Hey,
Are you packing for Sturgis? It’s that time of the year to make our annual pilgrimage to the badlands.
Along the road we finally have time to think without a myriad of distractions. Have you ever watched “Hell on Wheels?” It’s a wild series made in Calgary about building a railroad across the United States, the greed, the corruption and the bad government.
It’s incredible. We are living in another Wild West situation and while you run through the desert toward Deadwood think why? I have a contention. Two things may have a major impact: Government over-regulation, corruption and a shitty economy. If you can’t make a buck and party, and freedom is replaced by thousands of pages of regulation, what the hell are you going to do? Maybe bad things.
Here’s the crazy portion of the equation: It could be easily fixed by the government, but will they?
Let’s hit the news and then ride somewhere, anywhere. The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by Cycle Source Magazine, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, Las Vegas Bike Fest, ChopperTown and Iron Trader News.
FRANKIE BALLARD and Allstate ‘Guardians of the Ride’ — Make Appearance at Allstate Rider Protection Zone during Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
Allstate Insurance Company has partnered with country music sensation, Frankie Ballard, for its first-ever Guardians of the Ride initiative. Announced in May alongside Motorcycle Safety and Awareness month, Guardians of the Ride recognizes safety advocates who have dedicated their lives to improving motorcycle safety through the education of riders and drivers alike.
Allstate named five riders from across the country as the 2016 Guardians of the Ride. Now, all five riders will join Allstate and Ballard at the Allstate Rider Protection Zone at the annual Sturgis rally where they will all be acknowledged for their dedication and commitment to safety during a special safety Q&A followed by a meet-and-greet with Sturgis attendees.
Riders are encouraged to come out and meet Frankie and the Guardians on Tuesday, August 9th from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. MT at the Allstate Rider Protection Zone located at 1544 Lazelle Street (Corner of 6th & Lazelle) in Sturgis.
Ballard, an avid rider and accomplished country music singer-songwriter, has charted three singles on the Hot Country Songs charts and released his third album “El Río.” When Ballard isn’t working on his music, he enjoys hitting the open road on his Triumph Bonneville.
The 2016 Allstate Guardians of the Ride are as follows: Catherine Bochat-Duross (San Antonio, Texas), Ken Higginbotham (Anderson, S.C.), Lisa Cook-Gordon (Lansing, Mich.), Mark Howie Sr. (Omaha, Neb.) and Tom Wright (Roebling, N.J.).

BRASS BALLS CYCLES BUILDS A DIGGER– What makes the Digger great is that it is a timelessly designed bike. It’s built on a chassis that has stock geometry. Meaning it’s the perfect blend of cruising and great handling. For this bike, the goal is a svelte black bike, simple & timeless, with all the quality and high end components you’d expect in a custom bespoke bike.
The flat side Sporty tank is mounted in a slight frisco position. For this bike, a springer front end and softail suspension has been selected. A springer front end is as cool as it gets. But for the front end, we want something unique & reliable, so we incorporated a wishbone, which we chromed to contrast the black rear legs of the springer. Although this bike looks like a rigid, it is a softail. We use Progressive softail shocks ensuring a smooth ride that keeps your tire connected to the road.
The overall look is comprised of a gloss black powder coated chassis, high gloss black sheet metal, black lighting, black wheels with chrome hubs, signature black brake calipers, black hand & foot controls, black motor with machined fins & chrome covers, ceramic black exhaust, black & chrome tanny, black primary belt drive, black & chrome front end, a black leather seat and a touch of brass, grips. We’ll talk more about the individual components in future articles.
It’s complex yet simple, elegant, yet tough. It’s powerful and understated. This is the epitome of a timeless bike. And because we hand build each one using only the best components, we stand behind them with a 1 year/100,000 mile warranty. Not only will this operate trouble free but it will still look great 10, 20, 30 years from now… timeless.
We make your dream bike a reality.
Have you ever wanted to have a custom bike built unique for you, but didn’t know where to start, or thought the process might be a bit intimidating?
It’s easier than you think. Email us today to find out just how exciting & cool the process is. We’d love to help you.

THE HOMELESS CONUNDRUM— I was contacted by this agency regarding the Homeless efforts in Long Beach. It made no sense, so I asked them what their goal or mission was. Here’s their response:
The mission is to build a tool for homelessness service organizations to allow them to better allocate resources and services for their client populations. We are building out a general scope prior to, but here is the problem statement, which is derived directly from service organizations:
Organizations working with homeless populations, particularly those outside of the continuum of care, do not currently have an effective way of communicating about and sharing resources nor do they have an effective way of ensuring that resources for clients are delivered as efficiently as possible (overlap prevention, etc.).

ALLIGATOR STOPPED– with Beretta Jetfire .25
Florida woman stops alligator attack using a small Beretta pistol.
This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, cool-headed woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator. What is the smallest caliber that you would trust to protect yourself? A Beretta Jetfire testimonial…. Here is her story in her own words:
“While out walking along the edge of a pond just outside my house in The Villages with my soon to be ex-husband discussing property settlement and other divorce issues, we were surprised by a huge 12-ft. alligator which suddenly emerged from the murky water and began charging us with its large jaws wide open.
She must have been protecting her nest because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today! Just one shot to my estranged husband’s kneecap was all it took….
The ‘gator got him easily and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. It’s one of the best pistols in my collection! Plus the amount I saved in lawyer’s fees was really incredible.

NEW STATS PROVIDED BY THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION– Just an FYI that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released a fact sheet that provides statistical projection of traffic fatalities for 2015, and compares the projections to fatalities in 2014. This document is attached.
The numbers are preliminary and NHTSA is continuing to gather data on crash fatalities using information from police crash reports and other sources. According to the report, it is too soon to speculate on the contributing factors or potential implications of any changes in deaths on roadways. The final data and annual file for 2015 will be available later in 2016, which usually results in the revision of fatality totals and the ensuing rates and percentage changes.
After a quick review it appears that they are reporting “significant increases” in motorcyclist fatalities at a 9% increase. This is slightly less than the Governors Highway Safety Administration (GHSA) preliminary report which reported a 10% increase in motorcycle fatalities:
http://www.ghsa.org/files/pubs/spotlights/motorcycles_2015.pdf
We’ll continue to watch this and report out when the data is finalized later this year.

BIKERNET BOOK OF THE WEEK CLUB– Classic Flash 3: Japanese Style
Jeromey McCulloch & Justin “Lowercase j” Sellers
Atglen, PA—Visiting tattoo shops around the country, artists were overwhelmingly asking for a new resource on Japanese-style flash tattoos. We’ve met that need with the next book in our Classic Flash series, Classic Flash 3: Japanese Style.
Japanese folklore and modern American tattooing come together in this book of more than 100 sheets of tattoo flash designed to be drawn on the body in a single session.
Exploring the rich history of Japanese ink drawings and making readily tattooable images were the priorities of this third book in the Classic Flash series. The artists applied themes and characters from Japanese mythology, such as yokai, to their traditional American aesthetic.
Divided into three sections, one each for designs by the artists individually, and one with flash created collaboratively, the book features designs that have gradually more complicated backgrounds, or filler.
Tattoo collectors and enthusiasts with an appreciation for manga, who may be intimidated by extremely complex Japanese tattoo designs, will revel in this colorful, whimsical collection of flash.

JIMS TOOL OF THE WEEK– No. 5532 Vacuum Tappet “Pump Up” Tool
Our popular and effective bleed technology that is found in the JIMS® brake bleeding tool has now been applied to hydraulic lifters. A special jar designed for vacuum, holds up to four hydraulic lifters in a convenient tray with tappet positions identified.
Once vacuum is applied, bubbles can be seen escaping from the lifters until they are completely bled. Lifters are now ready to install. Since the tappets are now pumped up, there is no risk of damage to the valve train.
JIMS No. 5532 is made in the USA and has a suggested retail price of $79.50.
Use on Twin Cam and Evo tappets. (Tool can be used for many other tappets similar in size and diameter.)

Weego, innovator of portable jump starters and rechargeable battery packs, today announced the launch of Weego Jump Starter 44 – an all-new portable jump starter redefining the industry with unique technological features never before seen in the market.
Weego design and electrical engineers created Weego 44 to ensure it is easy-to-use, safe and reliable and that it provides power to start a gas engine up to 6.4 liters as well as charge mobile devices including phones, tablets, laptops and other USB devices.
Taking a page from the tremendous success of their original Jump Starter Battery+ line, Weego Jump Starter 44 is packed with new-and-improved features to reinforce its unique design, ergonomic form and intuitive functionality. Weego 44 is easily the safest and simplest jump starter on the market; it can be used by anyone: from moms to motorheads who need power when on-the-go.
Features include:
Orange Exterior – In a sea of black and silver engine interiors, dark storage compartments, and the requirement for emergency jump starts in the dead of night, highly visible “Weego orange” makes an attention-getting statement.
Unique Styling – Reminiscent of a retro automobile’s front grill, its smooth lines and hand-friendly, compact shape make Weego 44 easy to hold and store while being infinitely fun to look at.
Big Battery Power – Premium, high-quality, lithium-polymer battery capable of jump starting any gas engine up to 6.4 liters and 3.2 liter diesel engines.
Smarty Clamps – Deliver Weego power to the vehicle’s battery with sight and sound to help guide through the jumping process.
Enhanced Safety – Connection Detection, Over-heat Protection and Power Surge Protection technologies in the Smarty Clamps™ are just some of the new safety features of Weego 44.
Rugged Design – With a surf ‘n turf IP65 rating, Weego Jump Starter 44 is protected against exposure to any dust and water spray often encountered in harsh, outdoor environments. A hood covers the power supply input when not in recharge mode and a gasket-edged front cover protects outputs.
Onboard Flashlight – A 500 lumen flashlight with two LED lenses will stay illuminated for up to 14 hours on a single charge; the flashlight has its own dedicated power button and also has strobe and SOS functions, lasting up to 28 hours on a single charge.
Thoughtful Convenience – A hook and lanyard allows Weego 44 to be suspended when a stable, flat surface isn’t available during a jump start; or hang it to illuminate the engine bay too.
Detect-O-Matic USB-Device Charging – Get the fastest charge possible with quick-charge compatible phones, tablets, speakers & more.
12-Volt Accessory Power – Dedicated 12-volt port provides convenient power for accessories like portable air compressors, lanterns and more.
19-Volt Laptop Charging – Dedicated 19-volt port allows for fast and easy charging for most laptops.
Peace-of-Mind – Weego Jump Starter 44 is independent lab tested and fully covered under Weego’s Crazy-Long 18-month warranty.
One of the most exciting breakthroughs of Weego 44 is its all-new, patent-pending Smarty Clamps™ that make jump starting a vehicle easier than ever. Designed with a rear hinge point, Smarty Clamps™ have jaws that open much wider than traditional clamps making it easier to connect the device to any battery terminals.
The ergonomic design also ensures a better grip regardless of hand size and strength. Each jaw delivers power from both sides guaranteeing the best jump-start connection possible. Extra-long, 24 inch cables make hard-to-reach connections to the battery terminals incredibly easy.
Weego 44 was designed with a complete set of safety and convenience features which sets it apart from all other jump starters. Lights and sounds built into the Smarty Clamps™ make it easy for the user to instantly know that a successful engine start is possible.
Weego 44 incorporates new Connection Detectiontechnology that displays a green light to indicate the cables are properly connected and ready for a jump start. A red light lets the user know the unit is improperly connected or not connected to a 12-volt system.
Flashing lights and a buzz noise alerts the user to a Reverse Polarity issue (crossed cables) on the battery terminals. Weego 44 also has Over-heat Protection which prevents any damage of Weego during cranking; after a cool down period, it resets itself for another jump.
Power Surge Protection shuts Weego 44 down automatically if the engine requires more power than Weego is rated to deliver and Anti-Spark Protectionensures the unit will not spark if the clamps touch each other or other metal objects.
Weego products are sold at www.myweego.com and at major online and brick and mortar retailers nationwide.

DREAM RACER NEWS– Motorcycle Life Podcast.
We chat with Dream Racer Christophe Barriere-Varju (by Steve McDowall)
In the first of our regular chats to Christophe he talks about the National Geographic show “Riding Morocco: Chasing the Dakar”, the response to the show, what it’s really like to ride in the wide open spaces of Africa and how he prepared former Miss Universe Australia and Miss World, Laura Csortan, who had never ridden off road before, for the ride of her life.
We talk about the movie “Dream Racer”, the only film in the entire history of the Dakar Rally that has ever won an award – and it’s won 7! Why has Dream Racer had such a positive impact on people who have never ridden a motorbike or have no interest in the rally itself?
And of course Christophe always has a funny story to share, but this time he also has a challenge for Steve – one that will push him way outside his comfort zone!
DREAM RACER (The Film) has now won 7 Awards Worldwide and is Internationally acclaimed by its viewers around the globe. DREAM RACER is available on Blu-Ray, DVD, On-Demand including the following subtitles:
When you’re chasing a dream, you can’t ever stop believing. Dream Racer is an inspiring account of the fear of life going by unfulfilled and the pursuit of dreams as the antidote to this fear.
HARLEY-DAVIDSON REPORTS SECOND QUARTER 2016 EARNINGS– Strong share gains in the U.S. in the face of industry headwinds, international sales up
Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE:HOG) second quarter 2016 diluted earnings per share increased 7.6 percent to $1.55 compared to diluted EPS of $1.44 in the same period in 2015. Net income was $280.4 million on consolidated revenue of $1.86 billion compared to net income of $299.8 million on consolidated revenue of $1.82 billion in last year’s second quarter.
Harley-Davidson worldwide retail motorcycle sales in the second quarter were down 1.9 percent on weak U.S. industry results. Harley-Davidson retail motorcycle sales in the U.S. were down 5.2 percent compared to the year-ago quarter, with the overall U.S. industry down 8.6 percent for the same period. Harley-Davidson U.S. market share for the quarter was 49.5 percent, an increase of 2.0 points over the same period in 2015. International retail sales increased by 4.3 percent over the prior year quarter.
“We are pleased with our ability to gain market share in the U.S.,” said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Executive Officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc. “Competitiveness in the U.S. remains intense, and our demand-driving investments are showing traction.”
Through six months, Harley-Davidson’s 2016 net income was $530.9 million on consolidated revenue of $3.61 billion compared to six-month 2015 net income of $569.7 million on consolidated revenue of $3.50 billion. Six-month 2016 diluted EPS was $2.91, up 7.4 percent from $2.71 in the year-ago period. Worldwide retail motorcycle sales were down 0.6 percent from the same period in 2015. International sales were up 4.4 percent, offset by a 3.4 percent decline in U.S. retail sales.
Given market softness in the U.S., the continued competitive environment and global economic uncertainty, the company is taking the precautionary step of lowering its full-year shipment guidance. The company now expects to ship 264,000 to 269,000 motorcycles to dealers worldwide in 2016. This action is consistent with the company’s long-standing commitment to manage supply in line with demand.
“While our investments to grow product awareness and ridership globally are beginning to take hold in a number of markets, current conditions in the U.S. and economic headwinds in other parts of the world combine to raise caution for us as we continue to focus our strategy to drive demand and deliver strong returns to shareholders,” said Levatich.
Retail sales in EMEA were up 8.2 percent in the second quarter and 8.4 percent for the first six months behind a strong reception to the new 2016 motorcycle models and increased demand driving investments. Asia Pacific retail sales were up 0.8 percent in the quarter and up 3.4 percent for the first six months compared to 2015. Canada retail sales grew 2.0 percent in the quarter and 7.2 percent for the first six months versus a year ago as the market continued to respond favorably to the company’s transition to direct distribution.
Revenue from motorcycles and related products was up versus the prior quarter behind increased motorcycle shipments. Operating margin as a percent of revenue decreased versus the prior year primarily as a result of lower than expected gross margin driven by unfavorable mix, currency and manufacturing expenses.
Harley-Davidson is revising its full-year guidance for motorcycle shipments and now expects to ship 264,000 to 269,000 motorcycles to dealers worldwide in 2016, which is approximately down 1 percent to up 1 percent from 2015.
The company had previously provided full-year shipment guidance of 269,000 to 274,000 motorcycles. In the third quarter, the company expects to ship 48,500 to 53,500 motorcycles compared to 53,472 motorcycles shipped in the year-ago period.
The company now expects full-year 2016 operating margin of approximately 15 to 16 percent for the Motorcycles segment, compared to prior guidance of 16 to 17 percent. The company continues to expect 2016 capital expenditures for Harley-Davidson, Inc. of $255 million to $275 million.
Shareholder Returns
The company paid a cash dividend of $0.35 per share for the second quarter for a total of $0.70 for the first six months of 2016. On a discretionary basis, the company repurchased 2.6 million shares of Harley-Davidson common stock for $118.9 million. In the second quarter of 2016, there were approximately 181.3 million weighted-average diluted shares outstanding, compared to approximately 208.6 million shares in the year-ago quarter. At the end of the second quarter, 23.0 million shares remained on board-approved share repurchase authorizations.

Sam Wheeler, a renowned land speed motorcycle racer, is dead after the high-performance bike he was testing at Utah’s famed Bonneville Salt Flats fish-tailed, went airborne and crashed at 200 mph. He was 72.
Wheeler died Monday afternoon at Intermountain Medical Center in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray because of traumatic injuries suffered in the motorcycle accident, hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said.
Wheeler was going about 200 mph during a test run when the back of the streamliner motorcycle started fish tailing, said Mike Cook, the event organizer who witnessed the incident. His motorcycle began to slide and then popped into the air and came crashing down on the caged section where Wheeler was seated, Cook said. Wheeler was alive when emergency crews extracted him from the car but died about four hours later at the hospital, Cook said.
“We all have real heavy hearts,” said Cook, organizer of Mike Cook’s Bonneville Shootout. “Land speed racing is one of the most family orientated sports there is the world.”
Wheeler, an engineer from Arcadia, California, was known as an innovator and pioneer in the sport. He spent more than two decades building, fine-tuning and racing a motorcycle on which he reached speeds exceeding 300 mph, said Pat McDowell, a fellow racer and longtime friend. At one time, he held the land speed record for motorcycles, he said.
“He’s was pretty much one of the legends of our sport,” McDowell said. “He did it with his brain, not his wallet.”
Wheeler was testing the motorcycle this week in anticipation of two big races in August and September at the Salt Flats. The site brings races from around the country to use the flat, glasslike surface to set speed records.
He had been working on the motorcycle in recent years with a goal of setting the motorcycle speed record and surpassing 400 mph, McDowell said.
“Everyone was rooting for him, even competitors,” said McDowell, vice president of the Southern California Timing Association.
Wheeler was known for his ability to build and modify his motorcycle by himself. He was perfectionist who knew aerodynamics well, said Bill Lattin, president of the Southern California Timing Association, which is set to host a major racing event at the Salt Flats in August.
“He built that motorcycle by hand. Every single part on it,” Lattin said. “He’s been rebuilding it, making it stronger, faster and more aerodynamic.”
He is survived by a wife and two children, said McDowell. Wheeler’s family couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
McDowell, Cook and Lattin said Wheeler was a kind-hearted, laid-back man.
”He was the nicest guy in the world,” Lattin said. “He would do anything for anybody.
