SUPER SUNDAY POST ACTION

Hey,

Another amazing day in paradise. I woke up this morning feeling like I was attacked by the hangover king, but I had one short Jack on the rocks last night and watched an amazing 1940 Rita Hayworth movie. The movie was written, produced, and directed by the same guy. Amazing, what folks can do, if they put their minds to it.

It’s also amazing how little others do, then demand that someone gives them the rewards for hard word. I joke that kids want to be treated like Rock Stars, but they have no rocks. Somewhere they lost the link from accomplishment to rewards.

Okay, no negative waves. All is positive around the Bikernet headquarters. We are reorganizing the shop, preparing for the new year, and I’m working on a new book outline. Never a dull moment. Let’s hit the news, then I’ll spill my guts on what’s headed your way next week on Bikernet.

BIKERNET FINANCIAL NEGOTIATION DISCUSSION LESSON–
One rainy spring night in Dublin, a taxi driver spotted an arm waving from the shadows of an alley. Even before he rolled to a stop at the curb, a figure leaped into the cab and slammed the door. Checking his rear view mirror as he pulled away, he was startled to see a dripping wet, naked woman sitting in the back seat.

“Where to?” he stammered.

“Vale Road,” answered the woman.

“OK,” he said, taking another long glance in the mirror.

The woman caught him staring at her and asked, “Just what the hell are you looking at?'”

“Well lady, replied the driver, I noticed that you’re completely naked, and I was just wondering how you’ll pay your fare.”

The woman spread her legs, put her feet up on the front seat, smiled at the driver and said, “Does this answer your question?”

Still looking in the mirror, the cabbie asked, “Got anything smaller?”

“CALL TO ACTION” Motorcycle Helmet Law Modification in Michigan–
This release is being sent to you at the request of ABATE of Michigan. Please direct any questions or comments to ABATE of Michigan

From: Vince Consiglio, President, ABATE of Michigan
To: MRF, All States SMRO
From: Vince Consiglio, President, ABATE of Michigan

RE: “Call to Action” Motorcycle Helmet Law Modification in Michigan

ABATE of Michigan would like the help of all motorcyclists in their fight for freedom. Senate Bill 291 passed the Michigan Senate with a 24 YES vote to 14 NO vote in late June. We want to thank all those activists who sent a post card to Governor Snyder over the summer. SB 291 passed the Michigan House of Representatives with a 69 YES to 39 NO on November 2nd. The bill must pass a “concurrence vote” in the state senate and then will go to the governor. A letter from a “FREE” State may help him realize Michigan loses motorcycle money every day of the summer with a mandatory helmet law. Governor Snyder prides himself on being all about business and helping business. Please urge Governor Snyder to support adult choice.

MAIL to :Governor Rick Snyder

Thanks for helping us in our efforts.

Thanks again,

Vince Consiglio President, ABATE of Michigan

Michigan is on the verge of repealing their mandatory helmet law and have managed to get the $100,000 medical insurance requirement down to $20,000. The bill (SB291) is currently in the Senate (after passing the House) and the Governor has not indicated that he will veto it.

This link is to a survey being hosted by a Detroit newspaper and riders are being asked to vote “NO” on the survey that asks if helmets should be mandatory.

Thanks for your help.

MUDFLAP GIRL UNDER FIRE–
“Mudflap Girl” Challenged For Obscenity In Montana.

And you’ll never guess who is arguing for and against her Practically everyone who has driven a car or paused at a truck-stop has seen a silhouette of a naked woman either on the mud-flaps of a truck or as an air freshener dangling from the rear-view mirror. But to at least one citizen, it is an obscenity so objectionable, they want the police involved.

The back window of an SUV in Montana has become the battleground over whether the familiar naked lady silhouette should be displayed or not. Two residents are arguing before local officials about whether the image is obscene.

Ironically, it is a woman, Shanna Weaver of Great Falls, who has the sticker on the rear window of her SUV that depicts a woman’s silhouette above the word “SKIN.” Great Falls resident Brian Smith, meanwhile, parks across the street from Weaver’s SUV on a daily basis and says he should not be forced to endure what he considers to be a sacrilegious display of the human body.

Is the sticker obscene?
YesNoVote

“My upbringing dictates that the human body is a sacred thing, not something that should be put on display,” Smith told The Great Falls Tribune.

The logo itself appears to be from Skin Industries, an organization that dubs itself a “Sports Fashion” company. The sticker is akin to the famous mudflap girl silhouette that’s often seen on tractor trailer trucks. It contains no shadowing but is more detailed than the famous and ubiquitous mudflap girl.

Weaver and Smith have discussed it, with Weaver taking the opinion that her First Amendment rights make the sticker perfectly acceptable.

“It’s my freedom of speech, which he can’t take away,” Weaver told The Tribune. “It’s no different from the mud flaps that you see on trucks.”

Smith, on the other hand, feels it’s obscenity and has taken his complaint the local police. Not surprisingly, the officer sent to investigate the dispute said the sticker was not obscene and the dispute has never made it beyond a mere complaint with the Great Falls Police Department.

But this issue accentuates an ongoing debate about what constitutes obscenity within the public space. With many obscenity laws often employing vague and subjective language, issues like this will continue to arise, especially as people continue to elect to express themselves via their vehicles.

Sound off in the poll above about whether or not you think the Skin Industries graphic is obscene, or let us know what you really think in the comments.

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT, NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT– National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act Scheduled for House Floor on Tuesday—Contact Your U.S. Representative Immediately!

H.R. 822—the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011” is scheduled for a vote on the U.S. House floor this Tuesday, November 15. We’ve told you the truth about why the legislation is very good for gun owners and now it is imperative that you contact your U.S. Representative IMMEDIATELY and urge him or her to vote for H.R. 822 WITH NO AMENDMENTS.

The bill will enable America’s millions of permit holders to exercise their right to self-defense while traveling outside their home states by requiring states to recognize each others’ lawfully-issued carry permits, just as they recognize driver’s licenses and carry permits held by armored car guards.

H.R. 822 does not create a federal licensing or registration system; does not establish a minimum federal standard for the carry permit; does not involve the federal bureaucracy in setting standards for carry permit; and it does not destroy or discourage the adoption of permitless carry systems such as those in Arizona, Alaska, Vermont and Wyoming.

MOTORCYCLE ART OF THE WEEK– For your viewing pleasure.

BIKERNET TECH INVESTIGATION–
We switched out the ignition system in the Salt Shaker, 120-inch, Outlaw Panhead engine, built by Accurate Engineering. We installed a Dyna S from Biker’s Choice. As is turns out, a stock distributor turns clockwise, whereas the cone motor ignition rotor turns counter-clockwise. Fortunately S&S makes a gear to reverse the distributor, but we also reached out to the Dynatek.

Based on your description it does sound like you might be 180 degrees out of phase. Did you swap the black and white wires from what the instructions say? With the reverse rotation of the engine with a single fire ignition the black wire should go to the front cylinder and the white to the rear.

I spoke to Berry Wardlaw and he said that won’t work because of the advance weights. At first I agreed, then I tested the weights. Doesn’t matter if you turn them clockwise or counter-clockwise, they still expand outward. But later it dawned on me. The rotor is advancing it in a counter-clockwise direction now. I checked the weights, and no matter which way it turns it will advance the rotor in a counter-clockwise direction. So you’re right, the timing may be off, but it should work without changing the gear. But, is the rotor still advancing or retarding? The questions contine…

SPEAKING OF OBSCURE FACTS WE STUMBLED INTO THE BIKERNET ENGLISH PROFESSOR AND HE JUST SHOOK HIS POINTED HEAD AND SAID–
obscurantism uhb-SKYOORr-uhn-tiz-uhm, noun:

1. Opposition to the increase and spread of knowledge.
2. Deliberate obscurity or evasion of clarity.

Of course they’re not. That’s why there were all those confrontations, all that aggression and obscurantism. Because the forces of darkness are dying, and they are thrown back on such things as a last resort.

— Paulo Coelho, The Witch of Portobello

In these he had shown himself a stalwart champion of Christian doctrine at its most precise and purest, equally remote from the modern laxity and obscurantism of the past.

— Albus Camus, The Plague

Obscurantism originally comes from the Latin root obscur meaning “dark” and the suffix -ant which turned a verb into a noun (as in the word servant), so the word literally meant “one that makes dark.”

CONNECTING THE DOTS–Hope you’re well and still connecting the dots, as you continue to do so well for us in the industry. I wondered if you knew Andy Goldfine with Aerostitch RiderWearhouse. Andy also started Ride to Work Day. After the Mythbusters segment on bikes it occurred to me that Andy is a definite “dot” you might like to “connect” with.

As you’ll see below, I sent your email on to Andy – he has developed a lot of great material over the years, particularly related to the efficiency of motorcycles in conjunction with RTW day, but also useful in other venues. His website is http://www.ridetowork.org and I love the sections he artfully identifies as “propaganda.”

Anyone who talks about the “internal humanscape” benefits of riding is definitely one of us, I don’t care what kind of two-wheeler he pilots!

IRON WORKS EDITOR LAID OFF–
I wanted to let you know that I am no longer working with IronWorks Magazine as Editor-in-Chief, as of yesterday morning, 11/11/11 (there really is something about that number…..)

Anyway, I received a call from Dianne Sullivan @ Hatton-Brown, whom most of you know, in the morning, informing me my services would no longer be needed, that the call was not performance related in the least and that she couldn’t tell me much more.

Asking what she’d like me to relay folks in way of explanation, she said, “I can’t say”.

I think it’s been obvious, I really enjoy working with folks in the industry, manufacturers, builders and bike owners, it’s a treat working with this diverse population of talented and colorful folks and I am hopeful I can remain in the V-Twin industry in a meaningful capacity.

Harley-Davidson RECALL a quarter-million motorcycles for rear brake light fix– The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Harley-Davidson is recalling certain model-year 2009-2012 touring and CVO touring motorcycles and trikes to change-out the rear brake light switch.

Vehicles affected were manufactured between June 6, 2008, and Sept. 16, 2011. It’s estimated that the number of vehicles affected slightly exceed 250,000 in the United States and 300,000 worldwide, according to NHTSA. (For a list of the models involved in this recall, click here.)

Excessive heat from the exhaust system “may cause the switch to not activate the brake lamp, or activate the brake lamp when no brake is applied, and/or cause a brake fluid leak at the brake light switch, affecting rear brake performance. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash,” NHTSA stated.

The Motor Co. is notifying owners. Dealers are asked to install a rear brake light switch kit free of charge. The recall is expected to begin around Oct. 31.

THE MOTORCYCLE NUMBERS GAME–
Yamaha reports declining U.S. retail sales through September– Dealers in the U.S. retailed about 52,000 new Yamaha motorcycles and scooters during the first nine months of the year, down 13 percent from the 60,000 they retailed during the same period last year. The corresponding figures for Yamaha ATVs: 26,000, down 24 percent from 34,000.

The numbers are part of Yamaha Motor Co.’s financial filings for the third quarter. The company does not note whether ATV sales include side-by-sides.

During the first nine months, overall U.S. retail sales of motorcycles and scooters grew a half of a percentage point to 370,738, according the Motorcycle Industry Council. Overall ATV sales (not including side-by-sides) declined 16 percent to 156,672.

Other statistics for Yamaha:

* Nine-month U.S. motorcycle and scooter wholesales: 39,000 units, up 30 percent from 30,000 units the year before.
* Nine-month U.S. ATV wholesales: 26,000 units, down 7 percent from 28,000 units.
* Third-quarter U.S. motorcycle and scooter retail sales: 15,000 units, down 21 percent from 19,000 units.
* Third-quarter U.S. motorcycle and scooter wholesales: 13,000 units, up 333 percent from 3,000 units.
* Third-quarter ATV retail sales: 8,000 units, down 27 percent from 11,000 units.
* Third-quarter ATV wholesales: 9,000 units, down 31 percent from 13,000 units.
* U.S. motorcycle and scooter inventory (includes wholesales and dealer inventory) at the end of September: 47,000 units, down 20 percent from 59,000 units.
* U.S. ATV inventory at the end of September: 29,000, down 28 percent from 40,000.

For perspective on the inventory levels, note that U.S. Yamaha motorcycle inventory at the beginning of 2009 stood at about 136,000 units. About 68,000 Yamaha ATVs were in stock at the time, according to the OEM.

Yamaha Motor Co.’s net worldwide sales for the first nine months of the year were flat, dropping 0.2 percent to 986 billion yen. The company claims the decline was due to foreign exchange conversion losses of 51.8 billion yen, which offset rises in sales of motorcycles and outboard motors in emerging markets.

Yamaha’s net income for the period rose 29 percent to 40 billion yen.

The 4 3/8-inch Darkhorse Crankworks lower end will arrive at Bennett’s Performance, Tuesday from the frozen East coast. The Twin Cam heads from Branch/O’Keefe are a work-of-art, the combustion chambers are 83cc, with a microscopic fishhook finish for maximum flow and fuel mixture, rather than the 85cc factory cast finish. Factory valves are replaced with larger stem, high performance intake and exhaust valves for less air restriction on the intake and exhaust side, plus they weigh less, especially when topped off with Titanium collars and keepers.

We’re looking for a Raptor .630 lift cam kit from Fueling to arrive any minute along with a set of Crane roller rockers, made by S&S, to top off the Branch/O’Keefe flowed heads. We’re building one fine, precision air pump.

You’ll see it first on Bikernet, soon!

Thanks to a couple of key industry icons, the project is nearing entry into the throttle body market, with a bang.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER RESEARCH RESULTS--Natural Treatment for Migraines Last week we explored four ways to help prevent migraines. This week we discuss butterbur (Petasites hybridus), a natural treatment that may be especially beneficial for migraine sufferers who prefer not to take strong prescription medications.

Butterbur is native to Europe, northern Africa and southwestern Asia, and has been used for centuries for headaches, back pain, and asthma. Research suggests its actions – reducing inflammation and spasms in blood-vessel walls – may ameliorate migraine without causing the side effects associated with prescription medications. A study published in Neurology, Dec. 28, 2004 reported that after four months, people taking 75 mg of butterbur had 48 percent fewer migraine attacks per month – similar to the effects of prescription migraine drugs. Be very careful about the butterbur you purchase – only use butterbur extracts that are guaranteed to be free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. The adult dosage ranges from 50-100 mg twice daily, and should be taken with meals.

Other natural alternatives include dietary measures, such as identifying and avoiding foods that trigger your headaches, as well as taking prescription strength doses of vitamin B2 to reduce the frequency and duration of migraines. Be sure to talk with your physician about the risks and benefits of any therapy.

NEWS FROM THE BIKERNET BARBER SHOP–A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.

His father said he’d make a deal with his son: ‘ You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible, and get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about the car.’

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he’d settle for the offer, and they agreed on it.

After about six weeks his father said, ‘Son, you’ve brought your grades up and I’ve observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I’m disappointed you haven’t had your hair cut.

The boy said, ‘ You know, Dad, I’ve been thinking about that, and I’ve noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair ~ ~ ~ and there’s even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.’

You’re going to love the Dad’s reply:

‘Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?’

ONE CORPORATION IS BUYING UP GUN COMPANIES–For the last several years a company called “The Freedom Group” has been buying up American gun and ammunition manufacturers. http://www.freedom-group.com/

Some of these companies are:
Bushmaster
Marlin,
Remington,
DPMS,
Dakota Arms and
H&R.
DPMS Panther Arms
NEF
Dakota Arms
LC Smith
Parker
AAC
Barnes Bullets
EOTAC

INTC

Some people worry that Freedom Group is going to control most of the firearms companies in the United States. Of course, If you control the manufacturers you can decide not to sell to civilians, or, you can raise the prices to ridiculous levels or you can make the supply of guns and ammo scarce – all sorts of logjams.

What a perfect way to control America’s guns!

If you do some digging you will see that The Freedom Group is owned by a Wall Street investment company called “Cerberus Capital Management”.

“Cerberus” in the epic book “The Inferno” by Dante Alighieri, is a three-headed demon hound (from Roman mythology) that guards the Gates of Hell to prevent those damned souls who have just crossed the river Styx, from escaping back to the world.

Investor GEORGE SOROS owns Cerberus!

Here’s a comment from this web site: Cerberus is big enough to make waves in Washington. Money talks in politics and Cerberus has lots of it.

SNOPES TEST: FALSE

We looked into the report above and found out the following: The Freedom Group does own several arms companies. And the Freedom Group is owned by Cerberus, that’s true. Soros does not own Cerberus, that’s false. Cerberus is owned by Stephen Feinberg.

Biker’s Code~I ride purely, and only, because it is fun. I ride because I enjoy the freedom I feel from being exposed to the elements, and the vulnerability to the danger that is intrinsic to riding. I do not ride because it is fashionable to do so. I ride my machine, not wear it. My machine is not a symbol of status. It exists simply for me, and me alone.

My machine is not a toy. It is an extension of my being, and I will treat it accordingly, with the same respect as I have for myself. I strive to understand the inner-workings of my machine, from the most basic to the most complex. I will learn everything I can about my machine, so that I am reliant upon no one but myself for its health and well-being.

I strive to constantly better my skill of control over my machine. I will learn its limits, and use my skill to become one with my machine so that we may keep each other alive. I am the master, it is the servant. Working together in harmony, we will become an invincible team. I do not fear death. I will, however, do all possible to avoid death prematurely.

Fear is the enemy, not death. Fear on the highway leads to death, therefore I will not let fear be my master. I will master it. My machines will outlive me. Therefore, they are my legacy. I will care for them for future bikers to cherish as I have cherished them, whoever they may be.

I do not ride to gain attention, respect, or fear from those who do NOT ride, nor do I wish to intimidate or annoy them. For those that do not know me, all I wish from them is to ignore me. For those that desire to know me, I will share with them the truth of myself, so that they might understand me and not fear others like me.

I will never be the aggressor on the highway. However, should others mess with me, their aggression will be dealt with in as severe a manner as I can cast upon them. I will show respect to other bikers more experienced or knowledgeable than I am. I will learn from them all I can. I will not show disrespect to other bikers less experienced or knowledgeable than I am. I will teach them what I can. It will be my task to mentor new riders, that so desire, into the lifestyle of the biker, so that the breed shall continue. I shall instruct them, as I have been instructed by those before me. I shall preserve and honor traditions of bikers before me, and I will pass them on unaltered.

I will not judge other bikers on their choice of machine, their appearance, or their profession. I will judge them only on their conduct as bikers. I am proud of my accomplishments as a biker, though I will not flaunt them to others. If they ask, I will share with them. I will stand ready to help any other biker who truly needs my help. I will never ask another biker to do for me what I can do for myself. I am not a part-time biker. I am a biker when, and wherever I go.

I am proud to be a biker, and I hide my chosen lifestyle from no one. I ride because I love freedom, independence, and the movement of the ground beneath me. But most of all, I ride to better understand myself, my machine, the lands in which I ride, and to seek out and know other bikers like myself.

BEST T-SHIRT OF THE WEEK–

ILLINOIS SENATE STEPS UP–Today the Illinois Senate voted on the Override of the Veto of HB2860.
Congratulations people you have just won your 4th Veto Override!!!
The vote on October 25 will give you the Roll Call vote for the House and the Senate Roll Call vote today, Nov. 10th which was 45 Yeas, 6 Nays, 8 Not Voting.
Some legislators were off the floor (Senator Althoff had a death in her family) when the vote was taken.
We had another five votes if all would have been there. This was a major victory for you. We Flexed our Muscles.

This privilege will not start until Jan.1, 2012.

SB2528 is a Trailer Bill filled on this bill for a 120 second wait for when the traffic light doesn’t sense you.

I highly suggest that when Jan 1, 2012 arrives that everyone do the 120sec wait on those Traffic Lights that don’t work so as to get in the habit.

I also Highly Recommend that we don’t abuse and take advantage of this privilege. Use it only when it is legal to do so. Please tell all your friends and all other bikers to respect what we have been given.

This privilege can be taken away even quicker than getting it.

We must not have a spike in accidents, injuries and fatalities so that the Nay Sayers like the Governor, IDOT, and the ISP don’t say “I Told You So” to the General Assembly

I am sure there will some tickets issued till all law inforcement offices have the correct info but they will be thrown out.

If you use this law and proceed in a reckless manner you are subject to a reckless driving ticket so use it wisely.

Thank You to all that helped to make this change in our laws and also to Todd Vandermyde and his magic mind.

I think it would be a good thing for ALL the chapters to send their Senators and Representatives in their area that voted with us a card of Thanks for supporting us. We had legislators in both chambers vote with us that in the past wouldn’t give us the time of day in the past and that is called progress.

All chapters should send a card of Thanks to Senator Gary Forby and Representative Dan Beiser for being Chief Sponsors on this bill.

Again pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.

LET’S SEE–What’s on the plate for this week. We are helping Toph, the Editor in Chief, of Hot Bike Baggers, their hottest mag right now, with some deadline tech tips. I may bring you the next Mudflap Girl Wire Plus, wiring report, then work on Tom Foster’s bike feature.

We have performance upgrade techs flying at us. This is the time to get the work done, while shops are slow, and before riding season. I need to complete the tech on the Mr. Lucky’s weld-on kickstand, on my son’s Mudflap Girl FXR. I have a tech from Bruce, our copy editor, on a Kendon Trailer upgrade, and Sin Wu is working on Paul Garson’s motorcycle history piece (actually it’s up on the home page), and I have another antique feature from Paul, an amazing bike.

You name it, it’s coming to Bikernet. We also have a tech coming from Tim on his ACE grips.

Hang on for next week. You never know…

Ride Forever,
