SUNDAY POST FOR JULY 11TH

Hey,

Life is nuts, but it’s still cranking along. Yesterday, I attacked something I’ve never grappled with before. I attempted to complete fuck up a perfectly good Sportster gas tank for our Peashooter project. It was the biggest stumbling block of this 1929 Bonneville bike effort.

Two elements bothered me. I’ve never challenged myself to learn sheet metal fabrication. Second, I was burnin’ daylight. I put crazy deadlines on myself constantly and Sin Wu throws them in the trash. “You don’t need to finish that,” She whispers. “Let’s have sex.”

Makes it tough on an old biker to stay focused. But I felt the biggest obstacle needed to be completed this weekend in order to stay on schedule. Let’s hit the news and I will discuss the outcome.

A FEW WORDS FROM THE BIKERNET DOCTOR OF INSURANCE–Exhibitors & Vendors Love Our Low Premiums – No point in paying any more than you have to in order to insure that booth.

We go see a lot of motorcycle exhibits, car shows and get to party at many events as part of our vocation. Tough work but someone has got to do it. Someone has got to also insure these events and that’s where we come in, locked and loaded. As you now know Brothers & Sisters, we here at the Bikernet Insurance Center love insurance so that you don’t have to. We are making it so easy and cheap for exhibitors and vendors to buy Event Liability Insurance for example, that they are sending us thank you cards.

Who else can get you this key insurance coverage for only $65 in many instances and rarely more than $150 for a full $1,000,000 limit. We average about $109 for a typical vendor booth at a bike show or car show. Yes, that’s it. Just over a hundred bucks.

It’s quick, easy and all done online. You fill out the application, get your quote, bind coverage, pay with your credit card, print out your certificates showing the additional insureds involved and voila. Relax knowing that you are ready to show and sell your goods with insurance documents in hand. For the big events like the upcoming Sturgis Bike Rally, we’ve even set up a special “Sturgis” event liability banner where you can get your event liability insurance for $65 plus taxes and fees. Go Ahead! Let your friends at Bikernet Insurance serve you.

Click here and go. Ride safe out there. We care about you.

WITH NRA SUPPORT, CHICAGOANS CHALLENGE NEW CITY GUN LAW– Barely a week after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in McDonald v. City of Chicago, NRA is supporting a new lawsuit—Benson v. City of Chicago—to enforce the court’s decision. The suit, filed on July 6 against the city and its mayor, Richard Daley, is the first to challenge the city’s new gun control ordinance passed on July 2 (please see related story from last week’s Grassroots Alert here). Just four days after the Court struck down the nearly 30-year-long handgun bans in the cities of Chicago and Oak Park, Chicago enacted one of the most restrictive anti-gun ordinances in the United States. Commenting on the scope of the new ordinance, Corporation Counsel Mara Georges, the top attorney for the city, said, “We’ve gone farther than anyone else ever has.”

The city’s so-called “Responsible Gun Ownership Ordinance” provisions include: a ban on all gun sales in the city; a ban on possession of firearms for self-defense outside the “home”—even on a patio or in an attached garage; a ban on having more than one assembled and operable firearm in the home; a provision that allows the Chicago police to arbitrarily ban “unsafe” handguns based on unlimited criteria; and a training requirement to obtain a Chicago Firearm Permit. (However, range training would be impossible since it will now be unlawful to operate a shooting range within city limits.)

Challenging the provisions are a number of gun owners and would-be gun owners in Chicago, along with the Illinois Association of Firearms Retailers—a trade association that includes members who would open gun stores and shooting ranges in the city, if not for the restrictive new law.

Commenting on the need for the lawsuit, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said, “The Supreme Court has now said the Second Amendment is an individual freedom for all. And that must have meaning. This decision cannot lead to different measures of freedom, depending on what part of the country you live in. City by city, person by person, this decision must be more than a philosophical victory. An individual right is no right at all if individuals can’t access it.”

“The Supreme Court told Mayor Daley and the City of Chicago that it has to respect the Second Amendment. By enacting this ordinance, their response is ‘Make Us’,” added NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. “The NRA will not rest until Chicago’s law-abiding residents can exercise the same freedoms that our Founding Fathers intended all Americans to have.”

Recent statements by Chicago officials reflect their contempt for the Supreme Court decision. Alderman Daniel Solis stated, “the decision made by the Supreme Court is not really in the best interests of our citizens.” Alderman Sharon Denise Dixon denounced what she called the Court’s “blatant… misreading of the law.” And another city council member even went so far as to say, “We’re here today because of their poor judgment.”

Benson v. City of Chicago was filed by lead counsel Charles J. Cooper and his colleagues in the Washington, D.C. firm of Cooper & Kirk. One of the nation’s premier litigation firms, Cooper & Kirk has represented NRA in major constitutional litigation for many years.

BUZZ KANTER, SUPREME AMERICAN IRON PUBLISHER IN CHIEF, ENTERS THE CANNONBALL– In case you were wondering what I have been up to lately, I purchased and have been totally rebuilding a 1915 Harley-Davidson motorcycle I plan on riding 3300+ miles coast to coast in September. This is part of the Motorcycle Cannonball Run www.MotorcycleCannonball.com .

Here is a short video clip of the 1915 Harley I will be riding. After a thorough mechanical overhaul we got it running for the first time yesterday. It looks and sounds like this – barely more than a bicycle with a motor strapped in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCivICKrPe8

We will be leaving from Kitty Hawk, NC on Sept 10 and hope to pull into Santa Monica, CA Sept 27.

We have been following the progress of the build in American Iron Magazine. –Buzz Kanter

NEW CALIFORNIA MUFFLER LEGISLATION CAUSED MISINFORMATION ON THE STREETS– I did a quick search and found this: California Highway Patrol has issued a bulletin clarifying state exhaust noise regulations. The Bulletin (CHP Information Bulletin 98-100) contains the following information:

Contrary to some citations issued recently, exhaust modifications that increase noise are not automatically illegal in California. The regulations allow exhaust modifications increasing noise up to 95 decibels. The California Vehicle Code does not prohibit exhaust modifications, modified tailpipes or muffler tips which increase exhaust noise levels over that of factory-installed systems as long as noise levels do not exceed the 95-decibel limit.

Only in South Dakota– A South Dakota 70 year old senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership.

Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. “Amazin’,” he thought as he flew down the highway, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a South Dakota State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120.

Suddenly he thought, “What am I doin’? I’m too old for this!” and pulled over to await the trooper’s arrival. Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and slowly walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then said, “Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If ya all can give me a new reason for speeding–a reason I ain’t never before heard–I’ll let you go.”

The old gentleman paused then said: “Three years ago, my wife ran off with a South Dakota State Trooper. I thought you were bringin’ her back.”

“Have a good day, Sir,” replied the trooper. You Betcha, said the senior citizen.

Leaked docs show Motorcyclist caved to advertiser pressure, fired editor– A series of email exchanges published earlier today by MC24, appear to indicate that Motorcyclist fired Dexter Ford, a contributing editor who had been with the magazine for three decades, after a story he wrote for The New York Times angered the magazine’s advertisers.

The emails, which Ford confirmed for us are the real thing, include an apparent assertion by Motorcyclist editor-in-chief Brian Catterson that major helmet makers threatened to withdraw advertising in his magazine due to Ford’s New York Times piece. That same email then quotes Catterson as saying, “I’m getting serious heat over this, to the tune of threatening my job unless I do something about you.” (September 30, 2009 at 4:21 PM)

If true, the emails raise troubling questions about a potentially unethical relationship between advertising dollars and editorial content at the popular magazine, one that stretches beyond mere motorcycle reviews and appears to include reporting on the safety of children’s helmets.

We will bring you the whole saga, by Robin Hartfiel, next week.

Hundreds say final farewell to Wabash dealer Steve Brandt–Hundreds of riders lined up Wednesday to say a final farewell to a Wabash, Ind., Harley-Davidson dealer who was killed in a motorcycle crash July 1.

Steve Brandt, 59, of Roann, was driving his Harley south on County Road 700 West in Wabash County. His motorcycle went off the road, flipped at least once and threw him into the air. He wasn’t wearing a helmet. A passing motorist found him. Emergency responders had him flown to a hospital by helicopter, but he didn’t make it.

At his funeral, hundreds of loyal friends and customers of Brandt’s Harley-Davidson showed up to ride in a memorial in a procession through Wabash and back to his dealership for a cookout to celebrate his life.

“Steve had every friend in the world. He didn’t make no enemies,” salesman Dean Shepherd told WANE. He had worked with Brandt since 2003. He says Brandt taught him to treat customers more like family.

“He was about was taking care of everybody walking in and out of the business,” says Shepherd. “If you didn’t buy the bike off of him, the next one you would. That’s the way he was. He brought a lot of customers in that store.”

Brandt’s wife Toni, who oversees Motorclothes at the dealership her brother-in-law Mike Brandt owns, says motorcycles and the dealership were her husband’s life and that he would be missed. “We all love him very much. But in the end, he’s gonna come back home with me.”

Timeline: Pursuit ends in horrific crash involving Fort Worth officer– Officials offered this preliminary description of how Thursday’s chase unfolded.

— Sometime after 1:30 p.m., Tarrant County narcotics officers are conducting surveillance on a house in Mansfield where they believe methamphetamine is being distributed.

— Two men on motorcycles arrive at the house, stay awhile, and ride away wearing backpacks.

— A confidential informant tells the narcotics officers that the men are carrying “a great deal” of methamphetamine.

— Narcotics officers in unmarked cars follow the motorcycles onto U.S. 287 and notice that one of them does not have a license plate.

— Concerned about the reported amount of drugs, the narcotics officers ask a county K9 officer in a marked sheriff’s vehicle to make a traffic stop on the motorcycle with the missing plate.

— The K9 officer gives chase, and the motorcyclists split up. One escapes by heading east onto Interstate 20, but the K9 officer follows the other man as he speeds north on East Loop 820 in Fort Worth.

— Sommerdawn Sibley, 20, of Mansfield, who is northbound on the loop, sees the chase speed past her. She says the man being chased is wearing a red crash helmet and is aboard a red motorcycle. She notices his backpack, and says he is “flying.”

— The K9 officer can be heard on police radios asking his dispatchers if Fort Worth police will be assisting him.

— A Fort Worth patrol officer, later identified as a 15-year veteran, joins the chase on the loop near Meadowbrook Drive.

— The K9 officer allows the patrol officer to take the lead.

— At about 1:50 p.m. the chase merges onto eastbound Interstate 30, but the police officer loses control of his patrol car on the ramp. It leaves the roadway and crashes into a tree.

— A deputy, possibly the K9 officer, yells over the radio, “Fort Worth just wrecked!” He urges dispatchers to “send MedStar.”

— The deputy stops to help the police officer.

— The man on the red motorcycle escapes.

NEW SPORTSTER VINTAGE PROJECT FROM CRO CUSTOMS– The bike was commissioned by a client in London. The basic design was done by Conrad Leach and him and I later collaborated on the final design. There are so many details and stories about this damn thing it would take all day to write them down, but the basics are this:

We took a 1986 1100 sporty, pulled the motor, chopped the frame, kept the cradle, sold everything else. Built the frame from scratch after designing it via full scale drawings and some minor cad modeling to figure scale. The frame is a single down tube, goose neck. Wheels are dual 23″ with front pre-unit drum brake and rear 70s era Sportster. Front end is a narrowed big twin springer. Tank is hand made, finder is hand spun.

Everything you see that could be hand made, is hand made. Some cool features are the hidden battery in the front part of the right side tank, with the rear being an oil tank with fittings and lines hidden. Among other things! Thanks again, and I’ll see ya next Sunday at the LA Calendar Show.

MEANWHILE BACK IN THE BIKERNET FAB SHOP–After several interruptions at the headquarters Saturday morning, I hit the tank project hard. I moved the gas cap over and cut a piece to fill the original hole. I dug around and found bungs for the mounting system. We cut the petcock bung out of the factory tank, cut the new plate for the bottom of the tank and spent hours attempting to shape it with limited tools, a ball peen hammers and a large vice. We need to invest in an English wheel.

A new Ocean Engineering student moved into the Bikernet Café dorm recently. As it turns out he’s an expert TIG welder with sheet metal experience. He volunteered to give me a sheetmetal TIG welding class and weld the elements of the tank together. We worked until almost 9:00 before visitors arrive and dinner was ready. We were forced to knock off, drink whiskey, and be social.

We will hit it again, just as soon as I complete this news. More reports coming. Ride forever, –Bandit
