Hey,
It’s Sunday, the rain is gone, and Ray Wheeler, the new Bikernet Tech Editor, hit the road as the sun crested the Bikernet headquarters. He’s a long-distance rider who can’t stand to be away from his turbo-charged twin cam for more than a couple of hours.
We had a meeting planned for this weekend and since rains pummeled the coast, he was force to jump in his little pickup and blast down the coast from San Jose for a major Bikernet Pow-Wow. Ray is a very young and spry 67-year-old, and semi-retired. Financially he’s in good shape, but he wants to ride and be apart of the industry. You’ve seen his brief 200 mph Racing efforts in the news and his involvement at Bonneville. He’s hooked, but there’s more.
BIKER’S CHOICE ASKS THE QUESTION, Looking for loud?– Check out Pro Pad’s Mini-Beast II’s. The 128 decibel blast’s come from dual trumpets and chrome-plated 18 gauge steel horn covers with a mirror finish. Completely plug-n-play and comes with everything necessary for easy and painless installation.

NEW SURREY B.C. SHOP COMES TO BIKERNET–I work at a small bike shop called Denco Cycle in Surrey B.C. I was wondering if we could get a post in the news about some projects we have around the shop and a bike for sale. I am surprised about how our shop has been here 32 years and many people have never heard of us, or don’t realize that there is an option besides the dealership for any custom accessories and service work.
We are currently building a Knucklehead for a customer who wants a thrown together/backyard look. We also have a Knucklehead engine for sale that’s a cone bottom end with pan cylinders and Knuckleheads. And lastly, we have a John Harman bike for sale with a 120″ Harman Shovelhead. You can check us out on the web at www.dencocycle.com

Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame Announces 2011 Inductees– The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the Hall of Fame inductees for 2011. The Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have made a long term positive impact on the motorcycle community.
Don Emde – Don Emde comes by his passion for motorcycling naturally. He was born to a motorcycling family in 1951, and spent much of his youth either working in the family’s dealership or tearing up the tracks of Southern California as an amateur scrambler, dirt tracker and road racer. He turned pro in 1969, and set numerous records with his Daytona 200 win in 1972. Emde and his father became the first (and so far only) father son pair to win the Daytona 200. After his racing career, Don went on to become a successful publisher and author. He currently publishes Drag Specialties Magazine, Parts Magazine and Parts Europe Magazine.
Del Hofer – Del Hofer has been a Harley-Davidson dealer for 50 years, first in Huron, South Dakota, then in Fargo, North Dakota. His love of motorcycling is obvious through many of his activities. Del is active in the American Motorcyclists Association and is the longest serving member of the Harley-Davidson Dealer Advisory Board. A long-time AMA amateur racer in all styles of racing, Del also served as an AMA referee and District Congressman for quite some time. Del’s passion for motorcycling is evident to anyone who meets him. He encourages men and women alike to take safety courses, get active in riding and enjoy it in a safe and fun way.
Robert Craig “Evel” Knievel – Probably one of the best-known motorcycle riders in history, Evel Knievel liked to live on the edge. From riding his bicycle at an early age to pole vaulting when he was in the army to playing semi-pro hockey, Evel tried it all. In the early 1960s, Evel joined the motorcross circuit with moderate success until a broken collar bone forced him to take a job as an insurance salesman. The insurance business didn’t hold him for long, though, and soon he moved his family to Washington where he started his first daredevil show. During his career, he attempted 75 ramp-to-ramp motorcycle jumps, many successfully. In 1974, Knievel unsuccessfully attempted a jump across the Snake River on a steam-powered rocket – the Skycycle X-2. Knievel died of pulmonary disease in 2007 at the age of 69.
Michael Prugh – While Michael Prugh is certainly well recognized as a motorcycle designer and manufacturer, it’s his work educating others that has taken him beyond the title of “builder.” Michael has been involved in many builds for charity and as a competitor. He took second place two years in a row in the AMD’s World Championship of Custom Bike Building and has been featured in numerous publications featuring various builds. In 2010, Prugh led a team of students from Western Dakota Tech to build “Method” a true “one off” bike that was auctioned at the annual Legends Ride. This year, Prugh is again teaming up with Western Dakota Tech, Black Hills Harley-Davidson and the Buffalo Chip to build a bike for the Legends Ride.
Gloria Tramontin Struck – You’d never believe this outspoken 85-year-old woman is the same girl who in 1941 at age 16 tearfully told her brother “I do not want to know how to ride!” Well, her brother won that argument and she’s been riding from that day until today. She’s owned 14 motorcycles in her lifetime, has traveled every state in the continental U.S. as well as Canada. At the age of 76, she took two trips to Europe, traveling a total of over 6,500 miles in 8 countries. Gloria has been a Motor Maid for 65 years, having joined in 1946 and is the longest member still riding. She continually encourages women to ride and to be involved. Gloria is an inspiration to riders and non-riders alike.
Mike & Margaret Wilson – While both Mike & Margaret Wilson have contributed individually to the sport and lifestyle of motorcycling, those who know this couple consider them to be a pair. Mike was an expert dirt-track and TT racer both before and after his stint in World War II. Right after his return, Mike bought a 45 cubic inch Harley-Davidson motorcycle as a birthday surprise for Margaret. Mike and Margaret were business partners in a Harley-Davidson then Honda dealership in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for over 25 years. Both Mike and Margaret have been avid riders and have spent countless hours encouraging others to ride, too. Known to an entire generation of women raiders, Margaret is a golden life member of the Motor Maids celebrating 60 years this year. Mike and Margaret both serve on the Board of Directors of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum and continue to work to preserve the heritage of motorcycling through their involvement.
The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast is scheduled on Wednesday, August 10 at 9:00 a.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, SD.

BIKERNET 15TH ANNIVERSARY LOGO REBUILD–A couple of readers commented on our logo effort, and I had a couple of concerns, so we shifted gears and here’s what the young master illustrator, George Fleming came up with. Let me know which version you lean towards.
We will hopefully wrap up the logo next week and bring you reports on the progress in Thursday’s news. Don’t hesitate to drop us a note or a suggestion. I’m already anxious to ask Heather New to engrave this into a massive brass plate I have.
We will print stickers and patches as we decide what the hell we’re doing for the 15th celebration.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY SOCIAL STUDIES REPORT, What is Celibacy?–
Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by circumstances.
While attending a Marriage Weekend, My wife and I, listened to the instructor declare, ‘It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other..”
He then addressed the men,’Can you name and describe your wife’s favorite flower?’
I leaned over, touched my wife’s hand gently, and whispered,
‘Robin Hood -All-Purpose, isn’t it?’
And thus began my life of celibacy………

To: Dan Forrest and the New ABATE of Georgia– First we want to thank and congratulate ABATE of Georgia for getting the work out regarding the Motorcycle Checkpoints.
Dan, we heard that you met with the state today. Which now makes two Georgia MC organizations that have expressed their concerns to the State of Georgia.
Have tried to hit this link: Motorcycle Only Stops Strategic Plan
We are located in North Florida (and other areas). A number of us have people we know who will be coming through Ga. on their way to Bike Week. We would like to be able to give them a heads up.
Some with other groups, would like to make themselves available to photograph, film, and possibly contest some of these checkpoints. I’m sure you aware of the court case in New York re: motorcycle only checkpoints and that as worded, i.e. from NHTSA, ““Motorcycle Law Enforcement Demonstrations” there is legal precedence that these checkpoints are illegal.
We were wondering if you were able to determine the dates and locations of these Checkpoints?
In Florida public notice has to be given as to location and time of checkpoints. We beleive it is the same in other states. But do not know about Georgia.
Hopefully you will not take this as anybody attempting to trespass on ABATE of Georgia. If anything we would like to assist where and when possible respecting that Georgia is your state.
We do believe however that this is an issue of national concern. That if it the Court case in Georgia goes against us and Georgia succeeds in NHTSA efforts that these things will spread across the country like wildfire.
Thank you for all you are doing. Hopefully we can get a line of communication open that will enable us to add all our strengths to this egregious attack on the Constitution.
We look forward to hearing from you,
with respect–
rc

BIKERNET INSURANCE SEMINAR– Want personal success in 2011? Get the “right” goals–
1. Explore Your Motivations
If your attitude is “I keep trying to lose weight, but it keeps finding me.” you’re in trouble. Change your mindset, get your reasoning right. “I will lose 30 pounds because my wife will stop calling Fatso or, get back in shape so that I can get behind the wheel of my truck and go to work.” Whatever your motivation, make sure it is in line with your ultimate number one goal for the year.
2. Know What You Really Want
Do yourself a favor and be as realistic as possible here. Don’t assume that losing weight will make you amazingly attractive to the opposite sex for example. You may just have a “face” problem and not a weight issue. Be honest to yourself about what you really want so that you won’t be disappointed.
3. Focus On Just One Factor
Focus, prioritize and focus some more is the key to your 2011 success. This may not be your year for a complete makeover. Instead of starting with removing 8 inches from your beer gut, start with strengthening your big toe by walking around the neighborhood. Then, get those biceps toned by repeatingly lifting two 6-packs of beer instead of drinking them.
4. Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone
If your 2011 goals are truly worthwhile, you will need to push yourself to try new things. Accept that you are going to feel uncomfortable, at least in the beginning. Try hanging around with different people for a change. Don’t go nuts here. We are not saying you join the homeless or decide to join a local religious cult. Make connections with people that support your 2011 goal(s). Make sure those new friends support you.
5. Take Charge Of Your Life
Hey, it’s a new year. 2011 could well be the best year of your life. You don’t have to do what you’ve always done, or what everyone else expects you to do. Take time to think about what you really want to achieve and why? Question yourself and your assumptions. Make sure you are on on top of your decisions and your game.
Get your game on with Bikernet Insurance folks. We care about you and your ride. Ride safe out there.

WORKING ON THE ASIA RUN– Today’s picture was sent to me by the Director of Public Relations for Bay View Hotel. This was a press conference for the Thai Academy Awards. Big time stuff.!!!
I met with the TAT Chief and he thinks he may be able to help with a tour group. He told me I could co-ordinate with the consulate in Hollywood near Paramount. My idea is to get a bunch of bikers together as the US delegation to Burapa 2012.
After e-m yesterday I went to CFM and had lunch/dinner at Zen. Same same.
Then it was time to meet the TAT Chief who happened to be attending the film conference.
So that’s how I managed to get in on that auspicious occasion with all the whozits.! I actually registered as Press and got a credential. Foriegn correspondent that I am. I coincidentally had my new QT Mag. shirt on – so I looked more official !!
Got some more bht – 30.4 to one USD.

House Approves SAN Supported Measure to Suspend EPA E15 Program; Senate Action Next–The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a provision to prevent the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from using agency funds to permit an increase in the amount of ethanol content in gasoline to 15% (E15). The provision is part of a larger bill to fund the federal government during fiscal year 2011 which must also be approved by the U.S. Senate. The SEMA Action Network (SAN) requested this action and worked hard to secure the vote. When signed into law by President Obama, this timely legislation will protect automotive enthusiasts and consumers from misfueling and other unnecessary harm.

MEMORIAL RIDE COMING– Hey Bandit, I thought you might like to check out this very special bunch of people I have the pleasure of riding with. They are going to present a very special memorial of a fallen hero to his parents during Daytona Bike Week. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed.

DAYTONA BIKE REPORTS COMING–Damn, the year is in full swing. Next week we will bring you an installation report on a Rivera clutch, Daytona reports, a bike feature from Absolut Swedish motorcycles, the first mudflap girl build report with shots of our new Spitfire FXR frames. Oh, and I still have the K&N bobbed Sporty report.
Not to forget the next feature from photographer Peter Linney. I’ve got another Life and Times to wrap up, and we have another chapter of Uncle Monkey’s Travis fiction.

I have a quick question; what if we started an enhanced Cantina Club membership where you could get special deals on products, maybe insurance discounts, and special products only for club guys. Would you be up for that? Ray Wheeler said he would help, and we would throw a special run each year to some undisclosed wicked hiding place. Let me know your thoughts. I also plan to donate a portion of each membership fee to a motorcycle rights association. It would cost an additional $20 bucks over the standard Cantina membership fee.

Let me know your thoughts.
Ride Forever,
