Hey,
It’s another perfect day in Paradise. We worked on my Mudflap girl FXR most of yesterday modifying and mounting the Custom Chrome rear fender. We installed the new Progressive shocks and continue to monkey with the wheel and chain alignment. I need to think about a chain guard and some mounting issues with the Spitfire custom built oil bag which Jim Murillo cleaned and sealed, then we discovered a problem. The return line fittings are too low, reducing the oil capacity to just two quarts. But it’s all good. We will use their fittings for a sight oil level gauge and run the return lines to the top of the tank with new 1/8-inch pipe bungs. The new position will afford me an oil capacity of at least 3.5 quarts, maybe 4 quarts.
Ray C. Wheeler and I worked in the shop until we couldn’t handle standing on concrete anymore and peeled out for Iron City bar in Pedro. This getting old is a drag. I can’t work in the shop until 4 in the morning anymore, and when we checked in at the bar, the code of the west calls for us old guys to leave the young broads alone. Ah, but we can still gaze. Let’s hit the news before I jump into a barrel of boiling shit.
REPORTS FROM THE BIKERNET CRIME SCENE–Direct quotes from cops:
5. “Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? Because that’s the speed of the bullet that’ll be chasing you.” (LOVE IT)
6. “You don’t know how fast you were going? I guess that means I can write anything I want to on the ticket, huh?”
7. “Yes, sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don’t think it will help. Oh, did I mention that I’m the shift supervisor?”
8. “Warning! You want a warning? O.K, I’m warning you not to do that again or I’ll give you another ticket.”

ALGAEBIO UNVEILS PRODUCTION STATS AS OMEGA-3 MARKET HEATS UP–By Elaine Watson, 17-Aug-2011
Algae Biosciences Corporation – a high-profile new entrant to the omega-3 fatty acid market – has unveiled detailed figures on anticipated production volumes after finalizing a deal to build the first phase of its new production facility near Holbrook in Arizona.
The Canadian firm, which aims to supply commercial quantities of EPA/DHA-rich oil from microalgae by early next year, says it will be able to make 1,060kg/month by late 2012 and 4,000kg/month by the end of 2013.
AlgaeBio claims its production site creates “near perfect” growing conditions for microalgae because it sits above an underground salt dome that interacts with the Coconino Aquifer – a vast underground sea – to produce “pristine” saline groundwater.
The $5m first phase of its plant expansion, which will involve 1,500 proprietary bioreactors plus harvesting and support equipment, is set for completion by December 31, and will be managed by MMI Construction Services.
Employee numbers will increase from seven to 19 by September 2014, said AlgaeBio, which has also started the process of securing self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status for its oils.
Algal omega-3 market heats up
The algal omega-3 market is rapidly heating up, with AlgaeBio promising to shake things up next year, Aurora Algae poised to enter the market with an EPA-rich oil produced from a new facility in Australia, and market leader Martek recently launching DHO-O, a new product sourced from a strain of algae containing both EPA and DHA.
While these firms are all operating in the vegetarian long chain omega-3 market, however, they are arguably catering for slightly different sections of it (Martek is still best-known for DHA, Aurora is focused on EPA and AlgaeBio will provide a combination of EPA and DHA).
They also operate very different production models.
Martek’s DHA, for example, is produced in a heterotrophic (in absence of sunlight) batch process via fermentation in big vats to which sugar, water and salt are added to help the algae grow before it is then harvested and dried.
The oil is then recovered using high pressure homogenization and solvent extraction or an enzymatic process (depending on the microalgae type).
Cost effective production
By contrast, AlgaeBio uses a different species of algae that grows via photosynthesis (autotrophic process) in a natural salt water aquifer using a continuous closed loop system benefiting from all-year-round sunlight.
This was a more cost effective process, claimed chairman Bob Thompson.
“Our proprietary technologies regarding bioreactor design, harvesting equipment and extraction methodologies, combined with the availability of no-cost, pristine brine water, enable us to drive down substantially the cost of production to a point that is simply not achievable by our competitors.”
LAST BROUGH SUPERIOR AT PEBBLE BEACH–As we gear up for our Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance coverage this weekend, we’ve got old classic motorcycles on the brain this week at Asphalt & Rubber. So fittingly enough we learn today that the last Brough Superior SS100 ever to be made from the Nottingham, England factory is about to be put up for auction this week as well.
Made famous by T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia owned seven Brough Superiors in his lifetime, and even died riding an SS100), the Brough Superior SS100 is a historic and iconic piece of two-wheeled history. With only 71 examples of this motorcycle known to still be in existence, this particular SS100 up for acution is not only rare, but being the last of its ilk, is fairly special as well.
Set to be auctioned at Bonhams’s Exceptional Motorcars and Motorcycles auction in Carmel, California on Thursday, the last Brough Superior SS100 made is estimated to hit prices around $350,000 to $400,000 if it sells at auction. Not a bad investment considering a new Brough Superior SS100 cost £170 new back in 1925. Thanks for the tip Dom!

BIKERNET INSURANCE WEEKEND MEMO: YOU GOTTA GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. Check out the BMW 1000cc Superbike. Now, this is a machine worth noting both on roadways and on racetracks.
We Harley-oriented bikers are a loyal bunch for sure. But everyone once in a while a motorbike comes along that gets your attention. That’s where the BMW S 1000cc RR comes in. Introduced to showrooms in 2010, this machine is impressive indeed. Let’s look at a few highlights.
The Engine
A water-cooled, internal combustion, 16-valve, straight in-line-four cylinder powerhouse able to spin over 14,000 RPMs with ease. Engine output is 193 horsepower at 13,000 RPMs, 82.5 lb-ft of torque at 9,750 RPM and lies low for a Beemer at only 455.3 pounds with gas tank full. This is one powerful motor and a bike with a good power-to-weight ratio. The motor’s components are compact and light making the motor itself weigh in at only 131.8 pounds. This is an awesome engine following in the footsteps of BMW’s Formula 1 engine prowess.
Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) & Racing ABS
The bike has an advanced traction control system backed up by state-of-the-art ABS brakes. There’s also an HP Gearshift Assistant that allows for maximum-power cluthless gear up-shifts without the slightest interruption of torque and pulling power. The bike has a tight, stable suspension giving it great traction and top handling performance. The combination of these technical elements allows riders to keep all the power afforded by the engine under tight control.
Aluminium Technology
The frame, swing-arm and even the gas tank is made of aluminium to minimize overall weight and maximize overall torsion strength. This light weight aluminium set up allows for a spectacular power-to-weight ratio that is unmatched in the Supersports bikes around today.
The Bottom Line
The BMW S 1000 RR sets a clear benchmark in terms of riding performance, safety and engineering. It’s a beautiful production-based machine with superb all-around performance. A Superbike like no other from all we hear and see. The bike comes with big power, fast revving capacity, and a solid chassis that allows for excellent handling. It is also affordable when compared to the other Japanese made Superbikes on the market and well below the price tags of similar machines made by Ducati and KTM. Depending on the dealer, prices appear to range between $13,000 and $15,000.
Bonneville 2011 Note:
Bikernet VP, Ray C. Wheeler and Bikernet Insurance CEO, Marc J. Beaulieu will be assisting the Valerie Thompson Racing Team during BUBs Speed Trials coming up on August 27, 2011. RaceGirl Valerie Thompson has teamed up with the racing team of Kerry Alter and Julian Bivins in an attempt to set new land speed records with the BMW 1000 Superbike. Valerie was the pilot of 5-Ball Racing’s record setting bikes in 2006 and 2007. We wish her good luck and safe speed trials as she pursues her record setting dreams on the Salt.
Ride safe out there and best of luck to this year’s class of Bonneville Salt Flat speedsters.

SADDLEMEN UNVEILS SPORTBIKE, CRUISER, ADVENTURE SEATS AND LUGGAGE–
MADISON, Wis. – Whoa. Saddlemen unveiled an avalanche of new product and sales-related info on the Drag and Parts reps rotating through its presentation.
Where to start? The 25-year-old company is launching a big push on selling seats this coming year and plans to increase its dominance in the luggage market. How so? Tons of new products and a big marketing push that includes a redesigned website, prominence in social media outlets, a return to the Progressive International Motorcycle Show Marketplace and adding new enthusiast websites to its advertising campaign, including Bikernet.com.
This aggressive maneuvering in the marketplace is apparent in Saddlemen’s efforts over the last year — 60 new seats for Harley-Davidson applications and 40 new saddles for the metric market.
In the coming year expect to see new products for sportbikes and adventure touring — many of the products borrowing from the bicycle market by featuring a cutout groove to lesson pressure on a rider’s perineum.

New cruiser seats include the Profiler Argyle, a vintage-style seat with a diamond crosshatch pattern that has H-D and metric applications (see pic bottom left). Another new one is Slammed Renegade, a solo bagger saddle co-designed with Covington Cycles.
On the luggage side, Saddlemen has whole families of accessories that include bag liners, organizers, a new tool bag, a new sissy bar bag, and the new Cruis’n Deluxe saddlebag sets that come in either a throw-over style or a rigid mount. One of the families has all a customer needs to deck out his or her Honda Gold Wing.

NEW MOVIES COMING, WILD BUNCH, WILD ONES AND HELLS ANGELS–
Tony Scott Takes on The Wild Bunch Filmmaker Tony Scott is in talks with Warner Bros. to direct a remake of The Wild Bunch. The director is also in discussions to make Hell’s Angels for 20th Century Fox, which will likely be his next project.
We reported back in January that The Wild Bunch is one of several Warner Bros. titles the studio is keen on remaking, although we haven’t heard anything else about the project until now. Brian Helgeland will write the screenplay for this remake, which is still in early development.
As for Hell’s Angels, Tony Scott wants Jeff Bridges to star in the biker drama, which is centered on the 2001 Laughlin riots, where the motorcycle gang became embroiled in a war with rival bikers The Mongols. Jeff Bridges will play Hell’s Angels leader Sonny Barger, but since he already has a busy movie slate, if he agrees to take on the part, Hell’s Angels won’t go before cameras until next spring, at the earliest. Hell’s Angels also focuses on Sonny Barger’s friendship with a young mechanic.
The Wild Bunch was released June 18th, 1969 and stars William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O’Brien, Warren Oates, Jaime Sánchez, Ben Johnson, Emilio Fernández. The film is directed by Sam Peckinpah.
Hell’s Angels comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Tony Scott.

JUDGE DECLARES MISTRIAL, in deadly crash case involving dump truck, motorcycles–
A court official says a mistrial has been declared in the case of a dump truck driver who is accused of driving into a group of motorcyclists , killing four earlier this year.
Michael Jakscht was charged with 16 counts, including manslaughter, aggravated assault and endangerment in the March 25 accident.
Prosecutors alleged Jakscht was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the crash, but Jakscht said during the trial the accident was caused by faulty brakes on the truck he was driving. He also claimed he had taken diet pills.
Jakscht was driving a dump truck when he struck 10 motorcycles and three other vehicles near 27th Avenue and Carefree Highway.
Three riders died at the scene and the fourth died at the hospital. Five other riders were injured, including a Phoenix firefighter.
Court officials say jurors deadlocked Thursday over whether to convict Jakscht of manslaughter and assault.
An August 29 court hearing will determine whether Jakscht will be retried.

BIKERNET WEEKLY FARMER’S MARKET REPORT–Avocados for Heart Health. If you are looking for a tasty food that can help lower cholesterol, regulate blood pressure, and protect against heart disease and stroke, reach for an avocado. This versatile fruit (botanically, it’s actually a large berry), can be used in everything from guacamole to ice cream to soup.
It’s a good source of vitamin K, dietary fiber, potassium and folate. While avocados are very low in sodium and cholesterol-free, don’t overdo it, as they do contain fat, albeit the heart-healthy, monounsaturated kind.
This time of year the Bacon, Fuerto and Zutano varieties are ready to eat – if you buy one that’s hard, you can speed up the ripening process by placing it in a paper bag for a few days.

FREEDOM TO DEFEND YOURSELF–How would you feel if your city erupted into violent chaos and all you had to defend yourself was … an aluminum baseball bat?
That’s been the unfortunate reality for citizens of England in recent weeks. Here’s how an NRA report described the situation:
London and other UK cities look like war zones and their citizens are afraid to venture out, because the danger is very real …
… it was reported this week that sales of one type of aluminum baseball bat on Amazon UK rose 6,541 percent.
In many places, it was reported that police were unable to stop the mayhem. As a result, panicked, defenseless law-abiding citizens were forced to flee their homes, while others watched as their businesses were destroyed …
An August 11 Herald Sun article reported one resident as saying, “its absolute bedlam on the street. People have been openly looting for an hour, two hours, and the police have been ineffectual.
“They’ve done nothing,” Another victim, who was trapped in her hair salon in Clapham Junction while a mob smashed its way in and trashed it, said, “They were mocking us, [saying] ‘look, look, they look scared’. Where is the police? I want protection. This is what they’re here for . . . I’m not secure at my workplace. I’m not secure at my home place. Will they be there to protect us tonight? They weren’t here to protect us last night.”
The Telegraph.com.au reported on Tuesday that mobs were forcing hapless victims to strip off their clothes while being robbed, and described a shocking video that shows a bleeding, already-pummeled teenager being robbed in broad daylight by lawless thugs who pretend to help him to his feet, and then steal the contents of his backpack while he can barely remain standing, much less defend himself.
This is what a disarmed country looks like. This is how little is left when free men and women surrender their right to own a firearm.
We’re fortunate to be citizens of the United States, where we have the Second Amendment to protect our right to bear arms and enable us to be prepared for situations like this. But just as our Constitution is unique, so is our tradition of firearm ownership. The rest of the world looks upon us as barbarians clinging to our guns while they, supposedly, have evolved beyond such primitive ideas.

BIKERS FOR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS–
HOLLY HILL — When Bikers for First Amendment Rights opened a private club on Ridgewood Avenue in October 2005, City Commissioner John Penny had his doubts.
“I didn’t think a biker bar would be good for our community,” he recalled.
Nearly six years later, that club is about to move six blocks north to become a next-door neighbor to the office for Penny’s Allstate insurance agency.
He couldn’t be happier.
The commissioner said he has come to greatly respect and admire the club, which he no longer considers a “biker bar” but rather a community-service group that happens to have some bikers as members.
“Crazy” Eddie Colosimo, founder and president of the all-volunteer nonprofit organization, said despite his group’s name, bikers account for less than half of its more than 2,000 members. Those members, he said, come from throughout Volusia and Flagler counties.
On Tuesday, the Bikers for First Amendment Rights’ private club is set to reopen in its new home: the former Diamondbacks Steakhouse & Sports Bar building at 745 Ridgewood Ave.
The 6,100-square-foot former Diamondbacks building offers 1,300 square feet more space than the club’s previous location and also has more parking and better visibility, said Tammy Bratcher, the organization’s general manager.
Diamondbacks closed its doors Aug. 5.
Bratcher said the club, which has signed a five-year lease, will offer a full kitchen and bar and be open 365 days a year. The club will offer pool tables, dart boards, a Wii videogame system, and occasionally live music and dances. Membership dues are $25 a year. Nonmembers can make up to three visits as guests.
The new sign will have some changes in wording compared to the club’s old sign. Instead of stating “Fraternal Order of Volusia Citizens B.F.F.A.R. Post 1,” the sign will read “Americans for First Amendment Rights B.F.F.A.R. Post 1,” Colosimo said.
The organization itself will continue to be called Bikers for First Amendment Rights, he said.
Regardless of what the organization calls itself, Penny said, “They’ve proved to be a good neighbor and don’t deserve the label ‘biker bar.’ ” He likened the club to an “Elks Lodge or a Moose Lodge.”

— Jane Feather, Reckless Angel
When Lord Cranbourne cocked up his toes, Aunt Imogen had been left a jointure that made the earl’s children gnash their teeth and mutter darkly about undue influence.
— Lauren Willig, The Seduction of the Crimson Rose
Jointure stems from the Latin junctura, “join.”
The bikers argue that the measure is a complete non-sense as accidents are largely caused by car drivers not, watching out for motorcyclists on the roads and not being adequately trained to share the roads with them. The bikers also argue that the measure is proposed to enable the government to cash in thousands of euros a day from bikers who choose not to wear a high visibility jacket. The French government is accused of not being concerned about what bikers may wear underneath that high visibility vest for their own safety in case they fall off their bike. As long as they wear the fluorescent vest, that’s all what counts.
10 September 2011 will definitely not be a good day to visit France as enormous delays on all major roads nationwide will be caused by the angry bikers, who will bring the whole country to a complete standstill, like they did on 18 June 2011. Riders from the neighbouring United Kingdom who wish to join the demonstrations in France and support their French cousins can do so by disembarking in Calais and joining a protest group nearby (don’t forget to bring your passport, motorcycle insurance certificate and license). We will post further details nearer the time to enable UK riders to plan their trip to France.

THERE YOU HAVE IT–Do me a favor. If you deal with any of the companies mentions on Bikernet, let them know that you read about their company or product on Bikernet.
We are planning a board meeting tomorrow with the Never-a-dull-Moment Bikernet Team to discuss the new Cantina Back Stage Crew. We are printing new 15th Anniversary stickers, new patches, new membership cards, etc.
Ray Wheeler and I worked on Mudflap girl yesterday and discussed our over-loaded project list. It would take me all day to report on our projects. Nyla was right, we need to slow down. Good fuckin’ luck.
Here’s what’s flying at Bikernet for this coming week: We have the hot GOB I’ve been working on. I’m about to publish another chapter of Tides. Buckshot’s bike feature is complete. I’m working with Don Whalen on a feature on his one-off 1914 Zucker Special, plus we have the latest Coast-to-Coast legislative news from the National Coalition of Motorcyclists. I’m working on a transmission Re-man tech with JIMS. They can take your old trans and make it new again, or pump it up to a five or six speed. I’m also working with Bennett’s performance on an Evo rebuild as sort of a comparison against the Harley reman process.
The Harley Re-man process is very cool and makes your engine like new. There’s just one problem with their system. You get a bone stock 80-inch engine back. A shop like Bennett’s with Branch O’keefe next door can do virtually anything you need to an engine, from headwork and shaved heads, with a hot rod cam, to big inch barrels, stroker kits, and balancing. We will bring you a full report on this process in the near future.
Rigid Frame Richard just sent in his Sturgis Report and 40 photos. Hang on.
Okay, so it’s Never-a-Dull-Moment around the Bikernet Interplanetary Algea BioFuels Factory, good god. Let’s go for a ride.
Ride Forever,
