Hey,
I’m reading State of Fear by Michael Crichton. Did you know that most of the major scientist in Australia don’t believe in global warming. They think our weather patterns change from time to time and man has little impact. Some say that one volcano eruption will produce more greenhouse gases than all the cars on the planet.
So, should we torture our businesses, car manufacturers, lawn mower makers, bike shops? Why can’t we find balance? Is it all about control or money? Can the government even control the agencies they create?
So, what’s a poor biker boy to do. I like the quote recently about regulations forcing us to become outlaws. Like one day you’re just riding down the street minding your own business. The next, they pass a helmet law, muffler law, anti-tampering law, and a law against patches. The following day you are a full-on outlaw. Well, I’m not turning myself in. Let’s read the news and party. WTF?

I grew up with Pat and always knew he would live and die by making bikes. I use to go to his house in Carlsbad and sit and watch him and his Brothers for hours making choppers.
I’m happy to hear he’s done well and found his soulmate. He is a good person and would love to hear from him. 4789786767. His wife Brooke can call. I’m sure I can tell her some stories she would love to hear and make her laugh. Happy for you Pat.

Pat is a good example. One of the reasons he left California was his fear of regulators, requirements, helmet laws, and CARB. He disappeared into the desert near Tombstone, Arizona, where he could build bikes and be left alone. — Bandit
HANG ON FOR AUSTRALIAN OVERKILL, Biker solitary confinement, Queensland style– Authorities in the Australian state of Queensland refuse to release images of the cells being used to hold bikers in solitary confinement, citing “safety and security considerations.”
Citing mounting community concerns, The Sunday Mail newspaper says it has sworn statements from lawyers who represent bikers charged under the VLAD laws, that paint a picture of what is going on behind closed doors in the Queensland prisons.
According to those statements, prisoners are forbidden from wearing underpants and, in the bikers-only facility at Woodford prison, are clothed in pink uniforms.
They are held in lockdown for 23 hours each day in cells “the size of a large dining table”, with only a mattress and a toilet.
According to some affidavits, the cells have been infested with cockroaches, ants and mites. There are surveillance cameras above the toilet, and above the shower in an adjoining cell, where inmates are given an hour a day “outside time”.
That cell is the same size but with a “caged area to allow for natural light”.
Cells are searched daily while inmates are forced to stand with their heads against the wall with arms raised.
Inmates are strip-searched before and after visits from their lawyers, and given half the standard daily food rations, their lawyers claim.
A government spokesman yesterday said the cells were “very different” than the picture painted. They all had a shower, a window, a sink, desk and chair, and bookshelves.
But Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said he made no apologies for being tough on members of organised crime gangs and it was working.
“They used their notoriety to be top dogs in the prison population and they actually continued their illegal activities by dealing drugs and intimidating prison staff,” Mr Bleijie said.
“Keeping them away from the general prison population has disrupted all of that and jail is now a real deterrent for them.”
“The prison regime is doing what it’s meant to do: We now have gang members resigning from their clubs and turning over a new leaf and some have had their restrictions lifted.”
There are about 50 “Criminal Motorcycle Gang” prisoners held in Queensland jails.
The government says “health and psychological services” are offered to inmates, and club members were able like other prisoners – to participate “in meaningful activities.”

The first anouncement is that the Cinematique Theatre in Daytona, FL will be showing the movie “Road 2 Smoke Out” on Thursday; Mar 13, 2014. The movie will start at 7:30 pm after the bike show at Willie’s Tropical Tattoo.
It is a very nice; artsy theatre and they are selling PBR ($2 a can) but it is small (like 70 seats) so if you want a ticket call the theatre at their box office (386) 252-3118 soon.
The theatre is putting this on, not the HORSE Magazine but we are so impressed they are doing it that Edge agreed to be there to answer questions about the movie and give out some free prizes.
2ND HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT– Chopper Prom
Autumn, Mike and the crazed crew at Boston Mike’s gave us an idea that cannot be ignored.
After the Smoke Out closes the gates Friday night we plan to have a special event in the campgrounds. We plan to have a “Chopper Prom.”
Yes indeed. Ladies save those previously unusable bridesmaid’s dresses. Gentlemen, time to hit goodwill and have your mama modify your new (old) tux into a sleeveless, masterpiece of unforgettable chopper attire.
We are currently in negotiations for a famous celebrity to take the prom pictures. We need a shop to call in and help us with a mirror covered, disco ball. We need punch bowls, etc… and be advised: The HORSE is now on the look out for a WEDDING SINGER to host this epic fiasco. Email Edge (edge.42@mac.com) your wedding singer suggestions. More details to follow! Stay tuned.
3RD ANNOUNCEMENT – EVENT TICKETS
Save by pre-registering. PLEASE tell your friends so they can save some cash. If you order your tickets by Mar 10, 2014 the cost for the event (a wristband that gets you in both Friday and Saturday) will be $ 30 per person or $ 55 with camping. So get on the throttle and grab a couple of discount tix, we know you want to.

QUICK, New Bikernet Reader Comment!–V-TWIN SHOW REPORTS THURSDAY NEWS FOR FEB 13, 2014
http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=11540
I agree that we need to keep fighting for our freedoms. I was at the ABATE of Maryland booth at the Baltimore Bike Show this past weekend helping pass out information and sell raffle tickets. I was getting a little frustrated at some of the “Bikers” walking past that couldn’t answer what ABATE was.
I loudly said something to one about him being a “Welfare Biker” because he has been living off our work for the past 38 years, to which he answered that he served in the Air Force for 6 years and felt he paid his dues for freedom. I thanked him for his service, then asked him if he thought his fight for freedom was over and if he was willing to just leave the fight to others.
He stood there for a minute, then went over and signed up for membership.

V-TWIN EXPO DELIVERS SOLID SHOW–With nearly 200 exhibitors, increased dealer traffic and stable Cincinnati weather, the V-Twin Expo delivered a solid show to the V-twin industry.
The 14th consecutive V-Twin Expo wrapped up in Cincinnati on February 9th with positive reactions from both exhibitors and attending dealers.
With nearly 200 exhibitors, the V-Twin Expo welcomed dealers from 43 states across the US and 19 countries around the world. Dealers came looking for the latest trends in the v-twin industry, newest products and learning opportunities.
Increased dealer registrations were clearly visible Saturday followed by a steady flow of traffic Sunday. Exhibitors offered glowing reviews on the traffic, business conducted and quality of dealers present at the V-Twin Expo as stated by Jamie Goodson, first-time exhibitor from Brooks Leather. “The Dealers here came to buy. They are principals from all over the country. I am really very excited about the turnout and the quality of the dealers”.
The location of the V-Twin Expo continues to prove accurate as pointed out by Ryan Keefe, of NPA “We like this location because we have a ton of dealers within a 500 mile radius of the show”. To see Jamie, Ryan’s and other video testimonials, check out V Twin Expo YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdoAGZhEG-91TUc1NGNo7pw/feed.
Dealers like Paul and Justin from 7th Gear Motorcycle Company out of Albany, Oregon travelled across the country to attend the V-Twin Expo for the exhibitor roster and the learning opportunities offered. “As new dealers, there was tons of information for us. It was really helpful. And the bikes were the best part of the show!” All attendees met with industry leading v-twin manufacturers, builders, designers, distributors and more during the two-day show at the Duke Energy Convention Center.
The 15th Annual V-Twin Expo show dates are February 7th and 8th 2015. The show will be held at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati. For 2015 exhibitor and dealer information, please visit us at: www.vtwin-expo.com.
UNCLE MONKEY ON THE CUSTOM BUG–Can’t you just leave it alone? It is a phrase that Mrs. Monkey utters every time a new bike enters the stable. The Kawasaki has the distinct honor of being the only bike I never striped down to a bare frame before I even rode the bike ten feet.
As soon as I get a bike it is disassembled, reworked, remade, reborn into my bike. It can be more than a little frustrating for her, as I work out the little bugs and nuances of the finished modified bike. That is where the excitement is. Building, modifying, creating.
Mrs. Monkey’s new HondaMatic needed a complete cleaning from top to bottom, front to back. The vintage bike has a cool stock look to it, a rare model. It draws people over to ask what it is? I was surprised on the drive home when she asked what she could change on the bike. Hmm. Well, the sky is the limit…or rather the bank account is the limit. She didn’t really like the chrome fenders, the bike sat a little too high; the crash bars seemed bulky and awkward.
As I disassembled the bike, cleaning it, and polishing it, I started glancing over to the mangled front fender from the King. A few hours later it was chopped, cropped and sitting in place along with a sporty solo seat.
Once the carbs are cleaned and synced the air box will disappear and I’ll re-jet for pod air cleaners. The factory burgundy with pink pinstripes (wow – I wonder who the target market was for this bike) will become classic black. Mrs. Monkey pokes her head in from time to time to give her input. I offered her a part for her to polish, clean, paint but she counters with an offer for me to clean the bathroom. Fair enough.
Building and maintaining bikes are my domain, she can keep the house clean and food in my belly. The HondaMatic is turning into a sharp little bike, far from what Honda had ever intended it too – something that will look right at home beside Snow White and the King.

CUSTOM FORWARD CONTROLS FROM LUCKY DEVIL METAL WORKS IN HOUSTON– Here is a sneak peak at some custom forward controls I did for a client’s Ironhead project.

[page break]
TC BROS BUILDS A BIKER FOR THE HORSE–“This project came about when the missus was talking about riding her own bike. She had been traumatized by an Ironhead Sportster and had fostered a hatred for the clutch lever. It seemed like a simple solution to me, find a cheap Honda CB750A and chop it up… no problem!
I hit eBay and there it was. It was located in Indiana and the bid was only $100 with two days left. It did look a little rough in the pics, no title and not running but that did not deter me. I wrote to the owner and he assured me it would run with a new battery and the numbers were good. I entered a max bid of $250 and won the auction for $210.
We jumped in the pickup and drove to get it – it was about a six hour round trip, but not bad at all.
The wiring was a mess, but I figured it out and when I connected the yellow wires (there was no key switch) the engine tried to turn over! I put it on a battery charger and then tried to kick it into life with the emergency left side kickstart… it fired right up!
Back on the lift it went and I started pulling everything off I knew I wasn’t going to use… which seemed to be most of it. I saw TC Bros advertised a weld-on hardtail for the regular CB750, so I got hold of them to ask if it would fit the Automatic. Bad news… it didn’t, but they did have a “Universal” kit. I had them send that out and I took it all over to Ronnie Harris at Chop Docs Choppers. We left the swing arm in place as long as we possibly could to make sure the axle plates lined up and Ronnie made it look easy as he welded it all together.
I used a Fab Kevin strut kit to set the rear fender in-place, I made the mounts for the front of the fender out of some old tubing. I bought the seat and gas tank from Kevin as well as the taillight. I do like the TC Bros kickstand I welded on – it’s stylish and works perfectly. I reused the original header pipes and adapted an old Supertrapp can that I had on my Shovelhead some years back.
I replaced the carb setup with the dual Mikunis from Cycle-X. I also used the Cycle-X electronic ignition and regulator/rectifier setup. I mounted the electrics under the battery box I fabbed up from some old steel plate that was part of a table I bought. The stock battery is huge, eight inches wide! I used a Ballistic Lithium battery to save space and weight and so far it’s been flawless. The shifter lever used to be part of my Shovel shift linkage so sometimes it’s good to never throw anything away!
I went back to Ronnie Harris for the paint job – the wife was specific about the paint she wanted – gold BIG metalflake with some black lacework. As you can see, Ronnie nailed it. I retained the stock brakes front and rear, they are more than up to the job. The last thing I added was a permanent kick pedal that Kevin made for me.
I tried to do as much as I could with this project, I’m a sucky welder, but I stuck a lot of it together and then had Ronnie either check it or go over it before paint. I had him do the important stuff on the hardtail because it’s not going to be me riding this bike usually and I need the peace of mind. Not that I mind riding it, it’s a fun bike. I made a short video about riding it because so many had questions about how the auto is to ride.
In 2013, Nancy rode the bike on the Sugar Bear/Mike Lichter ride in Sturgis. It was a challenging ride for everyone, and she made it fine, which made me proud. Big thanks to TC Bros, Fab Kevin, Cycle X and Chop Docs.

ON THE HUNT FOR THE NEXT FLATHEAD PROJECT–I thought your site was familiar (Bikernet). I’ve been there before – good material.
I like flathead Harleys. Your saw my 1948 WL. I’m in the market for more, perhaps one or two more. I prefer to have a bike that’s “almost there.” The cost to bring them stock again is very costly, and so I prefer to pay a few dollars extra upfront for the right bike. I paid $8,750 for the WL you saw last week – a fair price.
A big twin flatty is worth an extra $7,500 to me.
Keep me in mind.

I know this would be an administrative nightmare but, if you offered a package of a shirt and pool ball key chain with the team logo for $100-125, maybe some of us would get on board. I know I would.

AUSSIE COPS RAID MC CLUB– Police in the Aussie state of Victoria claim the Comanchero motorcycle club planned to blow up Hells Angels premises in retaliation for attacks on its state president’s businesses last year – prompting Melbourne wide raids today.
During raids this morning, in which 63 warrants were executed and 18 alleged bikers and their associates arrested, explosive gel, detonators and cords were found.
Det-Supt Peter De Santo, who oversees the Echo taskforce, said police had “credible” intelligence the Comancheros were planning to attack the Hells Angels, renewing hostilities that had played out in September last year.
De Santo would not elaborate on which Hells Angels clubhouse or premises was to be targeted in the attacks.
More than 560 police were involved in the raids today, which involved the Australian Federal Police.
Of the 18 alleged Comancheros arrested, nine were charged but only one is set to face court this afternoon.
It is understood eight members have been given police bail.
During the raids, police seized power gel, detonators and detonator cord, firearms, including a revolver, a Taser, $150,000 in cash and drugs.
“This is a part of the ongoing feud between the Hells Angels and the Comancheros,’’De Santo said.

BULLSHIT STATISTICAL REPORT FROM THE BADLANDS–Nearly half of Sturgis-goers are women, survey says.
STURGIS, S.D. – Nearly half of the visitors to the annual Sturgis rally are women, according to a survey conducted at the 2013 rally.
Other results of the survey are less surprising. Most survey respondents are over 40, own a home and have an annual household income of more than $75,000.
Sturgis rally director Brenda Vasknetz told the Rapid City Journal more than 25 percent of visitors planned to stay for eight days or longer. “That was a surprising fact for me,” she said. “I wouldn’t have thought it was that high.”
The information comes from a city-funded survey of nearly 2,000 attendees over eight days at the 2013 rally. The city conducted the survey for its new sponsorship marketing agent, Legends Marketing.
Age information was compiled through a separate survey. It showed that 76 percent of rally-goers are between 41 and 65 years old, and 44 percent are women.
Among other information in the city survey report:
About 50 percent of attendees ride to the rally on their motorcycle; about 37 percent arrive by car or truck.
About two-thirds of those survey respondents who own a motorcycle own a Harley-Davidson. The next most frequently owned motorcycle (less than 10 percent) is a Honda.
More than 80 percent of all survey respondents own their own home, and nearly 30 percent of them have no mortgage payment. Fewer than 20 percent are renters, and most renters are in Sturgis to work.
Individual spending varies but mostly ranges from $100 to $199 per day. About 30 percent of visitors spend less than $100 per day, and about 15 percent spend more than $300 per day.

SONS OF ANARCHY CLAIMS — “We basically saved Harley,” says Sons of Anarchy co-star Mark Boone Jr. (Bobby) to Susan Carpenter of The Hollywood Reporter. In a time before the economic meltdown, motorcycle sales, especially for Harley-Davidson, were booming. After the collapse, sales have only started to pick up again within the past two years (at nowhere near pre-2008 levels, however).
Boone Jr. seems to think he and his fellow cast members are the reason. Granted, SOA is a popular TV show, and it’s great to see actors actually riding the motorcycles, but let’s get real here. Basically saving Harley-Davidson? That’s a bit of a stretch.
Sure, SOA’s Harley-Davidson exposure certainly helped promote the brand to a wide audience, youngsters (ages 18-34) especially, but other factors have certainly played a part. To better understand H-D’s growth, I turned to Jennifer Hoyer, The Motor Company’s Media Relations Manager. Here’s what she has to say about Harley’s recovery, and whether SOA had any effect on sales:
“There have been a tremendous amount of factors to H-Ds success over the last few years – various people, processes, promotions, etc. Starting the same year SOA aired in 2008 continuing through 2012, our market share in our outreach sales has seen double digit growth to women, young adults, Hispanics and African Americans.
However, we have also seen steady and continued growth from our international regions as well as to our core US customers. So while there have been many factors that have contributed to our success, we’d certainly say our relationship with SOA has been one of many things helping us grow our customer base. Our relationship with SOA has been mostly beneficial from our side, as we have enjoyed getting many of the cast members all to be real riders — showing them the freedom that Harley-Davidson motorcycles bring to their lives. That’s what it is all about.“
So there you go, Bobby. You didn’t save Harley, but you definitely look cool trying. We’re just glad you’re on two wheels.

BIKERNET OFFICIAL PHILOSOPHER MAKES TODAY THE DAY–How often have we said to ourselves “today is the day?” We may be planning to start something new, let go of something, to quit something, do something, be something or whatever. As we begin we may have the best intentions and then BOOM, life gets in the way and we decide to put it off until another day.
I’ll bet you I have said today is the day I am going to start losing weight a thousand times. If I have said it once, and I still am 20 pounds more than I want to be.
It takes character to truly make “today the day” and that is the ability to carry out a good resolution long after the mood, in which it was made, has left you! Today, why not write down what you are going to do, maybe start with a small goal but make sure nothing or no one gets in your way.
Tomorrow review what you wrote and grade yourself. Did you get it done? Keep adding to your list and crossing off what you have accomplished. Making active notes can be key. I have been using this method for quite some time and it is working for me.
Let us get on the path of a bigger, better more perfect Life starting right now.
I will no longer let anything or anyone including myself stray me from my path of accomplishing of my bigger, better, and more perfect life. I rejoice in the Greater Possibilities of Today
And SO It Is

MISSOURI MOTORCYCLE SALES ON SUNDAY–JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Laws that once banned retail sales on Sundays are largely gone in many states. Yet it remains illegal in Missouri to sell cars, trucks and motorcycles on Sundays.
Now there is an effort in the Missouri Legislature to lift the ban for motorcycles.
A House committee heard testimony Tuesday from a Kansas City area Harley-Davidson dealer who is one of the main backers of the legislation. Rick Worth said weekends are a prime time for motorcycle enthusiasts to go riding and shopping. His dealership is several miles from the Kansas border, and one of his main competitors is in Kansas.
“He can and does open on Sunday, and he’s very happy to sell my customers motorcycles,” said Worth, the owner of Worth Harley-Davidson.
“In order for us to be competitive, we need to have that day,” Worth added.
As originally drafted, legislation by Reps. Mike Cierpiot and Caleb Jones would have carved an exception in Missouri’s law to allow Sunday motorcycle sales only in Jackson and Platte counties — two Kansas City-area jurisdictions along the Kansas border.
But during Tuesday’s hearing in the House General Laws Committee, Cierpiot offered a revised version of their bills that would allow Sunday motorcycle sales statewide.
“It’s kind of an economic development tool,” said Cierpiot, R-Lee’s Summit.
No one testified against the bill. But some questioned that assertion.
Sam Licklider, a lobbyist for the Missouri Power Sports Dealers Association, said that — except for border businesses such as Worth’s — most dealerships probably would not sell any more motorcycles with a seven-day work week than with six days. It simply would give consumers more time to shop. He said the motorcycle legislation also could lead to similar requests from car and truck dealerships.
Missouri law already has several exceptions from the ban on Sunday sales of motor vehicles. Sales are allowed of recreational vehicles and mobile homes. State law also allows Sunday sales of tires and repair parts for motor vehicles.
Several motorcycle riders testified in support of the Sunday sales legislation. They said Missouri’s law is outdated.
“It’s just not right. You can buy everything else on a Sunday, so why not a motorcycle?” Bill Kempker, the legislative coordinator for Freedom of Road Riders Inc., said in an interview.
Motorcycle sales bills are HB1618 and HB1735.

A woman says she woke up to find a suspected burglar asleep on her couch. Police arrested the 26-year-old man Tuesday. He’s charged with burglarizing several businesses before making his way into the Mount Dora home.
The woman heard snoring coming from the living room while she was making coffee. She found the man asleep on her couch, covered with a blanket. He had helped himself to a beer from her refrigerator before going to sleep. When police arrived, they woke him up by removing the blanket. He was holding a butcher knife he had taken from the kitchen.

STATE PASSES LAW TO LEGALIZE SHOOTING POLICE– Finally some rational legislation is passed concerning ‘public servants’ unlawfully entering another person’s property.
All too often, we see examples of cops breaking into the wrong house and shooting the family dog, or worse, killing a member of the family.
Well, Indiana has taken action to “recognize the unique character of a citizen’s home and to ensure that a citizen feels secure in his or her own home against unlawful intrusion by another individual or a public servant.”
This special amendment is no revolutionary new thought, only common sense.
Self-defense is a natural right; when laws are in place that protect incompetent police by removing one’s ability to protect one’s self, simply because the aggressor has a badge and a uniform, this is a human rights violation. Indiana is leading the way by recognizing this right and creating legislation to protect it.
Of course cops have already begun to fear monger the passage of this bill, “If I pull over a car and I walk up to it and the guy shoots me, he’s going to say, ‘Well, he was trying to illegally enter my property,’ ” said Joseph Hubbard, 40, president of Jeffersonville Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 100. “Somebody is going get away with killing a cop because of this law.”
Instead of looking at the beneficial aspect of this law, which creates the incentive for police to act responsibly and just, Hubbard takes the ‘higher than thou’ attitude and is simply worried about himself.
How about questioning the immoral laws that you are enforcing in the first place? Or how about sympathizing with the innocent people whose pets and family members have been slain, due to police negligence?
