SUNDAY POST FOR JUNE 27TH, 2010

Hey,

This has been quit a weekend, and Sunday is just kicking off. I installed modified late model points in the Doctor’s ’34 VL, and it runs like a champ. We discovered that the engine was filling with oil. We needed to drain the lower end more often. Friday Dr. Nuttboy came over and we worked on the Assalt Weapan, preparing it for tuning at Bennett’s Performance next Friday. We machined shift lever bushings, modified and welded together a new rear chain guard. Mil Blair came over and we discussed Nitros and tuning with the Bonneville master.

Saturday, with the help of the Canyon Carver, I was able to hit the shop running. We finished mods to the Assalt weapan, including the new PM handle bar master for the rear brake with a Storz remote reservoir. Then I shifted to the Peashooter, machined the Paughco 45 neck, installed in the ’60s Ceriani front end and almost installed the front end. The fork stops are fucking with the bearing cups, so the front end needs to come off again.

A Bikernet wrestling match ended up in a separated rib and paramedics arrived to haul off the victim. John Gilbert found the Bikernet Hearse paperwork and delivered it at 11:00 p.m..  Sometime during the warm afternoon, the UPS driver pulled up and off-loaded the Curt trailer hitch for the Bikernet Hearse. Installation is one of the projects lined up for today. Let’s hit the news and I’ll tell you about the project list for today, and content lined up for this coming week.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SUNDAY WORD, kowtow KOU-TOU, verb–

1. To act in a subservient manner.

2. To kneel and touch the forehead to the ground in expression of deep respect, worship, or submission, as formerly done in China.

noun:

1. An act of servile deference.

The administration would kowtow to student activists by agreeing to meet with them and behave as if their demands merited serious consideration.

— Debra J. Saunders, “Starving for attention at UC Berkeley”, SFGate, May 2010

She didn’t kowtow to color, she didn’t kowtow to power, she didn’t kowtow to men. She was very, very strong.

— Naila Francis, “Raw & Revealing”, The Intelligencer, May 2010

Bikers don’t kowtow to any goddamn thing.

–Renegade, Bikernet.com

Kowtow is from the Mandarin k’o-t’ou, the custom of touching the ground with the forehead to show respect or submission, literally “knock the head.”

MOTORCYCLE HELMET TICKETS DROPPED–
ADRIAN, Mich. – Motorcyclists fighting unapproved helmet tickets they  received this spring from Adrian police were notified last week the cases are being dropped.

Legal issues brought up in Lenawee County District Court by an attorney for a motorcycle rights group are the same ones involved in a  lawsuit in federal court in Grand Rapids, said Adrian City Attorney  Sarah Osburn. Rather than leave the half-dozen tickets pending in Lenawee County District Court for months or years while the federal case is decided, she said, the tickets were dismissed.

Depending on the outcome of the federal lawsuit, she said, it is possible the tickets could be reinstated. But that has not been decided, Osburn said.

Helmet enforcement in Adrian this spring drew the attention of ABATE of Michigan Inc. An attorney for the state’s chapter of American Bikers Aiming Toward Education showed up for an April 20 hearing on a challenged helmet ticket in district court, along with about 20 local  members of the group.

Osburn said she and Sgt. Lynn Courington, who wrote the helmet tickets, agreed to drop enforcement action until the federal lawsuit defines how the helmet law is to be applied.

Rahal Letterman Racing Partners With Darwin Motorcycles and Steel Anchor On Naval Charity Bike Build–HILLIARD, Ohio- Celebrated around the world for its accomplishments on four wheels, Rahal Letterman Racing is entering the two-wheel world in a partnership with the naval-focused charity organization Steel Anchor and famed custom motorcycle builder Darwin Motorcycles to raise funds for U.S. Navy sailors and their families.

The partnership will raise funds for the U.S. Naval Hospital medical research efforts through the creation of a custom-built Darwin Motorcycle in which the bike’s theme honors Rahal Letterman Racing and its co-owner Bobby Rahal. The motorcycle, which is being created by Darwin Motorcycles, will feature graphics honoring Rahal’s Hall-of-Fame racing career that saw him win three Indy Car championships along with the 1986 Indianapolis 500. The bike will also contain some custom engineering modifications from the race team.

“We are quite honored to have been included in such a worthwhile endeavor that has the potential to positively impact the lives of sailors and soldiers that protect our country,” said Rahal. “Rahal Letterman Racing pledges to use whatever resources necessary to help create and promote this project and look forward to building toward a quality result that will help raise funding and awareness for Steel Anchor.”

The Steel Anchor charity, www.steelanchor.org, was created in 2008 and is a dedicated union of current and former Naval personnel whose goal is to raise money to help both prior and current sailors and their families. The organization was created by U.S. Navy veterans Vic Perz and Michael Keyes and has already been integral in charitable support on a global scale.

The motorcycle is slated to be completed by the end of the year and will then go on a year-long tour of the country to raise awareness for Steel Anchor. More details on the build, Rahal Letterman Racing’s contributions to the project and the process of awarding the bike to a lucky winner will be released as the project progresses.

“HAMSTER” GOLFER AT THE DENTIST

A man and his wife walked into a dentist’s office.

The man said to the dentist, “Doc, I’m in one heck of a

hurry.  I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go

play golf, so forget about the anesthetic, I don’t have time for the

gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with

it!  We have a 10:00 AM tee time at the best golf course in town and

it’s 9:30 already… I don’t have time to wait for the anesthetic to work!’

The dentist thought to himself, “My goodness, this is surely a

very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything

to kill the pain.” So the dentist asks him, “Which tooth is it sir?”

The man turned to his wife and said, “Open your mouth, Honey, and

show him..”

UN SMALL ARMS TREATY UNDER CONSIDERATION–Gun owners might not feel besieged right now, but they should be very concerned. Last week the Obama administration announced its support for the UN Small Arms Treaty. This treaty poses real risks for freedom and safety in the United States as well as the rest of the world.

According to the U.N., guns used in armed conflicts cause 300,000 deaths worldwide every year. Their proposed solution is a simple one. Keep rebels from getting guns by requiring that countries “prevent, combat and eradicate” what those countries define as “the illicit trade in small arms.”

The UN’s solution isn’t too surprising when one looks at the long list of notorious totalitarian regimes, such as Syria, Cuba, Rwanda, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, and Sierra Leone, which support these “reforms.” But not all insurgencies are “bad.” To ban providing guns to rebels in totalitarian countries is like arguing that there is never anything such as a just war.

In hindsight, during World War II, should the French or Norwegian resistance movements simply have given up? Surely this would have minimized causalities. But that is hardly a one-time event. What about Afghanis in their fight against the Soviet Union or Nicaraguan rebels fighting communist dictators during the 1980s? Was it wrong to help out? What about totalitarian governments that massacre their citizens? Don’t they have a right to protect themselves?

Many countries already ban private gun ownership. Rwanda and Sierra Leone are two notable examples. Yet, with more than a million people hacked to death over the last decade-and-a-half, were their citizens better off without guns?

Political scientist Rudy Rummel estimates that 262 million people were murdered by their own government during the last century — that is 2.6 million per year. This includes genocide, the murder of people for political reasons, and mass murder. Even if all 300,000 deaths from armed conflicts can be blamed on the small arms trade, an obviously false claim, people have much more to worry about from their governments. Adding the U.N.’s estimated deaths from gun suicides, homicides, and accidents still provides a number that is only a ninth as large.

Second, the treaty is a backdoor way to get more gun control laws adopted in the US. “After the treaty is approved and it comes into force, you will find out that it has this implication or that implication and it requires the Congress to adopt some measure that restricts ownership of firearms,” Former UN Ambassador John Bolton warns. “The [Obama] administration knows it cannot obtain this kind of legislation purely in a domestic context. … They will use an international agreement as an excuse to get domestically what they couldn’t otherwise.”

In addition, to keep track of guns, licensing and registration will be pushed, despite their complete failure to trace crime guns in the places in the US that have tried it or Canada. One also just needs to look no further than how Mexican President Felipe Calderon has blamed his country’s crime problems on the sun setting of the US “assault weapons” ban. Somehow semi-automatic guns, essentially deer hunting rifles that have a cosmetic outside that look like AK-47s or other similar weapons, are being painted as military weapons. The same claims now being made for Mexico will be made even more forcefully under the UN treaty.

Third, gun bans also produce another problem: increased murder rates. UN gun control advocates don’t want to acknowledge that everyplace in the world that we have crime data for has seen that gun bans result in higher murder rates. Americans have seen the increase in murder rates in DC and Chicago after their bans, and the sudden 25 percent drop in DC’s murder rates last year after their ban was removed. But as recent research shows, gun bans have consistently lead to higher murder rates around the world. Even island nations, who can’t blame some neighbors for their supply of guns, have seen increases in violent crime rates.

The Small Arms Treaty is just a back door way for the Obama administration trying to force through gun control regulations. With the huge standing ovation that House and Senate Democrats recently gave Mexican President Calderon for his advocacy of a new so-called “Assault Weapons Ban,” Americans who care about self-defense have been put on notice. The threats to gun ownership are as real as ever.

BIKERNET SCOOP OF A LIFE TIME FOR CANTINA MEMBERS ONLY–Want to break the bikernet scoop of a lifetime? I’m hearing rumors from friends in very high places that the reason BP is not stopping the leak in the Gulf is because if they shut off the pipe, without having a rig attached to it, they lose control of the pipe to the U.S. government. That’s why they’re rushing a rig to the site to build back on top to capture it. From what I’m hearing they have no intention of stopping the flow of oil, only capturing as much as they can with the funnel until they can re-rig the pipe.

If you could break this story with real evidence, your site would be on every major new publication on the planet and your numbers would go crazy. I can’t tell you where I heard this for obvious reasons, but the source is qualified to know and all of BP’s moves support this 100%. They will not top kill the leak. They will spend the next six months to a year (hurricane season could stop all re-rigging efforts) to re-rig that pipe.

RECENT AMERICAN IRON MAGAZINE REVIEW—
I obviously subscribe to too many bike mags as I just now got around to picking up my July issue of American Iron. I read magazines from back to front — don’t ask me why — so I read your piece first on Don’s Ace. Nice job. I saw the bike at the last Dave Mann Chopper Fest and now I know what I was really looking at, where it came from (imagine how many movie soundtracks sport that engine’s sounds), and how the build got that way it is now.

What an incredible job of design/fabrication by Tom Evans.

A woman goes to the doctor, beaten black and Blue.

Doctor: “What happened?”

Woman: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do.Every time my

husband comes home drunk he beats me to a pulp.”

Doctor: “I have a real good medicine for that. When your husband comes

home drunk, just take a glass of sweet tea and start swishing it in your

mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow until he goes to bed and is asleep.”

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and

reborn.

Woman: “Doctor, that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband came

home drunk, I swished with sweet tea. I swished and swished, and he didn’t

touch me!”

Doctor: “Well that is great, You see now how much keeping your mouth

shut helps?”

THE PASSING OF SPUTNIK, “LEGISLATIVE WARRIOR”

It is with heavy heart that the National Coalition Of Motorcyclists announces the passing of William “Sputnik” Strain, legendary bikers rights activist from the Lone Star State.  According to the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association; “Our great Leader, Sputnik, passed away suddenly at approximately 5:00 AM June 24, 2010 from a massive heart attack.”

Sputnik, inspired in the early nineties after attending the NCOM Convention in Atlantic City, was instrumental in organizing the grass roots effort to repeal the mandatory helmet law in Texas. Not stopping there, the “Legislative Warrior” spread the word throughout the motorcycling community with his “Five Steps to Freedom” to “Take back our country” and, in turn, inspired countless motorcyclists across the country to become politically active.

In Texas, he went on to spearhead election campaigns to get bikers elected to public office and formed the most effective caucus in the state, eventually enacting numerous biker-friendly laws and killing not only every anti-biker bill proposed but the political careers of those who dared to introduce them. Sputnik wrote the book on Texas politics, literally, as school textbooks have chronicled his achievements.

In addition to founding the TMRA2, Sputnik was a longtime member of the NCOM Legislative Task Force, and served as NCOM-LTF Chairman the past three years despite his failing health.

“Sputnik believed in everything he said and losing that determination will be a great loss to the motorcycling community.  The greatest tribute to him is to push forth with our fight for freedom and not let his death be in vain,” said James “Doc” Reichenbach III, Chairman of the NCOM Board of Directors and State President of ABATE of Florida, Inc.

Echoing the sentiments expressed by the entire motorcycle community, NCOM Founder Richard M. Lester said; “Sputnik is so universally loved and respected, from MRO leadership to COC patch holders and from bikers on the street to state and federal lawmakers, that his passing leaves a void which can only be filled by all of us moving forward together with his spirit and resolve.”

Funeral/Memorial Services are pending. The upcoming 26th Annual NCOM Convention in Albuquerque, N.M. next May 5-8, 2011, will be dedicated to his memory.

YOUNG BIKERS AND YOUNG DRIVERS ENTER THE DEADLY DRIVING SUMMER SEASON, BE CAREFUL– Public Service Notice from Bikernet Insurance: June 26, 2010:

Hey, remember what it was like in the ’70s popping wheelies, going fast for the hell of it and zig-zagging through traffic in your neighborhood. Helmet? What helmet? Those were the days. A simpler time. And, some of us got lucky and didn’t break our necks. Oh, ya. A few scratches here and there, some road rash, a few broken bones and a few embarrassing moments dropping the bike in front of the girlfriend.  But all in all, them early years learning to ride a motorcycle and learning to drive a car were exciting.

Distraction Nation

Teens today live in a different world full of distractions. As they empty out of the high schools across America and get into their cars and on to their new motorcycles, some will tragically contribute to an amazing statistic: car crashes are the leading cause of death for 15 to 20 year olds in the U.S. Add to this fact that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports more driving-related deaths in the summer months than any other time during the year, we parents have reason for concern over our children’s safety. With the July 4th weekend just around the corner, we need to pay attention folks. Too many young people are drinking and driving, texting while driving, talking on the cell phone, racing each other, changing songs on their MP3 players, or just goofing off for the fun of it. It makes for a killer combination of danger for bikers and cagers alike.

Parent-Teen Driving Partnership

According to new research, parents and other significant adults have a tremendous opportunity to enhance their role in deterring unsafe driving and riding behaviors among teens. If you don’t do it already, initiate regular conversations about safe driving habits with your kids and consider setting up a formal driving and riding safety agreement with your teen. Discuss rules around speeding, the number of passengers in a car, cell phone usage, texting while driving and curfews. Upon acceptance, these ground rules – with mutually agreed upon rewards and consequences – can be printed and posted on the refrigerator or the garage wall where teens and parents can refer to them throughout the year. One insurance company, the Liberty Mutual Group, has created a good website offering guidance on this parent-teen driving contract. Go to www.libertymutualteendriving.com to get all the features and benefits of their advice. The site offers a good teaching tool for both teens and parent. You should also refer young people to www.sadd.org. This site offers all kinds of advice for young people, including tips on driving and riding safely. The site also does a good job highlighting prevention of many destructive behaviors that are harmful to young people.

The Premium Shock

We don’t have to tell you how expensive it is to insure your teen driver. Nothing makes premium shoot though the roof faster than that 16 year old behind the wheel. You can save some serious money by putting your teenager through the National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course. Its available online at www.nsddconline.com/. We at Bikernet Insurance highly recommend this course. Many insurance companies offer lower insurance rates when the Certificate of Completion is provided as proof.

Vehicle Type Matters

You’ll also want to pay attention to the type of car and/or motorcycle your teen is on. There’s a huge  premium difference between a KYMCO 250 Scooter and a Ducati Monster. Having your teen drive the family sedan will also be a lot cheaper than putting them behind the wheel of your Corvette. The higher the horsepower rating, the higher insurance premium will be. For an older car or motorcycle that is paid in full, you also have the option of dropping collision and other-than-collision coverage and carrying only liability insurance. This action can drop your rate by half in many cases. Furthermore, with older vehicles, the blue book value is lower, which also reduces the cost of insurance.

Good Student Discounts

Insurance companies will often give you a break on premiums if your teenager has good grades or is on the honor roll.

 Good Driving Record

Some insurance companies reduce rates each year that your teenager does not have an accident or gets a ticket.

In summary, teenagers who keep a good driving record, get good grades, and drive an old beater, will be rewarded with lower rates on their insurance. Your personal involvement in guiding and coaching them about safe driving and riding skills, will go a long way towards a summer to remember.

Ride safe and drive safe out there. We care about you.

NEW FROM THE BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER, LAUGHTER YOGA– Laughter yoga is based on a simple truth that all children know: laughter makes you feel better (children laugh about 400 times a day; adults, 15 times). Developed by Madan Kataria, a family physician from India, laughter yoga is spreading across the United States and the world. Some typical exercises include:

    * Greeting laughter: Laughing while shaking hands with at least four or five people in a group.

    * Appreciation laughter: Joining the index finger with the thumb to make the universal “okay” sign to other group members while laughing simultaneously.

Laughter yoga is not really about humor (or yoga), but rather exploits the natural human tendency to laugh when others laugh – so when a group of people forces laughter, it quickly transitions to real, spontaneous laughing. I find this trend fascinating, and have no doubt that boosting the daily laughter quotient is indeed healthy, especially in adults.

AMA Dragbike Ceases Operations–Effectively immediately, Hammer Motorsports DBA AMA Dragbike Series, will cease operations indefinitely. Regretfully, today’s economic climate, rising costs and decreasing revenue makes it fiscally irresponsible to continue doing business. The final details are being worked out at this time.

“Motorcycle Drag Racing has been a passion for both of us for many years and we have given all of ourselves to this sport,” said Brandi Neithamer, Vice President of AMA Dragbike. “We knew this year would be very difficult given the economic conditions, but we never anticipated it would go downhill so quickly. Scott Valetti and I have a tough road ahead of us to close the business, and we hope to receive the support of the community during this difficult time.”

“The AMA will be issuing their own statement regarding the future of the AMA Dragbike Series,” Neithamer continued. “If there are any parties interested in discussing our operation of the series, please feel free to contact us. We will do everything in our power to help you succeed.”

Hammer Motorsports would like to thank all of the AMA Dragbike racers, sponsors and fans that have helped support the organization [formerly AMA Prostar] over the last 21 years.

“We have always strived to hold safe, fair and exciting racing events, and we appreciate all that have helped us achieve that goal,” Neithamer said. “Scott and I extend our best wishes to all in our racing community.”

NEW SPORSTER COMING FROM LUCKY DEVIL IN HOUSTON–Kent Weeks recently finished this cafŽ flyer. He modified the frame, seat, built the tail section, modified the tank, painted the bike and moved the ignition system. Plus, there’s always a bunch of details he added. You’ll see a feature shortly  on Bikernet.

HANG WITH US–
As we scramble through  thousands of upgrades, and learn the new system for Bikernet. When we finish, this puppy will contain a number of enhanced services, better looking articles, larger images, etc. It will cook.

So what’s Sunday look like. I need to work on the trailer hitch for the Hearse, take the front end off the Peashooter, modify it and replace it. Then that puppy will be on wheels. I’m pumped.

I’ve got to make a run to Sierra Madre Motorcycle Company this afternoon and pick up another lift, and various parts and pieces. Don Whalen is moving his shop and downsizing. I need to see what’s for sale.

So, what’s happening next week. I need to finish a Girl of Bikernet. We need to launch Marilyn’s second part of the Mountain Run coverage, from the Cycle Source Mag. Reports will start to roll in from the Smoke Out and I need to write my next HORSE Bikernet, Brass Balls Sweepstakes bike feature. I will also post the ACE feature from American Iron. And I have a Baker install piece coming together, just after the J&P Open house which happened this weekend.

In the meantime, have some fun.

Ride Forever,
