gone. We will bring you more reports as they surface. In the meantime, next week we will launch a Rivera Clutch installation tech, the next Mudflap Girl FXR build report, and a feature on the Denco Harman rigid hot rod from Canada. Doc is working on a report from Australia. He recently bought my ’48 Panhead.

We are considering selling the Assalt Weapan so we can move ahead on some Bikernet building projects. Let me know if you’re interested. It’s ready for another pass on the salt. And according to Paul Cavallo, from Spitfire, our Frisco’d FXR frames and girder front ends will be completed next week. Then we can get our fingers dirty and begin the mock-up process. Hang on!

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
