SUNNY SUNDAY POST

Hey,

Life is strange and hectic. We constantly ask ourselves, “Can we do more?” I thinks it’s a question much of our society is asking. You have your family and a job, maybe a project (like a chopper), a religion, a charity you look after, a club, community activities, a pet or two, and maybe a sport. Holy shit, add to that a blackberry, facebook, twitter, e-mails, your favorite TV show, and you can’t have one minute in a day to ponder your navel.

Some folks relish in the hectic world of overload-dom, but we’re questioning the A-Book, madman mantra and searching for quality over quantity. Could it be possible to slow down, yet deliver better, more refined content to our readers? Hell, it’s the nature of our universe, swim or sink. I still have time for Whiskey and a ride. Let’s hit the news:

BIKERNET IS TRYING TO SET UP SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOF OF THE INTERPLANETARY HEADQUARTERS–
We have not been set up yet with Kryocera, but are in the process. The best invert I have heard is from Outback. They are on the net. I have a couple people who advertise with me who are into it, one being Emarine. Good people.

BIKERNET INSURANCE HEALTH INSURANCE INVESTIGATES DISCRIMINATION LOOPHOLE–Thank you for contacting the AMA regarding the status of the health insurance discrimination loophole and thank you for your life membership with the AMA.

With regards to the HIPAA loophole, in March of 2009 the House of Representatives passed AMA supported legislation that requires insurance companies to disclose activities that policies will not cover at the point-of-sale. This was a compromise on the full legislation submitted that would have closed the loophole. H.R. 1253 was passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 422 – 3 before being passed to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The Senate has yet to consider the legislation.

The passage for H.R. 1253 demonstrated a willingness from Congress to consider the issue of source of injury discrimination in health insurance policies. However, many Members of Congress are not yet able to support a bill that would close the loophole on these kinds of benefit exclusions without examples of discrimination from their constituents.

Riders can have a significant role in helping pass the disclosure bill right now and getting the moment going behind full relief from discrimination in the next Congress. We encourage you to contact your Senators to consider and pass H.R. 1253 to bring attention back to the issue of insurance benefit discrimination before the close of this year.

Also, if you have been denied coverage for an injury sustained while legally operating your motorcycle or off-highway vehicle, contact me to provide your story and help make the case for passing legislation to close the HIPAA loophole. If you have not been injured, but do have a policy that would deny you coverage for a motorcycle or off-highway vehicle related incident, the AMA can use that information, too. If this is not the case for you personally, but it is for someone you know, please feel free to pass my information along so they can get in touch with me.

Thank you again for your inquiry.

THUNDER-HEART IGNITIONS FOR CRAZYHORSE ENGINES–
I have your ignition module on my CrazyHorse engine. The basic one. I have a
terrible time with a mid range stumble. I even changed carbs. Could it be
the timing is off? Could it be that the coil is wrong for this system? I’m running the dual-fire system.

If your ignition is the single fire performance upgrade with a three post
coil it should ohm around 3ohms from center to either end post. Do you have the
software and link cable for it? If you do you could experiment with a timing curve
change in your problem area. Call me.

NEW BOOK COMING FROM WOLFGANG, EXCLUSIVE PUBLISHER TO THE BIKERNET BOOK STORE — Sturgis is not only the biggest motorcycle event, it’s also the oldest. The year 2010 marks the 70th anniversary of this uniquely American event.
The Sturgis 70th Anniversary book captures both the history of Sturgis past, and the energy and electricity that is Sturgis now.

The Black Hills are even older than Sturgis. The History section starts with the hills, the earliest inhabitants, and then describes how a camp out in the back yard of the local Indian Motorcycle dealer grew into an event that attracts upwards of half a million motorcycle riders each year.
More than just a biker party, Sturgis includes hundreds of Events within the event. This photo-intensive section includes images from the numerous bike shows and concerts.

The heart of Sturgis is Main Street. Another photo intensive section, these images highlight the best tattoos, the sexiest bar tenders and the energy that makes Main Street a must-see.
What makes Sturgis the ideal place for a biker bash is the Riding – the two lane highways that twist and turn through the Black Hills and across the rolling prairie. Maps, photos and first-person stories, give both old and new riders someplace to go.
Having fun while staying out of trouble is easier with a Sturgis Survival Guide. This section includes tips on everything from riding in a pack to a list of emergency phone numbers.
With 144 pages and over 500 color photos and illustrations, Sturgis 70th Anniversary is both a look at years gone by, and a planning guide for anyone planning to make the pilgrimage to that little town on the western edge of South Dakota.

THE SALT WASN’T NICE TO BIKERNET THIS YEAR– Sorry to hear you had some mechanical troubles at Bonneville. Would have loved to be there. I’m still pissed about not going. The trip my company sent me on was totally fucking useless. I flew over Bonneville and could see the track from 37,000 feet. I knew you guys were down there somewhere. Felt like doing a DB Cooper and jumping out…

MASTER KNIFE MAKER PASSES–  R.W. ‘Bob’ Loveless dies at 81; master knife-maker
To many hunters, collectors and fellow bladesmen, the Riverside resident crafted the best handmade knives in the modern world. He was known for fixed-blade knives with unsurpassed workmanship.

R.W. “Bob” Loveless, who made some of the world’s most coveted sporting cutlery by refining knife design to high art, has died. He was 81.

Loveless died Sept. 2 of lung cancer at his longtime home in Riverside, said his friend Jack Lucarelli.

“He is the Picasso of the knife world and the father of 20th century knife-making,” said John Denton, an authority on Loveless knives. “His design is what made him famous.”

BIKERNET FINANCIER STOCK REPORT–I don’t know about you, but I’d rather buy old motorcycles than stock in anything right now. But I recently reached out to our Bikernet stock market guru. He’s an old fart and believes that if you are forced to buy stock instead of something real, like real estate, then buy a utility stock that pays a healthy dividend.
Here’s his line-up of seeming safe utility stocks:

Here’s a list of the utilities we own, stock symbol, and dividend….

American Elect. Power AEP 5.39 @ $31.46
Alliant Energy LNT 5% @ $31.14
Edison Intl EIX 3.98% @ $31.71
Nest Era Energy NEE 3.98% @ 50.59
Great Plains Energy GXP 4.75% @ $17.19
Hawaiian Elect. HE 5.66% @ $21.88
Iberdola (Brazil Elect.) IBDRY 5.13 % @ $ 26.75
OGE Energy OGE 4.07% @ $ 35.58
Otter Tail Corp. OTTR 4.14% @ $19.53
Pacific Gas & Elect. PCG 4.40% @ $41.76
Pinnacle Wes Capital PNW 6% @ $35.17
Public Service of New Mexico PNM 4.12% @ $12.28
Sempra Energy SRE 3.43% @ $46.10
Southern Co. SO 5.5% @ $33.62

One of the reasons to buy a utility is that the usually have a long history of paying dividends. They are relatively dependable. Another reason, they generally are priced between $10 and $40. If they go over $40 they are likely to split (giving you twice as many shares) They tend to pay high dividends.

ALTERNATIVE TO HIP REPLACEMENT–  While in Bonneville I spoke to Scooter, the salt photographer, who recently survived knee replacement surgery. He told me of a Laughlin surgeon who replaces cartilage over messing with the entire bone structure. With very slight incisions, he can slip replacement pad into the joints for better mobility and no damage to the bone structure. We decided to investigate.

“I just got this from my friend Dr Robert Lock in Laughlin. Bobbie is a really good guy and stays very close to all that is new,” said Scooter today.”

“Hi Scooter. I would be happy to evaluate your friend. Have him call and ask for Sue or Hope. The office number is 928-758-1175. I can spend some time with him and give him my opinions regarding his best course of action. If your friend has any x-rays and can email them to me, I can get suggest whether any other studies need to be done prior to his evaluation. Some patients actually take a photo of their x-rays with their cell phone or camera and email them to me for an opinion. If he doesn’t have any x-rays, no big deal as we can take them at my office as well.”

THE KRYLON JOHN REPORT ON MEDICAL LSD– I woke up this morning feeling like Martians had robbed my brain, and I guess it was because today is my oldest dog’s 11th birthday. It got me to reminiscing about some of the things that have happened in the last eleven years. On September 9. 1999, I went from owning two dogs to owning nine. The experience was a whole new deal — No, I take that back now that I think about it, it was just like when I was a kid and the family cat had kittens. Talk about forgetting the past and allowing history to repeat itself.

Just like with all the kittens I immediately gave each puppy a name and then it was impossible for me to part with them. Having eight Lab-Pit mixes and one Pit Bull mama running around my small stucco domicile did turn into kind of a big hassle. What once used to be a semi-green lawn turned into a dust bowl, and I was beginning to wonder if there was a category in the Guinness book of world records for having the most dog shit in one’s backyard.

Drifting further I got to thinking about how much faster time flies as one gets older and pondered if it might be something that could be addressed by the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to dispensing medical marijuana, the state of California could endorse medical LSD. There’s no way in hell to describe to someone, who has never dropped acid, what it does to time perception, or anything else for that matter, but trust me it’s radical. I never was a big “acidhead” in the late ’60s. I dropped acid only a few times before I decided that squirting acrylic lacquer onto motorcycle tanks and then laying flames was a lot more fun. That said, I did get enough of a taste to speak knowledgeably 40-years later on the subject, and I believe medical LSD should be legalized for people like me who are having a hard time with this aging bullshit.

I’m right in the middle of writing a book on classic Ford trucks. One of the things that I’m covering has to do with which tools a person might want to own before they tear into anything. This lead me to sorting out 40-years worth of a tool collection, and taking pictures. It’s funny, because now that I think of it, I made my living as a technical editor, and a lot of my tools can be found pictured on the Internet. Here’s a link to a tool story I did for Hot Bike magazine while Bandit, and I were working there — those were wild times, but that’s another story. Checkout the photo of the silver and red Craftsman box perched on top of a Craftsman 75th anniversary box and you’ll see a David Mann painting with a silver and red Craftsman box peeking out behind it.

The guy welding in the print, as with most of the characters portrayed in David’s paintings, was a friend of Dave’s. Another dusty item caught my eye and proved I don’t clean parts of my garage very often, was the can of David Mann Red paint seen in the upper left hand corner of the photo. It’s the same can I used to paint David’s bike around 1994 (I don’t remember the exact year, it might come to me later), and then it was used to paint the burial urn we made for Dave in 2004. Speaking about time really flying, 9-10-11 would have been David’s 71st birthday.

Wow, 9-9-99, and 9-10-11, that’s enough numbers for me, I’ve got to register to obtain a medical LSD card from the state of California and get down to writing some serious book content.

BIKERNET OVERWORKED ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SUNDAY WORD OF THE DAY–
gerrymander JER-i-man-der, verb:

The dividing of a state, county, etc., into election districts so as to give one political party a majority in many districts while concentrating the voting strength of the other party into as few districts as possible.

To appease aggravated fan bases, the league will gerrymander the early non-divisional, non-crossover scheduling to allow Wisconsin to play both Nebraska and Iowa in 2011 and 2012.
— Scott Dochterman, “Final guesses on Big Ten divisional realignment,” Doc’s Office blog, gazetteonline.com, September 2010.

They could not, though, tire of the unilateral focus upon feathering the rich’s pockets and gerrymander the system.
— Carlene Hatcher Polite, Pierre Alien, The Flagellants

Gerrymander is named after E. Gerry (governor of Massachusetts, whose party redistricted the state in 1812) + (sala)mander, from the fancied resemblance of the map of Essex County, Mass., to this animal, after the redistricting.

NRA GUN NUT REPORT– Bloomberg Further Disgraces Himself In Latest Anti-Gun Pitch

No one in this country knows better than New Yorkers what “devastation” looks like. On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center buildings and their surrounding area were reduced to rubble, burying nearly 3,000 Americans. To this day, the images are difficult to comprehend; they show a concentration of man-made destruction unprecedented in the United States and perhaps anywhere on Earth.

New York’s current murder rate pales in comparison to that of 2001, of course. But it also pales in comparison to what it was in other years gone by. Due in part to crime-fighting programs adopted under former mayor Rudolph Giuliani, New York City’s murder rate is only a fifth of what it was 20 years ago.

Presumably, New Yorkers are well aware of the relative safety in which they live today. However, the current mayor, Michael Bloomberg, has a skewed perspective even though the September 11 anniversary is front and center in every news outlet today due to other controversies.

With New York City’s and the nation’s murder rates lower than anytime since the 1960s, Bloomberg sounded the alarm, saying “Illegal guns and their accompanying violence devastate communities across our country.”

Bloomberg revisited his perennial cause célèbre —gun control—because his anti-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), has issued an Issue Brief urging Congress to “close the gun show loophole”—gun control supporters’ Orwellian “doublespeak” for “prohibit private sales of firearms at gun shows and everywhere else.”

Since U.S. crime rates are so low, MAIG invoked Mexico’s war with its drug cartels, repeating the soundbite first heard in 2009, when Attorney General Eric Holder tried to use Mexico’s problem as the excuse for reinstating the federal “assault weapons” ban. “In fact, 90% of guns recovered and traced from Mexican crime scenes originated from gun dealers in the United States,” MAIG says.

Discovering that geography is more than a subject taught in elementary and middle schools, MAIG adds its revelation that “four in ten of the U.S. guns recovered in Mexico between 2006 and 2009 were originally sold by gun dealers in Texas. The three other states that share a border with Mexico – Arizona, California, and New Mexico – were the source for another one-third of the U.S. guns.”

Of course, the operative words in the “90 percent” soundbite are “and traced.” The GAO has already reported that most guns seized in Mexico, from cartels or anyone else, have not originated in the United States. For example, GAO noted, “In 2008, of the almost 30,000 firearms that the Mexican Attorney General’s office said were seized, only around 7,200, or approximately a quarter, were submitted to ATF for tracing.” The others were not submitted for tracing, presumably in many cases because their markings indicated that they were not traceable to the U.S.

For all their effort, Bloomberg and MAIG got scant coverage by the news media. But the debate will likely continue over how many guns are smuggled from the U.S. to Mexico, what percentage of the cartels’ guns originate in the U.S., and from which countries the cartels obtain their machine guns, grenades and other weapons that are unavailable in the United States.

One thing is sure, however: Americans have greater access to U.S. guns than does anyone in Mexico, and our murder rates pale in comparison to those of our southern neighbor. For example, the murder rate of Juarez is nearly 100 times higher than that of El Paso, just across the border. If anything, that’s a criticism of Mexican laws, which prohibit honest people from getting guns with which to protect themselves.

TIME FOR A RIDE–I’m starting the 5th turbulent chapter in a book about a 1%er who was the boss of his club for over two decades. We speak about the past almost daily. We have an agreement. There won’t be any club against club dialog in this historic novel. This page turner doesn’t need it. You won’t believe the shit this club survived and fought, just to stay in the wind. Wish me luck next week. Maybe I can rough out another sizzling series of chapters.

I’ve started to work on the final Bonneville 2010 report. I should have it nailed this coming week. I’m mentally working on a chapter of Bandit’s Cantina, the soap opera, and Peter Linney is shooting a new girl of Bikernet next week with this bobber. Plus he’s going to shoot a touring Dyna Glide created by Roger Goldammer, recently. It’s a very sharp bike. You’ll see it soon on Bikernet.

I’m going to build my son the mudflap girl Evo/FXR next year. We are going to promote the FXR vs. the Dyna debate all next year. Brass Balls bobbers is now building FXR models, and they’re still the most popular H-D model, and we are still fans of the Evo engine configuration, and you’ll see some economical Evo performance engine upgrades as we run through the build. Evos will keep lots of riders on the road inexpensively for years to come.

Felicia Morgan called yesterday to report on the Cannonball Rally. I’m looking forward to her next article and her terrific photos of pre-1916 motorcycles in the wind. They are now about three days out. We’ll cover it next week. The El Camino Antique motorcycle swap is coming fast. I’m shooting to have the Peashooter on display, and maybe the 5-Ball Factory Racer. We are boring the Peashooter cylinder and lowering the compression. The Factory Racer is about to experience a new Thunder-heart ignition system. This time we may shift to single fire. Hang on.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
