Sucker Punch Work Truck Part 8

Ok so the motorcycle season got a hold of me and I couldn’tget this final installment written, but here it is…enjoy!

It was “go” time when we got the paint back from Kirk Taylorat Custom Design Studios, we had just three weeks until the bike needed to beloaded and on it’s way to SEMA. When I opened the box that contained the gastank I knew that this was going to be the nicest paint I will ever have on anyvehicle. I had this ridiculous idea of panels etc that I relayed to Kirk, andas any good painter will do, he said that won’t work but I will take your ideasand run with it…and run with it he did. The paint looked a mile deep and hadthat lace look that only a skilled painter can pull off without it lookinggaudy.

The first order of business was getting the engine so itlooked as good as the rest of the bike, it had over 5000+ miles on it and itshowed. I opted for a simple engine matte black rattle can paint job. It didn’tlook great but it helped. Later I added some killer looking cast valve coversfrom www.fullerhotrods.com. They fita Sporty top so we needed to get the lowers etc and get the proper gaskets. They throw everyone off because they look so unique they can’t tell what engineit is. I bead-blasted the intakemanifold and cleaned up the carb as good as I could. We taped up the frame toavoid any undo scratches and set the motor in, then we took the custom builtBaker tranny and set it in, www.bakerdrivetrain.com.The great looking (and sounding) exhaust can was provided by www.danddexhaust.com via Dar Holdsworthat www.brassballsbobbers.com andfit so perfectly that the kicker pedal clears the muffler with just enough clearance.

After the drive-train we got the front-end taken care ofwhich included reinstalling the Boyd Motor Company 35 mm triple trees andcustom made headlight. We found out after a few miles the used tubes I boughtwere bent so I bought new ones and all is well. We could only work on thenights and weekends because Ryan has a day job, so it was a lot of long nightsbut everything started to fly together. We went to a friend of Ryan’s machineshop at 3 am (it was the only opening they had) and got a 3D points coverknocked out and got some plans in the works for some more detailed risers.

The rear wheel was another challenge, it had the ISR sprotorset-up for www.LAChoprods.com and a newpaint matched chain www.insanechains.com.The tolerances were very close so Ryan  spent a long time tweaking this and that to make sure ittracked right and nothing rubbed. It didn’t need to be in running condition forSEMA just needed to look like it would run. Ryan spent the extra time to makesmall clamps for the stainless steel oil lines, brake lines and sparkplugwires. It is the little details that set bikes apart. The bike rolled smoothlyand we loaded it into a cheap U-Haul to take it to Vegas for its’ debut at SEMAin the DuPont paint booth. The show went very well and the bike was wellreceived. Next we needed to get it ready to shoot at Mike Lichter’s Studio inBoulder then off to Daytona to put some miles on it. I remember the first time I kicked it to life and that was agreat feeling, then we did a little bit of tuning and loaded it in a truck withwww.keyboardmotorcycleshipping.

I really got a feeling for the bike when I started to rideit around Daytona. It was cold as hell in Daytona but to get on my bike andjust be able to ride was a great feeling. I ended up putting it in the Willie’sshow and it got best Evo. It is great to have a bike like this that I can ridethe hell out of…the next story will be on the 1000 mile ride I took on it withno problems.
